Sinds 2009 fotografeert Patricia de Ruijter intensief in haar eigen habitat, ‘De Oeverlanden’ in Amsterdam. ‘De Oeverlanden’ is een groene strook aan het Nieuwe Meer, ingeklemd tussen snelweg en Schiphol. Hier zoomt ze in op de natuur. Ze bestudeert en fotografeert op poëtische wijze, en gaat door waar taal tekort schiet. Wie het ziet verstaat het: wilde en eetbare planten in cohabitatie met verlaten plastic verpakkingen, autolicht en ondefinieerbaar vuil. Van veraf niet meer dan vlekken op een weg, van dichtbij de wilde verschijnselen van het nu. Wind, water, zuurstof, alles ontfermt zich over het nutteloze restmateriaal, maakt het met kracht weer levend en draagt het een poosje met zich mee. Deze halfwezens of verschijnselen voelen vaak levensecht, soms afstotelijk, soms aandoenlijk. Soms is het onderscheid met levende wezens nauwelijks zichtbaar: troep of leven, materie of energie.
Since 2009 Patricia de Ruijter has been intensively photographing her own habitat, ‘De Oeverlanden’ in Amsterdam. ‘De Oeverlanden’ is a green strip alongside a lake, the Nieuwe Meer, trapped between the highway and Schiphol airport. She focusses on the nature. She studies and photographs in a poetic way and continues on beyond where the written word falters. Those who have seen it understand: wild and edible plants cohabiting with discarded plastic packaging, headlights and unrecognisable garbage. From a distance nothing more than lumps on the path, close up, the wild phenomena of now. Wind, water, oxygen, everything takes pity on the useless left-over material, exerts force to bring it back to life and carries it along for a while. These half-creatures or phenomena often seem lifelike – if you look closely – sometimes repulsive, sometimes endearing. Sometimes there is hardly any difference compared to living creatures: litter or life, matter or energy.

Patricia de Ruijter onderzoekt sinds 1998 vanuit verschillende uitgangspunten hoe natuur en cultuur in elkaar overgaan. Het begon met NewLand waarvoor zij naar IJsland en New York afreisde. Patricia wilde vormgeven aan haar verlangen om deze ultieme plekken te versmelten tot een nieuwe, verenigde vorm van bestaan. Daarna werd het No-land, een plek waar alles steeds weer opnieuw begint, waar nog niet zoveel bepaald is. Een stadsplek die leeg heeft gestaan vermengd met een oerlandschap. Een abstracte vorm gefotografeerd door de beweging van licht.
beings is gebouwd op de humus van deze eerdere projecten. Opnieuw gaat het om ruimte en grenzen, maar dit keer begon Patricia niet bij een verlangen naar ruimte, maar bij de ruimte zelf: haar directe, fysieke omgeving. Zeer geconcentreerd, haast meditatief, keek ze door haar camera naar de Oeverlanden. Ze vond beings.

Since 1998 Patricia de Ruijter has been exploring the transitions between nature and culture from different starting points. It started with NewLand, which involved her travelling to Iceland and New York. Patricia wanted to give shape to her desire to fuse these extremes into a new, combined form of existence. Next, there was No-land, a place where everything is constantly starting from the scratch, where not much is determined. An abandoned urban area that has been mixed with a primitive landscape. An abstract form photographed through the motion of light.
beings is built on the compost of these earlier projects. It is also concerned with space and borders, but this time Patricia did not begin with a desire for space, but with the space itself: her immediate, physical surroundings. Highly focussed, almost meditative, she looked through her camera at the Oeverlanden. She found beings.
