It’s Figaro’s wedding day, and, to add to the usual worries, Figaro learns that his master, the Count, is out to bed his bride-to-be Susanna. The Countess is heartbroken by her husband’s faithlessness, but finds herself the object of the adolescent desires of the page. And Figaro is in trouble with the housekeeper who has lent him money on the promise that, if he can’t repay her, he’ll have to marry her... The Marriage of Figaro is one of opera’s most tender, comic and heart-warming works. Mozart’s music – popularised beyond the confines of opera through use in films like The Shawshank Redemption – expresses all the joy and pain of love and the agony and ecstasy of desire. Sung in English.

La vida breve / Gianni Schicchi Wed 18, Fri 20, Wed 25 & Sat 28 February 2015
Violetta is a courtesan to the rich, but her superficial world of abandon is turned upside down when she falls for the young nobleman Alfredo. Yet when her past catches up with her, she is soon forced to sacrifice what may be her only chance of real love.
Two outstanding operas; one extraordinary evening.
Set in Belle Époque Paris this lavish production of Verdi’s most moving love story has been an instant hit with audiences. This is your last chance to see it this year in Leeds. Sung in Italian with English titles.

Prepare for an intense experience in Christopher Alden’s highly praised take on de Falla’s short exuberant opera La vida breve. Starring Anne-Sophie Duprels, this all or nothing tragedy tells the deeply moving story of a woman in love with the wrong man. Sung in Spanish with English titles.
Light-hearted Gianni Schicchi is a satyr play set around the death-bed of a rich man. Puccini’s music illustrates the absurdity of the greed and avarice driving the scheming relatives’ actions. Christopher Purves, ‘one of the great operatic artists of the present’ (THE SPECTATOR), stars in this comic masterpiece. Sung in Italian with English titles.

A prestigious co-production between Chichester Festival Theatre and Birmingham Repertory Theatre, starring Jason Donovan (Festen, Sweeney Todd) as Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue and Raymond Coulthard (Mr Selfridge, Hotel Babylon) as King George VI. As the world stands on the brink of war, Edward VIII sparks controversy with his love for married socialite, Wallis Simpson. As Edward’s position becomes increasingly untenable, his brother Bertie, who has previously shied away from the public eye because of a terrible stammer, is thrust in to the spotlight as his likely successor. With the support of his wife Elizabeth (the much-loved future Queen Mother), Bertie meets maverick speech therapist and failed actor, Lionel Logue, at an office in Harley Street. Together they embark on an unlikely journey to prepare Bertie to lead his country as King George VI. The King’s Speech is the true and heart-warming story of one man’s struggle to overcome his personal affliction and, in his country’s darkest hour, deliver the now iconic speech broadcast across the globe to inspire his people.

Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971 – stunning audiences and changing the face of musical theatre forever. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera tells the a story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through an extraordinary, groundbreaking score. As compelling today as it was at its inception over forty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs from I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Everything’s Alright and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar.
The sequel to Dreamboats and Petticoats – whatever happened to Bobby & Laura and Norman & Sue? Their story continues…
Produced by Bill Kenwright and the creative team behind numerous blockbuster musicals, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the world’s oldest story with the superb theatricality they have brought to Evita, Joseph, Blood Brothers and Scrooge to mention only a few.

It’s 1963 and the world is changing. Bobby and Laura’s single Dreamboats and Petticoats has not taken off. Norman and Sue have settled down to non-marital bliss – and a baby! But Ray and Donna seem blissfully happy… The advent of The Beatles and the Merseyside sound is inspirational. But will it inspire Bobby and Laura to have one more shot at stardom, Norman to “get off the drains” and find that singing voice he has longed for, and Ray to realise his ambition and manage a really top pop act? All will be revealed in a follow up with the same wit, charm and great songs as Dreamboats and Petticoats featuring all your favourite 60s rock ‘n’ roll hits.

Despite protests of innocence Andy Dufresne is handed a double life sentence for the brutal murder of his wife and her lover. Incarcerated at the notorious Shawshank facility he quickly learns that no one can survive alone. Andy strikes up an unlikely friendship with the prison fixer, Red, and things take a slight turn for the better. However, when Warden Stammas decides to bully Andy into subservience and exploit his talents for accountancy a desperate plan is quietly hatched. Widely considered the number one all-time movie, Stephen King’s classic story takes to the stage in a new production which examines desperation, injustice, friendship and hope behind the claustrophobic bars of a maximum security penitentiary.
