The Coronation of Poppea Sat 4, Sat 11, Fri 24 & Thu 30 October 2014

The Bartered Bride Sat 18, Sat 25, Wed 29 & Fri 31 October 2014

The moral ambivalence of one of the artform’s earliest masterpieces, delivered through some of the most sensuous music ever written, ensures that The Coronation of Poppea remains to this day one of the most shocking and compelling operas of all time.

Featuring an unforgettable circus interlude and enthusiastically received by critics and audiences, this ‘groundbreaking’ (THE GUARDIAN ) production of Smetana’s irresistibly charming village comedy makes a long-awaited return to Leeds Grand Theatre. Vibrant, colourful music full of enchanting, uplifting folk melodies and exuberant rhythms brings alive a simple tale of true love and trickery with youth, ardour and cunning triumphing over cynical calculation.

Music of almost unparalleled beauty tells the story of the Emperor Nero’s intrigues and the rise of his mistress Poppea – crowned by one of the most exquisite love duets ever written. The National Theatre’s award-winning comedy One Man, Two Guvnors embarks on its biggest ever tour of the UK and Ireland. With a cast including Gavin Spokes (One Man, Two Guvnors, London) in the lead role as Francis, Norman Pace (Hale and Pace) and Emma Barton (EastEnders), this acclaimed smash hit is a glorious celebration of British comedy – a unique, laugh-out-loud mix of satire, songs, slapstick and glittering one-liners. Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe. But Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother – who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers – but to prevent discovery, he must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple.

Wed 4 – Thu 12 March 2015 Northern Ballet brings Jean-Christophe Maillot’s, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo production of Romeo and Juliet to Leeds Grand Theatre in 2015. Set to Prokofiev’s unforgettable score, played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia, Romeo and Juliet is choreographed by acclaimed dance-maker Jean-Christophe Maillot, whose new version of The Taming of the Shrew for the Bolshoi Ballet premiered this July. His beautiful interpretation captures the essence of what it means to be young and in love, and tells of the devastating tragedy that unfolds when tenderness and naivety are met with violence and pride. Northern Ballet ‘boasts the best dance-actors in the World’ (DANCE EUROPE) and is the perfect Company to bring a new passion to this famous story. REGINALD ROSE

Tue 7 – Sat 11 April 2015 Following its record-breaking West End run this new production of Twelve Angry Men brings to the stage the taut brilliance of the 1957 three-time Academy Award-nominated film which was produced by, and starred, Henry Fonda, and is considered to be one of the great ‘must-see’ movies of all time. A jury has murder on their minds and a life in their hands as they decide the fate of a young delinquent accused of killing his father. But what appears to be an open and shut case soon becomes a huge dilemma as prejudices and preconceived ideas about the accused, the trial and each other turn the tables every which way, until the nail-biting climax...

Dazzling lights, swinging songs and a bad boy to melt your heart – don’t miss this fabulous production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. Opposites attract when Julie Jordan falls in love with the rebellious carnival barker Billy Bigelow. Billy is given a chance to make good, but is it too little too late, or will a lucky star save him and those he loves? Voted best musical of the 20th century by Time Magazine, Carousel features hit songs including You’ll Never Walk Alone and If I Loved You. Jo Davies’s vibrant production is filled with magical moments, stunning choreography and breathtaking music. Moving and uplifting in equal measure, this 5 star production was an instant hit with critics and audiences when first seen in 2012.

Tue 26 – Sat 30 May 2015 1936: King Edward VIII has abdicated for the love of Wallis Simpson. Bertie, his brother, is crowned King George VI of England. At an office in Harley Street, London, Bertie and his wife Elizabeth (the future much-loved Queen Mother) are meeting maverick Australian speech therapist and failed actor, Lionel Logue. With the support of his wife, Bertie and Logue embark on an extraordinary journey to overcome his stammer and deliver the now iconic speech broadcast across the globe to inspire his people. As the world stood against the Nazi threat The King’s Speech is the true and heart-warming story. They were a greatly loved Royal Family who took this nation through its darkest hour. Starring Jason Donovan as Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue in a powerful dramatic role he was passionate to embrace, and supported by a fine acting company under the direction of former Royal Shakespeare Company Associate Roxana Silbert. This is a prestigious co-production between Chichester Festival Theatre and Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

This hilarious Winner of the 2014 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy layers joy on joy, joke on joke, in a delightful evening of theatrical absurdity featuring P.G Wodehouse’s iconic double act. When a country house weekend takes a turn for the worse Bertie Wooster is unwittingly called on to play matchmaker, but also to steal a silver cow creamer from Totleigh Towers. Naturally, the ever dependable Jeeves is there to prevent Bertie from making a fool of himself in front of a cast of Wodehouse’s finest characters.

Based on Mel Brooks’ much loved Academy Award-winning movie, and from the producers of Midnight Tango and Dance ’Til Dawn, this hilarious musical comedy has taken Broadway and the West End by storm, winning a recordbreaking 12 Tony Awards and 3 Olivier Awards. Featuring a riotous mix of eccentric characters and show stopping songs, including Springtime For Hitler, this brand new production is destined to delight British audiences.
