Albert Herring Britten
Joshua Handel This fully staged new production brings to life one of Handel’s most magnificent and successful music dramas. Beautiful, stirring and blazingly colourful music tells the gripping story of the conquest of Canaan by the wandering Israelites under their leader, Joshua. Dramatising the fall of Jericho and the plight and joy of the Hebrew people, Joshua contains some of Handel’s most brilliant choral music including the famous chorus See, the conqu’ring hero comes!

May Day is looming, and the small town of Loxford is in turmoil. All the potential May Queens are judged to be morally unsuitable. Desperate, the locals decide on a May King instead, and choose the blameless Albert Herring. But after one rum-laced lemonade at the May Day ceremony, Albert decides to taste adventure and chaos ensues. Starring Dame Josephine Barstow as the formidable Lady Billows, this wonderfully charming and light hearted comedy about small town life is the perfect treat to celebrate the arrival of May. This site specific production is performed in the Howard Assembly Room, Opera North’s beautiful venue for chamber-scale work within Leeds Grand Theatre.

‘exhilarating...one of the best musicals ever written’ SUNDAY TIMES
BILL KENWRIGHT PRESENTS
‘a triumphant evening ... unmissable and unbeatable’
‘gritty, gripping, superb... it’s a must!’
THE SPECTATOR
MAIL ON SUNDAY
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production recently surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as, inevitably, it ‘brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval’ (Jack Tinker, Daily Mail).

The Old Vic and West-End smash hit Noises Off comes to Leeds Grand Theatre following its triumphant and critically acclaimed sell out run in London. Hailed as one of the greatest British comedies ever written, Michael Frayn’s multi-award-winning backstage farce serves up a riotous double bill – a play within a play. If you enjoyed our magical festive productions in the past...
...you won’t want to miss our new ballet for Christmas 2013 Northern Ballet brings the ultimate rags-to-riches fairytale to life this Christmas with the World Première of Cinderella. One of the most beloved fairytales of all time, Cinderella tells the story of a young woman whose life is made miserable by her horrid stepmother and two bullying stepsisters. Granted a wish by her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella’s world of drudgery is left behind on one memorable night as she is swept off her feet, and out of her glass slippers, by a handsome Prince. After the phenomenal success of Beauty & the Beast and The Nutcracker, Northern Ballet return with what promises to be another spectacular festive production. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without Northern Ballet – book now to be the first to see this magical new production.
