Set during the Californian Gold Rush in a world of gun fights, lynching and poker games, Puccini’s La fanciulla del West combines the suspense and action of a great Western with the emotional punch of Italian opera. Starring ‘glorious’ (THE GUARDIAN) soprano Alwyn Mellor in the title role and boasting some of Puccini’s most adventurous and dramatic music, this blazing new production is guaranteed to strike gold.
On return from battle, King Duncan’s generals, Macbeth and Banquo, encounter three unnatural women who deliver a strange prophecy. When Macbeth tells his wife of their prediction – that he will become King of Scotland – it leads to a chain of bloody, unstoppable events…. Shakespeare’s great masterpiece inspired Verdi to create music of unparalleled power that adds even greater emotional depth to the original.
The perfect Valentine’s treat, this seductive homage to Paris perfectly captures the city’s unique aura as the capital of love and romance through music and imagery. Acclaimed soloists will take the audience on a musical journey through some of the great operatic repertoire (including pieces by Puccini, Massenet and Offenbach) as well as the intimate bars and cabarets of Monmartre infused with the music of Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel.

Thu 6 – Sat 15 March 2014 An enduring icon of the ancient world. The ultimate modern woman. Beautiful, sensual and determined; mother, lover and queen. In a world ruled by men, this courageous and compulsive woman overturned convention and changed the course of history. Now she’s back for a limited time only this Spring. Northern Ballet’s Cleopatra has thrilled audiences and critics, and gained celebrity fans, since its world première in 2011. This stunning ballet charts Cleopatra’s sensational rise to power, her scandalous romances with the most powerful men in history, and her eventual downfall. With music composed by Golden Globe and Academy Award-nominated Claude-Michel Schönberg (famed for Les Misérables and Miss Saigon), played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia, and choreography from Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director David Nixon OBE, Cleopatra is an unmissable retelling of a remarkable woman’s story.

Mon 24 – Sat 29 March 2014 Direct from the West End, the acknowledged master of psychological illusion returns to the stage with his latest show, Derren Brown: Infamous, demonstrating once again why Derren is one of the world’s most renowned live performers; a dark manipulator of magic and mind control. For Infamous, a more ‘personal’ show, Derren is re-united with his close collaborator and friend, actor/writer Andy Nyman. Derren says ‘Now we’ve joined forces again, we’re very eager to make this show feel different. There was something of a template we followed with all the shows, which worked very well. It’s rather exciting and scary leaving that behind. This one should certainly have a different tone, and will mix things up a bit for those who have seen the others on TV or live’. Infamous is Derren’s sixth show since 2003. Watched by an estimated audience of over 2 million people, he has won two prestigious Olivier Awards, for Something Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali (2012) and confesses that touring is still his favourite thing to do.

Tue 1 – Sat 5 April 2014 Pygmalion is one of theatre’s most entertaining and beguiling explorations of gender and class and is perhaps best known as the inspiration for the musical My Fair Lady. The aristocratic and pompous Professor Henry Higgins (made famous by Rex Harrison) makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can transform the manners and speech of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle and pass her off as a society lady. Packed with a host of larger than life characters Pygmalion remains one of Bernard Shaw’s most popular plays and a classic British drama; full of his trademark wit, style and humour. BAFTA Award-winning Alistair McGowan stars as Professor Higgins in this centenary year production of Bernard Shaw’s enduring masterpiece directed by Tony award-winning David Grindley. He is regarded as one of the most talented people working in entertainment today; an impressionist, comic and writer he has established himself as a formidable actor in recent years receiving critical acclaim for several West End appearances including Little Shop of Horrors, for which he received an Olivier Award nomination. Also starring Rula Lenska (Coronation Street) as Mrs Higgins and Jamie Foreman (Eastenders) as Alfred Doolittle.

The Mousetrap is celebrating the 62nd year of a record breaking run during which over 25,000 performances have been given, including a sell-out run at Leeds Grand Theatre last year. An iconic piece of theatrical history, this is a classic whodunit written by the greatest crime writer of all time. The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.
