Postage charge £1 where applicable. Andrea Chénier is supported by a generous gift from Terry and Liz Bramall. Così fan tutte is supported by the Friends of Opera North.

The dramatic plot of Andrea Chénier is inspired by the tragic story of the Romantic poet guillotined during the French Revolution. Giordano was a contemporary of Puccini and his most popular opera is a tragic and thrilling historical drama charting the love rivalry between the poet Chénier and the servant Gérard for the young aristocrat Maddalena. When Maddalena loses everything in the Revolution, Chénier offers her protection and provokes the revenge of the now-powerful Gérard. Annabel Arden’s new production explores the chaos of revolution and examines the role of the artist in a time of social and political turmoil. Giordano’s stirring opera offers the tenor a leading and impressive role and is coloured with tunes associated with the French Revolution. This opera has always been warmly embraced by audiences for its openhearted emotionalism and ardent dramatic lyricism. It is a truly passionate opera that is not to be missed!

Così fan tutte

L’elisir d’amore

or, The School for Lovers

The Elixir of Love

Wed 3, Wed 10, Sat 13, Thu 18 & Fri 26 February 2016

Wed 17, Fri 19, Thu 25 & Sat 27 February 2016

It starts with a casual bet. The wily old cynic Don Alfonso wagers that the fiancées of two young men, complacent in their romantic notions of love, won’t stay faithful for a minute if put to the test. It sounds harmless enough and, anyway, the lovers are entirely sure of themselves. But cruelty is inherent in this game of love and chance. Mozart created some of his most dazzlingly beautiful music for Così fan tutte and with unsparing accuracy, truthfulness and sparkling humour he explores the themes of trust and deception, and loyalty and desire in romantic relationships.

Enjoy this sunny 1950s-style production of Donizetti’s light-hearted comedy about the naive Nemorino besotted with the beautiful bar owner Adina. She torments him with her indifference and attaches herself to the experienced charmer Belcore. In desperation, Nemorino seeks the help of Dr. Dulcamara’s miraculous ‘love potion’. Will he gain Adina’s love before it’s too late? Fresh and funny, the opera includes one of the best-loved of tenor arias, Una furtiva lagrima. Complete with a hot-air balloon and Vespas, this uplifting production will definitely leave you wanting more.

Sung in English

Mon 28 March – Sat 2 April 2016 Book for Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers Blood Brothers tells the captivating and & Joseph and save £10* moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it ‘brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval’ (DAILY MAIL). Lyn Paul returns to the iconic role she has played many times in the West End, in fact she was the show’s final Mrs Johnstone when it closed at the Phoenix Multibuy Offer Theatre in 2012.

Adapted by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony and Olivier Awardwinning playwright Richard Greenberg and directed by Nikolai Foster. This tale of vivacious, goodtime girl Holly Golightly and her fantastical existence in 1940’s New York City, is told through the eyes of a young writer, completely fascinated by this exquisite extrovert who every woman wants to be, and every man wants to be with. With memorable songs from the era, this stylish production is set to capture the hearts of audiences and sparkle like a diamond in a Tiffany’s window.

Mon 4 – Sat 9 July 2016 Following the phenomenal decade-long success of The Agatha Christie Theatre Company, which sold over two million tickets and continually played to packed houses around the UK, Bill Kenwright presents a new production from the pen of the legendary award-winning writing team Levinson and Link, whose work includes the mystery series Murder, She Wrote and Columbo. Playwright Alex Dennison is left heartbroken when his fiancée and leading lady Monica Welles is found dead from an apparent suicide. On the anniversary of that ill-fated night, Alex assembles the same cast and crew in the same theatre, for a reading of his new play. But as the reading begins, it becomes clear that Alex believes that Monica was murdered and he intends to uncover her killer... Star casting to be announced.

Alexandra Burke* (The X Factor, The Bodyguard). Directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, Sister Act is the feel-amazing musical comedy based on the smash hit movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith. Featuring original music by Tony and 8-time Oscar-winner Alan Menken (Disney’s Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Enchanted), dazzling dance routines and songs inspired by Motown, soul and disco, Sister Act is the funniest and funkiest musical around. Sister Act tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder. Under protective custody she is hidden in the one place she won’t be found – a Convent! Disguised as a nun and under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, sisterhood and music. *Alexandra Burke is not scheduled to perform at matinees

Tue 30 August – Sat 3 September 2016 Greg only met Ginny a month ago but has already made up his mind that she’s the girl for him. When she tells him that she’s going to visit her parents, he decides this is the moment to ask her father for his daughter’s hand. Discovering a scribbled address, he follows her to Buckinghamshire where he finds Philip and Sheila enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning breakfast in the garden, but the only thing is – they’re not Ginny’s parents! Beautifully crafted, wonderfully funny and charmingly English, Relatively Speaking was Alan Ayckbourn’s first great West End success and turned him into a household name. When the show opened at the Duke of York’s Theatre in 1967, the critics hailed the arrival of a great new comic talent. Starring Robert Powell (BAFTA-nominated for Jesus of Nazareth) and Liza Goddard (Doctor Who, Bergerac).
