A sumptuous staging of Strauss’s great human comedy. The Marschallin, a 30-something aristocrat, is having an affair with the much younger Count Octavian. Although fearful he will leave her for a younger woman, she engineers the first meeting between her lover and the beautiful young Sophie, who is being forced into marriage with the unloveable Baron Ochs – with inevitable consequences. Der Rosenkavalier is supported by a generous gift from Dr Keith Howard OBE and the Howard Family.

‘This is a Rosenkavalier to delight the seasoned Straussian, to convince the sceptical, and to beguile the uninitiated’ DAILY TELEGRAPH

Sat 1, Sat 8, Fri 14, Thu 20 & Wed 26 October 2016

Tue 18, Fri 21, Thu 27 & Sat 29 October 2016

The first of Puccini’s Il trittico (trio of one-act operas), Il tabarro, is a noir thriller set in working class Paris. A love triangle is at the heart of this very human drama and, at its climax, a cloak reveals a dark and bloody secret. Suor Angelica focuses on one of the most heart-rending human experiences. Sister Angelica has been confined to a convent following the scandal of an illegitimate son. After years of missing her child every day she discovers that he died a long time ago. Angelica is plunged into suicidal despair yet the end of the opera holds out the promise of redemption. Il tabarro / Suor Angelica is supported by the Friends of Opera North.

A gripping psychological drama set aboard a warship adrift on the high seas. Discover the dramatic tale of Billy Budd, a young sailor who radiates beauty and goodness and the failure of Captain Vere to save him from the destructive forces of envy. Embark on a powerful psychological journey of one man’s inner turmoil as the past comes back to haunt him. With its evocative music, stellar cast and stunning set, Opera North’s new production of one of Britten’s greatest operas promises an unforgettable experience. A co-production with Nederlandse Reisopera.

Mon 3 – Sat 8 April 2017 ‘Why do we get all these feelings and dreams and hopes if we don’t ever use them? … Why do we get all this life if we don’t ever use it.’ Shirley is a Liverpool housewife. Her kids have left home and she makes chips and egg for her husband while talking to the wall. Where has her life disappeared to? Out of the blue, her best friend offers her a trip to Greece for two weeks and she secretly packs her bags. She heads for the sun and starts to see the world and herself very differently. ‘I used to be The Mother, I used to be The Wife. Now I’m Shirley the Brave, Shirley the Magnificent’. Willy Russell’s heart-warming comedy premiered in 1986, took the world by storm and was adapted into an Oscar-nominated film. Now, on its 30th anniversary, Jodie Prenger (Calamity Jane; One Man, Two Guvnors) stars in the first major revival of this national treasure.

Mon 17 – Sat 22 April 2017 Broadway’s smash hit musical comedy comes to the UK starring Strictly Come Dancing’s Joanne Clifton! The winner of 6 Tony awards including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie is based on the 1967 Academy award-winning film, taking you back to the height of the Jazz Age in New York City, when ‘moderns’ including a flapper named Millie Dillmount were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce and rewriting the rules of love. From explosive tap numbers to a ‘Fred and Ginger’ dance routine on a window ledge, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a brilliantly funny and entertaining show for all the family.

Mon 24 – Sat 29 April 2017 Eunice struggles to fit in. When she joins a wealthy family as their housekeeper, her awkwardness leads inexorably to a terrible tale of murder in cold blood – on Valentine’s Day. Ruth Rendell’s brilliant plot unravels a lifetime of deceit, despair and cover-ups which, when revealed, brings a shocking revelation almost as grizzly as murder itself. Building on the phenomenal decade long success of The Agatha Christie Theatre Company, which sold over two million tickets around the UK, Bill Kenwright presents a new production adapted from one of the most celebrated works of the writer often hailed as the successor to Agatha Christie. Credited with revitalising the mystery genre, Ruth Rendell was first published in 1964 and was awarded a CBE in 1996. Her prolific output included film and TV as well as 80 novels and one of the genre’s most famous characters Chief Inspector Wexford. Widely considered to be one of Rendell’s greatest works, A Judgement in Stone is loved for its brilliant rendering of character, plot and motive, and is undoubtedly the Queen of Psychological Crime at her thrilling best.
