Set both on and off-stage during the production of a musical version of Shakespeare’s theatrical farce The Taming of the Shrew, Cole Porter’s multi-award winning Broadway classic revolves around the tempestuous love lives of actor-producer Fred Graham and his leading lady turned ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi. Studded with some of the greatest classics in American musical theatre including So in Love, Always True To You In My Fashion and Too Darn Hot, Kiss Me, Kate is simultaneously a charming homage to the sparkling wit of Shakespeare and an irresistible celebration of the joy and madness of working in theatre.

The Barber of Seville Wed 7, Sat 17, Fri 23, Tue 27 & Thu 29 October 2015

Jenůfa Thu 22, Sat 24, Mon 26 & Wed 28 October 2015

Irresistibly energetic and unashamedly witty, this opulent period production of Rossini’s perfectly crafted masterpiece resonates with seasoned regulars and new audience members alike. Lauded for its highly ornamented musical splendour and sheer comedic genius, it features an endless sequence of beguiling tunes, tender bel canto beauty and some of the most surprising and side-splitting plot twists and turns.

One of the most starkly tragic, intensely moving and harrowing operas to ever appear on stage, Jenůfa is a raw depiction of love, jealousy and sacrifice and has captivated audiences for over 100 years. Jenůfa, a young woman living in a remote rural village, is left by her lover when she becomes pregnant with his child. Worried for the family’s reputation, her severe and unyielding stepmother hides Jenůfa away for the winter to bear her child. But when the ice melts, all the shattered hopes of the previous summer are gruesomely revealed.

Based (very loosely) on the life of the French poet André Chénier and set at the time of the French Revolution, Giordano’s stirring opera has always been warmly embraced by audiences for its open-hearted emotionalism and ardent dramatic lyricism. For many, Andrea Chénier encapsulates the very essence of Italian opera and the title role is one of the most prized in the tenor repertoire. It’s not hard to hear why when you listen to arias such as Un di all’azzuro spazio, Come un bel dì di maggio and the closing duet for Chénier and the opera’s heroine Maddalena, whose love endures even in the face of death. In the best verismo tradition, Giordano also colours his score with tunes associated with the French Revolution, such as Ça ira and the Marseillaise. Lauded director Annabel Arden’s (Théâtre de Complicité) new production for Opera North explores the chaos of revolution and examines the role of the artist in a time of political turmoil. L’elisir d’amore The Elixir of Love Wed 17, Fri 19, Thu 25 & Sat 27 February 2016

It’s difficult to think of an opera that contains more music of sheer beauty than Mozart’s Così fan tutte – or that has a libretto that is more unsettling. It starts with a casual bet. The wily old cynic Don Alfonso wagers that the fiancées of two young men, complacent in their romantic notions of love, won’t stay faithful for a minute if put to the test. It sounds harmless enough and, anyway, the lovers are entirely sure of themselves. But cruelty is inherent in this game of love and chance.

L’elisir d’amore is the ‘male Cinderella’ tale of Nemorino, ineffectual but good-hearted, and his love for the very self-assured Adina, who fancies the experienced charmer Belcore. When the quack Dr. Dulcamara comes to town touting a miraculous ‘love potion’, Nemorino thinks his prayers have been answered. But is it really the potion that makes him suddenly irresistible to all the girls in the village? This sunny 1950s-style production, complete with hot-air balloon and Vespas, is a perfect fit for Donizetti’s funny and moving comedy.

Adapted by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony and Olivier Awardwinning playwright Richard Greenberg and directed by Nikolai Foster. Mon 20 June – Sat 2 July 2016 Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking 2015 Olivier awardnominated musical Cats comes to Leeds direct from its sell-out seasons at the London Palladium, for 2 weeks only. Adapted from TS Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, Cats returned to the West End in December last year, with a sell-out run at the London Palladium, reuniting the original creative team – Director Trevor Nunn, Associate Director and Choreographer Gillian Lynne, Designer John Napier and Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Cats is a wonderful blend of fantasy, drama and romance. On just one special night of the year, all Jellicle cats meet at the Jellicle Ball where Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, makes the Jellicle choice and announces which of them will go up to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. With an amazing musical score that includes the timeless Memory, spectacular set designs, stunning costumes and breathtaking choreography, Cats is a magical musical like no other.
