International Cultural Festival Hosted by:

Leeds University Union.

The International Cultural Festival is an action packed week of activities and events to celebrate and showcase our different cultural groups and to bring together students from home and abroad. From the various films showcasing at the International Film Festival to the Carnival and Bollywood Dance Evening, we’re confident there will be something inside this programme that makes you want to join in. We would also like to say a big thank you to all the students involved in making this happen, especially the Intercultural Ambassadors festival project team. We look forward to seeing you during the week!

All events are based in the Leeds University Union building and are FREE unless otherwise stated. The festival is made up of a mixture of films and events, use the key below to find what interests you or turn to page 10 and 11 for a full overview of this year’s events.

LSR Breakfast Show Hosted by LSR Radio. During the International Cultural Festival join the LSR Breakfast team every weekday. We will be talking about different cultures each day as well as playing some great music, news headlines and lots of fun on www.lsrfm.com Every day, 9.00am to 11.00am.

The History of Henna Exhibition showing the history of henna, the henna plant, a world map of henna (different styles of henna art), the use of henna and black henna. Plus photos of members’ henna. Henna will be available 11.00am-3.00pm. Monday, Thursday & Friday, 10.00am to 4.00pm, Union Foyer.

Cultural showcase: Wedding Extravagansa No matter where in the world you are from, weddings are universal. International Cultural Festival is giving you an opportunity to witness a variety of weddings from all over the world. Monday 6th February Ong-bak: Muay Thai Warrior, Thailand Hosted by the Thai Society. Booting lives in a small and peaceful village. One day a sacred Buddha statuette is stolen from the village by an immoral businessman. Booting must track the thief and reclaim the religious treasure. 12.00pm to 2.00pm, Meeting Room 5.

Folk Tune and Dance Workshop Hosted by the Folk Society Get a taste for our Folk Soc sessions by learning traditional folk tunes and dances from an experienced musician. Suited for beginner/intermediate ability. Later you will have the opportunity to play and share songs in our regular informal session. 5.00pm to 7.00pm, Pack Horse pub, Instruments not provided.

Time for Taiwan Hosted by the Taiwanese Society Get a taste of Taiwanese food, enjoy marvellous Taiwanese culture and have fun with exciting games. We are a very small and exquisite island and this is your chance to know more about where, what, how is Taiwan! Everyone welcome. Don’t forget to try as much bubble tea as you can. 2.00pm to 5.00pm, Riley Smith Hall.

To Be, Palestine Hosted by the Palestine Solidarity Group ‘To Be’ explores the suffering of Palestinians under the Israeli and international siege on Gaza. The film looks at international activist work in Gaza and provides deep testimony to the urgent and overdue need to end an immoral siege on an imprisoned population. 5.30pm to 7.15pm, Meeting Room 5.

Together, Sweden After suffering an abusive husband, Elisabeth takes her two children to a Stockholm commune run by her brother. Life at the commune is crowded, and teaming with sex, drugs and nudity and lots of drama. 5.30pm to 7.30pm, Meeting Room 1.

Bachehay-e Aseman, Iran Hosted by the Iranian Society When Ali loses his sister Zohre’s shoes he is filled with guilt: he knows that his family cannot afford a new pair. He resolves to share his sneakers with her while keeping it a secret from his family and their teachers. A touching comedy that proves loyalty and love cross cultural boundaries. 5.30pm to 7.30pm, Meeting Room 2.

Women Without Men, Iran Hosted by the Feminist Society This exquisitely crafted 1953 Iranian film weaves together the stories of four women after a British and American backed coup removes the democratically elected government. It explores how the women’s experiences are shaped by their faith and the social structures of the day. 7.30pm to 9.15pm, Meeting Room 5.

Debating International Issues Hosted by the United Nations Association Society Come along to a taster session with the United Nations Association. We will introduce you to debating international issues in a UN format. Refreshments at the end. 6.00pm to 7.00pm, Miall Lecture Theatre, Baines Wing, Leeds University.

(L’Auberge Espegnole) Pot Luck, Spain A French student goes on a European exchange programme to improve his Spanish and finds himself living with a strange collective of people from across the world. 7.30pm to 9.30pm, Meeting Room 2. Shooting Dogs, USA This powerful, fact-based film follows a priest and an idealistic teacher as they watch bureaucracy, institutional racism and generations of hatred lead to mass murder in Rwanda. Can a priest and a teacher find sense in the senseless? 7.30pm to 9.30pm, The Common Room.

Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops), Indonesia Hosted by the Indonesian Society This award winning film follows a group of schoolboys and their two inspirational teachers in a farming and tin mining community in Belitung. It explores the boys’ struggles with the poverty that they are enveloped in and looks at their determination to build hope for their futures. 7.30pm to 9.30pm, Meeting Room 4.

Tuesday 7th February Wish You Were Here Welcome to the Intercultural Postcard Factory. Drop in to explore other cultures and your own through designing postcards to be exhibited around university throughout International Cultural Week. Salsa Hosted by SLAPsoc Get a taste of Spanish culture and meet loads of new people in a friendly environment. Middle Eastern Mosaic Hosted by the Islamic Society Join the Islamic Society in a class on how to make traditional plaster mosaic patterns of the Middle East. Wing Chun Kung-Fu Hosted by the Wing Chun Society Come try Wing Chun Kung-Fu, a Chinese martial art perfect for men and women wanting a simple, efficient and practical self -defence system. No experience needed. 5.00pm to 7.00pm, Meeting Room 2.

Garden State, USA This indie classic follows the life of Andrew Largema, who was lead to believe that he caused the accident that paralysed his mother. This late coming of age film takes Andrew on an adventure as his lithium induced

Persepolis, Iran The poignant story of a young girl coming of age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Motorcycle Diaries, Cuba Hosted by the Film Society This film explores the journey of Ernesto Guevara, who would later become known as the revolutionary Che Guevara. The film recounts his expedition across South America with his friend. The Adventists, USA Hosted by the Seventh Day Adventist Society This film shows how the Adventist movement formed and the key characteristics of the faith, including a passion for healthy living. It offers several moving, intimate stories of healing, historical re-enactments showing the church’s beginnings and breathtaking medical techniques that show the way forward for this committed faith community. 7.30pm to 8.30pm, Meeting Room 1.

Politiki Kouzina (A Touch of Spice), Greece Hosted by the Hellenic Society A grandson learns that both food and life require a little salt to give them flavour. Years later that same grandson travels back to reunite with his grandfather and his first love; only to realize that he forgot to put a bit of spice in his own life. 7.30pm to 9.30pm, Meeting Room 5.

The Kite Runner, Afghanistan This is a story of friendship, bertrayal and forgiveness. After spending years in California, Amir returns to his homeland in Afghanistan to help his old friend Hassan, whose son is in trouble. 7.30pm to 9.45pm, Meeting Room 2.

British Day Events Tuesday 7th February, Leeds University Union Grab your friends and join us for a great British day of feasting, drinking and dancing. Not forgetting the traditonal afternoon tea. Ceilidh Hosted by the Folk Society Folk Society invite you to join them for an evening of Traditional Celtic dancing with live music. No experience necessary, come along and have a go at this traditional dance. Copper Dragon Brewery Tour Hosted by the Real Ale Society Ever wondered what sets British Ales apart from other World beers? Find out on our tour of a local real ale brewery, the Copper Dragon in Skipton. The Kingdom of Solomon, Iran Hosted by the Ahlul Bayt Society The film tells the life story of

Prophet Solomon, the King of Israelites. It is mostly based on the Islamic accounts of Solomon’s prophetic life extracted from the Holy Qur’an but it also draws upon parallels found in some Jewish texts. 5.30pm to 7.30pm, Meeting Room 1. Oh My God, USA Hosted by the Unity in Diversity Society Hugh Jackman, Ringo Starr, Seal, and others offer their views on God in this documentary. It features opinions from a variety of religious persuasions. Director Peter Rodger travelled to two dozen countries in his quest to discover what people around the world think about God. 5.30pm to 7.30pm, Meeting Room 5. Black Natural Hair Workshop Hosted by the Seventh-Day Adventist Society Come and join us as we explore the beauty of Black natural hair. Poetry Slam Hosted by Spoken Word Society Artists from Bengali, Sudanese and British backgrounds will represent their culture through a series of short, thoughtprovoking and witty spoken word performances. Come along to find out what it really means to belong to a different culture, by addressing key issues through the power of word. 7.00pm to 8.30pm, Riley Smith Hall, £3.

Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, India Hosted by the Indian Students’ Association. As children Tara and Maya are inseparable. But as adults the fact that one is a princess and the other a servant drives them apart. Maya enacts the ultimate revenge, seducing Tara’s husband on their wedding night and in doing so sparks a power struggle between love and sex. 7.30pm to 10.30pm, Meeting Room 5.

Merong Mahawangsa, Malaysia Hosted by the Malaysian Society This action-packed story tells of a warrior named Merong Mahawangsa who was asked to escort the Prince of Rome to Langkasuka to marry the beautiful Princess of China. They encounter various difficulties as the Princess is kidnapped and Merong is attacked. 7.30pm to 9.30pm, Meeting Room 2.

Okuribito (Departures), Japan Hosted by the Japanese Society Finding himself redundant, Diago answers a mystery job advert and accepts a job as an undertaker preparing bodies for burial and entry into the next life. Follow his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living. 7.30pm to 9.30pm, Meeting Room 1.

History Boys, Britain Hosted by the LGBT Society in partnership with LGBT Month This film follows a group of schoolboys who have hopes of being accepted into Cambridge and Oxford. Come with the boys as they explore Shakespeare, the Kings and victors of ages past, and their own hopes, sexualities and disappointments. 7.30pm to 10.00pm, The Common Room.

Around the World in Henna days Hosted by the Henna Society A session in which we will have different stations where 25 participants can learn the different henna styles and also try them out. Thursday 9th February I-fiesta Hosted by the Vegetarian Food, Food and Mexican Societies. Experience the full flavour of this Global Village. With performances, food and culture from around the world and the chance to win food related prizes. 11.00am to 4.00pm, LUU Foyer. Adowa: The Ghanaian Royal Dance Hosted by the Ghana Society “Adowa” is a traditional dance of the Ashanti in Ghana which mimics the deft movements of the antelope. The dance is an integral part of Ghanaian culture and is performed at different ceremonies. Come and try a few steps and learn about the origin of the dance. Wear flat shoes and comfortable clothing, 2.00pm to 6.00pm, Meeting Room 3. Once Upon a Time Storytelling workshop telling new stories based on our own diverse cultural backgrounds. Multicultural and Multifaith Session Hosted by the Unity in Diversity Society Come along, make friends and learn about different cultures and faith groups. Homerun, Singapore Hosted by the Singaporean Society A remake of the award-winning Iranian film “Children of Heaven”, Homerun is about two poor siblings and their adventures over a lost pair of shoes. 5.30pm to 7.30pm, Meeting Room 5. Death at a Distance of Zero, Palestine Hosted by the Palestine Solidarity Group In a culture of killings, a father of three young children stands in the ruins of his home and tells his tragic story. This film explores some of the real life tragedies experienced by Palestinians today and the message of peace that is finding its way to the World. 5.30pm to 7.30pm, Meeting Room 2.

Seksmisja, Poland Hosted by the Polish Society This highly recommended comedy follows two men who volunteer for a cryogenics experiment expecting to be revived in a couple of years. I Am, USA Hosted by the Unity in Diversity Society This documentary follows Hollywood director Tom Shadyac after a life-threatening head injury as he endeavours to

The Indonesian Society presents the favourite learning activities of Javanese Gamelan, the instrument which came to Leeds four years ago from Java.
