Sharing Your Interests
Creating Memories with Your Kids A friend of mine told me about
Lee Eddins Lee is a father of five and sells construction materials
the memories she had of her father when she was a small girl. “Dad, I want to go fishing with you,” said the little girl. She was seven years old and she wanted to go fishing with her dad so much! The dad’s response to her was always, “You would not enjoy fishing with me. You get dirty, you get wet, and you’ll be bored to death!” When my friend told me this story, she informed me that she always wished her dad would have just taken her. Society says make sure you get plenty of “YOU” time. Don’t let your identity change when you get married! You have to have plenty of “SPACE.”
“
Identity should change when you become a husband and a father. ”
bc 6
Here’s the real deal, from a real dad, one that’s not on the golf course every weekend with his friends or out at the bars a couple of nights a week with the guys in order to maintain identity and have my own space. Identity should change when you become a husband and a father. I mean seriously, if my identity was still a longhaired, earring/nose ring wearing, party animal right now, my life would be totally different! I would be fun to hang out with, and we’d party until we see the lights of the cars going to work on our way home. If you were lucky enough to hang out with this “animal” back in the day and you want to hang again, I am afraid you’ll have to settle for a beer at my house. But you’ll have to bring your own, because I don’t drink. And you will have to listen to stories about my kids and my wife and… I might make you watch a video. My identity has changed, and for the better. I’ve traded a cold beer for a warm bottle, and my pee soaked undies after a long night of partying for a pee soaked diaper. Okay, so that was only one night, from what I can remember. Pee aside; it was a pretty good night. What about your son or your daughter? Are they eager to join you in your workshop, or to go hunting or fishing with you? Do you have a hobby that one of your children has taken an interest in? Could your son or daughter join you on the golf course? Take the time to share time with your kids by doing things you like to do with Available at your local
them. Make them a part of it. You may not catch as many fish, but unless you are literally having to fish to eat that evening, don’t worry about it. I love the song “Just Fishin” by Trace Adkins. What a great way to explain it. The song is about a dad who takes his daughter fishing and explains some of the things he typically does while fishing - like sitting still (which his daughter is not doing), throwing small fish back, and hooking worms. All the normal things about fishing are happening, but to the father it goes way deeper. It is a way to create memories for the little girl and to spend quality time with her that will create lasting memories for both of them. What a great way to create those memories by involving her on a fishing trip! Of course, I am not saying that you can never go fishing by yourself or there is something wrong with hanging with the guys every now and then, but I will say this. I realized early on that I have everything I need right at home; a wife that loves me and kids that adore me. Everything in my life is centered around being the best father I can be to them. That is my identity. So, next time, before you say “no” too quickly, remember the little girl that to this day wished her daddy had said “yes” to her going on the fishing trips as a child. Open your life to your child and see what happens. www.BellCountyFamily.com

The Fence Communication is said to be the root of all relationships. When we open ourselves up to another human being and share the details of our lives, we are binding ourselves to that person with the threads of common experiences and shared intrigues.
Crystal Dyer International Speaker, Author, Entrepreneur, Military Spouse & Veteran, and Mommy of three! Translation: A BUSY MOM! www.crystaldyer.com
Most people understand that building a significant relationship based on trust requires a healthy amount of conversation. What people seem to forget is that while it requires a plethora of positive contact to build a relationship, it often takes only one negative interaction to dissolve it. The following story illustrates why: There was once a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the back fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Then it gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like these. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there. A verbal wound can be as bad as a physical one.”

THE BUSY MOM’S PERSPECTIVE “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that gives grace to those who hear.” -Ephesians 4:29 “Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care, for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or evil.” -Buddha “Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain – and most fools do.” -Dale Carnegie The father in this story clearly understood what many today seem to miss. He understood the power our words have. The opportunities that we have to impact others are too numerous to count. In every functional role of our lives- whether as a parent, spouse, friend, family member, coach, supervisor or subordinate- we are given the chance to impact others with positive, constructive words. I’m not suggesting that developmental dialogue be avoided. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. It’s crucial that we approach it in a timely manner and from a positive perspective. We have to be cognizant to temper the bad with the good. Remember, others only remember us as a summation of our interactions with them directly. You’re either using your words to make a positive impact or you’re using them to destroy the fabric of a healthy, hard-earned relationship. If someone were to pay you 10 cents for every kind word you ever spoke and collect from you 5 cents for every unkind word, would you be rich or poor? Here’s to being rich in all the ways that matter. © Crystal Dyer 2012. All rights reserved.

Setting Yourself Up for Successful Breastfeeding a breastfeeding expert! La Leche League is a non-profit, international network of mothers who give free breastfeeding advice and support. They will gently guide you as you and your baby learn to breastfeed together. They have monthly meetings all over the Central Texas area. Go online to find a meeting near you at www.llli.org. Haven’t had your baby, yet? Not a problem. Le Leche League welcomes pregnant women to come and learn, so they can be that much more prepared when their baby arrives.
Considering
that
breastfeeding is a learned skill, new mothers often need information and support to have a successful breastfeeding experience. Education and encouragement certainly help to smooth over the rough spots in the first few days and weeks. To this end, I thought I would share some resources and best practices that have been helpful to my clients. The first thing a mother who plans to breastfeed should do is read a good breastfeeding book. There are plenty on the bookshelves, but my favorite is The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, which has gone through many editions and is considered a classic. It covers everything from getting started, to problem solving, to how long you can safely store breast milk. Having a book on hand in the middle of a nervous postpartum night is invaluable.
Another good resource is breastfeeding videos. There is nothing like seeing a skill performed. Breastfeeding videos are full of information, computer animations, and demonstrations of breastfeeding basics. You can view some breastfeeding videos online at sites like YouTube.com, or you can find a birth center, WIC office, childbirth educator, or La Leche League group where you can watch or borrow a video. It will be well worth the time you spend.
bc 10
The internet is a vast resource for breastfeeding information. I would advise staying away from forums, where there can be conflicting and confusing information. Instead, go to established websites with a good reputation like www.kellymom.com or www.breastfeeding.com. For breastfeeding support, nothing beats being face to face with Available at your local
Another free resource is Central Texas Birth Circle. This is also a non-profit group of mothers, midwives, childbirth educators, doulas, and other breastfeeding experts. They meet every third Tuesday of the month at 7pm. The meetings are at Avanlee Birth and Maternity Center in Killeen. CTBC has an active and fun Facebook page, just search for “centex birth circle.” Mothers, fathers, and children are welcome, and regardless of the month’s planned topic, there is always time to lend support to a new nursing couple.
Postpartum doulas are often passionate about nurturing the fragile mother/newborn relationship. They can give information and encouragement without “taking over” or being judgmental. Sound good? You can find a postpartum doula by looking on Facebook for “Heart of Texas Doula Collective.” The first six weeks of your baby’s life will be a difficult, wonderful time. If you plan to breastfeed your baby, start seeking resources now to make your “babymoon” the best it can be. Jennifer Bennett is a Licensed Midwife at Avanlee Birth & Maternity Center in Killeen, Texas. She has a very neglected blog at www.avanlee.wordpress.com
The last resource I am going to discuss is doulas. Doulas are professional birth and postpartum support. They often charge for their services. postpartum period, and have training that helps them care for a new mother, teach, and assist with breastfeeding, and give advice on normal newborn care. www.BellCountyFamily.com

Toddler
Toilet Training
6 TIPS FOR LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
SIGNS
to potty train?
A: There is no set stage to begin toilet
training, but most children begin to display signs of readiness around 18 months to 2 years of age. However, toilet training is not something that needs to be rushed or forced; a child must be developmentally ready. Your child may be ready to begin toilet training if he…
As a child grows, you will begin to hear their language expanding. Their ability to name and string words together will advance. Here are some tips to keep in mind as your toddler develops speech. Speak correctly - Don’t use “baby talk.” Your toddler learns to talk by what she hears.
1.
• ...knows he has the urge to go potty. • ...tells you he just went potty in his diaper.
Point and name - When your toddler points at an object as a way of asking for it, name the object and repeat it back to him before you give it to him.
2.
• ...has a desire to wear “big kid” undies. • ...can follow simple instructions. • ...is curious about using the potty chair.
Read stories -As you read, have your toddler point to the various pictures in the story.
3.
Ignore whining - Prompt the toddler by saying, “Use your words.” Don’t hinder learning by rewarding whining.
4.
Avoid comparing - Just as children physically develop at different paces, so does language. If you have concerns, talk with your pediatrician rather than setting unrealistic expectations or parenting out of fear.
5.
Praise them - Every time they use a word correctly, or point to something and identify it, celebrate their growing vocabulary and ability.
6.
NEATNIK SAUCER Eating out at restaurants can be a very messy experience with a toddler. In fact, having been a server before, I know this firsthand. However, the Neatnik Saucer attaches to restaurant style high chairs; the tray overlaps the table and sticks with suction cups. Easy to pack, unpack, and clean up! Visit www.neatniksaucer.com for stores and websites where you can purchase yours. For ages 6 months and up: $32.95.

LOW-FAT Milk for Toddlers
Q: The pediatrician told my

system and brain during the first two years of life. Whole milk also provides enough calories from fat for normal growth. Some pediatricians now allow switching to 1 or 2 percent milk between the ages of 1 and 2 years old, if the child is overweight or if a history of obesity or cardiovascular disease runs in the family.

I passed her the beautiful scissors and asked her to take good care of them because they meant a lot to me. "Are they old?" she asked. Excited that she seemed interested in their history, I explained that they belonged to my mother and my mother's mother. "Well, that explains it," she said. "Explains what?" I asked. What a Dad! I realize there aren’t many families like the one portrayed in the old show Leave it to Beaver. I know I personally do not wear pearls when I vacuum. And I can count on one hand the number of present day television shows that have a mom AND a dad, much less a dad like Ward Cleaver. On a recent rerun, Wally (the teenage son – for those of you who have never seen the show!) goes out on a date to a fine restaurant, only he leaves his wallet at home. Upon discovering the wallet, Ward (the dad) doesn’t want to embarrass his son by showing up at the restaurant and handing him his wallet in front of the girlfriend, so he calls and has the waiter take care of the bill. The waiter says to Wally, “You don’t need to pay until the end of the month.” Ward had made sure that his son was covered. What a dad! I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of hearing about and watching “loser” type dads in movies and on television. There are plenty of awesome dads out there, and here’s my list of what I’ve noticed that makes them so great:

playtime. Pools, parks, camping, free time. That’s summer for the masses, unless you didn’t pass or finish all your school subjects. Then, summer school is in your future. We are going to do a little of all the above. My children are chomping at the bit to swim. I’m ready to run some energy off them at the park. Camping, I’m not sure about. Motel 6 is my idea of roughing it, but I’m always ready for an adventure. So, we might give it a go if the opportunity arises. Sadly, one of mine needs to finish up a few subjects in June. I bet she’ll pick up those feet next year. Like most good things, summer passes before you blink twice, so take time to plan your fun. Grab a calendar and start scheduling play dates with friends at the pools and parks. Pin the spouse down on at least one weekend getaway. The level of comfort is up to you. Schedule in free time, too. Otherwise, you’ll run all over the place and forget to relax. It’s been known to happen to me a time or two. We generally avoid too much organized activity, such as sports, classes, or camps, except with the aforementioned tardy child. Fun time should be about family first, not the next rung on the ladder to college. Plus, my bank

balance appreciates the break from extracurricular activities. Use the extra time during the summer to build family relationships. Start a tradition, such as game night. Set a goal, like hiking all the trails in the local parks. Another summertime opportunity may be to learn something new. My husband and I recently started ballroom dancing lessons. It’s been a long time since we had regular date nights, so a weekly class with other fun adults
While you probably can’t do all those makeover projects that Pinterest makes you think you need, you can pick a few of them and enlist bored children to help. We have a few pieces of furniture that could use a fresh paint job. I haven’t decided if that’s my idea of fun this summer, but I might try my hand at one of the easier pieces and see how it goes. If I can keep the paint on the bookshelf and not the floor and myself, like I usually do, then I might get bold and try the dresser. How hard could it be? Famous last words.
“ Fun time should be
family first, not the next
rung on the ladder to college ” has been a great time for us to be together and NOT talk about the kids. It’s harder than it looks to keep the beat, count the steps, and talk at the same time. We will never be on Dancing with the Stars, but we have a better appreciation for their hard work. I often use summer to take cooking classes with my older children, too. This summer one of my daughters is going to take a bread-baking class, and another one is going to take a class on cooking for dinner parties. I might even do a basics cooking class with my seven-year-old. If she only learns how to boil an egg, that’s still a big deal for a second-grader. Available at your local
Part-time jobs are good for older children. Labor builds character and a bank account. Both will come in handy after high school. Think outside the typical fast food job. Yard duty has low entry and overhead expenses, especially if clients have their own lawn equipment. It’s also flexible. My oldest daughter has volunteered at a daycare for a few hours a week and as a helper in a toddler dance class. That qualifies her to help a busy mom with busier toddlers. Pet owners love a responsible teen to play and care for the furrier members of their family when they are on trips. Beware of pet allergies, though. No one wants to spend their entire summer with puffy eyes. Instead of dreading summer and the inevitable cries of boredom, plan a family friendly time that keeps everyone pleasantly occupied, at least most of the time. Catch up with old friends and make new ones. Make new goals and set aside time for play. Expand your horizons and learn new skills. Knock out a few craft projects. Earn some extra spending money or pad the savings account for college. Most of all, use summer time to dream big and enjoy a little extra freedom from overscheduling.

FITNESS With the summertime upon us, here are some ways to get fit and ready for the beach. It is always a good idea to have a regular cardio program in place for normal routine maintenance. But, with the bathing suits you plan on wearing over the next few months, it may be a good idea to add strength training to your routine. Start by adding free weights or strength training machines to your cardio sessions two to three times a week. This will build muscle mass and those with more muscle mass burn fat and calories more rapidly, according to the Mayo Clinic. Consult with your doctor or nurse practitioner to see exactly what exercises you should add.

Father’s Day Brandy Johnson Photography
by Marcy Lytle
My Three Dads I am not a father.
I’m a mother. So why am I writing a Father’s Day article? I have a father, my husband is a father, and now my son-in-law is a father. Three generations I connect with on a daily basis, and I’m in the middle…relating to all three in so many different ways. My father is 86 years old and going through a seemingly endless schedule of doctor’s appointments, procedures, and surgeries…one after the other. He most recently had a procedure and was told not to lift anything over five pounds, and to “take it easy” for a full week. Three days later, my mom saw him pass by the window, toting a ladder to lean up against the side of the house, so he could climb up and clean the rain gutters. We tell him to slow down, obey doctor’s orders, but he has a mind of his own, an agenda he’s attending to, and things to be done. He still preaches, he still plants and tends a garden, and he apparently still cleans rain gutters. He was my hero when I was little, and I couldn’t wait to ride in the car with him, go fishing “just the two of us,” or even just smell his cologne when he gave me a big hug. I hope I have his stamina, determination, strength, and courage when I’m his age!
in their sporting events, and offer hugs and “I love you” every time they arrived…or left home. Sometimes our family showed up at our neighborhood pool, and I observed kids of all ages as they climbed all over my husband’s shoulders, playing games, jumping off the side of the pool into his arms. Where were their fathers? I don’t think they were at the pool at all. So my husband gladly offered his time to just be there. Present and available for a good time. I know we both made mistakes as parents, but fathering our kids was something he excelled in…and I applaud him for that! My son-in-law is a new father… seven months into parenthood now. From the first day I met him, at 2:00 a.m. in the snow in our front yard (we were up that early building a snowman in case the snow melted before sunrise), I saw something in his eyes that caught me – and I now see it in the eyes of his own son. It was innocence, purity, and a contentment with who he was, and it was beautiful. I watched him take my daughter on their first date, and observed him throughout their courtship open doors for her, show up with soup when she was sick, feed her dog when she didn’t have the time or inclination to, and then be the first one to rise to clean up the kitchen…after a family meal. He was nothing but honoring, loving, and giving. The marks of a true father…in the heart and actions of a young teen. He had to be a keeper! Now I see him look at his son with love that is fierce and strong, yet tender and kind. He truly enjoys every minute of holding Gideon, changing his diaper, feeding him goopy food, and throwing him high into the air to hear him squeal.
bc My husband is father to our two children, both now grown. He and I really hadn’t planned on having children, but when they came – we were blown away with joy. I watched my husband play with our kids when they were little, even though he had a painful, deteriorated hip joint that eventually had to be replaced. He ran, played games, acted silly, and gave every spare moment to help them with projects, coach or assist

Three fathers who aren’t perfect, their names are not in any famous books, and their faces don’t grace the big screen. You wouldn’t know them if you saw them walking down the street, and I haven’t even mentioned their names yet. However, one is known for his grit, stamina, and faithfulness to serve others. Another is known for his playful spirit, his easy going attitude, and his strong faith. And the third is known for being a servant, a leader, and a fun guy. All of these attributes are combined perfection, reasons they are famous in my heart and mind, and their faces are absolutely the most handsome faces on the earth… to me. I know them when I see them, and I know their names. What father do you connect with on a daily basis? He doesn’t have to be a blood relative; he can be the kind old man next door that waves when you get in your car to go to work. He might be the dad on the soccer field who encourages your son when he misses a goal. Or maybe he’s your own father with big, open arms. Whether or not you already have a son-in-law, or a son who will be a father someday…encourage the young men you know.
Love on them and give them hugs, and look into their eyes. Remember the television show My Three Sons? I know. It’s a golden oldie. If I could write the next big family movie and have it hit the theaters, it would definitely be called My Three Dads. www.BellCountyFamily.com

edge and experience of business and financial management with our Habitat. As of March 6, 2012, he has clocked over 1,400 volunteer hours including time serving as the President of the Board of Directors. He has taken on the crucial job of the organization’s accounting and financial reporting. He also stepped up to the arduous responsibility of updating the mortgage servicing, streamlining operations, and serving as a business consultant. He spent considerable time working with other board member volunteers and homeowners to help find solutions to mortgage delinquency. Ken loves challenging situations, where he can learn the system and puzzle out solutions. The Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity was a great fit for his love of finding solutions, resources and his love of helping people. Ken uses his heart for people and his business acumen to improve people’s lives and the affiliate. Ken has been married to Ingrid for over 30 years. They love to cook and try new recipes together. Ingrid happily jumps in to help at events, especially at Habitat home ground-breakings and dedications. They plan to retire in a community where he can enjoy one of his passions – golf. Ken will leave his permanent mark on the Hood Area Habitat for Humanity with all his hard work and accomplishments! He sets a benchmark on the criteria of a volunteer and a friend. The Fort Hood Area of Humanity is appreciative of all his work and dedication he has for our affiliate.

bc Dear Dave,
I want to keep one of our credit cards open and use the bill-pay option for utilities and other monthly bills. I want to do this so we can continue earning rewards points, and the way I look at it, we’d just be re-routing the money and paying it off every month. My husband doesn’t like this idea and thinks we should get rid of them all. Am I just asking for trouble by wanting to keep the rewards card open? - Cheryl

Dear Cheryl, Yes, you are. Life never works out exactly the way you think it will. You can make all the well-reasoned and best-intentioned plans you want, but sooner or later that snake is going to bite you. The only thing I’d consider in a situation like this is a debit card that has a rewards system attached. Lots of debit card programs offer the same kinds of rewards programs offered by credit card companies, with one big exception—you don’t have to go into debt! You need to stop chasing these stupid brownie points, Cheryl. According to Consumer Reports, 78 percent of credit card airline miles are never redeemed. Studies also show that people spend more when usAvailable at your local
