February is such a big month to be such a short month. There is so much to be thankful for when we consider the Civil Rights Movement and how it changed the face of America for the better. BIG MIRACLE EXTRA Since the motion picture Big Miracle is based on a true story, it might be fun for kids to learn more about what had actually happened. Tom Rose did write a book on the real life story in 1989 called Freeing the Whales. The book has been updated and now bears the same title as the movie, but being a descriptive and fact-filled tale, it's not a very kid-friendly read. However, you can read online a 1988 article in the L.A. Times reporting on the effort, which was called Operation Breakthrough. The article describes the rescue and gives a glimpse of that periodin history with references to President Reagan and the Soviets. Related study subjects could be the Reagan presidency and the Cold War.

The Reason for Respect: Today ’s Civil Society This month I want to go away from the usual to write about a very special person and very special message. As we celebrate Black History Month, I think it important to honor a very special lady, Ms. Rosa Parks.

It is 1955, you’re on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama on your way home from work on a cold December afternoon. You are sitting in your seat, minding your own business when the bus driver tells you to get up, because the man who has just boarded the bus must sit in your seat. Now, you are a woman, you are 42 and a seamstress and you’ve worked hard all day. This man, who may have worked hard today too, may have had a bad day or been fired from work was being offered your seat because the bus driver insisted you get up and give him your seat. But, the reason is not because this guy has had a hard day or because his circumstances are such that he should have the seat instead of you. No, he should have your seat because he is a different color than you. As I write this, it almost seems like I am writing some fictional story so preposterous that there was no way it could be true, or even merely based on some remnant of factual events. Unfortunately, the only fictional part of this story is that I made up the fact that it was just Ms. Rosa Parks that was asked to give up their seat. You see, the truth is, Ms. Rosa Parks was one of four black people sitting in the section right behind the white section of the bus. The bus driver demanded that all four people get up and move for this one man to sit down. All four were to move, for this one man to sit instead of stand. I was not alive back in 1974, and truthfully by the time I was old enough to understand the Civil Rights Movement in its entirety, it did not make sense to me. Not that the movement did not make sense, but that our beloved United States ever treated a group of people the way they did before the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement was the struggle of a group of people wanting what their society should guarantee and even more what hearts and minds alone can comprehend. How could our nation, whose constitution states “all men are created equal” have under her loving protection a group of people treated so unequally?

That day, Ms. Rosa Parks decided to stay in her seat and not let a man take it based solely on the color of his skin. She was a hero that day and sparked a movement that would be the first big step toward racial equality in our country and change history. In cities all across our nation in meeting rooms, churches, community organizations and even out in the streets the movement started by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was ignited again and in a united effort, black citizens refused to ride the buses creating a financial strain on the city of Montgomery. And in spite of threats and attacks, Dr. King persevered through his faith in God and then rallied support and perseverance of black citizens. Racial equality was finally recognized in this great nation of ours. There is no place for racism in our society for anyone. Take the opportunity this month to teach your kids about the importance of respect to all people based on them being a child of God, not the color of their skin or their abilities or disabilities in life. We are all here for a reason and if we are not respecters of persons, we will never advance as a people or a nation.

be 99 years old and his legacy lives on through the multitude of people whose lives he touched as one of the greatest collegiate basketball coaches in history. He exuded intelligence and class, and worked tirelessly to instill the concepts of teamwork, honesty, and fairness into those around him. He had three simple rules for his players at UCLA: • No profanity • Be on time • Never criticize your teammates The young men who played for him were molded by his influence and became direct reflections of Wooden’s mentoring. As for himself, John Wooden never used profanity, never drank, never smoked, and never caroused with other coaches on the road. He never answered a ringing phone if he was talking to you. He paid attention to the person in front of him, spending more time listening than talking about himself. People who remember him fondly say that he was as unpretentious as a human being could be- a letter from Mother Theresa hung on his wall right next to his granddaughter’s kindergarten report card. It wasn’t just a set of principles that John Wooden hammered into his team and those around him. He was able to shape the lives of many through who he was. Having a dynamic vision and chiseling a code of conduct into the wall for your people to live by simply isn’t enough. Living your vision and demonstrating your principles through your daily interaction with those around you can make you much more than a figurehead- it will transform you into a beacon for them to set their personal compass by.

The Great Bell County Quilt Crawl - A group of diverse cultural and tourism partners has come together to produce the county-wide Great Bell County Quilt Crawl.The quilt crawl will be held through February 18 at the following facilities: Cultural Activities Center, Temple; Railroad and Heritage Museum, Temple; Czech Heritage Museum, Temple; UMHB Museum, Belton; Bell County Museum, Belton; Salado Historical Society at the Robertson Plantation, Salado; and Killeen Arts & Activities Center, Killeen. Each facility will host a quilt exhibit for six weeks. Each Saturday during the time period, one of the sites will have a special activity that relates to quilts and quilting. Each partner will have its own designated Saturday, except for the Bell County Museum and UMHB Museum, which will be held on the same day. At each site, visitors can purchase, for $2, our uniquely shaped magnet. If visitors attend each exhibit and purchase a magnet at each site, they will have a complete 4 x 6 inch quilt magnet in red, white and blue. For more information, call 933-5243. Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity Playhouse Raffle - Purchase tickets to win this wonderful playhouse, which measures 5x7x8, has two windows, comes with a childsize picnic table inside, and has an adult-size door on the back side. Fishing for Comfort Bob Maindelle is a guide
in every sense of the word. When he isn’t guiding children as the children’s minister at Memorial Baptist Church in Killeen, he’s guiding aspiring fishermen and women in his other vocation as a fishing guide with his business, Holding the Line Guide Service. But for children of deployed soldiers, he’s their lighthouse guiding them through the rough emotional waters that come when one parent is away for often years at a time. “I started noticing a difference in kids after the second deployment to Iraq,” he said of the children in his church. “You could especially see it in the third, fourth and fifth grade boys. There was just a lot of anger and resentment. They didn’t understand why their dad or mom was gone for such a long stretch.” Maindelle figured what the kids needed most was a little one-onone time with a male adult. That is how he discovered his joy of fishing could be a healing salve for some of the children’s deepest cuts. And, with that, SKIFF (Soldiers’ Kids Involved in Fishing Fun) was born.
former West Point cadet has placed more than 110 children on the water during 54 guided fishing trips, resulting in a total of 2,962 fish. In 2009, Maindelle was invited to speak to the Austin Fly Fishers, a nonprofit group in Austin. Toward the tail end of his speech, Maindelle mentioned SKIFF and the children it served. By 8 a.m. the following day, the Austin Fly Fishers had committed to helping fundraise for the cause. “The organization really resonated with them, just like it does with me,” Maindelle said. Since that alliance was forged, the group has covered more than $3,500 in expenses for the trips, allowing the opportunity to remain free for soldiers’ children. Besides dedicating a chunk of his Saturday or holiday time to fishing with SKIFF kids, he takes the experience a step further, often snapping pictures of their catches to send to their deployed parents. Maindelle couples the photo with a blog about the trip.
“It was something I enjoyed and the kids enjoyed,” he said. “It was my way of using this skill to help someone else.”
“The moms always appreciate the pictures and stories,” Maindelle said. “But, I’ve even heard back from deployed soldiers saying thank you. That really means a lot.”

church or by a soldier’s spouse who heard of his services from a friend. No matter how they learned of the program, Maindelle is quick to point out that his calendar is always open to children of deployed soldiers.
“At West Point we are instilled to have a lifetime of service to the nation. And as a Christian I am to love God and love the people,” he said. “Fishing has become a way for me to express that with people and to serve those serving my country. I feel that I’m doing what I was built to do.”

Sometimes, fairly often as a matter of fact, I wish I had lived in the days of cast iron cookware and homemade biscuits. Yes, I know you can still cook with cast iron and if you are really feeling daring one day, you can make homemade biscuits from scratch – but who does that anymore? Back then, you had to cook from scratch with the tools you were given in order to survive. Now I have to make a conscious decision to make something homemade, because it is so much more convenient to just go to the store and pick up the quick fix.
I remember summers visiting my aunt and uncle. They were all about the green thumb and I was the interested type. In the mornings, after we drank our morning coffee (I’m about 8 years old at this point mind you), we would scour the peach and fig trees for ripe fruit and boy were there “figs a plenty.” So, naturally after the picking comes the jarring. My “Memaw” (grandmother) passed down her fig preserve recipe to my aunt which was the only way I knew figs could be prepared, other than as a filling in a little cookie. I was never a big fan of fig preserves, because I am a strawberry kind of girl, but it was the process that intrigued me.

1 can Tomato Sauce 4 tsp. Tomato Paste 1 tsp. Apple Cider Vinegar ½ tsp. Onion Powder ½ tsp. Garlic Powder ½ tsp. Salt ½ tsp. Chili Powder 1/3-1/2 cups Brown Sugar Directions: Blend all ingredients together in blender. Strain through sieve using a spatula to push liquid through. Chill to let flavors marry. For best results, serve with sweet potato fries. Note: All seasonings are subject to your own taste preferences.
I was watching the Food Network one day and the TV chef Giada was making homemade ketchup. The first thought that came to my mind was, “Wouldn’t it be easier to just buy ketchup from the store?” Of course it would be! That just goes to show you how desensitized I have become. As I thought through the idea and began researching existing ketchup recipes, a couple things stood out to me. First of all, the lack of preservatives in homemade ketchup means that it must be eaten in a timely manner so that it doesn’t go to waste. There’s one more excuse to stay in for dinner – it saves money & preserves family time. Secondly, small changes like this, from pre-packaged to homemade products, make a big difference in nutritional value. All natural is the best part of old-fashioned cooking.

My husband and I were wondering how you can determine whether you need to be on the low end or high end of that range? - Amanda Dear Amanda, Lots of times in a marriage you’ll have a situation where one person wants to save more, while the other is excited to move on toward investing. Technically, neither is wrong. So, the emergency fund really deals with someone’s own personal level of peace. Remember Murphy’s Law, and how it says that says if something can go wrong it will go wrong? Your emergency fund is Murphy Repellant. Some people just want to make sure he doesn’t knock on the door, while others make sure he stays in the next county! There are always practical considerations you can use to determine the amount of your emergency fund. If you both have very stable jobs, you’ll probably be okay saving up three or four months of expenses. But if just one of you works outside the home, or if one is self-employed or on commission, leaning toward the six month side is probably a good idea.

When You Give a Pig a Party. It’s a light-hearted, but oh so true, story about distraction. One project or treat is never enough. It always leads to something else. If I take a glass to the kitchen, I end up emptying the dishwasher. When I pick up the clothes on the floor, I might reorganize the closet in the process. Not that I am always that energetic, but nothing is ever simple. What’s a mom to do? I have heard the term “boundaries” thrown around a lot. That sounds like a fencing problem, but maybe it is appropriate. In this context, I need boundaries with what I am going to accomplish and when. Yes, my kitchen cabinets need organizing, but not while I am supposed to be cooking dinner or reading my toddlers a story. Just because I notice a need does not mean it needs to get done right away. Instead, I keep a list of potential projects to do as I have extra time. Additionally, most projects do not need to be finished all in one day, or even in one week. I may actually do a better job by breaking up big projects into smaller chunks. I don’t get overwhelmed by something big or rush to finish before I have to leave for an appointment. And while I love to spend time with my younger children, let’s face it, they are not helpful in the reorganization department. So, naptime is primetime for tackling those dreaded cabinets. My older children, on the other hand, are often drafted to help bag giveaways, wipe down surfaces, and hand me items as I sort, stack, and stuff. There’s nothing like bonding over a disorganized closet. Phone calls and email often distract me from tasks at hand. It never fails that I have to go look for something to answer the caller’s inquiry. My children do not have a computer of their own, but my oldest daughter is allowed to use my computer to email a few friends. I am realizing what an example I need to set for her in this area. If I waste my time on the computer, how can I tell her not to do the same? All email does not have to be read right away, much less answered. I glance through to see what needs immediate attention, delete what I know is junk, then leave the rest for later when I have extra time to sort through it. I limit Internet surfing to only what needs to be done, like looking up an address for a contact or researching a project. Otherwise, I use my wait times at appointments or in the grocery line to check Facebook or news sites.
Television is not a big issue for me. We cut cable several years ago both for the time waster that it is and for the relief to our budget. However, I know that TV can be a magnet that draws me and my children in without thinking. Rather than flipping through the channels endlessly, I pick one show to watch and turn off the set when it’s over. I line up something else to do and turn on music if I want background noise. We notice a completely different dynamic among the children and ourselves when the TV is not on all the time. For whatever reason (and I will leave the analysis to the professionals) our children are less whiney, and more cooperative when the TV has not been on all day. If that babysitter was a real person, she would be fired for her negative influence on our children’s behavior patterns.
Most of my days are fairly scheduled with work, kids’ activities, and homeschooling, so I arrange my day into blocks of time. Morning routines are done by 9 am. Finish individual school subjects by noon. Break for lunch and rest time. Group school subjects are done by 4 pm. Start supper by 5 pm. You get the picture. I thread my work and chores in here and there. Some of my responsibilities can overlap. I can check email or work while I am at one of my daughter’s activities. Overall, I do not lose sight of my goal for a clean house, a new work project, or quality time with my family. My boundaries keep me moving forward, sometimes at a snail’s pace, but always making progress. I work on bigger projects a little at a time. I guard my distractions from the phone, email, and TV by deciding what, when, and how to answer or watch. And I remember who and what is most important for today…my children and my influence in their lives.

THE GIFT GUIDE FOR WOMEN (& MEN) It really is the thought that counts. I’m known in my family as the gift guru. For some reason, I tend to select the just-right gift for the person its intended. And usually, due to my own budget constraints and a frugal nature, my gifts aren’t usually expensive. The trick is thoughtfulness. I try to think about the person I’m buying for, what they like, what their hobbies are and what is most important to them. Then, I select a gift that will enhance any one of these areas of their life. Whether you are buying for a husband, wife, child or friend, if you put thought into the gift, it will carry you through the gift-buying process. • A Night To Herself – This is my number one request for a wife gift. As a mom, there is nothing I crave so much as a remote control to myself for just one night. Go buy a night at a nice hotel for your wife, leave her some roses and bubble bath and let her have an evening alone. And, if you cash in hotel points, it might not cost you a dime!
So, what are you going to get for the love of your life, the rock upon which your family depends and the one who after all these years still puts a smile on your face…okay, so what to get for the man whose various stenches, farts and belches you’ve become oblivious to after all these years. I can only imagine my ideas for what to get the man in your life differs from the other side of this issue, but who knows. Here are some ideas for you to consider.
• A Clean House – With so much to juggle, the household chores can seem overwhelming. If you don’t have a regular housekeeper, purchase your wife or girlfriend a maid service visit, or better yet, buy it for six months or more. With a more rested other half, you will most likely reap valuable benefits in the end! • A Week of Dinners – Relieve the burden of dinnertime. Instead, plan a week of dinners for you (or you and the kids) to cook in place of your wife or girlfriend. Despite the sexual revolution, 85 percent of all kitchen duties fall to the female in the household. This Valentine’s Day, flip that statistic and make her week! • A Day of Relaxation – Purchase a spa day for her, send her out of the house for the day and then be scarce when she comes home. Take the kids to a movie so she when she comes home, she can linger in the glow of what wonderful spa day can bring.
• A gift card to Best Buy - Without giving him any idea, opinion or family need to consider before he spends it. Let him get that surround sound system he wants or Mad Max special limited box edition that no one, other than him, will ever want to watch. You could even get him the Mad Max coffee mug…yeah, they are out there and can be his for a mere fifteen dollars. • Jerky of the Month Club - So totally, there is a club that you can join, in your man’s name(hint hint), and he can get three fabulous selections each month of slowed cured animal flesh from the best smoke houses in the country. • Romantic Message in a bottle…And that is all I am saying about that…I’m just sayin’ a romantic message in a bottle. Just sayin… • How about a man bag - It is kind of like a purse, only it is made for a man. I’m just kidding. If your man wants one of these, or a fannie pack, move out immediately. • Custom Bobblehead for Guys - Yes, these do exist, and there is not a man on the face of the earth that would not like a bobblehead of themselves on their desk. Trust me, this gift would put a smile on the face of your guy for years to come!
