Camping: A budget friendly family vacation By Mandy Carter For an affordable family vacation that is filled with fun activities, nothing beats camping. I am a big believer that spending quality time with your kids is priceless and though traveling often seems pricey, vacation memories don't have to cost a fortune. Camping in a state park typically costs between $25 $30 a night and provides the family with a digital detox, an outdoor adventure and literally a breath of fresh air. Just keep in mind that the gear will be the costly part if this is your first camping trip … or borrow it for big savings.

Tips for camping with kids

For your first camping experience with kids, I recommend starting off with a one-night stay. This will give the kids a taste of how fun camping is without overwhelming them. Then add a night the next trip and so on. Nothing can sour a camping experience worse than coming home covered in mosquito bites. So bring plenty of bug repellent products from campsite sprays, specialty candles and protective lotions. Bring additional entertainment to keep everyone occupied when you are not exploring the area. Having board games, craft supplies, sporting activities, bubbles, etc. will keep everyone engaged for the whole trip.

Camping at Blue Springs

I recently spent a few days tent camping with the kids at Blue Springs State Park, which is about 45 minutes north of Orlando. The campsites are spacious and private and set within a scrub forest. Each campsite is equipped with electricity, water, a picnic table and fire ring. Bathrooms with warm water showers are within walking distance of the campsite loop.

There is a beautifully-maintained boardwalk that meanders along Blue Spring, the largest freshwater spring on the St. Johns River. This crystal-clear water stays at a constant 72 degrees year round–which feels much colder than I anticipated. So I suggest having wet suites or long sleeve water shirts at the very least. You can bring or rent inner tubes to take a leisurely drift downstream. Canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling and even scuba diving are popular water activities at this state park. The spring and its run are closed to swimmers and divers from mid-November until March to accommodate large herds of manatees. There are also numerous picnic areas, a playground, four-mile hiking trail and bicycle paths. Enjoying family time surrounded by nature is a memorable experience for all ages.Try booking a campsite at one of Florida’s State Parks for your next family or budget getaway.

Blue Springs State Park

2100 W French Ave, , Orange City, FL 32763 NOTE: Blue Spring State Park frequently reaches capacity during the week and on the weekends, during both the winter and summer months. To avoid being turned away, visit the park early and make reservations months in advance for cabins and campsites.

Water safety never goes out of style Courtesy of Lee Health Most drowning incidents nationwide occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day, according to Jamie Hoover, child advocacy coordinator with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. “Last year, Florida again led the nation in lives lost to drowning,” Jamie says. “Nationally, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children from 1 to 4 years of age. These deaths are 100 percent preventable.”

Water Safety Tips

• Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch children around any body of water. Designate a water watcher to supervise children in the pool or spa. • Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim. • Learn how to perform CPR on children and adults. • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes, and other openings to avoid entrapments. • Ensure any pool and spa you use has drain covers that meet federal safety standards.

Bike

Properly fitted helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries by at least 45 percent—yet less than half of children 14 and younger usually wear a bike helmet. “When shopping for a child’s helmet, include your child in the process,” says Sally Kreuscher, Safe Kids Coordinator with Golisano Children’s Hospital. “Children who pick out their helmet are more likely to wear it.”

“Nationally, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children from 1 to 4 years of age. These deaths are 100 percent preventable.” Jamie Hoover, Golisano Childen’s Hospital of Southwest Florida

Bike Safety Tips

• Always wear a safety-approved helmet and stop at all stop signs and stoplights. Ride on the right side of the road, with the flow of traffic. • Use appropriate hand signals and make eye contact with drivers.

Sun

As temperatures begin reaching well into the 90s, remember to apply sunscreen, limit your exposure to the sun, and protect your eyes with sunglasses.

Sun Protection Tips

• Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. • Wear clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible. • Seek shade when possible, and remember that the sun’s ultraviolet rays are strongest between 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. 48 - August 2018

Autism screening Aug. 10 for children in North Fort Myers Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Aug. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center at 2000 North Recreation Parkway. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders. To schedule a screening, call 239-3436838.

Mothers invited to join

Global Big Latch On

August 3 in Cape Coral, August 4 in Estero

Lee Health is once again inviting mothers to participate in the Global Big Latch On to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for global support. The annual event is held during World Breastfeeding Week in various locations around the world. This year, Lee Health’s Global Big Latch On events will take place: • Friday, Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Healthy Life Center – Cape Coral, 609 SE 13th Ct. • Saturday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. at the Healthy Life Center - Estero, 23190 Fashion Court, Suite 105 “The Global Big Latch On helps raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding,” explains Nancy Travis, RN, director, Women and Neonatal Services, Cape Coral Hospital. “The hope is that breastfeeding will become more accepted as part of everyday life, and more women will be encouraged and supported to breastfeed as long as possible to maximize the benefits for mom and child.” In addition to the Global Big Latch On at the Healthy Life Center - Estero, there will be Mommy and Me Yoga from 9 - 10 a.m. (space is limited; RSVP

required to 239-495-4475) The first Big Latch On took place in New Zealand in 2005, and has grown into a global event. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first 6 months of life, then continued breastfeeding and appropriate complementary foods up to 2 years of age, or beyond, as mutually desired by the mother and child. Benefits of breastfeeding: • Breast milk provides all of the nutrients your baby needs for the first 6 months of life. • Breastfed babies have fewer allergies, stomach problems, and respiratory and ear infections. • Breast milk is free and convenient. You always have a supply and it is always the perfect temperature. • Breastfeeding is good for the environment—there is no trash to discard. • Moms who breastfeed have a lower risk of breast cancer For more information about the Global Big Latch On, call Cape Coral Hospital at 239-424-3210 or the Healthy Life Center at 239-495-4475.
