Thefluisacontagiousrespiratory infectionthatis causedbythe influenzavirus. Symptomscan includefever, chills,drycough, muscleaches, fatigue,and occasionally vomitingand diarrhea.Apersonwiththeflu maynothaveall ofthesesymptoms.

HowcanIgettheflu?

Theinfluenzaviruscanbecontractedwhenpeoplecomeincontactwith infectedindividuals(thosewithsymptomsandthosewithoutsymptoms) throughdropletsthatcontainthevirus fromcoughing,sneezingandeventalking.Theseinfecteddropletsareinhaled

throughthemouthandnose.Onecan alsogettheinfectionbycomingincontactwithinfectedsurfacesandobjects andthentouchingthemouth,eyes,or nose.Peoplewiththeflumaybeinfectiousonedaypriortosymptomsstarting andupto5to7daysaftersymptoms begin.

HowcanIpreventfromgetting theflu?

Thereareseveralthingsthatyoucan dotopreventfromgettingtheflu.These include:

•Gettingthefluvaccine

•Washhandsfrequently

•Avoidtouchingeyes,mouth,and nose

•Avoidclosecontactwiththose whoaresick

•Ifyouaresickstayhomesoasto notinfectothers

•Covermouthandnosewhen coughingandsneezing

•Eatinghealthy,gettingplentyof rest,andexercisingregularly.

TheCDCrecommendsthatthose6 monthsoldandoldershouldgettheflu vaccine.

WhyshouldIconsidergettingthe fluvaccine?

Thefluinfectioncanbeunpredictable.Somepeoplehaveamild infectionwhileothersbecomeveryill andunfortunately,insomecases,death mayresulteveninpeoplewhowere previouslyhealthy.Theinfluenzavirus leavesapersonsusceptibletoinfection likepneumonia,canleadtodehydration,andcanworsenchronicmedical conditions(lungdisease,heartdisease, renaldisease).
