HPVvaccineshavethe potentialtosave over10,000 livesperyear! Incomparison, thatisfarmore thantheroughly200livessavedbythe meningitisvaccineswegiveto11and 16-year-olds.
HPVisasexuallytransmittedvirus thatisverycommon:60%-90%of adultsintheU.S.haveantibodiestoa strainofHPV.Someone'sfirstsexual
encounterwilllikelyinvolveexposure tothisvirus.Fortunately,mostofthe 150knownstrainsareharmless. However,theninestrainsthevaccine protectsagainstare“oncogenic,”or cancer-causing.Thesestrainsare responsibleforabout70%ofallthroat andmouthcancers,90%ofgenital warts,andmorethan90%ofallcervicalcancers.Theycausecancersinboth malesandfemales,sothevaccineis forallchildren,notjustgirls.
TheHPVvaccineisworkingbeyond anyone’swildestdreams.Forexample, inAustralia,whereuptakeofthevaccineisveryhigh,theyareontrackto eradicatecervicalcanceroverthenext decade.Wearebeginningtoseebig decreasesinthroatandmouthcancers too.Thesegenerallystrikeinlater adulthood,soittakeslongertosee improvements.
Itisrecommendedthatallchildren startthetwo-dosevaccineseriesatage 9to12years.Whywouldwegivea
vaccineforasexuallytransmittedvirus to9-year-olds?Becauseitsimplyworks betteratthatage.Theamountofantibodygeneratedfromthevaccine(and thereforetheabilitytofightoffthe HPV),whengiveninpre-orearlyadolescence,isgreaterthanifyouwait until14-16yearsold.Studiesshowthat theseriesismorelikelytobecompletedwhenstartedatthisage.
Sotwoinjectionsseparatedbyat leastsixmonthswhengiveninpreadolescence,canpreventthousandsof precancers,cancers,anddeaths.I wouldhatetohearaboutanyadult beingdiagnosedwithacancerthat couldhavebeenstoppedwithtwo shotsthattheymissedinelementaryor middleschool.
