In a Split Second By Becca Menig
On a beautifully clear June evening, two women took off together for their daily walk, blithely unaware it would be their last.
heard a noise and turned toward it, Pulejo saying, “That pickup is going too fast.” Their backs were to the speeding vehicle when it missed a curve and entered the parking lot, heading straight toward them. Benson got a glance just as it grazed her and watched in horror as the truck struck Pulejo, tossing her friend violently up into the air. “I remember thinking three stories high,” she says.
Barbara Benson and Gerry Pulejo’s friendship began as neighborhood mothers whose young children played with each other on the quiet suburban streets. It grew as their kids grew, sharing life events; weddings, divorces, deaths. Benson and Pulejo walked together for most evenings spanning 20 years. They would walk up to an hour or so, sometimes stopping to purchase lottery tickets. They shared the winnings and they shared their secrets.
The Ford 250 pickup had blown out two tires and presumably, the force of this bodily impact was strong enough to bust its radiator. “Gerry’s body hit the pavement,” Benson says, “then started rolling and rolled and rolled until she hit the curb. When I got to her, I knew she was gone.”
That summer night, well into their walk, they 9
It was 2 a.m. when Benson was released from the hospital with many broken bones in her hand which would require surgery, and a broken heart which would never, ever heal.
Someone from both The Counseling Place and MADD were with her for the duration of the trial, understanding the difficulty of testifying and the pain of it all. “I feel like he murdered my friend, he just didn’t have a gun, he had a car. He took her life.”
There was protection and help for Benson from the start; the first responders kept her occupied a distance from her friend on the pavement, her son took her home with him where she stayed for three weeks, and counseling was offered immediately by the local police department and also by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD). As a long-time resident of Richardson and an employee of the Richardson Independent School District, Benson was familiar with the services of The Counseling Place through the Richardson Police Department and she accepted the free sessions offered to victims of such traumas.
Still suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Survivor Guilt, Benson takes it day by day. Holidays are hard. Sunny June days are hard. A white pickup truck driving by her can bring on a panic attack and nightmares have not ceased. But Benson knows she is strong. She knows she is a survivor. She lost her parents early, leaving her and her brother to find their way as teenagers, and though it was decades later, she lost most of her remaining relatives; some tragically, all six within a single year. Then, her brother would take his own life.
Counseling helped and Benson is grateful for it. Advised early on, that it might be healing to share her story, she has done just that, now speaking regularly for MADD in the Victim Impact Panel. This is a mandatory, court ordered program for all first offenders. Benson speaks to teens and young adults; in Allen, usually with 20-25 in attendance and in Plano, with 75-80. Once a month she tells her story to 75-100 adults in McKinney. Whenever Benson speaks, she brings a beautiful photograph of herself and her friend, hoping it speaks volumes.
Benson, this summer newly retired, still lives in the same neighborhood and plans to continue her work with MADD. “Back in 2010, I thought I wanted to move. I wanted to make a change,” she says, and so she rented a house for six months, in a fun-filled, community development less than an hour away. “I thought I wanted to do something different,” says Benson but it turned out not to be so. Even before the rental period ended, she couldn’t wait to get home. “I couldn’t stand being away from Gerry. I didn’t have anyone to walk with.”
“Knowing that maybe I stopped someone from getting in a car – to me it’s worth my time and it honors Gerry. We don’t call them accidents. He chose to drink and drive so it’s not an accident,” says Benson of the drunk driver Louis Daitch, who at the time, was out of jail by just a week, with eight prior, assorted arrests. How much time he will ultimately serve is complicated but following the three day trial, Daitch was sentenced to 15 years for Pulejo’s death and three years for Benson’s injuries.
On June 18, 2011, she lost her walking partner forever.

Living the Dream By Melinda Cooper These days life moves fast or at least quicker than we originally thought it would. It’s easy to get caught up within our own lives that we forget those around us are indeed moving on in theirs. Allow me to begin with a simple question: If you had an open door directly in front of you, what would it lead to? That’s right, what would be in front of you? Will this new open door offer a new job, a new home, a new business, a family celebration or a new adventure?
Life is all about new doors opening, taking a new direction, even if it means deeper into the direction we are already moving. What we don’t recognize is that each door of opportunity is leading us to change and an opportunity to dream of a greater opportunity. Yes, it allows our hearts and our minds to believe there is something better for us; it gives us hope to live the dream we had as children imagining our lives. You may have heard of a song … “Somewhere 11

Martin Luther King said, “I have a dream …” and he gave his all to live it. He imagined a world of greater change and he became part of making that change. There are so many others I could discuss, yet I’m here to tell you it is your turn! I know deep within that is a little frightening. Yet I want to repeat, it is now your turn. Being Italian, my love of fashion is only rivaled by my strong need to cook. I just can’t help myself! This of course means a weekly outing to one of the many local farmers’ markets. If you are like me, the weekend comes and your excitement to get there supersedes your usual Saturday morning sleep-in. 22q13 By Nancy B. Mace “What is it like, raising a child with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome?” I put that question to Nancy Mace.Becca Menig, Editor “Every day is a blessing and a struggle,” she said.
THE BLESSING My husband John, and I, had been married for over a year and knew we wanted to have more children. I had a son, Patrick, from a previous relationship, now adopted by John. After trying for a couple of months to get pregnant, it happened but from the first ultrasound we knew something was wrong. I was placed on bed rest at about 7 months. After being in labor for over 24 hours, I gave birth by cesarean. My husband was right there beside me as our baby Zack, was rushed to ICU; he had jaundice and developed pneumonia. Since I had to be given a spinal block I was unable to sit up and after more than 24 hours I still had not been able to see my son. John finally picked me up, placed me in a wheel chair, and took me to see him. To us, he was perfect. Zack was in ICU for 7 days. Follow-up doctor’s appointments determined he had only one functioning kidney and would have to have the other kidney removed. He had surgery when he was 6 months old. Zack did not start walking until he was about 18 months old and around the age of 2, I started getting really concerned about his development. We were sent to a specialist, we even went to a genetics specialist in the area. The only thing they could tell us was that Zack was developmentally delayed, but trainable. What did this mean? Zack was not only developmentally delayed but non-verbal, and because of his disabilities, he was able to start school at 3 years-of-age. He was placed in a special needs class with other children under the age-of-five. When it was time for him to enter kindergarten, Zack was placed in a special needs school, Metro. He would be able to attend this school until he turned 22 years old. Metro followed the same schedule as the other schools in the area but finding after-school assistance for Zack was almost nonexistent. He could not go to a typical daycare facility. John and I had to plan our work schedules so that one of us was at home after school.
19
THE STRUGGLE The days seemed to get longer and struggles got harder. There we were, continuing to work full time with a 14 year-old, special needs child. Zack was still not toilet trained and we had no assistance for him. Patrick had turned 18 and left home. Social Security and Medicaid told us we made too much money and a developmentally delayed, but trainable diagnosis was not enough to get any assistance. John and I were resilient in applying for services. We were on a waiting list for almost 11 years but at age 14 ½, Zack finally was approved for full CAP services. This Community Alternatives Program for disabled adults meant we could get after-school care and have someone work with him outside the home. When Zack was 16 we decided to take him back for more genetic testing. It was a year-long wait for this appointment but after visiting with the same genetic specialist who saw Zack as a baby, now at age 17, we had an answer. Our son was diagnosed with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome.

THE SYNDROME Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (PMS), known also as 22q13 (twenty-two q one three), is a rare chromosomal disorder syndrome, affecting 1,000 people worldwide. Minor dysmorphic features and neonatal low muscle tone is often present and as these children age, they demonstrate global developmental delays in cognition, motor skills, speech, and toilet training. Some individuals have kidney abnormalities. Some children are autistic or have behaviors which fall under the autism spectrum. Children with PMS may have sleep disorders, seizures, unusually high tolerance to pain, and/or obsessive chewing of non-food items. Aggression may be seen in young children but as they grow into adulthood, a sweet disposition is very common. Zack is now 22 years-old, his brother is 26. Patrick calls him on the phone every week even though Zack can only say “Hey,” and blow kisses. We have been lucky that Zack has never had a seizure but we realize he could at any given time. Zack is very routine-oriented. Everything has to remain in the same place and of course that place is determined by Zack. He is a true Carolina Panthers fan and anything with the Panthers on it, has to go in his room. We get to watch movies constantly; over and over and over! John and I have learned to understand Zack’s wants and needs by sounds and gestures he makes. He does know some sign language but has only about 20 words in his vocabulary. In the past we were never really able to attend church due to Zack’s inability to stay seated or quiet for long periods of time and unfortunately, very few churches had a special needs class. We started attending a church almost two years ago and it has changed our lives. Zack now actually sits and listens to our minister. He knows the routine; when to stand, when to sit, and when to pray. It is a fairly large church, but it seems that everyone knows Zack. The minister gets a hug from him every Sunday after the service and we even have a Biker Ministry that has even given Zack motorcycle rides! There is a Plelan-McDermid conference held every two years. We had family who made it possible for us to attend last year. Zack was so outgoing there! At the conference there were a little over 100 families and it was great meeting children who are just like our son. There is a very strong support system for PMS. Parents and caregivers rely on each other. Zack will graduate from Metro in June and we are hopeful he will be able to enter a supportive employment program. Yes, every day is a blessing and a struggle. To hear Zack’s laugh and to see his smile makes every day worth it. We love Zack with all our hearts and cannot imagine what our lives would be like with him not in them. I love being his mother. It’s the best job I have ever had!”

Greens, Greens, Greens, Eat Your Greens By Ashly Torian My mama still says this to me today, “Ashly, eat your greens, they are so good for you,” and just the other day she said, “Ashly, I worry that you don’t get enough of a variety of greens.” Moms worry about us, so I guess it is our job as women, to make sure our children eat plenty of greens. So, I went on the hunt for greens; to see the variety and research why each one is so good for our bodies. I wanted to assure Mama that I am eating my greens … and plenty of them!
You see, she grew up with a garden. I have heard stories all my life about the nourishing and delicious vegetables her family had access to, growing up. That is an advantage of living in a small rural area. Their garden was filled with fresh, homegrown and organic collards, kale, cabbage, carrots, beets, radishes, and of course the ever beautiful and delightful apple and pear trees. They also grew muscadines and made the best jelly in the county. Mama’s family harvested the majority of the foods they ate … in my eyes, they were so lucky! Mama has always been adamant about greens. I remember when she would force my siblings and me to eat cooked spinach. I would be tempted to stand my ground and say, “No,” but my parents expected obedience and respect, and that is exactly what they got. Like it or not, we would eat the spinach. It wasn’t until I was grown that I realized Mama always served the cooked greens when Dad was out of town.
23
You see, he traveled every week to Frederick, Oklahoma, to the company factory for two to three days. Through this reflection, I realized my Daddy didn’t like them either! Mama was sneaky, but we are healthier for it. In fact, about seven years ago, she went and bought all five of us kids, a Blend Tec blender so we could drink green smoothies every day. I now love greens. My favorite is kale. Ten years ago, I didn’t think it would ever be possible for me to love kale. But I do; fresh, sautéed, dehydrated … yummy! If you like greens too, then you may already eat a lot of salads or drink green smoothies. Just today someone asked me if I still drink grass for breakfast. If this is the case for you, but you want to eat more variety of greens, then you are going to love the options I have listed below. Add these to your salads and smoothies so you are assured to get in all you need of greens.
If you don’t like greens, if the thought of them sends you running … then what I say next may send you running for the hills. The Romaine and Iceberg lettuce you eat for a side salad, isn’t going to cut it. Where Romaine has more nutrient value than Iceberg, your body is still in need of more. Most importantly, variety holds boredom at bay. The old saying, variety is the spice of life, is especially true when it comes to greens. There are so many available to us, you are bound to find a few that you like. Fix them in numerous ways. I have listed several options for each green to help you out. 24
GREAT GREENS TO INTEGRATE INTO SALADS, STIR-FRYS, AND SMOOTHIES Collard Greens These are fantastic! Prepare them the old southern way by steaming or because they are sturdy, use them like a lettuce wrap. Research shows they lower arteryclogging cholesterol better than spinach. Whether you are making yourself a green smoothie, fixing a sandwich or need a hot veggie for your meal … try collards.
Kale This is an earthy, bitter green. It is a winter vegetable so you will find it is sweeter during that season. It is packed full with Vitamins A and C and just one cup provides six times the daily requirement of bone-boosting Vitamin K. Kale is very nutrient dense. Because of its strong flavor, I have listed three serving options: 1. Enjoy them in a green smoothie. Start with a small amount; they can be quite strong. 2. Sauté in olive oil with onions, mushrooms and lamb … divine! 3. Dehydrate it for a delightful snack, kale chips.
Turnips Turnips are a bit bitter. The tops are loaded with Vitamin K and fiber. One cup provides 20 percent of Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for Vitamin B6. How to prep: 1. Blanching takes out some of the bite. Then toss with olive oil, garlic and lemon juice.
Bok Choy Bok Choy is a Chinese cabbage. It is mildly sweet and is a big source of calcium. Here is an interesting tidbit … It is a high source of calcium because it is low in oxalate which is a compound found in many other greens that blocks the absorption of the mineral. Bok Choy also contains 25 kinds of cancer-fighting antioxidants. How to prep: 1. Great in a stir-fry meal. 2. Toss with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast at 400 degrees for five minutes. 25
Watercress Watercress has oval shaped leaves with a peppery smell. They are packed full of carotenoids, with vision protecting nutrients and compounds that inhibit the growth of breast cancer tumors. How to prep: 1. Trim the stems and add the leaves to salads and sandwiches. 2. Dress up the plate with this peppery leaf when serving beef and pork chops.
Swiss Chard Eye-popping colorful stems mean fresh. Swiss Chard is a relative to the beet and is packed full of Vitamins A and C. Just one cup will supply more than 20 percent of your daily need for Iron. How to prep: 1. Soften the leaves by blanching in boiling salted water for a few minutes, then sautĂŠ them in olive oil, salt, and garlic. Toss with golden raisins. 2. Add them to a green smoothie.
Escarole Escarole looks a little like Romaine but has a firm texture and pale color with a slightly bitter taste. This green is nutrient dense with fiber, and folate which is good for the heart, along with Vitamins A, C, and K. How to prep: 1. The inner leaves are sweet, so they are very tasty in a salad. Cut off the end, remove the core, and toss the leaves with olive oil, fresh lemon juice and salt. Top with parmesan cheese. 2. Use the outer leaves in soups and chilis.
26
Belgian Endive The Belgian Endive is pronounced “on-deev.” It is loaded with vitamins A and K, folate, calcium, and manganese. Most importantly, it provides inulin which is a material that passes through most of our intestinal tract intact and then feeds the flora that live in the colon. This produces a component that helps our body to fight cancers to achieve better cholesterol and insulin levels. How to prep: 1.
The Endive leaves are like scoops so you can fill them with anything and make the perfect snack:
Crumbled blue cheese and roasted walnuts Hummus and red peppers Feta cheese and tomatoes Sesame butter and a pear slice
It is essential for your health to include a variety of greens in your diet. Begin experimenting one to two times per week by adding a new green with dinner or in your salad. These greens are tasty whether they are eaten raw, cooked, or in a smoothie.
And by the way … Dad now enjoys a green smoothie with Mama every morning. She does have a convincing way about her.
Enjoy! 27

for Garnish.
Watermelon and Red Onion Salad ½ medium red onion 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 5 to 6 cups watermelon, cut into chunks Salt Freshly ground black pepper Fresh mint leaves Black sesame seeds (optional)
Make a dressing by whisking together the olive oil with the vinegar. Set aside. (To increase the recipe, follow the ratio of 1
tablespoon vinegar to 3 tablespoons olive oil.) Peel one half of the onion and slice it very thin. In a small bowl, cover the onion slices with cold water and allow them to sit for about 20 minutes, changing the water several times. Drain then pat the onions dry. Return them to their bowl and pour the dressing over them, stirring to coat. Set aside. Place the watermelon chunks in a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add the onions and gently toss together. Tear fresh mint leaves over the salad and toss again. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.............just for fun!
33
Macaroni Salad Soak the onion in a bowl of cold water, changing the water frequently while you prepare the other salad ingredients. Before adding them to the pasta, drain the slices on paper towels. Shuck, wash and dry the ear of corn. Cut the kernels off the cob. In a small saucepan, heat the oil and cook the corn kernels until they take on some color, then remove the pan from the heat to cool. Drain and rinse the pimentos. Lay them out on a paper towel to dry.Whisk together the mayonnaise and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice until smooth. Season to taste with freshly ground white pepper. Set aside. Place the green peas in a bowl to begin to thaw. Bring a large stockpot of water to a boil. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of salt. When the water is boiling, drop the pasta and stir. Time the pasta to cook to al dente according to package instructions. Don't overcook. Drain the pasta and transfer it to a large bowl. Season with salt, add the green peas and gently toss. Allow the pasta to cool down. Don’t worry if the peas are still frozen; they’ll absorb the heat from the pasta. Once the pasta has cooled, add the drained onion, corn, pimentos, and lemon-mayonnaise, mixing to combine and distribute the dressing. Season the pasta with paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and additional salt if needed.Drizzle with the remaining 3 tablespoons of lemon juice and gently toss once more. Serve slightly chilled or at room temperature.

Place the chopped eggs in a small bowl and set aside. Mix together the mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, salt and pepper. Stir the mixture into the eggs. Add the tarragon and mix once more. Refrigerate if not eaten right away but allow the egg salad to warm up a bit before serving.
Egg Salad for Daddy 6 eggs, hard-boiled, peeled and chopped 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 2 teaspoons champagne vinegar Several grinds of black pepper Several fresh tarragon leaves, torn Mix all of the ingredients together.
Eat whenever you wish. 35
Lemon Fusilli Salad 6 small lemons 8 ounces fusilli salt & pepper a large sprig of rosemary a couple sprigs of parsley 3 to 4 tablespoons of great olive oil Trim the ends off of 5 of the lemons. Slice the lemons thinly and remove any seeds. Place the slices in a bowl large enough to later hold the pasta.
Remove the rosemary leaves and the parsley leaves from their stems. Chop each and set aside. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add a tablespoon or more of salt. Drop the fusilli and stir to quickly bring it back to a boil. Cook according to package instructions but only until al dente. Drain. Add the fusilli to the bowl of lemons, tossing to blend. Season with salt and pepper. Cut the remaining lemon in half and remove any visible seeds. Squeeze the juice from one lemon half over the pasta and stir. Cut the other half in two and set aside. Throw in the herbs, drizzle with 3 tablespoons of olive oil and gently toss again until the herbs are distributed and the pasta is coated. Allow the fusilli to cool a little before refrigerating. It may be served chilled or at room temperature. If you'd like, serve with a little more olive oil and a wedge of lemon to squeeze. Serves two dinner portions Add peas or asparagus, even pine nuts and Parmigiano but I find the lemon only version the most refreshing.}

WHAT’S HOT? MENOPAUSE! By Kathryn White, M.D.
Texas summers, night sweats and hot flashes oh my! There are several options to help women manage these and other symptoms related to menopause. This article will focus on two relatively new treatments. Hormone therapy is the most effective way to manage the myriad of symptoms related to menopause. There are traditional forms of hormone therapy and also bio-identical forms of hormone replacement. Bioidentical replacement means the products used are chemically similar to what the body produces naturally. There are a lot of bio-identical choices but this article will focus on pellet hormone therapy. First - Pellet therapy has actually been around for more than 60 years. This type of treatment fell out of favor in the U.S. with the emergence of typical drug therapy but is making resurgence in the past several years. This is still a very common form of treatment in Europe and other countries. What are pellets? They are compounded fused bio-identical forms of estrogen, testosterone, progesterone and even DHEA. The most commonly used pellets are estrogen and testosterone. Advantages of pellet therapy are ease of use, enhanced blood levels and more consistent absorption. They also avoid metabolism in the liver which is favorable for a variety of reasons. Pellets are generally placed in the hip during a very simple 2-3 minute in-office procedure and will last an average of 3-5 months.
39
Pellets may even be appropriate to use prior to menopause. Many women in their 40’s will often have a decline in their testosterone levels several years before actual menopause. Treatment will often restore not only their libido but also their energy levels and an enhanced sense of well-being. There are many symptoms which may indicate declining hormone levels so if you are experiencing any of the following, it may be a good idea to have your levels tested:
Hot flashes or night sweats Fatigue Hair loss Insomnia Decreased libido Decreased sexual function Headaches Brain fog/concentration issues Irritability/mood swings Recurrent bladder infections or urinary urgency Vaginal dryness or burning/pain during intercourse 40
Hormone therapy may not be appropriate for all women so it is important to discuss the options with your physician. Testosterone therapy is not FDA approved for women at this time but often used. Its use in women is considered off label. Not all physicians offer bio-identical hormone treatment or pellet therapy so you should check with your physician regarding this as well. Compounding pharmacies or of course the internet, are often a good resource to find doctors who do prescribe bio-identical hormones. Vaginal dryness and painful intercourse (also known as dyspareunia) are common symptoms of menopause and can be debilitating. This often interferes with a couple’s ability to remain intimate and can create significant stress and strain on relationships. Traditional treatments have focused on vaginal estrogen therapy in the form of either, creams, vaginal tablets or vaginal rings. Women often tire of the need for consistent usage and the fact that these treatments are often “messy” so they tend to stop over a period of time. There is now a new oral medication as well which is taken on a daily basis but again requires daily usage and has the potential for side effects. These options are also somewhat variable in their effectiveness. Second - Enter a completely novel approach to treating postmenopausal vaginal symptoms! The MonaLisa Touch™ is a new COᴤ laser which offers a brief in office procedure to treat these symptoms. Recommendations are three treatments 6 weeks apart with each treatment lasting only 3-5 minutes. The laser stimulates the vaginal walls to produce collagen which restores the moisture and elasticity to
41
the vagina. Over 5000 patients have been treated worldwide with up to 18 month follow-up showing significant improvement. There is no need for anesthesia and no downtime associated with the laser therapy. You can resume normal activities immediately. It is recommended to abstain from intercourse for 48 hours but there are no other limitations. There is no significant discomfort associated with the treatment as well. Many women describe it as a gentle vibration sensation. The MonaLisa Touch™ provides excellent long term improvement. Once yearly maintenance treatments help to maintain vaginal health. MonaLisa Touch™ therapy is a wonderful option for young breast cancer survivors or other women who cannot use hormonal therapy and have been suffering with significant symptoms. Finally - I am one of the first physicians in the North Dallas area to offer this procedure and am very excited about the ability to help so many patients who have been suffering with these symptoms. Menopause is a time of transition in our lives but we don’t have to be miserable! So check out these HOT new options and see if they might be right for you!

The ABCDE’s of Melanoma By Donna S. Barsky, D.Ph., R.Ph.
Do you know your ABCDE's of Melanoma? This could protect you from a future of suffering or no future at all. Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer; it starts in a mole and, if left untreated, gradually spreads throughout the body. While less common than other types of skin cancer, it is the most serious. Defined as a form of cancer beginning in melanocytes (cells making the pigment melanin), it may begin in a mole (skin melanoma), but can also begin in other pigmented tissues. Melanoma is able to affect your skin only, or may spread to your organs and bones. As with other cancers, treatment for melanoma works best when the cancer is found early. Most people who spend a lot of time in the sun do not get melanoma; however, the primary cause of most melanoma cases is spending too much time in the sun. People who live in sunny, high-altitude climates, or who have had one or more sunburn blisters (second degree burns, by the way) as a child and those who use tanning beds (which contain harmful UVA rays) on a regular basis are at risk. Fair freckled skin individuals are also at increased risk for melanoma.
43
Here's what you are looking for:
A - Asymmetry If you draw a line through this mole, the two halves will not match. B - Border The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven. The edges may be scalloped or notched C - Color Having a variety of colors is another warning signal. A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear. A melanoma may also become red, blue or some other color D - Diameter Melanomas usually are larger in diameter than the size of the eraser on your pencil Other Warning Signs: (1/4 inch or 6 mm), but they may sometimes be • The appearance of a smaller when first detected. new bump or nodule E - Evolving Any change — in size, shape, color, elevation, or another trait, or any new • Color spreads into symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting — surrounding skin points to danger. • redness or swelling beyond the mole • pain • tenderness Skin Cancer is growing at alarming rates. 2007 • itching Statistics from the American Cancer Society show • bleeding that: • oozing • scaly appearance 1 in every 5 Americans will develop skin cancer at some point during their lifetime 5 or more sunburns during your lifetime doubles your risk of developing skin cancer Sun protection is especially important in children because sunburns in early life can lead to skin cancer in adulthood.
80% of lifetime sun damage occurs in childhood. *Kids rarely allow proper sunscreen application when they play outdoors, ride bikes, go to recess or play on the playground. Melanoma is the second most common cancer in women ages 20-29; 1 person dies almost every hour (every 67 minutes) from this disease. Both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays can cause skin cancer. You can protect your skin and eyes in many different ways including sunscreen with SPF, seeking the shade, hats, sunglasses and sun protective/ultraviolet light protective clothing. 44
What is SPF? SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor.” The rating is based on using 1 ounce of product per full body application. So if your bottle of sunscreen is 4 ounces that means you would use about ¼ of that bottle to get that rating each time you use it all over! Should you be afraid of the sun, absolutely not! However, you must take precautions. Are you using enough sunscreen? For a majority of us, the answer is no.
Currently, sunscreens are measured by their sun protection factor (SPF) which is only a measure of UVB protection. Make sure your sunscreen says it is broad-spectrum and also protects against harmful UVA rays. Statistically, most people only use about 1/3 of the recommended amount of sunscreen. For example, if you were to apply an SPF 30 sunscreen to your skin, the actual volume of sunscreen that is typically used is only equal to an SPF 10. So it is important to realize that with sunscreen, the number on the label is not necessarily the amount of protection you’re actually receiving. Using a higher number SPF sunscreen helps increase your chances of getting enough sun protection. Remember that water, humidity, and sweating decrease the effectiveness of sunscreen and numerous reapplications are necessary.
What is sun protective/ultraviolet light clothing?
Normal summer clothing does not fully protect your skin from the sun. They rate less than SPF 8 when wet. The clothing uses fabric to protect your skin from damaging UVA & UVB rays and can be worn instead of using sunscreen on those areas. But don’t forget to wear sunscreen on the uncovered areas like the neck and ears. The fabric is rated according to an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (“UPF”) similar to “SPF” for Sunscreen.
What is the difference between UPF and SPF?
UPF is like SPF except UPF rates fabric protection against both UVA and UVB. A garment with a UPF of 50 only allows 1/50th of the UV radiation falling on the surface of the garment to pass through it. In other words, it blocks 49/50ths or 98% of the UV radiation. Factors such as tighter knit or weave, thickness, and dark color can increase UPF. 45
What are the benefits of sun protective clothing?
Does not wash off Does not need to be reapplied Is long lasting – can be washed and dries quickly Has no known skin reactions from UV-absorbing compounds in the fabrics Is more reliable in protecting against sunburns Is a “rash guard” against surfboard and body-board rashes Saves money! The clothing actually reduces the need for expensive sunscreens and lotions and pays for itself quickly.

Believing is Seeing By Kathryn Eriksen, PhD in Heart Dancing
My mother used to remind me that “Seeing is believing.” She usually trotted out this phrase when I wanted the treat before finishing my chores. I quickly learned that if I wanted the reward, I had to show her physical evidence of my efforts.
Imagine the ramifications of that statement. It means that we can co-create with the Universe. What we imagine and perceive from our unique perspective is translated by the Universe into form. That is incredibly empowering!
Fast forward (too many decades) to my present self. I no longer have to see something to believe that it is true. In fact, I have discovered that life really works in the exact opposite order – belief comes first, then you see what you believe.
But it was the next thing that Dr. Houston said that rocked my world: What that If you change the way you means, view the Universe, the friends, is Universe itself spontaneously that what reflects that change back to you you. The Universe is not perceive will separate from your be directly perception. reflected back to you. If you don’t like what you see in your life — it is up to you to change your perception. Just sit with those two sentences for a moment and see if they don’t resonate with truth. They certainly did for me.
Follow my logic and let’s see if I am right. Yesterday I listened to a podcast interview of Dr. Jean Houston, who is regarded as one of the principal founders of the Human Potential Movement. During the interview, one sentence really struck me in the gut. It was this: You live in the Universe. The Universe lives in you.
Let’s take this a step further. If you look at your life as it exists today and see things that do not make you happy, can you change your perception about them? The answer is yes, as long as you believe you can make that change. If you don’t believe you can, then you can’t. Which brings up another point that is important to grasp.
48
What are beliefs?
way I can look at this?” See if you can’t create at least three to five new, empowering views of each item and notice how you feel as you consider the new possibilities. Write down these ideas on the right hand side. Continue until you have worked your way through your list.
Beliefs are just a collection of thoughts bundled around a theme. Your beliefs form because of your experiences, so that when you encounter a similar situation, you will recognize it and have a touch point to interpret it. Every time something triggers that belief, your mind trots it out to filter your present reality. And guess what – you see what you believe.
Now, consider how you feel when you focus on the left, unhappy side. Compare that feeling to how you feel when you focus on the right, happy side. Did you feel the shift in your emotions? One minute you might have felt depressed because your nose is too big, and then you felt happy because you can always be recognized in a crowd!
That is why people perceive the same event differently. Their beliefs form a filter that blocks the non-corroborating data that does not support the belief. The belief filter allows the supporting bits of data to come through and the underlying belief is proven once again.
This exercise is valuable and proves that your beliefs direct your feelings. The bottom line is that you decide what you believe. You choose how you feel based on your beliefs. And the Universe will reflect your choices back to you. Why not choose happiness over despair, joy over sadness, abundance more than limitation? Whatever you choose, that is what you will see.
If you believe that money is hard to come by, it will be. If you believe that you are no good at love, you won’t be. If you believe that you are miserable in your job, you will be, because your perception will only see the people and things that support that belief. See how this works? Let’s try a simple exercise that will show you the power of beliefs. It will also reveal another truth – that your emotions are triggered by your beliefs, not the other way around.
When you make that shift and begin to notice how your beliefs impact your perception, which then filters your world, it is life changing! And those shifts in perception – from pain and anger to joy and happiness – are all steps in the Heart Dance!
Look at the areas of your life where you are less than happy. Job, career, health, appearance; whatever area of your life that you believe is not working. Keep your list short – let’s only work with two or three items. Identify what makes you unhappy in each area. It helps to make your Unhappy List on the left side of the page.
That shift to empowerment also turns the old adage, seeing is believing, right on its head. It should really say, believing is seeing. You Are The Fire! By Kim Andrews Fear. Sometimes abject terror. Fear of failure. Fear of success. Fear of being judged delusional about my talents. How had I gotten here? What made me think writing a book was a good idea?
mission. They searched their hearts, laid out their vulnerability in their stories, and I knew I could not face them or live with myself if I quit. I persisted. Three steps forward and five steps back. Whenever I sat down to write when another woman signed on, the fire gained power, burned brighter and hotter. I defined my mission and composed a call to action. I designed a slick contributor’s packet and purposefully sought out more women to write stories. Sometimes I got tired of tending the fire and retreated. For months I would ignore my writing. Eventually though, my failure to press on left me feeling small and I ran back to the project.
About 15 years ago, I was divinely inspired to write a book – an anthology of women’s letters about their watershed experiences and the wisdom it taught them. At the time nothing sounded crazier than that. I already had my life all figured out. But a spark had been lit right in the center of my complacency.
Somewhere along the journey I noticed the terror I first felt had dissipated into fear. Then the fear segued into exhilaration. I learned that I liked tending the fire, doing the work that previously scared me. I stopped making excuses and embraced whatever helped fuel my fire. I latched onto songs that spoke to my heart. I even replayed the last 6 minutes of a movie every day for months because it rocked my very soul. Then I started spending time with people who motivated me to step up my game. I found a mentor. Money and advisors and information showed up exactly when I needed them.
I tried to ignore it. However, over the next few years the idea kept presenting itself in all kinds of ways. I could not get away from it. So I half-heartedly took up the mantle and added kindling to that tiny spark. First, I started writing my own stories. Then I asked women I knew and admired, to contribute. I received referrals to ordinary women doing extraordinary things. I bumped along with the project, running scared when each and every woman said “Yes.” I was afraid they would think I was totally incapable of pulling off such a project. More so, I was also afraid to disappoint them. They had joined my
The once small spark was now a wild bonfire. 52
Yes, I wanted to finish the book and get it published but about two-thirds along the way the end game became just as important as the journey. Every day I got to stretch my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual muscles and I was getting buff. I discovered I had tenacity and power. I had a clarity of purpose that was palpable to people I encountered. I discovered I was a woman of wisdom, the same thing I sought to inspire in women around the world through my mission. And what of the fear? It is gone. The exhilaration is still there. That same exhilaration I felt on roller coasters as the car tipped over the tallest hill and I threw up my arms as the car thundered down the track. The same exhilaration I felt watching that movie clip. Yes, the same exhilaration I felt the day I finished book. The same exhilaration I felt when the publisher told me my book was just released on Amazon.com. What of the fire now? I am the fire. Embrace your dreams. Find what fuels your passion and stoke those coals. Do the work. Persist through your fears. You are the fire!

My Life As …Would I be better off?? By Laura Klekar
This question came up in my head the other day - Would I be better off if I only.... You see I tend to have unconventional views on a lot of issues like marriage, religion, taxes, home ownership and so on. I recognize this about myself. Yet, sometimes I wonder if I would be better off if I had more confirming views, views that were in line with the greater majority. Lets take marriage for example. I have been with my significant partner for close to 7 years. We have lived together for almost 6 years. And yes I get the question - When do you think the two of you will get married? Or why haven't you gotten married yet? And my favorite -why hasn't he hasn't popped the question yet...among other questions. Then there are people who refer to my significant other as my husband -even if they know he is not I have nothing against marriage itself. I just don't see the need to get married right now. I feel pretty good about where my relationship is now. Both me and my significant other are in no rush to go down the alter. However, sometimes I wonder if my life would be easier if I did get married.
Our relationship would be easier to define by law (that is a major issue with me, the legality part. Why do I need a legal contract for my romantic relationship to be recognized by the government?!). I also think it would be more accepted by society. People met, date, get married. End of story. I do a lot of networking and meet a lot of various people and I do get that look sometimes when I talked about my boyfriend of 7 years. "Why isn't he her husband?" I hear them thinking. I sort of get that look - "oh ‌live-in boyfriend..." So the reason I am blogging about this is to address the idea of - would I just be better off if I went against what is working for me know and went ahead and did something that is more acceptable and understandable by society. The quick answer is no. But is it that simple? I have a feeling that people grapple with this question a lot in various area of their life. Would it be easier if I just went back to a corporate job? Would it be easier if I just had a more mainstream hobby? Would my life be easier if I just did things the way {fill in the blank} thinks I should (family, friends, co-workers, congregation, neighbors). This can be a very difficult question. You want to follow your own path, do what feels right to you, and stand by your personal values and beliefs. Yet, you also want to feel like a part of society, that you are accepted by your community and those you love and care about. I know, I know if people truly loved you , they would accept you regardless. I do agree with that, but is that always the reality..... It can be tough. Staying true to your own voice and feeling pressured by your community or what society expects. Yet, I feel the worse scenario is when you abandon your innate values and beliefs in order to fit into a mold that only serves others. What about you? What do you want? What is best for you? I really don't have a clear answer here, only that I feel that while it may seem you are better off if you give in to what is expected, it will not benefit you or those around you in the end. If I got married simply because it is expected and would help people understand my relationship, that would not be a successful marriage. For me it needs to be the right time and next step for me and my significant other in order for the marriage to be successful. Marriages have enough obstacles without adding in getting married due to perceived pressure. While I will not be getting married anytime soon unless I feel it is the best step for me and my partner I still wonder now and then...would I be better off..... Sometimes an unconventional life is the best life for me Are you looking for support in stepping out into your own and doing what is best for YOU? You will find that while the following destination spas embody distinctive facilities and guest experiences they are also dedicated to practices and programs that pay respect to, and lessen our footprint on, our changing environment.
No matter where you live around the country there is no doubt a fabulous spa within easy distance offering you a positive journey; a sanctuary where beauty and wellbeing converge and a place to bring back balance to your mind, body and soul. Enjoy a sensory journey of your own at a destination spa near you.
