Slavery in the 21st Century A look at the unnoticed and overlooked rise of the sex trafficking industry by Elaine Parrish
Sex trafficking has become a thriving industry, both in the United States and globally. Massive profits and unbridled demand for sex services has led to commodifying of human beings and has established sex trafficking as a modern-day form of slavery. And the numbers are mindboggling! According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds.
The United States Advisory Council on Human Trafficking established the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act in May of 2015. Then, on December 16, 2015, President Obama appointed 11 members to the United States Advisory Council on Human Trafficking. The appointees came from a diverse set of backgrounds and experiences, and each is a survivor of human trafficking, bringing their own unique perspectives and experiences to bear. Then, on February 23, 9
2017, President Trump pledged to bring the full force of the government to helping rid the U.S. of this crime. Still, there is much work to be done!
In earlier times, brothels, bars and massage parlors were the settings for engaging in sex crimes. Today, victims are exploited in hotels and apartments where there is less visibility. Once under the control of the trafficker, it is increasingly difficult for the victim to escape. Widespread awareness of the traffickers’ manipulative practices is imperative. Victims must start to know they can safely report coercion and abuse; and housing and counselling for those who do manage to escape must be made available.
Though sex trafficking is prohibited by U.S. law and by statute in most countries, it is estimated that 21 million people were trafficked for sex in 2016 with estimated profits of $32 billion! Human trafficking has surpassed the illegal sale of arms and will surpass the illegal sale of drugs over the next few years.
Because of lingering shame and a social stigma, victims remain silent. It is estimated that only 6 of every 1,000 perpetrators of sexual crimes ever enter prison. Social conditioning has created an environment where people simply look the other way. We’ve all read and heard about accusations of sexual abuse by noted celebrities such as Casey Affleck, Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski, Woody Allen, Mike Tyson, Kobe Bryant, Paul Reubens and others. Yet, they win awards and continue to live robust lives while those who have accused them are often rebuked and discredited. So, most victims remain silent and captive to their abusers.
Governments around the globe have enacted laws that criminalize trafficking and have established protection and prevention efforts to raise public consciousness and to help victims to rebuild their lives. Still, millions are coerced, manipulated and exploited. In too many countries there is little to no evidence of any significant effort to investigate, prosecute, and/or convict traffickers or to provide assistance to victims. Traffickers use violence and threats or promises of jobs, money for school and romance. Poverty, isolation, joblessness and abusive or stressed living conditions help create a rich environment for traffickers. Runaways and homeless teens are frequent targets. It is estimated that 76 percent of transactions for sex with underage girls start on the Internet. Child trafficking victims come from all backgrounds; ages range from 1 to 18 years.
The consequences to victims are devastating, especially for children. They suffer long-term physical and psychological trauma, disease, addiction, social isolation, unwanted pregnancies and death. Having already endured a life of sex slavery, those who are rescued are doubted and demeaned and find it difficult to recover from the abuse they have suffered and the rejection they encounter as they attempt to re-enter society.
While it is helpful that laws have been put in place, focus still must be placed on (1) stopping people from being coerced into slavery situations and (2) helping them recover once they are rescued.
As awareness builds, industries, organizations and individuals are beginning
10
to get involved, and they are making a difference!
On March 25, Alicia and Treasured Vessels Foundation will host the Inaugural Stix and Brix Event to bring the community together to learn about child sex trafficking in the Dallas area and what each of us can do to help. Tiffany Hendra of Real Housewives of Dallas and Creator of Sanctuary of Style will emcee, and Withelma “T Ortiz Walker Pettigrew, a Survivor Leader and nationally recognized policy consultant will educate attendees on this horrific crime and what can be done to stop it. Previously, she specialized in developing strategies to end domestic child sex trafficking, reforming the child welfare, juvenile justice and mental health systems and implementing policies and practices to ensure that all vulnerable children have an opportunity to thrive. Named by TIME magazine one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World" in 2014 and one of the "30 People Under 30 Changing the World" in 2013, T was also honored by Glamour magazine as a "Woman of the Year" in 2011.
Airline Ambassadors International became inspired to get involved in 2009 when they learned about human trafficking amidst the rescue of an abandoned child in Cambodia. In 2011, they premiered a training program and have subsequently provided more than 40 trainings to 4,000+ airline personnel. Their curriculum has been adopted by the International Tourism Management Bureau. Flight attendants are taught to report suspects to the pilot, and the pilot calls ahead so that authorities can be notified to meet the plane. U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 2,000 human traffickers and identified 400 victims in 2016.
To learn how you can get involved and help build houses and provide much needed counselling for these young girls, join us at the Stix and Brix Event on March 25, or go to www.treasuredvesselsfoundation.org.
Alicia Bush intends for that to change! In 2015, she founded Treasured Vessels Foundation. She is on a mission and has secured over 20 acres north of Dallas on which she intends to build a secure facility to house, rehabilitate, and shape a successful future for females ages 12-17 rescued from sex trafficking in the DFW area. She is aligning with organizations that can help ensure comprehensive care and therapy as these girls heal and restore hope.

Yes, the skeptic in me roared but the believer in me whispered, “Okay, prove it!” And Dr. Michael Einsohn, D.C., founder of the Thermography Center of Dallas, did exactly that. When agreeing to take the test, I purposely failed to reveal on patient forms that I have an autoimmune issue, lupus, which in my estimation should throw up red flags in a thermogram. So, yes, Dr. Michael bring it on! The 30-minute test is simple, quick and non-invasive. An initial set of measurements is taken of precise skin temperatures of body organs. Much like trigger points, acupuncture meridians, your body has spots where temperature may be accurately monitored. Some such are those across your forehead, hence the thermometers that you run across your face instead of placing under your tongue. Same basic idea. Once they have readings from your whole body, they activate your body's regulatory system by chilling you down. Not to the degree of cryo-theraphy, brrr, but a ten-minute cooling period (those with trouble standing can lean against a high stool) standing in only
your underwear. This is followed by a second set of measurements, a true reading. The test data is then computed by the system and the results are returned for consultation with your doctor and in my case, Dr. Michael, who firmly says, “This technology is the most comprehensive evaluation of the functioning of the internal organs of the human body.” Skin temperature determined by influences of the nervous system’s innervations to the capillary beds constrict or dilate in response to the cool air. Your thermogram is very specific to your unique biochemical profile because your skin temperature is influenced by your nervous system’s innervations which dilate in cool air. As your nervous system reacts to the cooler air, signals travel from your spinal cord through the nerves that innervate the organs where temperature and information can then be measured. The regulation thermography tool measures the difference between the two temperatures taken before and after the cool air exposure. This data is compared to a database of healthy patients and reveals deviations that identify patterns that are reflected in easy to understand charts and reports. The reports are objectively, mathematically written and available the same day. Comparing temperatures before and after stress has proven to correlate with imbalances often related to degenerative or inflammatory conditions. A definite benefit of the Thermography Center of Dallas was their openness and easy response to all my questions. The medic in me wants to understand the technology, but reasoning behind why it is such a valuable test. How is it going to benefit me, what will it show and how does it determine areas that might be issues of concern? I was very comfortable and at ease with the professionalism and knowledge of all the staff. We all glow. Your body emits thermal energy (in the form of infrared heat) that can be used to reveal some of what is going on in your body but that is hidden from sight and not yet felt through symptoms like pain or discomfort. You can use the information revealed to detect abnormalities and correlations to health issues, as the theory behind thermal imaging, also called digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI), is that normal and abnormal tissues have different heat signatures. So, a thermogram, when read by an experienced examiner and run through the proper computer analyses, may reveal the infrared evidence of a potential or actual health issue that may not yet be detectable by other means, such as an X-ray, CAT scan, or MRI. In my book, that is major prevention! Thermography offers several benefits: With early warning of a potential problem, you can take immediate action to address the issue with your primary care physician, providing the time to carefully consider all your treatment options and perhaps even heading off the problem before it becomes serious.
In many cases, thermography can be useful to track changes in a condition. Once you have a baseline thermal reading, subsequent thermograms will reveal temperature deviations over time. This may provide valuable information to you and your physician for gauging whether a condition is getting better or not, and even whether a treatment is working well or not. Although thermography cannot see deep into the body, it can detect many of the thermal indications of abnormalities near the surface, including those often associated with:
• • • • • • • • • • • • •
Inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis Arterial blockages Soft-tissue and sports injuries Carpal tunnel syndrome Spinal disc and back issues Metabolic disorders Auto-immune disease Rheumatic conditions, including vaculitis Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder) Nerve problems, diabetic neuropathy Some thyroid conditions Internal growths and some kinds of tumors
The results are documented in a graph, which revealed my body reactions, the functional health of my various organs and their neurological control systems. This graph was read by Dr. Michael but your results can be sent to your physician or a licensed thermography interpreter who will send a completed written report your health practitioner. In the report, there are three levels per sections of your body of concern. After my reading, Einsohn performed a kinesiology exam and further determine areas for concern and those to not worry about. From the graph, there were several areas in mid-range and one or two in high-range. For a brief, moment, my heart stood still. Heart issue, pancreas. Yikes! Why did I take this test? Do I want to know this? Breathe, Robin! Yes, I want to know more. Get on with the exam. As my rational brain took over, I remembered I did not tell them I had lupus and this report seems to
point to autoimmune or mid body issues. Lightbulb, this is my lupus. Good catch by the thermogram! And after examination, Dr. Michael assures me there are no areas of major concern but I have issues mid-body. At this time, I told the truth and a slow grin spread across his face and his eyes searched mine, as he knows his exam PROVED to this skeptic that thermography is an excellent diagnostic tool and especially since it can determine breast abnormalities many years before a standard mammogram. I am a believer, as it really did point out issues that I was aware of or felt might be something I was experiencing. Luckily, nothing critical, but certainly things I can change for better health. I am working to change my body’s acidity to a more alkaline based one and learning how my body metabolizes certain foods. By taking small steps, I know I can make giant leaps to healthier living. Call the Thermography Center, ask for Marta Cordell, and tell her I sent you. She can provide all the information you may need, book an appointment for a consultation or examination or walk you through the whole process. She performed my exam and I asked a million questions that she patiently and thoroughly answered. I am a happy client, better informed about my overall health and was given options for change.
Dr. Michael Einsohn D.C. is founder of the Dallas Thermography Center and has analyzed over 10,000 thermography reports. He also specializes in Applied Kinesiology and Contact Reflex Analysis. Dr. Einsohn has a BSc degree and graduated from Parker College of Chiropractic where he also studied Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique (B.E.S.T.). He has practiced in Dallas, TX since 1987 and, also travels to teach other health professionals. 214.352.8758 www.thermographycenter.com

Undervalued Leadership Traits of Femmes By DeeDee Lowder
21
It is impossible to respect, value and admire great leadership if you cannot identify what makes a leader great. Because of this, the identity crisis that exists in today’s workplace is something that women leaders have been facing for much too long. While the tide is changing and more women are being elevated into leadership roles, there is still much work to do. Yet, even while the number of female leaders, 20 elected presidents and prime ministers in power around the world, has more than doubled since 2005, a woman in power is hardly the norm. Economists and academics agree women entrepreneurs are an under-tapped force that can rekindle economic expansion. Today’s entrepreneurial women own over 40% of all businesses, so what’s good for women is good for the economy. Our decision-making processes, the dynamics and subtleties of our feminine personality and style, and other special character qualities that we women possess make us exceptional leaders with our fingers on the pulse of culture; we can discuss the latest popculture news, then quickly switch gears to give a perspective on what is taking place on Wall Street and global markets. As women continue the upward trajectory in the business world, we have yet to be fully appreciated for the unique qualities and abilities they bring to the workplace. The best women leaders I know have exceptional vision that enables them to be well-rounded people seeking a chance to be significant, to see the world through a lens of opportunity; opportunities previously unseen. We are master multi-taskers and highly collaborative. They enjoy their own space to test themselves and find their own rhythm. The women leaders I know invest in themselves and become knowledge seekers. They are not afraid to ask questions when given a safe platform to express themselves. We are also more inspired to adopt new ideas and ideals. Though extremely curious, it’s often balanced with a bit of skepticism or maybe a reality check. My experiences have taught me that women leaders need to trust a person before they will endorse what they have to say. Many just want to know that there is legitimacy behind the opportunity.
22
Most business women want things to be authentic yet practical and enjoy a good challenge – we seek to find meaning and purpose from each circumstance faced and opportunity given. We like to see and understand the connectivity of thoughts and how they work or why they don’t. And women want all the facts and figures before making important decisions. The value proposition is very important! Successful women leaders do not rely on favors; they earn respect and truly believe they can influence their own advancement by serving others. Competitiveness amongst us may be more about validation than anything else. We all want an identity that matters and a voice that is heard. Those who have reached a level of influence and leadership say that being in the spotlight is not what drives them, but rather it’s the ability to influence positive outcomes with maximum impact. But one thing for sure… female leaders understand survival, renewal and reinvention; have grit and are not afraid to fight for what they believe in or an opportunity to achieve something significant. They believe in what they stand for, but that doesn’t mean they won’t put their ideas and ideals to the test. For them, doing more with less is simply a matter of knowing how to strategically activate those around them. In our new department, femmes on fire, in femmes INTERNATIONAL Magazine we will be showcasing women in various countries around the world who are using their voices, building their businesses, making changes that affect people’s lives. As they grow, expand and meet the challenges of business ownership, standing for causes or issues facing humanity or stepping up to follow their passions, we will be by their sides following their steps, progress and failures. We will cheer them and support their paths. To the great women, we will be honoring and following, thank you for inspiring and leading in your businesses and communities: Leah Laprise, Montreal, Canada, Ashley Berges, Dallas, Texas, United States, Ekaterina Petersil, Singapore and Chando Lydia Lauryn, Rwanda. These women exhibit the leadership traits that powerful leaders naturally possess and which are the most undervalued.
23
1. Opportunity-driven When confronted with a challenge, they look for the opportunity within. Optimism is their mindset because they see opportunity in everything. 2. Strategic Women see what often time others do not. They know what cards to play and keenly calculate the timing of each move they make. When things are happening organically, this means that they are functioning within a natural rhythm and speed – that is safer and risk adverse. 3. Passionate
I believe we women are passionate explorers in pursuit of excellence. When
women leaders are not satisfied with the status quo, we want to make things better. Consider women leaders as potent pioneers of new possibilities. 4. Entrepreneurial
Entrepreneurship is a way of life for many women. It allows one to be
extremely resourceful, connect the dots of opportunity and become expert in developing the relationships needed to get the job done. Women like control; not necessarily to be in charge, but to not lose the rhythm or compromise the momentum to accomplish the goal. 5. Purposeful and Meaningful
Many women leaders enjoy inspiring and motivating others to
achieve; we enjoy creating ecosystems and support a collaborative leadership style; melding the thinking and ideas of others; this is what multiplies the size of an opportunity and/or its speed in execution in order to create a larger sphere of influence and overall impact. 6. Traditions and Family
Whether at home or at work, women are often the glue that keeps
things together and that is why they represent great leadership for America’s future. When we sense growing tensions that can lead to potential problems or inefficiencies, the most successful women leaders enjoy taking charge before circumstances force their hand. And most successful women leaders are big believers in team building and the enforcement of mission, goals and values to assure that everyone is on the same page with like intentions. This secures a sense of continuity making it easier for everyone to have each other’s backs.

Artichoke Puff Pastry with Aioli Ingredients: For the aioli: 1 egg yolk 1 garlic clove Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup (4 fl. oz./125 ml) vegetable oil 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper, plus more to taste 2 Tbs. prepared horseradish, plus more to taste
For the artichokes: 1/2 lemon 4 large artichokes 4 Tbs. (1/2 stick) (2 oz./60 g) unsalted butter 6 garlic cloves 3 fresh thyme sprigs 1 cup (8 fl. oz./250 ml) white wine 3 cups (24 fl. oz./750 ml) chicken stock Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper To make the aioli, in a small food processor, combine the egg yolk, garlic and a pinch each of salt and pepper. Pulse several times until the garlic is finely chopped and the ingredients are combined. With the machine running, slowly add a few drops of the oil, then follow with a slow and steady stream of oil until the mixture is thoroughly combined. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the cayenne and horseradish, adding more to taste if desired. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. To prepare the artichokes, fill a bowl with water and squeeze the juice from the lemon half into it. Working with one artichoke at a time, snap off the dark green leaves until you reach the tender yellow inner leaves. Using a small, sharp knife, pare away any tough green patches from the bottom of the artichoke, then cut off the top 2 inches (5 cm) of the artichoke. Cut the artichoke in half lengthwise, then scoop out the fuzzy choke. Drop the artichoke halves into the lemon water as you finish trimming them to prevent them from discoloring. 29
In a large sautÊ pan over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add the artichokes, garlic and thyme and cook, stirring occasionally, until the artichokes are golden brown all over, about 4 minutes. Add the wine and chicken stock and a pinch each of salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover and simmer until the artichokes are very tender, 25 to 30 minutes. Remove the artichokes from the liquid and cut each piece in half lengthwise. Sprinkle the aioli lightly with cayenne, if desired, and serve the artichokes with the aioli alongside. Serves 4. Ingredients: 1 lb. (500 g) thin asparagus spears, ends trimmed 1/2 sheet frozen puff pastry (about 1/2 lb./250 g), thawed 1 ball burrata cheese (about 1/2 lb./250 g) Virgin olive oil for brushing Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup (4 fl. oz./125 ml) balsamic vinegar 2 Tbs. sugar Directions: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Have ready a large bowl of ice water. Add the asparagus to the boiling water and blanch until just crisp-tender, about 2 minutes. Drain the asparagus and drop them in the ice water to stop them from cooking. Drain the asparagus again, pat dry and set aside. Preheat an oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry into a 10-by-16-inch (25-by-40-cm) rectangle about 1/8 inch (3 mm) thick. Transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet. Prick the pastry all over with a fork. Bake until the pastry is light golden brown, about 12 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool slightly. Tear the burrata into small pieces and arrange evenly over the pastry, leaving a 1 1/2-inch (4-cm) border uncovered on all sides. Arrange the asparagus spears in rows evenly on the pastry. (Alternatively, you can arrange the asparagus spears at a diagonal to form a chevron pattern.) Brush the asparagus with olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper. Bake until the cheese is melted and the pastry is crisp and golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes. While the tart is cooking, in a small saucepan over medium heat, stir together the balsamic vinegar and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove the tart from the oven and drizzle the balsamic glaze evenly on top. Serve warm or at room temperature. Serves 8. 30

Add a little water to the pan if it the onions start to dry out. Then add honey and cook for 1 more minute. Set aside. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a 13 x 9 inch pan with butter or oil. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, vegetable oil, Panko breadcrumbs, Sriracha, 1 ½ teaspoons salt and pepper. Grate the potatoes with a hand grater or food processor and squeeze out excess moisture with towels. Add potatoes and caramelized onions to the egg mixture and mix until combined. Pour into the 9 x 13 inch pan and bake, uncovered, for 60-75 minutes until golden brown and a knife inserted comes out clean. Let cool 10 minutes before eating. Garnish with scallions if desired. Reheats well in the oven, but it doesn't freeze so great.

Brisket with Red Wine & Shallots Ingredients: 12 shallots 6 cloves of garlic 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1.5 kg brisket of beef, rolled and tied 1 whole nutmeg, for grating 1 x 400 g tin of chopped tomatoes 2 tablespoons tomato purĂŠe 250 ml red wine 2 fresh bay leaves 1 stick of cinnamon 1 small handful of black olives 1 teaspoon dried oregano a few sprigs of fresh thyme 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
Directions: Peel the shallots and garlic. Heat the oil in a pressure cooker (or heavy-based casserole). Add the beef and turn it every couple of minutes, or until it's golden on all sides. Remove and set aside. Add the whole shallots and garlic to the pan and cook for around 10 minutes, or until they start to soften and take on color. Finely grate in around a quarter if the nutmeg, then add all remaining ingredients, except the beef brisket. Half fill the tomato tin with water and tip this in too. Season well with sea salt and black pepper. Gently stir until hot and starting to thicken. Return the beef to the pan and put the lid on, making sure the valve is shut. Cook on a low heat for 1 hour 15 minutes (or 2 hours if not using a pressure cooker). Release the valve and, once the steam has stopped hissing, remove the lid. Leave the beef to rest for 10 minutes before removing. It should flake apart easily with 2 forks, though if it doesn't, it's fine to continue cooking it for a few more minutes. Stir the remaining sauce and season to taste. Break apart or carve the beef and serve with the lovely rich sauce spooned over the top.

Meringue Nests with Basil Scented Strawberry-Rhubarb Compote Ingredients: Nests: 3 large egg whites, room temperature 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar 3/4 cup sugar Compote: 1/2 lb strawberries, rinsed, hulled and quartered ½ cup of strawberries, rinsed, hulled and chopped 1/2 lb of rhubarb 2 Tablespoons of honey 1 Tablespoon of water 3-4 whole basil leaves Whipped Cream: 1/2 cup of heavy cream 2 Tablespoons powdered sugar Directions: Preheat oven to 275°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Place egg whites, vanilla and cream of tartar in the bowl of a stand mixer and beat with a whisk attachment until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar (about 1 Tablespoon at a time) and beat on high speed until stiff peaks form. Using a spoon, drop eight dollops of meringue onto prepared baking sheet. Use the back of your spoon to create a well in each ‘nest’. Nests should be around 3-4 inches wide. You can alternately transfer meringue mixture to a piping bag and pipe the nests, making sure that the bottom is a solid circle so that the filling won't leak out later. Bake the nests for 45-50 minutes or until they are totally set and dry. Leaving the oven door closed, turn off the oven and allow meringues to sit in the oven for an additional 1 hour. In the meantime, place rhubarb, 1/2 lb of the strawberries, water, basil and honey in a small sauce pan set over medium heat. Bring mixture to a gentle boil and reduce to a simmer. Allow mixture to cook, stirring occasionally, until fruit is soft and syrupy, about 15 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat and discard basil leaves. Stir in the reserved ½ cup of chopped strawberries and allow mixture to cool. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add sugar and beat until cream is thick and fluffy. Be careful not to over beat or you'll end up with butter. Top each meringue nest with several dollops of compote and whipped cream. Serve immediately. 33

The Drift By Erika Ervin
Do you ever feel yourself drifting through life? You know there is somewhere you want to go but you don’t know where it is or how you are going to get there. You are unhappy but not sure at what is making you unhappy?
I was drifting and scared to face the answers because of my previous attempts for success and many failures. Was I always going to be in this stagnant ‘drift’?
My years of dealing hormonal imbalance, confusion, and lack of direction resulted in me always asking myself:
“Is where I am right now, going to be where I am 5 years from now?”
I’m letting you in on my story because I know I’m not alone. We want to be at peace with our bodies. We want to love ourselves at any given moment. We want to have the confidence that the future will look completely different if we just put together all the pieces.
“Is this the best I’m ever going to feel?” “How much longer can I live running around always so busy?”
37
After these few minutes of silence, begin to write. Don’t think, just write. It’s a journaling technique that allows you to learn so much about your emotions and ambitions.
I’ve found that these three pieces of our ‘life’ puzzle changed my view of myself. This change allowed me to know how I fully help and positively impact lives around me. The world around me changed and I’m confident that once you find this, you too will live a life with purpose.
3. Make a list of all attachments. I define an attachment as something I am co-dependent on. Not love or acceptance which is selfless. It’s an uncontrolled compulsion. For example… a person, an object even a feeling.
Once you make these changes you will organically manifest...
More time More happiness More abundance in my personal and professional life More peace And even more Money!
START NOW: Write down, who or what you are most attached to. Is it an object (money), an attitude (pride or Jealousy) or a behavior? Maybe a little of all four of these? Simply being aware of these attachments is the first step in truly letting go and finding the peace you seek.
1. I was confident that what I was putting into my body was good for me. I’ve tried many different types of nutrition in order to find the one that works best for me. Here’s the kicker, it changes from time to time. I don’t eat the same way every single day. I think the most exciting thing about even the smallest change to our nutrition and physical activity is the energy you gain. More energy has allowed my quality of productivity to increase which then gave me more TIME!
We are all on a path. Sometimes we know there is somewhere we want to be, goals we want to meet, and ambitions that can be realized, but sometimes we don’t know what they are or how to get there. Transformation starts with one thing… a decision to seek and accept help.
START NOW: Be mindful of going to the pantry when you are hungry. Have pre-made salads and healthy dishes in the refrigerator to grab when it’s time to eat. Also, substitute anything from a box with fresh veggies.
As you’re begin to transform your good days will outweigh the bad ones and the bad ones won’t be as bad. The bad days will also be much easier to work through.
2. Make a vow to slow down. I stopped doing so much and stopped trying so hard. What I found is that making time for stillness in my life, allowed me to get back to who I am, what I want, and what I can give. It’s been liberating.
In my weekly emails, I address topics such as this. Burning questions on mindset, yoga, meditation and nutrition. If you would like to be a part of this community, please visit my website and jump on my mailing list! www.yourfitnessgirl.com Erika Ervin, Founder: The Virtual 5 Week Yoga and Fitness Retreat.
START NOW: Commit 5 to 10 minutes of stillness every day with minimal distractions.

Herbal-Prescription Interactions By Dr. Donna S Barsky, D Ph., R Ph., Texas Star Pharmacy
People are buying herbal remedies for everything from migraines to memory preservation to depression. Where once you had to see an herbalist or naturopath to get the daily dose of herbs for what ails you, herbal products are now widely available in drugstores and health food stores, making the ability to self-medicate greater than ever. But with opportunity comes a warning: mixing herbal remedies and prescription drugs could be harmful to your health. Just like drug-drug and drug-food interactions, herb-drug interactions are very common. Some herbal medicines may cancel the effect of a prescription drug, while others may reduce or exaggerate it.
Many, fail to mention to their physician or pharmacist that they are taking an herbal medication and this can create problems with their prescription medication routine. Some of the more common products used and their effects follow. Dong Quai is taken for menopausal symptom control. Do not mix Dong Quai with warfarin (anticoagulants), St John’s Wort and some antibiotics such as sulfonamides, quinolones. Echinacea is mostly taken as an immune boost to prevent cold and flu. Do not mix Echinacea with some heart medications, antifungal medications, HIV medications and anti-anxiety medications.
39
Ephedra is a powerful decongestant that contains ephedrine, which can open bronchial passages. It is controversial because it’s a powerful stimulant that can raise blood pressure, cause insomnia and high blood pressure. Do not mix with heart medications or if you are being treated for high blood pressure, glaucoma or thyroid problems.
Hawthorn is claimed to be effective in helping reduce angina attacks by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Should not be taken with digoxin, a heart medication. The mix may lower heart rate too much. Kava is used to treat anxiety. It is also used to relieve insomnia and nervousness. Do not take Kava if you have a history of liver problems. Also, do not mix with antidepressants, sedatives, and do not mix Kava with alcohol.
Feverfew is taken to reduce the severity of migraines. Do not take with other migraine medications, as, it may raise heart rate and blood pressure. Feverfew has the potential to react with warfarin anti-coagulants, increasing the thinning of blood.
Licorice is used to treat coughs, colds and peptic ulcers. High doses can lead to increased blood pressure, water retention and potassium loss. Do not use with diuretics or digoxin because it could lead to further loss of potassium, essential for heart function.
Ginkgo increases blood flow and circulation throughout the body, can also help improve memory. May interact with anti-coagulant medications such as aspirin, coumadin, heparin and warfarin, causing the blood to thin too much, and provoke a serious bleeding disorder. A recent report in the New England Journal of Medicine describes a case of a man who’d been taking aspirin to prevent a heart attack and had spontaneous bleeding into the eye from the iris within a week of taking a daily dose of ginkgo.
St John’s wort is a natural anti-depressant for mild to moderate depression. Do not take with other anti-depressants, HIV medications, oral contraceptives, some heart/blood thinning medications and Tamoxifen (a cancer drug). Valerian is a mild sedative with hypnotic effects, used to promote sleep, should not be taken with alcohol or Valium.
Garlic is thought to help lower cholesterol and prevent the formation of blood clots that could lead to heart attacks. Garlic capsules may increase blood thinning if you are already on anti-coagulants. Do not take with diabetes medication because it may cause a decrease in blood sugars.
If your physician does not know about interactions with your medications, ask your pharmacist. Bookstores also have entire shelves devoted to herbalism these days, and many outline possible drug interactions. Since herb drug interactions aren’t predictable, and are possible, especially if you’re taking a range of prescriptions and herbal remedies, it’s best to play it safe and study the herbal medicine before adding it to your pillbox.
Ginseng is used to help reduce stress, boost energy and improve stamina, and may also help lower cholesterol. Can cause nervousness and excitation, and overuse can lead to headaches, insomnia and heart palpitations. Can increase blood pressure. Should not be used if you are taking prescriptions for high blood pressure or coumadin.

ADAPTIVE BRAS … A FRESH NEW FORM OF COMFORT By Maria Valencia For women who are recovering from a stroke, suffer from arthritis, diabetes, dexterity movement, or have gone through a surgical procedure that has left them with limited mobility of their arms and hands, an adaptive bra is something to consider. An adaptive bra can make a positive difference in women’s selfesteem and give them back the ability to dress themselves as they go through their recovery. What exactly is an Adaptive Bra? An adaptive bra is typically a front-closure style that makes dressing easier by having large hooks, a zipper, snaps or Velcro® closures, and allows women to dress themselves without too much help from a caregiver (depending on the severity of their mobility challenge). What to consider when shopping for an Adaptive Bra: Is the bra easy to put on? Does is offer all-day comfort? Do the straps stay in place? Does it give enough coverage or does the cup runneth over? Are the fabrics & elastics comfortable on your skin? Is the bra machine washable? For everyone, but especially for well-endowed women, comfort is important. It is imperative for large busted women to have a well-fitting bra to avoid skin-to-skin contact under the bust which can result in rashes and skin breakouts that are painful and difficult to clear up. A comfortable bra for daily use is the best way to keep skin healthy. An Adaptive Bra is the perfect solution for both support and all day comfort. And the best news is that they are now available online and in stores. Maria E. Valencia, Fresh Comfort, Inc., Founder and President, offers FREE bra fitting sessions in the DFW area for a group of 4-6 women. Grab a few friends, call 214-705-0408 for an appointment and finally get the best fit your breasts deserve.

in the know Kathryn E. White, M.D. Dr. White has lived in Texas for more than 30 years, though she is a native of Marietta, Georgia. She attended college at Houston Baptist University and medical school at University of Texas – Houston; completing her internship and residency at University of Texas Southwestern-Parkland Memorial Hospital which is one of the busiest programs in the United States. She is Board Certified and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She was one of the first physicians to affiliate with the premier hospital, Baylor Medical Center in Frisco, as she relocated recognizing the need in this growing community. She now focuses on gynecology and aesthetic medicine. Dr. White is married with two children. She supports several charities regarding women’s health and children’s groups. She enjoys music, travel, water skiing and agility events with her dog, Jolie. She also enjoys all things French and is learning to speak the language.
When did you know, you wanted to be a physician? I knew I wanted to be either a lawyer or physician coming out of high school. However, I quickly learned after I went to work part-time for a law firm during college that I did not like that as a potential career. Math and science were subjects I liked, so felt the best match for me was medical school. What made you chose gynecology/women's health? I never thought I would choose Ob/Gyn when I entered medical school. It was during my clinical rotations in my third year of medical school when I did Medicine first, followed by General Surgery. I really enjoyed operating and at first thought I might go that route, But next came Ob/Gyn and it was a great mix of primary care and surgery, so it allowed me to enjoy both aspects. Delivering babies was of course also very exciting and gratifying.

KATHRYN E. WHITE, M.D. Our mission is to provide quality healthcare to women of all ages in a warm and comfortable environment. We also strive to help women age in as healthy a manner as possible with the goal of maintaining their quality of life. The gynecology side of the practice is dedicated strictly to women’s health including handling the effects of aging, hormone imbalance, and physician-assisted weight loss. The Azure Med Spa, the second half of the practice, is recognized not only for its passion for revealing every woman’s beauty, but for its effective medical approaches. the latest techniques in body sculpting, skin care, weight loss and general health services.
What is the most important tip you would give to women of any age as to their health? There are so many important things that go into good health but one of the most important is to start taking care of yourself at a young age. Practice good dietary and exercise habits early in life and also realize the importance of preventative care and having regular annual exams. It is much easier to prevent illness than it is to try and reverse it. Sometimes that isn't possible but if detected early, it is much easier to take care of with a more favorable outcome.

in the know Isabell Rossignol Looks can be deceiving! She speaks eloquently but she knows how to stomp through the mud and the alligators, without smudging her high heels. According to Isabell, “Being a publicist is not an easy endeavor. It takes dogged determination and fortitude to reach the important decision makers and it requires finesse in gaining the apple at the end of the rope! Intricate and refined delicacy are necessary when you are trying to accomplish public relations exposure. You have to use your cowboy boots in a subtle and gentle manner.” Did you plan for a career as a publicist? And if not, how did you find your way into PR? No, I did not set out after a career as a publicist. It happened naturally. At a very young age creative thoughts would come into my mind on how to promote a person, product or company. Owning my own company led me into the PR world and I always gravitated to it. I know my business better than anyone else, so why do I need a publicist? Chances are you probably need one if you are asking the question. Why? Because by not knowing the rules of the game or having valuable contacts in place, there are too many angles, stories, and opportunities you might miss. I ask them back, “Would you ask someone to run your business while you take a vacation, if they knew nothing about it?” Same principal! Hire an expert for solid results. Tell us something about you that most people do not know. I have traveled extensively and in fact just returned from a quick trip to Paris and Rome. If you do not encounter new experiences from other places, people, cultures, you may find you have become very rigid in your thinking, eating, and living. As a publicist, by having the opportunity to see how other people live, work, and play, you open your mind to new creativity and see things in a new light, both stimulating and educational. For me this is reflected in the stories I weave, giving my clients a broader base for market appeal and share. I would not have this if it were not for personal exploration and growth.

When does a business need a press release and what really is the purpose of a press release? It is important to understand the meaning/value of a press release which is a statement of information supplied to reporters. It is an official announcement or account of a news story that is specially prepared and issued to newspapers and other news media for them to make known to the public. But it is not just the story, you must spin the story of the story; a written or recorded communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of announcing something ostensibly newsworthy and you must make it so appealing that the press does not want to miss sharing this story!

in the know Becca Menig “I believe each day gives us something; a few minutes of afternoon light casting intricate shadows on a dining room wall, or a delicious Pesto because the basil got knee-high. Maybe some things broke my heart... I write about them all. My name is Becca. I live in Dallas but I left my heart in Florence, Italy. I'd like to thank you for reading. Those are the words by this stunning author, blogger, cook (she does not call herself a chef, though her culinary talents could land her in any 5-star restaurant) are on her blog site, from3906.blogspot.com. More impressive is her knowledge of food in its simple natural flavorful state and how to use it in refreshing dishes. At what age were you when you recognized you had a love of food and cooking? I loved food for as long as I can remember. Both grandparents had tiny backyard gardens, and the bounty from those small spaces was featured on their dining tables: tomatoes, squashes, and okra were my favorites but there were radishes, green beans, cucumbers, and probably much more. I was well into adulthood when I realized just how much I loved cooking. Did you grow up around the kitchen learning to cook or did you take classes or are you selftaught? How does somebody start to learn more about food, how to prepare it, how to pair it? I grew up eating good and real food. I would credit my maternal grandmother, Ganny, for subliminally transferring her love of cooking to me. When I was about seven years old, she made what I'm sure were amazing cream puffs but I didn't like them, preferring the sugar-laden commercial bakery's cream horns. Somehow though, those pastries stayed with me until I had experienced food and had the palate to appreciate what she had created. To those who want to expand their knowledge and appreciation of food, they should do it all: eat a variety, read books, talk to cooks and chefs, watch videos or television, travel, get in the kitchen and practice, practice, practice. What is the best meal you've ever had and where did you have it? Why was it the best ever? I have just completed a memoir which I hope to publish, and in it, I answer this very question in more detail. The meal would actually be reduced to a single first bite of pasta: Conchiglie ai Quattro Formaggi which is a shell pasta tossed with four cheeses. That bite sent my husband and me on a path; decades of learning about regional Italian food, in Italy and in our own kitchen.

The word ‘chef’ is French for ‘chief,’ meaning a leader or person in charge. We are all cooks, every one of us!
Visit Different Grocers ~ Learn at Your Own Speed ~ Review Chef Techniques ~ Read Cookbooks Your senses grow as you experiment with fresh vibrant ingredients. And as you become more familiar with foods and their unique tastes, the ability to analyze them for pairings, explain what products might be delicious together, what's missing and could be added for baked in nutrition without sacrificing bold flavors becomes natural to you as a cook. How do I learn more about foods? I think it is important in order to start being a healthier cook? It seems like everything has sauces or gravy or cheese. I don't want to give up things I truly enjoy, but at the same time I want to make better choices. My approach is, I guess, one of moderation and being true to my lifestyle. I gave up meat and poultry thirty years ago, but I know I could never be a happy vegan. I try hard to eat real food and lots of vegetables. (Would Ganny eat this thing in box, full of ingredients I can't pronounce?) I won't eat anything with partially hydrogenated oil. I buy pasture-raised eggs. I make my own stock and soups. I avoid sugar. These are my choices and ones that are manageable for me. By cooking yourself, you can better control exactly what you are eating. Yes, I love now and then to cook a bowl of linguine with zucchini coated in a lemon cream sauce or fry a platter of shrimp. I just don't do it too often. I also know that life is short.

As a business consultant bridging the gap between Latina and Anglo business owners, what is the one major piece of advice you would give an entrepreneur wanting to serve these markets? The most important thing is to understand the different culture you want to reach, you must genuinely strive to learn as much as you can about this culture and earn people’s trust. Anybody who tries to just sell without forming a deeper connection first will not succeed. Â

Learning to seize your own pleasure and please your love means being free of guilt, fear and past hurts. Letting go of the beliefs and experiences that stifle your sexual expression and intimacy is key in laying the foundation for your relationship. Dr. Kat is a certified intimacy expert, author and speaker and TEDX Speaker.
What is an intimacy expert? I like to call myself an Intimalogist or intimacy expert and what we do is help couples understand intimacy and all its intricacies. There is a lot of confusion between intimacy and sex. They are not the same thing. Sex lasts about 7 minutes on average. What are you doing with the rest of your time to develop a deep intimate connection with your lover? Intimacy is trust, care, respect, affection, nurturing, support and so much more. It’s the foundation that you build your house of love on. How did you find this passion to follow? I have always felt that my life’s work is to help people to expand their capacity to love and be loved. As I shared in my Ted talk, I am a survivor of child molestation and with no help for what I was going through the trauma, and with no preparation for relationships, love and sex, I went on to one failed relationship after another. I decided to get help and then educate myself and use my life experience to help others. My passion pulses through my work. What books have you written? My latest book, ABCs of Intimacy is a quick read and I suggest it as a tool for couples to read together and discuss what each term means to them so there can unveil differences and understanding in perspectives and in how we love individually. My husband is loving and caring and in public demonstrative of such. Me, not so much. How do I balance this difference? Our sex life is good, we're very compatible and happy I'm just not someone who is comfortable with displays of affection in public places. And I'm not talking lewd, more kissing, hugging, wrapping himself around me. How do I start the conversation without hurting his feelings? First let me say that you simply are not a kinesthetic (touchy feely) lover and there is nothing wrong in that. Affection or displays of affection are given and received at different levels. Affection is also a component of intimacy which begins at infancy. If the patterns of affection have not been set in you, it can feel unnatural or uncomfortable. For example: ever hugged someone and they stiffen up? Well, it may be because they are not used to the feeling of being hugged on a regular basis. Starting the conversation will begin with you looking into your past and determining what is at the core of your discomfort. When you can figure out why, then you can begin to address positive change. Next, begin by resetting your patterns of affection. Start with daily affection - Holding hands, caressing, hugs, and kisses. They don’t have to be long and drawn out, but simply sharing affection and creating a new normalcy. If you are in your head, then who cares what others are thinking about you showing your love for another. I applaud your reaching out for answers in acknowledging your husband’s way of expressing his love for you. The way we express love is usually the way we desire to receive it. So, if you love him, give him love in the way he desires it and help him give love to you the way you desire it in return. www.drkatsmith.com
