MODULE1 How To Draw A Croissant

3

Photographing : This page capture the photoograph of the plan and two elevation views of my croissant . This was not a difficult part but was timeconsuming and require students’ patient . I learnt how to layout and set the images to get a better clean background and change the lighting to provide better visual effect .

4

Draw the crossaint : During this stage i learnt the way of using the tracing paper to draw our unique crossaint and produce and magically manifest the depth through differnt pencils ( 6B , 2b) and fineliners . For the plan view i got some idea of utlising the lines but it did not produce a ultimate overall effect . Throughout the process as well as the failure , i learnt hatching technique and the vision of the overall image which may help me in the future practises .

5

Three different section cuts of the crossaint , through the process of producing the section drawings , i learnt the design idea from the exterior to the interior appearance .

6

The axonometric drawing of the half of the crossaint based on the gridlines with the crossaint’s plan view . Those grids are based on the 3 sections of the crossaint which students are requied to scan during the earlier stages . The drawings on this page require the students to not soley have the patient but also the ability of the imagination for space .

7

In this module, we learnt to measure a croissant and construct orthographic projection drawings by hand. During the process, drawing equipment such as fine liner and a set of pencil are used to explore the technique of hatching and shading. The whole representing process required the materials such as fine line pens for the outline , 2-6B pencils for the shadings , ruler and T-square for measurement , tracing paper as well as the masking tap to trace the croissant’s shape as well as the textures . During the module process , i found the most challenging stuff is the axonometric drawing as we have to imagine most of the shadows and connect different parts together , however it really helped me to understand the form of solid and the way of thinking in a space .

Flatness vs. Projection

MODULE2 Flatness vs. Projection

9

In the Module 2 assignment , we are required to create a projected world by ourselves based on the original given elevation images from the Mario world . This page showing the final line drawing with the fundamental idea of creating several separated layers to show the Mario world in a clearer and more creative way . The bottom circles displaying five most significant elements composingth final world .

Given that the Mario elevations are based underground, my intention was to portray a separated level Mario city that was gradually being developed into a liveable space powered by the several energy cubes with some artificial elements integrated into the natural landscape. Within my Mario world, I followed the name of this subject: foundation of design representation which I have represented the blocks and utilise the solid forms to demonstrate my desired structure where the remainders can rest on. For the colour scheme, kept the main in three primary colours grey, brown, yellow and further utilise blue and green for some part of the top plane and the pipes. By using these limited colour palette it allowed myself for a larger amount manipulation of reordering and redefining shapes. During the design process, I decided to exclude any backgrounds because I wanted to show the contrast between the closed and open space , Openness and density are the two most important concepts that I desired to include in my Mario world, as a result, I created 3 separated levels to clearly separate the space and provide myself the spatial context to present the complexity . In this sense, adding background would hinder me from achieving my goal.

M3 MODULE3 Patternvs. vs.Surface Surface Pattern

15

This page contains the two main experimental model and showing the process to reach the final M3 model (on the right side ) . These three different variations utlised differnt comand in order to experiment and test the different visual effect . Each of them were made with differnt grid points due to the different placement of the attract point / curve with the same three main elements ( differnt types of the pyramids model ) shown at the bottom .

16

17

18

The overall final model of my Rhino variation , each separate pyramids were made with paper and stick them together separately ( totally 100 times )in order to form the final piece . The idea of the arrown symbol are stronly shown by the changing of pyramids as well as the terain itself . By changing the pyramids of small blocksto achieve the visual effect of pointing a direction .

19

For the module 3 pattern vs surface we aim to control and manipulate the model based on a given surface utilising panelling tools in Rhino 6 . During this module , the digital method plays a significant role in creating forms and patterns on the terrain surface and ultimately producing a physical model based on the digital one . For the first stage - the digital model ,it have been extremely challenging for me . The process of opening a new field - attending workshop , asking questions , learning from the previous mistakes and gradually develop my skills , all help me to create the basic model and make some further development and interesting attempts during the latter stage . According to the design of my surface , i got inspiration from the pattern of the ‘’ arrow ‘’ which is a common symbol combined by three separate lines that meet at one sole vertex . The meaning of the ‘’ arrow’’ is also embodied in my model which all the triangular modules seem to flowing to one direction that is the arrowhead that normally point to the destination .

Marozia Story Interpretations

22

Progress from blank isometric to the final work with notations : For the old quad i have left 6 groups of pipes and vaults and deleted two groups of it in order to fit my story and aviod overlapping with the perspective images . For the floor of the old quad , i explored it in a graduating manner which the further the floor are close to the swallow god the higher and more exploed it is , this disply the social hierarchy and the huge difference in treatment between the civilian and the god . In order to place the object and characters in a graduatingmanner like a stair , i also made the floor change in height depending on their position and further moved the vaults to demonstrate the floor height and give a clearly view for the audeince to sense the gap . The three levels due to the floor can be easily identified by the audience in which the lower space ( on the very left)under the lowest vault are for the slaves , soldiers as well as the peasants , the second floor in the middle is for officials and scribes and the highest level are prepared for phararoh and the worship towards Egyptian god and swallow god . As audience can see , there are no direct connection between the owest level with any of the other two , indicating the insurmountable gap between the lowest class to the higher , whereas the stair between the second level to the highest demonstrating the need for the higher class to communicate with the god which  reflected the Egyptian religion as well as the social context .

23

Add notations : The notations on the hidden city Marozia contains the direction , atmosphere , time , gaze as well as the glance . Specifically , the transference/direction are placed in order to set the general direction on the right of the city showing all the characters moving towards the altar for the swallow god . Moreover , for the weight/atmosphere , those lines notates and represents the populations center which means the populous crowd in the Marozia city . In addition to this , the time/temporal threshold is exhibited in curved directions in order to represent the change according to different time period and the development from the original rat city into the combination with the swallow as the ultimate Marozia . The temporal threshold lines in the city also clearly separate the 3 social levels into the peasants , officialls and the god .The gaze with two direction showing the level 3 as the upper class where the worship to god and pharaoh were taken place and the other direction represent the strong difference and social hierarchy within during the third dynasty even the city has been separated from the ancient Egyptian kingdom . The glance inside the city have been placed to notate the relationship between characters and displaying the huge gap between different social classes during the ancient Egyptian period .

24

25

26

PERSPECTIVE 01 : The perspective one capture the view of the second level as the ‘‘ worship class ‘‘ that contains the pharaoh , Egyptian god as well as the swallow god . The perspective scene take place inside the Sahara desert which is interpreted through the background . In the perspective one i have shown many of the Egyptian god for instance yhe Egyptian god of the dead - Anubis , the sun god Horus as wel as the god of the swallow to to show the city’s appreciation and respect for rescuing their city . In oder to emphasis the significance of the swallow god , a altar was built in whcih the social hierarchy and classes are decided depending on the distance to the altar . According to the interpretation of the Marozia story , the swallow god saved the city from the fate of destruction which won a place within the the upper class and enjoy the treatment and worship from the lower classes . For my textures , i have used multiple textures within my scene contains the stone floor originally from the passages in the pyramid , the wall texture from the mural in the burial chamber of the Khufu pyramid and also the desert scene taht is suitable for my desired sun direction which can be helpful to create a sense of realism . It is also worth mentioning that for the vault part i intentionally change the direction of the pinnate textures to show the curve and angle then further utlised the sponge tool to create brightness around the fire .For the composition , the background of the scenen are extremely significance as it is set in the same sun direction with it’s shadow totally suit and combine with the city in order to give the third dimention and create a sense of realism .

27

28

PERSPECTIVE 02 : In the perspective two , the darkness inside the city creates a strong contrast to the light outside especially the bright side on the left side mainly display on the column and a character standing next to the column . This contrast not only associate with the light but also demonstrate the different height of the floor in order to indicate the gap and social hierarchy within the city . Characters in the upper class contains the Anubis holding Pharaoh’s coffinand Horus , representing the worship class . The second level mainly contains the civilians and officials and the lower class for slaves and peasants . This view for this perspective was intentionally chose to demonstrate the huge gap between social status and imply the vast different treatment depending on people’s social class . According to the textures and techniques , i utlises three different texture for different levels depending on the status . The higher the floor are , the more expensive those original stones are , this clearly separate the levels not only but height but also by the distinguished textures on the floor . For the column in the scene , i add texture from the mural of the Khafre pyramid from the Giza pyramid complex which place the audience in the feeling of the Egyptian culture and create a sense of substitution .

29

During my module 4 process , when i set my perspective views , i aims to find the best way in capturing the old quad view as well as the characters that i included within the scene and bring my perspective narration to a higher level . For my first perspective my primary focus was to set the symmetrical view to set the center of the background image and the old quad at the same point , however , this will not allow my self to display the strong contrast between the brightness between inside and outside which also result in some overlapping between my characters . The symmetrical view also doesn’t suit and apply my perspective two as a simply straight will is not able to indicate my different levels which will be a waste for the change i applied to the old quad . As a result both of the angle for my two perspective view were shifted slightly to fix those problem which provide my self some better view and more space to develop during the photo shop stage . ne of the highlight for my perspective two is the placement of the fire and my use of the sponge tool . After set the fire on the corner between O columns and vault , i found the whole image was too dark which displayed a lack of bright light . As a result i decided to add some more light from the fire which i found the sponge tool under the burn tool section was helpful and was able to satisfy my desire .Those extra light further providing a strong light contrast and was able to attract audiences’ attention to those bright part then extend to the contrasted dark side .

30

REFLECTION The image has to stand for that which is not there . It has to present it and therefore the image has to be its re-presentation - Benjamin , 2000 .

31

REFLECTION According to the four modules we worked on from the crossiant drawing to the Mario world , from model making all the way to the old quad design , I learnt the idea of re-presentation . When i was working on my first module the crossiant sketching , i initially tried to draw my crossaint as real as possible which was not the required result of this subject , my drawings became a re-production rather the required re-presentation . As a result my first module did not performed a unique appearance or result in comparison to my other modules . As soon as i realized this , i began to pay more attention on the representation and idea . The module 2 Mario world of making the 2 dimentaional object into 3 dimentaional and further developing my idea of representing objects from different angle . For the module 3’s model making , this is the most successful module i create within this semester , improving my Rhino skills and taught me how to rebuild the surface by changing the shape and height of each samll pyramids . The ultimate post on Scott ‘s instagram is the greatest reward for my effort . For the last module that focus on the development of the old quad model taught us to think deeply and come out with our unique interpretations . This module help me to develop my imagination and aim to explore deeper for my future works .

32

REFLECTION Throughout the study of Foundations of Design : Representation , i learnt the tangible skiills of utlising several softwares for instance the photoshop , illustrator , rhinio and also got the intangible knowlege which assist myself to understand the notion of surface, elevation , projection as well as the spatial context in the architectural area . All those knowledge will be helpful and meaningful for my future studies and even my entire life . One of the most significant thing i learnt from this subject is the notion of representation and allow my self to understand the way of representing objects into a design work . Throughout the study , i understanded that i still have to improve my thingking method , the way i got inspiration , the way i convey my idea and the way i represent my concepts .
