OVERVIEW OF SOUTH MUMBAI The city Mumbai, known as Bombay until 1995, is a great port city, situated on the west coast of the Indian peninsula. PINNACLE SPOTS OF SOUTH MUMBAI NARIMAN POINT Esteemed to be the country's first business district Nariman Point is situated on the part of South Mumbai that is reclaimed by the sea. Named after Khursheed Framji Nariman, this place was initially a part of the Arabian Sea. Situated on the extreme southern tip of Marine Drive, Nariman Point serves as the headquarters of some of the most premiere business establishments in the country.
COLABA Originally known as Candil, Colaba is known as the gateway of Mumbai. Popular as a famous tourist spot Colaba shelters the Gateway of India, the historical Taj Mahal Hotel and a number of famous shopping malls. One of the most congested areas in South Mumbai, Colaba reminds of the Old Bombay Cantonment. DADAR Popular as one of the most crowded railway stations in Mumbai, Dadar is a small locality in South Mumbai. Divided into East and West by the railway lines Dadar was earlier a part of Bombay and Baroda Railroad. Dadar is home to the famous Shivaji Park, Mayor's Bungalow and the Plaza movie theatre. WORLI Extending from Haji Ali to Prabhadevi Worli was once famous for its various mills. Today a well-planned corporate location Worli is one of the most commercialized areas of South Mumbai. FORT AREA One of the most happening locations in South Mumbai, Fort area is located in the northern part of the city and is well connected by all modes of transportation. One of the most frequented localities by the cinema lovers, Fort Area offers some of the finest theatres in Mumbai. Besides, there is also the popular film studio, Filmstan. Film City, the shooting hub of the Indian film industry is situated in Goregaon which is just minutes away.
MALABAR HILL Malabar Hill, a hillock in southern Mumbai, India is an upmarket VVIP residential area which has the Government Guest House Sahaydri, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra’s Bungalow, official residences of VIP state officials, famous Hanging Gardens, Jain Temple & Banganga Tank. INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE ISLAND CITY Existing Infrastructure 1. Mumbai Eastern Freeway The Eastern Freeway connecting South Mumbai with Eastern suburbs has reduced the travel time drastically. Areas like Chembur, Sewri, Wadala and Ghatkopar are the most benefitted being the entry and exit points. With all the sections of the Eastern Freeway opened for traffic, motorist from South Mumbai bound for Ghatkopar are able to save more than 45 minutes of driving time.
2. Bandra-Worli Sea Link The Bandra–Worli Sea Link, officially called Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, is a cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete-steel viaducts on either side that links Bandra in the Western Suburbs of Mumbai with Worli in South Mumbai. The bridge is a part of the proposed Western Freeway that will link the Western Suburbs to Nariman Point in Mumbai's main business district. The sealink reduces travel time between Bandra and Worli during peak hours from 60–90 minutes to 20–30 minutes.
3. Eastern Express Highway Eastern Express Highway serves as a link to the National Highway 3. The expressway has a total of 6 lanes and it connects to all the suburbs of North Mumbai with South Mumbai. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is the starting point of the expressway and continues up to Thane.

UPCOMING INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE ISLAND CITY Proposed Infrastructure Projects 1. Mumbai Trans Harbour Link The proposed Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) will facilitate decongestion in Mumbai by improving connectivity between Island city and main land (Navi Mumbai). The project includes a 22.5 km long 6-lane bridge connecting Sewri on the island city to Nhava-Sheva. This Link will facilitate smooth and faster communication in Mumbai and Main Land (Navi Mumbai).
2. Proposed Worli - Sewri elevated road The planned Sewri-Worli elevated 4.25-km long Connector road is aimed at easing the perennial commuting problems of the city. This will ensure a signal-free ride from Sewri right to the western suburb of Bandra. The connectivity will be strengthened further once the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority links the Worli-Sewri road to the existing Eastern Freeway and the proposed Sewri-Nhava Sheva Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.
3. Proposed Metro rail Phase III (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) The proposed phase - 3 of the Mumbai Metro, also referred to as the ColabaBandra-SEEPZ line, is a part of the metro system for the city of Mumbai. When completed, the 33.5-km long line will be the first underground metro line in Mumbai. The metro line will connect Cuffe Parade business district in the extreme south of the city to SEEPZ in the north-central region of Mumbai. Line 3 is expected to reduce road congestion, besides reducing the load on the Western Line between Bandra and Churchgate.
4. Proposed monorail phase 2 The proposed Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle Monorail will significantly reduce the 75 minutes road journey to 30 Minutes. The phase 2 Monorail stretches in the form of commuting comfort, reduced vehicular congestion on roads, and better access to other modes of transport. Additionally, Monorail will give a push to the development of its surrounding areas such as Wadala, Mysore Colony, Bharat Petroleum, etc.

UPCOMING INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE ISLAND CITY Proposed Infrastructure Projects 5. Coastal Freeway Project The Coastal Freeway is a proposed alternative to the Western Freeway. The proposed 35.6 km road will begin in Nariman Point near Manora (MLA Hostel), with entry and exit points at Jagannath Bhosale Marg, and will move along Marine Drive and lead into a tunnel that will go under Malabar Hill and exit on the other side of Priyadarshini Park. This stretch is proposed to be built on reclaimed portions up to Haji Ali, and then to Lala Lajpatrai Road in Worli. The coastal freeway will then be connected to the Worli arm of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link by a bridge. On the Bandra side, the coastal road skirting the fort will connect the coastal freeway up to Chimbai village, where a bridge is proposed. A road by reclamation of mangroves, further north, or a road on stilts, and an elevated road between Oshiwara and Malad is also proposed. The coastal freeway will have 18 entry and exit points along its route.
6. Inland Passenger water transport Project (IPWT) Inland Passenger water transport Project (IPWT) aims to provide connectivity between south Mumbai’s busy commercial hub and the suburbs through ferries. It is seen as a possible cheaper alternative to coastal heavy sea links and coastal roads, Under the plan the water transport will be started from Nariman Point to Borivili on the western coast and Ferry Wharf to Nerul on the eastern coast.
