»After a pile of 7”s, cassettes and EPs, Pure X from Austin, Texas now release their debut album Pleasure. This trio creates mellow soundscapes with dry beats as a background for singer Nate Grace’s (often unintelligible) crooning. His guitar drones, complemented with deep bass lines, leads you to places where few bands ever dared to go. Pleasure was recorded live and without overdubs and is already being called album of the year by Stereogum.

« introduction » Word from the mayor
Welcome
Utrecht - home of outstanding festivals. Some with traditions of decades, having become - in their sheer variety - part of the city's blood- stream worthy to power the ambition to be declared European Capital of Culture in 2018! Some are younger, amongst them Le Guess Who?, which we are hosting for the fifth time now. With the shining of its urbane, cosmopolitan light, this music festival reflects the intimacy of our old city's youthful soul in the darkest time of the year.
We are very excited to have you - and all the artists - as part of this years Le Guess Who? festival. This year is our 5th anniversary and we are extremely looking forward to it. Of course we could list up a lot of artists who we recommend you to see. But all of them are being de- scribed in the next couple of pages, on which you can find all the impor- tant programme info, as well as a special editorial section put together by our friends over at Subbacultcha!. So take a look and be inspired.
Whether artist or visitor, wherever from, I welcome you heartily to Utrecht, wishing you a most exciting Le Guess Who? 2011
Still we would like to highlight a couple of artists. Simply because we are super excited that they are part of this year’s Le Guess Who? festival. Panda Bear, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Bill Callahan and Low as they are responsible for having recorded a few of our favourite albums of all time. Also, there are a lot of new bands to discover: Japanese girl-trio Nisennenmondai is something not to be missed! Suuns, John Maus, Group Inerane, Zomby, Gang Gang Dance, IceAge, Shabazz Palaces and many many more….
A. Wolfsen Mayor of the city of Utrecht
A four day long experience is waiting for you. Enjoy, explore and most of all: have fun! Thank you! Bob van Heur & Johan Gijsen Le Guess Who? 2011 Le Guess Who? 5 2011

CLUB 3VOOR12/UTRECHT: HOLLANDSE NIEUWE (NL) Indierock
(CAN) Indiepop · Electronic · Experimental
»There's more than enough dull music in The Netherlands, according to Jorn Mathijssen and Julia Hendriks aka April from Utrecht. They rose up against the musical tradition and do so with driving gazy indie rock, stimulating lyrics, beautiful vocals and atmos- pheric productions. It all started in a (soon to be demolished) flat in Overvecht and now the duo will play at Le Guess Who? 2011.
»Braids, a group of talented young musicians, was nominated for this years Polaris Music Price. Their debut album combines shoegaze, artrock en Beach House-y dreampop. Two elegant fairies and two skinny über nerds know their way around polyphonic vocals. It’s the core of their drawn-out songs build upon jazzy drums and trans- verse electronics. Despite the tricky phasers and drones, Braids is actually very danceable and uplifting.
(BFA) Hip-Hop · African
(US) Chillwave · Electronic · Lo-fi
»Hip-hop from Burkina Faso. Art Melody was for almost ten years long part of the group IBM (Ideal Black Mouvement) to go solo later in his career. Raw French (and in Mooré, Dioula) raps over heavy beats with loads of energy and wicked political diction, but also with room for introspection. With repetitive, minimalist and futur- istic beats Art Melody combines West African music with hip-hop influences. The last record Zound Zandé is inspired by the militant anti- imperialist Thomas Sankara, also sampled on two tracks.
Le Guess Who? 13 2011
»No, Com Truise is not the Scientology adaptation of a famous Hollywood actor. The productions of Seth Haley do sound alienesque though. From slow-dragging angular synth anthems to electro funk. Think of a synth-wave interpretation of Cocteau Twins or a lo-fi approach to Kraftwerk anno 2011. Com Truise sounds like a distant neighbor of John Maus or Ariel Pink’s electronic tracks. He's made remixes for Daft Punk, Twin Shadow, Neon Indian and this year he released his album Galactic Melt. Besides Com Truise, Haley also operates under pseu- donyms like Airliner, SYSTM and Sarin Sunday.

CLUB 3VOOR12/UTRECHT: HOLLANDSE NIEUWE (NL) Dreampop · Garage
»Cosmo V or Cosmo the Fifth is the stage name of Cosmo Luhulima, a student from Utrecht. Her debut EP V is a typical homemade record. The album consists of four very exciting songs. From garage rock to dream pop with a strong voice. The lyrics have a distinctive melancholic character, which she herself blames on her outsider role as Moluccan in her hometown Leerdam. There are already applications for shows coming from Chile and Morocco, while she just started rehearsing with her freshly formed band. Luhulima will soon leave Utrecht for Berlin to record her debut album.
(NL) Underground pop
»As a resident DJ of Klub Radar at Tivoli De Helling, DJ Quasimodo plays electro, danceable indie and the occasional dubstep track, yet always the tunes that really matter.
(US) Psychedelic · Heavy Jams
»A jamband from Brooklyn, NY, the best kept secret of the city en Stephen Malkmus’ favorite band.
Endless Boogie doesn't have a big agenda. They just want to rock with you. Four dudes that deal in manly vibes and tasty action. And another thing; when Endless Boogie was born, the nurse looked at them and said ‘Oh my God, it's Endless Boogie'... and slept with them. At that point she had become the third woman to sleep with Endless Boogie.
(US) Trip-Hop · Electronic · Jazz
»Psychedelic-electronic-jazzy- hip-hop with experimental melodies and driving drums. Producer Chris Alfaro from California debuted in 2010 with a fresh album called Ctrl Alt Del. While playing live, the American throws with obscure samples, live instruments and controllers. Where Flying Lotus goes left, Free The Robots steers to the right. Also fits in the line of names like Daedelus, Gaslamp Killer and Pantha du Prince.

»This one could get huge.Glunge, he calls his own music. You could also say lo-fi powerpop, in the same tradition as Girls, Ariel Pink and a bit of Idiot Glee. The young Briton Sam McGarrigle builds genius pop palaces. His first dollhouse was made in Brighton with his band Hocus Le Guess Who?

»Julien Mier is a young composer and producer living in Hilversum. In his eclectic production he's not afraid of a clash of musical genres. He packs fragmented melodies into dreamy, melancholic stories. Think of a warped, fucked up Baths and Mount Kimbie with some Autechre and Boards of Canada.
(JAP) Noiserock · Experimental · Japanese
»Nisennenmondai started in 1999 and is named after the millennium bug. Three severely hyper-active and technically savvy Japanese women create droney danceable post-core like you've never heard before. You can hear Battles and Marnie Stern in their compositions, but also compatriots Boredoms clearly inspired Nisen- nenmondai. For an impression watch some live footage of the song Mirrorball: you’ll be amazed.

»The first impression of Puro Instinct (Los Angeles, US) is that of a Korean karaoke bar where two giggling girls sing The Cure. A little drunk, a little off-key, but with a lot of passion. The core of this etherical project are the sisters Kaplan. The blonde young hippieswag of Skylar and Piper (yes, really) translates to dreamy pop with loads of clever eighties guitar melodies. How great would it be if Patrick Bateman from American Psycho would once more preach his freaky wikipedia style opinion on Puro Instincts songs.
(US) Hip-Hop · Groove · Electronic
»Dirty funky bass lines, glitchy beats, noisy synth lines, hip-hop melodies, boombap, breakbeats and jazzy electronics. The Britisch Vanese Smith aka Pursuit Grooves combines and experiments very cleverly with it. Like Flying Lotus, when he would allow more hip-hop and Atari sounds in his productions.
CLUB 3VOOR12/UTRECHT: HOLLANDSE NIEUWE (NL) New wave · Post punk
»Rats On Rafts - four guys from Rotterdam - started playing in 2005, only six years later they are being called the new wave and post punk revelation of the Netherlands. Their vinyl single The Moneyman brought them a spot on the twelfth Hollandse Nieuwe compilation, a spot on the Popronde and a tour around England. Meanwhile, the debut album The Moon Is Big was released, which received unani- mous praise for its nine razor sharp tracks, they were 3VOOR12 Hollandse Nieuwe of the Month in October, played live at 3FM and in De Wereld Draait Door.

»The Finnish quartet Siinai recently started working together. The proggy krautrock electro with retro Vangelis-elements was recently captured on the debut record called Olympic Games. »Writing an item about Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks without noting Pavement would be absurd. But the fact that leadsinger Malkmus has created an impressive list of great records is sometimes forgotten in the light of Pavement’s recent reunion. Together with The Jicks and legend Beck, Malkmus recently popped into the studio for a new full-length album. The new record Mirror Traffic is again a hit from start to finish, as they intelligently recorded a very rich musical experience. Lyrically as inimitable as brilliant, less rock and more ‘chamber music’ and with instant catch phrases like Le Guess Who? 19 2011

»Since 2005 we’re allowed to call Smog by his real name: Bill Callahan. Has nothing changed? Yes and no. Callahan, singer-song- writer is still using the experimental and atmospheric Smog sounds, but seems to have found more peace. It provides more comfortable music while it still bites and asks questions, both vulnerable and unctuous. This American artist makes use of country and blues rock, but also likes to slow it down to emphasize his soulful voice. Irony, stinging questions and hope alternate on his last album Apocalypse that recalls some of the typical grit from the Smog era.

Music journalist David Kleijwegt made the dramatic documentary You May Need A Murderer about the core of the band: the Sparhawk’s. Kleijwegt follows the drug addict Mormon Alan experiencing a severe episode that Mimi tries to explain. It provides an insight into the music of Low, but most of all into the urgency behind the songs and band members. "When making a record is easy, you’re doing something wrong," Alan once said in an interview. O « saturday » R Austin, Texas. Will Sheff and his peers have been crafting indiefolk songs ever since their start in 1998. Though occasionally abrasive, in recent years they have been delib- erately searching for rich sounds and arrangements. Okkervil River was Roky Erickson’s live band, after which Sheff produced its True Love Cast Out All Evil. That worked out so well, that he continued to produce Okkervil’s latest album, I Am Very Far. This record is deeper and more moody than their previous works. According to Sheff, the ideas for the eleven songs came to him spiritu- ally. That sounds vaguer than it is. The new songs are romantic, angry, as well as pressing. It’s almost as if songwriters are real people.

»Yes, Still Corners could defi- nitely be the discovery of this fall. It’s no surprise that their debut album is being released by the reputable Sub Pop label. The British belle Tessa Murray and lyricist Greg Hughes make love songs. Small songs, but very drawn out. Sometimes with just a simple drum computer, thin guitar strokes and slow moody synths. While another moment the contem- porary whisper voice glides through heavy drums and a watery organ. Think of Beach House on valium, but with eyes wide open. Concen- trated hypothermia, if you like.

Is a Tomboy a Young Prayer who likes to eat Strawberry Jam? What’s with the title? It seems more bleak than Person Pitch or Sung Tongs. ‘Tomboy’ was a symbol for a lot of the things I found myself singing about. Things that were kind of opposed to each other, but existed in me at the same time. The most clearcut example of where the name came from is in the song ‘Tomboy’, which is essentially about the different as-
pects of my life and how these conflict and how they work together. There is my musical life, which is my work life, and my home life. For example, my job connects with crowds of people whereas in my home life I feel like I’m a very shy person. When I am around lots of people I get really anxious. That’s the simplest way of putting it. I found myself addressing a lot of juxtapositions in my life with a lot of the songs. 4M /]M[[ ?PW'

Do you have any fun facts about panda bears to tell when, for instance you find yourself sitting around a campfire? The only thing I know about panda bears is that they look like sweet animals, but that in fact they can be really vicious and violent. Actually they represent that tomboything in the sense that they seem like they are one thing, but are a totally different thing at the same time. I wish I knew more about panda bears. I’ve seen a couple of them at the zoo once, but that’s about it. I just think they’re really cool looking animals. I love the fact that they are black and white. Talking about juxtapositions. You’ve been living in Portugal for quite some time now. Is fado slowly 4M /]M[[ ?PW' 53
seeping into your music? Or maybe it has always been latently there? For Tomboy I consider, even though a lot of people here would find that ridiculous, fado an indirect inspiration. Fado singing to me is close to being over the top. It’s emotive and very forceful. I like it when you hear somebody singing like that. They seem passionate and sound like they really mean it. It’s almost as if listening to fado music slaps you in the face. I wanted to write songs that have that attitude. How’s the social intimacy within the band? Any activities outside Suuns with your bandmates, like attending christenings or funerals together? It’s kind of hard to tell lately, because we’ve been spending so much time together being on tour. telling me that he had a dream in which his dog died, and when he awoke he was crying. That was really sweet. So, such an emotional confession tightens the bond between you - or do you secretly think he’s a woosie? No, not at all. We are a very sensitive band. We are sophisticated gentlemen. Okay, just to be clear. Who’s the most intellectual and talks about politics and insurances and that kind of stuff? We don’t really talk politics that often, but I would say it’s Ben (singer/ guitarist), because he reads The New York Times the most. What do you talk about? I’m the only one that doesn’t have a driver’s licence. Usually in the morning I drink a bunch of coffee and talk the ear off of the driver for the whole ride, about all kinds of stuff really. That’s nice, sitting in the back seat and watching everything slide past you. The back seat of the car is like another time zone really. Is your gratification level in balance or do you think Suuns have peaked too early? That’s funny, I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. We are relatively successful in Europe. It’s an incredible contrast to how we seem to be doing in the US. I don’t know to
which extent it’s a peak or not. We’ve benefited from experiencing tremendous highs and lows almost simultaneously in the sense that it makes us humble. At the same time it’s also rather frustrating. Not that we expect to be very successful. I guess in a way we’re like an ice cube in hot water sometimes. Who’s the most codependent of the band? Who’s most likely to not know what to do with themselves when Suuns decide to go on hiatus? That would be me. I’ve always considered myself tremendously lucky to be in Suuns. I feel like a bit of an impostor sometimes, being surrounded by so many great and talented people. Who energises you the most? This can be a band member or your little sister after winning a math tournament or maybe after she’s been dumped again. In the band the battery shell is definitely Liam (drums), he’s got the most energy. He would be the first one to laugh at a joke, even though he doesn’t get it. He’s very optimistic. Subbacultcha!: You carry a bra in your handbag, why is that? Raphaelle: Sometimes, I just feel like I need a bra. It’s really hard for me to part with it at times. Especially if I’m going out to dinner with my boyfriend’s parents or onstage, I just NEED to put a bra on just so things aren’t moving about.
had taken it out from his public library and somewhere along the way I started reading it. Then I was like, ‘Reese, I’m not going to be able to finish this before the end of tour but I really want to keep reading it! Can you call your library and just see if I could just pay the fine for it?’ I think it is really beautifully written.
What's that book in there? It looks about the size of the bible. That’s Anna Karenina by Tolstoy. One of the boys who was on tour with us, Reese from Painted Palms,
What’s that little baggy you’ve got there? Not drugs! It’s an energy booster, guarana. It’s the pure plant derivative of the stuff in energy drinks. 4M /]M[[ ?PW'

Uh-huh. And all the tiny bottles? They’re tinctures, different kinds of herbal remedies to keep me healthy. Yoga? I went to hot yoga in Nashville and it was more like boot camp. The instructor kept saying things like, ‘Ok people, tuck in your tummies! Do you want to get diabetes?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t want to get diabetes!’ Usually in yoga, you’re not thinking about fucking diabetes, you’re trying to think about nothing. 4M /]M[[ ?PW' 63
What are some of the things in here you take with you everywhere? A notebook so I can write down lyrics and stuff. A red friendship bracelet I have with my best friend Ezra—I bring it along with me because I miss him. And once on tour, we went grocery shopping and I found this miniature horse in my basket. I’m a horse on the Chinese Zodiac so I thought it was a good luck charm. Braids play on Thursday November 24th
