Welcome to Le Guess Who? 2013 When we first started the festival in 2007, our intention was to showcase the music that moved and interested us at that moment. Now we’ve grown from a one-room affair to a proper city festival; added Le Guess Who? May Day, a one-day event at the half year mark; and even taken our garage night to an international stage with last year’s Fuzzbox event in London. Our concept was and is to respond to the changing dynamics in music by offering, above all things, a program of solid, interesting content. This year, we are proud to host a festival that continues to reflect what we most wanted to create: a classy line-up presented in a context where artist and audience are united in one intimate experience, while also joining newer musicians together with more familiar names who’ve influenced them.

New location: Janskerk Mark Lanegan, Linda Perhacs and Ólafur Arnalds to perform in one of Utrecht’s oldest churches We are very grateful to host three days of performances in the Janskerk (John’s church) during Le Guess Who? 2013. Frankly, it would be a sin not to. The church has served many different purposes since it was built in 1040, making it a place that truly serves the city and its citizens. It still features some beautiful original interior details, like the decoratively painted wooden barrel vault in the ship’s ceiling.

Le Mini Who? Saturday November the 30th brings the 5th edition of Le Mini Who?. Twice a year, we transform our favorite downtown neighborhood into a festival ground with 25+ venues, focusing on the best new music the Dutch underground has to offer. Utrecht’s finest hotspots, varying from record stores, clothing shops and art galleries to old cellars, bars and cafes, will act as venues for exciting in-store performances by many artists and bands, hosted by (their) record labels, magazines or platforms. So please don’t let the name fool you, there’s nothing ‘mini’ about Le Mini Who? anymore... New things are happening! Aside from our music program, young creative collectives will now transform a variety of shops and cafés into little playgrounds. Damien Jurado exhibition in Tivoli Oudegracht Damien Jurado is not a regular musician; he’s a special breed of multidisciplinary artist. While most people might know him as Damien Jurado the musician, he is also a respected pop artist. In many ways, Jurado is always on the l ookout for new art forms and sounds to develop, pushing his own boundaries and those of who he works with.
During this edition of Le Guess Who?, we’re glad to not only welcome Jurado as a performer, but also to provide a platform to showcase his visual art by hosting an exclusive exhibition of some of his best works in Tivoli Oudegracht.

Ty Segall
Ty Segall performing Sleeper, hosting a stage on Friday We are very glad to welcome back Ty Segall to Le Guess Who? in 2013! Ty played the festival twice before: first in 2010, and later in 2012 during the sold-out Fuzzbox program component. This year, Ty will step out of his garage-fuzz insanity and pulls out the acoustic guitar to perform his latest album ‘Sleeper’, an almost entirely acoustic, psychedelic folk experience
Ty has eight studio albums behind his name since 2008, and there’s an even more awe-inspiring back catalogue of countless releases as a member in different bands, collaborative projects, guest appearances, EPs, compilations, etcetera. Last year alone he released three full length studio albums: one as Ty Segall, another under the name Ty Segall Band, and ‘Hair’, his collaboration with

White Fence. And this year he’s even stepped back to the drumset with proto-metal power trio Fuzz. Ty Segall will curate a stage of his own on Friday night in Tivoli de Helling. Silkscreen concert posters Make sure to drop by at Kargadoor during Le Guess Who? for an exhibition of gorgeous silkscreen concert posters from around the world. As an initiative by Utrecht silkscreen artist Joris Diks (Handprinted Stuff), more than 35 silkscreen artists from around the world will be on display from November 28 – ÂDecember 1. All the posters are original contemporary pieces of art, created in collaboration with the musicians and concert halls they depict. Naturally, there will be a selection of limited edition Le Guess Who? 2013 silkscreen posters for sale as well!

On Saturday November 30th the very first Gaudeamus ‘Muziekdag’ will take place in collaboration with Le Guess Who?, wholly committed to (live) electronic music in its broadest sense. Sunday in dB’s: Since the devil is gone, I mostly feel lonely A live music platform home to Berlin’s culturally rich Kreuzberg neighborhood, created in 2011 via Festsaal Kreuzberg and Monarch in order to adress the musical blindspots between high-, pop- and folk art. Focusing on obscure traditionaland outsider music which, despite tremendous talent, thrives mostly unnoticed by todays mainstream audiences the concert series is meant to bring broader attention to some of the finest artists you might have never heard of.

Al Lover DJ set, psychedelic rock, garage, hip-hop (US) Al Lover is a producer and beat maker pur sang. But while most of his colleagues seem to be obsessed with synths, Al Lover uses shaky drums and other samples of contemporary garage and psychedelic rock from the past, and remixes them to c reate his own style of spacey hip-hop beats he calls “Al Lover’s Distorted Reverberations of Reverberating Distortion”. Some of his remixes include (former) Le Guess Who? artists like Ty Segall, White Fence and Thee Oh Sees.
Cheap Time Garage-rock, power pop (US) It can be quite hard to adequately define Cheap Time and the explosive trail of turmoil they leave in their wake. An energetic garage-rock trio at its core, they don’t shy away from poppy melodies, punk and 70s glam rock influences. It’s this unique aggregation of styles that led them

to tour with Yo La Tengo and Jay Reatard. Cheap Time has not only proven to create a cohesive sound from an impressive blend of styles, but above all managed to set themselves apart musically and provide us with infectious albums that you just can’t overlook.
Club 3voor12/Utrecht: Hollandse nieuwe (NL) Continuing the tradition from our previous editions, Le Guess Who? is once again joining forces with music and media platform 3VOOR12/Utrecht to provide you with ‘Hollandse Nieuwe’, a phrase that is not only used to refer to the first Dutch soused herring of the season that is suitable for consumption, but also for new talented musicians from Dutch soil. In the past we’ve seen acts like Rats On Rafts, Knalpot and Those Foreign Kids share the stage at dB’s on the Thursday of Le Guess Who?, and now a new generation of fresh and promising Dutch bands is ready to show what they’ve got.

DIANA Synthpop (CA) DIANA started as the musical partnership between two university trained musicians Joseph Shabason and Kieran Adams. With a distinctly woozy synth sound, occasionally supported by saxophone, they seem to pay tribute to that infamous 80s sound. However, when they asked vocalist Carmen Elle to try singing to a track they were immediately blown away by the result and Elle has since joined the band permanently. Now all the pieces started to fall into place it became clear that although they flirt with the past, in terms of composition and vision DIANA is undeniably present. Or better yet, futuristic.
Dirty Beaches Post-rockabilly, no wave (TW) Alex Zhang Hungtai spent a good portion of his life astray, physically moving from place to place. The remaining time was spent escaping reality by watching movies by the likes of David Lynch and Wong Kar-wai. The surrealism of the passage of time and how this distorts

your relationship with everything else in life are a recurring theme in these movies, which has clearly influenced the works of Dirty Beaches. Repetitive guitar rhythms are draped over lo-fi drum loops, with Hungtai’s rockabilly vocals put through an overdriven microphone to top it off. This creates a conceptual film-like atmosphere that translates into a claustrophobic live experience.
DJ Quesedilla Psychedelic sounds globetrotter (PT) Hailing from Lisbon, Portugal comes DJ Quesedilla; a man of rhythms, a man of good taste. DJ Quesedilla travels to all corners of the world to collect the best indigenous and psychedelic sounds from dusty archives and dodgy basements. From Afrobeat to Turkish psychedelia, Brazilian Tropicalia and even Japanese Group Sounds, DJ Quesedilla knows exactly what he likes and where to find it.

Duke Garwood Blues, experimental, singer-songwriter (UK) Duke Garwood has been universally praised as a master bluesman. His music is characterized by his muttering vocals and distinctive yet diverse guitar sound, which ranges from skilled finger-picking to shrieking waves of feedback. Duke Garwood has recorded and toured with many like-minded contemporaries like Kurt Vile, Josh T. Pearson and Mark Lanegan. Lanegan would even go as far as to call Garwood one of his all time favorite artists, and their collaboration on 2013’s ‘Black Pudding’ album one of the best experiences of his recording life.
Filho de Mãe Instrumental folk rock, Guitar virtuoso (PT) Rui Carvalho originally made name for himself in Portugal’s hardcore scene as the guitarist of the highly influential mathcore band If Lucy Fell. The sleight of hand and technical ability needed to play this kind of music would later prove to be of

nimaginable value when Carvalho u began his acoustic solo project, Filho de Mãe. His fingers effortlessly glide over his guitar, combining the techniques of mathcore with folk aesthetics to create his very own captivating brand of acoustic guitar mastery.
Glasser Experimental electropop, singer-songwriter (US) One-woman orchestra Glasser uses a wide variety of acoustic instruments, layered with beats, electronic sounds and her entrancing voice. She uses her songs to deliver abstract narratives, often leading towards a central theme or idea that covers the whole album. While Glasser tries to make sense of the world around her, she is both captivated by the freedom of creation and traveling, while also feeling anxiety for the uncertainty and change that inevitably comes with it. It’s this fascinating duality that acts as a creative drive and makes her work ever so intriguing.

King Khan & The Shrines
La Flama Blanca
Garage rock, psychedelic soul (CA) With a horn section that will blow any garage rock head of their feet, King Khan & The Shrines is psychedelic soul like you’ve never heard before. It’s raw garage rock meets big band with a salty pinch of funk. In their 14 years of existence they have grown out to become a cult phenomenon, and it’s certainly no coincidence that they have earned the nickname ‘The Supreme Genius of King Khan and His Sensational Shrines’, not only thanks to their unique sound but also due to their overwhelming and spectacular stage frolics.
Cumbia & Tropical Break DJ (PT) La Flama Blanca from Lisbon, Portugal is an expert on Cumbia. This music genre originates from the Colombian caribbean coastal region, where a melting pot of native Colombians, African slaves and Spanish settlers was responsible for the distinctive sound we know today. Cumbia is still massively popular throughout hispanic America and we’re very grateful that La Flama Blanca has made it his life goal to collect these sounds and enabling the rest of the world to enjoy it as much as he does.

Mark Lanegan Singer-songwriter (US) While Mark Lanegan may still be best known as the lead singer for Screaming Trees, he continued to build an impressive solo career after the band broke up in 2000. His solo works are notably more personal and acoustic in nature, and Mark doesn’t back away from adventurous collaborations either. He is involved in many different musical projects like doing guest vocals for Queens of the Stone Age and recording albums with Belle & Sebastian. Mark has taught us to expect the unexpected and his performance at Le Guess Who? will be no exception.

Meridian Brothers Experimental salsa, psychedelic (CO) When Eblis Álvarez, one of the key figures of the experimental music scene in Bogota, Colombia, started experimenting with alternative ways to play traditional and e lectronic instruments in 1998, he was particularly influenced by Argentinian rock. However, it was one year later when he became interested in tropical Colombian music that the Meridian Brothers sound that we know and love today was born. They play a very experimental, playful and twisted form of salsa that creates a psychedelic world of its own filled with Latin rhythms, endless grooves and meandering organs.
Neko Case Americana, singer-songwriter (US) American singer-songwriter Neko Case may to some be best known for her contributions as a member of The New Pornographers, but has an equally impressive and valued solo career. Her music is best described as melancholic Americana, which at times can pack a formidable punch

as well as be surprisingly tender and delicate. Her newest release ‘The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You’ features contributions by M. Ward of She & Him on guitar.
Oneohtrix Point Never Electronic, drone, ambient (US) Inspired by classic video game soundtracks as well as Stevie Wonder’s synth sounds he discovered in his father’s record collection, Oneohtrix Point Never presents an interesting mix of sounds and styles. It ventures into meandering ambient and drone, with an occasional trip into noise. His soft-spot for vintage gear like the Roland Juno-60 s ynthesizer and Korg ES1 sampler help to recreate and redefine a sense of time and space, making you feel like you weightlessly float around in the endless sound waves he produces while gently encasing you in soothing warm bubbles of solar winds.

Night Beats Psychedelic garage rock (US) Night Beats take the raw 60’s psychedelic sound of guitars drenched in reverb and pounding drums, and capture what made that era special by packing it in ingeniously written sizeable chunks. Although they’ve come a long way since their H-Bomb EP, you can’t help but wonder if they still record everything in one take on a single track. Which would not only explain their playful sound, but actually make a whole lot of sense.

patten Electronic, experimental (UK) Resembling a musical whirlwind of synths, sounds and fragments, p atten is equally trippy as it is thrilling. His compositions twist and twitch with such velocity and determination that it’s easy to get lost in the hallucinatory world he creates, before having no option left but to surrender to your motion sickness. But when you overcome this, you’ll find a mesmerising and emotionally rich maze that you’ll be happy to get lost in. patten is known to translate this to an on-stage experience using processed guitars and vocals, as well as a fully integrated live video element when available.
Roly Porter Dark ambient, drone, industrial (UK) Roly Porter is heavy, in a similar way as visiting an old church can be a heavy experience. You find yourself in a breathtaking, overwhelming place where you feel great powers are at play, although you don’t know what or why exactly. To say Roly Porter’s industrial noises and drones

are incredibly dark and massively overwhelming is an understatement to say the least. He balances this out with contemporary classical compositions on some of his more mellow tracks. But even when he isn’t literally blowing you away with industrial noise, he knows perfectly well how to set the mood to draw you into his dark twisted world.
Séan Rua Rhythms of the tropics (origin unknown) Emerging from a sun soaked paradise in the south, Séan Rua explores the rhythms of the tropics with deep, rich, uncompromising DJ sets that tap deep into the magical sound of the islands of his youth. He delivers phat basslines, mystical breaks and latin scratch. Having spent many years navigating the clubs, cafe’s and aguardiente shacks of the south, Séan Rua has emerged from the endless ocean and is hitting the north to bring you his magnetic heavenly beats.

Superhumanoids Synth pop, indie pop (US) Although they first met while they were all still playing in different projects, the three members of Superhumanoids immediately bonded over their love for 80s synths and contemporary R&B that utilized instruments often used in pop music, like guitars and drum machines. You can almost smell the hazy LA breeze as soon as you pop in their record and their male and female vocals embark on a cheerful interplay. Their keyboards seem to melt in the setting sun, while the drum machines and faint guitars provide a safe structure for all the other elements to move freely in.
style might have taken a slightly different turn with every change in membership, their music is characterized by repetitive guitar patterns and Smith’s sneering and cynical vocals which have earned them a strong cult following which lasts until this very day. Absolutely Free Math-rock, electronica (CA) Compared to their previous band DD/ MM/YYYY, Absolutely Free are less chaotic in song structures and allow themselves to freely explore a hypnotic groove for longer extents of time. However, even after playing together for eight years, they don’t settle for fixed formulas or task divisions. This is reflected by shifts in time signatures, trading parts and instruments and alterations in levels of energy. Often all of this within one song, creating a much more dynamic and dramatic sound.
Alex Smoke presents Wraetlic Electronica, minimal techno, IDM (SC) Although Scottish producer and DJ Alex Menzies always liked the idea of making music under one name, he felt that his stage name Alex Smoke was too much associated with minimal house. So when he wanted to do something different, a new name was in place. Wraetlic is his exploration into IDM beats and minimal techno while

putting his four years of experience of singing in a choir to good use. He explains that although doing live vocals is terrifying to him, he likes to push his music in new directions that don’t necessarily make him feel comfortable.
Braids Art rock, electronic indie pop (CA) After spending 18 months touring to promote their debut album, Braids decided it was best to retreat in order to move forward. They isolated themselves in their Montreal studio to spend a year of undisturbed writing and recording, seeking out to explore a more introspective and electronic approach to songwriting. As a result, their sophomore album shows fewer noise/shoegaze influences and puts more emphasis on short loops and glitches, bearing resemblance to textures and arrangements usually heard in minimal techno, making it easy for the listener to close their eyes and wander off in thought.

Brokeback Instrumental, ambient, post rock (US) Douglas McCombs, best known as the bassist of Tortoise, started Brokeback as a minimalist sideproject with less constrictions to the post rock genre. Fusing many different genres including jazz, rock, ambient and hip-hop, Brokeback’s newest incarnation features three new members who helped to revitalize the project. Their goal was to approach this as anyone’s ‘first band’. So they set up a strict practice schedule, and then played as many shows as they could. Now Brokeback is back with an instrumental post rock album on which the electric guitar sometimes seems to be blessed with a voice and amazing stories to tell.

On 2013’s album Stitches he used a deliberately solitary process of songwriting, allowing himself to feel less self-conscious and more vulnerable, and write straight from his nerves and heart.
Connan Mockasin
Dream pop, psychedelic rock (NZ) Having recorded his first song when he was just five years old, it was clear from an early age that Connan was a kid with the talent and drive to make music. Years later he started his own band, Connan & the Mockasins, which enjoyed respectable success in New Califone Zealand and the UK before Connan left Indie rock, experimental folk (US) the band because it didn’t allow him After Red Red Meat broke up, frontman to express his individuality. Daughn Gibson Singer-songwriter, alt-country, electronic (US) On a first listen, Daughn Gibson’s deep, baritone voice might be the first thing you notice as striking. And although his voice certainly is beautiful, it’s the unprecedented way he defines his own genre which is really outstanding. For example, during his time as a truck driver he listened to a lot of country. He takes the storytelling aspect of that and adds richly orchestrated parts, while at the same time giving it a contemporary twist with avid sampling and electronics. Up to a point where his voice becomes another instrument, a natural element that complements the whole instead of standing out.

Ed Askew
Singer-songwriter, folk (US) Painter and singer-songwriter Ed Askew is somewhat of a New York legend. He recorded and released his first psychedelic folk record ‘Ask The Unicorn’ in 1968, using an incredibly hard to play Martin Tiple, a Latin instrument. Although the album quickly disappeared in obscurity, he soon recorded his second album only to savor it for more than 30 years until it was finally released on vinyl in Disappears 2002. Esmerine Modern chamber music (CA) Using just a small collection of classical instruments mostly limited to the cello, marimba, harp and percussion, Esmerine could be described as a very intimate band. They require the listener’s full attention, as the intricate beauty might already have passed if you don’t stop whatever you’re doing to sit down and listen. This might not make Esmerine the most accessible act around, but certainly one of the most rewarding.
Fat White Family Lo-fi garage rock, psychpop (UK) Fat White Family started when these five blokes were squatting together and wanted to be in a country band. So their first gigs were at the open acoustic nights of London’s oldest running country night, but after more and more things inside the pub were getting broken, the country night was disbanded. This hardly came as a surprise, because Fat White Family pretty much tore the place apart with their messy noise. So they decided to start their own night in another pub.

Now they’re one of England’s most promising psychpop bands, and just as noisy and messy (if not messier) as in those early days.
Forest Swords Ambient dub, dark electronic (UK) With Forest Swords, British producer Matthew Barnes uses looping guitar samples and hip-hop beats together with a whole bunch of other manipulated samples to create something that is intensely dark and atmospheric. Haunting melodies slowly emerge as his songs progress into a dreamlike state that feels like it go on forever. Earlier this year Forest Swords performed an impressive live set during Le Guess Who? May Day, so we’re glad to welcome him back to our festival once more.

J.C. Satàn Garage punk, psychedelic rock (FR) This band is made up of an unlikely bunch of likeminded internationals. Two girls from Italy and three guys from France, to be exact. It’s actually quite a feat that they managed to form such a mature unit, completely defining their own style, when you think about the geographical challenge they must have faced. Moody, dark psychedelic melodies and raging guitar riffs give the lyrically abstract songs a sense of context as they describe unwieldy adventures like hazy sex and fighting your way out of hell, only to emerge as a superhero.

Hailu Mergia Ethiopian, instrumental (ET) 2013 saw the re-release of Ethiopian one-man-band Hailu Mergia’s 1985 ingenious solo album “Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument”, on which he captures the nostalgic sounds of his youth and unites them with modern technology. He initially rose to fame in the 70s, as the keyboardist for the much appraised Ethiopian jazz-funk outfit Walias Band. He has barely set foot on stage since the early 90s and currently works as a taxi driver in the Washington area. Seeing him back on stage is sure to be a unique and otherworldly experience.
Jacuzzi Boys Garage rock (US) Since the Jacuzzi Boys first emerged in 2007, they have unwittingly managed to profile themselves as one of the most promising acts in garage rock. Iggy Pop famously praised them in an interview back in 2009, which certainly helped to kickstart their career. What sets Jacuzzi Boys apart from most other garage rock bands, is that they seem more relaxed and laid-back instead of pumped-up in a

punk kind of way. They admit that none of them are incredibly gifted musicians, but rather just “do what we can do”. This easy going attitude seeps through their music, making it feel free spirited and never forced upon.
Jonathan Toubin 45rpm rock/soul DJ (US) His collection of obscure 7-inch singles (which he obsessively curates) is the rock-n-roll heart and soul of any Jonathan Toubin DJ set. He has said goodbye to mp3s, CDs and even LPs and exclusively spins 45rpm vinyl records. The gamble and hard work of having to spend nearly all his time and hard-earned cash on finding his favorite records has paid off, as his New York Night Train party machine is notoriously famous all over the states and beyond.
Linda Perhacs Psychedelic folk, singer-songwriter (US) After her first album was originally released in 1970, Linda Perhacs quickly returned to her career as a dental technician as the album was hardly promoted and didn’t attain any commercial success. However, in the 30 years that

followed, the album slowly gained a cult following. Many artists have cited the mysterious Linda Perhacs as a major source of inspiration, including Sonic Youth and Daft Punk. It took the folk label Wild Places two years to track her down in order to reissue the album in 2005. Now, after 43 years, Perhacs releases her second album that promises to be equally spooky and psychedelic in nature.
Lower Punk (DK) If after playing your first show your fellow Danish punkers Iceage say it’s almost annoying how good your band is, you better believe every word they’re saying. Although such compliments are in place, this is no reason for Lower to suddenly walk on the sunny side of life. Being labeled as agressive “downer punk” more than once, Lower explains that it’s easier to genuinely write about how sad you are than to pretend everything is fine. Although drummer Anton prefers the term ‘afraid’, their songs certainly have a dark and melancholic feel which somehow intuitively comes to them.

Maarten Vos Cellist, experimental (NL) As a classically schooled cellist, Utrecht musician Maarten Vos uses different electronic and acoustic extended techniques to enrich and manipulate the old sound of his cello. His music can be defined as dreamy landscapes with an experimental touch. Maarten collaborates with a wide range of different international ensembles and artists in electronic, classical, and pop music.
Magnetix Garage rock, post-punk (FR) This French duo uses an explosive mix of influences to create their own version of what garage rock should be; they take the fury of the ‘50s, experimentation of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and the apocalyptic anger of ‘80s post-punk. But maybe the most jaw-dropping fact is that they’ve been doing it for 15 years now. It’s incredible to think that the sound this uncontrollable duo produces, given its influences mainly lie in eras long gone, can still be so incredibly current and even innovative.

No Joy Noise pop, shoegaze (CA) No Joy was initially formed as a long distance collaboration between founders Jasmine and Laura, by sending recorded tracks back and forth via email. Then the whole project switched gears when the label Mexican Summer got involved after h earing two songs on their Myspace page. They expanded from a duo to a quartet and less than a year after forming they recorded their debut album, which captures the sound of shoegaze while adding a spooky touch and infectious melodies. After playing with Best Coast, singer Bethany Cosentino put it best by tweeting “Dude, No Joy is the best band ever. Two hot blonde girls just shredding away. Sooooo amazing”.

Mike Donovan Singer-songwriter, folk rock (US) Taking inspiration from bluegrass and images of misty mountains cloaked in long veils of thick fog, Mike Donovan worked on his solo album after his former band Sic Alps split up earlier this year. On this record, the acoustic guitar is more prominently present than ever before, giving way to a much more stripped down and introverted but warm sound. It’s the perfect soundtrack to a long and lonesome hike through the San Francisco Peaks to escape San Fran’s hectic city life.
accompanied by intricate electronica and ambient found sounds, although the fine line that determines which of the two is there in support of the other is often blurred. It’s this ambiguity that makes Piano Interrupted so compelling.
The Black Angels
Psychedelic rock (US) As the founders and curators of one of the world’s leading psychedelic festivals, Austin Psych Fest, there’s no denying that The Black Angels are at the forefront of an exciting movement. The Dodos Freakfolk, indie pop (US) The Dodos are characterized by unruly rhythms, folky fingerpicking and alternative ideas on what constitutes an instrument and how these should be played. This unpredictable indie rock duo takes inspiration from West African Ewe drumming and country blues fingerpicking, as well as progressive metal and brilliantly combines this into unique and fiery freakfolk, often played using only an acoustic guitar and semi-improvised drum kit. Since their last show on Le Guess Who? in 2009 they have reevaluated the way they approach songwriting and recording, with the hefty album ‘Carrier’ (2013) as a result.

The Wytches Surf doom, psychedelia (UK) Although psychedelia is most often associated with joyous moments of drug-fueled insights and new appreciations for the beautiful things around us, there is also a dark side. The Wytches capture these bad trips and paranoid moments of intense anxiety. They will put you under a psychedelic spell with their self proclaimed “surf doom”, recorded and produced in the same studio and by the same producer as The White Stripes’ iconic Elephant album. The Wytches’ concoction is certainly more foul, murky and poisonous in nature, but you’ll want to sip it down until the last drop anyway.
Total Heels Punk, garage rock (DK) While most current garage rock revivalist bands seem to draw inspiration from a predominantly 60’s sound, Total Heels are more reminiscent of early 70’s garage/ punk pioneers. Organs provide the low end while pounding guitars and ditto drums give the songs the

punch they need. Jason, Jacob and Jeppe (two Danes and an American) somehow seem to find just enough rehearsal time in order to direct their enthusiasm and craft their ideas into 3-minute bundles of pure energy, making their raw sound a logic result instead of a stylistic choice.
Ty Segall performing Sleeper Garage rock (US) Ty Segall has been called C alifornia’s wonderkid and is widely regarded as one of the key figures in San Francisco’s bustling garage scene, playing a major part in countless bands and collaborations. He f amously blends garage rock with psychedelica and punk, using heavy doses of fuzz and reverb to recreate that ‘60s tone without it ever becoming a shtick. In a similar fashion, Ty clearly knows that lo-fi recording equipment and a formidable DIY mentality is really all you need as long as your songs are good. And with this year’s acoustic release ‘Sleeper’ Ty proves that he doesn’t need a fuzz pedal to satisfy his listeners. More info on page 16-17

Vessel Electronica, ambient techno (UK) Bristol-based Sebastian Gainsborough a.k.a. Vessel has developed a sound that defies the classic definition of club genres. With an uncanny ambiguity in the way his tracks are constructed, he has the ability to surprise and perplex his listeners and critics alike. Using techno and house as his basic components, he adds beats and glitches to create an almost alien dub intensity that closely resembles nothing short of futuristic, controlled chaos.
Visionist Electronic, grime (UK) London has always been a f ertile breeding ground for exciting electronic music. However, Visionist has recently become annoyed by the lack of progress, and how most producers don’t bring anything new to the table. Contrary to this bleak analysis, Visionist himself incorporates techno techniques and US -inspired sounds, and links this with his background in grime. This way, Visionist has unwittingly become

a leading figure in a grime revival movement that seems increasingly focused around abstract instrumental productions.
White Fence Psychedelic rock, garage pop (US) Tim Presley is a man of great creative drive. When he isn’t busy being a member of Strange Boys, Darker My Love or creating collaborative magic with Ty Segall (remember their joint show at Le Guess Who? 2012?), he likes to work on his solo project White Fence. What comes out is an impressive collection of raw, nostalgia-inducing psychedelic pop with a certain 60’s feel to it. Recording most of the material in his bedroom, he explains that he only uses sounds which he knows and loves, using tools of the past. It’s the closest thing you’ll get to finding an old dusty record in the attic.

Wampire Indie rock, synth pop (US) Before starting Wampire, founding members Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps were already household names in the Portland house party scene. However, instead of making loud electronic music that was as danceable as possible like they used to, they decided upon a different and more diverse approach for their Wampire project. Their debut album ‘Curiosity’, produced by Jake Portrait from Unknown Mortal Orchestra, is a very convincing and infectious collection of danceable synth pop songs with a hint of psychedelia which is just as enjoyable on the dancefloor as it is at home on a rainy Sunday night.

Adult Jazz Alternative, pop (UK) In the music industry, you will always have cynicists that say there is no new music out there, that everything has already been done and today’s music is just a pale imitation of what came before. Adult Jazz defies that statement by innovating modern music in such a way that it becomes incredibly hard to pinpoint what it is exactly. Using traditional and modern instrumentation, they distil a variety of experimental influences into their weird pop music, creating an entirely new and unique world of sounds of their own that through it’s unfamiliarity has a subtle psychedelic edge to it.
and drift away. On record, Hargett’s lyrics are often undefinable due to the oozing layer of reverb that engulfs his track, allowing the vocals to take on the role of a fifth instrument. Crystal Stilts might sound familiar due to their moody lo-fi blend of garage-pop, surf and gazing psychedelica, but in a way this familiarity makes it an even more remarkable feat to be such a refreshing blast to listen to.
Darkstar
Electronic, warped psychedelic pop (UK) With a background in grime and dubstep, London based Darkstar have since evolved from a duo into a three-piece electronic music band. They traded the dubstep for a harmonics driven electronic sound Crystal Stilts with a distinct pop sensibility, dubbed Psych-pop, nu gaze (US) “warped psychedelic pop” in a review With walls of twangly guitar riffs, by The Times. DM Stith Folk, electronic (US) After he first explored the creative boundaries of writing, illustration and graphic design, DM Stith embarked on a new adventure by starting his own music career. Frankly, this was inevitable given his whole family consists of musicians; his father was a former church choir director, his mother a pianist and his sisters sing opera. This classical background can still be heard in DM Stith’s own music, as he uses classical instruments like the acoustic guitar and piano to make beautiful compositions, and layers these with electronic augmentations. The result is something that often sounds strange and otherworldly but somehow feels familiar, creating a beautiful duality.
Douglas Dare Singer-songwriter, composer (UK) As Douglas Dare is the son of a piano teacher, he started to experiment with composing instrumental music from an early age. After he began studying popular music at the University in Liverpool, he also picked

up songwriting in his own unique way. His songs usually start out as poems, to which he later improvises melodies and piano parts. His collaborative drummer/producer Fabian Prynn operates the same way. Together they recorded Dare’s songs as full takes using a cassette recorder, forcing themselves to apply this same technique of improvisation which has led to unexpected ideas, becoming an intrinsic element of Dare’s sound.
Dr. Munchheimer Hip-hop DJ (US) You don’t often get taught in the art of hip-hop by a lady like this. Without relying on technique, but with a great deal of drive and conviction, Dr. Munchheimer spins one smash hit after the other. EPMD, Kendrick Lamar, Ice Cube; with her sets she proves that the choice of records is still the number one prerequisite for success.

Dump Lo-fi, indie rock (US) Dump is the solo project of James McNew, the bassist of Yo La Tengo. Although Mcnew technically started this project in 1991, a year before he joined Yo La Tengo, he didn’t release anything under the name Dump for over two years. His solo work is characterized by charmingly personal, often lo-fi, songs and his gentle voice. He recorded everything at home using just four tracks, and has allegedly forsaken his solo project around 2008 to focus on Yo La Tengo. That’s why we’re extra thrilled to have McNew play as Dump on our festival once more.
Edan DJ set, alternative hip-hop, rap (US) Growing up, Edan was inspired by artists like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and psychedelic rock, and he even started playing guitar and bass in his teenage years. But everything changed when N.W.A. dropped ‘Straight Outta Compton’, shifting Edan’s area of interest from rock straight to rap. This life-changing

release inspired Edan to devote his life to writing and producing rap music, but his childhood love for rock and psychedelic music was never truly lost. His style is characterized by samples of his old records, gracefully marrying hip-hop and rock-based psychedelia, forming a harmonious unity.
Emily Wells Singer-songwriter, folktronica (US) As a classically trained violinist, Emily Wells blends her many d ifferent influences into her own, unique sound. She combines electronics, jazz, pop, hip-hop and sounds from her collection of classical and modern instruments and toys, sampling them live at her shows. To record her 2013 release ‘Mama’ she rented a small cabin on a horse ranch and recorded most of the instruments herself, at the ranch. This sense of secluded warmth and calmness has clearly found its way onto the record, making it an effortless joy to listen to.

Holly Herndon Electronic, experimental (US) – presented by Gaudeamus As a candidate for a doctoral study in Electronic Music at Stanford University, it’s pretty safe to say Holly Herndon knows a thing or two about electronic music. Not to mention she’s w riting a book on embodiment in electronic music performance and also teaches music technology. Thankfully her highly e ducated background does not result in brainy intelligentsia when it comes to her own musical work. On the contrary, her music breathes love and passion for electronica. It’s complex without being clinical, and relies heavily on using augmented vocal techniques and samples with hints of acid techno, which creates a sense of alienation and familiarization at the same time. James Pants Funktronic, hip-hop, boogie (US) When Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf was DJ-ing his local prom night, James Singleton (stage name James Pants) could not let the opportunity pass. With his prom date still in hand, he went up to PBW to introduce himself and invited him to go shopping for records the next day. The rest, so they say, is history. James started an internship at Stones Throw and over time PBW became more and more impressed with James’ mixtapes and production skills. Not much later James was signed to the label’s roster, allowing us to enjoy his mix of 80’s electronic funk, hip-hop and boogie with a hint of noise.
style is so surprising and unique that his label filed it under the genre ‘Prince of Persia on acid’. And that description is actually pretty much spot-on. Lonnie Holley Soul, blues, expressionist (US) From the age of five, Lonnie Holley grew up living on the streets and in several foster homes. His first artistic creation was when in 1979 he sculptured the tombstones for his sister’s children. From that point on he devoted his life to improvisational creativity, including drawing, painting, photography and performance art.
While his visual works have gained him nationwide exhibitions, he has quietly released music albums over the past decades as well. His music isn’t easily categorized but consists of improvised synth music and lyrics that come straight from his heart and soul, and which may change in something completely different every time he plays.
Mammane Sani: La Musique Electronique du Niger West African Electronic Music (NE) – presented by Gaudeamus Mammane’s first and only album was recorded in 1978 and released on cassette, of which about 100 were produced. One copy is owned by Mammane himself and another is preserved in Niger’s national music archive, the only two that remain. Armed with an organ and drumcomputer he produces minimal, electronic versions of traditional Nigerien music. His music is gentle, repetitive and extraordinary all at once. Everyone in Niger still knows it today because it is often used as background music in radio and television shows and commercials. Luckily the tape from the archive recently re-emerged and was used to reissue the recordings on vinyl for everyone to enjoy. More info on page 24

METZ Noise rock (US) METZ play loud. With a no-nonsense mentality, they live up to the old saying “if it doesn’t fit in a van, it’s not worth bringing”. Okay, that might not actually be an old saying, but at least it holds up for METZ. It’s one of those bands that, without even trying, reminds you that being in a band is about playing music with the highest levels of energy and devotion possible, leaving nothing but a trail of dropped jaws in their wake. With just a guitar, bass and drum kit they have devoured basements, skate shops, clubs, and festivals with relentless force.
Michael Feuerstack Folk, indie rock (CA) Before Michael Feuerstack started to make music under his own name, he was the driving force behind the solo/collaborative project Snailhouse. However, in 2012 he decided to a bandon the Snailhouse moniker. The black and white photo of Michael in his living room on the cover of the first album under his own name empowers this decision, and hints at

the delicate and personal nature of the beautiful, mostly acoustic gems that you’ll find inside. His lyrics tell a story and are always touching, even humorous at times.
Mickey Lightfoot Alternative hip-hop (UK) Despite his talent for football and music in high school, Mickey Lightfoot initially pursued the path of science, graduating University with a degree in physiology and pharmacy. However, when he started to promote club nights in Bristol his interest in music was sparked once again and he began making music. He incorporates elements of 90s hip-hop, modern soul and electronica, and carefully drapes his raps and vocals over it to create his own eclectic mix that shines light on the path of where modern hip-hop is heading. Others that come after him will have no choice but to follow or be left behind.

New York Night Train’s Soul Clap & Dance-Off Dance competition, 45rpm rock/soul DJ (US) All aboard, the New York Night Train takes off again and ain’t stopping for nobody! The conductor is none other than Jonathan Toubin, who already spinned some of his exclusive 45rpm vinyl records on Friday and is more than happy to set the New York Night Train in motion again on Saturday. His collection of obscure 7-inch singles is the rock-n-roll heart and soul of any Jonathan Toubin or New York Night Train set. But this time it’s extra special: make sure to put on your blue suede shoes and bust a move, because this is a Saturday night dance competition, Toubin style!

Ólafur’s take on the genre is characterized by blending classical sounds with pop, ambient and electronica influences, giving his compositions an almost cinematic appeal.
Pharmakon
Experimental, noise, death industrial (US) In contrast to most other experimental projects, Pharmakon’s music is not improvised while recording or performing. Instead, Margaret Chardiet strictly structures her compositions with a clear goal in mind, as if she’s writing a typical pop song. But her music is anything but typical or poppy. Sinister, nightmarish and overwhelming would be a better Ólafur Arnalds fitting description. Oddisee Hip-hop, rap (US) To understand rapper/producer Oddisee we must look at his family’s heritage. His Sudanese father learned him to appreciate the great singers, guitarists, and poets while his African American mother passed on her love for gospel and bluegrass. His older cousins introduced him to hip-hop, and the first vinyl record he got inspired him to start producing. In 2012 Oddisee won the iTunes Hip-Hop Album of the Year Award, but he is not one to capitalize on success. Instead he goes his own way: he likes to alternate between rap and instrumental albums, allowing him to pause MCing and focus on production every now and then.

Perera Elsewhere Doom folk, female vocalist (UK) Using organic sounds together with robotic electronica, vocalist Perera Elsewhere goes by her gut feeling rather than 足existing song crafting techniques. This can make her music quite abstract and unpredictable, making you constantly wonder what comes around the next musical bend. But that really is beauty of it: like the name almost seems to suggest, Perera Elsewhere sounds like a dark and adventurous journey to some unfamiliar place elsewhere, with only her haunting yet blissfully soothing vocals to guide and ease you.

PINS Post punk (UK) This “pack of she-wolves”, as they once described themselves, are on a ruthless attitude-fueled train ride on which the brakes broke down a long time ago. Their echoing guitars have filled hotel basements and abandoned office blocks, spreading the word that their raw debut album ‘Girls Like Us’ is actually not about being like them, but about being yourself. These noisy purists have set out to realize their dream of assembling a band and recording their loud yet thematically vulnerable post-punk music using all sorts of analogue tape recorders to experiment with.
Scout Niblett Singer-songwriter, minimalist folk rock (UK) Knowing Emma Louise Niblett (stage name Scout Niblett) cites several grunge bands as some of her main influences, you might be surprised to find out she adopts a uniquely minimalist, stripped down style to her own songwriting. Many of her songs consist of her vocals and either

a guitar or drum track, which she mostly plays herself. This approach has contributed to her reputation of delivering quite intimate live shows. Her recordings are crystal clear, with the instrument of choice centrally in the mix, making it feel like you invited someone into your living room to play just for you. Stellar OM Source Electronic, techno, ambient (US) – presented by Gaudeamus After her earlier cosmic ambient releases, Christelle Gualdi (a.k.a. Stellar OM Source) released her newest album ‘Joy On Mile’ earlier this year. Many applaud the album’s club friendly blend of UK-bass and Detroit techno, while also keeping in line with the soundscapes and warplike electronica that were presented in her earlier works. Kassem Mosse helped to arrange and mix the tracks, but the biggest success factor is that the album originated from Gualdi’s collection of favorite sounds and combinations. Surprisingly she doesn’t think of music as a long-term career, but wants to enjoy it while she can. So you better too, you won’t regret it. More info on page 24
Thao & The Get Down Stay Down Indie pop, folk rock (US) Thao Nguyen has spent most of her 20s touring to support her albums, up until a point that she decided that it was time to slow down. She settled

down in San Francisco, where she started participating in her community. She committed herself to a life away from music and started to work in prisons. Ironically, the people she met and worked with sparked the inspiration for a new set of quirky indie pop songs, which seem to hold more weight. Thao herself compares it to unfreezing ice, as she spent most of her 20s singing songs about life without actually being a real live person.
The Thing Free jazz, improvisation (SE) Norwegian/Swedish jazz trio The Thing play with such fierce devotion you can literally hear them gasping for air on-record. Although free jazz would technically be the term to describe their music, the title for their 2006 album ‘Action Jazz’ sometimes feels like a more accurate description. The Thing is the kind of band that doesn’t stop surprising, presenting something completely unexpected the second you think you’re on to them. One moment the saxophone screams like its dying in pain, the next it soothes your senses

Vex Ruffin Minimalist post-punk, garage rock (US) On first glance Vex Ruffin might seem like an unqualified punk musician who uses a few austere instruments to create uncomplicated minimalist punk. However, as the first and only artist to ever get signed to Stones Throw Records based on a spontaneously sent in demo, Vex Ruffin’s music is also firmly entrenched in sampling and beat-making culture. He initially used an SP-303 sampler for drums and other sounds, but has nowadays assembled a three-piece band to strengthen the live performance.

Wouter van Veldhoven Ambient, DIY electronica, instrumental (NL) – presented by Gaudemaus Wouter van Veldhoven uses his strange and vast collection of second hand materials to (re-) create instruments and recording techniques of his own. With cans, cigar boxes, broken radios, toy instruments and
modified tape recorders he ‘builds’ organically mesmerizing and tranquil compositions which in their nature are lo-fi and experimental, and allow your thoughts to wander off into places you didn’t even know could exist. In his own words, he uses old means to create new music. More info on page 24
Young Fathers Alternative hip-hop, lo-fi R&B (SC) When these three chaps emerged from a damp and dark Edinburgh basement, they surprised the world with something unlike anything we heard before. They combine structural elements of beat, rap and pop songs with reggaeton, electronic music, indie pop and traditional African music with a heavy emphasis on percussion and dark bass tones. In fact, the name Young Fathers represents their eagerness for innovation: to produce something so new and unique, there is no spiritual father let alone a name for.

ZZZ’s Experimental, post-punk, noise (US) All-girl trio ZZZ’s from Japan used to be in a softball team together before they started the band, and a similar dedication and discipline is reflected in their music. They have an air-tight live reputation and a philosophy that aims to produce unusual arrangements and sounds using a conventional set-up of just guitar, bass and drums. It leaves you wondering how these simple ingredients can create such a powerful and bizarre sound, which at times feels almost industrial, like a big noisy machine steamrolling over you.

and critics, but paves his own path wherever that may take him. This has given him the freedom to venture into pop, folk, roots and indie rock, while his body of work maintained a consistent level of emotional and artistic authenticity throughout, making him one of the most cared for and critically acclaimed artists around today. Destroyer Indie pop, singer-songwriter (CA) Dan Bejar (a.k.a. Destroyer) will return to Le Guess Who? to perform an exclusive solo set with a selection of his own material from the last 20 years. This will be one of just a hand full of shows through Europe, a mini-tour intended as a celebration of his career up until this point. Eric Copeland Experimental, psychedelic noise (US) By patching samples and beats together, Eric Copeland creates his own chaotic and confusing labyrinth he sometimes seems to have made just for himself to enjoy. With a tendency to disintegrate his samples beyond any recognition, his music becomes an entirely new kind of psychedelic. At times his beats can be quite hectic and filled with noise and filth, while some of his other tracks are far more approachable. But surprisingly it all fits perfectly in line with the rest of his repertoire, making you wonder if Copeland is some sort of creative genius that sees and hears things oblivious to most others.
Föllakzoid Krautrock, psychedelic rock (CL) Föllakzoid are nested in the krautrock end of the psychedelic spectrum. When they first started playing together they would jam non-stop, supposedly taken over by a hypnotic state while not saying a word for two hours straight. Föllakzoid guitarist Domingo García-Huidobro explains

Glenn Jones Acoustic folk, instrumental (US) Glenn Jones is a rare breed of guitarists; through endless playing he has mastered his instrument in such a way that his technical expertise and expressive playing enable him to tell stories without phrasing a single word or lyrical line. Using traditional country blues fingerpicking techniques, Glenn Jones operates in true American Primitivism style. You might know Jones as the leader of instrumental rock band Cul de Sac, but with his solo recordings Glenn Jones has developed a remarkable voice of his own, conveying a wide range of emotions without saying a word. Hanni El Khatib Blues rock, garage rock, singer-songwriter (US) Hanni El Khatib grew up in San Francisco as the son of Palestinian and Filipino immigrants and developed an early fascination for the American pop culture of the 50’s and 60’s. This fascination later caused him to be musically influenced by early rock and R&B pioneers, shaping his own sound by mixing 50’s blues with garage rock, folk and doo whop. “Knife fight music” he calls it. Being an avid skater himself, Hanni was still working as a creative director for skateboard fashion label HUF as he first started performing music on the side within San Fran’s skateboarding scene.

Mad Professor Dub reggae (GY) Nael Fraser earned his nickname of Mad Professor in his preteens due to his fanatical interest in electronics. So it may come as no surprise that he would later become a disciple of Lee “Scratch” Perry and develop himself as one of the leading producers in dub reggae’s second generation, helping the genre make the transition into the digital age. You could even say his space-age tracks revolutionized the genre, using electronic productions to add more layers and ingredients of sounds than anyone who came before him, creating a unique and unheard of sound of own.
Matt Elliott Folk, experimental (US) As a child, Matt Elliott was first drawn to music after hearing an orthodox Russian choir. He was fascinated that the grievous tones of this music alone could bring a man to tears. Eventually this inspired him to start working in a record shop as a teenager, and later join

different bands. Up until 2001 Elliott produced and recorded electronic music as The Third Eye Foundation, collaborating with artists including Yann Tiersen and Mogwai. Today Elliott releases records under his own name, exploring and embracing his earliest influences from orthodox Russion folk music.

Michael Chapman Singer-songwriter, folk (UK) When former art and photography teacher Michael Chapman couldn’t afford the admittance to get into a pub on a rainy night, he told the doorkeeper he would play the guitar for half an hour just so he could get in and didn’t have stay outside in the rain. They offered him a job for the rest of the summer and he’s been at it ever since. His uniquely English melancholic perspective, emotive guitar style and sharp lyrics are those of a real songwriter who has lived a real life and all that entails. More info on page 25
Moonface Dark pop, indie rock (CA) Multi-instrumentalist Spencer Krug may already have been one of the busiest people in indie rock, being the pianist, singer and songwriter for Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown, along with half a dozen other collaborations. But in 2010 he decided this still wasn’t enough to satisfy his creative urges and started Moonface as a solo project, focussing on moody compositions and melodious experiments. Although he has since collaborated with other artists to record his music, Krug will return to his purest form and perform solo as Moonface.

MV & EE Freakfolk, psychedelic pop (US) Matt Valentine (MV) and Erika Elder (EE) do not just make music together, they make a lot of music together. A quick count will add up to 32 album since 2001, and that’s probably not even all of it. And you can hear that each of their releases is produced with love and devotion, which is not surprising given the fact that MV and EE are also partners outside of their musical career. They describe their own style as “lunar ragas”, combining folky psychedelia with I ndian influences. The band features a rotating cast of additional musicians, which also explains the unconstrained quality that these records hold.
Om Stoner metal, psychedelic rock (US) Slow, dense rhythms lay the heavy foundation for mostly undefinable monotone vocals. Together they form mantra-like songs which in structure resemble Tibetan chants, making the band’s connection to Eastern ideology complete. The band’s name is a reference to the Hinduistic concept of

“Om”, which is a word to represent the natural vibration of the universe. As if the universe doesn’t vibrate enough on it’s own, Om’s music will send soggy, hypnotic waves into space that will make the universe’s foundations tremble like never before.
Terakaft Malinese desert blues, tranceblues (ML) In the Malinese desert the entire kosmos is reduced to only a few elements. While the sun and sand scorch you during the day, the stars guard over you at night. It has been like that for centuries, and will stay that way day in, day out. In a similar repetitive fashion, the traditional guitar patterns and percussion of Terakaft will bring you in a hypnotized trance-like state and transport you there. And you know you’re in good hands: founding member Kedou is a celebrity in his own land, known for his part in the history of the rebellion as well as his musical contributions in Tinariwen and Terakaft.

The Holydrug Couple Psychedelic rock (CL) The Atacama desert, high in northern Chile, houses 42% of the world’s space telescopes. With Earth’s best vantage point for watching the stars and space on your doorstep, it may be no surprise that the psychedelic rock scene in Chile is thriving with acts like Föllakzoid and The Holydrug Couple. Just like it can’t be a coincidence that the latter is abbreviated as THC. This duo produces a meandering, bluesy sound heavy on repetitive reverb-laden guitars and ditto vocals, which seem to carefully craft mountains of sound as high as the Andes. They build their melodies layer by layer, finely detailed and with painstaking precision.
Theo Verney Fuzzy psychedelic garage (UK) This Brighton-based friendly geezer is on the brink of making a name for himself. He’s been in and out of bands for quite some time now, but decided it was now time to make music on his own. And that’s exactly what he did: he wrote, played, re-

corded and produced everything you hear on his debut EP himself, every last grimy bit of it. Because although his friendly charisma might set you off, with a Gibson SG in his hands he becomes a garage rock powerhouse with his own recognizable though versatile style and sound.

TRAAMS Post-punk, indie rock (UK) The story of how these three friends unsuspectingly met and formed a band in the summer of 2011 will give hope to any frustrated young aspiring musician-to-be. They first met at the local club night singer/guitarist Stuart Hopkins used to run and DJ at. They bonded over their similar taste in music and soon wrote their first song during their first rehearsal together. Using a phone to record their first demos, this joyous and noisy trio has since left the dark corners of their home town behind and are now spreading their Krautrock inspired post-punk one broken string at a time.
Wooden Shjips Psychedelic, drone rock (US) Wooden Shjips are one of the most important and celebrated psychedelic bands of today. They tap into guitarist/vocalist Johnson’s fascination for books that remain unread for decades, impenetrable albums and oddity bundles of poetry to create their own spaced-out and deliberately obscure mix of droning organs, fuzzy guitars and hypnotic rhythms, in honor of those lost gems of creative expressions. With vast oceans of fuzz, echo and feedback it’s easy to get lost in their music, making the listener feel like they’re endlessly floating around in space with nothing else to do but to dig deeper into the exploration of their own mind.

Yo La Tengo Indie rock, dream pop (US) Yo La Tengo are one of America’s most cherished and respected bands. In almost three decades they’ve earned the classification as “the quintessential critics’ band”, celebrated for their creative drive and diverse palette of sounds and textures. The band’s career is as impressive as it is diverse: Yo La Tengo has released thirteen studio albums, a film score, did a Simpsons theme, portrayed the Velvet Underground in the 1996 film “I Shot Andy Warhol”, performed as the backing band for Ray Davies on one of his tours and donated hundreds of thousands to charity by creating their very own holiday tradition of playing a series of yearly Hanukkah shows.
