Exceptional Union, Exceptional Experience

Sports President

Candidates The Sports President champions all things sport within the Students' Union and the university. As well as ensuring sports are on the agenda at regular Representative Committee meetings, the Sports President chairs the Sports Executive and Club Captains meetings, helps to organise Varsity and meets regularly with the ARC staff to discuss sporting issues.

Vote Sebastian for Sports President.  Lobby the University for a re-structure of the sports membership fees.  Campaign for a Team Leicester only gym.  Push for better University sports facilities i.e. redevelopment of the running track at manor road and the installation of a 3g all weather pitch.  Open up the potential for more sponsor opportunities for all clubs, and secure the backing of a main team University of Leicester sponsor.  Better engagement with University sports clubs.

Previous university sporting experience: 2013/14 Men’s Rugby Union Club Captain 2014/15 Men’s Rugby Union Club President 2 years experience playing BUCS rugby for the University 2 years involved within intramural sport at the University (football, cricket & IMS rugby sevens) Having been a member of the Men’s rugby union committee for a year, I have established a rapport with both the sports development office in the students union and the sports and recreations office in the university. Having seen the role that Sam Rowbotham has undertaken this year, I have strong understanding of the position and the responsibilities involved. Thank you for taking the time to read my manifesto. Sebastian Goodhew Candidate for Sports President 2014/15.

Patrick Conboy Sports President Manifesto The progression of the universities sport should be a primary focus of the university and the union. Participants and Committee members should have it so the admin side of participating is made as easy as possible so that more focus can go into competing, and this comes through having an efficient body controlling these elements for them. This efficiency can be achieved by having thorough planning and excellent communication between the Arc and captains. If voted, I’d aim to make organising transport and fixtures as easy as possible by increasing number of ways and frequency of contact with the relevant people, so that they can focus on running successful and enjoyable clubs. With this efficiency would come the opportunity to push for an increase in performance and participation, and thus an improvement in the current BUCS standings. Over the 2013/14 season, Leicester is currently placed at 50th. To finish there at the end of the year would mark an improvement of 14 places on the 2012/2013 result. I believe that expanding and improving the current coaching staff available would allow this positive trend to continue, making the most of the talent available at the university. This can be done by allowing players to confidentially (if they wish) give feedback on how they feel the coaching is going, so that they feel the y can have an effect on team performances. In general, they should be allowed to make suggestions on anything they feel is significant, like ways they could save money as a club or particular inconveniences they find. These things, along with creating ties with local clubs, would enhance the focus and performance of our teams to enable an improvement in BUCS over coming years, as well as continuing our thorough domination at varsity. So my aims as president would be to make it easier to participate and thrive in university sport, whether in BUCS, local league or intramural. With experience in a vast range of sports, ranging from rugby to Taekwondo, at levels varying from school to national, I am well aware of what participants want. I am very comfortable in positions of leadership, having had a number to date, and would take on the responsibility with enthusiasm. To be open to ideas whilst bringing eagerness to the sports body, meeting problems with a proactive attitude, is essential in providing students with the sports service they need. I’m confident that I can bring these qualities to the position in a manner fitting to what is required. Regards, Paddy Conboy

Kyfer Stewart I’ve been a member for the Boat Club for three years. In that time I’ve learnt a lot about sports at this University, mostly good, but some bad. I don’t want to be the Sports President because I think it sounds good, I want to be your president to improve the service that is brought to you and the one I experience as well. During the previous year I’ve been both Novice Women’s Coach and Social Sec, hard work but well worth the time I have put in. I understand the pressures of performing and training to the high standard required by BUCS, while also seeing that the social side of sport is integral to the experience you have within a club. Sport at a university like ours requires dedication, this dedication should be better recognised alongside our academic achievements, employers value it and the University should too. There are 5 main areas in which I believe sport at Leicester could be improved. 1) Funding – the system from which clubs are funded needs to be operated with better transparency and clarity. Funding should be given stability over longer periods so clubs can plan longer term. Even though committees change yearly, this doesn’t mean clubs can’t have a solid direction. 2) Development – Clubs should be given greater assistance in creating development plans and should be encouraged to make sure they have future committees in mind when creating them. If sport at Leicester is to grow, it needs to be built on a solid foundation. Drop in sessions should be held for clubs, meaning that clubs aren’t always needing help from the ARC. 3) Intramural Sport – the intramural system in the University should be built on, there should be enough sport available for those who want to take part. Sport should be for everyone. Clubs should be given greater incentives to help organise such events. 4) Recognition – Sport should be given greater

recognition within the University. Little to nothing relating to Team Leicester is anywhere in the Students Union. Time and effort put into clubs should be given the recognition it deserves. 5) Improvement – Clubs that don’t achieve well at BUCS events and in other competitions shouldn’t be allowed to just get worse. Greater investment needs to be given to every team improving the overall Team Leicester brand and the reputation of Leicester itself.

If I were the sports president, I would be happy for people to contact me personally with any issue they have within sport. Issues usually need sorting quickly and clubs should have several options for help. Basically, I believe sport at this university needs to be better represented, not just to the university, but to students themselves.

Exceptional Union, Exceptional Experience

Distance Learner and Part time Students Officer

Candidates Distance Learner and Part Time students make up over half of registered students at the University of Leicester, but just because they're not on campus everyday doesn't mean the Students' Union isn't here for them. The Distance Learner and Part Time Students Officer makes sure that out of sight doesn't mean out of mind, and that the Students' Union offers the services and support that Distance Learner and Part Time students need.

Vote Robert Greenhill #1 Distance Learning and Part Time Officer!

Who? I’m Robert Greenhill, second-year BA Humanities and Arts, following the part-time Certificate in Modern British History at Vaughan College. Captain of the University Challenge Team, member of History and Politics societies, impediment to the talents of LUTheatre...

Why? Part Time and Distance Learners could use an advocate able to represent them from personal experience – one who is passionate about promoting and defending part-time education, who understands the particular benefits and distinct challenges of returning to learning.

Experience? I’ve been a Course Rep for four years; member of both Union Council and Student Experience Enhancement Group for two, and was awarded Course Rep of the Year for 2013. I was also a delegate to the NUS Course Rep Conference earlier this year.

Platform? None. By which I mean my own ideas and opinions are entirely subordinate to those of the people I hope to represent. I’m from Leicester and unapologetically partisan about the University. For me, that means making the system work as well as possible through active engagement and feedback between students, Union and University for the benefit of all.

Disabled Students’ Officer

Candidates The Disabled Students' Officer is the key point of contact for disabled students, and represents their needs and opinions to the Representative Committee and the Executive Team. The Disabled Students' Officer ensures the rights of disabled students are protected, promotes the involvement of disabled students in all Students' Union activity and is the lead delegate to the NUS Disabled Students' Conference. Please note: To vote for Disabled Students Officer, you have to self identify as a disabled student.

Vote Stephen GREEN for Disability Officer Please vote for me as I believe I can represent the lives of disabled students on a basis that promotes a disabled friendly environment and discourages ableism. As Vice President of the Mathematics Student Staff Committee, Peer Supporter, Noether House President and Course Rep, I have a wide range of experience with communicating with people and dealing with their concerns regardless of the situation. With my connections with the Access Ability Centre, I have first-hand experience of the concerns disabled students have with the current system. If voted in, I will promise to deal with these concerns as thoroughly as possible to ensure that everyone can make the most out of their University experience without fear of discrimination. My campaign policies can be summed up with:

Guaranteed to respond to ableism with a Zero Tolerance policy Represent students and their proposals and act to improve the quality of access across the University.

Excellent links with the Access Ability Centre that allows everyone’s needs to be met regardless of nature of disability.

Each student will have their concerns dealt with as a priority and solutions will be integrated into the University so no such problems will happen again

Not happy with current provision? Vote Stephen Green today!

Hi I am Craig Mitchell-Powell I am running to be your disabled students officer

The reason for this because I believe this union this university and society as a whole does not reflect or even attempt to reflect a society where there are equal opportunities for those who are ‘normal’ and those like me and you who are not in the predefined category of normal. The word equality may be banded about but often it is often meaningless. I am standing in this election as I believe that change is not just needed it is long overdue. I believe that the community of disabled students wherever or not they self-ascribe to be being disabled which I may remind those who ridicule us is not by choice but by circumstances outside of our control and thus as a community we need to work in a collective and progressive way to create future where the opportunities are the same for those who suffer from a learning disability to those who society dictates are ‘normal’. My experience for this role is that I am already a society disabled student’s officer I am a member of union council, earlier this year I had the utmost honour to go to NUS disabled conference and meet dozens of inspirational people and be a part of the creation of NUS policy which the disabled officer is mandated to implement. Furthermore I believe that for all the merit of the wider student body only disabled students can hope to understand the issues which effect those who are classified as disabled and the only way to deal with the many barriers which are thrown up for disabled community is to proactively campaign and fight against what society tells us we cannot achieve. Therefore I propose a plan of action, a plan for the future, a plan so that we the community which suffers the most from a society which fails to understand what their actions lead severe and unfair consequences for those whom often struggle to speak out. Therefore I plan to bring about change for a better society for a better university for better future which is created together.

I pledge to tackle mental health discrimination on campus to do this I pledge that, in the students union there will be a designated safe space for students with anxiety issues and equality training for all members of staff.

More accessible fresher’s events and sports societies which cater to the needs of disabled for example for example a sports or activities team for students who suffer from developmental coordination disorder. Not many private landlords take in to consideration students with severe mobility issues therefore A housing accreditation scheme is so disabled students know where to turn when looking for accessible housing but also affordable housing. So students with moderate to serve mobility issues may not have to live Oadby for the duration of their time at UOL A disabled course representative for every course so that the support you’re supposed be getting in your courses is universal and you’re not being short changed by the university even more than you already are, this means that much like a course rep there are individual officers who are elected for the retrospective courses who are able to deal first hand with the issues which students raise. Disabled students often are underrepresented their views are not heard or not listened to therefore I propose a creation of a campaign group which proactively campaign for positive change and against those who would discriminate against us unknowingly or knowingly, in addition to this companies what have been proven to effect disabled students adversely have no place on campus. Hi, my name is Emily Harvey and I'm a second year currently studying history and politics. I would like to run to become LGBT+ Liberation Officer Please do not hesitate to email me regarding my manifesto at ejh45@student.le.ac.uk.

My AIMS/PLANS:  Now Out in Sport has been passed in Union Council, I want to continue developing this throughout the year!  More Gender Neutral facilities on campus, including changing rooms and bathrooms.  Focus on the ‘T’ and the ‘+’ of liberation, which are often under-represented in the LGBT+ community, including a ‘what is the +’ workshop.  Attend LGBTA Committee meetings regularly and ensure I work closely with them  Have more LGBTQ Speakers come unto the university

My Experience  I attended NUS LGBT Conference last year, and am attending again this year. This helped me gain experience of the NUS movement as well as how to create an effective campaign.  I am also Co-Chair of the University of Leicester LGBTQ Association, helping to organise a number of events throughout this year so far. I have already achieved a number of my Manifesto aims I made when running for Co-Chair, including making the Facebook Group Secret, and thus increasing privacy, increasing our online presence, creating closer links with Trade, helping run a Coming Out Workshop, and helping host Love Music Hate Homophobia, which raised over £700 for charity.  I volunteer regularly with LGBTQ organisations and charities, including Trade. This means I am increasingly sensitive about issues that affect individuals in the LGBT* community.  I have been a member of Union Council his year which has developed my skills of impartiality and an understanding of how the Student Union operates.

 Remain active in the LGBT+ wider community and in the fight for liberation.

 I will continue to add to this throughout the campaign!

Thank you for reading my manifesto! I had to whip this up really quickly but I will continue to add to this as the campaign continues!! VOTE EMZO!!!

MY AIMS: • BLACK HISTORY AWARENESS EVENTS • HOLD PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE FOR RACIAL INSENSITIVITY IN THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL • SET UP A STRONG NETWORK OF LEICESTER BAME STUDENTS TO FIGHT RACISM LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY • INCREASE AWARENESS OF THE NUS BLACK STUDENTS CAMPAIGN • GRASSROOTS PROTESTS AND CAMPAIGNS • INCREASE BAME PARTICIPATION AND VISIBILITY IN THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

THE VISION Our university has become synonymous with racism nationwide, and for good reason too. Despite a body of students that are 55% BAME, our entire executive team is white, notwithstanding the racial controversy from this year’s elections. The union should not be allowed to spout anti-racism rhetoric without standing up to racism when it is staring them in the face. BAME students need a louder voice in the union’s decision making. I want to reduce BAME WHO AM I? voter apathy because as long as our I am NOT a politician with ulterior union doesn’t reflect our motives demographic, WE ARE NOT A I study the history of racism in-depth DEMOCRACY. in American Studies I am a FEMINIST because racism intersects with SEXISM, ELITISM, and ABLEISM.
