Revise There is no ‘right way’ to revise; everyone is different, so try out different methods. Just as long as you choose the method that enables you to gain a solid grasp of key facts and consolidate your knowledge. Here are some tips you might find useful.
How to Study Make a revision plan. Plan your time carefully, assigning more time to subjects and topics you find difficult. Plan time off for activities which can be done out in the fresh air. Take a 5 or 10 minute break every hour. Keep yourself more alert by changing revision methods during a session. If you find it heavy going, change from one subject to another at ‘break’ time. Find a quiet place to study and make sure you are sitting comfortably. The Library may not be best for you! Everyone is different! You can still fit in time to exercise and relax for a bit; just plan your time accordingly.
Top Tip Don’t panic; think about what you can achieve, not what you can’t. Positive thinking is important!
Revising Make the best use of your time. Revise often; try and do a little every day. Make sure you have all materials to hand. Avoid studying in an area where there will be distractions. Use course notes and expand these – don’t just rely on these! Work through past question papers. Create memory aids such as diagrams or images. Write key facts/notes out and display these around the house. Write ideas and facts on to cards to use as ‘prompts’. Use different colours to emphasize points and make them stand out. Keep your revision notes organised. If you have a question or need to clarify something, contact your department. Share revision notes and go through questions with your peers.
Top Tip Set goals each day and try to do more than this to make yourself feel you’ve done more than you thought you would.
Last minute revision It’s never too late to start revising! Focus your time well and cover the topics that are most likely to come up. Keep calm and positive. Don’t stay up all night revising; being overtired will not help you to do your best! Focus on the notes you already have, don’t overstretch yourself. Avoid things like Red Bull which makes you crash in the end, eat bananas & natural foods that provide energy instead.
Dealing with exam nerves Exams are extremely stressful and it is incredibly important to stay focused, positive and above all calm about everything. You will do a lot better in the exam if you stick to this than if you feel stressed and are worried about it. Find out where and when it will take place. Find out how much time is allowed. Find out how many questions you need to answer. Think positively. Allow yourself some fun-time each day to relax. Take some time out to be by yourself just before the exam and think about the exam ahead of you. Eat sensibly – your brain cells need energy to function.
Top Tip If you are stressed before an exam try and do some activity to clear your mind and keep you calm.
Sitting the exam Check you have the right equipment with you before you leave the house. Get to the exam location in plenty of time. Look through the paper first and mark difficult questions/initial thoughts. Plan your responses if they are essay questions. Select the questions that will best enable you to demonstrate your knowledge to the examiner. Use all the information provided on the paper. If you have any questions during the exam, just ask! No question is a stupid question! Remain focused on what you want to achieve and stick to your own exam plan i.e. if someone finishes early, don’t worry, just stick to your schedule.
After the exam After the exam you will have plenty of time to wait before you get the results. There is nothing you can do to change anything that happened in the exam room, so try not to worry. What is done is done, just try to focus on your next exams if you have any. Don’t panic. Don’t compare your answers with those of other students – this can create negative feelings. Have some fresh air and food and take time to relax before you start revising for your next exams. Don’t rush to your textbooks to check your answers. Have some food and build up your energy again if you have further exams.
Top Tip If that’s your final exam! Celebrate!
