A Journal of Three Months’ Walk in Persia in 1884 By Captain John Compton Pyne In 1884 an obscure British soldier, having finished his tour of duty in India, decided to make a detour on his trip home in order to spend three months crossing Persia unaccompanied except for the local muleteers. Among his accoutrements he packed a small leather-bound sketchbook in which he not only wrote a journal but in which he also added accomplished and charming water-colour illustrations. The authors’ introduction contextualises this trip made in 1884 against the background of Persianate influence in British culture, and the general cultural background of late Victorian Britain is presented as the subliminal driver behind a young man’s desire to explore, and illustrate, an already discovered country – Persia. Marjan Afsharian gained her MA in the History of Art and Archaeology at SOAS. She currently works for The Encyclopaedia Islamica project at The Institute of Ismaili Studies, London. Russell Harris holds an MA in Oriental Studies from Balliol College, Oxford, and is an established translator of literary works from French and Arabic. He is a contributor to the The Routledge Encyclopedia of 19th Century Photography and The Encyclopaedia Islamica.

Proportional Systems in the History of Architecture A Critical Reconsideration In this collection of original essays, twenty-six leading scholars reconsider the long history of proportional systems across numerous periods and places, and from diverse methodological approaches including archival exploration, advanced laser scanning, and more. Prior to the advent of modern structural engineering, architects and builders used proportional systems to imbue their works with a general condition of order that was integral to their intertwined notions of beauty and structural stability. These mostly invisible intellectual frameworks ranged from simple grids and symbolic numbers, to sly manipulations of geometry and numbers that required privileged knowledge and arithmetical calculations to access. Since the origins of architectural history, proportional systems have served as objects of belief and modes of iconographical communication. Whether they are capable of fulfilling more tangible functions remains a matter of debate today, for this ancient and diverse belief system continues to infiltrate architectural thinking in subtle and sometimes surprising ways.

Matthew A. Cohen is a licensed architect and Professor of Architecture at Washington State University. He publishes on the history and theory of medieval and Renaissance architecture. His book, Beyond Beauty: Reexamining Architectural Proportion through the Basilicas of San Lorenzo and Santo Spirito in Florence (Marsilio, 2013), received the 2012 James Ackerman Award in the History of Architecture. Maarten Delbeke is Chair in the History and Theory of Architecture at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) at the ETH in Zürich. He publishes on the history and theory of art and architecture from the early modern period up to the present and is an architecture critic, and the founding editor of Architectural Histories.

Materials and Materiality of Aegyptiaca Romana

Tulou are traditional fortified multifamily dwellings prevalent in southern Fujian. In this volume Renyu Wang discusses aspects of Chinese tulou heritage management. He examines the tulou interpretation prevailing in southern Fujian. Based on building studies, oral history, genealogies and interviews, Wang tries to reconstruct a relatively complete landscape biography to describe the essential episodes of built environment evolution in the Hekeng River Valley.

Egypt beyond Representation develops and applies a new approach to study Aegyptiaca Romana from a bottom-up, Roman perspective. Current approaches to these objects are often still plagued by top-down projections of modern definitions and understandings of Egypt and Egyptian material culture onto the Roman world. This book instead argues that these artefacts should be studied in their own right, without reducing them from the onset to fixed (Egyptian) meanings.

This biography highlights the part non-tulou architecture and non-agricultural economic forms have played in the evolution of the settlement environment. It then discusses the regulations and laws and examines the roles of different stakeholders in the heritage framework concerning the use of local people’s built heritage. Finally he explores the possibility of reaching equilibrium among all the heritage players in the form of contracts, and offers some suggestions to the stakeholders getting involved in the tulou management issues.

Starting from a novel focus on the materials and materiality of a selection of stone Aegyptiaca from Rome, and by combining archaeological and archaeometric perspectives, this study shows that, while Egyptianness may have been among Roman associations, these objects were able to do much more than merely representing notions of Egypt.

This book is a study of the time and space, the calendar and the religion of the Ayuuk people (Oaxaca, Mexico). Time-space is a line that goes from top to bottom, where what happened is left below and what is about to happen will come from above.

This publication not only provides insight on the Naua worldview and the ethical values harbored in local communities, but also a deeper understanding of the religion and culture of Mesoamerica in general. The focus lies on contemporary Naua religion, specifically in the community of Santa Catarina Acaxochitlan, in the states of Hidalgo and Tlaxcala in Mexico.

The universe has four major directions: east, north, west and south, associated with red, white, yellow and black colors and with year chargers reed, flint, house and deer, respectively. The cosmos has three levels: overworld, face of the earth and underworld. The face of the earth coincides with the face of the sky, forming a sacred space called nääxwiiny-tsajpwiiny, the place where we live.

The analysis of the Naua historical and documentary record reveals the relationship, made of conflicts and adaptations, between two distinct visions of the world, the Mesoamerican and the Spanish.

El pueblo ayuuk es uno de los pueblos indígenas de México que ha preservado hasta hoy día gran parte de su patrimonio cultural y lingüístico. Este trabajo presenta un análisis de su concepción espacio-temporal, su sistema de cómputo del tiempo y su pensamiento religioso, los cuales rigen la vida social y espiritual de este pueblo. A casi 500 años de la invasión europea y el inicio de la colonización y la evangelización –aunadas las políticas asimilacionistas impuestas por el Estado mexicano sobre los pueblos originarios–, los ayuuk continúan consultando a sus sacerdotes y sacerdotisas sobre su calendario sagrado y siguen celebrando rituales en sus sitios de culto. Pero, a pesar de su exitosa lucha de resistencia durante los últimos cinco siglos ante los embates de la colonización, actualmente el pueblo ayuuk está padeciendo un proceso de desplazamiento lingüístico y cultural. Juan Carlos Reyes Gómez es ayuuk y hablante de la lengua del mismo nombre. Estudió lingüística en la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia y el Centro de Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social, en México. Últimamente ha concluido sus estudios de doctorado en la Facultad de Arqueología de la Universidad de Leiden, en los Países Bajos. El trabajo que aquí se presenta es su tesis doctoral. La serie Estudios Arqueológicos de la Universidad de Leiden (ASLU: Archaeological Studies Leiden University) data desde 1998. Reconstructing the Settled Landscape of the Cyclades

Current Issues in the Archaeology of a Sicilian Polis Over the past few years, the archaeological and architectural investigation of ancient Akragas (modern Agrigento) in Sicily has gathered new momentum. This book brings together various researchers who investigate the Greek period remains of Akragas, an ostentatiously wealthy city state that was politically powerful and culturally formative. The issues discussed range from methodological approaches and the interpretation of fresh field-data, to concerns of site maintenance and the reconstruction of monuments. The outcome is presented in thirteen contributions, arranged into sections on extramural survey, urban sanctuaries, housing, and on the suburban sanctuary at S. Anna. The contributors to this volume offer perspectives for further research on the monuments, finds, and contexts from ancient Akragas. These extend beyond strictly archaeological concerns, and as manifested by Agrigento’s status as a UNESCO world heritage site, are also of relevance to wider audiences.

The Islands of Paros and Naxos during the Late Antique and Early Byzantine Centuries The aim of this book is to offer a fresh approach to the history and archaeology of the Cyclades in Late Antiquity and the Byzantine Early Middle Ages in light of current archaeological investigations. It is an attempt to interpret human-environmental interaction in order to “read” the relationship between islands, settlements, landscapes and seascapes in the context of the diverse and highly interactive Mediterranean world. It offers an interdisciplinary approach, which combines archaeological evidence, literary sources, and observations of the sites and microlandscapes as a whole, using the advantages offered by the application of new technologies in archaeological research (Geographic Information Systems). The islands of Paros and Naxos are used as case-studies. The author traces how these neighbouring insular communities reacted under the same general circumstances pertaining in the Aegean and to what extent the landscape played a role in this process.

Natascha Sojc is professor for Classical Archaeology at the University of Augsburg. She held the Byvanck Chair of Classical Archaeology at Leiden University 2009-2014.

Konstantinos Roussos completed his Ph.D. research at the Faculty of Archaeology at Leiden University (2017). He is currently involved as Research Fellow in the “Amorium Urban Archaeology Project” at Anadolu University, Turkey.

Heritage and Rights of Indigenous Peoples is an important book that should find a wide audience. It represents an impressive product of both a substantial grant-funded initiative, and scholarly engagement with policy formulation in relation to the United Nations. There is no book that really competes with it; instead, I see it as potentially being used as a sourcebook in conjunction with classics such as Tuhiwai Smith’s Decolonizing Methodologies in a variety of disciplinary settings. It will be especially important as an intervention in the heritage sector, which at present consists of two main literatures, one by those who see heritage as something to be “developed” in an unambiguous way, and another that is critical of heritage practice (primarily coming from ethnographic but also some archaeological authors). The Travels of Pieter Albert Bik Writings from the Dutch Colonial World of the Early Nineteenth Century The unpublished writings of a Dutch colonial official, Pieter Albert Bik (1798-1855) are studied and contextualized in this book. The remarkable autobiographical manuscript of Bik, which is here presented in English translation with annotations, provides a unique glimpse of the wide horizons of the world of Dutch colonialism, tracing his many journeys in Europe, the Dutch East Indies and Japan as well as across the oceans in the first half of the nineteenth century. In this work, Mikko Toivanen draws a parallel between Bik’s colonial travels and the contemporary emergence of a new kind of travel within Europe, showing that the culture of colonial travel was intimately connected with notions of leisure and tourism being developed back home at the time. Mikko Toivanen is a historian of the cultures of nineteenth-century colonialism, currently at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.

he ‘discovered’ – which is also a colonial strategy. The beauty of ‘bounteous nature’ overwhelmed him, prompting him to write lyrical, aestheticising passages in which he painted with words. Sunsets, rainbows, vistas: they were all extolled by Junghuhn using an array of adjectives to present an unspoilt and ‘empty’ paradise, with the indigenous population merely serving as a backdrop. To counterbalance this dominant imagery it is crucial to tie it to another, as yet hardly explored perspective: the native one. It is fascinating to study travel texts by Indonesians as well. How did they perceive their country, where a small Dutch elite controlled several million inhabitants? To what extent do their narratives deviate from those of the Dutch? Figure 6&7 The research into such travel texts is hampered by a linguistic barrier, because in contrast to the British situation, the indigenous people of the former Dutch East Indies did not or hardly ever use the language of their colonial rulers. A few exceptions notwithstanding, there are hardly any instances of ‘writing back’ to be found in the Dutch context. For this reason it is often claimed that research into the native perspective is impossible in the Netherlands. To give a voice to the muted population, Dutch and Indonesian literary scholars therefore need to join forces. What might be the benefit of reading such native texts from a postcolonial perspective? It requires research by an expert in both the Javanese and Malay languages to answer that question. We do, however, have some indication thanks to two such texts that have already been published in a Dutch translation. The first one, Op reis met een Javaans edelman (Travels with a Javanese Nobleman) appeared in 2013, being the account of Radèn Mas Arjo Adipati Tjondronegoro, who travelled in Java between 1860 and 1875. This work is an instance of ‘autoethnography’, to speak with Pratt, it is a text of one of the ‘colonized subjects to represent themselves in ways that engage with the colonizer’s terms’. Figure 8 On the face of it, the Javanese nobleman Tjondronegoro would appear to judge his country from the same colonial perspective as the Dutch traveller: he, too, looks down on and regards himself as far elevated above the common people. Being a noble prince, he is in a similar position as the Dutch. He is a great admirer of European culture: he appreciates its technological progress, the splendour of its colonial architecture, the orderliness of the road system set up by the Dutch.

There are, however, strategies in evidence in this travel text that are not to be found in the Dutch counterparts. By means of post-colonial analysis it can be established that Op reis met een Javaans edelman contains subtle criticism of the colonial ruler. Thus the Javanese nobleman is certainly responsive to the ordinary Javanese. They are obviously lower in social hierarchy than he is, but they are definitely not presented as invisible. The Dutch, moreover, are implicitly portrayed by him as an occupying power. On several occasions during his travels he stresses the presence of Dutch military forces and army barracks. In addition, the Javanese nobleman expresses a special interest in his own native culture, especially ancient culture, which fills him with pride. On his travels he inspects ancient Javanese funeral inscriptions and studies time-honoured native traditions and stories. It might be said that in this way, prompted by a nationalist consciousness, he reclaimed his own culture which had been marginalised by Dutch colonial presence. There is no outspoken criticism of the colonial situation to be found in Tjondronegoro’s work, though it does occur a few decades later in a travel account by the Javanese prince Radèn Mas Haryo Soerjosoeparto. His account was written in Javanese and published by the Commissie voor Volkslectuur (Committee for Popular Literature) in 1916. A modern Dutch translation appeared in 2014. Soerjosoeparto went to the Netherlands by ship in 1913 to study in Leiden. He, too, was impressed by Dutch culture and technology and the polished refinement experienced on board. However, like Tjondronegoro,

Health-related Votive Tablets from Japan Ema for Healing and Well-being Many Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan sell small wooden votive tablets (ema) which are meant to be left on a rack at the sanctuary. The reverse of these tablets offers space to send a self-written wish or personal thank you message to the enshrined deity or buddha. Their front usually has a pre-printed or hand-painted design that is indicative of the intended purpose. In this book hundreds of contemporary ema designs for health-related purposes are reproduced and placed into their religious and biomedical context. A final chapter explores why there are differences between these purposes and current epidemiological patterns. This is the first book in English on the long-standing tradition of ema.

Deze rondwandeling voert langs de plaatsen van de Leidse studietijd van Hugo de Groot (1583-1645). De Groot begon in 1594 als elfjarige jongen aan zijn studie aan de universiteit van Leiden en verliet de universiteit in 1598. Later werd hij als politicus en geleerde een van de bekendste Nederlanders uit de Gouden Eeuw. Heden ten dage wordt hij beschouwd als een grondlegger van het huidige systeem van internationaal recht, en om die reden zelfs als een van de belangrijkste intellectuelen uit de Europese geschiedenis. Deze sfeervolle wandeling voert langs de locaties waar hij woonde en studeerde, en geeft en passant een beeld van de stad, van personen met wie hij te maken had, en van het functioneren van de Leidse universiteit. Die universiteit (opgericht in 1575) had zich als centrum van vernieuwend wetenschappelijk onderzoek toen reeds een internationale reputatie verworven.

Grotius in Leiden: a Walking Tour This walking tour follows the locations of Hugo Grotius' (1583-1645) undergraduate years in Leiden. Grotius matriculated at Leiden in 1594 when he was 11 years of age, and left the university in 1598. Later, as a politician and as a scholar, he became one most wellknown Dutchmen from the Golden Age. Nowadays he is regarded as one of the principal founders of the current system of international law, and for that reason as one of the foremost intellectuals from European history. This scenic tour shows the places where he lived and studied, and gives an impression of the town, of some of the people around him and the workings of Leiden university at that time. Leiden university was established in 1575 and had by then already gained an international reputation as a centre of innovative science and scholarship.

Jan Waszink is docent en onderzoeker in het Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies van de Universiteit Leiden. The Future of the Postcolonial Past Beyond Representation In this discourse Elleke Boehmer shares her interest in new moves in the postcolonial field to direct attention to the communicative and interpretative ‘how’ rather than the themed ‘what’ of representation; to the process of reading and reception rather than the political ‘objects of difference’ that are represented in texts. It is this move beyond the phenomenology of ‘code’ that she believes maps the postcolonial future. Through a reinvigoration of postcolonial poetics and reader reception, it may be possible to shift our concerns away from the topic – and agenda – based discussions that have dominated the field to date and through which its politics have largely been understood. This approach recognises, radically for the field, that postcolonial writing has, on its own terms, like all writing, the power to shock, resist, overturn, subvert, and kick back against the various exoticising limitations of the postcolonial or decolonial condition.

The Fell Clutch [1] One sonic landmark upon which this book is based was encountered on a Sunday afternoon during May of 2007 in Lantaren/Venster – a venue for contemporary performing arts in downtown Rotterdam (the Netherlands). On the program was, besides Sean Noonan’s Brewed by Noon, The Fell Clutch.

The Field of Musical Improvisation The central aim of this book is to present a new approach to “the field of musical improvisation” (FMI), a theory which understands improvisation as a nonlinear dynamic and complex system. The study provocatively argues that during an improvisation more actants are “at work” than musicians alone: space, acoustics, instruments, audience, technicians, musical and socio-cultural backgrounds, technology, and the like all play a significant role. However, not all of these actants determine every improvisation to the same extent; some are more prominent and active than others in certain situations (periods, styles, cultures, as well as more singular circumstances). Therefore, the FMI theory will prove to be more than a theory dealing with improvisation “in general”. Rather, FMI emphasizes singularity: each improvisation thus yields a different network of actants and interactions, a unique configuration or assembly.

play The Fell Clutch – “No Memes, Mom” The Fell Clutch trio consists of Ned Rothenberg (clarinets, alto sax, shakuhachi), Stomu Takeishi (bass guitar), and Tony Buck (drums), this time featuring electric guitarist Marc Ribot. When, following a few tunes by the trio, Ribot enters stage and plugs his guitar into an old Fender Twin Reverb, an enormous cracking fills the hall. The amplifier is obviously broken. Fortunately, there are three more Twins on stage, already installed for Brewed by Noon. However, to the surprise of both the audience and the other musicians, Ribot decides to hold onto his broken amp. Instead of switching to a working Twin, he starts switching the broken one on each time he plays his guitar; conversely, he turns the amp off when he abstains from playing. He thus operates the on/off switch some twenty times per minute before the collective improvisation has reached a level of intensity that does permit the permanent drone of the amp to be an integral part of it. [2] The music, gradually evolving soundscapes frequently built up around repetitive, improvised patterns, was fascinating. And of course everyone knows that the instrument of an electric guitarist also includes the effects pedals and the amp. But a special situation is often needed to make one fully aware of the impact an amplifier has on the sonic results. The broken Fender Twin radically changed the development of the improvisation at hand. In other words, instead of remaining a seemingly neutral or inconspicuous transmitter of (prepared) guitar sounds, the amp turned into an important musical actant, without which the music would have taken a different direction. Suddenly, both the musicians and audience came to realize that a simple amplifier can determine to a great extent the course of an improvisation. Suddenly, the interaction between Ribot and the amplifier, or, more precisely, the interaction between Ribot, amplifier, and plug became the main event on stage. Suddenly, the three other musicians on stage were not interacting so much with Ribot as with a broken Fender Twin.

[3] With this concert, interaction, regarded as an important aspect of improvisation, at once received another meaning, an extra dimension. Unexpectedly I realized that the act of improvising takes place not only on a field where the musical and the social fuse, as Ingrid Monson writes (1996: 90). Besides humans, many more actors and

concept of Composition seem to accrue directly from commonly accepted ideas on improvisation. [3] The music that somehow underpins this theoretical framework is not ambitious, not of high quality, not played very well, and does not consist of really innovative and challenging musical ingredients. It is played by amateurs, by students of a music school in Rotterdam, by people who gather once a week, after their daytime jobs, to make music together. For these musicians, without exception only accustomed to playing the most well-known standards from The Real Book, I created a simple “composition” called “Intermezzo,” consisting of eight different motifs which can be played in any desired order, either after or layered on top of each other.

It is not compulsory to play all the motifs in one performance of “Intermezzo.” The choice and order of the fragments, as well as any possible repetition, are left to the discretion of the musicians themselves. All this produces the following effects: • There is no clear and a priori distinction between principal and sub- or accompanying themes; this can change even within one performance. • The binary opposite and hierarchical relationship between solo and accompanying instruments becomes less clear. More so than in mainstream jazz music, their function can alter in the course of a performance. • Beginning and rounding off are arbitrary to a great extent. There is no apparent opening theme that is repeated near the end in order to close the circle, as in most jazz standards. In theory, “Intermezzo” can be expanded infinitely. • The use of only one chord or harmony subverts the compelling linearity of the classical II-V-I progression, the basis of so much jazz music. In that sense, “Intermezzo” knows no development. “Intermezzo” is not a linear composition, but rather an associative network, a rhizome, opening up a principally infinite web of possible routes. One could call it unstable music, as it is in a constant state of evolution, a perpetual becoming, never solidified, never definitely fixed. This means that it is primarily the process of exploration, the continual discovery of various musical gestures and interactions, and not the finished product, that becomes most prominent. “Intermezzo” is meant to set out on a search that has no end, and thus, no goal. The musicians might not know where they are going until they get there. The outline of the project only emerges with any clarity as they progress with it (Cobussen 2002: “Intermezzo,” sections 4 and 5).

Marcel Cobussen is Professor of Music Philosophy and Auditory Culture at Leiden University. Cobussen is author and editor of several books and is editor-in-chief of the open access online Journal of Sonic Studies.

It is startlingly original in so much as it brings a philosophical/social understanding to the field of musical improvisation. I’ve not really encountered a work that does this so imaginatively and thoroughly.
