Why Biodiversity Loss is Not a Disaster Everyone knows that species go extinct and biodiversity decreases. It seems obvious that this loss might have disastrous consequences. Maybe because of a cascading effect we will end up in a barren moonscape – and if that does not happen, we at the very least remain dependent on biodiversity for food, health and well-being. This essay tries to remove some fear; there are no reasons to believe that biodiversity loss will cause any kind of disaster. Nature is not like a machine that stalls if parts are being removed: a collapse of nature is not looming. And although specific species are required for various goods and services, this cannot be generalized to biodiversity overall. In this book Bas Haring argues that biodiversity loss is a pity, but not a disaster.

Bas Haring is a philosopher, professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Leiden University and author of a much awarded popular science book on the theory of evolution (Kaas en de evolutietheorie). He is called ‘the people's philosopher’ and was awarded the “Clear Language Prize” for being the clearest Dutch academic.

Atlas of Material Life Northwestern Europe and East Asia, 15th to 19th century Large-scale comparative economic history of westernmost and easternmost Eurasia is of importance for the understanding of global history. The book provides a description of material life in Northwestern Europe and East Asia, for the period from the late fifteenth to the late nineteenth centuries, with a focus on developments in Great Britain and the Dutch Republic on the one hand and China and Japan on the other hand. Like an atlas it provides information, in an accessible format, on the main characteristics of the economic landscape of this period. Maps, tables, graphs and figures are a prominent and integral part of the book. It shows the constraints to which all pre-industrial economies were subjected because of their dependence on organic natural resources but also the different ways in which the societies discussed dealt with those constraints. To provide a better understanding of this economy of limited possibilities, the final chapter of the book is devoted to the emergence of modern economic growth in Western Europe.
Peer Vries was professor for Global Economic History at the University of Vienna from 2007 to 2016. Since 2016, he is Honorary Research Fellow at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. He published widely on global economic history and on the Great Divergence.

Being a Slave Histories and Legacies of European Slavery in the Indian Ocean Being a Slave brings together scholars and writers who try to come to terms with the histories and legacies of European slavery in the Indian Ocean. This volume discusses a variety of qualitative data on the experience of being a slave in order to recover ordinary lives and, crucially, to place this experience in its Asian local context. Building on the rich scholarship on the slave trade, this volume offers a unique perspective that embraces the origin and afterlife of enslavement as well as the imaginaries and representations of slaves rather than the trade in slaves itself. From Cape to Batavia, slavery is understood as a diffuse practice. This approach helps unearth 18th and 19th century experiences of being a slave in the Indian Ocean world, but also sheds light on continuities in bondage into the present. Contributors face an often hostile archive to extract traces of the lived experience of slavery in court records, petitions or private letters. They also listen to local voices by prying unexplored primary sources such as oral histories, memories and objects.
Alicia Schrikker is Senior Lecturer in colonial and global history at Leiden University. She works on everyday colonialism in the Indian Ocean throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, through a focus on sites and moments of exchange and interaction. Ishikawa Sanshirō’s Geographical Imagination Transnational Anarchism and the Reconfiguration of Everyday Life in Early Twentieth-Century Japan In modern Japan, anti-establishment ideas have related in many ways to Japan’s capitalist development and industrialization. Activist and intellectual Ishikawa Sanshirō exemplifies this imagination, connecting European and Japanese thought during the first decades of the twentieth century. This book investigates the emergence of a strand of non-violent anarchism, reassessing in particular the role of geographical thought in modern Japan as both a vehicle of political dissent and a basis for dialogue between Eastern and Western radical thinkers. By tracing Ishikawa’s travels, intellectual interests and real-life encounters, Nadine Willems identifies a transnational ‘geographical imagination’ that valued ethics of cooperation in the social sphere and a renewed awareness of the man-nature interaction. The book also examines experiments in anarchist activism informed by this common imagination and the role played by the practices of everyday life as a force of socio-political change.
Nadine Willems holds a DPhil in History from the University of Oxford and teaches at the University of East Anglia. She specialises in the intellectual and cultural history of modern Japan, with a focus on East-West transnational exchanges and political dissension. She has also translated Japanese proletarian poetry.

Bureaucrats of Liberation Southern African and American Lawyers and Clients During the Apartheid Era Bureaucrats of Liberation narrates the history of the Southern Africa Project of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a civil rights organization founded in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy. Between 1963 and 1994, the Southern Africa Project connected lawyers from Namibia, South Africa, and the United States. Within the Project’s network, activist lawyers exchanged funding resources, provided logistical support for political trials, and mediated new voting and governmental systems. The Project’s history provides a lens into twentieth century geopolitics tied to anti-apartheid, decolonization, Cold War, and movements agitating against white supremacy. In doing so, it pays careful attention to the Project’s different eras, beginning with US Executive Branch officials helming the effort and evolving into a space where more activist-oriented attorneys on both sides of the Atlantic drove its mission and politics.

The Company Fortress Military Engineering and the Dutch East India Company in South Asia, 1638-1795 The remains of Dutch East India Company forts are scattered throughout littoral Asia and Africa. But how important were the specific characteristics of European bastion-trace fortifications to early modern European expansion? Was European fortification design as important for early modern expansion as has been argued? This book takes on these questions by studying the system of fortifications built and maintained by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in present-day India and Sri Lanka. It uncovers the stories of the forts and their designers, arguing that many of these engineers were in fact amateurs and their creations contained serious flaws. Subsequent engineers were hampered by their disagreement over fortification design: there proved not to be a single ‘European school’ of fortification design. Johan Huizinga (1872-1945), one of the founders of cultural history, ranks among the most influential Dutch thinkers of the twentieth century. He produced a body of writing on subjects that range from medieval art to the mechanization of modern America. The publication of Herfsttij der Middeleeuwen in 1919 brought him international renown, and contributed to the multiple nominations he received later in his career for the Nobel Prize in Literature, a rare accolade for a professor of history. Among his other important works are Erasmus (1924), In the Shadow of Tomorrow (1935) and Homo Ludens (1938). He died in internal exile, a few months before the liberation of the Netherlands.
Diane Webb has translated a wide range of literature on art-historical and historical subjects, including Ruusbroec: Literature and Mysticism in the Fourteenth Century by Geert Warnar, as well as Herman Pleij’s Dreaming of Cockaigne: Medieval Fantasies of the Perfect Life and Colors Demonic and Divine: Shades of Meaning in the Middle Ages and After (for which she was awarded the Vondel Prize for Dutch Translation in 2005).
Anton van der Lem, a leading expert on Huizinga, has written or edited many articles and books, including the recently published Rereading Huizinga. It was at his suggestion that Leiden University Press decided to publish this first full-text translation from the original Dutch into English, and he set the standard with his Dutch centenary edition of Herfsttij. Pearls of Meanings Studies on Persian Art, Poetry, Ṣūfīsm and History of Iranian Studies in Europe Pearls of Meanings offers a collection of essays by J.T.P. (Hans) de Bruijn, a leading scholar in the field of Persian Studies, in which essential domains of Persian culture such as poetry and Sufism are analyzed in an exemplary fashion. Een sublieme nalatenschap De erfenis van Willem Bilderdijk Willem Bilderdijk (1756-1831) was de grootste dichter van zijn tijd, maar ook een dwarsdenker in eeuwig verzet tegen de tijdgeest, en een zonderlinge hypochonder, die tientallen jaren leefde met ‘de voet in ‘t graf’, zoals hij het zelf uitdrukte. Het universele genie Bilderdijk was een van de laatste Europeanen die nog over alle kunsten en wetenschappen een deskundige mening kon geven. Dat deed hij dan ook graag, en dat werd hem lang niet altijd in dank afgenomen. Naast talloze felle tegenstanders kende Bilderdijk ook een groot aantal bewonderaars. Al tijdens zijn leven begonnen zij gedrukte publicaties, documenten, brieven en afbeeldingen van en over Bilderdijk te verzamelen. Ook een haarlok van de grote dichter, zijn dodenmasker of een gipsen afdruk van zijn schrijfhand werden gewilde verzamel objecten. De collecties van de twee grootste verzamelaars kwamen uiteindelijk terecht bij de Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde te Leiden en bij de Vereniging ‘Het Bilderdijk-Museum’ te Amsterdam. De neerlandici Rick Honings en Gert-Jan Johannes publiceerden tal van boeken en artikelen over literatuur- en cultuurhistorische onderwerpen, onder meer over Bilderdijk. Zo schreef Scaligerhoogleraar Honings, samen met Peter van Zonneveld, de Bilderdijkbiografie De gefnuikte arend (2013). Honings en Johannes zijn beiden bestuurslid van de Vereniging ‘Het Bilderdijk-Museum’.

Changes in the Cultural Landscape and their Impacts on Heritage Management A Study of Dutch Fort at Galle, Sri Lanka This 47th volume of the ASLU series focuses on the practical challenges of managing a World Heritage listed historic city in a South Asian context. The Indian Ocean island of Sri Lanka’s Galle Fort, a walled town, identified as the best-preserved colonial fort in South Asia, is the subject of this study. The book analyses the costs and benefits of the fort’s World Heritage recognition to its local urban community and to the colonial fort itself, as a monument. It shows how thirty years of the World Heritage project at Galle Fort changed a once small seaside walled town with dilapidated colonial buildings into a tourist hot-spot and prime real estate, also changing the lives of its inhabitants. The work addresses the range of impacts of this process such as gentrification, real estate pressures, and urban regeneration in a balanced way. It argues that the best practises of participatory and people-centred approaches of managing urban heritage at the global level are slow to progress at the local level. By highlighting the strong emotional attachment of local residents towards their landscape, the book proposes seeing the residential urban community as ‘preserver’ of the historic city. While seeing the World Heritage listing of Galle Fort optimistically, the book encourages the use of the World Heritage emblem for the well-being of local residents, who bring life to these landscapes.

De la gloria al olvido Estudio arqueológico de la primera ciudad española en la Tierra Firme de América: Santa María de la Antigua del Darién Santa María de la Antigua del Darién was the first city that the Spanish founded in the ‘Tierra Firme’ of America in 1510. It became the capital of the territory of Castilla del Oro until the founding of Panama City. A few years after the transfer of the capital to Panama, Santa María de la Antigua was gradually abandoned until in 1524 it was assaulted and burned by the indigenous people. The archaeological project in the place where Santa María de la Antigua del Darién was located, promoted by the Colombian Ministry of Culture and the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (Icanh), since 2013, has allowed to delimit the space of the city and it has brought to light housing floors, cobbled courtyards, streets, a blacksmith's workshop and fragments of indigenous and European material culture. The project has also revealed an important pre-Hispanic phase prior to the founding of the Spanish city. Based on these investigations, Santa María de la Antigua del Darién has been declared a site of cultural interest in 2015 and a National Archaeological Park in 2016. This book presents the results of a rigorous archaeological investigation in the Colombian northwest that was conducted with the stratigraphic method and unites extensive work with the community with a multidisciplinary approach.
Alberto Sarcina is an Italian archaeologist, with extensive experience in field work and an expert in stratigraphy and archaeological documentation. Since 2013 he is responsible for the archaeological investigation of the Santa María de la Antigua del Darién site (Colombia). He is professor of excavation methodology and works for the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History.

The Potters’ Perspectives A Vibrant Chronological Narrative of Ceramic Manufacturing Practices in the Valley of Juigalpa, Chontales, Nicaragua The work of Fernand Braudel (1949) should have revolutionized the way archaeology conceptualizes temporal scales and builds chronological narratives. Even though Braudel’s general views did impact archaeological theory deeply, his three different time-scales, together with insights into duration as the inner dialectic between different temporalities, remain neglected in archaeological practice. Nowadays, ceramic chronology building in archaeology still relies on two main variables: time-space and pottery styles. This book aims to challenge this paradigm and propose a new way for narrating vital chronologies. The point of departure for this endeavor consists of a longue durée geographical unit, the valley of Juigalpa, in central Nicaragua. Through a view of materials— and especially ceramics—as complex and embodied palimpsests, as the bundling of unfolding traces; a chronology including five different intervals based on ceramic technologies is presented, from the first traces of human practices in 300 CE through to the present.
Natalia Donner (PhD, Leiden University) is an Argentinian-Mexican archaeologist, whose work questions the epistemological and colonial foundations of Archaeology. She is lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities (Leiden University) and co-director of the project Darien Profundo (Panama), which explores the deep history of the land bridge of the Americas.

Designating Place Archaeological Perspectives on Built Environments in Ostia and Pompeii Spatial analysis on the basis of material culture has always been one of the mayor topics in archaeological research. Designating place analyses the urban space of Roman Ostia and Pompeii in different ways: geophysical analysis, spatial analysis, iconographic analysis and epigraphic analysis. This book is based on the work of Hanna Stöger, the Leiden scholar who died in 2018. Hanna’s work in Ostia was not finished and this book contains contributions from people who inspired her, people she worked with, people she inspired and people who were presented on sessions she organized. The part on geophysics contains new data on Ostia from teams from the University of Delft in the Netherlands and from Canada and Germany. The spatial analysis discusses mainly the pro and cons of the use of Space Syntacs, the computer program Hanna used to analyse Ostia with contributions from scholars from the United Kingdom, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands and the USA. The last two parts on iconographic and epigraphic analysis consists of articles by researchers from the Netherlands and Norway.

Hans Kamermans was associate professor at the Faculty of Archaeology at Leiden University. His research is in the field of computer applications in archaeology, in particular predictive modelling. He was involved in fieldwork in the Netherlands, England, France, Germany and Italy (the Agro Pontino survey and Ostia). L. Bouke van der Meer is retired associate professor in Classical Archaeology. He has published books and articles on Etruscan archaeology and language. He also did research in Ostia Antica (on the use of travertine and on the Domus Fulminata). His monograph Ostia speaks. Inscriptions, buildings and spaces in Rome’s main port appeared in 2012.

Rembrandt is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de stad Leiden. Hij werd er geboren, ging er naar school en begon er zijn carrière als een van de grootste schilders in de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Eenzelfde verbondenheid is er tussen Rembrandt en de Universiteit Leiden. Hij schreef zich daar op 20 mei 1620 in als student letteren en deed dat, zoals uit deze publicatie zal blijken, in februari 1622 nog eens. Die inschrijving en herinschrijving worden in de Universiteitsbibliotheek bewaard, samen met talloze andere bronnen over Rembrandts leven en werk. Bovendien bezit de bibliotheek tal van prenten en tekeningen van Rembrandt, en ook van zijn tijdgenoten.

In The Secret of Divine Civilization (1875) Abduʾl-Bahā supports the administrative and broader social reforms of Mirzā Hosayn Khān, but looks mainly for organic reform through the efforts of Iranian intellectuals to waken and educate the masses. In this work, Abduʾl-Bahā gives virtuous and progressive Islamic clerics a leading role among these intellectuals, indeed most of his appeals are directed specifically to them. A Traveller’s Narrative (1889/90) is an authoritative statement of the broad lines of Bahā’i social and political thinking. The Art of Governance (1892/93) was written as Iran entered a prerevolutionary phase, and ideas that we recognise today as the precursors of political Islam were spreading. It sets out the principles underlying the ideal relationship between religion and politics and between the government and the people.
