With the current weather conditions and plentiful rainfall, the above views of the Inverleigh Cemetery are quite breathtaking. The Shelford Cemetery is equally as fine a display of the same range of wildflowers. Thanks to Damien Baker for holding off with the mowing, Andrea Bolton for her photography skills, enabling this wonderful collage of colour for our front page.

INVERLEIGH PROGRESS ASSOCIATION meet in the
Inverleigh Public Hall
on the 3rd Wednesday of each month @7 :30pm (Except January)
VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME President: Hilary Hamilton Secretary: Luanne Thornton Treasurer: Tony Waayers Leigh News Editor: Peter Trevaskis
The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept meet in the Inverleigh Public Hall 0n the 4th Monday of each Month @ 8pm the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collec(Except December & January) tions. VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable President: Katrina Robson meetings, which you are welcome to attend.
Peter’s Editorial
Welcome for another month and I trust you are all Safe. Schools are back, restrictions are being lifted and we are adjusting to a new kind or normal. Our Public Hall has had a coat of paint and new signs for the Hall are being developed. A completely different year when it comes to Remembrance Day. Please refer to the article from Mal Johns as to how you may appropriately remember those who served and especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. LEST WE FORGET. On page 20 you can read about more members of our community and the volunteer work that they do throughout the district. If you know of someone doing volunteer work in the community, please send me a short article and any relevant pictures to include in this series over the next year or so. To be honest, my present list may take several years to get through and I'm sure there will others that haven't come to mind yet or that I don't know of. Until next month, I wish you all the best and remember, only 56 days till Christmas.
Heroes in Covid Times.
I don’t “DO” overwhelmed. Or at least I don’t do overwhelmed very well. It has been my role in life, up until recently, to assist other people to deal with overwhelming moments in their lives. Some two months ago I went to St John of God Hospital for a minor elective surgery. Now every surgery has a horrid list of things that might happen but rarely do happen. I spent two short days in hospital then came home. I saw the surgeon for follow up 3 days later and told him I didn’t feel quite right. He stated that I didn’t look well but the surgical site was good. He gave me his contact numbers and said to ring him if felt worse or if I had any concerns. Our daughter moved in to look after me post surgery and on Saturday night said that I looked dead. I felt terrible with hot and cold chills, confusion and a raging temperature. So on Melissas insistence I rang the surgeon. He met me at the front desk , pushed my wheel chair up to the ward. by this time I was unable to walk. I had 2 IV lines set up and started fluids and buckets of antibiotics and was scheduled for surgery early next morning. I woke up 24 hrs later feeling so unwell I wanted to go back to sleep and never wake up. I had multiple blood tests lots of pain killers, fluids and encouragement from the wonderful nursing staff, quite a few different doctors and of course my hand wringing, pacing surgeon. Because of these “Covid times” everyone had to wear masks and face shields which was so uncomfortable for them but still the staff were like angels of mercy whenever I was awake. Every time I did wake up I wished for death. Everything ached, I missed my family. No-one was allowed to visit. I always thought that having to deal with MS every day of my life for the last 30 plus years would have given me enough stamina to cope with anything. Wrong! The next day I was asked to sign some forms for the use of blood products. I signed and fell asleep again. When I next woke there was a nurse putting a bag of blood into my IV machine. I looked up at the blood flowing into my veins and became so overwhelmed with gratitude for the wonderful, considerate, generous, amazing person and people, that even

in these Covid times, were still selflessly donating blood. I spent two days having blood transfusions crying with gratitude for my newfound heroes. Blood donors saved my life, The blood and antibiotics prevented my organs breaking down from advanced Septicemia. When I came home I put a small post on facebook about my stay in hospital and that I was so grateful for blood donors. Some CFA friends in Melbourne who usually give blood gave again as they hadn’t done so for a while to top up supplies, apparently my health scare and use of blood was a reminder for them. My heroes as I said, are the selfless people who take time out of their lives, even in a Pandemic, and

continue to quietly donate a product they have made in their own body. They give their blood freely to save someone they will never meet or know. So everyone out there who is healthy please consider donating your blood so that someone you don’t know can regain their health or their life. I would begrateful for your effort as I am sure any recipient of a few drops of the good stuff would be. So look them up. Australian Red Cross Lifeblood 13 14 95 Susanne

Inverleigh Public Hall Has a Fresh New Look
We are very happy to announce that, with timely help from our community, painting has been completed on the three sections of the Inverleigh Public Hall planned to be done in 2020. Soon a new sign will be erected to finish off the new fresh look. Locals will know that the Inverleigh Hall Committee’s fundraising over the past few years has been directed towards painting the exterior of the hall. 2020’s Book Bazaar was expected to see us reach our goal so that work could commence. Then along came Covid-19, which reduced income from hirers and caused the Book Bazaar to be postponed, hopefully to be held in May 2020. At our August meeting, options included not proceeding at all, painting only a part, or seeking local support and a grant. We decided to turn to our community. We are most grateful to the following for their support towards the painting project: -the Bendigo Bank Bannockburn and Dis-
trict Connected Communities, which gave a grant of $5000; -the Inverleigh Leigh Valley Lions, which donated $1000; -the Inverleigh Hotel Sporting and Social Club Inc, which donated $1000; and -the Inverleigh Historical Society, which donated $500. Please support these groups in their endeavours, as they are public spirited and give not only money but volunteer effort to improve our communities. We sincerely thank them all for helping us to preserve and improve the Inverleigh Public Hall. If anyone would like to become involved in helping on the Inverleigh Public Hall Committee, or to be on our email list for when we are looking for help with specific projects, please contact: Christine Windle, Secretary, Inverleigh Public Hall, windlechristine@gmail.com, 0403 267 286
Remembrance Day 2020
Leigh News 5
Memorial Services in 2020 for our Service men and Service women who served in all areas of conflict and paid the ultimate sacrifice in many areas of Conflict, Peacekeeping, Disaster relief and Training situations have had many restrictions on these services over the year due to COVID-19 . On 11th November at 11.00am we pause to remember all those who served. Almost a million Australians served during the Second World War and millions more contributed to the War effort at home in Australia , this year we the commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Second Word War which changed Australia and set about a whole new way of life compared to pre-war years, while there will be no public Memorial Service at Inverleigh or the Monuments at Bannockburn, Teesdale and Shelford the Inverleigh RSL Sub-Branch will lay Floral tributes at the Monuments in the four townships. members of the community are also invited to lay Floral tributes during the day, another way to show Remembrance would be the placing of a floral arrangement at your residence front gate or doorway and pause in a silent tribute at 11.00am. Selling of Remembrance Day Poppies will be difficult due to social distancing rules but hope fully we may be able to place point of sale boxes at various shop outlets if we see a relaxing of the COVID-19 guidelines. Stay Safe, Mal Johns, President Inverleigh RSL Sub-Branch
Help the Historical Society Create a Record of the Covid-19 Times Thanks to the people who responded to the Inverleigh Historical Society’s call for items for our collection for our project - Life in Inverleigh and District under Covid-19. We are still looking for photos, written pieces, poems, slide shows, short videos, raps, and interviews to help us create a record of our experiences this year. Do you have any photos of: home schooling, signs re covid-19 around the town and district, people in masks, the sharing station set up in High St, social distancing, people using Zoom, covid-19 situations when shopping or eating?
Can you tell us how your groups coped? The CWA did zoom meetings with speakers – what did other groups do? What happened with the churches and with sports? What about local businesses? What new things did you and your family learn or do? The river track has become a highway for walkers – what else happened? How did you keep in touch? Please send contributions to: inverleighhistsoc@gmail.com. Christine Windle, 0403 267 286, Secretary, Inverleigh Historical Society

The handwritten caption in the shared photo album states “Stallholders, Me, Lottie, Ella, Mary”. I suppose we should be grateful for this much information as most people fail to name and date their photographs, and these days they are hidden away in telephones, or the cloud, to be lost to anybody but the owner. Not a lot of information to try and write an article for the Leigh News, however it is conveys People, Time and Place. Well “Me” is Isabella Berridge. Born 1904 in Inverleigh to William Samuel Berridge and Margaret Ann Haygarth. Isabel married Harold Victor Gready in 1930 and moved away, before returning in her later years, eventually celebrating her 100th birthday. This is an image from her photo album and the date on the previous photo is 1924 which gives an indication of which decade it was taken. After “Me”, it is a bit of guesswork. Lottie resembles Charlotte “Lottie” Roworth (nee Collins) whom I remember from the 1970’s but Charlotte was a common name from 1896 when she was born. “Ella” is another guess but it is likely to be Ella Morgan born 1904 and she had a sister “Mary” , again a common name, maybe some of the Morgan relatives could help in this identification. Mary is wearing glasses. But it is the image itself that is so interesting. One of the ‘stallholders’ has made matching costumes to fit the event, and they were probably worn
Photo: IHS Collection for other such fundraisers and Flower Shows. The white stockings; skirts with stripes or plain; piping on the blouses; the dainty, decorative aprons; headbands; the small boy “photobombing” the snap; add a sense of occasion. It could have been early in the day as they are still so tidy. The building in the background is the St Paul’s Sunday School and in a report in the Geelong Advertiser in January 1929, a queen carnival and fete was held to raise funds for necessary improvements to the church property. Thankfully such fundraisers were often reported in the newspaper and at this carnival Miss I Berridge was in charge of the sweet stall. Other stalls included produce, fancy, soft drink & ice cream, refreshment room, fish pond and a bran pie. Two local lasses were Queen of roses and Queen of Lilies and along with their Maids in Waiting raised funds at the fete. That evening there was a crowning ceremony for the highest fundraiser, followed by dancing. The Calendar for 2021 is now available from Liz McDonald (52651270) or Sonny Store priced at $12, and is another collection of district images suitable for articles next year. Covid19 allowing, the Historical Society hope to gather next year, to continue collating information about Inverleigh. Please spend some time naming your own photo collections, and share any that depict current events. It will be much easier for others not to have to guess the story in ninety years time. Liz McDonald

The photograph is of the First Saturday Pennant team that Inverleigh formed for the match against Bannockburn for season 2012. this was to be the commencement of many very successful pennant seasons in both midweek and Saturday competitions by Inverleigh with seven premierships and a variety of final appearances along the way to the current season of 2020. Inverleigh has never had a large list of members to draw on, which is evident that when we look at the photo six are still playing with the club John Henderson, David Seiffert, Vic Leach, Mark Coleman ,Joy Gray and Suzie Coleman, there are others who were involved as well but not in the original photo and also are still playing at Inverleigh. While Inverleigh is typical of many other small bowls clubs opposition teams are very impressed when playing at Inverleigh on what is achieved by such a hard working group, from
looking after the greens, providing afternoon tea , the cleaning and presentation of the complex and the garden surrounds ,refreshments at the bar all this is done voluntary and there many other areas where this is evident add to this our small band are friendly and hospitable to anyone who visits whether to play ,spectate or attending a social night or club event. In wrapping up Inverleigh has over the years had new members join and they too are enjoying their time at the club. New members either playing or social are always welcome and we are very family friendly so bring the children along. Bowls wise we are slowly getting back to playing bowls , practice on Saturday's as a pairs competition has commenced as well as club matches in 100 up, lists for club championship and club pairs are on the notice board . All bowls is conducted in accordance with State and Health Regulations regarding COVID19 guidelines. Regards, Bias Bowler

THANK YOU!
Inverleigh Public Hall Committee give thanks for the wonderful work our volunteer mowers/maintenance community members do at the hall grounds. We continue to be grateful for the hours you all put in to keep the hall facilities looking so welcoming. On a sad note we lost a valuable volunteer George Vickers in August this year suddenly after a short illness. George along with his wife Janet, volunteered his time in not only helping with the grounds but gave many hours in cleaning the hall facilities. Our thoughts continue to be with Janet, Rhiannon and family.
We would like to recognise the hall maintenance volunteers: David Walpole, Roger and Jenny Kowalik, Campbell Brumby, Simon Bell, Phil Morell, David and Linda Farrimond and Keith Robson. If you are willing to join the band of volunteers on a monthly roster system and you have a mower please don’t hesitate to contact me before the end of 2020 to enable a new roster to be sent out for 2021 on either: 0417512240 or email: amtarbett@bigpond.com Anne-Maree Tarbett

The Incredibles Review
Pixar took a gamble when making The Incredibles. It was one of the first PG rated family/children’s films and the risk paid off. I think it is a great movie and i believe families of all ages will enjoy it just as much as I did. The writing for The Incredibles is well done. Having superheroes outlawed is an interesting concept explored within this film and it is done effectively. Even though this movie can be serious at times, the jokes land well. Syndrome is also a compelling villain and his motivations make sense unlike other villains in both children’s and adult superhero films. The plot also makes sense, and it doesn’t have pacing issues like other superhero films. The use of a family as the protagonists works effectively in this film. You see how the personalities and ages conflict and grow. Bob is eager to get back into the game which conflicts with Helen who wants to obey the law and look after Jack Jack while Violet and Dash struggle with school and come to terms with their powers. Frozone is also a great addition. However I felt he was sidelined and should have had more of a presence within the film. Superhero films I feel, are only as good as their villains. This is evident in every superhero film and the Incredibles is no exception. Syndrome has perfect motive for what he aims to achieve. As a child he relied on his intellect, but because he had no powers, he was tossed aside which gives him his motivation. He is also an active threat and his actions have caused the demise of many superheroes. Syndrome is my favourite Pixar antagonist because of this. The music is also well done. It has that distinct flavour of intrigue and espionage. It fits clearly with the tone of the film, as well as the setting being in 1960s America. I enjoyed this movie, and you should too. It’s for all ages with some darker moments for the adults. I do wish that there was more of Frozone however since he is such a great character. Today’s cool fact about The Incredibles is that it was the first Pixar film with entirely human characters!

POLICE REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 2020
Hello all, This month I had a report of some damage to the primary school play equipment where someone has burnt several offensive words and symbols and some other images into the treated pine posts. This is just another incident being added to a growing list of damages occurring in the school grounds which has led to the school prohibiting children from attending in the grounds after school hours. I ask parents to be aware what their children are up to and where the say they are going and sometimes parents need to check up on them. The school, I understand, is now considering cameras to cover the grounds. I have had reports of some vehicles doing burnouts in Common Road up near the Teesdale-Inverleigh Road. I have mentioned this before but if someone is caught doing this their car will be impounded and they receive a summons for court not just a fine!! Offenders be warned.
I had some reports of some utes driving at excessive speeds and doing ‘fishtails’ on the River Track near Winchelsea Road. Their registration numbers were obtained and they were from Winchelsea and the Winchelsea Police have attended and dealt with these drivers. It doesn’t take much effort these days to be photographed or filmed doing this and you can be prosecuted when we have video evidence. Speaking of the River Track, beside the Barwon River it didn’t take long after the council removed their signs when some COVID travel restrictions eased for campers to flock to the area. Straight away I had the reports of the dangerous drivers in the area (above) and then the abandoned rubbish and tents left in several places. Council were notified and collected the abandoned possessions. If rubbish/possessions are left in the area please notify the council so it doesn’t all get blown about the bush. Keep safe Chris

CFA MESSAGE FOR THIS MONTH
Everyone who lives in Inverleigh should now really be thinking about preparing their property for the upcoming fire season, and this means starting early! If the radio and TV bulletins start to tell you that bad fire days are coming please, don’t leave things until the last minute, because that is the time to start getting your property ready: Here’s some suggested preparatory work: Remove doormats from around the house Move combustible outdoor furniture and other items from, and under, decks, verandahs and up against, or under the house Move pot plants a few metres from the home Double check that gas bottles are anchored securely with the relief valves pointing away from any flammable materials Keep woodpiles away from the house, because stray fire embers can easily ignite the stacked up wood. Mow your lawns and keep grass cut to less than 10cm. Don’t forget, fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. Make sure trees on your property are healthy with no dead limbs and no vegetation underneath them Mature trees can help shield against radiant heat and embers, but they must be strategically located and well managed. Cut back any overhanging tree branches that are close to your property with no branches in 10m space. On bigger properties, a clearing of about 10 metres of well-mown grass around your home is advisable Walk around your home and, again, remove piles of fine fuels such as leaves dry grass, twigs and loose bark, because you don’t want embers landing there. Also, check your gutters to make sure leaves haven’t built up
Make sure you remove any fuels from around your windows and doors. These are the most vulnerable parts of your home so they warrant some extra attention. If you have flammable liquids, store them away from house, where possible, in flame proof containers. It’s actually quite simple. Fire burns wherever there is fuel. If you reduce fuel around your home, you can reduce how hot and destructive a fire is as it passes through your property. CFA have a range of material available, both written and in video form, to help you prepare more fully. If you would like to access it, simply visit the CFA website or Google will take you to the right place by searching “How For Prepare Your Property For A Bushfire” and clicking on How to Prepare Your Property - Country Fire Authority. Whether you’ve got a grassfire survival plan already or yet to get started, this workshop will help you put together a plan that ticks all the right boxes. Work through your plan step -by-step with guidance of a CFA specialist and have the opportunity to ask questions along the way. So, come along (virtually) to the Inverleigh Grassfire Planning Workshop Webinar It’s free and no registration required. Session 1: Topic - Fire Behaviour 7.00pm – 8.00pm, Monday 26th October,2020 Session 2: Topic - Personal Safety, Planning 7.00pm – 8.00pm, Wednesday 28th October, 2020 Join in via the Zoom Webinar Link: https://au01web.zoom.us/j/61222766171 Phil Jacobson

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL
Time to get fire ready With summer around the corner, Golden Plains Shire Council is encouraging residents to ensure their properties are prepared for the fire season, ahead of Council’s upcoming Fire Hazard Inspections Program.
Owners of land are required to keep their properties cut to a maximum height of 300 millimetres during the non-fire season and then to a maximum height of 100 millimetres during the fire danger period, or as directed under a Fire Prevention Notice. Council will commence its annual property fire hazard inspection program on 2 November 2020. All properties deemed a fire hazard to the property owner or their neighbours
will then be issued with a Fire Prevention Notice. The Notice will specify what works are required to remove the fire hazard by Sunday 29 November, 2020. Council will undertake a second inspection from 30 November 2020 to determine if required works have been undertaken in accordance with the Fire Prevention Notice. If works have not been conducted, Council will issue a $1,652 infringement and arrange a contractor to attend and slash the property. Property owners will incur a minimum fee of $267 for this work. In mid-October, Council began its own fire prevention works, commencing the annual roadside slashing program of all sealed roads and strategic fire breaks to reduce fuel loads. Council also conducts burning of selected reserves to remove fire hazards. This program typically commences in the drier south of the Shire before moving north, with the program completed by Christmas. For more information on Fire Hazard Inspections and Notices, including Frequently Asked Questions, visit goldenplains.vic.gov.au/fire

It was with great excitement and anticipation that we welcomed students back to school this term! We are looking forward to a great term and we are hopeful that we will be able to finish this school year strong. We have come this far with a tremendous amount of support from our parent community, and we are thankful for everything that they have done, for the sacrifices made and for the challenges endured and overcome throughout this very interesting year. It is a year that we will not forget easily. It is a year that has taught us so much, and forced us to learn new skills – all of us! Our teachers have done an outstanding job and have demonstrated their commitment to our students. I know that they are extremely happy being back in the classroom doing what they do best – supporting and encouraging every child to do their best and to strive for excellence. I thank them for their dedication and tireless efforts! Students have settled back into routine are working very well in their classrooms and are enjoying playtime in the yard. It is wonderful to see so many smiling faces, and to hear their happy chatter! While it is a shame that we cannot have all students playing in the yard at the same time, there have been many positive outcomes that the staff have noticed. Firstly, everyone has more space to run and play. The Prep- 2 students are making the most of being able to use the cricket pitch and oval. They are engaging in more organised play - it’s wonderful seeing the grade 2’s behaving like leaders in the yard and taking on the task of organising games. It is not unusual to have games of cricket, footy and basketball happening along with sand play and other creative play. The older students are also enjoying having extra space to run, play and socialise! We are fortunate to have such beautiful grounds at our school, and are even more fortunate to have students taking pride in our school and caring about each other! We also have a few keen gardeners in our midst and they are doing a great job keeping the weeds down and the plants tended to in our garden areas! Last week the grade 6’s and their prep buddies were able to see each other and have a chat. We met outside in organised pairs spaced appropriately apart so that we maintained our ‘bubbles’ of space. This was enjoyed by all!
Our grade 3’s and 4’s will be off to camp at Anglesea in the first week of November. Exciting times ahead. Sharon Baker Acting Principal

Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve-Boneseed Attack
A campaign to rid the Inverleigh bush of the noxious invasive weed, boneseed, has resulted in several thousand plants being removed. The campaign, conducted over the past five weeks, has been carried out by the Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve, with the support from several other community members and by Parks Victoria. Boneseed, a native of South Africa, is known to have been present in the reserve for over twenty years, but has been kept under control by the Friends Group. But boneseed presents a very serious threat and has the capacity to take over and dominate where it is not controlled. More than 50 percent of the You Yangs has been colonized by boneseed and in some areas it has taken over completely. Boneseed is easily recognised in Spring by its very bright yellow flowers. Visitors to the reserve are encouraged to pull out any boneseed plants they may encounter. There are many photos on the Internet to help you learn how to recognise boneseed plants. Alternatively, the Friends Group would very much appreciate being notified of any areas in which visitors to the reserve have noticed boneseed plants. Any readers who would like to help with next year’s boneseed removal campaign can contact the Friends Group. SHELFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been a great start to term four and it is lovely to have the students back in the classroom. It’s unbelievable to see how the students have grown over the Remote Learning and school holiday period. During Remote Learning we were able to set up our new furniture; which included couches, bean bags and bookcases. We’ve also received our new laptops which have been very popular with the students too.
MARC Van
We thank Mrs Lang for the creativity and enthusiasm she brings to our MARC Van days. Recently the students made magnetic slime and were able to take home a portion of slime and some small magnets to experiment with.
Cooking
We have eased back into our cooking program. The first Friday back at school the students made chocolate chip cookies; which were a big hit. This Friday we are cooking lasagna.
Kitchen Garden
During lockdown and the school holidays the garden has gone crazy! Our broad beans and fruit trees are flowering and our potatoes and herbs are flourishing. However the weeds have also gone crazy and we will be working with the students to tame the garden.
Hi I am a student at Shelford Primary and my name is Alex. At Shelford we got 5 new computers.
22 Leigh News Welcome back to school!
Students were warmly welcomed back to school to commence term 4. Our school gates were decorated in colourful bunting, and balloons, beautifully put together by Mrs Belcher and her sewing volunteers. Students have settled well which has been pleasing to see. The first few days were set aside to re-establish routines of school and allow students time to connect with peers after a long absence. The busy routine of school will now set in as we prepare all students for 2021, be it in a higher year level or for their secondary schooling. Village Project Our Junior and Senior students have been working hard to complete our ‘Community Village Project’. It was all hands on deck to complete painting and landscaping around our three cubbies which include a Police

Year 5 and 6 Camp Our year 5 and 6 students are very excited to be going to Camp Kangaroobie this month. The three day, two night camp is an important part of our curriculum for outdoor education. Camp Kangaroobie is situated on the Great Ocean Road, the closest town being Princetown. During the camp, students visit the 12 Apostles, complete a beach walk and participate in canoeing, an obstacle course, ropes course and many other fun activities. GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Tuesday 27 October, 2020
TIME TO GET FIRE READY IN GOLDEN PLAINS With summer around the corner, Golden Plains Shire Council is encouraging residents to ensure their properties are prepared for the fire season, ahead of Council’s upcoming Fire Hazard Inspections Program. A well-prepared property is more likely to survive a fire. It is important to reduce fine fuels on private property, which are the primary driver of fire intensity and spread. To make a property fire ready, owners should: • • • • • • •
Cut grass to a maximum height of 300 millimetres during the non-fire season, and then to a maximum height of 100 millimetres during the Fire Danger Period, or as directed under a Fire Prevention Notice; On properties more than two hectares, ensure grass is maintained to no higher than 100mm up to a minimum of 20 metres from the house or outbuilding; Remove any flammable material around the home, including cleaning out gutters; Clear dead undergrowth and fallen branches; Ensure any firewood is stored well away from the house or outbuildings; Trim excess vegetation along driveways; and Clearly number the property so that it can be easily found by Emergency Services.
Council will commence its annual property fire hazard inspection program on 2 November 2020. All properties deemed a fire hazard to the property owner or their neighbours will then be issued with a Fire Prevention Notice. Last week, Council made Emergency Preparedness Works Travel Permit application forms available on its website for Golden Plains Shire property owners living in Metropolitan Melbourne. While the border between regional Victoria and Melbourne remains in place, these permits will allow access to Golden Plains Shire for a 72-hour-period to complete emergency preparedness works. The application form and further information is available at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/fire. Completed forms must be sent to enquiries@gplains.vic.gov.au. In mid-October, Council began its own fire prevention works, commencing the annual roadside slashing program of all sealed roads and strategic fire breaks to reduce fuel loads. Council also conducts burning of selected reserves to remove fire hazards. This program commences in the drier south of the Shire before moving north, with the program completed by Christmas. For more information on Fire Hazard Inspections and Notices, including Frequently Asked Questions, visit goldenplains.vic.gov.au/fire.

TABLE OF CONTENTS • Mysterious Mork's Mishap • Mork in hospital IN OTHER NEWS COVID UPDATE
We are very pleased to have been able to open our doors to clients and would like to thank you very much for your cooperation with the COVID rules. We are able to have 4 people in the waiting room at any one time. We are now relaxing the telephone from the car park rule but would ask you check how many people are in the waiting room before entering. Hand disinfectant is available at the front door.
M y s t e r i o u s Mork's Mishap
Mork became a clinic regular and favourite recently after he was rushed into the clinic unable to stand on his hind legs. He was found early one morning after escaping during the night and he had luckily dragged himself under cover. Having recently been in for his course of kitten vaccinations and his desexing operation only five days earlier, his cute little face had already won many hearts so we were all sad to see Mork injured.
Mork in hospital
Ever stoic, Mork was happy when he arrived and greeted everyone with his cute face and loud purrs. However, his set of radiographs taken showed some shocking injuries - Mork had sustained bilateral (both sides) fractures of his femurs! Femurs are the main thigh bone in your legs and he had sustained complete fracture of both femurs just above the stifle (Knee). Luckily his pelvis, hip joints and lower limbs were completely fine and even more oddly, besides some brusing, there was no other external wounds on him. There are many different options for fracture repair ranging from external fixation, pins and crosswire through to plating or a combination of these. The selection of which repair technique to choose depends on factors including where the fracture/s are in relation to a joint, the type of break in the bone, how reduceable (able to get the end back together) the fracture is, how long since the break occurred, the activity level of the patient, and the desired return of function for the patient. Being such a lovely cat, his owners did not hesitate to have Mork go to surgery and his broken legs pinned back together. The femur is a bone referred to as a long bone. It consists of the outer covering-the periosteum, the next layer is the hard compact bone, the following layer is cancellous (spongy) bone and finally the internal 'hollow' part is marrow, where new red blood cells and white blood cells are made and stored. The two ends of the bone are called
Leigh News 31 Cat Breeding Season
Cats are breeding machines. Cats in the breeding season have continual breeding cycles throughout the summer months. These cycles repeat every 3 weeks unless the queen is mated. Desexing your cat will remove the problem of unwanted litters and overpopulation. A desexed cat is less likely to roam, reducing the risk of becoming lost or hit by a car. Desexed cats are better protected from certain illness and diseases. There is no benefit in letting a female have one litter before being desexed. Desexing is a day stay procedure. Our Vets operate every week day. Contact the clinic if you require further information or to book your cat in for surgery.
the trochanter up near the hip and the condyles down towards the knee. For best healing of the bone, you want to try to get all the fragments of bone back together as close as possible to get the fastest repair. So Dr. Peter and Dr Kelly set about the task of repairing not one, but two broken legs! His first surgery required each leg to have two pins inserted from up near the trochanter through the skin, down the shaft and marrow of the bone, collect broken and displaced sections and fix the end of the pin towards the condyl of the femur. Two pins were required for each leg to act a bit like a cross and anchor - only one pin might mean the broken end of the bone could spin around on the long axis and not hold firmly in place. So the second pin was needed to act as an anchor and hold all the fragments in place. The following radiographs show the placement of the pins, bringing the sections of bone together nicely. After the radiographs were taken to confirm placement, the long end of the pins sticking out from his hips were cut flush with the skin. His legs were then bandaged to help add support and allow his bones to heal.
Over the coming weeks,
and a few bandage changes, radiographs were taken again to assess his healing and fantastically, the two end of the bones had formed a callus and no gap could be seen !! It was determined that healing was sufficient and his pins were removed and Mork was very happy to finally have his bandages off!! Safe to say he is now s t r i c t l y inside.
