At 5.30am on Monday the 14th November 2022 a large freight train travelling west to east was derailed just short of the Hamilton Highway rail crossing. The derailment was heard by local residents. Being a freight train, the only staff on board were the drivers with the front part of the train safely negotiating the point of the actual derailment. Nobody was hurt in the derailment.
The train was comprised of five engines (3 piggingbacking a ride back to Melbourne) and 1.5 kilometres of freight wagons and containers. It was near the middle of the length of the train that the derailment occured affecting up to 20 wagons loaded with containers. The detailment effectively cut of rail transport of Australian, West to East, with the Sydnet ot Broken Hill already out of action due to flood damage.
Repairs were immediatedly started by ARTC staff and contractors, with the rail crossing open to Highway traffic at approx 5pm on Friday 25th November. The rail line was operational ear lier in that week. for rail operations.

Well done to all ARTC Staff, Rail Investigators and the many local contractors, including Excavator operators and Truck and Dog Trailer operators who moved many tones of Sleepers, Ballast (the rock base material under the rails and sleepers) and soil and mud to get this import ant link in our rail system operational and safe as quickly as possible.
Thanks also to the many many locals who had life disrupted in a major way with long road diversions necessary. The school children too, some with end of year exams happening during the road shutdown. Of course it was a major distruption to our lives, but it was corrected in 12 days. Thanks everybody. Lets put it all behind us, learn from what could have been done better and be thankful that in the end it was only twisted metal and not twisted bodies and minds.

Honouring Ross & Coral Peel
IPA Celebratory Dinner
On Wednesday evening, 23rd November, members of the Inverleigh Progress Association met at the Inver leigh Hotel to celebrate the year and ac knowledge the particular contributions to our community by Ross Peel and his wife Coral.
Ross has lived in Inverleigh all his life and over many years has con tributed to many local projects, includ ing a period as our local Councilor. Among his many contributions he has been a member of the Sporting Com plex, the Bowls Club, the Presbyterian Church, the Inverleigh Primary School, where he and his children attended and now his grandson attends, as well as a period in local government. Ross un derstands the community and has always been prepared to roll up his sleeves and work as well as contributing to any required preliminary planning. When a 2001 Federa tion Project was in the planning stages he was able to get some army plans for a similar swing bridge to be used in the submission for funding. Our walk bridge over the river was the result.
He looked after the river pump, which has been used by many of you to water your gardens and stock during dry times. He has re paired the pumps on occasions and lifted them out of harms way during periods of flood, like now. Thanks to Ewen this responsibility will contin ue in the Peel family hands.
Ross was one of our early community coordinators for Inver leigh and his membership of this group and the Inverleigh Progress Association meant we were kept in the loop about planned projects. The IPA took on this role, when the then 3 coordinators dispersed leaving a vacuum.
Ross has always been ready to listen, but also to offer sage ad vice based on lived experience and an understanding of the needs of the community. Many new residents are unaware of the amount of volunteer time and effort that has gone into making this town the way it is today.
Ross can offer criticism where it is needed but will acknowledge when a job is done to his satisfaction. An occasional thank you goes a long way to maintain ing good relationships. A lesson we should all take to heart. A wise head well worth listening to.
Over the past year the IPA, with input from many people in and around Inverleigh have put togeth er our Community Plan, which will guide us over the next 4 years. This plan is available on our website www.inverleigh.org.au for everyone to view. Some of the proj ects are quite large and particular lo cal groups are undertaking them, but some of them are smaller and while the Progress Association will help with these, extra volunteers would be extremely welcome.
Others attending the dinner have contributed to the community, some over many years and some for less time, but without their contribu tion our community would be a poor er place. We all enjoy this town and its surrounds, but the glue that holds it together is the spirit of the people.
If you are a long time resident or new to the town, find some time to get involved in one of our projects. You won’t regret it.
The next meeting of the Progress Association will be held on Wednes day 15th February 2023 at 7.30 PM at the Inverleigh Public Hall.
Luanne Thornton.

The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need vol unteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.
Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.
The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.
Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.
Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

Peter’s Editorial
Hello again and pretty fair to say, it's all been happening in Inverleigh recently. We haven't really gotten over the Flooding of our district and we have had a major railway inci dent, cutting off major rail facilities between Australia's East and West. A frustrating time for all, but thanks to the hard work of the rail corporations and local contractors, the whole serious disruption to road and rail through Inverleigh was minimised to 12 days. Thank you everyone for your patience.
Coming up very early in December we have the Great Australian Bike Ride having an overnight stop here in Inverleigh on the 3rd of December. There will be 2,500 plus Bicycling enthusiasts arriving from midday Saturday 3rd December and camping overnight at the local sporting complex area before continuing their ride the following day. Good luck to them all and safe riding.
Seasons greetings to all as we conclude 2022 and bounce forward into 2023. Enjoy the holiday time with fami ly and friends. Please remember the reason for the season and I'll be back with our next edition in February 2023.

Our Past and Present for the Future
The Inverleigh Historical Society commenced under the auspices of the Inverleigh Public Hall committee in 2003, to pre serve paper and photographic images relating to Inverleigh and district. To collect this informa tion it requires technology such as printer and scanner and nu merous items of stationary. To enhance our meagre bank balance it was decided in 2008 to produce a local calendar and so an annual fundraiser was commenced.
At the same time, the Bendigo Bank decid ed to replicate their community bank contribution through their existing branches. The Bannockburn Community Enterprise (now named Bannockburn & District Grants) commenced with an invitation for organisations to apply for a special grant of $1000. The Inverleigh Historical Society was the successful applicant and purchased a scanner and it also paid the first printing costs of the calendar. The group made an offer to write a monthly article for the Leigh News which was gratefully accepted, and we are now selling our fifteenth edition of the calendar and still providing copy for the paper.
Is it pushing or pulling?
The front cover and January image of the 2023 calendar features a steam locomotive crossing the brick piers of the Murgheboluc bridge. “ K 190 crosses the rarely photographed bridge over Bruce's Creek between Inverleigh and Gheringhap. This bridge later disappeared when Armco culverts were installed. Sep 23 1979.” (photo courtesy Geoff Win kler)
About 400 buried corrugated steel pipes (Armco- trade mark) have been installed in the V/ Line network in 129 locations. They were a cost effective solution for the railway back in the 70s and 80s and several can be viewed along the Gheringhap - Maroona line. The following website gives great photos along our railway track. http://www.victorianrailways.net/photogallery/ westsou/cressy_line/cressy_line.html
Copies of the 2023 calendar are available at $15 from Sonny café, Liz McDonald 52651270, or near the store on Saturdays before Christmas. In addition the next two volumes of the col lated stories, 2017/18 and 2019/20 have been printed and cost $20 each. The Historical Soci ety meetings will recommence on 4th Wednes day in February 2023, at the hall from 2pm. The Inverleigh Historical Society would be delighted to receive images of our recent flood event to add to their collection. In the past we have been asked to supply images to government organisations and used in previous calendars.

G’Day from the penners for the last issue for 2022. It’s been a long cold year this year and it hasn’t finished yet. As I write this article it is about 100 C and we have lit the fire. My wish for Christmas is for La Nina to fade away quickly, please. Let’s hope by the time this is published, all the ground has dried out and we are basking in summer sunshine.
On a brighter note it is only weeks until Christ mas and I’m sure there any many children making mental notes on what they are going to ask Santa for, this year.
From all of us at the group, to all of you who read this this newsletter, a very Merry Christmas and a splendid new year.
Today’s poem was written by Wendy, in response to a challenge during group on the word "Bedlam".
We hope you enjoy it. See you all in 2023.
Bedlam Born
Locked behind the iron gates Which tell of horrors un-be-told Lives of people of many hates Some demure, many bold.
Crazy yells and anguish cries Terror spills from open cracks Splits the night of moonless skies Stretching arms and legs on racks.
No normal folk to venture near No horse or dog to wander there On darkened night or day so clear Keep away if your life be fair.
Hark the Raven calls so eerie Watching for impending danger Sullen eyes of inmates teary Deep in the forbidden chamber

Geelong Legacy Plants ANZAC Tree at Inverleigh Primary School
On Friday 4th November, members from Geelong Legacy donated and planted a Pinus Brutia Pine Tree in our school grounds, along with a commemorative plaque. The tree is a 4th descendant of the original lone pine that was growing at Gallipoli. A pinecone was collected by Sgt Mc Dowell and stashed in his backpack. He returned to Australia with it. Some years later he gave the pinecone to his aunt, Mrs Emma Gray of Grassmere near Warrnambool. She origi nally grew five trees from the seeds in the pinecone. One of the trees did not survive, but the other four were planted in Warrnambool, The sisters, The Shrine of Remembrance and Wattle Park in Melbourne. Several trees have been propagated over the years both at Burnley College, Melbourne and at Gar voc. There are approximately 26 trees planted in the Geelong and surrounding area. These trees are of significance and are placed in a register. We are very honoured to have a tree of such special significance planted here at Inver leigh Primary School!
Students in Grades 5 & 6 have been participating in the DASH Program this term. D-A-S-H is Dynamic activities, Active voices, Safe com munities, and Healthy engagement.
DASH is an 8-week primary school program for grades 5 and 6 in the local government areas of Golden Plains, the Pyrenees, Ararat, and Northern and Southern Grampians. It is a federally funded program and of no cost to schools. DASH is about nurturing ‘young heroes’ and ‘change makers’ within their community. It is an oppor tunity to support them in being able to spot problems in their community (people, places, or environment) and produce creative and innovative new ways to solve issues that are important to them. They are then given the op portunity to test and share their ideas with their peers and community agencies, and then ultimately, bring their idea to life through a project. Community members are invited to attend a ‘showcase’ of student projects at our school on Thursday 8th December at 2:30pm. Our students would love to share their ideas with you!

POLICE REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2022
Hello all,
I am writing this a short time after the train derailment which came out of left field and has caused such an impact on our roads. Combined with this was the Rokewood Shel ford Road closure due to a section of road being washed away near Wingeel Road. These events together with other flooding has led motorists enduring a lot of road closures, re duced speed zones and some feelings of being isolated. A lot of the through traffic especially the trucks have had to find alternative routes and has led to some having to travel along some roads that they do not normally use.
Please be wary of the road conditions, there are lots of sections of various roads now having numerous potholes and others have sections of edges having crumbled away. A sink hole developed on the Bannockburn-Shel ford- Teesdale Road due to water drainage issues under the road and there will be future works on it to fix the road so obey any reduced speed limits please.
There are ongoing works on the Hamil ton Hwy Inverleigh at Hope Plains Road where the speeds are reduced and I have noticed some motorists ignoring the roadworks speed limits even though workers are there at the site. Be aware if you are doing more then 25 km/h over the reduced limits you risk losing your driver licence for 3 months (ie 65 km/h in a reduced 40 km/h zone).
Please be aware of the sometimes long shifts the traffic controllers are doing often standing for long periods in terrible weather conditions around various sites and do not
take out your frustration with road closures on them. We all need to be considerate and patient while the roads get repaired.
I have been called out overnight twice in the last week to more flooded roads and the camping area on the side of the Hamilton Highway Inverleigh experienced some flood ing with all the campers having to move out at short notice many into the truck parking bays. I was also called to another vehicle that drove into a flooded section of Parker Road in Sutherlands Creek which required numer ous emergency services including the SES, water Police and Search and Rescue squad to attend to rescue the driver. This came just a day after another motorist had to be rescued from another nearby crossing on the Moora bool River. Please do not drive into flood waters, you may not appreciate the depth of water and the pressure of the water travel ling through and sometimes the road surface underneath just like the Parker Road incident might not be as you remember it. This road had large sections of the bitumin surface lift ed up and washed off the crossing.
In recent weeks the Bannockburn Police and I have had to attend to over five different driver rescues from various river crossings some requiring the air wing and most have been local drivers!!!!
I repeat, stay out of the flooded river crossings. Don’t assume that because you are in a 4WD or a truck that it will not affect you.
Keep safe Chris

Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve.
The Friends Group recently hosted two wild flower walks in the local bush. Over sixty enthusiastic flower watchers participated and many beautiful pho tos were taken of the orchids, lilies and other small, but precious flowers that we are so lucky to have nearby. Several of the flowers are on the threatened and endan gered lists.
The Friends Group has also been busy with sev eral working bees at the Reserve. After finding African Weed Orchid the group has recently worked hard to find and remove hundreds of these plants before they flower and produce seeds. This is a particularly bad weed; it produces vast amounts of tiny seeds that spread readily in the wind. If you find any near you, dig them up as soon as possible, being careful to remove the underground corms.
From Dry to Flooding Record rains in October satu rated the Inverleigh Nature Conser vation Reserve, producing streams, ponds and lakes in places that are normally almost bone dry.
The Black Gully Dam, at the northern end of the Reserve, has been
full to overflowing for the first time since 1995, and is full of tadpoles and millions of tiny water creatures (in cluding wrigglers) and there is the sound of hundreds of frogs calling. If you’d like to visit Black Gully Dam, you’ll find it well worthwhile; it’s a rare and beautiful sight. It is shown on Google maps about 700 metres east of the main road.
Bird Walk
The Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve invite you to join them for a Guided Bird Walk in the Reserve on Sunday December 11th. It is from 10.30 to 12 noon, starting from the Com mon Road entrance (beside the golf club entrance). Please let us know if you are coming, to help with planning and so we can contact you if the event has to be can celled. SMS 0429651298 or email windle. keith@gmail.com End of Year Lunch. Feel free to bring along a picnic lunch and join the Friends Group for their end of year lunch. This will commence after the Guided Bird Walk on the 11th of Decem ber. You can either come to the Guided bird walk or lunch or make a day of it and come along to both. RSVP as above.

So, like getting ready for Christmas, you should be now thinking about preparing your property for the summer fire season. It seems hard to imagine that there will be a fire season when everything is so wet, and the wet conditions can make cleaning up and preparation harder but if possible still try to do it.
The sort of things that should be on your list are cleaning out gutters and spouts on houses. Removing flam mable material such as wood and leaves from around build ings. Mowing grass, checking access onto your property is clear. Check your street number is visible, and create or re visit your fire plan and make all members of your household familiar with it.
With the current wet conditions there will be a lot of grass growth when it warms up and dries out, this will then equate into a high potential fuel loading for fires later in the Summer and early Autumn. So we know from experience this will happen so please take the time to prepare your property and be well prepared and ready for the fire season when it comes.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas from your local CFA brigade. Ewen Peel.

Inverleigh Cemetery Trust Trivia night a great success
What a great night was had by everyone that attended and supported the Inverleigh Cemetery Trust’s Trivia Night on Saturday November 19.
The evening was hosted by Brett Cunningham. Thanks Brett, you certainly captured the audience throughout the evening!
The winners were team “Wet n Wild” (appropri ate name considering the weather during the evening!) comprising of: Jade and Dan Walker, Geoff Morgan, Wayne and Lorraine Peel, Keith Robson and Tonya Al len. Congratulations, it was a tight finish with only one point separating first from second place.
The major sponsor of the evening was Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Services for which we are most grateful for their ongoing support of our Trivia Nights. Special thanks to Ebony Hovey for her help with the sponsorship also.
We made a profit of $2300 which is an outstand ing amount and it will be used for ongoing maintenance at the cemetery grounds.
We would like to express our gratitude and thanks to the many businesses that gave donations for prizes and financial assistance towards the evening: Tracey and David from Inverleigh General Store, Inverleigh Hotel, High Eight Home & Living, Hewitt and Whitty, Mowers Galore at North Geelong, Butleigh Farm at Murgheboluc,
Woolworths at Bannockburn, Cellarbrations at Ban nockburn, Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic, Bannock burn Newsagent, Winks Eyecare at Bannockburn, Maguire’s Butcher shop at Winchelsea, Bannockburn Bakehouse, Inverleigh Pharmacy, Main Street Pizza and Pasta at Bannockburn, Elegantly Beautiful at Ban nockburn, Sonny Café, Bannockburn Pharmacy and RL Butcher and Associates at Inverleigh. Thanks again to everyone that attended.

Last term, our students were given the task of creating a picture story book for a kindergarten aged student. Their books needed to include the key features of a fiction text such as a front cover, blurb, about the author page, illustrations and a motivational message.
Last week our senior students visited the Teesdale Children’s Centre to share their stories. It was heart warming to see how quickly the kindergarteners and our students connected, learnt from one another and engaged in developmental play.
Our students read their books to an entranced audience, who asked lots of insightful questions. We cant wait to visit again!
Despite the disruptions to our kitchen due to the flood, our weekly cooking program continues.
Teriyaki chicken sushi was on the menu recently. It was a fun, messy and fiddly session, with our students tackling the tasks of finely slicing vegetables and layering and rolling their sushi. We are always impressed by our students' willingness to try new foods from other cultures.
We always endeavour to use what we can from our vegie garden and orchard in our cooking lessons to promote healthy eating and sustainable living. We recently harvested our beetroots and sugar snap peas and have a bumper crop of carrots, spring onions, cauliflower and potatoes which are almost ready to pick and enjoy.

Mosquito Borne Diseases and Pets
Mosquito season reaches its peak during the summer months. Prime breeding conditions for mosquitos and their diseases are already occurring.
Mosquitoes itchy bites are not only annoying for humans and animals, but they also have the potential to transmit life threatening illnesses to our pets.
Heartworm Disease
Merry Christmas
The team at Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic would like to thank all our clients for their support during 2022.
We wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year and look forward to caring for your pet family in 2023.
Heartworm is a parasitic worm that can infect pets through a mosquito bite. An infected mosquito injects a larval stage of the worm under your pets skin. From the time of infection it takes approximately six months for the microfilaria in the pets bloodstream to mature to adulthood.
In dogs early signs may include shortness of breath, dry cough, lethargy and lack of stamina when exercising. The signs of heartworm depend on the number of adult worms present, the location of the worms and how long your dog has been infected.
In cats clinical signs of heartworm may include loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, coughing, gagging and vomiting.
It is important to understand that heartworm disease progresses slowly. When an infected pet starts to show symptoms, they could already be heavily infected.
34 Leigh News
Heartworm is a serious disease that can cause heart failure, lung disease, organ damage and death.
Heartworm disease can be deadly, but we can easily and safely prevent heartworm in our pets.
There are many heartworm preventatives available. Prevention should begin at 6 -8 weeks of age. If your dog has not had heartworm medication for more than six months, a blood test is necessary before you commence preventative treatment.
The most convenient protection for dogs is a yearly injection that can be given at the same time as your dog's annual health check and vaccination. This is Proheart SR12.
There are also tablets and spot-on applications for dogs and cats that are given monthly. Some of the products we recommend are Revolution and Simparica Trio.
Mosquitoes are hard to keep out of both your yard and house, so even and indoor pet is at risk . If

Inverleigh Community Plan
The Inverleigh Community Plan 2022 has been finalised by volunteers of the Inverleigh Progress Association on behalf of the Inverleigh community.
The Inverleigh Community Plan is a written document that identifies our vision for the future and the priorities and actions we have identified to achieve this vision.
The finalised Inverleigh Community Plan, along with a 2 page summary document, will be presented to Council in December.
Many thanks to all residents and community groups that took part in the surveys and consultation held over the past twelve months.
Your feedback has enabled us to produce a document that truly reflects the nature of the township of Inverleigh and its ongoing progress.
