BANNOCKBURN SURGERY IS CELEBRATING 40 YEARS. Leigh News 3

Bannockburn Surgery first opened its doors in 1983 – a humble beginning in small rooms located between the original Pharmacy and Supermarket.

The practice soon moved to 19 High Street in 1986 with two consulting rooms, a small treatment room and tiny tearoom for its team members. In 2000, the current building (16 High Street) was opened, – a purpose-built practice complete with five consulting rooms, a sixth room having been added in 2010.

One of the Principal GPs, Dr Cameron Profitt commenced in 1991. With Dr John Henderson joining the practice in 2006 and Dr Ben Fry following suit in 2012. The practice has since grown from strength to strength and has a wonderfully dedicated team of Doctors, Nurses, Reception staff and Practice Manager. They also have access to high-quality Allied Health Practitioners with plans for more services to come.

Bannockburn Surgery has been fortunate to have additional GP Registrars join our team expanding our provision of service even further. This means they are lucky to be in the position to have capacity to offer more appointments including on the day appointments.

The surgery has big plans for a new development next door to the current practice which is currently awaiting the approval of council. They are incredibly excited for the future of not only Bannockburn Surgery but also

Local Community Grant Beyond The Valley recognises how fortunate we are to hold our event in the Golden Plains Shire (GPS) community. In appreciation we are proud to launch the annual Beyond The Valley Community Grant to endorse local initiatives that exhibit positive social impact by assisting the advancement and longevity of these activities.

The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years.

Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.

Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have new block built. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.

The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street.

Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections.

We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Hello again, 1 month to Christmas! Can you believe it. I know someone who just may have received a early Christmas Present. That Christmas present is the beautiful puppy called "Maggie". Readers may remember that some time age when had a "Where's Harry" in the Leigh News. Sadly Harry has passed on and just last week I got to meet Maggie, so I said to Maggies owner "Could I take a photo for the Leigh News". She checked with her Mum and was able to say YES, so, somewhere in this edition is a small photo of "Maggie" for you to find.

Seasons Greeting to all readers too. This year just seems to have flown by. I trust you all can enjoy this special time with family and friends, on holiday, travelling somewhere special or just enjoying peace and quiet at home.

Christmas is a special time for me as My family and I celebrate the birth of Jesus. I trust you can enjoy this season for the same reason too. The world is not a real happy place in some countries at the moment, but for those who trust in Jesus and look forward to his return, Christmas is a very special time and are looking forward to his return. GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Tuesday 21 November 2023

CR BRETT CUNNINGHAM RE-ELECTED AS GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE MAYOR Golden Plains Shire Councillors re-elected Cr Brett Cunningham as Mayor of Golden Plains Shire for 2023-24 following a decisive Council meeting at the Golden Plains Civic Centre in Bannockburn tonight.

Cr Cunningham will serve a second term as Mayor following his appointment as Mayor in 2022. He will serve a one-year term leading up to the next general Council election on 26 October 2024.

At the same meeting, Councillors voted not to elect a Deputy Mayor in Golden Plains Shire for 2023-24.

Assuming the role of Mayor, Cr Cunningham expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by his fellow councillors. He pledged to lead with dedication, transparency and a focus on initiatives that enhance the wellbeing of Golden Plains Shire residents now and into the future.

“Council will continue its commitment to deliver sound financial management allowing for the provision of 70 individual services that are used by residents of our Shire, and continue to work hard to invest in the health and wellbeing of our community,” Cr Cunningham said.

“I also make the pledge as I did during my Council Election campaign to continue to implement a professional style of leadership that holds not only myself but fellow Councillors accountable for our actions and behaviours. This leadership pledge extends to not only our community but also within our Council organisation where we will continue to assist with implementing a positive workplace environment.

“I look forward to the coming year working together with my fellow councillors, CEO Eric Braslis, Executive Council Officers and Council staff to continue to serve our communities to deliver sound governance, financial management and continue to make Golden Plains such a great place to live.”

“To the community, thank you for your continued support and I look forward to serving another term as Mayor of the Golden Plains Shire, working for you, representing and advocating on your behalf.”

Celebration of the Arts We have such creative and talented artists at Shelford Primary!

Our Celebration of the Arts was held at the school last month. The event was a huge success with our students proudly demonstrating the skills they have been learning this year in Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Music.

Thankyou to all of the visitors who came to watch our students perform and admire our gallery displays.

In the Arts this year, our students have designed their own skateboards, created ‘stop, go’ animations, scripted and performed their own plays and learnt how to play a number of instruments including boom whackers, djembes, and percussion instruments.

We can’t wait to see what they produce in The Arts next year!

Emergency Services.

Where would we be without the first responders: The police and paramedics are always on the scene of any major incidents, with the SES and CFA volunteers willing to give up their valuable time to assist also.

This accident happened in February 2021 when a B-double truck that had been travelling north along Dundas St. went through the highway intersection, crashing into a school bus and then into the house known as Craigneish, Witnesses alerted the authorities to the collision with police, paramedics, Country Fire Authority (CFA) and the SES attending the scene.

One person was injured. The male bus driver was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition with lower body injuries. The truck driver managed to escape uninjured. Fortunately, there was no one on board the bus.

VIC SES are the control agency for flood, storm, tsunami, earthquake and landslides throughout Victoria, and provide the largest road rescue network in Australia. Volunteers are the backbone of VIC SES, serving the Victorian community more than 40 years. 95% of VIC SES people are volunteers.

All volunteers receive accredited, recognised training as part of their role, ranging from first aid, general rescue, chainsaw operations, community education, media training and much more. The diversity of VIC SES members is the key to their success.

The same can be said of our local CFA with volunteer members undertaking comprehensive training and as a community we are indebted to their efforts.

Brigade Captain Andrew Collins said. “We’re not a big brigade. We don’t earn a lot of money, so we take advantage of whatever grants or handouts for equipment that we can get, using it in emergences including road crashes and house fires. It’s certainly going to a good cause.”

Captain Collins said that with 22 active firefighters, the brigade is also “desperate” for new volunteers. “You’ve got your regulars that come out at

the drop of a hat every single time but then a lot of members have to go to their various places of work.”

He hopes to gain recruits with the arrival of new residents moving to the area. “As much as it’s possibly going to increase our workflow with the influx of houses in Inverleigh, we’re looking forward to it because we may get new members joining as a result.”

The new equipment appears to be just the start for the Inverleigh Brigade’s expansion.

They are also preparing to relocate to a larger station, and plans are underway to raise funds to replace a fire truck approaching the end of its life cycle.

While these changes won’t occur overnight, the team looks to “getting bigger and better in the future. For a little brigade, we hold our own,” he said.

We thank these volunteer first responders who give up their time to help keep our community safe.

Where do the collected papers go?

Inverleigh-Leigh Valley Lions thank all the donors & collectors of old newspapers & magazines we accumulate in our shed at the sporting complex in Inverleigh.

When we have a B double load, we have a working bee to load up & despatch them to companies in Melbourne where they are recycled into products such as egg cartons.

For the 2022-23 year earnings from this activity came to approximately $12,000 – money which is distributed to worthy causes & disaster relief local, national & world wide.

We have valuable support from Riordan Transport who provide the cartage free of charge.

Inverleigh Public Hall Committee are pleased to advise the community that the Book Bazaar will return in 2024. Save the Date: Saturday May 25!

The 2024 Book Bazaar will be scaled down to minimize the workload on our committee members and volunteers from the community.

It will only be held for one day only. We will only be accepting your generous donation of books in good quality condition please. **See below paragraph for the category of books we are accepting. A table will be set up on the decking in the backyard of the hall facilities for you to drop off your book donations at your convenience.

POLICE REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2023 Hello all, We have had a recent issue with offenders stealing railway tracks from the side of the railway line in Inverleigh that came to our attention by a vigilant local who called after thinking the men’s behaviour in the middle of the night was suspicious. The offender’s had gone to some effort using a truck and bobcat.

Some suspects have been identified and there is an active investigation into this and some other similar incidents in neighbouring areas.

There has been some suspicious behaviour reported in the new housing estates involving vehicles and people getting about in the early hours of the morning as well.

Offenders have been known to target new housing estates where they steal appliances/ tools and other building items from the unoccupied buildings.

If you notice suspicious behaviour please call 000 or contact the Police station on 5265 1211.

Police have been receiving some noise complaints from the estate off Falkirk Crescent, Kinross, Cleveland Drive area. Please have some consideration of your neighbours.

Just because you live in a rural area doesn’t mean there are no rules.

From the EPA website: Noise coming from a residence can be unreasonable at any time of the day if it’s impacting a neighbouring residence. There are also laws which prohibit noise from equipment used at residences at certain times.

This is the same area where Police have received numerous reports in recent times of youths riding trail bikes on the roads including

some erratic and dangerous behaviour. I have publicised a lot on this behaviour in recent times and my request for this behaviour to stop. I am aware of a lot of the identities of the alleged culprits and have spoken personally to some youths and parents. The youths should consider that in a few years they will be driving cars. How much discretion will I give them if I detect them infringing on the roads when a few years earlier as youths they ignored the Police telling them to stop riding illegally on the streets. Something they should seriously ponder.

Please be careful on the roads on the upcoming Christmas/New Year holiday period. Over the recent long weekend I issued 45 fines in 3 days for poor behaviour on the roads mainly from holiday makers passing through the area.

Remember the expected increase in traffic during the upcoming New Year period due to the Beyond the Valley music festival in HESSE. This involves a lot of inexperienced probationary drivers from all over the state and interstate descending on the local roads which they are not familiar with to attend the festival. Due to experiences with the previous event and the sheer numbers of drivers seen on the road New Years Day when the festival finishes it is probably good to avoid the Hamilton Hwy on that day if you can.

Twin Bridges-Inverleigh Historical Society Calendar-January 2024 “Something will have to be done about the Twin Bridges” is an oft repeated mantra by local residents. Notorious for flooding and subsequent car rescues and not considered as a safe route to escape fire, consequently it has been a perennial problem for local government.

Originally called Hamilton’s Bridge (one only) at the bottom of Berthon’s Hill, the Leigh Shire reported in 1924 that the bridge “was on its last legs” and required replacement and a second bridge built to try and solve the problem, alternatively moving the crossing along the south side of the river by 17 chains and building a new bridge. It pains me to report that due to lack of funds and an uncooperative landholder, one hundred years later we do have two bridges, but problem of flooding and access has not gone away.

This image taken by Dagmar Cations shows the picturesque bends on the Inverleigh Teesdale Road. A place where we often meet another car with a wave for ‘giving way’, a pretty spot for photographing the River Red Gums, or bringing back memories of the 1970’s occasional barbeque on a Saturday night.

Newspaper reports about Hamilton’s Bridge also include a Birds Road, of unknown location. Just maybe it was an earlier name for the nearby Bumpy Lane which continues to live up to its description.

Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve Christmas Robins?

When I receive Christmas cards from my UK relatives, they sometimes feature a European Robin – the quintessential ‘robin’, sitting on a spade handle or looking rather cute in the snow with its orangey-red breast. When white people came to Australia, they named any small bird with a red breast – a robin! We know now that Australian Robins are only very distantly related to the European bird, and instead of just one, Australia has twenty.

Only a handful of Australian Robins have red in their plumage. Both the Flame and the Scarlet Robin are occasional winter visitors to our region, and the Pink Robin sometimes passes through on migration from Tasmania. Other robins have varying shades of brown or grey and several have yellow colouring.

Of these, a resident of the Inverleigh Reserve is the Eastern Yellow Robin. These delightful little birds, grey above and yellow below are often seen clinging sideways to tree trunks. When they spot their prey, they fly down and return to a perch to eat the insect or grub. They have a persistent piping call which is heard throughout the day and a loud ‘chop-chop’ call, which is often one of the first calls to be heard in the early morning. Indeed, their scientific name is Eopsaltria australis, which means ‘dawn-harper of the south’.

So my next Christmas card to my relatives in Cornwall will not feature a kangaroo wearing a Santa hat or a koala on a sleigh, but an Eastern Yellow Robin in all its southern beauty. No adornment required.

100th Birthday Celebration for Monica Baker

The family of Monica Baker gathered recently at the Grovedale Hotel to celebrate her 100th birthday on the 9th of November.

Monica was the youngest of six children born to Bert and Ellen Drewry of Birregurra. Her marriage to John (Jack) Baker (dec) took place on the 30th of January 1951.

They welcomed three children, Damian, Geoff (dec) and Geraldine into their lives.

Her Children, along with their partners, 8 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren were there to celebrate her wonderful milestone.

Inverleigh Primary School

At Inverleigh Primary School, our students have many opportunities to shine! We are proud of their efforts in the classrooms, in the playground and in the community! Not only do they give 100% to their learning endeavours, they usually have fun doing it as you can see by the smiles on their faces!

Recently our student leaders – Bella, Finn, Rubi and Alby – represented our school at the Remembrance Day ceremony (special thanks to Alby for stepping in for Will who wasn’t able to be there). They did a great job reading "In Flander’s Field".

Our grades 3-6 students had a Golf Coaching Clinic by golf pro Matt McFarlane. It’s fair to say that there is some talent in the group!

In STEM, our students have been learning about Robotics and Coding. We are very thankful to our PFA (and community members for purchasing raffle tickets) for raising funds to purchase a set of DASH robots and Ozobots!

In French, Students have been creating a city in Minecraft Education. Their learning task will be to plan a walking tour of their city. Students will record themselves guiding the walking tour, speaking of course, in French!

We have also been busy with some transition sessions for our 2024 Foundation class.

We look forward to welcoming several new students and families to our school next year!

Shining a brighter light on night time bowling.

This October, the Inverleigh Bowls Club were proud to have achieved an upgrade to the lighting on their bowling green.

This has been achieved through a successful application to the Berrybank Community Grants Program back in September 2023 which provided funds that were matched by the bowling club to achieve new LED lighting with competition level brightness. The project was completed through the services of Ivan and the team at Power Street Electrics. Their efforts were spread over many phone calls, consultations and site visits with the final installation completed on October 30th. With daylight savings impacting the ability to measure the results (darkness is required) the guys started at 1pm and finished around 9pm. And what a result it is. The light is evenly dispersed across the green, bright enough to see clearly to the other end and limited to the

footprint of the club precinct.

This project was perfectly timed for our club to host the Geelong Bowls Region Men’s Fours Quarter Finals on Wednesday 8th November.

With players coming from across the Geelong region (including Bellarine peninsula and Surf Coast) our club and town were showcased through this event.

We are grateful to the Berrybank Wind Farm for providing this grant opportunity and to our sponsors who have supported our club and subsequently helped us achieve this upgrade. We also thank the club members who work tirelessly to keep the club running.

We are proud of the new lighting and look forward to many fun summer nights bowling into the night.

There is a current nationwide shortage of feline vaccinations.

Initially this was just for F4 vaccinations, but has now extended to F3 vaccinations. This is for all brands including both live and inactive vaccines.

To deal with this shortage, we are prioritizing kitten vaccinations with these stipulations: - Delaying the ‘1st’ vaccination until age 8-10 weeks. Kittens can then still go to their new homes.

- the ‘2nd’ (now final) vaccination at 14-16 weeks – but these will go on a wait list until stock is available.

For adult cats, a yearly health check is recommended when they are due for their vaccination. When the vaccine supply is more stable we will contact you to arrange a discounted vaccination booster.

Leigh News 37 Congratulations Dr Kylie!

We were very excited to find out that Dr Kylie recently won the Zoeitis 'My Vet Rules' for the month of November.

She was nominated by a client for the treatment of an itch condition on their pet that is now responding well to management.

Dr Kylie has always been surrounded by animals growing up on a farm was “always enthralled when the vet would come out” and treat animals.

She has been a vet for 10 years, and has loved working with her dermatology patients, watching their distress be alleviated with treatment.

Dr Kylie understands how stressful a scratchy dog can be and recommends seeing a vet

for any itchy concerns.

Canine Cough

Canine cough is a highly contagious upper respiratory condition. It refers to infection of the upper respiratory tract resulting in the sudden onset of a severe cough.

The cough can appear worse with exercise, over excitement or pressure by the collar on the neck.

It is caused by airborne microbes such as a virus (parainfluenza) or bacterium (bordatella bronchiseptica) and can spread through droplets, direct contact or contaminated surfaces such as water, food bowls or toys.

Symptoms include: • Dry honking cough • Runny nose & sneezing • Lethargy • Loss of appetite • Fever It is highly infectious and dogs commonly contract the condition at boarding kennels, puppy and obedience classes, dog shows or other places where there are groups of dogs.

Vaccinating for canine cough is highly recommended for the prevention of the disease and is usually required prior to going into boarding or attending puppy class.

The vaccination is not 100% protective but vaccinated dogs who contract canine cough will only have a mild infection that runs a much shorter course.

If you suspect your dog has canine cough, immediately isolate them from all other dogs.

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Friday 24 November 2023

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM IN GOLDEN PLAINS Council is proud to team up with local businesses and community centres across the Shire as part of Respect Victoria’s 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence 2023 Campaign (the Campaign).

The Campaign runs annually from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day) and aims to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.

This year, Council sought the talents of local Teesdale artist Bec Wilson to create an artwork that represents the Campaign. The artwork showcases a beautiful, diverse and inclusive design that captures the fundamentals of the Campaign and assists with ongoing efforts to create a safer and equal future.

Local businesses and community centres throughout the Shire have received a copy of the artwork to display publicly throughout the Campaign, including: • • • • • • • •

Golden Plains Shire Council Mayor Cr Brett Cunningham encouraged residents to attend the local businesses and community centres to see the artwork.

“This year we’re doing something different for the 16 Days of Activism Campaign and collaborating with our local businesses and community centres to display the beautiful artwork made by Bec,” Cr Cunningham said.

“Council is proud to participate in this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign in Victoria and encourages all Victorians to work together to prevent violence against women and girls,” he said.

“During this 16 Days of Activism and beyond, let's work together to create a future where we are all safe, equal and respected.”

Residents are urged to follow Council’s social media channels during the 16 days, where we’ll gradually unveil the artwork. Starting with a jigsaw puzzle, each piece will contribute to the final reveal on 10 December.
