BANNOCKBURN SURGERY IS CELEBRATING 40 YEARS. Leigh News 3

Bannockburn Surgery first opened its doors in 1983 – a humble beginning in small rooms located between the original Pharmacy and Supermarket.

The practice soon moved to 19 High Street in 1986 with two consulting rooms, a small treatment room and tiny tearoom for its team members. In 2000, the current building (16 High Street) was opened, – a purpose-built practice complete with five consulting rooms, a sixth room having been added in 2010.

One of the Principal GPs, Dr Cameron Profitt commenced in 1991. With Dr John Henderson joining the practice in 2006 and Dr Ben Fry following suit in 2012. The practice has since grown from strength to strength and has a wonderfully dedicated team of Doctors, Nurses, Reception staff and Practice Manager. They also have access to high-quality Allied Health Practitioners with plans for more services to come.

Bannockburn Surgery has been fortunate to have additional GP Registrars join our team expanding our provision of service even further. This means they are lucky to be in the position to have capacity to offer more appointments including on the day appointments.

The surgery has big plans for a new development next door to the current practice which is currently awaiting the approval of council. They are incredibly excited for the future of not only Bannockburn Surgery but also

Message from Federal Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker MP.

Happy New Year everyone.

I hope you’ve had the chance to celebrate with friends and loved ones.

There’s no doubt that 2024 will offer exciting opportunities for Inverleigh and communities across our region.

I look forward to working closely with your community to ensure those who are doing it tough can access cost-of-living relief through our government’s cheaper childcare subsidy, rent assistance, and many other initiatives.

Throughout the year, we will be delivering an additional 300,000 fee-free TAFE places whilst also addressing housing affordability and rolling out the National Reconstruction Fund so we can manufacture more things in Australia.

And locally, we’ve delivered on our promise to bring faster fibre-to-the-premises NBN to Bannockburn whilst Inverleigh Primary School’s $170,000 undercover basketball court is almost finished – I can’t wait to join with the school to celebrate this much-needed upgrade.

I know that basketball is a popular sport with the kids of Inverleigh, which has produced some great young basketballers over recent years and an undercover court will help to ensure the next generation of local players can train on a quality court that gives them the best chance to enjoy and excel at the sport.

The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years.

Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.

Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have a new block built. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.

The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street.

Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections.

We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

The first month of 2024 is just about over and Hot Cross Buns are in the shops.

As you can see from the front cover, a very successful Australia Day Breakfast Event yesterday, and a very successful fund raiser for the Inverleigh Hall Committee. Thanks to the Beyond the Valley Festival organisers for donating the excess camp equipment left behind.

It's a win/win for them as well as the Inverleigh Hall Committee.

Another service offered to the residents of Inverleigh & District is the Leigh River Water Pumps and Standpipes. There are located at the Leigh River in Lawsons Park.

It is time for our book-keeper to send out invoices again.

If you are a current user and have a key to the pump shed, an email will arrive in your inbox with an invoice for this years fee ($44). This is to cover maintenance of the pumps and keeping them in good order for your use. If you are a new resident to Inverleigh, follow the directions on page 42 of this edition and make use of water for stock or garden use.

Australia Day Breakfast 2024 - a great success!

A larger than ever crowd enjoyed the Australia Day event put on by the Inverleigh Public Hall Committee, the Inverleigh Progress Association and the Inverleigh Historical Society, with help from the Inverleigh CWA and the Inverleigh Playgroup.

As well as eating the magnificent breakfast and morning tea, people could enjoy looking at the Historical Society's "Australiana tea towel display", play with the outdoor items lent by the Inverleigh Playgroup, look around the Inverleigh Public Hall, and catch up with or meet other locals.

A sale of camping gear abandoned at the Beyond the Valley music festival was held as well to raise funds for the Public Hall - thanks to everyone who helped with this as it was most successful and prevented a lot of good camping gear going to landfill.

The term onomastics, meaning the study of the history and origin of personal names, dates back to 1904.

Onomastics can be a very useful tool in genealogical research but it also can lead to some confusion.

DEEMA- OUR PRESIDENT Deema P. Johnson was born in Melbourne in 1969. He joined the Royal Australian Army in 1987 After joining he spent a lot of time in QLD on exercises and training and providing communications, Deema even went on the entire journey of “The Great Australian Camel Race” for the Army which was some 3500 Kilometres.

Medals achieved: In August 1989 he was passenger in an accident where the vehicle rolled 7 times.

Severely injuring Deema with multiple bruising and lacerations to his hands and arms, legs and head. He also had multiple internal injuries and serious spinal injuries consisting of compression and fractures to his spine. He also developed Compartment Syndrome from his ankle injury, after this he was posted to Melbourne to provide Communications for our Counter Terrorism Team from 1990 to 1991.

In 2004 Deema became a Justice of Peace and in 2009-2023 was a volunteer with Vic SES, donating his time and knowledge to the Bannockburn and surrounding community.

In 1992 he was posted to Cambodia as Peace Keeper and Peace Maker working with Military Liaison Officers on Reconnaissance and Intelligence. He was a member of the first ANZAC Team in Cambodia. Deema was part of UNAMIC Force Communications Unit.

The reason Deema now volunteers his time as the President of RSL Inverleigh is because: “the faces and names of our past soldiers and those soldier’s sacrifices will not be remembered, as they deserve to be remembered, if our Inverleigh and Surrounds Sub-Branch falls. Inverleigh Public Hall Committee are pleased to advise the community that the Book Bazaar will return in 2024. Save the Date: Saturday May 25!

The 2024 Book Bazaar will be scaled down to minimize the workload on our committee members and volunteers from the community.

It will only be held for one day only. We will only be accepting your generous donation of books in good quality condition please. **See below paragraph for the category of books we are accepting. A table will be set up on the decking in the backyard of the hall facilities for you to drop off your book donations at your convenience.

The Lost Summer

Inverleigh Community Event As a result of work done by the Inverleigh Progress Association (IPA) in 2022 and 2023 to consult with the community and develop a Community Plan for Inverleigh, we received a grant of money from the Golden Plains Shire Council. It was decided a community get together was important to thank everyone and give an opportunity for newcomers and locals alike to come together. The original idea was to have it in the park adjacent to the Visitors Centre and Playspace, but as the weather forecast was not looking promising, so it was transferred to the Inverleigh Public Hall.

A number of local people and organisations became involved with the IPA to make it a successful evening. Thank you to Rohan Windle Entertainment for providing some great music, also to Robyn Erwin for encouraging her Primary School singing group to contribute with some songs. Thanks also to our local Leigh Valley Lions Club who offered to cook sausages on their barbeque and these were very popular, with or without onions. Face painter, Stacy Symons was kept very busy and there were games for young children inside as well as outside.

Our local Seniors sold drinks as a fundraiser for their group and the CFA dropped in with a fire truck during the evening.

The Inverleigh Historical Society, Leigh Districts Landcare and the IPA provided information in the hope of attracting new members.

All together the event attracted many people and was so successful that we are planning for another at the end of this year.

If you attended this event and enjoyed the evening you might consider joining a local group, particularly the IPA. We need people with financial and / or secretarial skills, desktop publishing and other handypeople.

Our community plan emphasised the importance of community with many contributors commenting about how much they enjoyed living in Inverleigh. If this is you, please consider how you could contribute some of your time and expertise. There are roles that Inverleigh take a little of your time and Progress others that require more regular Association attendance. It is your choice.

The dental hygienist I saw today Was very nice I have to say She gave me glasses as I closed my eyes And told me to open my mouth wide Her mask in place she moved toward me Explaining what would happen going forward She sandblasted away with her little tool Was this something completely new But the plaque that had gathered was making me look bad As she scraped and prodded, she chattered away Have you been flossing she was heard to say “Oh yes of course” I lied, by now wishing I had died This girl was an actress it must be said She just nodded her pretty head I hope they pay her quite a lot, She would deserve whatever she got Not many girls can keep a straight face When confronted with so much rot I sat with my hands clenched, Too afraid to nod my head My mouth attested to my neglect Now I also had a stiff neck The muscles in my jaw were aching as well How much longer was this living hell The sweet little thing toiled away Not making too much headway But this one was a worker it was clear to see My teeth were not getting the better of she She scraped, she sawed and she hosed my mouth Now she was intense but quiet like a mouse We are done she said I’ll get the dentist in I don’t know what he saw with that glance to be sure But I heard the till ching $73 dollars As he blinked twice his eyes like ice I lay with mouth open as the boss nodded with satisfaction A fraction of the work for so much dough Not bad for such a little show…….

Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve BIG BLACK BIRDS

They’re obvious, they often hang around in gangs, they are usually loud and they elicit strong emotions in humans. Some people admire them, some people hate them.

But they are just birds, doing what birds do.

Four Big Black Birds can be seen at the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve. The Little Raven is usually seen singly or in small groups. Its Wa-Wa call tells us that it is around. The Wadawurrung people call it Waa– perfectly named. Some people call them Crows, but those found here are properly called Ravens.

The White-winged Chough is a resident in the Reserve. Not related to Ravens, these birds spend much of their time on the ground in groups of ten or so birds, turning over leaves with their downcurved bill to find grubs and insects.

They build large mud-nests and all the group help the breeding pair with nest construction and with feeding the young.

The nests are usually very obvious as they are built on a horizontal branch. They have a mournful descending whistle and the white in their wings is only visible when they fly up into the trees.

The third Big Black Bird is the Pied Currawong.

Usually only a winter visitor, it is feared and disliked by the local birds as it is an egg and nestling predator. Its ‘clang clang’ call alerts the smaller birds to its presence.

One way of distinguishing these three birds is by eye colour - Ravens have white eyes; Currawongs Yellow, and Choughs eyes are red.

One further Big Black Bird makes an appearance from time to time at the Reserve – everyone’s favourite, the Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo. They move around in response to food supplies and if you have native pines or hakeas in your garden, you are bound to get a visit sometime from these gorgeous birds.

Following on from Dr Kylie's November win with the Zoetis My Vet Rules competition, we are excitied to announce that she has been named the overall winner for 2023!

The Zoetis My Vet Rules competition is designed to recognise the exceptional efforts of vets and vet nurses who go above and beyond to assist in lifechanging improvements for dogs who are affected by dermatological conditions.

Dr Kylie was nominated for her care of a Bannockburn Vet Clinic patient Pumpkin who was suffering from allergies. Pumpkin is now relieved from her itch and has her happy face back.

When the temperature rises, we need to take steps to protect our pets. We have put together a few helpful tips.

Keep them hydrated with plenty of fresh water. Add some ice blocks to keep the water extra cool.

Did you know Dalmatian puppies are born white?

They develop their spots when they are around 10 days old however liver coloured spots can take a little longer to become obvious.

No two Dalmatians will have the same number or sizes of spots. Each dog has a unique pattern similar to human fingerprints.

The Dalmatian gets its name from the historical region of Dalmatia, in modern day Croatia, where the breed originated.

Dalmatians are prone to unilateral hearing loss or bilateral deafness. This is caused by the absence of melanin-producing cells located in the dog’s inner ear

Fill a small paddling pool with cool water for your dog to splash in.

Most cats hate getting wet, so they are unlikely to want to take a dip to cool off.

But wet a small towel in cold water and dab over your cat's fur.

Make up some ice lollies with some of their favourite treats. Freeze tuna in brine or some low-salt chicken stock for any icy snack.

Your pets can get sunburnt, particularly pale-coloured ones, with ears and noses especially susceptible. Use a sunblock suitable for pets if they are outside when the sun is at its strongest.

Avoid Car Trips. Did you know it only takes six minutes for a dog or cat to die in a hot car. Never leave your pet unattended in the car as temperatues in the car rapidly increase - even on mild days.

Heat Stress. All pets, like people can develop heat stress. Short nosed and flat faced dogs like Pugs, French Bulldogs and Boxers are more susceptible.

Heatstroke can come on quickly and result in brain damage or death. Here are a few signs of heatstroke to look out for: • Excessive or heavy panting • Increased skin temperature • Difficulty breathing • Drooling • Fatigue • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • Glazed eyes • Dizziness • A deep red or purple tongueother dogs.
