A History & plans of Bannockburn Surgery

Principal GPs, Dr Cameron Profitt commenced in 1991. With Dr John Henderson joining the practice in 2006 and Dr Ben Fry following suit in 2012. The practice has since grown from strength to strength and has a wonderfully dedicated team of Doctors, Nurses, Reception staff and Practice Manager. They also have access to high-quality Allied Health Practitioners with plans for more services to come.

Bannockburn Surgery has been fortunate to have additional GP Registrars join our team expanding our provision of service even further. This means they are lucky to be in the position to have capacity to offer more appointments including on the day appointments.

The surgery has big plans for a new development next door to the current practice which is currently awaiting the approval of council. They are incredibly excited for the future of not only Bannockburn Surgery but also continuing to support the growing community of Bannock-

Head down to ZINEverleigh 27th July 10am to 2pm

Why would I head down to "ZINEverleigh" this year?

1. Curiosity. There's so many interesting, weird and wonderful zines (pronounced zeens) and art to see at a zine fair. Different small subcultures come together at a zine fair and the result is amazing.

2. Great food. Soup, Sausage rolls and hotdogs from the CWA along with cakes, biscuits and slices from Inverleigh Playgroup.

3. To add to your zine collection. A standout for me last year was a great photographic collection of backyards - called 'Backyard Peepers'. There were three editions last year and there's been a couple more added to that this year.

4. Art prints. Freddie Mercury, cats and potted plants are some features you could expect. (Yes please!)

5. Art Booklets. There are a range of one-ofa-kind handmade art booklets to be endlessly admired.

6. To find out more about zines. What are they? 'Zeens' are handmade, independently produced, often photocopied booklets on a range of subject matter, generally not created for making a profit, but to share interests, art, photos, ideas, poetry, stories, protest, points of view. can be hand drawn, collaged, painted, typed, and are fascinating and fun.

7. Community. A great low-cost day out in this fabulous local town, supporting artists and young people.

Invite your mum, bring your friend who likes weird, good things and we'll see you there! Saturday 27th July, 10am - 2pm at the Inverleigh Public Hall.

More info at: instagram.com/zineverleigh or facebook.com/zineverleigh

If you'd like to contribute to a zine about Inverleigh we would love your input - Photos. Stories about growing up in the town. Strange happenings. Recipes...... pop us an email at zineverleigh@gmail.com with your ideas. Big thanks to Inverleigh Progress Association and Beyond the Valley Festival for their support.

Our group was nominated in the Golden Plains Shire Council Community Awards for the Community Impact Award, groups are recognized for their efforts in supporting the community, eg Wombats Wish.

Although we did not win, we were honored to be recognized and were presented with a certificate at the awards ceremony in January.

On 6th March it was our privilege to present a cheque to Jill Crooks, founder of Wombats Wish in support of their work in aid of children and young people following the death of a parent or carer. Wombats Wish assists bereaved children to find a way to live with death and grief, to move forward and take the next steps on their bereavement journey.

Our group raises funds through stalls at local markets and events and our annual Pop Up Oppie Market. Our group also supports organizations by donating knitted or crocheted, rugs, beanies, scarves & other items

requested by hospitals or other institutions.

Our Pop Up Oppie Market, including Devonshire tea, was held on Saturday 25th May at the Teesdale Community Hall. We had lots of pre-loved books, clothes, shoes, linen, kitchenware and bric a brac. Our funds from this day will support a local or state group, also unsold items will be recycled to organizations that can use them to support people in need.

We work to support groups to improve conditions by community service especially as they effect the welfare of women and children, both locally and state wide.

Our group meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday night of the month at the Teesdale Community Hall at 7.30pm. New members are welcome.

Hello again, What a great Book Bazaar!

Lots of hard work by the Inverleigh Hall Committee and the many volunteers who came and assisted with the setup. I was surprised to see customers leaving the Hall with literally Bags and Boxes of books.

I observed one buyer trying to fit all of his purchases and camp stove and fridge into his van, but he did have success in the end.

I would also like to acknowledge the passing of a member of our Seniors of Inverleigh. Sandra Corrie passed away recently and we will miss her.

Sandra was an important part of Inverleigh Seniors and appreciated by all, especially at birthday time as Sandra was our birthday lady and faithfully prepared Cards for each member on their birthday.

And also, I thought that the boys and girls of the district would enjoy finding Maggie each month, but I'm pleased to know that quite a few of more senior years also enjoy looking fo Maggie too. PeterT

Help us make a Zine about Inverleigh.

To start with, what is a zine?

A "zine" is all sorts of things, but most often a self published work featuring an interest or passion from the writer/artist/creator. They can be made up of art, story, fan fiction, poetry, comic, humour, protest. alternative media or self revelation. Zines are often made to add unheard voices to the mix and usually not made for a profit. Zines can be swapped, sold, shared or given away.

Last year we held a Zine Fair in Inverleigh and this year we are having another one. Yay!

Saturday July 27th we’ll be back at the Inverleigh Town Hall with support from the Inverleigh Progress Association and the Beyond the Valley Festival.

Last year's Zine Fair was a fabulous day that saw stall holders and visitors to the town from Apollo Bay, Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne as well as Lethbridge, Teesdale and the Bellarine.

This year we are expecting another amazing time and we would love to make a local zine. This will be a free zine that will be distributed to stall holders and visitors at ZINEverleigh.

If you have artwork, stories, comics, poetry (or something else) that you would be interested in having included in this zine please get in touch at "zineverleigh@gmail.com" Thanks, Bec Wilson

Inverleigh Police Station 1985

In late 1985 it was reported in the Geelong Advertiser that the Inverleigh police station had a new Australian flag to display on its flag pole. The flag was presented by the Inverleigh RSL Club at a ceremony attended by Chief Superintendent Max Porter, of Barwon police district and Inspector Laurie Hamilton. The flag was presented to Inverleigh’s Senior Constable Lyn Stewart by the president of the RSL club, Mr Wally Wilson. Local primary school pupils were on hand to cheer the flag raising.

The Leigh News of December 1985 stated: “At the recent Flag Presentation at the Police Station the grades 4, 5 and 6 children impressed all present with their knowledge of the significance of our national flag and appreciated their tour of the new and old lock-ups. Well done kids”

Inverleigh Police Station 1985 Photo: Courtesy Geelong Advertiser

Flag Protocols

• It should not be subjected to indignity or displayed in a position inferior to any other flag or ensign.

In the background is the recently built police residence. The former building had been tendered in May 1914 with the wording being to construct an “Inverleigh Police Station” not “new residence”. The actual police office was a small room at the end of the verandah, approximately 7ft by 7ft (2.1 X 2.1 metres). In the Public Works Department Summary Contracts book A.J. Digby is given as the builder with costs being £427.15.0 (under $900). The “stables etc.” at the police station appear in the P.W.D. Summary Contracts book as being built in the 1916/17 financial year. The contract was awarded to G.T. Mousley for £80.14.9 (under $175). What the “etc.” represented is not known. (Edited from an article by Elaine Stewart, Leigh News March 1985)

The Australian flag was first flown in Melbourne on 3rd September 1901 with a six pointed star, the seventh point was added in 1908 and in 1954 the flag became recognised by, and legally defined in, the Flags Act 1953, as the Australian National Flag.

• The flag normally takes precedence over all other national flags when flown in Australia.

• Do not fly two flags from the same flagpole.

• Only fly the flag at night when it is illuminated.

• Do not fly the flag upside down, even as a signal of distress.

• Do not allow the flag to fall or lie on the ground or be used as a cover (although it can be used to cover a coffin at a funeral).

• Do not fly the flag if it is damaged, faded or dilapidated.

• When the material of a flag deteriorates it may either be placed in a permanent place of storage or should be destroyed privately and in a dignified way such as cutting it into small unrecognisable pieces, placing it in an appropriate sealed bag or closed container and then putting it in the normal rubbish collection.

'WELFARE CARE PACK'

Your Inverleigh RSL Sub-Branch is keen to offer our local primary schools an opportunity for students to show support for a deployed Defence member by putting together a 'welfare care pack’ and sending it to them overseas.

Such packs may include well-wishing letters, some home-made Anzac biscuits, a jar of Vegemite, some Mars bars, the latest ‘Leigh News’ issue, a group poster, and the like.

‘Defence members who are overseas, a very long way from home and missing their loved ones, really welcome these homely, personalised gifts. To receive one is exciting, greatly appreciated and a real highlight’ said Deema Johnston, President of Inverleigh RSL Sub-Branch.

This can be a high value opportunity for our young students to learn about the great positive work our Defence members do overseas, in areas such as humanitarian and peacekeeping support.

'We hope this pack can be sent and received overseas in time for this coming Remembrance Daythat would make it extra special’ said Deema.

'We are very keen to hear from any local family that currently has a serving member of the Defence Force, so we can look at including them in this exciting activity. If you do, or know of anyone else who does, please contact me at: deemapjohnston@ bigpond.com or on 0430 211 916'.

HELP YOUR RSL RENOVATE OUR BIG GREEN GUN

Your RSL Sub-Branch is working towards having our 25 Pounder Gun fully renovated. Everyone knows this iconic Army artefact that sits proudly outside our RSL.

25 Pounders manufactured in Melbourne and Adelaide were Australia’s artillery Gun through much of World War 2, serving our troops with distinction in the Pacific and Middle East conflicts.

However, time and weather have been very unkind to our Gun. Rusted parts need refurbishing, missing parts need repair or replacing, tyres need replacing, and it needs a full repaint - all back to original specifications.

We invite any and all Leigh News readers who can, to please help us with this important project. We need some spare shed space for a few months, and sand-blasting and spray-painting gear and skills. Any funds you can donate for this would be very helpful indeed and will be gratefully acknowledged.

His Majesty King Charles III has accepted patronage of the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL).

This continues the RSL’s long association with the monarchy following on from the more than 70-year patronage of the League by the King’s mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

RSL National President Greg Melick said the League

was delighted King Charles had accepted the invitation to become Patron.

“The RSL was recently advised of King Charles' acceptance following a review of more than 1000 patronages held by the late Queen and the former Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall," Greg Melick said.

“Australia’s veteran community greatly values our Royal connection and looks forward to King Charles’ continuing interest in and support for veterans’ affairs.

“I am sure RSL members will join with me in welcoming King Charles patronage.

“Australian Defence Force personnel played an important role in King Charles’ coronation just one year ago, recognising our prominence in the Commonwealth and our strong association with the monarchy. This association will continue with the King, now the Patron of the RSL,” Greg Melick said.

Home Heating Safety

You need to be careful with all types of home heating and it’s important to be aware of the risks involved with using fixed and portable heating appliances.

Heaters can include:

• fixed electrical appliances

• fixed gas powered appliances

• an open fire

• wood heater/slow combustion heaters

• portable heaters including electrical, gas and kerosene.

Fires caused by heating increase during winter months

Heating safety tips

• ensure heaters are installed, maintained and operated according to manufacturer’s instructions

• turn off all heating devices before leaving home or going to sleep

• drying clothes and other items must be kept at least one metre away from all heating

• children must be supervised near all types of heating. Maintain a safe distance between children and heating

• for portable heating appliances choose models that have automatic safety switches that turn the heater off if tipped over

• keep portable electric heaters away from wet areas to avoid the possibility of electric shock.

Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Adult Leaders from 1st Bannockburn are set to attend the 26th Australian Jamboree in Maryborough Queensland in January next year and are fundraising to help offset the fees.

A Jamboree is a once in a lifetime event for a Scout. Held every 4 years, Scouts spend 10 days doing awesome activities, experiencing new challenges and making friends for life.

Our fundraising activities to date include holding BBQ’s at community events, raffles, and selling Cadbury chocolate boxes, hot cross buns, socks, and donations via the Container Deposit Scheme. Other fundraising events which will begin soon are a battery and scrap metal drive.

The group is planning to hold a trivia night

Open fire safety tips

• always use a fire screen in front of an open fire

• extinguish open fires before leaving home or going to sleep

• ensure ashes are cold before discarding

• chimneys and flues should be cleaned annually

• keep wood and other combustibles at least one metre away from fire

• children must be supervised near open fires. Maintain a safe distance between children and heating

Golden Pens - Write side up

G’Day from the penners for our first month of winter. Time to snuggle up in front of a warm blazing fire, with a good book in your lap, perhaps a purring cat or sleepy dog keeping you company and a piping hot cup of your favourite beverage. Who, I ask, could ask for more. Listening and watching the rain gently falling, the scent of eucalypts rising in the damp air, reminding us all of the great place we live in. Sounds like heaven to me!

The group is chugging along nicely and there is plenty of merriment to be had in the short time we are together each fortnight. I, for one, always look forward to our meetings as we are a great group of people. If you would like to come and see what we are about, please do. We can be contacted via our email address goldenpens4@gmail.com and we always welcome new members.

This month’s poem comes from Bridh Hancock, singing the praises of our great choric magpie. We hope you like it. Until next month. Cheers, Wendy.

The Australian Magpie.

Magpie: beauteous chorister and songster supreme: Hale to thee! Your minions proclaim you king: and Thus you are throughout the Land of Oz. Where are parks, paddocks, woodland and farms, There you warble forth the very gold of the sun.

As Aboriginals lived here languidly,

Feeding on your every honeyed song, so We sit, still, and thrill, your voice so strong; Prodigious poet and worm-hunting singer most splendid; Famous, fearless, and applauded by everyone.

Australia’s black and white minstrel, your hymns of Freedom, warning, love, and love of singing Inspire all hearts and ears. Our ‘Mozart of the Bush’, with Four full octaves of rich and fruity timbre, Yours are the songs of this land of grass and timber.

“Quardle-oodle-ardle-wardle-oodle…” Sings the magpie; and if I could then so would I. You, with your pair of impeccable syrinxes, Can sing a duet alone, and says to all;

“I am here; I am beautiful; and, with my sharp eye and beak, beware!

Bridh Hancock.

POLICE REPORT FOR JUNE 2024

Hello all,

I have had a report of theft of tools from a motor vehicle from a work site in Shelford. Tools are often a target of thieves when they break into vehicles and also into sheds on farm properties. Please do your utmost to secure your property in your vehicles and in your shed.

A White Nissan utility was reported stolen from the Inverleigh sporting club precinct following it being left after a football match in early May. Any information about the theft of this vehicle would be appreciated. Have caught a couple of drink drivers recently where people thought they would not be over and also thought they would not get caught. If you have consumed alcohol and are in doubt best not to drive.

I am still encountering youths and some adults on electric scooters claiming they are unaware of rules relating to the riding them. As said in previous issues of the Leigh News a simple internet search on electric scooter rules in Victoria brings up the laws. Basically no one under 16 can ride them. They cannot be ridden on footpaths, no tandem/dinking. There has been so much publicity of injuries and even deaths involving electric scooters in the media including a recent hit run involving a rider hitting a pedestrian and a hit run fatal on a rider in a Geelong suburb.

The other night I was trying to intercept a vehicle on the Hamilton Hwy going over the Leigh River bridge suddenly I came across a kid coming over the bridge in dark clothing on an electric scooter barely visible until the

last minute. If you don’t want the knock on your door one night informing you that your child has been injured/killed don’t let them have/ride one until they are a responsible adult!!!!

Just recently I pulled over an adult dinking his child to school on the footpath on one who then claimed he was unaware of the laws. I tell you my patience is running out and I will just start fining everyone on one until the message gets through if that is what it is going to take!

As for letting kids put petrol motors on their push bikes you are turning them into a motor bike and the relevant laws of registration and licensing apply. Basically don’t do it and if they have one currently pull it off and just let them ride it as a normal bicycle. Another youth thought it was okay to ride a motor bike on the footpath down to the store. If your child has a motorbike you need to control when and where they can ride it and don’t allow them access to it when you are not around.

Spectacular sport

It’s been a big term of sport at S.P.S

Our Senior students had a fantastic day at our District Athletics Carnival recently. They looked super smart in their new sports tops and got to catch up with some old friends from Meredith, Anakie and Lethbridge Primary Schools. Our students gave their best efforts all day and came home with big, tired smiles and even a few ribbons.

We were thrilled to have Hockey Geelong visit us to teach our students more about this wonderful game. Everyone had a great time learning new skills!

Finally, congratulations to Cobar for representing our school in Cross Country. He came 13th in his age group which is a fantastic achievement!

It’s

harvest time!

Our Juniors had a wonderful afternoon picking our crop of potatoes and tomatoes and our feijoas and passionfruit should be ready soon.

Our students learn such valuable lessons from growing their own produce!

Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve

What came first, the chicken or the egg? Neither. The chicken first had to have somewhere to live, settle down and lay eggs. This tortured metaphor aside, if you want birds, lizards, marsupials and insects to visit, you need to give them things to eat and places to live.

When starting a habitat garden, the first thing is to take stock of what you have, and who uses it. If you’re lucky enough to have established trees or a bushy thicket that attracts passers-by, then that’s your starting point to build from. When you want to start fresh, it is best to know who uses what. For instance, carnivores such as magpies want tall trees to survey from, finches and wrens want grass seeds to eat and thick bushes to hide in and honeyeaters want nectar to eat and shelter from their bigger competitors.

Commonly, gardens have tall trees with grass beneath, but this only provides for large aggressive birds that scare away many of the critters we like to watch and host in our gardens. So a balance of upper, middle and understory plants are important in making good habitat. Here are a few helpful tips that will put you on your way to habitat garden success:

•Always plant multiples of what you’re using. If a plant suits a certain bird, then plant five, not just one. Build up the food bank so you can really host all comers. And, if its rocks for reptiles, make a reef or a wave not just a single rock.

•For garden good looks, plant low at the front, and build up to your boundary or the middle of your garden bed. This gives visual balance, helps you see who’s in town and give the natural mix of low to upper storey.

•Plant local where you can, because these plants have evolved with the local garden visitors and will always pair best. But beware: big, bright grevillea are stunning and native. But, big flowering grevilleas encourage aggressive honeyeaters who will scare off the little birds. So, also plant small flowering, dense plants to help provide

shelter for the more meek and mild to find a space.

•Finally, food and shelter are one thing, but we all need water to live. A well-maintained bird bath or water point will bring in more birds than any seed hanger. Place it off the ground, near a perching spot so the birds can check it out from a safe spot before coming down for a drink or a wash, or near your rockery shelter for the reptiles.

Once you identify what your patch needs, it's time to fill it out. Visit the Golden Plains indigenous planting guide and the Birds In Backyards websites for tips and ideas. Autumn is a great time for planting native plants, the soil still has some warmth and the cooler temperatures and more regular rainfall give them the best chance to establish before the summer heat.

Happy planting. Ben McCarthy

HOW HUMOUR LEADS TO HARMONY

Having served on the Deakin University Ethics Committee into research involving humans for nearly two decades, I was asked a few years ago to be a panel member for the Victorian Ethics Network. My contribution to new members of ethics committees was to allow humour and make what is often hard and sometimes tedious work, light and enjoyable. A good and healthy sense of humour often ranks near the top of the list of desirable traits in any relationship context – who doesn’t want to be involved in a community group that is enjoyable? Laughter can assist maintaining harmony in all that interactions with others can throw our way.

1. Humour helps you avoid unnecessary fights

If in a discussion we are tempted to make a sarcastic comment, snide comeback, or just the irresistible urge to have the last word – opt for some humour – just be sure that the other person or group members will think it’s funny, too. As a Priest, in order to provide an alternative point of view, I have offered, “Can I play the Devil’s advocate?” A self-deprecating joke or a random silly comment can be just the switch to avoid fighting instead of discussion.

2. Humour calms annoyance

Whether we admit it or not we all have those irksome little habits or the personality traits that drive others nuts and get on the nerves of even our significant others. It is so easy to choose to be critical. However, when we try to see the funny side of another’s annoying habits, being able to healthily poke a little fun at each other – and ourselves – we might even develop some insider jokes that can create bonding.

3. Humour fosters friendship

Following on from this bonding, many researchers have found that friendship contributes to relationship longevity. When relationships are strong, interactions are more likely to

be warm and loving, even during challenging or stressful times. How much more would the purposes of our community organisation get done, how much more might the membership grow, if the group reverberates fun and playfulness and fosters friendship through laughter.

4. Humour helps lessen negative emotions I want to begin saying there are no negative emotions; it is how we act on those emotions that make them negative. However, sometimes we allow our emotions to get the better of us. When feeling stressed out, overstimulated, or overwhelmed, we might bring those emotions into our relationship with our partner or our community organisation in ways that are damaging. In those moments we can try to view the situation through a humorous lens and help keep those emotions where they belong.

They say laughter is the best medicine, and while it can’t cure all our relational problems, humour is a salve to enabling enduring and harmonious relationships.
