Best Practice Gorse Seminar, Nov 16 Meredith

Join us for an informative and hands-on workshop dedicated to controlling Gorse in the Moorabool region. Hosted by Moorabool Catchment Landcare Group (MCLG) and Geelong Landcare Network (GLN) in collaboration with the Partnerships Against Pests (PAP) program and the Victorian Gorse Taskforce (VGT), this workshop will provide you with the knowledge and tools necessary to manage this invasive weed effectively.

The workshop will kick off at 10:00 am with introductions by Jackson Cass, including an Acknowledgement of Country, a welcome to participants, and an overview of the collaboration between PAP, MCLG, GLN and VGT. Following this, our guest speaker from the Victorian Gorse Taskforce will present on the history, impacts, legal status/requirements, and identification of Gorse.

Lunch will be provided to participants, providing a chance for general discussion among participants. Participants will receive a laminated A2 printout of their property to map Gorse infestations and assist in property management. Photos of each completed property map will be taken for mapping purposes with the landholder's consent. MCLG and GLN will work with landholders who complete this mapping component to potentially obtaining funding in 2025 to assist them with on-ground control of Gorse.

Please register before Nov 12 to receive your property map on the day of the event!

The workshop will conclude with a property visit just outside of Meredith where we will have a practical demonstration of Gorse mulching and spraying from professional contractors. This is a great opportunity to ask any practical questions regarding hand-on Gorse control. https://events.humanitix.com/best-practice-gorse-seminar-partnerships-against-pests-workshop-2

How exciting is our new Skate Park/Pump Bike Track and Basketball court, and it is already being recognised as a great asset to our lovely town.

I hope as many as possible can get to the first major event at the new park for:

on Saturday the 2nd of November. I'll be there to watch, not to participate and I'm sure it will be a great success.

Thanks to Liz McDonald for yet another interesting story and facts on 'Hay Bales' in this months Calendar article. I certainly learned a few things about hay and silage I didn't know. And next month will be the last edition of the Leigh News for the Christmas break. This year has just flown by so quickly. Look out in the shops because the Hot Cross Buns will soon be on sale too! Have a great month..... where's Maggie?

Barons of the Leigh River flats. Baron:

1. A member of the lowest order of the British nobility. Baron is not used as a form of address, barons usually being referred to as ‘Lord’.

2. An important or powerful person in a specified business or industry such as ‘press baron’.

Apparently there is a third definition - that is, a compressed pack of 21 small square hay bales is called a Baron. That is not the only unusual use of the lexicon in the hay/straw farming industry. There are either Square (really a rectangle) or Round bales. Squares come as large or small, with the large having the choice of three saleable sizes, all requiring some juggling to fit on the transport trucks. With round bales the usual is 4’x4’, depending on your baler settings, and wrapped two and a half times in a net fabric which helps repel any wetness. Not to be confused with the coloured plastic wraps (called dinosaur pooh in our family) which contain silage. The modern balers are computerised. Oh for the days or sheaves, stooks and haystacks.

end users can be anything from the horse industry, zoos, hobby farms and all livestock feeding.

A large square bale can weigh up to 600kg so safety becomes a factor in the handling of a bale. A round bale is the equivalent of 13 or 14 small square bales and can fit on the tray of a ute, but they are still heavy. In early days it may have taken eight workers to build a loaf shaped haystack what we see today is the work of one man and his mechanical assistants.

In the glory days of small squares, either hay or straw, all farm children grew up knowing the Weekly Times Handbook chart of stacking to keep the bales steady on the trailer or truck. It was the time of football club fundraisers when players honed their muscles over summer to get the hay into the shed before any rain and raise money for their club. Wet bales rapidly loose quality.

A good hay requires quality pasture, rain at the right time, heat to cure the grass, baling and moving into convenient groups for transport. Anything from five to ten days from mowing the pasture to finish baling. If being used off farm,

I did take this image some 7 years ago as part of photos around Inverleigh thinking they were large squares but now I have the correct terminology. My thanks to the ’hay barons’ who helped with this article, but it is unlikely that I could ever call them ‘Lord’.

The 2025 Inverleigh Historical Society has been printed with a lot of recent photos as after 15 years we have used most of our collection of historic photos. A great Christmas present at $15. If your family has any old images we would appreciate the opportunity to have them scanned to our collection.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections. We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

WANNON WANNABIES

When it comes to the seat of Wannon, politics are about pastures and potholes and there are plenty on the highways between Inverleigh and Warrnambool where independent candidate, Alex Dyson, resides. Our town’s recent inclusion in the seat of Wannon places Inverleigh on the edge of a buffet that is proving a moveable feast. We’re the cheese and biscuits at the eastern end of a Western District smorgasbord. It’s goodbye to Corrangamite and Labor’s Libby Coker and hello Wannon and Liberal incumbent Dan Tehan. How did that all happen? Redistributions can occur when divisions of a state are malapportioned. We just have to trust that the number crunchers in the Electoral Commission know what they’re doing with their carving knives and according to the A.E.C site. ‘The number of electors enrolled in eacºh electoral division in Victoria must be between 105,205 and 128,583.’

https://www.aec.gov.au/redistributions/2023/ vic/announcement.html

Our most recent boundary change occurred in September this year and the map of

the newly annexed electorate boundaries has been included above. It now includes Inverleigh, Winchelsea and Anglesea. The upshot of this electoral manoeuvre is that we’ve gone from being in the swinging seat of Corangamite which has been held equally by Liberal and Labor over the past 20 years, to being gobbled up by Wannon, a safe Liberal seat since Malcolm Fraser won it in 1955. Business may have continued as usual for the traditional parties in Western Victoria but for the coming of the Community Independents in recent elections. They have become the exceptions that make the rules and Wannon is no exception. Into that former Fraser fray came candidate Alex Dyson in 2019. In his first campaign he expressed his action plan on the end of the Warrnambool breakwater via some compelling interpretive dance moves that ended with a fully suited plunge into the ocean.

Viewers could read into his choreography a range of policy motivators from environmentalism to road safety and who is to say dance is any less sincere than any other form of political raconteuring? It got my attention and Confucius

did say. ‘Never give a sword to a man who cannot dance.’

https://www.facebook.com/alexanderedwarddyson/videos/474610580025120/

Dyson is a former ABC Triple J announcer, funnyman and co-owner of a Melbourne’s Comedy Republic but what’s really funny is how he has crept up in the poles over 2 elections to become the 2nd preferred candidate in 2022. Dan Tehan won 44.5% of the vote that year where Dyson polled 19.3% beating the Labor Candidate Gilbert Wilson by a fraction of a percent and The Greens’ Hilary McAllister by 13%.

The voting population of Wannon in the last election was close to 110,000 and the seat’s extension adds roughly 8,000 more voters to the electorate so it’s understandable why Dan Tehan and Alex Dyson are doing meet and greets in Inverleigh. Alex has been gaining votes and popularity but for all his love of comedy, he doesn’t see politics as a joke.

Whatever the election in 2025 brings, the seat of Wannon is likely to be a hot one as independents redraw the lines and the A.E.C redraw the borders. In 2022’s election no independent Corangamite candidate came within a cooee of Dyson’s polling so he’s definitely one to watch in 2025. Rob Cameron doesn’t mind asking him the hard questions.

Pictured above: Rob Cameron and independent candidate, Alex Dyson.

Grade 1 and 2 students at Inverleigh Primary School had an exciting excursion at the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve on Wednesday the 9th of October. Members of the Friends of the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve group attended alongside teachers to help facilitate the visit.

To begin the day, volunteers gave a presentation in the classrooms at Inverleigh Primary. Students were shown a brief PowerPoint displaying photos of flora and fauna with birdsong recordings – all captured in the reserve by volunteers. One lucky class got to see specimens brought in by our volunteer Richard that included bird feathers and a bagworm moth cocoon.

Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve

Students, teachers and Friends group volunteers then boarded a bus which took us to the intersection of Carrah Track and Teesdale-Inverleigh Road, which had been pre-sighted in September as the most interesting place to show the children around. After a safety induction by teachers, we all ventured into the bush. Within 5 minutes, a large male Eastern Grey kangaroo welcomed us with his presence. Bravely standing on guard, the kangaroo, upon hearing all the noise we were making, hopped away deeper into the bush. I think somehow this kangaroo sighting made all the children switchon and go into nature-mode because every one of them were suddenly excited to be there.

Next up we spotted an ants’ nestpockmarked by echidna digging holes.

The first highlight of the day. Nearby we also found a handful of shed kangaroo fur which became an interesting sensory experience for the students. Volunteer David’s group then noticed some flowering specimens of common riceflower (Pimelea humilis) and several spur goodenias (Goodenia paradoxa). One group led by volunteer Stuart located a brilliant specimen of clover glycine (Glycine latrobeana) while another found an arching flax lily (Anthropodium longifolia var. grandis).

Excursion by Inverleigh Primary School Students.

Another highlight was when Gavin’s group found an eastern bearded dragon hiding under a branch. The young students were surprising us all day with their ability to find things that eluded even us seasoned veterans of the reserve. We even found some kangaroo and rabbit scats - where upon finding a third pile of droppings one student proclaimed they were “sick of talking about poo” – which is fair enough, so our group moved on.

Another student found a brown bolete mushroom and couldn’t resist removing its cap with a stick.

Volunteers also explained some threats to the reserve such as the ever-encroaching (and horribly prickly) acacia paradoxa as well as invasive boneseed and how we are trying to manage it. Students also spotted some rubbish and big pile of illegally dumped concrete blocks which became an interesting conversation on the potential negative impacts people can have on nature.

From 9am to 11am we wandered through the bush – taking time to get down on our knees to inspect colourful flowers in the soil, all the while admiring the 100+ year old gum trees and scaring away skinks.

The goal of the day was to give students a first-hand experience of the nearby bushland reserve, giving them an opportunity to learn about local birds, insects, trees and flowers while helping them discover how special and valuable the reserve is. We really wanted them to feel like the reserve was theirs to enjoy. Based upon the feedback we heard from the students and teachers on the bus ride back to school, I feel confident that some of them returned with a newfound love for our Australian bush - and a better understanding of biology and geography.

Find the Key

I know there is a hidden door, I’ve been and seen it here before,

I search among the garden beds, I sneak around the chicken sheds,

The path it leads around the bend, and that is where I tend to wend,

But nothing, nowhere seems to lead, to where I want to go.

The key I hold is small and rusty, the cord on it, is lank and musty,

Having been in hidden ground, for many years till it was found,

I search and search but cannot find, a glimpse of what I had in mind,

It was a door of colour green, it was quite small, or so it seemed,

To me that day when you were here, when you left me broken hearted.

Standing in the shadows I close my eyes and still my mind,

To imagine in the past another time when all was well,

And life was happy and at last I notice by the path, a hollow in the growing grass,

On my knees I fall and crawl, and feel beside the roots.

And come across a wooden slat, that’s it! I cry and clear the space,

The verdant door emerges, I fit the key inside the lock, And turn it gently round, it opens slowly with a creak, And there I spy upon the ground, a skeleton that’s ne’er been found.

It wears a hat that you once wore, the coat of red still adorns his chest,

His boots are still upon his feet, though rotted like the rest,

He did deserve to die that day, leaving me alone to fend, The children we had grown, he did that day confess to sin,

He loved another so he said, and that is why I must explain,

It’s why he ended up dead.

22 Leigh News POLICE REPORT FOR NOVEMBER

Hello all,

I am coming across a few snakes out and about while patrolling, so be wary. With fire danger period approaching keep your grass cut and properties clear of debris and you have a better chance of seeing snakes and you will also be in a better position to prevent fire risk at your property. When the fire danger period is enacted remember no fires, don’t weld or use a grinder in long dry grass etc as you can be charged if a fire occurs. Please register/notify the CFA of any burn offs in the lead up to the danger period and save our volunteers in the CFA being called out unnecessarily to burnoff’s.

I am still getting plenty of reports of youths on trail bikes on the roads and in the common and on illegal electric bikes and scooters and petrol motor push bikes around the Inverleigh township. The best way for me to deal with them is when I have video footage of the behaviour sent to me or being posted on social media sites. If you take footage and want to post it on local social media sites it lets other people see the poor behaviour and also assists in identifying the youths whose parents I can then visit to educate about the rules/laws applicable to the vehicles.

There have been some recent com-

plaints in relation to noise from properties in Falkirk Road and Cleveland Drive with fireworks being filmed being set off from a property in the area which is not the first time this has occurred. There have been several reports of explosions, rowdy parties and excessive noise in general in the area for some time now. It has been reported that several dogs startled from the noise of the fireworks on Saturday night the 19/10 then fled from their properties leading to the owners and several neighbours spending hours driving around looking for the pets, one of which didn’t turn up till the following day. Please be considerate of your neighbours when having parties/celebrations. Fireworks are illegal in Victoria and charges relate to possessing explosives.

Christmas is fast approaching, please don’t buy your children electric scooters which they cannot use till they are 16 years old, please don’t get the petrol motor kits for push bikes or the after market electric kits which enable children to do 40, 50, 60 km/h and sometimes more and are actually designated motor bikes and illegal. Also consider letting the families of youths riding these petrol/electric bikes and electric scooters erratically and at speed around town know if you are unhappy with the behaviour as community pressure on the culprits and their parents we might finally see an end to the behaviour.

INVERLEIGH CFA NEWS

Cleaning Up

November is the month to prepare for the upcoming summer hot weather and higher fire risk that comes with it. I hope you are under way with your preparation and planning.

The current seasonal outlook is predicting a hot dry summer, possibly hotter than average. Last year we had a forecast like this and it was one of the coolest summers with a lot of rain that we had seen for a long time. The chances of this happening again would be unlikely and the recent dry conditions with the exception of the recent heavy rain falls would indicate that the weather pattern is still dry and possibly hot.

The heavy rains in the last few weeks have given grass a surge of growth and so mowers will be a lot busier than was first expected. Mowing is probably the easiest way to keep your property fire safe and reducing the length of grass is the best way of removing fire fuel.

Mowers themselves can cause issues if not maintained and each year we seem to get at least one call to a mower that has caught fire, last year we had one roll over as well. The best way to have a safe and successful mowing season is to make sure your mower is well maintained. If your not mechanically inclined then take it to a mower service shop and let them do it. If you do your own maintenance then changing the engine oil, cleaning the air cleaner and checking or replac-

ing the blades and belts will go a long way to a trouble free mowing experience. The biggest issue with mowers is a build up of grass clippings around the motor and the belts. Nearly all mower fires come from these areas so before you start mowing always check that these areas are free from any grass build up.

Mowers need to be driven carefully and they are not toys, so don’t let underage children operate them and supervise beginners with some basic training as they learn. Also wear proper clothing, shorts and thongs should not be worn while mowing. Hearing protection is also a good idea.

Some of the main tips while mowing are. Pick up any things that can damage the mower before you start , eg wire, rocks, or stones, hoses and the like. If the grass is longer, then go a bit slower, if the cut looks uneven or rough then your probably going to fast, be careful on slopes as they can tip over, be careful around trees as they can hit both mower and driver. Also be careful around other people as a mower can throw an object out of it and hit somebody or a window. Don’t operate mowers on really hot days.

So hopefully you all can have a trouble free mowing experience and get a lot done.

Leigh District Riding Club (AGM Sunsday 10th November 2024)

Leigh District Riding Club is inviting existing members to re-join and welcoming new members. Our home grounds are at the beautiful local Victoria Park.

Our rallies are usually on the second Sunday of the month. We are a small, inclusive club for adult and junior riders wanting to enjoy their horses, at whatever level they might be. Most rally attendees are not highly competitive riders, but riders who enjoy the calm of a smaller club. We do attempt to cater for all horse and rider abilities.

The AGM is being held on Sunday10th November 2024 around lunch time.

Joining LDRC costs $220.00 of which $170.00 is the HRCAV insurance fee which covers you 365 days of the year, provided you are engaging in a HRCAV type activity, wearing riding boots and helmet. (think riding at home, trail riding, having a lesson, but not rodeo). Juniors and non-riding members cost less. HRCAV membership also allows riders to

compete or attend other HRCAV events and shows. You can also be a member of more than one club, in which case you only pay the insurance once. HRCAV / membership fees are due from 1 November 2024 so joining now gives the best value for money.

LDRC has fantastic jumps and obstacles available for instructors to use. During 2024 we enjoyed several rallies with instructor Heather Bowers involving dressage, poles and jumping, depending on rider choice.

We attended an indoor arena during the Winter months, and held 2 obstacles days with Marg Anderson and one very popular training day with Barry Tomlin.

We also want to encourage the non members who use and enjoy the horse facilities at Victoria Park, to join and/or support the club that maintains them. Or simply to make a donation of time or money to LDRC towards the maintenance of the arenas you enjoy. Golden Plains does not own Victoria Park and does not fund or maintain it. Victoria Park is entirely financed and maintained by volunteers of either LDRC or the Victoria Park Committee.

Contact Sue Debets (suedebets@gmail.com) for membership forms and further information.

Message from Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan MP

In the last two years, the Federal Government have allowed the national road network to fall into disrepair with billions of dollars in funding cuts and delays.

From 1 January through to 2 October this year, 213 lives were lost on Victorian roads1. More than half of these fatalities occurred on rural roads despite metropolitan Melbourne accounting for approximately 75% of Victoria’s population2.

I have delivered well over $1 billion of federal funding to the Victorian State Government to maintain Wannon’s road and rail infrastructure yet it is hard to see where all this money has gone. Our communities deserve safer roads

and better rail connectivity and not the Suburban Rail Loop that we can’t afford.

I am committed to lifting federal government funding for our roads again and demanding they be built and repaired properly. In addition, I believe that one of the things we have to do is use local government more to fix our roads, whether they be roads of national significance such as the Princes Highway or state government artillery roads. Local government contractors have been shown to do a far superior job because the work is carried out by locals who have to drive on the roads themselves.

WINCHELSEA OP SHOP REBUILD APPEAL UPDATE

Hesse Rural Health have been working extra hard behind the scenes in planning and fundraising efforts to restore the beloved new permanent home for their Op Shop. With the proposed site of 44-46 Main St in Winchelsea having a heritage overlay and significant refurbishment design challenges, it’s taken some time to ensure everything is in order to return it to its former glory.

But after experiencing these planning delays and a lot of Hesse heart and soul, Hesse are delighted to advise that they have both an approved planning permit and the funds for Stage 1 of the Op Shop rebuild!

Stage 1 is now in final planning, with works to be completed in 2025. This will deliver a restored and refurbished building to the old bakery site to operate from initially whilst the Stage 2 (extension) is planned. As the building being restored in Stage 1 is smaller than the previous Op Shop that was lost to fire, an extension is required under Stage 2. The size of this extension to support the ongoing operations of this shop is dependent on the fundraising received.

Thanks to support received to date, Hesse are now more than halfway towards reaching their Stage 2 goal to extend the existing building

and bring this important Winchelsea community space fully back to its former operations - and that means back to fully serving the local community.

We couldn’t have made it this far without the tireless support of the Winchelsea community and surrounds, with a very special shout out to the members of the Hesse Rural Health Hospital Auxiliary. This community powerhouse has managed to raise $200,000 in total towards the Stage 2 goal of $400,000, and has set its sights on helping once again to bring this project home.

To keep the momentum going, Hesse is holding a Spring Raffle, with many amazing prizes to be won. All proceeds raised go to the Hesse Op Shop Rebuild Appeal, and you will be in with a chance to win one of the 13 prizes including garden supplies, power tools, accommodation, prestige golf club vouchers, plus other vouchers and wine prizes. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased from Hesse Reception, the temporary Op Shop location of 10 Willis St in Winchelsea, plus many other local locations, as well as being able to be purchased online by using the QR code provided below. The raffle will be drawn at 12pm on Sunday 10th November 2024, at the Winchelsea Community Market. Get in quick for your tickets (online ticket sales close on the 7th of November) and support this amazing cause!

Pre-Anesthetic Blood Test

What is a pre-anesthetic blood test?

When you bring your pet in to be admitted for surgery, whether it be a routine desexing or a more complex surgery, you will be asked if you would like your pet to have a pre-anesthetic blood test. While there is an extra cost to have this included we highly recommend you request it as there are many benefits for both young and old patients. Although we use the safest techniques, drugs and equipment available, any type of surgery and anaesthesia carries some risks. Having a pre-anesthetic blood test prior to surgery can reduce the risk of complications.

The anaesthetic protocol we use at our clinic aims to minimise these risks and to tailor an individual anaesthetic plan for each animal. All animals undergoing surgery will have a thorough physical examination and, if you chose, will have a pre-anaesthetic blood test performed to better assess the internal health of your pet. This is particularly important in dogs older than 7 years of age who have a higher risk of health problems. The test allows us to check the function of your pet’s major organs, such as the ability of the liver and kidney to rid the body of drugs and medications. We are also able to identify abnormalities in blood cells which may affect the bloods ability to carry oxygen, fight infection and prevent excessive bleeding during surgery.

For younger pets, the test gives a future reference for what their ‘normal’ is, and gives you peace of mind.

We highly recommened your pet having a pre-anesthetic blood test prior to surgery. Please call the clinic on 52811221 if you require any further infomation.

Snake Bites

Summer is fast approaching and this means its perfect weather for snakes.

Snakebite in dogs and cats is quite common. Prevention is always better than cure so keep grass and brush cut back around the house. Try to limit the amount of water lying around particularly when it gets to summer and it becomes hot and dry.

Maintain a close watch on your dog when exercising, especially if it is off the lead and free to

Greenies Dental Treats

Oral care is an important part of pet ownership. There are many ways to keep our pets teeth healthy including providing dental treats such as Greenies.

Greenie’s have been developed by a team of experts to help develop healthy treats that are purposely designed for dog and cat teeth. For over a decade they have been dedicated to creating treats with proven health benefits and a taste your pet will love.

Irresistibly tasty, incredibly powerful and specially formulated crunchy texture designed to reduce tartar build up.

Feed Greenie’s daily for your dog or cat to experience the amazing effect of clean teeth and fresh breath.

We stock Greenies in both the cat and dog range here at Bannockburn Vet Clinic.

Please call 5281 1221 or come into the reception if you would like to purchase or need more information.

sniff around. Sometimes their bark changes when they find a snake as they become excited.

If your dog is bitten seek veterinary attention immediately. A quick phone call to let us know you are on your way will ensure quick efficient treatment on your arrival. Absence of bite marks doesn’t always mean that your dog hasn’t been bitten – snake bite marks are very small and almost impossible to detect.

The onset of clinical signs varies in accordance with the bite site (an animal bitten on the nose or mouth will show signs much sooner that one bitten on the leg), the severity of the bite (thick coats are naturally more difficult for the fangs of a snake to penetrate) and the amount of times the animal was bitten – the venom sacs of a snake work the same way as the salivary glands and refill quickly after each bite.

Some of the signs to look for are shaking, shivering, excess salivation (drooling), vomiting, pale gums, weak rapid pulse and collapse. Time is of the utmost importance when treating snakebite.

Don’t wait for symptoms to appear, act quickly and seek veterinary help immediately.

Guniea Pigs at Bannockburn Vet Clinic

This little Guinea Pig visited us recently for a procedure to have a nasty abscess cleaned and flushed. He required an anaesthetic to carry this out.

Final year vet student Genevieve helped with the procedure and was very happy when he awoke without issue and was quickly munching on some parsley.

We see all types of animals big and small. If you would like to book a consultation for your pet please call reception on 5281 1221 to arrange an appointment.

Start to the Term at Shelford Primary School

Term Four has kicked off with a flurry of activity at Shelford Primary School. Some of our senior students recently spent nine days at Somers Camp, where they focused on developing personal and social skills, enhancing their understanding of sustainable practices, and building resilience to better navigate challenges and changes.

Meanwhile, our junior students enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Bannockburn Library. There, they engaged with emergency services, participated in various active sports, sampled a range of foods and smoothies, and created arts and crafts. Each student returned home with a goodie bag filled with surprises.

As we embrace the beautiful sunshine, we are grateful for the wonderful environment in which we learn, work, and grow at Shelford Primary School.

BANNOCKBURN SURGERY IS CELEBRATING 40 YEARS.

Dr Cameron Profitt

Dr John Henderson

Dr Benjamin Fry

Dr Rupali Jain

Dr Veronica Donahoe

Dr Edward Carson

Dr Rimas Liubinas

A humble beginning for Bannockburn Surgery when it first opened its doors in 1983 – small rooms located between what was the original supermarket and pharmacy.

Soon outgrowing these rooms, they moved in 1986 to 19 High Street with two consulting rooms, a small treatment room and tiny tearoom for its team members. Its current building (16 High Street) was opened in the year 2000 – a purpose-built practice complete with five consulting rooms and a sixth added in 2010.

The practice has grown from strength to strength and has a wonderfully dedicated team of Doctors, Nurses, Reception team and Practice Manager. They also have access to high-quality Allied Health services including podiatry and newly introduced acupuncture with Dr Rimas Liubinas, with plans for more services to follow.

For Bannockburn Surgery who celebrated their forty-year anniversary a few weeks ago, this was a proud milestone. The surgery welcomed back former team members: doctors, nurses, administration staff, and allied health for an evening of festivities reminiscing on the past forty-years and what the future holds for the practice.

The Directors (and Principal GPs) of Bannockburn Surgery would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to those whom have been part of their practice team, past and present. And also extends a warm thank you to patients for ongoing support in entrusting their health to the team at Bannockburn Surgery and their journey.

The surgery has a proud history and is incredibly excited for the future. Not only the future of Bannockburn Surgery, but also in continuing to support the growing community of Bannockburn and its surrounds. The surgery has grand plans and is eagerly awaiting to commence build

It is pleased to announce that another GP Registrar will be joining the team from August, Dr Ernest Cheng, which will extend the provision of service even further. Bannockburn Surgery doctors will be continuing to bulk-bill patients with healthcare cards and pension cards, as well as those under 16 years old.

TGS has officially withdrawn its seismic testing proposal for the Otway Basin.

This decision is testament to the amazing groundswell of community advocacy across our region. Congratulations to all community members who raised their voices and attended the Paddle Out in Torquay, the march through Ocean Grove, and the many events that occurred along our coastline.

You came to me raising concerns about the proponent’s consultation, I acted on your concerns and NOPSEMA did listen.

This is democracy in action. This is coastal communities working together to protect our marine environment.
