Autumn has arrived.
With the colder weather arriving and some recent rain the fire restriction period was removed in mid April. This now allows you to burn rubbish and have campfires with out any permits or penalties.
It does not however remove the need for common sense when having a fire, this time of the year can be quite busy for the fire brigade because of escaped burns, unattended, or out of control fires and threatening other assets fires . Nearly all these sort of call outs are because somebody has been careless or not managed the burn properly. Managing a burn is not that hard and at the moment when everything is green the chance of a fire escaping is remote. Never the less, it is wise to monitor the burn to make sure it does what it should be doing.
Simply having a hose nearby or a shovel is usually all it takes and regular checking of it to make sure it is burning properly and maybe push it up a bit so everything burns completely is all that is required. If it is a big burn, then registering it with Fire Victoria is a good idea.
Inverleigh fire brigade is about to commence a Junior programme where we are encouraging children aged between 11 and under 16 with an interest in Fire brigade activities to come along and participate and learn about the fire brigade and gain skills that will help them become better community members.
The activities will be conducted by trained competent members with working with children accreditation and will cover things like,
•Participate in basic training skills of fire fighting equipment.
•Learn about what the equipment on the trucks is used for.
•Learn about fire safety around the home.
•Learn about what the brigade does, eg fires, first aid.
•Basic fun activities and games with a fire brigade theme.
•Help with certain brigade events.

•And many other interesting and challenging activities.
They will not be allowed to attend fire call outs or participate in any dangerous activities. If you have any children who might be interested in being part of this new programme then we are conducting a sausage sizzle and information night on, Monday 22 May at 5.30 pm at the Fire Station.
