meet in the Inverleigh Public Hall on the 3rd Wednesday of each month @7 :30pm (Except January)
VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME President: Hilary Hamilton Secretary: James Manche Treasurer: Tony Waayers Leigh News Editor: Peter Trevaskis
The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need vol unteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.
Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include:
The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting.
Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.
The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.
Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.
Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.
meet in the Inverleigh Public Hall 0n the 4th Wednesday of each Month @ 2pm (Except December & January)

Peter’s Editorial
I have included a special pictorial report of the recent Flood Event that happens in our area. I trust you all enjoy (perhaps not the correct word), value the report and continue to support each other over the coming weeks and months. Thanks to all those who sent photos to me for this. They will be forwarded to the local Historical Society for safe keeping, to be looked back on in the years to come by future generations.
I was personally touched by the report of the recently renovated cottage in Shelford and the inundation to that property. The service organisations were unable to help in this case and so the home owners, I'm sure, are so extremely grateful to me many local resident who came and did their very best to try save this situation as best they could.
Also, thanks to those who contacted Local/State and Federal Governments and lobbied for correction of the "exclusion" of Golden Plains Shire residents from receiving financial and other support because their LGA was not included in the initial issue of support. Very well done and there will be others, as well as the home owner mentioned above, who are very gratefully for what you have done.
Until next month, stay safe and keep supporting those around you. You never know what they may need.

The Inverleigh Cricket Club will reach an important mile stone in their history this month, with the celebration of 150 years of existence. Local historian Alan Hart has been hunting down all matters of interest around this community and his research found a Geelong Advertiser extract from December the 11th 1872 which read,
A cricket club has recently been formed at Inverleigh, the members of which are to turn out for practice for the first time tomorrow. The President of the shire, Mr J. Boyce, has taken an active part in the formation of the club, which is soon expected to be strong enough to challenge other districts.
There were no further reports of activity found until Feb ruary and March of 1874, where matches against Mt Moriac, at Mr Hope’s estate and Murgheboluc were published. By 1904 there were detailed match reports of games against a combined Geelong team that visited Inverleigh and defeated the locals in a close game, fol lowed by a comprehensive thrashing of Teesdale at Inverleigh, with locals C. Pithouse, D. Costain and a gentleman known simply as Hayman performing admirably. Inverleigh also visited Winchelsea for a match on March 15th 1904 and pulled off an exciting 3 run victory, with C. Pithouse taking 8-29 and Hayman top scoring with 45.
In 1921 Inverleigh became foundation members of the Leigh Cricket Association with Bannockburn, Shelford and Tees dale and apart from the war years, they remained active in the Association till the merger with the Southern District in 1999. They were a strong team from the outset, being runner up to Bannock burn in the initial season and then winning six consecutive pre mierships. The 1923/24 premiership photo contained the names of Eric Peel and Ian Smyth and their offspring have provided some of the greats of the club.
The late 1940’s heralded some more local connection, with youngsters Jack Peel, grandfather of current player David, Graeme Smyth and the Wishart brothers Doug and Rob starting their long and distinguished careers. Our historian, Alan Hart’s father and uncles were also part of the team by then. Former Geelong footbal ler John Haygarth was part of the 1948/49 premiership team and Graeme Smyth’s son Dale also went on the play for the Cats.
The early 1950’s saw the arrival of Stuart and Alan Peel as regular members of the Inverleigh team. Like Smyth and the Wishart brothers, the Peels were stalwarts of the club for many years and pro duced some amazing performanc es. Alan in particular would have to be regarded as one the greatest crickets in the region’s history. He commenced his career in 1950 and played through till 1967, before a six year stint at Murgheboluc. Alan returned to Inverleigh in 1970 and played four more seasons till his first retirement from the game. In total his known career at Inverleigh produced 6174 runs at 42.58 with 12
centuries in his 174 matches and an astonishing 705 wickets at a miserly average of 7.22 runs per wicket. He managed to collect 5 or more wickets in an innings on 59 occasions and completed a 10 wicket match haul 7 times. In October of 1959 he produced an amazing performance of 5 wick ets in consecutive deliveries against Elaine and tormented them again in the return match of the same season with a match haul of 11-24, including 4 wickets in consecutive balls. His 70 game stint at Murgheboluc returned another 2976 runs with 7 centuries and 220 wickets. He played in 9 premier ship teams at Inverleigh and another as captain at Murgheboluc. His brother Stuart encouraged him out of retirement in 1982 and he spent two seasons at Teesdale making a further 506 runs, including his 20th career century and collected 24 wickets.
The club will celebrate the historic event with a dinner at the Inverleigh Reserve on Novem ber the 26th and all former members are encour aged to attend.

Remembrance Day
Eleventh hourof the eleventh dayof the eleventh month. Remembrance Day is a day when we acknowl edge those who died while serving in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Remembrance Day is held on 11 November each year. This is the anniversa ry of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I. People in Australia, and most Com monwealth nations, observe one minute of silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month because that's when the Armistice came into effect. It is a time to honour the service personnel who died in service of Australia.
Originally called Armistice Day and now com monly called Poppy Day. The poppy has become a symbol of the day, largely due to the poem, 'In Flan ders Fields', by Canadian soldier, John McCrae. These flowers began to bloom in Flanders even after all the destruction and the vibrant red plant became a sym bol of hope. Here in Victoria it is possible to have the red Flanders poppy blooming in November, and knit ted and crochet poppies are long lasting memorials.
In USA it is called Veterans Day. It is a national holiday in France & Belgium and France uses a blue cornflower rather than a poppy. In the Netherlands the remembrance is on 4th May and in Russia, 1st August.
Of course in Australia and New Zealand it is ANZAC Day on 25th April that has special significance to our nations.
There are several other special days rec ognised by past and present members of the Defence force since WW2.

Golden Pens Write side up
G’Day from the penners for November. As pre dicted earlier in the year, can you believe that it’s No vember already? I always think of Dorethea McKellar’s My Country with the second stanza beginning: I love a sunburnt country/A land of sweeping plains/Of ragged mountain ranges/Of droughts and flooding rains. She is a poet well worth reading if you get a chance. Her love of our country shines through.
We at the group have been busy with challenging sub jects to write about for our homework with some great stories and poems being read and plenty of laughs had. We are always up for anyone to come and see what and who we are and if you would like to be part of a very friendly egalitarian group then do come and see us, we would be very happy to see you.
This month’s poem comes from Karen who writes about one of the greatest days in Victoria, (according to some anyway), the great AFL Grand Final. We hope you like her version of the day and please don’t be shy and jump on the email and send us a comment.
goldenpens4@gmail.com
So, cheerio from the penners. Grand Final
The crown roars as they run down the race
The banner flaps in the sun
The players hover as they gather around Then take off as one on the run
The standard bearers hold their ground
As the players fight through the tape
The message is clear and the crowd gives a cheer Hoping this will be the one…
Centre square and centre stage
A proud moment for a very few The coin is tossed and the captain calls An arm indicates which end Then off they run to take their place
And the umpire bounces the ball The tall men and women fly on high This game for one and all…
The lounge room warriors wrestle for their place
The losers sitting with little grace Fuel gathering has been done, The oven heating, timing is everything For the half time scrum to come All dressed in our colours, some with faces painted We are one with others, one side, one family Winners or losers this is the day…

POLICE REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 2022
Hello all,
I am writing this just having gone through the flood on the 14th October and awaiting an other rain event forecast for this weekend but hopefully it will not be as significant as the last one.
It was good to see the Inverleigh commu nity rally to help residences and businesses that could have been at risk of flooding with sand bagging both at the bowling club filling bags and placing them at various addresses. I also saw a few notices on social media with people offering their land for animals that may have had to be moved.
My shift that day was long and varied greatly in the tasks I was allocated. I was called to several instances of vehicles including trucks driving through rivers and flooded areas and getting stuck and requiring rescue in Lethbridge, Inverleigh and Shelford.
I was called to the River Road camping area as the SES were trying to assist a camper there move his vehicle and evacuate the camping area. Both the SES and I had patrolled through the camping areas in the days leading up and had encouraged the campers to move from the loca tion but not all the campers had evacuated.
I attended a two vehicle collision with injuries on Clyde Road Bannockburn. As a result of the collision a driver was conveyed to hospi tal and both vehicles required towing due to the damage.
I was sent to several addresses to check on the residents in the low lying areas and found they were okay and at this time it appeared the Leigh river was receding slightly, luckily.
I got calls from residents who had seen a child swimming across the Leigh River near the
Federation bridge and arrived to find the SES talking to the girl who luckily made it across.
I also received calls to children on in flatables and boggie boards in the Native Hut Creek in Teesdale but by the time I arrived they had left thankfully unharmed. It was a long shift, I worked around 12 hours and was still on edge for the next day or do with the Barwon River rising as well.
I would like to thank Helen and Tony Den HARTOG for passing on their knowl edge of the previous flooding events to me during the days leading up and on the day of the flood. I saw some great aerial shots on the Leigh News facebook page which really showed where the waters were travelling and had reached.
Having seen what has occurred in towns in the northern part of the state we can see what can happen with floods and the damage they can do to property, roads and stock and other animals.
Please don’t drive through floodwaters no matter what vehicle you have. A lot of SES and Police time and resources, includ ing the airwing, has been tied up trying to rescue people who have done this even ig noring signs and thought they were okay to but found out too late they were not. Don’t swim, kayak or use other floatation devices in raging floodwaters either as that is also ex tremely dangerous because you never know where whirlpools etc. are and there is also a lot of debris going down the river that can injure you.
Keep safe Chris

Spring and Summer birds at Inverleigh
By Glen White
Spring and summer is a busy time for birds at the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve. Whitewinged Choughs are building mud nests, Spotted Pardalotes are excavating tunnels into sandy banks to make cosy nests and Galahs, Kookaburras and Rosellas are competing for the best tree hollows in which to rear their young.
By late Spring many of the smaller birds have already bred, and some like the Superb Fairy Wren, may, if the conditions are right, breed again while the living is good.
The Reserve also welcomes back the most me lodic of birds, the Rufous Whistler. Sacred Kingfishers are sometimes seen and heard.
Other arrivals are the cuckoos, who come to parasitise the nests of other birds who are breeding. Of the dozen or so cuckoos in Australia, three are reg ular summer visitors to Inverleigh. One, the Shining Bronze-Cuckoo, only slightly larger than a sparrow parasitises the nests of fairy wrens and thornbills. Its plaintive call, a bit like someone whistling a dog is a common sound around the Reserve and in gardens.
The Friends group will lead a Free Bird Walk on Sunday December 11, from 10:30am - 12noon.
Come join us for some tips on how to identify birds both by sight and their call & bring binoculars if you have them. Walk starts at Common Rd entrance (near Golf Club entrance)
Please register with Keith on 0429 651 298 or windle.keith@gmail.com so we can let you know of any changes.

have been several factors that
a major flood event, firstly the
banks
were con structed many years ago in some of the lower areas such as behind the tennis courts helped keep the water out. The Barwon River did not have a high flow when the Leigh did, and so a lot of the water from the Leigh could move down stream and not get banked up by a high Barwon River. This flood has been the highest for some time though, and while not many buildings were effect ed there has been a lot of damage to fencing and debris to be removed.
With floods the SES are usually the primary agency and the CFA will support them in dealing with incidents caused by the floods. Unfortunately we are still seeing some really stupid things being done in flood water with swimmers and drivers needing the assistance of the SES when they should have entered the water at all.
We would like to thank all the people who filled sand bags and
So with all this rain, it will dry out eventually and this will mean a lot of grass growth and the need to keep it short and tidy along with pre summer clean ups. So please try and prepare your property as the fire risks this summer could be high when it does dry out and it gets hotter.
Finally we are investigating the possibility of setting up a junior brigade to encourage young peo ple (11 – 15) to come and participate in some brigade based activities, learn new skills such as first aid, leadership and community service. Hurdles in Asking for Help
Recently a colleague in ministry was expressing disap pointment that one of their leading members of the congregation had fallen and broken her arm and all attempts to help and pro vide pastoral and spiritual care have been rejected. My colleague doesn’t even know where the congregation member is in respite. It is amazing that some people find it difficult to ask and receive help when needed for various reasons. The recent floods have shown how willing people are to help one another in community, but we can sometimes find it difficult to ask for physical assis tance during recovery from illness or injury; emotional support when feeling overwhelmed with life and grief; even in relation ships asking our partners for help.
Hurdle 1: We feel like we have failed
Sometimes we have started too many activities for us to handle, or we are balancing too many obligations, when life has thrown a mental or emotional curve ball resulting in a sense of failure. When this idea of failure hits, it knocks our pride and confidence and leads to embarrassment making it more difficult to ask for help.
Reframe: We need to allow ourselves to be vulnerable. It takes courage to let our guard down, but the upside is it builds deeper relationships and improves connection with our partner, friends, or neighbours.
Hurdle 2: We are afraid to give up control
I find that if I want something done, I want to do it my self so it will be done the way I want it; especially if we live alone and are used to doing everything our self. This control can go against asking for help, even when there is too much to do and we can’t do it all our self.
Reframe: Letting someone else take control takes a leap of faith, but doing so has great rewards. It cultivates an invaluable sense of trust. As we trust someone else with a task, they feel more inclined to trust us when they ask for help.
Hurdle 3: We are fiercely independent
As I have said, if we have been someone who has had to do everything on our own, we are not used to relying on others to help us. We develop a strong value of self-sufficiency and autonomy. If there is a way to do it our self, we are determined to find it. Asking for help with this mindset might make us feel dependent, weak, inadequate, or constrained.
Reframe: It may be helpful to find someone, or our partner, to give us advice about the task, or support us rather than surrendering the task to another. There are times when it is great to be independent, but it is great to have a team member to back us up.
Asking for help isn’t easy for everyone when facing physical, emotional, and mental hurdles. Learning to reframe those hurdles strengthens our relationships with our partners, our friends, our colleagues and others in our communities. We can enjoy the positives of asking for help instead of struggling alone when we do not have to. Based on https://www.prepare-enrich.com/blog/3-hurdlesto-asking-for-help-how-to-reframe-them Prepare/Enrich is a low-cost programme we offer to explore relationship strengths and growth areas in times of transition: preparing for a wedding, an addition to the family, change in career, approaching retirement, or just to strengthen your relationship. We wanted to send a big thank you to the various people who rallied to help us during the recent flooding event.
Being one of the lower houses in the street and having had water through the house in the past, we decided to take advantage of the time we had available to sand bag our home. When the back fence gave away through the water pressure (and a rotted fence post) and water flowed into the back of our property the work of local volunteers to move the sand bag line to higher ground was truly appreciated.
Also grateful thanks the fire brigade member who gave up nearly four hours of his time on the Sat urday to pump out rather a lot of water left in our yard and unable to drain away.
Thank you all: Tim, Bronwyn and Lee Price.

Teesdale Community Plan Survey
Community Planning is a process where community members come together and take action to improve their community. Community members develop a community plan that outlines projects they will undertake to make their town a better place to live.
Golden Plains Shire Council supports Community Planning by providing a profession al facilitator who assists communities, as well as seed funding to help initiate the projects in the community plan.
To develop the Community Plan, ideas were solicited via an on-line and printed survey sent to Teesdale residents and through Face book, the local newsletter (Leigh News) and made avail able at the Teesdale post office. Emails were also sent to contacts from groups/associations within the community. The survey was available from 24/6/22 until 1/8/22. 65 responses were received with 131 different ideas.
The public meeting was promoted within the survey and on posters displayed around town. It was held on 11/8/22. 12 people attended. The ideas from the survey were discussed and further ideas added, before being voted on to establish a priority.
Community Coordinators are members of the community that volunteer their time to coor dinate the development and implementation of the community plan. The following people have volunteered to be Community Coordinators for this Community Plan.

Fun Animal Facts
Octopuses have a mini brain in each of their eight arms. Which gives each arm the ability to function independently
Elephants have the largest brain of all land mammals. This means elephants can remember all the members of their clan and can recall favourite places for many years.
Goldfish do not have 3 second memories . They can actually remember things that happended up to 3 months ago. Kangaroos can not hop or walk backwards due to their long feet and large tail
Obstructed Orlando
Lovely Orlando presented to us recently after his owners noticed he had dropped weight and he had not eaten for the last 3-4 days. He was last seen eating part of a dead kangaroo that had been found in a paddock - Orlando is a working dog, living with and protecting his flock.
Orlando
Cat Breeding Season
Breeding season typically begins around September.
As the days become longer and the temperatures rise, our cats hormones start to change in preparation for mating.
On arrival at the clinic Orlando appeared a little sad, it was an effort for him to get up and he was slow to get walking. He looked VERY uncomfortable.
Dr. Kylie checked Orlando over, his gum colour and gum refill time were normal, his heart rate was a little high - fitting with his signs of discomfort. While his abdomen was being felt, he showed more signs of discomfort and Dr. Kylie could feel a big hard mass in his belly.
With fears of a massive space occupying tumour being the underlying cause of Orlando's discomfort and weight loss, a radiograph was taken of his abdomen to see what was going on. What was seen was quite shocking and certainly made us all feel uncomfortable. We could definitely understand why he felt so crappy.
Orlando had SEVERE constipation. When he was palpated rectally the faeces felt like a brick and certainly were not going to be able to be pushed out, despite Orlando's best efforts.
Not only would an amount of poo like this be very uncomfortable, but the longer it stayed in his gastro intestinal tract the more chance his intestines and colon had of stretching beyond the point of returning to a normal size. This can lead to a condition known as megacolon. As long as the faeces stayed in the intestine, the intestine would continue to absorb water from the column of poo, making it even more unlikely he would be able to pass it. Further toxins, that should be expelled from his body through the faeces, would enter Orlando's blood stream, making him feel very unwell.
So Orlando was admitted into hospital for intravenous fluid therapy to help support his circulatory system and to hydrate the column of faeces helping it move along. We also planned to perform a rectal enema using warm water and massage of his abdomen. This helps to break up the poo and expel it. It was also discussed that it may take multiple attempts at this procedure to fully evacuate his gastrointestinal tract and if that failed, we may have to go in surgically and

Oestrus cycles begin when a cat reaches puberty which can be as early as four months of age.
Female cats will generally continue to come into season until they are mated or become pregnant.
Signs of oestrus can include:
Increased vocalisation - this is often described as a yowl.
Change in mannerisms
Urine spraying
Increase in affection - towards people and cats
Increased attention to the genital region
Reduced appetite
It's of high importance to have your cat desexed to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
Research has proven that desexed animals live longer, are less likely to get certain illnesses such as uterine infections or mammary tumours and experience a reduction in behavioural problems like roaming, urine marking and aggression.
Desexing is a day stay procedure
If you require more information
in for desexing contact the clinic we are happy to help.
I'm very grateful and excited to have joined the team here at Bannockburn looking forward to meeting you all and your furry friends. Alana.
evacuate the faeces via an enterotomy (incision into his intestines and bowel)
After Orlando was stabilized on fluids and pain relief administered, he was given an anaesthetic and an enema was performed. After a long time with the warm water enema, lubrication, manual massaging and removal of LOTS of faeces it felt like progress had been made. A follow up x-ray was taken to see, we were disheartened to see we had only made a small dent in evacuating all the poo.
As Orlando had been under anaesthetic long enough he was settled back into a bed to let the intravenous fluids, pain relief and time do their job. It was hoped he would be able to move the poo in the natural way. We could tell he was feeling better already as he was quite happy to eat dinner that night after the anaesthetic had worn off.
The next morning Orlando was taken for lots of walks and despite trying he was unable to pass any faeces. It was decided that performing surgery and removing all the faeces was going to be the best option to get Orlando up and running again.
The procedure doesn't come without risks:
Infection due to the nature of surgery performed (cutting open bowel to retrieve faeces)
Risk that a stricture in the intestine (narrowing) forms at the surgery site causing issues with passage of faeces in the future.
Risk of dehiscence (breakdown) of any of the surgery sites leading to peritonitis (infection of the abdomen). Along with the already present risk of severe stretching of the colon leading to mega colon which would lead to Orlando being unable to defecate properly.
Despite all these risks Orlando went into surgery. In total two incisions had to be made into his colon to evacuate 2 kilograms of hard, dry poo!!
A post-op x-ray was taken to confirm that the majority of the faeces had been removed. Now the wait began to see if he would be able to pass his own stools again without issue. To increase success for this, Orlando was fed small liquidy meals regularly so as not to stretch or fill his colon.
We regularly checked in with Orlando and at his stitches out appointment we were happy to see that he had gained 4 kilos and was passing normal faeces by himself. He certainly was a much happier man!
