The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road. Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections. We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Peter’s Editorial
Hello Everyone and welcome to Spring. For me, this has been a very cold winter and for my son Geoff, just returned from Singapore, it has been a very cold, chilly, freezing winter. But he will acclimatize, eventually. A regular feature of this publication has been the Directory, (on page 42) and a lady contacted me this month to update her clubs contact details, and also to request I add them to our website, inverleigh.org.au. So, following on from that could all of you who are involved in local clubs and organisations please check out the directory and send me an email, if updating of details is required. Also, a copy of your Club Logo wqould be good too. I have had to adjust the layout of this edition to assist the printer in doing this months publication, so all the colour pages are together. I trust you can find all your usual articles OK. Enjoy this months local news.
VALE BETTY WISHART 6/5/1927-21/7/2021 Recently Inverleigh lost one of its older residents in Betty Wishart (nee Longmore), widow of Rob, who passed away in April 2016. Betty grew up on the original Longmore property on Longmore Rd (now Russell’s Rd) on the side and flats of the Moorabool Valley, a working orchard and dairy farm. On marrying Rob in 1954, she moved to the newly built weatherboard house on Wishart Rd, beginning her long association with the Inverleigh community. Betty & Rob worshipped at the Inverleigh Presbyterian Church, and were involved in numerous roles within the church. Both joined the Inverleigh Hall Committee and found themselves fundraising to construct the current building, which opened in 1959. Theirs was a long and dedicated service to the Hall, being on the committee in various roles for nearly 50 years. Betty and Rob ran the local Inverleigh monthly dance for over 35 years- Rob was M.C. and Betty took charge of the catering. Betty was renowned for her cinnamon sponges at the supper. She also took charge of providing afternoon tea for whichever cricket team Rob was playing for, up until 1987 when he retired at age 60. Again, when the new Sporting Complex was being discussed, the fundraising started all over again. Next was the formation and development of the Inverleigh Bowls Club, which occupied Saturday mornings for years with working bees. Finally Betty and Rob got to play on the green, with some success for Betty in 2003-2005, becoming ladies club champion twice. Betty loved belonging to the Inverleigh Senior Citizens group for many years during her 60-70’s. The bus trips to various destinations were her highlight, with wonderful memories and friendships formed.
Vale Marinus ‘Rene’ Van Dalen.
Rene was a tireless servant of the Inverleigh Football and Netball Club and indeed the entire community. He Served in an official capacity as Secretary for many years and unofficially in just about every other role possible. If a job needed doing Rene was the man. He spent the last Two years as Senior timekeeper and was Team manager and live scorer for many more. Rene could always be relied on to help whenever the club was in need. Fund raising, Appling for grants or representing the clubs interests in various forums were just some of tasks we are so thankful for. His greatest wish was to see his beloved Hawks win a Premiership. That he lost his battle before it happened is such a shame. Hopefully we can rectify sooner rather than later.
Leigh News 8
Recently Betty spoke to the Inverleigh C.W.A. ladies, sharing her reflections of yesteryear, when she transferred her C.W.A. membership from Bannockburn to Inverleigh back in 1954. She was an excellent cook and floral arranger, often providing flowers for local weddings and occasions. Betty learned singing as a young woman her soprano voice often entertained when she was guest artist at local activities, including a number of Back to Inverleigh celebrations. Farewell Betty- a stalwart of the Inverleigh and district community.

G'day from the penners on this lovely sunny day, (Sunday 22/08/2021) a little taste of what is around the corner weather wise. I'm sure many of you will be glad to see some sunshine and feel a little warmth to thaw your chilled bones. It's a pity we can't go out and about to visit friends and family, have a picnic on the beach or take a walk through our beautiful bush land. Everything has closed up again, which means the penners won't be able to meet at the library for now, but it won't stop our creativity. We get inspiration from the many and varied places we see and experience, including covid. For those of you who have seen the council's project titled 'Zoom Me a River' you will understand what we mean. This month we thought it would be good to revisit some of the work that was created for that project. This piece was written by Gordon last October. Zoom – the river that connects Zoom me a river – a river of people. Let the flow take you. Submerge your mind into a stream of thought and ideas. Do not struggle against the current – open your mind and your heart, for we are all different. Embrace the divergence’s you find in the Zoom river. Strike for the bottom and once there, delight in the ideas and innovations that swim past like so many glittering fish. There are rocks in the Zoom river, minds that are hardened against the notions that tumble and swirl past, but the people keep coming, dashing themselves relentlessly against the granite like exterior, until eventually even they begin to crumble away. The river flows on, growing broader and deeper as more and more minds plunge in to join the flux. As water is life, then so is the power of words and ideas. The Zoom river shows the way.
Thanks to: Ross & Caroline Wilson of Shelford and Mora Leach of Inverleigh for faithfully supplying the monthly rainfall figures. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
It's a great piece Gordon, and it's still so relevant almost a year after it was written. The penners can be contacted by email at goldenpens4@gmail.com if you would like to make a comment or perhaps even join us. We are very friendly and always welcome newcomers.
LeighNews10 'Big Ideas for a Small Extension'
The bluestone building in the photo for September in the 2021 Inverleigh Historical Society calendar is the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute building, in High St, part of the Inverleigh Public Hall complex today. In 1865, nine years after Inverleigh had been proclaimed a town, a Committee of Management was elected for the formation of a Mechanics Institute to provide a public venue for general and technical education, meetings, and social activities. The original bluestone building was much smaller than the one we have today, with a reading room containing a lending library attached to the western end. By the 1880s, a small extension, a stage with curtains and a piano had added to the amenities and uses of the hall. At the meeting of the 21st of September, 1900, the committee decided to ‘make enquiries as to the cost of adding 12 feet to the end of the hall’. A public meeting was called to discuss the project. Building funds were raised through donations, local subscriptions, requests to parliamentary representatives, a New Year’s Eve ball and a bazaar. Two committee members were ‘empowered’ to go to Melbourne to purchase £25 worth of goods at their ‘discretion’, for sale at the bazaar – a good investment since the three-day event raised £127 9s 9d. By January 1902, with the credit balance of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute Committee of Management at £135 18s 2d, it was decided to extend the hall by 15ft. Mr Laird, of Messrs Laird & Barlowe, was appointed as architect. Builders Messrs Murphy, Keown and Digiv, with the lowest of six tenders - £134 pounds
for the main hall and £51 pounds for the porch - were appointed as builders. The extra money required for the building and furnishings was obtained in an overdraft from the National Bank in Geelong. A concert and ball were planned for May 23rd, 1902, to open the additions. The writing beside the ceiling vent in the photo says:
Fred G Paape Carpenters Will J Phillips April 10, 1902
The dated names, apparently in the same hand, show that the men worked on the Mechanics Institute extension in 1902. Fred G Paape was 19 at the time and lived in Geelong. I have found two possibilities for the identity of Will J Phillips, carpenter, both of whom lived in Geelong. We do not know if the ceiling vents were a feature of the building prior to 1902 because the earliest dated photo of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute in the Inverleigh Historical Society’s collection is from 1909. The minute book makes no mention of the vents. Ceiling vents were a feature of Federation buildings. Hall hirings increased to a record 20 occasions between late May and December following the extension opening, raising £15 12s. The 1902 Annual report showed a deficit of £49 19s 1d, which the committee hoped to liquidate over the coming year. Details for this article were found in the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute minute book. Christine Windle

Article from Rev. Dr. Timothy Smith Anglican Church Inverleigh, Bannockburn & Meredith.
Covid-19 and Community Renewal Covid-19 has been an experience none of us ever imagined. It is an experience that has caused most of us to re-evaluate our life and community. In Christianity we talk about the need for repentance. It is unfortunate, I think, that we only associate repentance with sin. Sin is not only about breaking rules or commandments. Sins are all those things we think, say, or do, or do not think, say, or do, which damages relationships, or potential relationships, with God, with others, and self. The bible understands repentance more broadly than sin. In Mark’s gospel Jesus introduces his message, saying, “The kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe the good news.” Jesus’ message of God’s kingdom is for a new and better world. His call to repentance is an invitation change from what is to what can be and we need to trust (believe) in how the world he teaches it could be. This word from the biblical Greek we translate as repent is metanoia. Literally it means, meta, to change, and noia, nerve; to change our mind. In Greek thought, unlike our romantic movies of following our heart, the mind and the heart are inseparable; repentance is to change your heart and your mind. However, to change your heart and mind requires openness to the possibility that there may be another way of thinking, speaking, and doing. Repentance, therefore, implies openness to new possibilities.
Social researcher, Mark McCrindle, reports that because of Covid-19 41% of Aussies are thinking about God more, 25% are reading their bible more, and 53% are thinking about their own mortality. 28% of those who have engaged in spiritual pursuits would like to continue to do so when this crisis ends. It may be the greatest impact Covid-19 is having on us is re-evaluating our community life. 55% are thinking about the meaning of life and 70% of Aussies have no desire to go back to the way things were in their gatherings. Covid-19 is causing us to change our way of thinking, what and how we talk, and what we do as a part of community. Our experience of Covid-19 has the potential for us to see a renewal of community. Whether community is expressed as marriage, de-facto, family, church, community organisation, sporting club, workplace, village, town, city, nation, even global, there is potential for us to move toward the world as Jesus imagined it, and referred to as the kingdom of God. Covid-19 is an invitation for us to change our heart and mind and implement other options to deepen community life. POLICE REPORT FOR AUGUST 2021
Hello all, We have recently been seeing some thefts occurring from rural properties where farms are being entered. usually by a gate chain/lock being cut, and we have seen some farm vehicles being stolen and sheds entered with tools also being taken. Please be vigilant as to strange persons/vehicles loitering around your properties, any suspicious behaviour please call 000 and we can come and check them out. Try to leave vehicles locked and definitely do not leave keys in vehicles. I recently attended another collision involving the intersection of Winchelsea Road and the Hamilton Highway where a vehicle drove through the intersection without stopping and narrowly missed a vehicle travelling along the Highway. A medical episode was the cause of this incident but I have written to both the council and Vic Roads to have a review of the intersection including the signage and shrubbery as this has been raised by residents before. I have had some youth issues raised with me this month including youths again getting into the railway building after panelling has been removed by them. The youths were also seen climbing over the railway cars that were sided there. There is a large amount of sports drink bottles also being left littered on the ground around the building as well. I am patrolling the area and contacted the Rail authority who have boarded up the building again. There is a publicised rail journey going to start from Inverleigh in future and I don’t think the current state of the area around the station building is how the town wants to be seen/remembered. The youths involved are showing a complete lack of respect for the environment and their town in general. Youths have been getting on the shade sails above the playground on the Inverleigh primary school and have been making holes in same including a large one which looks like one of the youths may have fallen through. This is an extremely dangerous activity. The sails are not designed to carry weight and be used as a trampoline. Children are not meant to be in the grounds at all without parents being present. There has also been a lot of cigarette butts and take away food wrappers being left in the grounds over the weekends which shows a complete lack of respect for the school as well. I have also received reports of youths getting on the roof of the Victoria park toilet block which is another dangerous activity. I understand some youths may have obtained motors to put on push bikes. I encountered this problem in Geelong. Putting a motor on a bicycle makes it a motor bike by definition and requires a motorcycle licence and registration which you cannot get.
==From Vic Roads site: A motorised bicycle is not classed as a bicycle if: •the motor is not an auxiliary source of power (a person must still be able to propel the bicycle via pedals without the motor operating). •the motor's power output exceeds 200 watts (whether or not the motor is operating) unless it is an EPAC. These are considered to be motorcycles. The rider will be required to hold a motorcycle licence and have the vehicle registered before it can be used on the road network. Motorcycles cannot be ridden on footpaths or bicycle paths. Motorcycle riders must wear an approved motorcycle helmet. Example: A bicycle with a petrol-powered motor attached. Even the smallest conversion kits produce well in excess of 200 watts and are capable of high speeds. These speeds are comparable to those of small motorcycles. In summary don’t buy these motor kits they are illegal to use, save your money and also don’t let your children fit/use the kits on their bikes otherwise they will be fined when caught!!! Please have a discussion with your children and make sure they are not your children getting up to any of these activities I have listed. The main issue is their safety as well as the general amenity of the town. I have received information of several names involved and will be keeping an eye on youths roaming about the town. I am also having complaints about parents parking in no standing zones outside the Inverleigh and Teesdale Primary schools at pick up time. At Inverleigh the vehicles are blocking the bus in by parking in front of and beside the bus. At Teesdale parents are parking in Sutherland Street opposite the parking bays making the road congested and affecting vehicles reversing from the allocated car parks. Please obey the signs and be considerate of others. The fine for the offence is currently $182. Just park legally even it is a little up the road and walk to the front of the school to collect your children and set a good example to your children for obeying parking signs. Reflect on the example you are setting by parking illegally and habits you could be passing on to them. Please continue to comply with the current COVID measures, due to the recent lockdown in Melbourne and the state of NSW the measures will obviously be with us for some time to come. Keep safe Chris

WHAT’S IN THE CAGES?
About 30 wire cages in the northern end of the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve contain nothing of much interest at first glance. But each contains at least one plant that is on the Victorian Government’s list of CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES. It is the Inverleigh Spider Orchid, and, in mid to late September, many of them will have a single flower at the end of a 20-30 cm stem. Although small, the flower is exquisitely beautiful. They are very delicious for possums, which is why the cages are there. Most of the cages are within a fenced exclusion zone to keep out kangaroos and rabbits. On Sunday September 12, renowned orchid expert and Teesdale resident, Neil Anderton, will give a talk about the Inverleigh Spider Orchid; the research that has been done on it, the efforts that are being made to save it from extinction, the very difficult process of growing the plant from seeds and the history of the enclosure in which most of them are found at the reserve. You are invited to attend. When? Sunday September 12th, 1.30 p.m. Where? Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve, Woolbrook Track (which runs along the northern end of the Reserve). Drive westward for 1.6 km from the Teesdale-Inverleigh Road. Bring: Your camera to take photos of the Inverleigh Spider Orchid in flower, your mobile phone to ‘check in’ and your mask. Also bring your own cup of tea, if possible, as covid restrictions prevent us from providing refreshments.
ALSO: At this event the Bendigo Bank will present a grant cheque to the Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve for the purchase of two handheld GPS devices. This grant is given under the bank’s Bannockburn & District Grants program. The GPS devices will be used for accurate mapping and recording of the location of rare plants and other items of interest in the Reserve. It is hoped that they will also help the Friends Group in its efforts to rid the Reserve of boneseed plants. What if? The event will be cancelled if covid-19 restrictions don’t allow it. Fingers crossed! Further information: Keith Windle, Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve, Phone 0429 651 298 email windle.keith@gmail.com
We have had an exciting month at Inverleigh Primary School! In between lockdowns we were able to celebrate Science Week. The theme for the National Science Week this year was Food: Different by Design. During Science classes students investigated various fruit and vegetables under microscopes! We also had some parents who told us about their work as Scientists through Zoom or Webex presentations. Thank you to Roseanne Guijt, Jenn Barr, Fiona Inglis and Matthew Barnett for sharing their expertise and passion about each of their scientific fields with us! We had a dress up day on Friday to celebrate Science Week! Principal for a Day – we celebrated National Principal’s Day by selecting three students to act as principals for the day. Joe, Dylan and Mia did a fabulous job, walking through classrooms, reading to the P-2 classes and of course doing yard duty. While on yard duty they had the task of finding students who they could present with a Kindness Award for being kind in the playground. The Green Team has been busy planting seeds for our veggie gardens. We currently have peas, beetroot, and radishes that have sprouted and are ready to be replanted into our raised garden beds. Our Green Team leaders are very excited about this addition to our school!

TABLE OF CONTENTS •Spring Pet Care Tips •Zoonotic Diseases IN OTHER NEWS Grass Seeds
It's hard to believe that a single grass seed can cause issues that are a big problem for our pets. The problem is when the awn gets caught in the fur they easily penetrate the skins surface. Grass seeds are great carriers of bacteria and once they penetrate the skin infection is inevitable. After adventuring with your pet check ears, eyes and paws for grass seeds. Spring Horse Care Tips
Here we have listed some things to keep in mind as Spring gets underway.
Spring Pet Care Tips
Springtime is here. With the weather warming up our pets will be eager to get outside and start exploring. It is important for us to be aware of the hazards our pets can encounter. In this newsletter we are going to examine some of the most common. *Bee Stings - With budding flowers well under way, bee stings are a common threat to pets faces. Just like humans, pets' physical reactions will differ in severity when stung by a bee. Mild signs include swelling, scratching, rubbing or licking at the sting. Severe sign includes profound swelling, hives, vomiting and difficulty breathing. If at all concerned contact the clinic immediately. *Fleas and Ticks - Fleas and Ticks are common in Australia and can make your pet dangerously ill. Ensure all cats and dogs are regularly treated with the correct flea and tick prevention. *Plants and Flowers - Several of the most common plants and flowers can be toxic to pets. Here we have named just a few. *Daffodils *Daphne *Foxglove *Hydrangeas *Liliums *Azalea *Cyclamens *Rhododendron Symptoms of plant or flower poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, depression, muscle tremor and weakness. *Spring Allergies - Just like us, pets can also experience seasonal allergies. Common springtime allergens for pets include grass, weed and tree pollens. Most common symptoms include senstive skin, itchy or smelly ears, and thining patches of fur. *Snail and Rat Bait - This is a common form of poisoning seen at the clinic, Dogs are especially attracted to baits. These baits are highly toxic even in small amounts and can be fatal. *Fertilisers - Fertilisers may be in liquid or granular form and may include additives such as insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, zinc, iron and copper. These can cause gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain if ingested. *Snake Bites - Australia is home to many venomous snakes and in the warmer months snakes become much more active. Our pets are inquisitive creatures and will chase, try to play with or kill snakes. Signs of snake bite include drooling, wobbliness, dilated pupils vomiting and lethargy, bleeding from nose or mouth. Snake bite is life threateing and should always be treated as an emergency.
Leigh News 31 With the onset of warmer weather, insect populations will be on the rise. These can be aggravating, disrupting grazing and rest. There are fly sprays and wipes available that are safe for your horse, or you could also consider a fly mesh rug. During Spring, pasture grasses accumulate high amounts of fructans which can cause digestive issues and excessive weight gain which in turn can lead to laminitis. Laminitis is a painful inflammation of the foot. Parasite burdens are at their peak in Spring, so ensure your horse has had its worming treatment. Vaccinations are one of the most important ways to protect the health of your horse, by protecting them against potentially deadly diseases. If your horse is overdue for vaccination book an appointment with our Vets to discuss health related matters and ensure your horse is up to date with vaccination. As your horse sheds his heavy winter coat, check for cuts, signs of skin irritation or any other problems. The area under a horse blanket is a major area for bacterial and fungal skin infections.
Zoonotic Diseases
Zoonotic diseases or 'Zoonoses' are animal diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Keeping our pets healthy is an important part of keeping ouselves and our families healthy too.
Common Zoonotic Diseases: Ringworm is a type of fungal infection that infects both animals and humans. Ringworm is transmitted by contact with fungal spores. Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by the parasite 'Toxoplasma Gondii' which is found in animal faeces. Parasites are transmitted to people most commonly through coming into contact with infected stools. It is important to wash hands thoroughly after cleaning litter trays. Giardia is a parasite that lives in the intestines of infected animals and humans and their immediate environment. Giardia causes Diarrhoea, stomach cramps and feeling nauseous. Gastrointestinal Worms are transmitted by contact with faeces or contaminated soil. Eggs hatch in the humans intestinal tract, and the immature worms can travel to various tissues in the body. Staying safe from the risk of infection from your pet: *Taking your pet for a vet check twice a year. *Worming your pet every 3 months *Giving your pet a monthly flea and tick treatment ^Ensuring your pets environment and bedding is clean *Dispose of your pets faeces promptly *Bathing your pet regularly Healthy pets mean healthy people - when your dog, cat, rabbit, bird or guinea pig are well they pose no health risk. But if your pet is sick, there is a small chance they could pass the problem onto you. Zoonotic diseases are rarely passed on as long as we look after our pets.
