High Street Roof Renovations

For long term durability shingles can be dipped in a water repellent preservative formulation prior to installation. On roofs they are often given no further treatment and will subsequently weather to a soft silver-grey tone. On walls, where access for maintenance may be easier, pigment ed stains are often used to retain a natural lookingFootnote:colour. This was the third home in the main street that I know of, that had wooden shingles. There are possibly more in the older homes around the town and surrounding district.

Bronwyn Price Photo's by Bronwyn Price

These three images are of the home, now offices, on the corner of High Street and Dun das Street. The first image was taken 16.2.06, the second taken 12.5.21 when the contractors were replacing the old corrugat ed iron roofing and the third on completion on 17.6.21. When speaking to the contractors they indicated that the shingles would be left in place as they provided some insulation. The verandah was later straightened with a new fence erected and the wisteria vine saved.

Leigh News 11September 2022 Calendar -

Wood shingles are thin, tapered piec es of wood primarily used to cover roofs and walls of buildings to protect them from the weather. Historically shingles, also known as shakes, were split from straight grained, knot free trees. The wood species varied according to available local woods but only the more durable heartwood, or inner section of the log was usually used. The softer sapwood generally was not used because it deteriorated quickly. They were split thinly to 10 to 19 mm, relative ly narrow 76 to 203 mm, of varying length 360 to 910 mm and almost always planed or knifed smooth. The traditional method for making wooden shingles before the 19th century was to rive (hand split) them from logs pre-cut to the desired length, these were known as bolts. When splitting blocks and manufacturing shingles, particular care must be taken to con sider the orientation of the grain in the wood to prevent warping and splitting as the wood dries. Dressing, or smoothing of shingles, was almost universal, no matter what wood was used or in what part of the world the building was located.Theterm shake is sometimes used as a colloquialism for all wood shingles. In tra ditional usage, "shake" refers to the board to which the shingle is nailed, not the shingle.

Wood shingles can last up to 30 years, but require annual upkeep. Cedar is the preferred choice for wood shingles because it's rot- and insect-resistant

While wood shingles are durable, weatherproof, insulating and very attrac tive, they are expensive to purchase. Their vulnerability to termites and fire means that they're a less popular choice in Austra lia.

After 2 Covid interrupted years where no major events were possible, Inverleigh Golf Club was delighted to be able to hold its recent 2022 Open Tournament. As with many smaller clubs, we were hit hard by the Covid restrictions, and it was largely Green fee players that kept the Club going during the Lockdowns. Last year, the Club was devastated to have its Open Tournament cancelled just the night before the event due to another Lockdown. Not only did this mean loss of considerable revenue, but also meant that all the food that had been ordered, purchased or cooked, had to be cancelled. So it was with great relief that the Tournament was able to go ahead in 2022. After a bleak weather forecast in the week leading up to the event, the players were greeted with clear skies for the 3 days, with the course -in its best possible condition. All players expressed their thanks for a great weekend of golf, hospital ity & friendship. Ladies Open Champion for 2022 is Ann Lynch from Barwon Valley GC, and Mens Open Champion for 2022 is David Foster, also from Barwon Valley GC. Mixed 4BBB winners were Barb & Roger Stinchcombe from Colac GC. We now turn our attention to our other an nual major event. Our 4 person Ambrose, spon sored by Cooinda Fine Wool & Bendigo Commu nity Bank, will be held on Sunday 2nd October. This is a very popular event, and we are very excit ed to announce that the field for 2022 has already reachedConsiderablecapacity. course improvements & clear ing has taken place this year & with work on a 2nd dam about to start, the Club is very upbeat about its future. If you haven't been out to the Club for a while, or would just like to have a look, please feel free to pay us a visit. Several new members, both Men & Ladies, have bolstered our member ship and are enjoying playing golf in a friendly & peaceful bush setting. Plains Year 3 camp This term, our year 3 students went on a three day bush camp at Angahook Holiday Camp in Airey’s Inlet with students from Meredith, Lethbridge, Anakie and Wangala Primary Schools. On the first day, students engaged in a range of activities such as ar chery, obstacle courses and ‘The Death Swing’… which required a number of students (and teachers) to face their fear of heights!

On the second day despite the gloomy weather, we trekked from the camp down to the lighthouse in Airey’s inlet. Our students were interested to learn that this was where filming took place for the TV series ‘Around The Twist’. Due to the soggy condi tions, we were unable to complete our beach exploration but luckily the team from Ecologic brought all of their wonderful activities and resources back to camp where our students learnt about extinct animals, marine adaptations and local flora and fauna. The third day was spent packing up, with some free play time thrown in for good measure before the students made their way back home. A wonder ful time was had by all!

Nature Play Here at Shelford P.S, we are very lucky to have large, natural play spaces surrounding our school. Our students love building Tee Pees and using their creativity to make everyday items with the natural materials they find. Recently, we had a large tree removed. Instead of chopping it up for firewood, we now have a beautiful hand carved ‘throne’ which our students love! Our students also discovered nu merous ways to use the leftover sawdust, bark and wood chips during their break times. They had a wonderful time using what was left of our tree to fuel their imaginations and engage in nature play. Our blue stone rotunda was utilised for a range of ‘businesses’, such as a pizzeria, sushi bar, a black smith and an armoury and the pile of mulch was turned into ‘animal dens’, forts and castles with moats. Whilst we are sad to see our beauti ful tree gone, our students have been thoroughly enjoying the opportuni ties and new seating its removal has provided.

Crack!

It was a shot I will always remember; Played like a champion -- oh what a smack! -The sound of cricket leather on timber-Into the far pavilion -- Crack! -Where no one in their thousands cheered, Where someone should have taken the catch. Wha --- ck --- rash!

The boys were the nation's first eleven, While I represented the rest of the world. If I told them once, I told them a dozen times: "Don't play so close to the house!"; But they played with a tennis-ball And an old plastic cricket bat; So surely no harm could come from that. It was a bowl that deserved such a smack:' And, Whack! it I did -- oh what a crack! -Played like a champ with strength and with skill I showed them how, savouring the thrill.

G’Day from the penners for the first month of Spring. It’s been a cold winter this year with a few frosts which haven’t done my Salvias any good. For some reason the frosts here in Teesdale must be worse than in Ballarat as I have seen salvias survive the cold up there but mine have been decimated. Maybe it’s the vast open spaces in the Golden Plains district which creates such severe frosts, not being a horticulturist or a climate sci entist, I guess I’ll never know the answer. Luckily, they come back in the spring but I never seem to get the full impact of their beautiful flowers. The writing group is in full swing, it doesn’t matter how cold or wet the weather gets we always man age to have fun and get some great writing done. This month’s writing is from Bridh, who calls himself a bush bard and his love of our great Australia culture is evident in his writings. This month’s poem is all about the great Aussie tradition of backyard cricket. We hope you enjoy reading his words and til next month it’s cheerio from the Golden Penners.

(Check out out session times in "Whats On" on page 2).

A shot from the height of a hot December I close my eyes and ears to remember: Wha... ck... crash! Howzat?

The short answer to this question is: Yes! Apple cider vinegar is safe for chickens as long as it’s used in moderation. Most chicken keepers who add this acidic sup plement to their hens’ diets only use a tiny bit at a time, which is enough to provide the extra level of wellness support they’re lookingWhilefor. apple cider vinegar is gen erally safe to give your chickens in small quantities, remember to only add it to the water if you have a plastic or rubber con tainer! In relation to the Teesdale area, I receive on going complaints in relation to speeding vehicles especially outside the general store and school and I have been increasing my focus on those areas and other roads in the township in general. Disappointingly I have recently been detecting quite a few residents of Teesdale speeding in their township and even through the school zone!! Please take care when driving and adhere to the speed limits, I should not be detecting locals speeding in their own towns.

Starting to see a bit of publicity in relation to the Great Victorian bike ride stopping over night in Inverleigh on the 3/12/2022 will proba bly involve 1000’s of riders staying overnight in the town.Winter is coming to an end, the football and Netball seasons are wrapping up, spring is upon us and there will be plenty of work in the gardens. I recently attended the Inverleigh com munity food swap and it was good to see a few locals there and even the mayor. I don’t mind growing a few vegetables and have been prepar ing a few garden beds at the back of the station so I am looking forward to a bumper crop this summer and a few more visits at the food swap.

Excessive speeders: I am still getting a couple of these, in recent weeks, I caught a probationary driver from a neighbouring town 142 km/h in the 100 km/h zone on the Hamilton Hwy Inverleigh near the railway crossing heading Geelong bound around 9.30 at night. On another occasion I caught a SA driver heading West on the Hamilton Highway Inverleigh 102 in the 60 km/h speed zone approach ing the bridge over the Leigh River around 10.30 pm. Both received infringements for $786 with attached 6 month licence suspensions. Please talk to your young probationary drivers regarding the dan gers and consequences of getting caught at excessive speed. Over the years I have detected numerous probationary drivers travelling at ridiculous speeds for no real reason, they don’t seem to consider how losing their licence for 6 or 12 months will affect their lives until they are faced with that on the side of the road.Iattended a school bus collision recently on the Bannockburn Shelford Road Teesdale in the 80 km/h zone near Marabah Drive. The bus was return ing with children from a school camp and ran off the road for no apparent reason and collided with trees and a concrete drain and it was very fortunate that it didn’t roll over. Three occupants were conveyed to the Geelong hospital and the bus required towing due to the extensive damage it suffered. Luckily all the injured were released from hospital a short time afterwards. The Police investigation is on going and witnesses to the driving behaviour of the bus prior to the collision are encouraged to contact me at Inverleigh phone 5265 1211.

Come along and enjoy a glimpse of the hidden wonders of the Inver leigh Nature Conservation Reserve. As winter draws to a close, the reserve is about to burst into a riot of colour with the coming of the warmer Spring weather . The reserve is host to a myri ad of flowering plants – from tiny groundcovers to the tall MannaBlueGums.Squills, a native lily, is one of the first to appear, carpeting the ground over much of the more open areas of the reserve, closely followed by the Gold en Moth and Rabbit Ears orchids. By mid-September, a multitude of species of lily, orchid and other small flowering plants are covering the ground. Species to look out for are Parrot Peas (sever al species) with their yellow, orange and red flowers, the white Milkmaids, Scented Sundews and Creamy Candles, the yellow Bent Goodenia and Guinea flow ers. The mauve pea flowers of the endangered Clover Glycine should also be on show. The beautiful white flowers of the Snowy Mint Bush will be appearing along Old Teesdale track, just before Dam track. My favourite flowering plants are the orchids. There are around 50 species of orchid in the reserve, with some species in flower in all seasons except sum mer. Around 20-25 species flower in Spring. In Sep tember and October, other orchids in flower are the small greenish brown Wasp, Bird, Gnat and Greenhood Orchids, the Sun Orchids in shades of yellow, pink and blue, Donkey Orchids with their yellow and brown flow ers – plus the endangered Purple Donkey Orchid which flowers in November. The species in flower change from week to week, so several visits are needed to enjoy the full range. The guided walk will only provide a snapshot of the reserve in Spring.

With the demand from consumers and govern ment legislation we are going to see a lot more electric cars on the road both now and in the years to come. Currently there are about 14,000 electric cars in Victoria and the projected estimate by 2030 will be about 450,000.

Electric cars appear to just as safe if not safer than liquid fuel cars when it comes to catching fire after being involved in an accident. So the major differences are that there is danger with live wiring that contains high electric voltage capable of killing, and if it does catch fire they are a lot harder to put out. The contents of the batteries once on fire are very hard to extinguish and also burn with an intense heat. They can also produce a vapour cloud as the batteries start to break down once damaged and this is toxic and can ignite in some cases.

About a third of Electric car fires happen when the vehicle is being charged. It is unclear if there are re ally any significant factors causing this, but it does seem

Electric Vehicles

So this is a massive change in our transport methods and so we will be encountering 3 main types of vehicles instead of the liquid fuel types we have had up until now, there will also be electric and hybrid cars (Liquid fuel and electric) to deal with.

Another device that are becoming popular are electric bikes and scooters and while a lot smaller than the cars run a similar concept of a chargeable battery driving a motor to aid propulsion. It seems a lot of these devices have variable quality of construction and materials and during the charging cycle, some are prone to catch fire. They don’t seem to be governed by design rules and regulations like the cars have to be. This is of great concern if it’s being charged inside the home as it could set the house alight. So if possible when charging these types of transport, try and do it in an area outside the home and away from flammable materials, a shed or a carport would be ideal. Make sure it is not damp or wet though, as electricity and water are a dangerous mix. Motoring change is underway and it is a classic case of moving with the times. Take care. Ewen peel.

It may be the greatest impact Covid-19 is hav ing on us is re-evaluating our community life. 55% are thinking about the meaning of life and 70% of Aussies have no desire to go back to the way things were in their gatherings. Covid-19 is causing us to change our way of thinking, what and how we talk, and what we do as a part of community.Ourexperience of Covid-19 has the potential for us to see a renewal of community. Whether community is expressed as marriage, de-facto, family, church, commu nity organisation, sporting club, workplace, village, town, city, nation, even global, there is potential for us to move toward the world as Jesus imagined it, and referred to as the kingdom of God. Covid-19 is an invitation for us to change our heart and mind and implement other options to deepen community life.

Covid-19 has been an experience none of us ever imag ined. It is an experience that has caused most of us to re-evaluate our life and community. In Christianity we talk about the need for repentance. It is unfortunate, I think, that we only associate repentance with sin. Sin is not only about breaking rules or commandments. Sins are all those things we think, say, or do, or do not think, say, or do, which damages relationships, or potential relationships, with God, with others, and self. The bible understands repentance more broadly than sin. In Mark’s gospel Jesus introduces his message, saying, “The king dom of God is at hand, repent and believe the good news.” Jesus’ message of God’s kingdom is for a new and better world. His call to repentance is an invitation change from what is to what can be and we need to trust (believe) in how the world he teaches it could be.This word from the biblical Greek we translate as repent is metanoia. Literally it means, meta, to change, and noia, nerve; to change our mind. In Greek thought, unlike our romantic mov ies of following our heart, the mind and the heart are inseparable; repentance is to change your heart and your mind. However, to change your heart and mind requires open ness to the possibility that there may be another way of thinking, speaking, and doing. Repentance, therefore, implies openness to new possibilities.Socialresearcher, Mark McCrindle, reports that because of Covid-19 41% of Aussies are thinking about God more, 25% are reading their bible more, and 53% are thinking about their own mortality. 28% of those who have engaged in spiritual pur suits would like to continue to do so when this crisis ends.

A personal highlight for me has been my weekend Coffee with the Mayor sessions. Each weekend, I visit a different community across the Shire and after the informal meeting time, I cycle around the town and area, checking out some of issues raised by locals, whilst enjoying the wonderful environment and varied landscapes of our very special Shire. Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble This year, Council is also pleased to announce the launch of the inaugural Berrybank Windfarm Community Grants Program, with applications open from 9am, Thursday 1 September until 2pm, Friday 30 September. It’s been a busy few months at Council. In July, we endorsed a number of road safety projects across the Shire, to help strengthen Council’s advocacy to the Department of Transport and made a strategic land purchase. Council purchased a 1,357m2 corner block in Smythesdale, adjacent to the Historic Precinct and The Well at public auction, following the decision to bid being made in a confidential Unscheduled Council Meeting. This month, we have two significant grant programs opening, with Council’s Community Strengthening Grants Program and the inaugural Berrybank Wind Farm Community Grants Program both open in September. These are two valuable programs which provide funding for local events, programs and projects across the Shire, and I encourage all Golden Plains community groups to apply.

To ensure your pet can properly process and eliminate an anaesthetic we run tests (Pre Anaesthetic Blood Screen) to confirm your pets organs are not showing signs of disease that could put your pet at risk.

If the results of the pre-anaesthetic blood screen are normal, then we can continue with confidence and know that anaesthetic risk has been minimised.Iftheresults are not within normal range then the anaesthetic protocol can be modified to provide your pet with the support required during and after anaesthesia.Ifthe results are markedly abnormal, the procedure can be postponed and treatment or further testing can be performed.

The Sims farm has been utilizing no-till since the early 80's thanks to Grant’s father and uncle. When Grant came back full time on the farm he started looking at ways to improve the life and function of the soil through biology. In 2008 he stopped using granular synthetic fertil izers and started using a biologically made liq uid fertilizer. Also at that time stop using seed dressing, insecticides and fungicides, unless absolutely necessary.

Grant and Naomi have recently started up a multi-species seed business Down Under Covers where they use their own experience and consult with world leading experts to design and put together multi species blends to help improve the soils and provide live weight gains to livestock to help farmers be come more profitable.

In 2015 Grant was awarded the Coles Weekly Times Farmer of the Year. Grant is the former president of the Victorian No Till Famers Association. To

They have seen many positive changes in the health or their soils and plants. They perform on-farm trials to learn and share methods about how solve prob lems, be more profitable and improve the soil for the next generation.
