Children Playing, by Kate Greenaway (1846- 1901) This animated illustration of rather fancifully dressed children holding hands and playing ring-a-ring-a-roses surrounded by blossom hangs in the Morning Room of Sambourne House. Greenaway was an exceptionally popular and much imitated children’s book illustrator. Her gentle, whimsical depictions of childhood innocence appealed greatly to Victorian audiences, at a time of change when the rights of children were being increasingly taken up and asserted.
