Tile Panel, Damascus, Syria late 16th century
This detail comes from a vivid blue tile panel capturing a flower filled garden scene with fountains of cool water. The bottom section is painted with a long rectangular pool filled with swimming fish, eels and turtles. In the far left corner a small figure is shown catching fish in a net. The panel probably came from a private house in Damascus, offering a visual respite from the heat of the Syrian summer to the inhabitants.
