Hexagonal tile, with two ducks, circa 1540-50, made in Iznik
Tile with underglaze decoration in blue and turquoise on a white ground.
The tile is hexagonal, with a narrow floral border and a central image of a pair of ducks with large flowers and leaves curving around them. Only blue and turquoise colours are used but in different shades from dark to light, so that the image is full of detail and movement. This tile is one of many originally decorating the walls of a celebrated bathhouse in Istanbul. Leighton may have bought this tile on his 1867 trip to Istanbul, or later from a Paris dealer who acquired them in 1874.
