Compass & straightedge pattern making with Samira Mian With Leighton House & Sambourne House Museums
Workshop 2: Compass & straight edge construction of an hexagonal geometric pattern from table top of a Cairene bone & hardwood ornamental wooden table in the Morning Room at Sambourne House.
2.
Choose an initial radius that fits comfortably on your paper with your compass and ruler. E.g. 9cm on A4 paper or 11cm on A3 paper.

Outlining the pattern, this stage can be completed on tracing paper or on the drawing itself in pen.

The basic outline of the pattern is complete. When closely examining the table top design the width of the channels are inconsistent and have not been offset equally on both sides of the blue pattern line.

18.
To begin the process of recreating the channels, chose an inner circle which matches the proportions of the tabletop (red). This width can then be matched through the pattern. But again it hasn’t been done consistently on both sides of a blue pattern line.

19.
Here the inner star has been thickened on one side only – as per the table top and its unconventional ways.

20.
These red lines thicken up the channels, again only on one side whilst matching the previous thicknesses drawn.

21.
These red lines thicken match the previous channels thickness, use the compass for the arcs.

22.
These red crosses are a thinner width than the other channels, so it may be worth determining their centre and their width to match the space on your drawing. I have left them as a single line in this case.

The final three petals/rhombuses along each side can be constructed and then traced in each other position.
