Sambourne House Museum Kazak Caucasian rug, late 19th century. Wool

The Kazak area in the Caucasus Mountains is renowned for the production of rugs by exceptionally skilled weavers over centuries, celebrated for the myriad geometric patterns and rich colours. This example usually lies in the Morning Room at Sambourne House. The design consists of four geometric medallions on a dark blue field, the main dark blue border features octagonal stars, with green and red guards either side. Linley Sambourne collected many beautiful rugs which were put in the entertaining rooms of his home for his guests to enjoy.
