Tuesday January 1 At Messels. Took Mrs Boughton down to supper. Mad Mrs Waller. Danced. Stayed late. Stopped. Smoked. No head on. Did not ride. Worked on Diploma all day. (Two sketches of children, one titled: My son Sir.) Wednesday January 2 Worked on Diploma all day. Thought I had finished. Millais called in afternoon, delighted. Pointed out faults. Did (sketch large eye) Bowman. Took cab to Punch Dinner. Long talk about Frank. Sat till 11.30pm. Walked with Milliken. (Don was lost. Found at home on Monday the 7 th) Thursday January 3 Diploma in frame. Worked in morning on Diploma. Altered shoulder & also put profile in. After lunch went to Cutler & Reeds & Grosvenor. Saw Hallé. Went about 'Sir Joshua'. Mrs Watney, Miss Wilson, Mrs Boehm. Tattersalls called. Dined at home. Friday January 4 Birthday. 40th year. Worked hard all day. Did the two Presidents. Long letter from F.C.B. Rode in morning. Did not go out all day or after dinner.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1884 Saturday January 5 Worked in morning on Diploma. Put in Millais' alterations. Profile etc etc. Worked after dinner. 1st night of Gilbert & Sullivans Princess Ida. Drew hand all the morning from Polly. Put small penguin in to hide. After went to Old Masters at Academy. Home in 4 wheeler. Very wet. Sunday January 6 Worked in morning (all morning) on Diploma. Altered Fluvius' face. Watts RA, Tenniel, Abbey, Parsons, Davis RA, Boehm RA. Farquharson, Wirgman, Morris, Fildes, Caldecott, Gordon Thompson, Messel, etc etc, called to see Diploma. Great success. Dined at Fildes. M not well. Gordon Thompson in after. Monday January 7 This day 'The Diploma' went to Waterloo at 3.30pm. Wrote to Stone. Did not turn up. Don found at dog's home. Marion & Aunt Linda called. Marion Herapath in temper. Dined at home. Slept on sofa. Window open. Tuesday January 8 Up & went hunting with Queens. Meet at Gerrards X. Late for hounds. Too bad. Wet all day. Home in afternoon. Rest. Went to Ionides dance for Chicks. Home 11.30. Miss Casellas. Wednesday January 9 Fine morning. M goes to Hamilton Langleys. Maud a bad tongue. Abbey's Pantomime. M went to Wolverhampton. Chicks at Pantomime. Miss Parsons called. Last Emma. Great fun with Roy. Missed trap. Home with Mrs Fildes' nurse. Glass with Abbey. P.Dinner. Long late talk with D.M & Milliken. Thursday January 10 Worked all day. Dined at Garrick. Saw Val Princep. After saw 'Princess Ida'. Home at 12.0pm. Stayed late at Club. Augustus Harris story. Friday January 11 Worked all day. Did Gladstone & Jam. After went to meet Burnand. Dined at Garrick. Very seedy. Good talk. Tooles theatre. 'Maas' - met him. Walked home. Saturday January 12. Punch been 1 year at Dr Orton's today. Went after settling about Drawing Room down to Wolverhampton to visit Langleys. Took Punch. Missed Cave. Met by Hamilton's servant. Rode to 'Manor House' Trysull. M well & nice old house. Bed early. Mother went to Ealing. Sunday January 13 Quiet peaceful day. Dull weather. Looked over books etc. Rode in afternoon for 1 hour. Dinner etc and bed. Wrote long letter to Sir P.C.Owen £250 + 30 = £280.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1884 Monday January 14 Drove in morning to meet at Appley. Splendid day. Bad frost to begin with. At 2.0pm found another run. 1hr 25 minutes. Nearly home. Adderly broke his leg. Didn't know it. Tired after. Regular good day. Wore new brown suit for 1 st time. Tuesday January 15 Lawn Tennis with Hamilton. Pottered about. Tried to catch fish. Read all afternoon with reading lamp etc etc. Dinner. Bed. Wednesday January 16 At Wolverhampton, Trysull. Photod Punch etc. After went to lunch at the Underhills met Ready. Studio at top of house. Drove 'Punch'. Home in afternoon. Thursday January 17 Came up from Wolverhampton by 1.40. Rode Punch. Only just in time. Lady Boughey. Good journey. Called at Burgess's & also at Valentine Blanchard's. Home to Stafford Terrace. Chicks well. After dined at Gardens. Fletchers there. Went down to Bradburys' Ball. Young Lawrence is of age. Danced till 3.0am. Home in buss with Will Agnew. Home 4.30. Friday January 18 At Stafford Terrace. Dear Roy came & woke me. Very seedy. Directions for paint & room. Walked to Punch office. Called at Suggs. Cave made mistake about clothes etc etc at Club. Wrote letters at Garrick. Wrote Cunliffe Owen. After went to Kensington to change coat. Dined at Devonshire Club with Waterlow. Met Davidson, Blackburn etc. Also 'whats his name'. Cards. Lost 10/-. Home 1.30. Row with Nurse about paint. Saturday January 19 Gave directions about room. Row with Nurse. Upset about Chicks. Went down to Wolverhampton. Hamilton met me. Polly well. Bed early. Cavendish (old gent) in a rage at changing. Sunday January 20 Seedy more or less. At Hamiltons. Mooned in morning. Col Dickens came in. Walked there to T. Dinner after. No boots turned up. Illustrated News etc etc. Monday January 21 Hacked to meet at Wrotterly. M & Midge drove. Poor run. Came home from Chillington Park 14 miles. Thru' Albrighton & Summerhouse & Pattingham. Lovely fine day. Like summer. Dined. News Illustrated. Tuesday January 21 In morning Hamilton went to meet. Gale of wind. Took some photos. Waddy & Baby. After went to Wolverhampton & home. 2 gents in carriage. Cyprus etc etc. Dined at Gardens. Miss Clark & Judy there. Chicks better. After went to Trocadero and Club. Home 12.0am.

Heavy gale of wind. Thursday January 24. Mr 'Squire' called at breakfast. Balmann. Bore. Room finishing. Marion to come home. Polly came home. 'Punch' came home. Lost 2 shoes. Ass of a Cave rode him home without. Dined at home. Friday January 25 Worked awfully hard all day on January June. Did not go out. Finished at 8.45. Bottle of Champagne. Seedy. Sent Cave to Alfred's & Euston. Punch shod & kept waiting. 'Punch' lame. Saturday January 26 1st Holiday. Went to Ludgate Hill. Saw Routledge. Called office. Bought knives. Fearful gale. Umbrella turned inside out. Called Briggs. Dined at Gardens. 300 Up with Edgar. Home with Polly. 'Punch' lame. Sunday January 27 Fine day. High wind. Lunched at Watneys. After called Gilbert. Saw Peto. Stokes dined. Bed 12 0am. 'Punch' lame. Monday January 28 Went in morning to Watneys to photo. Disappointed about Policeman. Photo'd till 3.0pm. Lunched there. Came home to T. Lovely day. After dined at Abbey's. Glorious dinner. Wild turkey & Canvas Back ducks. Stone, Fildes, Boughton. Stayed till 1.30. 'Punch' lame. Tuesday January 29 General tidy up of room. Nelly Keith came. Punch still lame. Dined 6.45pm. Spencer's birthday, 37. Went to the Savoy Theatre. Princess Ida. Sent M home. Cigar etc. Wrote letters at Club. Walked to Knightsbridge. Home. Walked towards home. After dining at home went with M to Haymarket theatre. Home at 11.30. Saw the Dickens's. Gilberts in box opposite with McLeans. Sunday February 3 Beautiful morning. Cold east wind. Went for ride to Richmond Park. Home by Barnes. Caught up 'Krick' & Coward. Home. Saw Bendall. Lunch. Tom Taylor called. After walked up to Boughtons. Ionides. Home. Canon Harford dined. Taf came in after. Read the Divers. Stayed till 1.0pm. Good evening. Taf & Canon left together. Monday February 4 Cold East wind. Wrote letters all morning. After rode to Arts Club & into Oxford Street & Portland Rd. Bought photos. Called on Reed. Rode to Garrick. Too early. Bought watch at Hawes's. After walked home. Dressed & to dinner at Boughtons. Took in Miss Lankester. Slow evening. Home at 11.30pm. Tuesday February 5 Not so cold. Rode before breakfast up to Club on chance of Gossett's letter. No letter. Home in drizzle. Punch all right. Met Ionides. After looked over letters etc. Sent Fox cuttings. Worked in afternoon. Did Sir F.Leighton drawing sword. To dine at Hunters. Parliament opened. Inspector of Police called. Dined at Colin Hunter's. Met the Carrs etc. M not well. Home at 11.0am. Wednesday February 6 Rode in morning. Worked on President Leighton. Finished. Walked up as far as Hawes. Changed watch etc & got M the diamond combs. At Punch dinner W Agnew then D.M. Dressed. Stayed till 11.0. Walked to Charing X. Took cab home. Thursday February 7 Rode early. Worked hard to get Punch & Valentine done. In afternoon ran down to Brighton to Nottages. Met at station. Dined. Squabbles. Mr & Mrs Palmer. Miss Allen. 10 Brunswick Terrace. Bed 11am after smoke. Young 'Pidgeon'. Friday February 8 Up early & strolled to Aquarium. After saw monkeys & snakes. Diving birds. Walked back. Changed things. Walk with Pidgeon after museum etc etc. Small human head. After caught in wet. Tea. Dressed. Drove to Blakes. Good dinner. Tete à tete. Home. M lost glove. Very heavy wet. Saturday February 9 Strolled with young Palmer in to Pavilion. Looked thro' all rooms. After fell in with Nottage & M. Lunched at Sweetings. Oysters. After cab home. Went to Pantomime. Home. After took things in cab to Old Ship. Changed rooms. 42,

Damp sheets etc. Sunday February 10 Up & went & had Brill Bath. Wind & wet. Met Waterhouse. After A1 breakfast. Nice walk after to Kemp Town. Back to Hotel. Oyster lunch. After walked to Nottages. Saw Truecott. Merry Mark Lemon died. Mrs Jopling was Miss Goode. After back to Hotel. Dinner at 6.30pm. After bill £3.1.8. Home by train comfortably. Back at Stafford Terrace, all well. Monday February 11 Fine morning. Rode. Got shelter at Ambassadors Gate. Marlboro House. St James's. Stayed long but got very wet. Called at Dean's Yard. Cantered home. Changed. Took cab. Lunch with Canon & Reed. After Westminster Abbey. Triforium etc. After went to Club in Taf's cab. Called Hawes. Changed Watch. Plates etc. Cab home & dressed. Drove to Mr Tom Taylors. Uncomfortable cab. Row. Met the Allinghams. Lovely night. Home. M tired. Mother came home. Cave gave notice. Tuesday February 12 Lovely morning. Rode early. Saw Watney. Horse bleeding. After putting drawers in order & writing etc went for walk to call on Sir P.C. Owen. Cheque for extra work sent. Arranged about Diploma. Health. Walked up to town & back. After lunched at Gardens. After went to the play with M & Mother. Last few nights of Court Theatre, The Millionaire. Home by cab. Mother nearly fell. Slow evening. Wednesday February 13 In morning rode early. After tried to work on F.P. Could not, on acct of Editor. M went to call. After walked to Punch Dinner. Called at Lewis's & Garrick. Walked with Milliken & cab home. Suggested cartoon of Simeon in desert. Thursday February 14 Worked after ride on F.P of Brand. Wired for from Frank & also Wm Graham, 112 Regent St W. Rode up to Garrick saw Kendal & also Finlay. Lunched at Garrick. Gilly Farquhar, F.C.B & Anthony Jones. After talk with F.C.B walked to St Stephen's Club. Sketched etc. After dressed & went to Holborn Restaurant to meet Stokes & Gibson, also (blank) After to Camaralzaman. Supper at home. Dull evening. Wet night. Friday February 15 Rode early. Worked hard all day on block. Gladstone & Dizzy statues. Dined at Gardens. Dinner to be kept waiting. Sleepy afterwards. Home to bed 11.30.

Cold east wind. Thro' Park. Lunch at Richmond Club with Spencer, Percy Oakes & old Capron. (Written Feby 24 1893, 9 years after). Good lunch, magnum & 2 bottles. Looked over the Club. New house. Rode home. Punch started lame. No sight of Spencer. Home. Nelly Keith there. Stokes came to dinner. Stayed till 12.0pm. Good evening. Monday February 18 Bright cold east wind. Rode early. Green wrote. Met Baker & Webster. Mrs Goodall's party. After had long day writing etc. Lunched at home did not go out. Put photos in order. Dined at home. After went to see Miss Mary Anderson in Galatea & Clarice. Spencer & Adah went too. 1 st night of German Reed's new piece. Nash's bill came in £125 odd. Tuesday February 19 Wrote letters. Saw Waters. After rode Punch to St Stephen's Club. After lunch with Benjy Baker & Mr Fowler. Called & saw model. Walked to Turkish Bath. Had Bath. Saw Watney. Walked home. After dined quietly at home & bed early. Montalba, Mrs Gilbert & Mrs Larnach called. Wednesday February 20 Most lovely morning. Bright & warm. Rode at 8.30. Saw Watney, Coward, Mocatta etc etc. After home & wrote till 11.30. Did new Speaker, Peel. M not well. Went out. Walked to Garrick. Took cab to Dinner. Full Dinner. D.M etc etc. Stayed till 11.30 Home in cab. Talk with Milliken. Fine night. Thursday February 21 Rode in morning. Very wet. Worked hard all day on month Feby. Did not go out. Dined at home. Worked till 12.0pm. Pa & Ma went to Clifton for Alfred Herapath. (This day 3 weeks (illeg) Father died himself.) Friday February 22 Beautiful morning. Rode at 8.30. Saw Boehm. Also Watney. Home. Chicks out. Wrote letters. Waters etc etc. Worked hard all day on Feby. Finished at 8.0pm. Dinner & bed early. Saturday February 23 Up & went to C Stokes. Expecting Bobby. Had teeth stopped all round. Lunch at Constitutional Club. Walk to Garrick. Got new chain, old relinked. Very cold. Read Rochester. Punch sent back. After went to Savage Club. Taylor, Watney, Conny, à Beckett etc. Late. Monday February 25 Cave leaves. Fine. Rode. First day of Waters. Cave did leave & Waters came. Rode in morning. Tidied up etc etc. Wrote letters. Cold east wind. Felt a chill. Did not go to 'Scrap & Papers'. Home & bed early. Tuesday February 26 Rode early. Wrote letters. Afterwards did initial of Water Babies. Walked to Criterion. East wind. Dined at dinner given by the Hogarth Club to Colin Hunter. Sat next to Linton. Speech. Whiskey at Hogarth club. Talk with Parton & Parsons. Home with Fildes, Parsons, Abbey & Parsons in cab. 2.30pm. Wednesday February 27 Got to work to write letters after riding. East wind. Waters & Benns row. Saw Benns. After letter from Milliken about meeting him at Club. Did meet him. Walked there. Called on Van derWeyd & S.A.Walker. Walked home. Met the Keckwichs. Dined quietly at home. Hot whiskey & bed. Cold worse. Thursday February 28 East wind. Rode early. Worked on Merv subject. After walked towards town. Took cab to Drury Lane. Had box AA. Took Miss Allen, 3 Cowards, Mother Alice & Roy & M to Drury Lane Pantomime. After saw them in cabs. To Club. Dressed. Met Stokes, Mason, Weldon. Dined Cafe Royal. 2 mags Heidsieck. After went to Avenue Theatre. Stage Box No 2. Saw Lady stalls. Pretty girls. After walked with Stokes to Brook St. Called at Dr Masons. Worked on Bear & Merv. Good cut. Did not go out. Cold bad. Bed early & grog. Saturday March 1 Up & walked as far as Downey & club. Pawnbroker etc etc. After took buss home. Rode after in Park for hours. Dined early & went to see Claudian. Good box. Miss Wilson. Home early. Tiles put down. Sunday March 2 In morning rode. After went for walk with M. Called on Abbey & Parsons. After lunched at Gardens.Walked with Spencer to Club (7.0). Saw Mark Anthony Jones (Colonel). Walked back. Cab at Knightsbridge. After Birch, Brown & Spencer to dinner. East wind bad. Tuesday March 4 Very wet, did not ride. Punch a rest. East wind went away thank goodness. Worked on Water Babies. Initial Chap 6. Quiet dinner at home. Bed early. Wednesday March 5 Lovely morning. Bright warm sun. Rode early. Sent cheques & wrote letters. Water Baby drawings. Finished initial Chap 6. M called on Lady Freake Mrs Geiger, Cottons, Gilberts, etc etc. Walked to P.D. Blustering Bradbury. Frank not there. Stayed late. Walked with Milliken. Home in cab 12.15. Ivory sent wine, 2 doz. Thursday March 6 Fine morning. Rode. Saw Watney etc etc. Home & wrote letters. Did F.P of Salvini as Shakespeare. Finished late. In evening went to Santleys at home. Miss Mary Anderson, Miss Gladstone etc. Tenniel. Mrs Gaskill etc etc. Supper. Mrs Santley's sister. Chile. First met Miss Innes. After dropped Tenniel & home 2.30. Read Edwin Drood. Mervyn returned home today. Friday March 7 Worked all day hard on the Soldier Boys. Did not go out. Rode in morning. Bed early. Saturday March 8 Fine morning. Pottered in morning. After took train to Bouverie St. Saw Law. 2nd class. Called Arthurs. Ordered buttons. Firmin & Sons. Called Club. Lunch. Milliken. Smoke. Coffee etc etc. After walked home. Uncle John & Aunt Knetta here. Bed 11.0am. Took photos of Chicks from roof. Sunday March 9 Most lovely morning. Rode Colin Hunter's mare to Richmond etc. Colin rode Punch. Called at C's uncle. Glass Champagne. Home, changed. M seedy. Lunched at Gardens. Walk with Spencer to call on Woodville. Also called in 'Nordinfeldt'. Stool at Hollibones. Walked home to Gardens. Called at house. Home to sort of supper. Bed 11.0am. M seedy very. Monday March 10 Very wet morning. Rode Hunter's mare. Colin Punch. Alone in Row. After home. Breakfast. Very busy writing letters to lunch time. Sugg called. Gas. Ventnor Marine Hotel. Gov'r not well. Marion went round to see & be with her mother. Father in law had stroke of paralysis & apoplexy this morning. Went to Gardens to fetch Polly. Dined at home after. Uncle Edwin & Aunt there.

After Punch Dinner called at Club & took Milliken to Savile Club. Abbey's dinner. Saw Black. Asked for Scotland. Home. Marion in room all day. Thursday March 13 In morning rode Colin's mare. Orton called. Worse news. After took Marion to Gardens. Father taken worse at 6.0am. Gradually sinking. All family there. Long weary day. At 3.20am died. Very sad. Spencer went away. Chapple there. Tuesday March 18 Up at 5.15. Dressed. Walked round to Gardens. Carried the Father to hearse. 'Hunt' undertaker, Eaton Rise. Breakfast. Followed to church in hansom. After Victoria from hearse to trolly into the break van. After to Margate. Long journey. Most lovely day. Too fine. Walked behind to Westwood. John drove. Boughtons, Mrs & Miss B, 'your Violet', Fatty, Self & Wife. Gent. Home by 11.0pm. Friday November 21 Rode in morning. M went to stores etc. Did Bismarck & John Bull. Dined late. Bed early. Saturday November 22 M & Maud went to Mrs Goodalls. Worked on hunting block. Rode early. Saw young Watney. Sunday November 23 Rode early to Richmond. Met Bolding coming out. Worked on hunting block. Nearly finished it. Worked all afternoon. Cold hard frost. Monday November 24 Worked hard on Almanack blocks. Finished hunting block. Rode in middle of day 12.45. Very cold hard frost. After began 2 nd hunting block. Should have gone to old Knockles. Too cold. Tuesday November 25. Worked on Almanack hard all day. Barker came to dinner & stayed all night. Went to the play Diplomacy. Drove Punch. Home supper & pipe. Won't act. Wednesday November 26 Worked on Almanack. Finished the 2nd hunting picture at 11.0am. After rode. Began the Joke picture. Walked to Punch Dinner. Good dinner. Bradbury & swords etc etc. With Furniss home. Home at 11.30. Long talk with F.C.B about horse's head. Thursday November 27 Worked on last Almanack block 'The Joke'. Finished 1.30pm. Rode in middle of day. Saw Woodville. Friday November 28 Did not ride. Hard long day. Ma came up. Lunched with us. Drew November. Spencer came in to dinner. Good dinner. Long smoke & bed 12.30. Spencer paid for Cobweb £40. Walked to Club. Cold. Lunch. Saw Cap'n Ford & Evans. After met M at Painters Hall. Lost carriage. Home by carriage. Altered drawers. After dinner went to smoke pipe Abbey's. Home 1.15. Fildes, Hunter, Boughton, Sargent, Andrew Lang, Austin Dobson, Nathrop, Abbey, Parsons, Macbeth & self etc etc Millet. Sunday November 30 Cold Raw morning. Rode Pippin to Roehampton, Richmond Park & home. Went unaccountably lame, D- him. Home to early dinner. Wickclyffe Taylor called, also Heron Allen. Sunday December 14 Rode in morning to Richmond Park. Lockwood caught me up. After Colin H. Went & had glass of champagne at Colin H's. After lunch went with M to Lewis's & Tuers & Boughtons. After dined quietly at home. Monday December 15 Rode at noon. Worked after on block for W.B page. Tuesday December 16 Rode at 12.0. Met Woodville. Pippin went hoppy again. Home & worked on page for W.B. After walked to Punch Dinner. Egg flip etc. Played Tennis at 10.0am with Tuer & 4. Frost. Arts Club dinner. Looked in with Tenniel etc.

Rode with S.J in morning thro' Battersea Park. Pippin better. Conny in after dinner to see Marion. Called in morning. Saturday December 20 Pouring & hopelessly wet morning. Worked W.B. Did girl & sunset. After Tennis at Tuers 4 games. After home. Drove Punch up to Bristol Hotel. Called at Bath Hotel. Met Mrs Cohen & son. After to Comedy Theatre. Poor piece. Gt Mogul. Bed early after smoke. M seedy. Monday December 22 Fine clear morning. Rode Pippin. Sound. Spencer seedy. Came back. Worked on drawing for W.B. After met Miss Huxleys at Tuers rink. Good game with Fahey. After tea at Stafford Terr commenced the block for December. S.J. late for dinner. Worked after dinner. Bed 12.0 pm Tuesday December 23 Did not ride. Worked hard & fast all day on Dec block. Spencer left for the north. After dined quietly with M. Bed 10.45. Wednesday December 24 In morning M & Roy drove to the Shoolbred Stores. After went to Garrick Club (walked) to meet Somers Vine. Late for lunch. Long talk about Diploma etc etc. Burnand & Palmer. After called Hawes. Got Crockeralite stick. Home. Dear Chicks etc etc. Dined quietly at home & bed early. Thursday December 25 Little Tom Worth came. After rode over Wimbledon, Richmond etc. Home at 1.0 pm. Lunch & Chicks dinner. Crackers etc. Read in afternoon etc. After drove to Boehms dinner. Crackers. Conny proposed. No mention. Cards till 11.30. Home. Bed 12.0am.

Saturday December 27 Dreadfully wet dull morning. Worked in room on Water Babies. Girl on rocks. After in afternoon went to play Tennis with Tuers. Cleared up. Poor Macdonald died aged 47. (Only 47. First knew him at 43) Sunday December 28 Up. In morning rode over Wimbledon & thro' Richmond Park. Home to lunch. Very cold. Monday December 29 Worked hard on Water Babies all day. Spencer wired about poor Macdonald. Tuesday December 30 Worked on Water Babies. Did not finish horse. After walked to Punch Dinner. Rode before breakfast. Played Tennis at 10 to12pm at Tuers. Good dinner. Home by cab. Wednesday December 31 Worked on Water Babies. In afternoon took Chicks to Circus. Drove. Ordered Roy's togs. After dined at Colin Hunters. Fildes's, Mr (blank), H.Woods & selves there. Home with oranges at 1.0pm.
