Just caught the 4.45 train for Elmley Heath. Carriage late. By self in carriage. Long drive. Lights went out at terminus Elmley. Barry there. Servants Ball. Saturday January 2 Lovely hot morning. Bright sun. Shot cock pheasant in house grounds. After hare & rabbits. Flew kite for partridges. Home. Good dinner. Singing. Sunday January 3 Fine morning. Smoked & read. Walked on to top of hill with Shakespear Berry Hamilton. Back Good dinner & evening. Monday January 4 Out shooting round thro' wood. Cold on hill. Got rabbits. Shakespear good shot. Lunch in wood. Home. Conny & Effie came late. Village concert. Took Tabs down. Birthday. Very quiet, no notice. Tuesday January 5 Lovely day but cold. Out shooting. Conny came Castle Hill. Poor sport. Home. Dinner. Quiet evening. Con late in room. Wednesday January 6 Woke up. Snowed up. Great snow. Could not get to town. Out 'tobogging'. Good fun. Lovely day. Photod house & Ju. Dinner. Tabs tired. Roulette. Quiet evening. Bed. Friday January 8 Up 8.0am. Work. China. Wrote letters etc etc. Worked & had photo of self on ladder. Did cut of Soldier & Chinaman. Bed late after work. Read 'La Curée'. Fire in room. Saturday January 9 Put room in order & left 11.0pm for Club. Saw Turner about bookcase. Cold drive in cab & awful travelling. Bought skates. Thaw at once set in. Lunch at Club. Saw Macmillan, Craik & Evans. Cab to G.W.R. Mistake about train, 2.15 instead of 2.45. Carried on to Worcester. Dinner. Bad hotel. Slow. Back to Evesham. Dog cart. Long drive in snow. Arrived Elmley at 11.0pm. All well. Sunday January 10 At Elmley Castle. Down late. Wrote letters. Walk in snow with Hamilton. Round Castle Hill. Ju caught his first rabbit. Home. Shepherd & (illeg) dog. Monday January 11 At Elmley Castle. Went rat shooting. Very cold & slow. Effie & Tabs came. Lunch in barn. Young Willoughby R(illeg). Gun went off half cock. Left early. Wrote letters etc. Tuesday January 12 At Elmley Castle. Photod in morning. Went shooting. Ferreted rabbits. Bitterly cold & slow. Home in heavy rain. Bagnalls dined. Roulette. Bed 11.0. Wednesday January 13 Photod books in morning. Hamilton & Conny went to Pershore for ride. At 1.30 started for Evesham. Gale of wind & squalls of hail. Home to London. Very heavy driving. Waters drove me to Park Lane. Full 'Punch' Dinner, all there. Home at 12.0am. Thursday January 14 In morning rode to meet. Burnand rushed out of Park. Called B at lunch. Got cut. Back home. Worked & skemed cut. After dinner went in fancy dress to Tattersalls Ball. Met Johns. Home 2.0am. Friday January 15 Worked hard all day on Lord Carnarvon & Ireland. Did not go out. Photod self on steps in morning. ½ bottle champagne. Bed 11.45. Saturday January 16 In morning bright sun & frost. Rode to Keysers Hotel. Saw Gilbert. Called on Routledge, Clay, Bradbury, Harris. Boots. After went to Club. Saw Col Jones, Burnand, Grossmith etc. Cab to Kensington. Played Tennis at Tuers. Home. Dinner. M fresh. Put up medals. Young Millais called. Bed 10.45.

Met Pincher, Colin Mackenzie & Percy Oakes. Lunch. M in Drawing Room. Cold. Pottered with photos. Harry Burnand called & wife. Wrote heaps of letters. Spencer & wife dined with us. Good evening. Monday January 18 Rode in morning in Row. Met Finlay & Windham etc. Began reproduction Tennyson etc for Ainger. Tuesday January 19 Tennis at Tuers. Worked reproduction of Tennyson etc for Ainger. Wednesday January 20 Finished Tennyson & sent it off. Walked to Punch Dinner. Bought bronze Venus de Medici. Good Dinner. No subject. Walked with Milliken. Forgot afterwards. Thursday January 21 Mother went to Ealing. Worked on Tunnel Sisters of Mersey. Queen opened Parliament. Cold raw snowy day. Saw Queen start from Buckingham Palace. Lunch Club. Mince pie. Pea soup. Called P.W.Office. Saw Cutts. Walked home. Worked Tunnel & after dinner. Friday January 22 Worked hard all day on Mersey Tunnel. Did not go out. Bottle Champagne. Bed. Saturday January 23 Snowy slush. Put books in bookcase & pictures right in Morning Room. After played Tennis with Tuers, Millington etc. Home. Bath. Book. Carriage to Tenniel's dinner at Arts. After saw Billiard match, Roberts & Cook. Arts & home late with Abbey & Parsons & Sargent. Sunday January 24 Tried to ride, could not. Snow. Up & down Cromwell Road. Saw Dietz. After home. Put books right etc. Photod armour. Walk with Spencer to Club & back. Frost hard. Sergent, Abbey & à Beckett & Edgar to dinner. Good evening. Monday January 25 In morning did photos etc. etc. Long day not out. In evening went to Lady Monckton's at home. Dull. Miss Corwin's recitation. Ought to have met Milliken. Forgot. Tuesday January 26 Played Tennis at Tuers at 10.15 to 12.45. After carriage to St James's restaurant. Old Masters. Horsley, Hartree, Parsons. Called Beers Gallery. To see Edgar, 13 Maddox St. Home. Miss Webster called. Began Andersens again. Read Germinal. Finished. M not well.

Chicks in cab. Called on Clay. Company all up. Optician. 'Punch' Dinner. Good. Good subject. Home 12.15. Foggy. Thursday January 28 Foggy morning. Mother went to Sheehys. Photod Stace as policeman. After worked. M drove to her aunts. Worked on Greece as dogs. Thought I had cold. Friday January 29 Worked hard all day on Policeman & Dog (Greece). Saturday January 30 Early in morning went down to Crystal Palace with M Roy & Maud. Lunch at Evans. Good day. Home. Dined at home. Dressed & went with Spencer to Savage Club. Bradbury etc etc. Hume Williams. After at Garrick. Saw Wiseman, Weldon etc. Abbey tight. S.J & self supper. Home 3.0am. Sunday January 31 Was to have ridden with Spencer. Missed him. Very wet. Rode in rain. Got wet through with hail. Home. Lunch. Did not dress. Lady Monckton at home. Did not go. Monday February 1 Called 1st thing on Abbey & Parsons. Played Tennis. Cold & freezing. Violet H. After lunch worked on Andersen. In evening went with M & Mother to Wilson Barretts, Hardman blind. Home. Tuesday February 2 Worked on Anderson. In afternoon went to Club in carriage. Went with Weldon down to Sheerness & over water to Fountain Inn. Dined with Sir W.Wiseman & also with Hitchinson & Weldon. Bed 11.0. Cold. Mother left for St Neots. Rode 9.0 to 10.0am. Saw Gilbert. Waters & boots. Much put out. Wednesday February 3 At Sheerness. Frightfully wet all day. Photod ship. After lunch came to Garrick. Waters met me. Change P.D. Cold feet. After home at 1.0pm. Called Club. Thursday February 4 Tuer wanted Tennis. Could not go. Photod policeman as wrestler. Prepared block. Did not ride. Tabs should have come. Edgar & Sophy to lunch. M went for Tabby. Should have gone to Brighton. Worked after dinner. Friday February 5 Rode before breakfast. Very cold. Saw Watney. Worked hard all day on Morley & Wrestler. Bed 12.0pm. M & Champagne.

After went to Court Theatre. Saw Pettie. Good play. Magistrate. Home 11.15pm. Read Arabian Nights. Sunday February 7 Frightfully cold & raw. Hard frost. Rode at 10.30 over Wimbledon Common Richmond Park & home by 1.10. Galloping ass in Park. Nutmeg slipped. Quiet afternoon. Maclarens called. Dined at home quietly. Monday February 8 Riot in West End after meeting. Worked & wrote letters. Did not go out all day. Tenniel called. Bought paper in evening. Tuesday February 9 Dense fog. Very cold. Worked in morning, Andersen, & wrote letters. Did not Tennis. After in afternoon rode round Park with Tenniel. Watney dined. After went to see Mikado. Supper at Club. Home. Dense fog coming home. Ma came from Westwood. Wednesday February 10 Very cold. Took Roy & M to Pantomime. Walked to look at ice. Saw skating on Round Pond. Warned off Serpentine. Home. Called on Bank Manager. Took cab to Club. Furniss at club. Lunch, cold fowl. Walked with Furniss to Punch Dinner. After to Maclarens. Slow very. Home by Doctor's carriage. Thursday February 11 Worked in morning. Skemed Punch & Puppets. After sent Waters for the puppets to Stores. Dined at Maclarens. Met Forth etc etc. Slow dinner. Friday February 12 Rode before breakfast. Worked all day, Punch hanging Puppets. Finished 9.30 (across page: This cut created great animosity on acct of its being too strong.) Late dinner. Bed 12.30. Saturday February 13 Warm weather again. Photod puppets & developed. At 3.15 rode over Wimbledon. Stopped by red flag. Home along road. Dined at home. Club after. In evening went to Pavilion. After to Garrick. Supper. Weldon, Col & Cap'n Jones. Stayed till 2.30. Home 3.0am. Bed. Sunday February 14 Up 9.30. Wet morning. Rode with Cartwright round Wimbledon & Richmond & home. Spencer in after lunch. Dumps about Mrs O. Tidied up. Bookcases etc etc. Wrote. To go to Boehms. Went to Boehms. Dull evening. Flower, F.C.B, Northcote, Whistler, Irving, Sir Trevor Lawrence, Lord Russell there. Drury Lane after. Supper with Spencer. Joe Knight talked after. Home 2.0am. Tuesday February 16 Dull cold east wind. Played Tennis with Tuer & Allen & Millington. Left 12.0am. Could not photo. Worked after. Put things in order. Wednesday February 17 Dull cold east wind. Worked on drawing for Andersens. Cut of Socialists came out. Little thought such a bother would be made about it. Mother & Polly went to Circus. Dined Punch Dinner. Home after. Thursday February 18 Cold dull east wind. In morning went to Grosvenor Gallery. Met Tenniel. Called at Wilkinson & Kidds. Rode in Park. Met Finlay. After went to lunch with Godfrey Turner & Dickens. Good lunch, very. Circus after. On to Stafford Terr. Worked on Navy of Future. Bed 11.0pm. Dined quietly at home. Friday February 19 Cold dull east wind. Mother went to Conny's. Worked hard all day on cut for the Navy of future. Did not go out. Dined at home. Bed 11.0pm. Saturday February 20 Dull cold east wind. At 10.0am breakfasted with Weldon, saw Platinotype Process. After cab to Sands & Hunter. Club. Covent Garden. On to Platinotype Process Company's offices. Meaghers. Back to Club. After Covent Garden, photod clowns. Back to Club. Lunch. Saw Weldon, Christie told me about action against Punch. On to Punch Offices. Saw F.C.B, Milliken, Bradbury etc. Walked back to Club. Cab & home. Dressed & went to Furniss's to dinner. Tenniel & Burton Barkers there, Miss Furniss. Talk about 'Punch' cut. Home. Cold. Sunday February 21 Cold dull east wind. In morning rode with Cartwright over Wimbledon & Richmond. Galloping horse. Home. Great Socialist meeting in Hyde Pk. Nervous about house. Baker & Cartwright dined with us. Good evening. Monday February 22 Dull cold east wind. Wrote letters. Changed slides etc etc. Mother came from Conny's. Tuesday February 23 Rode before breakfast. Met Hake. Came home on acct of snow. Bitterly cold. Worked Andersen. In evening went to Toole's Theatre. Saw Faust. Very good. Home 11.30. Very slippery.

Discussion on cut of Puppet Show. Home 11.30pm. Thursday February 25 Began work early on Police cut. Photod policemen & tramp. After worked, & worked till 12.30am. (Cut not used after.) Friday February 26 Worked hard all day on Police cut. (Not used after.) (Pencil note: Used 3 years after, 13 May '90) Photod labourer in morning. Dined at 6.30 & after went to the Lyceum with M to see Faust. Home at 11.30pm. (Pencil note: Saw this twice in '94 April.) Saturday February 27 In morning put Photo House in complete order & pottered about. In afternoon same. Afterwards dined early & went to the Court Theatre. Bitterly cold. Supper at Garrick. Home 2.45am. Waited ¾ hour for supper. Savile Clarke, Justin McCarthy. Sunday February 28 Up at 10.30. Rode. Bitterly cold. Wretched ride round by Putney & home. Missed Waters. Lunch at home. Spoilt prints. Wrote lots of letters. Very cold. Snow. Mr & Mrs Fildes dined with us. Monday March 1 Up till 1.0am, Fildes's here. Bed. In morning very cold & heavy fall of snow. Sent Waters to stores. Wretched weather. North east winds. Tuesday March 2 Very bitterly cold. Worked on the drawing for Andersen. In evening took Mother to the Princes Theatre. Met Hollands & Frank Miles. Home. Very cold. 4 wheeler. Wednesday March 3 Worked & finished Andersens. Judy in. In afternoon walked to Punch Dinner. Good Dinner. All well. No block in Punch. Called Club & wrote letters. Thursday March 4 In morning foggy, wretched & cold. Got ready for Volunteer subject. Disappointed about Wycliff. Spencer sold me over hat. Worked hard & late in afternoon. Mother dined last time. Friday March 5 Worked hard all day on Volunteer subject. Dined 7.15. After went to see 'Engaged'. Home 11.30pm.

Dined with Sir Richard Webster in evening. Good dinner. Quietly to bed. Sunday March 7 Wretched hard frost. Spencer came in. Put things in order & printed 1 st Platinotypes. Did not go out. Sterne & Reeve called. Spencer & Adah dined & stayed till 11.30pm. Monday March 8 Cold fearfully dull day. Put photos in order etc etc. Worked afternoon. Did not go out. Dined at home quietly. Tuesday March 9 Bright morning. Spencer came in & asked us to dinner, hang it. Photod in cold by Waters in costume for the Artists' Benevolent. Bitterly cold but bright. Marion could not go to Spencer's so went by self. Good dinner. Billiards. Home by Waters. Met Brassey's friend Merton Skinner. Wednesday March 10 In morning printed & developed the Platinotype process, photos of self with invitation. Very cold. After lunch walked to the Punch Dinner. Good Dinner. Pancakes. Took photos. Success. Thursday March 11 Worked after photoing Waters & Roy on Greek subject. In evening went to Boehms & heard Whistler's lecture & met Princess Louise. Home at 11.0pm. F.C.B bored. M could not go. Something upset me at dinner. Friday March 12 Worked hard all day on block for Greek subject. Did not go out. Quiet dinner & bed after. Collywobbles all day. Saturday March 13 Put things straight in morning & all ready at 2.30. Went down to Westwood with Polly. Saw Squire on platform & Ingram at Westgate. Very cold. Walked to Westwood. Dinner & quiet evening. Sunday March 14 In morning wrote postcards etc. Walked at 11.30 round coast to St Peters & thro' Churchyard. Cold. After lunch wrote till 7.30. Walked to Ramsgate & on pier. Home by 9.50. Not quite so cold. Crum ran away. Monday March 15 Very cold at Westwood. In morning at 10.30 walked to Hills, past Granville. Glass beer. Along Montefioris. Past sands to Broadstairs & round coast to Margate. Snow sleets. Very cold. Lunch at White Hart. Very pretty woman lunching with Cap'n Sparkes. Back to Westwood. Mrs Eykyn (Newman) there. Dinner & letters. Carriage to Margate with Polly. Very cold. Girl like Rosie

Tuesday March 16 In morning not quite so cold. Up & put things straight etc etc. Lunch with Chicks. In afternoon drove dear Roy to skate at the Ranelagh Club. Skated from 4.0 to 6.0. The seventeenth day of March 8 inches of ice. Slight thaw set in. Dressed & drove to Arthur à Beckett's dinner at 24 Gloster St. General Dumeny & wife. Learnt about Mrs Geiger etc. Renshaw. Home by carriage. Wednesday March 17 Dense black fog in morning. Cleared away & bright after. Frost. Printed photos. Walked to Punch Dinner. Left watch at Hawleys. Club. P.D. Good Dinner. No subject. Home after Club. Thursday March 18 Worked. Disappointed about cut. F.C.B called. In afternoon went up to Garrick Club met Milliken & Furniss & Tenniel & went to the Savoy Theatre, Mikado. Enjoyed it immensely. Club after. Home. Friday March 19 In morning at 12.30 got subject John Bull & Stores. Worked hard all day. Dressed after dinner & went to Club by carriage. Home after liqueur 1.30. Thursday March 25 Worked in morning. Clowes called & Turner with Toole. Photod labourer from Nash's. After work dined with Stokes at Privatillis. Bad wine & dinner. Pavilion. Cavour. Left Stokes at Cavour & on to Club. Met Allen Godfrey. After Club quietly home 1.30. Friday March 26 Dull morning. Up 6.45 walked to Museum & Public House. Sketched etc, door of Museum. Photod Waters in robes & wig. Worked hard all day. Polly came home 7.30pm. Bott Ayala '78. Put things in order. Bed 11.30. Saturday March 27 Worked on idea of Clowes drawing. Got rough sketch & called on Clowes in carriage. Round by Club, home. In evening dined with Polly at Hickmans, Palace Gardens. Met Flower etc etc. After played game of Billiards at Lewis's. Thought of Bear subject. 1st night of the 'School Mistress'. Sunday March 28 Rode round Wimbledon. Ended up coming home. In evening Sterne & Colin Hunter dined with us. Sterne free also Spencer. Mother here. Monday March 29 Worked on Clowes drawing for Exhibition. Altered composition of it. Tuesday March 30 My mother came & spent the day. Rode before breakfast. Worked on Clowes drawing. Got it sketched out. Wednesday March 31 Answer from Frank about Bear subject. Photod engraving etc & girl. Letter from Frank to be read before the Punch Dinner. Arthur presided. Saving the Ships subject. Thursday April 1 Worked all day on the Bear subject. Finished it 7.30. Very tired at night. Gladstone as Polar Bear. (illeg) Lord Rosebery's at home. Met Waggs, Lucy etc. Club after. Friday April 2 Worked all day on the Exhibition drawing. In evening dined with Clowes. Beat Winchester Clowes, Cunliffe Owen & took 2 Pools. Home in wet. Very wet.

Rode round Wimbledon after. Lovely day. Sunday April 4 Picture Sunday. In morning worked all morning on Exhibition drawing. After with Maud & M went to pictures. Stone, Fildes, Hunter, Leighton, Princep, Millais (not showing) Boughton. M went on to Goodalls. Met Spencer & Roller etc. Conny & Oakes. Worked after on Exhibition drawing. Monday April 5 Up early went down to Winchester Clowes at Hitchen. Breakfast. Good cob. Meet. Cob reared with me. (Later note: Afterwards called Sambourne, Oct 22 '94) Got away. Ride thro' Hitchen. Burnand wired. Miss Penn burnt her hand. Heard of Mr Booker's death. Friday November 26 Dull foggy morning. M to go to Westwood. No cut turned up. Drove with M to Victoria. Saw her off. Rosie Burnand in train. Mrs Thomson etc, all Thanet going down. Ingram played his chess tournament at Margate. After called at Punch Office. Saw Bradbury. On in carriage, called Milliken & Lawley. Ramsgate, called Hills. Cheque. Cornelian & gold bought. Lunched at the Albion. Good beef. Tide up, walked along past Granville & on to Dumpton. Broadstairs, called & paid Raven. Down stone stairs along shore. Kingsgate, glass Gin & Ginger at Captain Digby. Down Gap. Had to turn back & go down Botany Bay Gap. Along to Margate. Collared by Woottons man. Cheque for £8.1.6. Home to Westwood at 6.0pm. M nervous. Dinner. Read. Bed. Tuesday November 30 Came up by 10.0am train from Westwood. Very cold. Tassell drove dogcart. Gave cheque for corn. On to Stafford Terrace. Tuesday December 7 Began Covent Garden Circus Drawing. Weldon, Rider Haggards, Baker & Tyndall dined with us. Rode at 2.0pm mare. Saw Mrs Boehm after & Mrs McTear. Hideous chorus women. Home by carriage. Friday December 10 Worked hard all day on Lord Mayor & Guildhall School of Music. Finished very late 9.30pm. Quiet dinner & bed. Saturday December 11 In morning rode with Bartlett round Hammersmith & over Wimbledon Common. Slight wet. Developed some plates after. In the evening went with M & mother to the St James's Theatre. Saw the Hobby Horse. Kendal & Scotch friend. Very heavy wet. Called in at Society of British Artists Smoking Concert. Saw Fildes, Keene, Carr, Morris etc etc. Looked in at Club. Left early. Supper a haddock. Bad fowl for dinner. Sunday December 12 In the morning rode with Furniss & met F.C.B at Edith Grove. Very cold. Rode to Wimbledon. Galloped up drive & all separated. Wednesday December 15 Could not ride. Folkestone got cough. Queens hounds met at Greenford Green. Worked & finished (nearly) the Dickens drawing for Covent Garden Circus Company. Walked to Punch Dinner. Full dinner, all there but Bradbury. Good Dinner. 2 cuts. After looked in at Beefsteak. Home 1.30am. Thursday December 16 Seedy in morning. Finished the Dickens drawing. In morning worked & rode Folkestone afterwards. Saw Wyndham, Kendal & also Finlay. After home. Worked on King Bon-bon picture. In evening dined with Frederick Macmillan at the Devonshire Club. Good dinner. Morel Mackenzie, Burnand, Smalley, Austin Dobson, Burne Jones, Yates, Mowbray Morris, Tadema, Whistler, Dixey, self, Hugh Thompson, Comyns Carr, 2 Macmillans etc. Home by cab. Very cold. George Lewis. Cold on the way, developed tomorrow.

Finished 9.0am & bed 10.30. Had Tallow & Grog. Saturday December 18 Frightfully hard frost. Could not ride. Cold very bad. Walked to Club. Called Dickens. Saw Evans. Lunched at Club. Montague Williams, Beerbohm Tree etc. After walked home. Had toys out with Chicks. Tea. After dined with Charles Critchett. Good dinner. Cold bad. Miss Gully. Found books. Home. Hard frost. Bed. Tallow & grog. Sunday December 19 Frightfully hard frost. Could not ride. Cold better. Up at 10.0am. Put things in order. After lunch went for walk with M & Roy. Put things straight. Drawings away etc. M & Mother went in carriage to get things for dinner. Pipe burst & water in house. Gas man came. Mr Morris called about soap. After Burnands, Mrs Geiger, Mr Lockyer, Guthrie & Baker to dine here tonight. Good evening & dinner. Whiskey flask knocked over. Tuesday December 21 Beastly morning. Hard frost. Rather seedy. Could not photo, much to my disgust. Spencer called & took M out in Victoria. Dull wretched weather. Walked up to Club. Lunched & walked back. Had 2 sausages for lunch. Saw Roy & Maud buying Xmas tree. Dined in evening at the Joachims. Met Arthur Burnand & also Dickens & man like Sir Wm Wiseman. Collared by Dickens's recitation. Hard frost. Wednesday December 22 Worked all day & late into the evening on Mr Punch's Political Party. Finished it at 1.30. Swain sent early in the morning for it. Snatched some dinner. Thursday December 23 Rode Folkestone in morning round Wimbledon & Richmond. Saw them skating in the Park. Glass of Beer & biscuit. Home. Lunch. Commenced Tuer's drawing. Conny called. Friday December 24 In morning rode to Wimbledon on Folkestone. Got wet & blistered. After took cab to Garrick. Lunch. Saw F.C.B & Jones, Meredith & Merivale, Hatton, etc etc. Heavy rain. Went to Milliken & Lawley & Saddler etc etc. Cab home. Left umbrella. Lost at last. Dressed & went down to Olympia. Dined there & saw performance after. Marion came with Spencer.
