Saturday January 1 Very cold in morning. Hard frost. Called in to see horses. M & self walked up to top of Row. Cab to St James's Restaurant. Chop & sausages. After to Royal Academy Old Masters. Saw Lady Wentworth, Taylors, Maxwells, Arthur Burnand, Stranger etc. Took M to her mother's. After to Club. Saw Jones, Merivale etc. Wrote letters. Walk home, sent M & Judy by cab. Row about horse etc etc. Dined at home. Read 'She'. Bed. Sunday January 2 Bitterly cold. Hoar frost. At 12.0 started for Barn Elms to skate. Did skate. 2 girls & 2 men on. Robin fed out of hand in Summer House. Walked home.

Mother there. Read Rider Haggard's 'She'. Bed after. Did not work.

Monday January 3 This day I worked on drawing for Augustus Harris. Invitation for the Baddeley night. Sent it off at 7.0pm. Quiet dinner & bed early.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 Tuesday January 4 rd Birthday 43 year. In morning tidied up. Walked to Club. Frost again.

Lunched on minced beef. Saw Merivale & Col Jones. Walked after & called on Mother at Bath. Very slippery. Worked on Mr Coren's book after. Bed early. Bottle of Ayala New Wine Impl pint.

Wednesday January 5 Bright morning & thaw. Carriage out went to Mother's at Bath with Polly.

Worked all day on Coren's drawing, did not quite finish it. Walked as far as Ogden & Cookes. Blew him up. Afterwards cab to Punch Dinner. Anstey Guthries first dinner. Good company. Left. Home with Guthrie in cab.

Tattersall's dinner, did not go.

Thursday January 6 Hard frost again. Roy not quite the thing. Maud to go to Messels. Roy at home. Finished Coren's drawing. Began Goschen as Hound. F.C.B wrote to ask me to dine at Steak. Walked up to Steak. Looked at shop, Knightsbridge.

M's cab passed me. Charles Allen & F.C.B at Club only. Dined quietly. After to see The Churchwarden at Olympia with F.C.B. Good. Back to Garrick. Wire from Arthur. Wrote letters. Read Huguenots. Went to the Baddeley Cake cutting. Broadly offensive. Saw Chaplin, Sir J.Gorst etc etc. Somers Vine, Whiteley, Currie, etc.

Friday January 7 Very cold & raw. Worked on Goschen as Hound all day. Finished nine pm.

Bed 11.30.

Saturday January 8 Cold. Wrote letters. Went for walk at 12.0 noon. Saw Furniss & Finlay. After called Ogden & Cooke & also at Bath Hotel. Waited ¾ hour for Marion & Roy. After cab came up with M & Roy. Went to St James's Restaurant. Roy & sausages. Girls next table. On to Covent Garden Circus. Home in 4 wheeler.

Quiet dinner. Read Arabian Nights. Bed 11.30pm.

Sunday January 9 Up 10.0am. At 10.30 rode mare to meet Furniss. Wretched cold raw snowy morning. Rode along wood. Met Furniss. Rode past railways. Mare fresh.

Turned back on Finchley Road. Home to lunch. Altered trees all afternoon.

After read. Wycliffe Taylor called & stayed to dinner. Bed 11.15pm.

Monday January 10 Very cold morning. Wrote letters. Printed a lot of back photos. M & Mother went shopping. After worked on Mr Coren's block. After dined at 6.15. Tenniel came & went to Hippodrome. Rather giddy in head. Mare slipped. Frost.

Roads bad. Home. Hot grog. Supper. Bed 12.0am.

Tuesday January 11 Very wet morning. Man did gas. Wretched morning. Walked to Club to Lunch.

Back. Miss Wright called. Quiet dinner at home. Called Cutler & Reed about coat.

Thursday January 13 Seedy in morning. In morning waited for letter from F.C.B. Came. Copied it out. Prince of Wales & John Bull. Walked on to Club. Saw F.C.B, also Hollingshead. Wrote letters. Walked home. Got to work. Drew picture & worked in cold till 1.0am. Drew John Bull. Alice Liddell at 18 Staff Terr.

Friday January 14 In morning up early. Photod self in dull grey day for Prince of Wales & John Bull. Worked hard all day & got done in time to go to dine at Mrs Geigers. Met her mother & stepfather. Also her sister. Bachelors Hickson, Casella etc.

Cold. Jolley drove queerly. Home 11.15pm. Read Napoleon.

Saturday January 15 Up at 10.0am. After walked M as far as Marion Pollock's. Snow. On to Cutler & Reeds. After to Farmer & Rogers Indian Warehouse. On to White's in Bow Street. After Club lunch. Chicken & ham. After walked home. Chicks. Went to Rider Haggards. Mare fresh. Met Pollocks. Pretty girl. Anstey Guthrie.

Home.11.0. Schnaps. Mare very fresh home. Bed. Sunday January 16 Very cold in morning. Snow. Walked out wth Roy & M. Skating on Round Pond & Long Water. Looked in at stables. Foot called. After skemed helmet.

After Banks came to dinner & also Tristram Ellis. Good dinner. Nelly was to have dined but could not on acct of cold.

Monday January 17 Severe frost. Turner put new sash in window. Mother went to Mrs Carter's after. Casts came of Minerva & Bull. Fine sunny morning. Gas man here. In evening dined at Walter Austin's. Walked. Missed carriage. Met Shakespeare, Mr & Mrs Warre, Burnands etc etc. (Pencil note: Shakespeare & Lord Randolph Churchill anecdote. Who's the Young Politician.) Home 11.15. Snow & thaw set in at 10.0am.

Tuesday January 18 Thaw. Walked to British Museum in afternoon. Walked right into dense black fog. Could not see what I wanted. After on to Whites & on to Club & walked home. Worked on Coren's drawing. Children at Donaldsons. Just missed them. Quiet dinner at home.

Wednesday January 19 In morning worked on Coren's drawing. Finished it. After walked to Punch Dinner. Put scales on armour. Good dinner. Home with Anstey in cab. No fare to pay. Called for letter. Could not get it.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 Thursday January 20 Harold Peto's dinner. Fine bright day. In morning worked on photos of self as Schoolmaster & dear Roy as Boy. Things sent from Gurney Wren & Lincoln Bennett. Little à Becketts came in cab & were sent away. Mistake. Photod them. Began drawing. After walked to H. Peto's dinner. Met Abbey, Fildes, Gilbert, etc, 2 Hasses. Lovely home. Very tired.

Friday January 21 Nordenfelt dance. Did not go. Worked hard all day on Churchill & School.

Tired in evening. M not so well.

Saturday January 22 In morning rode for 1st time since (blank). Jolley rode mare. Not much on a horse. Afterwards lunch. Went up to see Roy. Put scales on armour. Dined at 6.15 & went to 1st night of the Gilbert & Sullivan new opera Ruddigore.

Brilliant house. Sat next Jew Gouche. Ld Mayor. Supper Garrick. Arthur à Beckett. Home 2.0am. Very tired.

Sunday January 23 Very dull morning. Felt tired. Wired Furniss. At 10.50 rode with Furniss & Spencer round Wimbledon & Richmond. Home to lunch. Roy's foot bad. After developed Arthur's photographs. Read Gibbon's Rise & Fall Roman Empire.

Weldon called. Put scales on armour. Dinner. Bed 11.0pm. Marion not well.

Monday January 24 Dull cold morning very. Rode in Row, Folkestone. Saw Finlay. After worked on Coren's drawing. Roy's foot bad. Dined quietly at home. Oakes wrote for hunters.

Tuesday January 25 In morning played Tennis with Tuer etc. Home. Photod self in Spanish cloak.

Maud did it. After worked Coren drawing. Spencer came in to dinner. Roy & M went for drive toWimbledon. Quiet evening. Roy's foot bad with boil.

Wednesday January 26 Most lovely morning. Printed photos of self in Canon Harford's Spanish cloak.

Worked & wrote letters. After rode Folkestone in the Row. Beautiful order & capital ride. Saw Finlay, Alexander & Mrs De la Rue. Home. Groom's horse reared. Worked on Mr Coren's tailpiece. Greek piece. At 5.30 walked to Punch Dinner. Called Cutler & Reeds & on Whites. Good dinner. No Lucy.

Poor little Lucy. Home with Guthrie. Steady cab. Fog. Thursday January 27 Very heavy fog in morning. Could not ride. Very dark & dull. Gas. Finished the Greek tail piece. Quiet evening & bed. M still seedy. Dr Langston called.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 Friday January 28 Waited until 12.30 for subject. Percy Oakes called at breakfast time on his new tit-upping hoss. After worked on John Bull & Smith all day. Finished 9.45.

Champagne. Bed after 11.30pm.

Saturday January 29 In morning up & tidied things etc. At 12.15 rode Folkestone. Went through Row & on to Victoria afterwards. Rode with Heathorne & Finlay. Home, changed, went with M to Westwood. Carriage full. Stopped at Margate.

Bought leather & beeswax. Walked to Westwood. Quiet dinner & bed.

Sunday January 30 At Westwood. Went for walk along the sea shore & on to Margate. Had sherry & bitters at White Hart. After cart picked me up with Betsy Thornton.

Westwood dinner 2.15pm. Minnie ill. Worked on Aegis after. Bed 11.30pm.

Monday January 31 At Westwood. Dull & strong wind. Drove with Mervyn at 10.30 to meet at Sarre, Miss Chard's. Came across hounds. Mervyn & smoke. Drove home.

Cold. Did Aegis. Leather lining. Minnie Tilley ill, very. Quiet dinner & evening.

News from Compton about Mervyn.

Tuesday February 1 At Westwood. Came up with Mervyn by Granville. Very heavy wet in London.

After cab to Stafford Terrace. Found dear Maud very ill with her throat. Saw her. Worked on Coren's drawing after. Mervyn called about theatricals etc.

Walked to Punch Dinner. Called on Cutler & Reed. Whites shut up again.

Punch Dinner. Late. No oysters. Came home with Anstey Guthrie. Found Maud awake. Got grapes.

Wednesday February 2 Bright morning. Colder. Dear Maud still very ill. Went up to her room. Worked on Tournament. Orton came about Maudie. After went to see Maud. Called at Herbert & Jones for jelly. On to the Garrick. Paid subscription. Dined with Milliken & after went on to the Avenue Theatre. Home with Guthrie.

Thursday February 3 Maud still ill. Orton called. Wired for M to come home. Wire from M saying coming. Worked on Coren's drawing. M home at 3.0pm. Roy went in carriage to meet her. Began drawing for Automatons. Quiet dinner. Very tired. Sleepy.

Bed. Orton fetched at 12.0pm. Maud very ill & in pain.

Friday February 4 Rode before breakfast. Maud still very ill. Mother at lunch etc. Hard pressed for work & terribly worrying day. Altered subject & after did single figure.

Dinner 10.0pm. Orton in. Smoked pipe.

Saturday February 5 Maud still ill. Decided to call Dr G.West in. Rode at 10.15 with Bartlett & his son, 1st time since December 11th. Lovely warm morning. Home 1.05pm. Dr

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 West came at 2.30pm consultations about Maudie. Better news. Geraldine sat with her. After quiet dinner bed 12.0. Worked after dinner on Coren's drawing. Orton smoked pipe from 11.0 till 12.30.

Sunday February 6 Much colder. Rode the mare for first time since December 12, 1886. (This does not count short ride Jany 9th.) 8 weeks. Uncomfortable ride. Breeches hurt me etc. Mare awkward with trains very. Home 2.0pm. Solitary lunch.

Slept. Maud about same though better night. Roy not well. Sat with Maud.

Monday February 7 Cold east wind set in. Dear Roy better. Maud still seriously ill. Worked on Tournament drawing, Coren.

Tuesday February 8 Cold, very, & frost. Maud still very ill. Finished tournament drawing for Coren, nearly. After drove with M to Harold Powers. Dined. Pleasant evening. Photo machine etc etc. Home 11.45pm.

Wednesday February 9 Cold cold east wind. Worked on Mr Coren's book. Finished Tournament drawing. Began Wellington. Walked up to Punch Dinner. Called Ogden & Cooke. Professor late at dinner. Home with Guthrie in cab.

Thursday February 10 In morning skemed picture. Afterwards photod self in greatcoat as Prince o' Wales. Also Jolley as Bishop. Consultation at 3.30 about dear Maud. Dr West came. £3.3.0. Maud seriously ill. Did not go out. Quiet evening. Sleepy after dinner.

Friday February 11 Worked hard all day on Prince, Bishop etc. Crystal Pallis. Did not go out.

Maud very slowly better. M slight sore throat.

Saturday February 12 In morning at 10.15 rode Folkestone. Bartlett picked me up. Enjoyed ride.

Stopped Butcher's pony. Home. Put photo house in order etc. Photod self in evening dress. In evening went to Sir Coutts Lindsay at home. Dull evening.

After at Osgoods. Lost £2.15.0 cards. Home with Parsons very late. Punch not good at Gallery. Vandykes splendid.

Sunday February 13 Very seedy in morning. Maud slowly better. At 1.0pm walked to Garrick. Met Mrs McTear. After quiet lunch wrote letters & walked home. Quiet dinner.

Read Oceana. Bed 11.20pm. Mother drove to Ealing. Nellie Keith called. Roy oh! so good. Went with Mrs Mackenzie to Olympia.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 Monday February 14 Still bitterly cold. Awful east wind. Spencer called. Maud slowly better. Rode in Park at 12.0. Saw Mrs De la Rue. Talk about Dr Ringer. Went up to look at house on Campden Hill, South Villa. Also looked over stables. Home to lunch.

Tuesday February 15 Rode in Park 12.15. Mother left for St Neots at 3.15pm with Emma. Worked on Coren's drawings. In the evening drove to & dined at Lucy's. Met Baroness de Worms, Dicey, Andrew Lang etc etc, Mrs Smalley. After walked to Club & Rules. Oysters. In at Beefsteak. Pelligrini. Home 2.0am.

Wednesday February 16 Very cold. Worked on small block & Punch. Dear Maud not so well. Went after to Punch Dinner. Met Millais. He turned back & walked to Albert Gate.

Cab at Piccadilly. Drove to Bow St. Saw Helmet. On to Bouverie St. Good Dinner. Home by carriage. Hard frost.

Thursday February 17 Very dull day. Could not photo well. Did self as John Bull etc. Pipes. Stace away. Disappointed about French Horn. Dear Maud still very bad. Orton in.

Worked after dinner.

Friday February 18 Worked all day on Crocodile cut. Photod French horn. Wet. After in evening went to Abbey & Parsons. Good dinner. Canvas back ducks. Abbey, Parsons, Burnand, Lang, Comyns Carr, Black, Bret Harte, Osgood, Trower, Sambourne. Poker. Home 4.0am.

Saturday February 19 Norman Lockyer's dinner. Reform Club 7.45pm. In morning rode with Bartlett round Wimbledon & Richmond. Cold & dull. Home. Tired. Put Photo House in order & also rested in Morning Room. Drove in carriage to Norman Lockyer's dinner. Met Sir Trevor Lawrence, Prof Huxley, Tadema, Christie (Astronomer Royal) Leonard Courtney, etc etc. Stayed till 1.0pm. Drove straight home.

Sunday February 20 Up at 10.15 rode with Furniss. Met Spencer on Cobweb. Furniss full of Agricultural Hall. Spencer thrown from Cobweb. Long gallop. After rode through Wimbledon & Richmond. Tired very. Home. Rested. Boehm, Angell, Walter Austin & à Becketts called. Sleep after dinner. On to Club. Wrote letters. After to Mrs Ledger's at home. Saw Mrs Turner etc etc. Home 3.0am.

Monday February 21 Lovely bright morning. Tickets for Pantomime came. Worked in morning.

Went in afternoon to Pantomime. Walked thro' Park to Drury Lane & met carriage. Met Du Maurier & May. Saw Gilbert. Walked home. Quiet dinner & bed early.

Afterwards drove to Du Mauriers. Dined. Met Mr & Mrs D.M, Silvia D.M, Mr & Mrs Comyns Carr, Boughtons, Sambournes, Abbey, Collin, Mrs Skerrow. (12) Home 11.30 Wednesday February 23 In morning worked at Coren's last drawing. Maud still ill. Very anxious about her. Nurse & mare. Words at lunch. After walked to British Museum, ¼ hr there. Met Pelligrini. Called 4 Tottenham Court Road & Whites. After on Whistler, & to Archbutts, Strand etc. Rest at Club. Walked to Punch Dinner.

Thursday February 24 Abbey called in morning. Fine. After rode in Park. At 12.30pm went & photod model for Abbey. (Pencil note: Miss Wilkinson, Feby 12, 1895.) Back. Work on Punch. Directors on Ship. Dinner. Very sleepy afterwards. Bed. (Red ink: Took 1st Photographs from nude model ever done. Miss Wilkinson in Abbey's studio.)

Friday February 25 Worked hard all day on Directors for Lightships. Worry letter from F.C.B. Finished in haste & drove to dinner at Mrs McTears. Long slow heavy dinner.

Bells. Met Miss Heilbuth etc. Home by mare at 11.30. Did little work & bed 12.30pm.

Saturday February 26 Up at 6.0am & work on small block. In morning put things in order etc etc.

After rode thro' Park etc. In to theatre. Home. Wired for box at play. Went up to Abbey's studio & arranged platform. Home after. Quiet sit with Maud.

Dinner. Bed early. Miss Ethel Coxan sent pasteboard things. (Red ink: Also the mantle, never returned. L.S.) Sunday February 27 Cold frosty morning. Rode by self on to Wimbledon. Called on Barker. Home fast. Lots of people about. Changed. Lunch at Boughtons. Maude Allens, Lancaster, Schlessingers, Robb, etc etc came in. After on to Dickens's.

Home. Met Farquhars. Read. Changed plates 5.30pm. Quiet dinner, Abbey in by self. Bed 11.30pm.

Monday February 28 Photographed Miss Wilkinson 2nd time. Dear Maud not so well. Frost & mist.

Saw Orton. At 12.0 went up to Abbey's studio to photo model. Mistake about things. Back to stable after. Tadema, Parsons, Padgett etc came in. After home to lunch at 2.0pm. M went to Mrs Skerrow's. Went back. Fog came on.

Home. Developed plates. After worked on Coren's drawing. Dinner. Bed. Tuesday March 1 Dull cold morning very. Harry Furniss announcement in the 'Times'. Went at 1.0 to Prince of Wales Theatre. Saw Alice in Wonderland. Took Roy & Judy.

Left very late. Tenniel came in at 11.30. Fog dense. Cab at Charing X. Home 1.50am.

Wednesday March 2 Dear Maud not so well. Talked of calling in West again. Better at night.

Pottered all day. Rode in Park. Saw new girl 1st time on steps. Drove up to Abbey's & got camera. Worked on Cinderella after. Quiet evening.

Thursday March 3 Dense fog. 9.0. M caught in it. Did not ride. Finished small cut Cinderella.

Worked after on Lord Mayor defending Gog & Magog. 1st photo on new platform. Quiet evening. Worked after dinner.

Friday March 4 Did not ride. Dense fog. Worked all day on Fowler defending Gog & Magog.

After carriage took me to St Stephens Club. Dined with Hutton, son, Jones & Spencer. Billiards. Called Beefsteak. Spencer's Club & home by Spencer's trap.

Saturday March 5 Dull wretched morning & fog. Rode later. Worked & did Herkomer & G.O.M small. After rode to Hampton Court & lunched. Very seedy & ill after dinner.

Home by 5.30. Wired from Kingston. Quiet evening. Sketched Aegis.

Sunday March 6 Dull miserable morning. Did not ride. Cleared after. Walked with M thro' Gardens. After took cab to Furniss's lunch (heavy). A'Becketts, Silver, Milliken, sister & mother of H.F. Sub Ed 'Times' in after. Looked at pictures.

Carriage fetched us. Home. Very cold. Rested. Too much lunch. After dined at Corbutts. Met Miss Thomson for 1st time. Home at 11.15. Pettie there.

Monday March 7 In morning put things in order. Rode in Park. Worked on Coren's drawing.

After dinner went with M & Judy to Olympia. Annoyed about having to pay for seat. Home by hansom.

Tuesday March 8 In morning rode in Park. Mrs De la Rue came up. Had to ride fast. Home.

Worked on Coren's drawing. Miss Thomson called. Mr Barlow called at 3.0pm & told us about the proposed Academy resolution for Black & White Associates.

Wednesday March 9 Worked on Coren's drawing. Too late to walk in evening. M went to her Mother's at Bath Hotel. Cab up to Weller's rooms & dined as Birch's guest at Royal Academy Club dinner. Cap'n Jones, Seymour Lucas etc etc, Colin Hunter. On to Punch Dinner. Drunken cabman & 6d. Home with Guthrie.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 Thursday March 10 Seedy in morning. Fog & cold. Did not ride. Subject altered twice by F.C.B. Finally worked on Spider. After walked up to Spencer's dinner. Lord James Douglas, old Hutton, Self, C.O.B, S.J.H, 2 De la Rues & Col (blank) Home with Mr De la Rue in cab. Drove in brougham after lunch to sale rooms & walk to look at photo apparatus. L.Fildes elected as Royal Academician.

Friday March 11 Up & worked. Continued Spider. Photod Jolley in cell. Worked till 3.0am.

Tired & bed 3.30am.

Saturday March 12 Very tired & up late in morning. After walked on to Club. Met Bartlett on horseback. Went to Steven's Sale Rooms. Paid for studio camera stand. On to Whites. Fire had been there. Back to Club for lunch. Grossmith, Kemble, Comyns Carr, Beerbohm Tree. After fetched stand by cab. Home. Mended stand. Quiet dinner & evening. Got on with Aegis. Read 'Devil on 2 sticks'.

Sunday March 13 Lovely sunny morning but cold & hard frost. Furniss & Spencer did not turn up. On to Barker's on Folkestone over Wimbledon Common. Saw his Irish horse, Oh! Home through Richmond. After lunch at home drew in bottles for menu of Kinsman dinner. After went to call on Fildes & after took drawing to Parsons. Kept at door ringing bell. Home. Bottle of Lanson for dinner. Sleep after & rest. Arms felt numb for 1st time. Bed 11.20. Read Fouquiers Tales.

Rode in Park with Gilbert. Spoilt ride. After Judy went out with carriage & came back because the mare was lame. Maud not so well again. Worked on Mr Coren's drawing. Intensely cold. Quiet dinner at home.

Went to Tuer's & played game of Billiards in hot stuffy room. Beat Tuer.

Tuesday March 15 (Red ink: This day from 9.0am till 3.0pm it was as dark as midnight with dense black cloud overhead.) Snow fell all afternoon & intensely cold.

Worked all day & got on with Mr Coren's last drawing. Annie Roberts came etc & Ugly left. Worked after dinner. Read after & bed 11.30.

Wednesday March 16 Finished Mr Coren's drawing. Squared up. In afternoon sketched shoulder piece of Aegis. Did drawing of Goose Girl. Afterwards walked to Punch Dinner as far as Garrick Club. Took 4 wheel cab to Bouverie St. Bradbury cut. Father Wilhelm cut. Cold very bad. Spoilt dinner but in good spirits all the same.

Home with Guthrie by cab. Lost last train.

Thursday March 17 Kinsman dinner, Hatchetts Hotel Piccadilly, 7.0pm. Bitterly cold snow off & on.

Saturday March 19 In morning early took dear Roy to the British Museum. Saw Cecil Smith.

Lunch at Holborn Restaurant. Roy & pigeon & ice. Snow. Cold & ice. Home.

Put studio stand right. After quiet dinner worked on Aegis.

Sunday March 20 Bitterly cold miserable day. In 2 minds whether to ride or not. Did ride. Felt cold. Met Barker & Davidson. (Red ink: Met Dr Forbes Winslow on bridge at Putney. Written Oct 24 '92, recollected.) Home. Could not get warm anyway.

A'Becketts dined here. Girl refused to wait & went out. (Red ink: This girl offered me pounds to be allowed to go).

Monday March 21 Cold raw morning. At 9.45 drove to Stokes's (bootmaker) after to British Museum. Saw Smith. Back to Club. Wrote letters & on to Kensington.

Returned by cab to British Museum. Photod in Mr Smith's rooms. Left at 4.0 by cab. Home. Developed plates. Quiet dinner. Read Scribners Magazine.

Bed 11.30.

Tuesday March 22 Weather changed. Finer with gale of wind. At 9.45 drove with Polly to British Museum. Worked there from 10.0 to 4.0pm. Photod lot of bronzes etc.

Carriage fetched me. Drove to Club & home. Mrs Spofforth & Miss Hardman there. Rained heavily. On & paid Gillham. Looked at mare out. Home. Dinner.

Judy at Bazaar. Maud better decidedly for 1st time.

Wednesday March 23 This morning the girl Annie Roberts left in most astonishing way wanting to pay a month's wages. Developed a lot of plates. Found out the reason of fogging, light at back. Tilda called. Worked on Andrew Lang's fairy stories.

Walked at 5.30 to Punch Dinner. Accident in Piccadilly. Full Dinner. Home with Guthrie in cab.

Thursday March 24 Lovely morning. Very wet after lunch. Waited for subject. Came in afternoon.

Friday March 25 Maud better. Did Chamberlain & Collings as Elephants.

Saturday March 26 Boat Race. Cambridge won. In morning worked. Lunch. After drove down with Roy & M. Slow. Roy & Egg man. Music & home. M went to Miss Mackenzie's to tea.

Sunday April 3 Picture Sunday. Did not ride. Put Photo House in order & developed plates etc. After lunch walked to Colin Hunter's & after to Fildes etc etc. Met M & drove to Millais, St John's Wood etc etc. Accident with Millais' pictures. Home.

Monday April 4 Rode in Park on Folkestone. Saw Mr Kendal in brougham. Back. Printed photos etc etc.

All met in carriage. Delmar & wife, Percy Oakes, Spencer & self. Down to Dover. Blowing gale of wind. Did not go. Went to Lord Warden. Turned out. Met Romer & friend. On to Dover Castle Hotel. Ham & Champagne. Smoke after in wretched room. Bed. Slept in fur coat. Gale of wind blowing.

Friday April 8 In morning at Castle Hotel Dover. Clear sky. Gale of wind. Out for walk. Back for breakfast. Bad. Went on board. Met Joshua & Romer etc, Mocattas.

Rough passage. Not ill. Good lunch at buffet at Calais. Carriage all to ourselves to Paris. Mrs Delmar frivolous. Arrived Paris. No trouble. On to Continental. Trouble about rooms. Managed somehow. Dressed & out to dine at Voisins. Saw Percy Reeves. Dropped new glove. On to Eden. No performance. After to Folies Bergères. Saw mouse in full house. After drove on to Chat Noir. Heard mandoline played. Back. On to Café. Washed hands.

Supper at Sylvains. Good.

Saturday April 9 Called on Campbell Clarke at 10.30am. Up at 8am. Out & on to lunch at Grand Hotel. Flower. Met Delmars & Captain Maxsey. After walk thro' Paris.

Oakes rude. On to Bindas. Mrs Delmar's drinking propensities came out.

Went to Louvre. Bought soldiers & gloves. Dropped Delmars. Walk thro' Paris. Saw Sir Edward Reed. Curious incident about Boulanger & likeness.

Reed standing behind. Felt very livery. After Spencer bought dressing gown.

Called Grand Hotel on Stokes. After bought tie. Went for drive in Bois de Boulogne. Saw Mrs Percy Reeve. After to Hotel. Dined Lion d'Or. Mansey etc.

On to Nouveau Cirque. Mrs D screwed. Scent etc. On after to Sylvains. Sat in corner. Hot & not very comfortable. Met Lowe for 1st time. Went to Chat Noir.

Home 2.30am.

Sunday April 10 At Continental Hotel. Most lovely day. Up in morning. Stokes came in in morning. Strolled to Voisins & on to Madeleine. Warm & hot. Mrs Delmar rude & frightfully put out. Good lunch. Got there in good humour. Spencer & self went to Auteuil races. Met Clarke, W Humphreys etc etc. Spencer won £5.00.

After strolled down towards Paris. Took voiture. Called & saw Panorama of Battle of Resonville. Good. Strolled back to Paris. Dressed & went to dine at Campbell Clarke's. Met Joachim, Spencer & Box with Egg. On to Eden Theatre. Met Mons de B(illeg) & Oakes & Lowe. After stroll & various capers went into Café Americaine. Saw Delmar. Came out again. Called Café opposite. Drunken girls. Supper at Sylvains. Frogs etc. Row & hit student with hat on back of his head. Disgusted. Walked home by myself at 3.0am.

Tuesday April 12 At Hotel Continental. Up in morning. Out at 10.45. Lowe ran after us. Lunch, good, at Le Doyens. Diplomatic party. Humphreys & Briscow Ray. Spencer offered dog. Carriage from Kellners. After down to races, St Croix Berny.

Passed Williams on road. Rain heavily. Grand stand. On to course. After saw accident to poor Mr Torrance. Killed. Chaplin & Lord Hartington. Back to stand. Rain. Pretty woman. Last hunt race. Back to Paris. On to Binda.

Cocktails. Very wet. Gt coat wet. Dressed & strolled out. Called Voisins, Grand Café, Café de Paix, Sylvains, & after dined at Café de Paris. Good dinner. Oakes ill. Went to Ball. Chatteris & Lady Beresford etc. Saw Stokes & Campbell Clarke. Supper after at Café Americaine. Home 4.45am.

Wednesday April 13 In morning up at 8.0am. Dressed. Humphreys came in & paid £5.0.0 to Spencer. Went down & out. Bought Maud parasol. After back to Hotel.

Omnibus to station. Fuss about tickets etc etc. Got things out of carriage & travelled to Amiens. Rush. 2 Swedes or Russians on train. Uncomfortable lunch. All got out at Boulogne. After crossed in the Victoria. Very pretty girl with 2 Frenchmen. Lord Hartington, Lord Rowton. Harries Williams & family.

Very cold. Back to London. No dinner at Club. Parted, on to Beefsteak.

Comyns Carr etc. 1st view of Drummond. After to Punch Dinner. Home 12.30 with Guthrie.

Thursday April 14 Cold east wind. Woke up at home. Snow & cold wind. Orton in. Put things in order.

Friday April 15 Worked on Chamberlain as Lark. Rode at 12.30 in Park. Finished block after.

Dinner 9.0pm. Quiet evening. M & Roy go to Westwood tomorrow.

Saturday April 16 In morning worked & did small block for Lang's fairy tales. Afterwards tidied up. Went after lunch with M & Roy & saw them off to Westwood. Afterwards drove on to Club. Saw Jones. Monday April 18 At 10.30 went to Westwood. Roy met me Margate. Walked. Bought oxalic acid & saddle paste. After on to Westwood. M & Mother met me. Quiet afternoon. Roy & microscope. After went walk with Roy. Made him run along by himself. Bed early. Did Aegis. Maud went out for drive for 1st time.

Tuesday April 19 At Westwood. Drove with dear Roy & M to Ramsgate. Called Hills. Went on pier. Saw Weigall. Missed Polly. Home. Lunch. After did Aegis. Long walk with dear Roy round ground. Bed 11.0pm.

Wednesday April 20 In morning came up from Westwood by 8.15 train. On to Stafford Terrace at 10.45. Put things in order etc. Rode in Park. Dinner, Punch, 7.30. Called in at Furniss' show. Walked on with Tenniel etc towards Club. Called White's about helmet. Madders said he saw me. Sergeant said man waiting about for me.

Took cab with Milliken to Club. Tasted Claret with Weldon. Home 1.30pm.

Thursday April 21 Rode before breakfast 1st time. Round by Abbey's. Left note. Saw Cobley's place. Into Park. Met Lord Charles Beresford. After photod self as Harcourt Gamp. Worked. Went to dinner Colin Hunter's. Met Orchardson, Pettie, McWhirter, Fletcher etc. Home at 11.30.

Thursday May 5 Photod Jolley as colonist etc. Spoilt photos in afternoon. In evening dined at the Purves's. Louis Fagan also. Very good dinner. Met pretty Miss Cartwright. & Captain Hawkins etc. After drove on to Anderson Critchetts smoking party.

Friday May 6 Worked all day on John Bull, Colonist & French Soldier. Marion & mother went to Westwood by Granville. Dined 10.0pm. Long weary day.

Saturday May 7 In morning rode the mare at 11.0am the first time since Feby 6 1887 (13 weeks & before twice in 21 weeks.) Over to Barkers. After home to lunch.

Sent chicks in carriage to Barkers. Did photos etc in afternoon. After dressed & went at 5.45 to the Savage Club as Furniss' guest. Bradbury, Lord R Gower, Herbert Gardner etc etc there. Good evening. Phil Robinson there.

After took Lucy to supper at Rules. After to Garrick. Milliken, Salomon, Lord R.Gower screwed. ('That's a nice ring' Oh! Oct 11 '90.) Home 2.0am.

Sunday May 8 In morning drove to Victoria Station, caught 11.0 train. Went to Broadstairs.

Dog cart met me. After biscuit & cheese walked round coast to North Down & branched off to Westwood. Very hot. Stokes there. Met Polly. Enjoyed dinner.

Saturday May 21 Cold wretched weather. Thermometer 34º in morning. Did some photos. After rode to Wimbledon. Got drenched with rain. Rode Katrina. Home. Lunch.

Worked after. Did Mouse in Andersen's Stories. After dinner went with Hamilton Langley to Pavilion Music Hall. Saw McDermott, Winklemeir, Bessie Bellwood etc. After had supper, Oysters & Ruinart at Rules. After walked to Garrick. Saw Gillie etc etc Colnaghi, Beetle, Lord Dungarvon etc. Home by cab 2.0am. Monday May 23 In morning did photos of Policeman. After rode in Row. Langleys left. After saw Horse Guards. Called at Tattersalls. Coward's horse £40. Home. Alice Liddell there. Drove to Bulls' & photod flowers. Carriage called for me & after went to American Exhibition. Put out about Percy dining. Percy & Spencer dined with us. No Champagne.

Finished it. In evening after dinner walked to Kensington Palace Mansions & played 2 games at Billiards. One with Ewans & one with Hamilton. Won both. Saw Conny. Home.

Wednesday May 25 Derby Day. In morning Spencer called for me in Victoria. Went to Club. Had prawns. Saw Conny's boy at Kensington Palace Mansions. Down to Derby.

On to Course. Met Seiker. Good lunch. Saw race. Saw Percy O. More wine.

Actors drag & Lord Londesboro'. Girl & Phillips, Lethbridge etc. Towards home. Shot at Glass balls & Pigeon. Stopped by Bobbies from Pump. Saw

Friday May 27 Up early. Could not ride as it was raining hard. Rained small fine rain all day.

Worked on Lawson & Organ. Bothered with head. Finished at 10.30pm.

Saturday May 28 New maid came. Alice Liddell left. Wretchedly dull dark weather. Marion left at 9.30am for Arundel. Put room in order after & mended things. Went for ride. Met Heathorne. Row wretchedly wet. Home. Photod Punch. After played Tennis at Tuers. Pollock late. After split trowsers. Played with Woodhouse.

Beaten 2 sets. Home. Bath. Dined. Drove by self to Globe Theatre. Saw Box had 14 years ago. Garrick after. Wrote Twiss. Read news etc. Dull, very.

Sunday May 29 Wretched dull miserable weather. Rode at 10.35 with Conny & Hamilton.

Round Wimbledon & into Richmond Park. Tittupping black pony & well shaped hunter in Park. After lunched at Barkers. Mrs B Henderson & Wear, contractor, there. Cold bad. Cold east wind & fearfully dull weather. Ride home. Toothache & tired with cold. Dull. Tired at home. Cup of tea. Dressed & after walked to Kensington Palace Mansions. Bankier joke on Langley.

After went with Conny to Boehms & played 2 games Billiards & 1 game Pyramids with Hamilton. Good whiskey. Walked home.

Monday May 30 Wretched dull miserable day. Wired to stop model. Sent Jolley to Victoria.

Made up mind to go to Littlehampton. Left Stafford Terrace at 12.20pm.

Lunched at Club. Caught train & went to Arundel. Dear Maud met me. M & Roy. Walk to house past Mrs T's. After tea walked with Roy to Boehm's house. Roy & Wood. Home. Dinner. Aegis. Bed. Tuesday May 31 Up in morning. Ill with cold, very. Fine bright hot day. Wind cold. Set Roy up with fishing for Efts. Up to town at 11.50. Carriage met me. Went to play Tennis, Twiss son & Hamilton. Old balls. Bought new ones. Good games.

Twiss's good. Dined at Twiss's. Met Spalding, Gen'l Higgins & Froyle solicitor.

Home by carriage. Seedy with cold, very.

Wednesday June 1 Stuffy dark miserable day. Almost fog. Impossible to photo model. Wired. Did plates. Put things in order all day. Very seedy. Did Miss Young's drawing.

Thursday June 2 Dull wretched miserably east windy dark morning. Windows cleaned. Did not ride before breakfast. Letter from F.C.B, 3 cuts. Worked on Boulanger (small cut.) Mrs Furniss went to Arundel. Rained incessantly all day. Sent Jolley for waterproof overalls etc from Cordings. Did small cut also of Dhuleep Singh.

Friday June 3 Photod Jolley in rain as Gladstone Harpoonist. Worked on Gladstone as Harpoonist. Finished at 9.15. Dined & went on to Globe Theatre met Langleys, Mother & Stokes (blow him). Went after to Beefsteak Club. Wrote letters. Met Leslie Ward. Home 1.30. Rained incessantly all day.

Saturday June 4 Photographed Miss Wilkinson. In morning wired to Miss Wilkinson. Met me at 12.0 at Abbey's & Parsons. Worked from 12.0 to 4.0. Home in interval to lunch. Marion & Roy returned home from Arundel in afternoon. Quiet evening.

Bed. Fetched things in cab from 54 Bedford Gardens.

Sunday June 5 Rode to Lady Freaks in morning. Lunched there. Very hot. Met Miss Gilbert & Miss Young. Home by 6.30. Dinner. Quiet. Bed. Developed plates between 6 & 8pm. Late for dinner 8.30pm.

Monday June 6 In morning printed photos etc. Began Jubilee drawing in late afternoon. Rode mare in morning & Folkestone in evening. Quiet dinner. Bed. Tuesday June 7 Rode mare in Park in morning & Folkestone in the evening. Saw Hamilton in cab. Worked on Jubilee drawing. Put figures in. Ascot Cup day.

Wednesday June 8 Worked on Jubilee drawing. Put in architecture etc. Rode mare to Punch Dinner. Fresh in Park. Hot. Good dinner. Called with Guthrie 1st time at Beefsteak Club.

Thursday June 9 Up early. Rode to Swains on mare thro' Park. Met Hensman. Worked on Jubilee drawing. After photod Jolley with boots etc. Girl gave notice. Ascot races. Worked after dinner.

Friday June 10 In doubt about getting likeness of Lord Chamberlain. Began Lord Chamberlain & Boots. Worked hard all day. Likeness came in at 8.30.

Finished 9.30. No Champagne. Bed.

Dined with Bradbury at Newspaper Press Fund dinner. Met Rider Haggard, Cahill etc. Hyde Clarke. Walked to Garrick. Supper. Home. Carried on to Broadway Hammersmith. Roy went to American Exhibition with Lawrence.

Sunday June 12 Worked all day hard, 15 hours, on Jubilee block. Hamilton & Midge lunched with us. Went tired to bed.

Monday June 13 Worked all day till 7.0pm on Jubilee block. After rode in Park. Awfully hot day.

Rode in Park from 7.0 to 8.0.

Tuesday June 14 In morning up 8.30. Roy his bath. Paper. Went with Hamilton L & Roy to Olympia to try horses. Mare jumped well. Very hot. After printed photos all afternoon, cleared a lot off. Rode in Park 7.0 to 8.0pm. Dear Maud came home. Very hot day. Quiet dinner. Roy with bow & arrow at back.

Wednesday June 15 In evening went & played billiards with Evans. Beat him. Played well.

Thursday June 16 Had fences again put up for mare with Hamilton. Marion & self went. Mare jumped well. Alfred Reed there. Home lunch. Worked & did drawings for Mr Leigh. In evening dined at the Fancourt Barnes's. Took Mrs Heilbruth (Heilbut) in to dinner. Home 11.30. Got stick.

Friday June 17 Worked & finished 2 drawings for Mr Leigh. Photod them in afternoon.

Failure. In evening went with M to the St James's Theatre. Saw Clancarty.

After by cab to F.Macmillan's at home. Home by carriage. Met Mrs Bram Stoker, Mrs Loftie, Thomson etc.

Saturday June 18 In morning did photos etc of drawing & Beetle. Bought opera hat at Gibus. In afternoon went via Garrick to Lord Mayor's Dinner to Literature. Sat next to Ouless & Wills. Walked to Garrick after with Furniss & Gregory. Vicat Cole there with Hulswelle, Joe Knight etc. Home 1.30pm. In afternoon rode mare to Wimbledon. Lovely evening. Passed Artists’ Corps.

Sunday June 19 Awfully hot. Seedy in morning. Rode mare to Richmond. Missed Barnes & Mrs Heilbut. Lunch at Richmond Club. Little Morgan, Mrs H, Barnes, H & self.

Rode home over New Hammersmith Bridge. Spencer called & on to dine with Low at Café Royal. Good dinner. Spencer's club after. Met Major (blank).

Walked to Club. Round by 90 Piccadilly. Met Agnew & Will & George A. On to Garrick. Cup of tea. Cab to Fenchurch St. Met Weldon, Walters & Martineau.

Went to Tilbury Hotel. Dinner. Delay over wine. Just caught train back with Col Jones & Seton. Home by Metropolitan. Eve of the Jubilee. Bangs, Elliot, Ford, 2 Jones's, Martineau, Sambourne, Seton, Sterry, Walters, Warre, Weldon & Wingfield dined.

Tuesday June 21 Her Majesty's Jubilee Day. Left at 8.0am. Arrived 90 Piccadilly 8.30am. Drove with Mare. Jolley drove it too close. Row'd him. 2 other people there. No crowd particularly or crush. Waited till procession passed, 11.45am. Silly red man. Mrs Watney. Spencer on duty just opposite & Percy. Brought them in to lunch. Return procession at 2.30pm. After all broke up cheerily. Walked with dear Roy down Piccadilly. Saw Volunteers & 10th Hussars in Rotten Row. Home. Tired. Sleep after tea. Rode Folkestone round entire route. Home.

Servants all out. Kept cab. Dressed & after went to Boehm's dinner. Mr Skinner, Ham etc. General illuminations. Slow. Took Effie round. Let in.

Walked from Charing Cross to Sloane St. Took cab. Whiskey. Walk home.

Put star out. Bed. Wednesday June 22 Colder but still very fine. Children's Jubilee in Hyde Park. Printed up British Museum plates etc. Cleared of nudes. After Marion went on fruitless errand.

Called at Boehms, could not get to Stokes. Rode mare to Hampton Court at 5.0pm. Got there 7.0 very hot. After good dinner rode home. Got home at 12.30am. Wired from Putney.

Thursday June 23 In morning got ready for Police cut. Photod Jolley in cocked hat. In evening dined at Burnands with Polly. Bilious. Hammonds & Miss Hollingshead there.

Home 12.0 midnight.

Friday June 24 Worked hard all day on Warren & Punch. In evening dressed & went to William Agnew's at home. Home by 12.30.

Saturday June 25 In morning did all photos etc etc. Took Beetle & enlargements of drawings.

Went for quiet ride round Wimbledon afterwards. Hamilton Langley & Mrs Stone & Midge dined with us. Sleepy after dinner.

Sunday June 26 At 11.0am rode mare by Putney & across Common. Called on Reeds. Home to lunch. Dull gray day. Wrote letters. Did not play Tennis. At 7.0 Guthrie called & we went on together to Irving's Banquet of 48 people. Went to Black's rooms after. Called at Club & home.

Wednesday June 29 Worked on 4 Noble Burglars. M had carriage. Walked to Punch Dinner at 6.0pm. Called for photos. Cab from Garrick. After dinner dressed at Garrick.

Waited for M from Opera. On to Mrs Ogilvy's dance. Home by carriage at 1.45pm. Arthur's joke about Millais. Academy entertainment to Royalty. No Associates.

Thursday June 30 Henley. Did not go. Worked. Photod Jolley as Cricketer. Got plates ready.

After rode mare to Wimbledon. Very sluggish. Home by 8.15. Academy Soirée. Went with Miss Purves & M, after supper at the Messels. Joke with Colin Hunter. Home at 2.15am. by carriage.

Friday July 1 Very hot. Worked all day on Bills at Cricket. After wired Hartree & got to his dinner ½ an hr late. Met his brother in law & Roper. Home by Mrs Wright's at home. Called for Marion. Home 1.30pm.

Saturday July 2 In afternoon took dear Roy to Volunteer March Past. Splendid seats. Saw everything. Angel after. Home by carriage. Passed F.C.B. After dinner went to the Joshuas. Splendid at home. Little Worms. Long talk with Casella & Wycliff Taylor. Awfully hot. Home 2.30am.

Sunday July 3 In morning blazing hot. Did photos & squared up etc. After sent Jolley with things to Lewis's. Played Tennis. Home to dinner. Midge dined with us. Midge home in 4 wheeler.

Monday July 4 At 10.0am had carriage & drove with mare to Birch's Studio. Photod from model. Bad ugly girl. After home to lunch. Saw Lawes & Jones. In afternoon went in heat to 1 Church Walk & photod Tuer's ground. Developed plates after. Dined with Mr Woodall at House of Commons. Blazing hot. Met Women's Rights people. Pretty woman like Fanny Coldham. Coffee on terrace. On to Garrick Club. Called Cavour. Home.

Tuesday July 5 Worked in morning. In afternoon again photod 1 Church Walk. Better success. After in evening went to Boehms' at home. Good evening. Princess there. Hungarian band. Home 2.30am. Adah S.J. Diamonds & temper.

Furniss's new book out. Home by Garrick.

Thursday July 7 Worked in morning plates & Triangular Duel. After took cab to à Becketts.

Maske of Flowers very good indeed. On to pleasant Garden Party at Mrs Lewis's. Met pretty girl with German husband & Miss Cox. Home. Dined at McLarens. John Bright. Very close & hot. After to Alfred Reed & Corney Grain's at home. A1. Left 2.30am. Met Mrs D, Effie etc etc. Dance.

Friday July 8 Pieced the church together. After waited for F.C.B's letter. Did Police & Cleaning Regent Street. Hamilton Langley called in afternoon. Mrs Ionides at home. Dined at 10.0pm. Settled with Jolley about Aldershot & bed at 11.30pm.

Saturday July 9 Up at 7.15am. Breakfasted with Hamilton Langley & Dickenson & friend.

Afterwards only just caught train for Aldershot. Met Irishman & Notts man in train. Lost Jolley at 1st, after got on horses & rode to Review. Met F.Sherborn, Tyndall & Mrs Parsons & Frisby. Could not find Lewis's.

Guardsman rude. Rode off ground at 2.45 through Farnborough, Frimley (met King) Bagshot. Put up at Bagshot. Civil coachman. Kidney dropper. Mare's eye bad. On to Virginia Water & Egham. Caught train. Jolley took horses back. Home. Quiet dinner. Bed. Roy went to Eton & Harrow with Lawrence.

Eton won.

Sunday July 10 Up at 9.0am. Undecided. After went down to Surbiton. Just caught train.

Called to see mare. Met Mrs Kemp. On to Baker's lodgings. Mr Knowles, Australian, Knowles' brother, Randolph Churchill, Mrs Kemp, Baker, Mona Kemp, M & self went up river as far as Walton from Surbiton. One in canoe.

Lunch opposite Ingram's place. Gypsies & children. Back by sail. Got wet in showers. Tea at Surbiton. Back at Stafford Terrace 10.0pm. Left Mrs Kemp.

Supper. Roy awake. Bed quietly. (Pencil note: Spoilt coat with red off Mrs Kemp's sunshade.)

Monday July 11 Mrs Herapath & Maud lunched here. Night of Col Edis at home. Went. Hardly any supper. On to Beefsteak & had some.

Tuesday July 12 Worked. Dined in evening at Charles Hartree's at St Stephen's Club. Met Hartree, Tenniel, Lawrence etc. Good game of pool after. Home 1.30am.

Friday July 15 Worked on Madame France. Finished very late. Hardly any dinner, things bad. Mrs McTear at home. Could not go.

Saturday July 16 Went for ride to Camp in afternoon in boots (white). Folkestone slipped down sideways with me in Hammersmith. Very hot. On to Camp. Saw Harry Payne.

Sunday July 17 Was to have dined with Barnes. Could not. In morning rode through Camp at Wimbledon. In afternoon played Lawn Tennis at Hickmans. Dined at home.

Monday July 18 Worked in morning. (Pencil note: Must have photod Jolley for Duke of Marlboro. Dec 30.95). After went to lunch at Skerrows. Met Mrs Gordon etc etc, Hermann Vezin. Drove on to Tattersalls. Saw Mrs Tattersall & French girl.

Dined after at Kensington Palace Mansions. Captain Ewens there. Went to dance at People's Palace Battersea Park with Ewens.

Tuesday July 19 Bradbury's Call Supper. Rode after working on Duke of Marlboro' to Wimbledon & on to Clapham. Saw man taken up. Cantered all way to Clapham Common. Met Agnew, Tenniel, Furniss etc. Young fellows. Supper.

Arthur's cab. Just caught train. Home by cab from Victoria.

Wednesday July 20 M & Roy went to 'The Hook'. Punch dinner at Virginia Water. Worked hard all day. Caught 5.30 train. Drove to station. Met D.M. On to Virginia Water. Long walk to Wheatsheaf. Professor done up. Good dinner. Fish etc. Bradbury, Milliken & F.C.B fished. All there. Lawrence Bradbury dined 1 st time. Back in break to station. Got sweets. Drove home from Vauxhall.

Thursday July 21 Worked all day. Finished Lord Churchill as Duke of Marlboro'. In evening after dinner went to Hamilton Langley's. Saw Edgar & Sophy. Played Billiards. Beat Wish. 99 all Hamilton. Home 12.30pm. In morning got up early & photod mare. Made mess of it.

Friday July 22 In morning got up early & did Drummond Wolff block. After packed photos etc & drove to Waterloo. Crammed. Saw Pa Reed, Johns, Mrs Palmer (B.M) etc.

Saturday July 23 On Saturday morning up at 7.0. Saw girls off, Marion, Tabs & Effie. After drove with Ham to Review (Naval) to Gosport at 9.30. Got on board the Impyruse. Took boat across stream. Saw the McLarens on board on steamer.

Man in pinnace like Lucas. After lunched on board. Queen late. Left ship at 7.0. Ugly girl in boat & woman like Mrs Keith. Called at Inn. Got pony out & drove to Stakes Bay. Went on pier. Met carriage. Girls lost. Drove home.

Supper at 10.30pm. Bed. Tired.

Sunday July 24 At The Hook. In morning had a hard pull in rough sea up to yacht in Coastguard's boat. After sailed up & down Southampton Water. Home.

Molesworth turned up. Dressed for dinner. No vegetables for dinner. Bed at 11.0pm. Very tired.

Monday July 25 Went on board yacht at 10.30. Lovely sail. Dull in morning. Molesworth went.

Took photos. Went ashore & dropped Molesworth at Ryde. After sailed home, roughish. Bought hats etc at Ryde. Tabs & Effie met us. Effie in rage about hat. Dinner. Sleepy after.

Tuesday July 26 At The Hook. Maud cried bitterly in night. Rain in the morning. Fished. Had Roy with us. After lunch Marion, Effie, Roy & self went on yacht. Sailed up to Southampton. Lovely. Came on to blow hard & rained in perfect sheets. Got girls ashore with difficulty. Roy a brick. Dinner 8.30. Tired after.

Wednesday July 27 In morning blowing a gale. Went into garden with dear chicks. Gooseberries etc. Yacht Club discussion. Drove to station. Back to town by self. Carriage met me. On to Club. Called Chapple & Mantels. Walked from Club. Punch Dinner. No Bradbury. Stayed till 12.0. On to Beefsteak. Saw Arthur Blunt, Gardner, Montague Williams etc. Home by carriage. Mrs Watney's letter.

Thursday July 28 In morning up 9.30. Wrote letters. Developed plates. Photod Billeries. Worked all day & did drawing on paper of Billeries. Left it in carriage at 1 Belgrave Place. Drove on to Beefsteak Club. Dined. Met Taf Reed, Sir Charles Drummond etc. Drove Taf home. 'Who'd have thought of you driving your own brougham!'

Friday July 29 Waited about in morning & up to 2.0pm for cut. Finally did John Bull & Science. Drove at 11.0pm to Beefsteak Club. Home again by 1.15am.

Sunday July 31 At Hook. Very hot. Photod portico etc, Conny etc. Slouched about. Walk in evening, back for dinner. Tabs still sulky. Dull dinner. Bed 11.30.

Monday August 1 Lovely day. Sailed with Con, Effie, Tabs, Ham & self over to Cowes. 1 st look at Cowes. Photod yacht etc etc. Landed. Bought lunch. Effie ill all day.

Roughish home. Threw sea water over Effie. Back at 7.50. Rowed by two wretched boys. Better dinner. Discussion about Kings etc. Bed 11.0pm.

Tuesday August 2 In morning went with dear Roy & Hamilton to Cowes. Landed after being towed. Bought loaf etc etc. Took boat & went on board Britannia. Back in sea.

Pinkum lay out a good way. Lunch. Such a lot. Roy good. Home 3.30. Got in mud. On to play Lawn Tennis with Bradshaws. Con Effie & the baby left.

Good game. Quiet dinner. Ju lost. Great call for Ju. Bed 11.30.

Wednesday August 3 Last day at The Hook. Photod Roy & Globe. Went in boat with Tabs, Hamilton & Roy. On board the 'Sheila' owned by late Mr Percival. Sad death at 28.

Lobster crates. Back. Packed. Caught 2.25 train. Called Garrick. After rattling good dinner at Grand Hotel. Called on Adams about bag. Thunderstorm at Grand Hotel. Subscription got up for Danvers. Home with Guthrie.

Thursday August 4 Fine morning. Worked on photo of self as Boulanger. Roy naughty. Spoilt plate. Midge called. To dine with Tenniel. Dined with Tenniel. Met Arthur à Beckett & Pilleau. Drove straight home.

Friday August 5 Worked all day on John Bull & Boulanger.

Saturday August 6 Awfully hot. Prepared to go to Westwood. Drove Folkestone up to town.

Called about bag etc. Lunched at Club with Anthony Jones. Talked of Scotland. Settled to go by boat. Took Roy after to American Exhibition.

Tobogganing & switchback. After dinner drove in cab to Globe Theatre to see The Doctor. Good cab. Would not turn round to see fire. Whiteley's fire. Same cab home. Missed fire. Supper. Bed.

Thursday August 11 Photod Stace in morning as Duke of Cambridge. Worked all day. Dined with Ewens. Beat him at Billiards. Home. Maud & Nurse came up from The Hook.

Friday August 12 Dear Maud at lunch & breakfast. Bother with mare. Got them off by Granville.

Worked on Duke of Cambridge etc. Dined at home.

Saturday August 13 Went down from Stafford Terrace to Margate. Lunch at Club. Called about bag at Adams. Dog cart met me at Margate. All well. Dear chicks playing.

Catching moths etc.

Sunday August 14 In morning put things in order. In afternoon went for walk to Ramsgate. Called on mother & Hammonds. Arthur & people there. Saw girls, sisters. Back to dinner. Quiet evening. (Pencil note: Death of Richard Jeffries, author of 'Wild Life in a Southern Country'. Born Novr 6.1848.)

Monday August 15 Did photos. Worked on Queen Elizabeth. Went for ride on mare. Met old Swain. Oh! what a surprise. Lovely ride.

Tuesday August 16 Worked on Queen Elizabeth. Went for ride on mare. Saw Yates. Home to dinner. Row with Nurse about Mary Burnand sleeping with Maud. Nurse took herself off out of the house.

Changed into Dover Xpress. Saw Hollingshead at Grand Hotel. Gil à Beckett, Bradbury there. Awful thunderstorm, 3 men killed & church struck in Endel St. Good Dinner. Took Guthrie on to Garrick Club, no Beefsteak open. Home by cab.

Thursday August 18 At 1st Avenue. Ugly maid. Caught early train & down to Ramsgate. Fine morning. Called Bligh. On home. Connie Burnand there. Worked all afternoon on drawing. Chicks at Ramsgate to keep Roy's birthday & Maud's. Roy home excited with boat.

Friday August 19 Up 6.0am. Worked on Queen Elizabeth. Finished most hurriedly. Rode Folkestone in wet to Margate. After put him up had hair cut at Browns. Saw Curty Hutchinson. After kept by the rain for ½ hour. Home to Westwood.

Connie at dinner.

Saturday August 20 Lovely morning. Worked on drawing for Tuer. Swain called. Lockyer to lunch.

Lawn Tennis after. Beaten by Connie. Sent Lockyer back in cart. Young Burnands did not come. Quiet evening. Music.

Sunday August 21 At 10am went long ride across country to Sarre. Mare fresh. Home by Westgate. Saw Lockyer. Home lunch. Quiet afternoon. Wrote letters. Dinner.

Bed. Did not walk to Ramsgate. Met postman at Westgate & Margate.

Monday August 22 In morning did photos etc. Worked on Tuer's drawing. In afternoon rode to Sandwich & back. Saw nurse girl at Sandwich. Long ride. Mare tired. Good dinner.

Tuesday August 23 Worked on Tuer's drawing. In afternoon drove with mare & Roy to Ramsgate.

Called on Mother. Home to dinner. Shot starling. Arranged to meet Alice. Bed. Wednesday August 24 In morning printed photos etc. Roy's X bow came. Broke. Caught 3.40 train from Margate. Sent traps on by mare. M & self & Conny drove to Margate. M in carriage went on to Westgate where they missed Alice & her friend. Up to town. Swain's boy met me & took things home. On to Club. Called at Chappell & Mantell's. Punch Dinner. Keene there. Home Stafford Terrace.

Thursday August 25 At Stafford Terrace. Did Venice drawing. Gondoliers etc. In evening Tenniel, Milliken & self dined at Garrick & went to hear Ruddigore afterwards. Smoke

Whiskey & milk. On to Aberdeen. Spencer met me. On to George Thomson.

Lumodins for clothes. Graves at Club. Drive with 2 horses to Parkhill. Lovely grounds. Lunch. Mrs Macdonald, Lowe, Streatfield, Colin Mackenzie & wife, Colonel Hossack, Alice Edwards, Graves, self & Adah & Mrs O. After lunch on loch in canoe etc. Dinner. Long smoke after, Colin Mackenzie & Gray.

Played Tennis with Lowe. Banter.

After lunch walk with Lowe & Spencer, not to Banchory. Bull. Bishops Lock.

Saw huge bird. Not much sport. Good lunch tho'. Horrack came. Walk home by cottage. Saw monkey. Dinner. Bed. Tuesday August 30 No shoot. Cloudy in morning, cleared after. Decided to have picnic. All went down to river. Made fire. Broiled chops & potato stew etc. Omelette eggs.

Good fun. Mrs O came, Adah etc. Photod groups. Donkey etc. After Captain Ramsey came. Tin. Walk with Adah down river. Small salmon. Lawn Tennis.

Had a grouse drive. Lunch in ditch. Not nice. Took Truth. Home. Heriot walked. Shot at snipe & wild ducks. Effect of cutting cartridge. No Champagne at dinner tonight. Sleepy. Had to walk in hot sun down to bridges. Brace of birds 1 st shot. Very hot. Lost bird by railway. Threatened thunderstorm. Ferry across river. Funny old man.

Sporting station master. Salmon rods. Ugly man in train. At Aberdeen called G.Thomson. Lunched at depot with Ramsey. After caught 3.0 train to Banchory. No trap. Thunder shower. Kept at Banchory station till 5.0pm.

Rain. Dull dark drive. Arrived. Dinner. Silent girl. Bed after. Paid trap.

Saturday September 3 At Finzean. Up in morning at 7.30. Breakfast. Man in spectacles etc. Long walk up hill to grouse drive. Party met us. Pirrie. Dodd (little old man) Another Pirrie (shot by Dodd). Andrew Best, Spectacles, young Farquhar, Rickman, 2 Farquharsons & self. 10 guns. 46½ brace grouse, 4 hares. Long day. Home by 6.30. Whiskey & milk. Dinner. Bed. Sunday September 4 At Finzean. Dull wet morning. Went into studio, Farquharson sketched me.

After to lunch at Thomsons. Lord Caithness there. Went on board yacht. Met Pincher. On to Club. Sat with tittup Spencer & on to station. Good dinner put up. Trod on dog. Snapped at, fortunately no wound. People got out at Perth.

Solitary Hollingshead man as far as Preston. Sleep home. Dreamt aquarium burst.

Wednesday September 7 Arrived Euston at 7.30. Home at Stafford Terrace by 8.0pm. Letters from Vernon Watney etc. After developed plates. Wet showery morning. Maples man called. After dressed & walked from Baker St to Bazaar to look at trap.

Also called on Maples, Edwards & Roberts, & Jacksons, & about brown harness. Punch Dinner.

Thursday September 8 At Stafford Terrace. Mother called in morning. Worked on John Bull & Yankee girl. Called on Mother. Saw Faith Clarke 1st time. Dined at Garrick with Tenniel & Milliken. (Sir John Gilbert & Tenniel.) After went to see Pleasure at Drury Lane. Langley joined us in box. Supper after at Garrick. Arthur à Beckett came in. Home with Langley. Mervyn engaged to Faith C.

Monday September 12 At Westwood. Worked on Tuer's drawing of court. Con, Marion & self drove into Margate with Folkestone & cart & brown harness. Cart went to meet Mervyn who came down. Passed me on road, came back for me. Called Green. Drove again into Margate. Got lobster & haddock. Little Sydney Drew came over & played Cricket with Roy. Bowled him out.

Tuesday September 13 Worked on Tuer's drawing. Rode mare. Developed plates of Sunday etc.

Photod cart with Con, Effie & Maud. Quiet dinner. Mrs Princep & Miss Levy called.

Wednesday September 14 At Westwood. Worked Tuer's drawing. Printed last of photos etc. Con drove me to station (Ramsgate) past Burnands. (Con & Rosie). Called Blighs about cart. Saw Mrs Princep. Up to town. Punch dinner. Went to Stafford Terrace.

Called Aquarium. Met model. Buchan Wright's suicide, news came.

Thursday September 15 At Stafford Terrace. Did Russian Bear. Began Count de Paris. Dined with Milliken by selves at Garrick. (Wire from Tenniel not coming). Talk about Furniss. Bottle of his wine explained by Joe Knight. On to see Mary Anderson in Winter's Tale. Fildes in box. Back to Garrick to supper in big room. Home with Fildes.

Friday September 16 Photod self for John Bull for Paris. Mervyn came in & helped me very much.

Mother & Mervyn went to Jessie's. Worked very late on Count de Paris & France. (This block was a great success.) Could not go to Toole's theatre to see Dandy Dick with Fildes. Dined self at home. Bed late.

Saturday September 17 Drove all over London & pouring rain to call at Jacksons etc about carton & mantelpiece. Lunch at Club. Down by Granville. Miss Bushman at Westwood.

Quiet evening. Bed early.

Monday September 19 Mervyn's birthday, 23. Tried Folkestone with side saddle. Worked on Tuer's drawing. Rode Folkestone across Dumpton to Ramsgate & home along Ramsgate Road. Went well. Quiet dinner.

Tuesday September 20 Worked on Tuer's drawing. Miss Elmore & Miss Coe called. Went for ride in afternoon on mare. Quiet dinner.

Wednesday September 21 Miss Vicat Cole came to Westwood. Went up to town by 3.30pm. Goodbye to Miss Bushman. Called club. Met Furniss there. Told me about Walter Lucy & my drawing of French Girl. Walked to Punch Dinner. Back to Club. Weighed over 13.3. Home to Stafford Terr.

Thursday September 22 At 10.30 went to Parson's studio & photod model as Britannia. Back 2.0pm.

After developed 4 plates & photod self with Emma's help as Cook. Worked.

At 6.30 went & had Turkish Bath at Jermyn St. Very hot. Too much. Felt faint.

On to Beefsteak. Dined. Saw Watson, Lord Cigarette. Wrote letters. Sketched grate in kitchen. Saw Arthur. Dr Bird like Gill. Wrote letters. Home 1.30pm.

Friday September 23 Worked all day on King of the Belgians. Conrad left Westwood. In evening went in after dinner to Beefsteak. Saw Arthur (Sir George). Answered Inland Revenue officer's letter about armorial bearings. Home 1.30. Agreed to do small block.

Saturday September 24 Did small block in morning. Sultan & Punch. Liver out of order. Caught 11.25 train down to Margate. Late lunch. Miss Vicat Cole at Westwood. Walked with Chicks to Green's cottage for papers after lunch. Went on mare to Ramsgate.

Turned her round. Called Hills. Got snuff box. Mare came along very sharp home along Ramsgate Road. Warmed me up. M seedy. Dinner. Bottle Champagne. Saw fair girl & lover at Victoria & after on sands.

Sunday September 25 Lovely morning. Rode mare round coast. Glass Bass at Broadstairs. Saw Miss Cole. Home 1.30. Lunch. Wrote letters. Great farm fire in evening at St Vincent.

Wednesday September 28 Worked on Tuer's drawing of Tennis Court in morning. Went up by 3.30pm train to London. Changed into Xpress. Called Chapple & Mantells for razor.

Wrote letters at Club. Walked on to Punch Dinner. Row with Arthur about cutting name out of block & putting E.L.S. Home by cab with Guthrie.

Thursday September 29 Came down to Westwood by 10.0am train. Pouring rain & dull. Commenced Britannia & Indian Prince. 1st fire. Miss Vicat Cole at Westwood. Marion's birthday. Worked after dinner on Crocodile & Salisbury.

Friday September 30 At Westwood. Worked hard from early morning. Sent Crocodile & Salisbury off by Jolley & Arthur à Beckett took it up from Ramsgate. Finished 2nd block 6.0pm. Sent Jolley off to Margate with it in rain. Developed 6 plates after dinner.

Saturday October 1 At Westwood. In morning worked all day until 3.30pm on Tuer's drawing of Tennis Court. Put in shadows & trees. After drove Folkestone into Margate.

Called on Stokes. Guthrie came down by Granville. Tried for rabbit with Roy. Dinner. Sleepy after. Singing woke M up.

Sunday October 2 In morning Guthrie & self went for long walk in lovely weather. Past Friends house round coast. Gin & ginger at Captain Digby. Past Davis' cottage. Met Abernethy. Through churchyard & home by road. Girls giggled at knickerbockers. Stokes at Westwood. Good lunch. Drove into Ramsgate with Folkestone. Called F.C.B, Hammonds, Levys, Campbell Clarkes, all out.

Called Banks. Found him in. Back to Westwood. Sent Stokes to Margate in cart. Charlie Burnand & Rosie over. Arranged to shoot tomorrow. Walked along road. Dinner. Long chat.

Monday October 3 Drove at 11.0am to Red Lion at Richborough. Put up. Young sportsmen. Met Burnand (Charlie) in Coopers boat. Shot over marshes. Stopped by yokel gamekeeper. 4 starlings. Roy cold. Lunch at Red Lion. Roy & Guthrie sent on to Sandwich. Roy got Cricket bat. Shot after lunch. Long walk back over flats.

Found them sand after all. Met Levy's carriage. After went to Banks' to dinner.

Changed bad tongue & lobster. Bought nuts & cigars & cigarettes. Walked past Granville & along by Montefiores. Cart met us. Jolley drove home. Dinner at Westwood. Mr & Mrs Whitehead, Mr & Mrs Orchardson, Julian Marshall, Miss Vicat Cole, Anstey Guthrie & Charley Burnand, M & self. Good dinner. Orchardson & Bourbon whiskey. Talk & bed.

Wednesday October 5 In morning finished Tuer's drawing. At 11.10 walked towards Ramsgate with Guthrie. Discussion about horsemanship. Miss Vicat Cole left 11.25. Passed us on road. Cart picked us up at St Lawrence. Drove on to Burnands. Met Frank on walk in front of Sea for 1st time since his illness. Better. Walk Sir Moses Montefiore's. Port wine. Saw Hammond & wife. Drove to Station for book. Back Royal Crescent & home. Jolley jumped at Greens cottage & sprained his leg. After lunch worked at Tuer's drawing. Drove mare to Margate & up with Guthrie to Punch Dinner. Got out St Paul's. Bradbury bad again. Professor & north west passage. Home by cab with Guthrie to Stafford Terrace. Painting finished.

Thursday October 6 In morning up at 7.0am. Saw Maples foreman. Tuer called. So so about drawing. Caught 10.0am train to Westwood. Down & began Tuer's drawing.

Worked all afternoon on it & late after dinner. Very tired. Nellie Keith came down by Granville. Dinner. Quiet. Worked on Tuer & Octopus on paper.

Friday October 7 Up at 6.0am. Worked & sent drawing off by 10.15 Margate (Tuer & Octopus).

After bother about shoeing horses etc. Tassell rode mare to 1 st meet of Harriers. Got on Folkestone after. Very bad on his legs. Caught hounds at 1.0pm at Sea Mark. Left with Tassell at 2.15. Very hot in sun. Saw M & Chicks etc. Conny Burnand & Mr (blank) called. Got gun & tried to get starlings etc at Nash. No rabbit etc. Dinner & bed.

Saturday October 8 In morning put things in order etc etc. Almanack dinner. Drove mare in brougham round bad roads. Met Parrish. Went up from Ramsgate by 3.50pm.

Got out St Paul's. Dinner. Bradbury bad again. Home to Stafford Terrace with Guthrie.

Tuesday October 11 In morning Nelly Keith, Maud, Roy & M & self went to meet at Perkins's, Haine. Very cold. Found hare. Splendid run. Round to St Peters etc. All field came to Westwood to lunch & Champagne. Out again. Another hare. Good run. Home. Took gun & tried for rabbits. Rode Folkestone. Drove to Westgate. Very cold. Orchardsons to dinner. Mr & Mrs Cotton, Cap'n & Mrs Halfield, Nellie, M & self, Julian Marshall & O's. Too much Champagne & whiskey. Home by 11.0pm. Nearly run into by drunken furious dog cart going to Westgate.

Wednesday October 12 Caught 10.10am train from Margate. Up to town. Took glass & cupboard with me. On to Stafford Terrace. Drove to Club. Lunched there. Lobster & ½ bottle Graves. After called on Maples & Edwards & Roberts. On to the Grosvenor Gallery. Russian pictures. After Garrick Club. Furniss & self walked to P.D. Bradbury in old form. Joke on Guthrie. Sharp frost. Horse slipped. Home to Stafford Terrace. Very cold.

Thursday October 13 In morning photod self for French cut. Mervyn came & helped me. Lunch at home. Dull cold dark miserable day. Had fur coat out. Did not know it had been ruined with moth. In evening dined with Seasons Club. Weldon, Seton, Walters, Martineau, Warre, Bangs, Sterry, Furniss, Elliott, Sambourne, Jones, Wingfield present. Long useless discussion. Cold. Fur coat. Came up in coat.

Home down Piccadilly with Furniss. Roared with laughter F & self. Fire in room.

Friday October 14 In morning got up at 7.0am. Worked all day until late on France & General Cafforel. Wires from Arthur about 2nd block. Dined at 10.45 by self.

Champagne. Fire. Fearfully cold. Doultons took instructions for stove. Maples painted mantelpiece. Bed at 11.30pm very tired.

Saturday October 15 Up at 7.0am. Got to work on finishing ½ block Unemployed. Block done Feby 1876. (1876 crossed out, 1886 substituted. Nov 11 '95) Arthur à Beckett called. Block finished at 11.30. Put room in order etc etc. At 1.30 drove to Club. Saw Jones, Corney Grain, Bancroft, Grossmith etc etc. Lunch.

Haddock, sausages. Fur coat with moth in it. Caught Granville. Same carriage as C.Burnand & Frank B. Cold came on. Bought Alkaram at Ray's. Drove to Westwood. After in pouring rain to Ramsgate. Saw F.C.B. Got Alan Quartermaine. Back. Dinner. Bed.

Lunch. After at 2.45 rode round coast on mare. Struck sea at Lifeboat station.

Telegraph wire borne down with C weed. Met lots of roughs. Ramsgate.

Letters. Home by Dumpton. Music. Saw extraordinary flight of rooks etc from France on coast. This was noticed in the papers afterwards as for Saty.

Monday October 17 Good bright morning. Rode mare at 10.0 to hounds 1st time. Went well. Meet Sarre. Doubtful to go. Went. Hurdle. Parson. (small sketch) Talk with Loibel.

Pottered about. At 11.0pm found hare. Fast run. Mare in lather. Jumped. Left 1.45. Sarre. Off horse. Beer & biscuit. Jogged along through Ramsgate.

Called Burnands & also Hammonds. Saw Lady Rose. Home. Chicks soap bubbles. Read Times.

Tuesday October 18 Westwood. Wrote letters etc. At 11.30am Marion & self rode for 1 st time since 1884. M pleased with Folkestone. Round Margate etc. Met Parish's etc.

Walked up to Club & on to Punch Dinner with Furniss. Talk of World's criticism on F. Punch Dinner. Frank Burnand's 1st dinner after illness. No Bradbury. Home with Guthrie. Hard frost.

Thursday October 20 Stafford Terrace. Got up at 7.30am to the subject of Don Quixote & Sancho Panza early. At 2.30 drove British H. Cousin. After walked as far as Apsley House. 1/s to tramp family. Home. Worked. At 7.30 went to dine with Mother 5 Gloucester Walk. Mervyn, Faith Clark & Pilleau there. Good dinner & wine.

'I'm the Gnome King' sermon by Pilleau. After Pilleau came to Stafford Terrace. Went in. Left 1.0am. Bed. Saw Mr Cooze of Maples at 1.0pm.

Friday October 21 Hounds at Herne St. Stafford Terrace. Up at 7.0am & worked & finished Sancho Panza & Don Quixote. At 1.0 lunched. 2.0pm at British H. Photos.

Conny & Cuthbert & Ethel Burnand at Westwood. Photod. Drove to Abernethy's. Saw him. Egyptian photos. Promised to lend. Back to Westwood. Drove Conny & Chicks back to Ramsgate. Called fishmongers & Hills. Got tan brown. Home past Dumpton. Drove mare. Very tired after dinner. Sleep.

Sunday October 23 Westwood. Very cold in morning. At 10.30 rode mare round coast. Maud in bed. Lovely sunshine. At Ramsgate past Granville & home by 1.0pm. Lunch.

Wrote letters. At 4.15 drove Folkestone to Ramsgate with Roy. Called Levy's, Hammonds & F.C.B. Talk of gorilla. Little Tassells singing. Roy went with me.

Monday October 24 Westwood. Hounds at Mount Pleasant. Up at 8.30am. Bitterly cold, north west gale. At 10.20 started on Folkestone to meet at Mount Pleasant.

Dreadfully cold. Collard not hunting, Capt'n Cotton instead. Nearly left haystack after hounds found hare. Good run, killed in the open near Quex.

Left hounds at 12.20pm. Rode home through Garlinge & Dent de Lion. Heard of Mrs Swain's death, Margate. Bought News & Telegraph. Gale blowing.

Home to Westwood. Lunch. Chicks gone to Burnands. M home to lunch.

Tuesday October 25 Westwood. Most lovely morning. Wrote letters. After worked on Calendar.

Wednesday October 26 In morning drove to Margate with Polly & Roy. Roy's ears cold. Very cold.

Caught the 10.0am train. Seedy. Warner in carriage & Captain Hatfield. Up to town. Drove to Kensington. Cold. Found things still unfinished. On point of wiring Maples when Mr Cooze called. Settled stove. At 3.30pm called on Mother at 6 Gloster Walk. After on Sir Edward Sullivan. After walked up to British Hotel. At 6.0 at Maples settled stove etc. Walked through Chancery Lane to Punch Dinner. Called at Attenborough & looked at watch. Chaff about my forgetting Milliken last week. Called at Beefsteak. Wrote Blunt. Guthrie & self drove home from Beefsteak. Enough Whiskey.

Thursday October 27 Seedy in morning. Worked on Bartlett & Gorilla Baby. Sent Emma for Stace.

Very wet. Wired for Polly to come up. Stace turned up at 11.15 & went away & brought at 2.0pm labourer. 3/6 & shake of hands. Developed plates. At 7.30 went to dine at Mother's, 6 Gloster Walk. Miss Walford & Billie there. No wire from M. Waited. Good dinner. Hard cork for Champagne. After drove down to Olympia. Met Furniss, Arthur & Milliken. Walked home. Whiskey & sleep at 1.0pm.

Polly came at 12.45. On to her mother's. Worked hard all day & finished 10.0pm. Polly in at dinner time. Fireplace tiled in bedroom. Character plasterer. M came in at dinner time 10.30. Bed after. Fire in room.

Saturday October 29 Stafford Terrace & Westwood. Up 8.0am. Caught 10.0am Victoria. Stupid porter. Hass of a guard. Down in smoking carriage, M in ordinary 1st class carriage. Roy met us with cart & mare. Purchases at Margate. Sent luggage on. On to Westwood. Lunch. Letters. After drove into Margate again to fetch Arthur Blunt by Granville. Stopped for shopping etc. Met Blunt. Saw F.C.B in train. Complained of late block. On home, Arthur nervous. Banks & wife dined with us. Sleepy after dinner. Story of Beetle's sister's funeral.

Sunday October 30 Westwood. Lovely morning. Arthur Blunt, Roy & self went for walk past Friends round by Captain Digby to Broadstairs. Met Mervyn & Marion. Roy's 1st walk with me. Tired. Walked towards Westwood. Carriage met us at Whitehead's. Mare stumbled. Lunch. Letters. In afternoon had dog cart & drove by St Lawrence (Arthur very nervous) to Florence Cottage & called on Miss Levy. Hot room. After went on to Burnands. Sent cart back. Talk with F.C.B & after walked home by high road to Westwood. Arthur looked into chapel & home. Dinner. Mervyn, Arthur & selves. Sleepy after very while Arthur played. Whiskey, pipes & bed at 12.0 midnight.

Monday October 31 Westwood. Hounds at Hengrove. In morning fly came & took Blunt & Mervyn, children & M, to meet at Hengrove. Lovely day. Pretty girl out with Mayhew.

Girl off horse in field. Difficulty with Folkestone jumping. Met Green. Home by 1.0pm. Arthur & Mervyn came in directly after. Worked on calendar. Shooting after at tennis balls & birds. Walked with Arthur Blunt to Ramsgate as far as St Lawrence. Dined at Hammonds, Burnands there. Good dinner. Liver wrong. Sleepy. Walked on road home again as far as Mill (Maskalls). Met singing girl. Lovely moon. Blunt had 4 goes of whiskey after.

Tuesday November 1 Westwood. Arthur Blunt & Mervyn went up by 12.10 train. Worked all day hard on Calendar. Quiet dinner. Bed 10.30.

Wednesday November 2 Westwood. In morning up & M drove Roy & self to catch train. Poured with rain. Got wet. Went up with Abernethy & Quartermain East. Home to Stafford Terrace. Nothing done. Room in disorder. Upset. Cooze came after. Worked on Calendar. At 4.0 took cab & called British Hotel. After walked on to Club.

Wrote letters. Cab on to Punch Dinner. No Bradbury. Good dinner. Keene there. Home with Guthrie to Stafford Terrace.

Played 2 games of Billiards. Home at 12.15am. Emma helped me to photo self in afternoon for Lord Lytton. Not a success.

Friday November 4 Stafford Terrace. Up early. Worked again on Calendar. Mervyn came in at 11.30. Photod him for Lord Lytton & self for Aquarius. Worked in afternoon.

Did Lord Lytton as Ambassador. Finished 9.15pm. Afterwards tidied up room & bed at 12.30am.

Saturday November 5 Stafford Terrace. Up 9.0am, very tired. Bother about blocks. Did Shrimp & Patient. After put room in order & left at 1pm for Garrick. Spoke to Wolmann about her husband. At Club lunched with Jones, Grain, Chitty, Grossmith & the Beetle. After talk with Jones caught Granville. Went down with F.C.B & Charley B. Tommy à Beckett & Roy in dog cart with mare. Drove home to Westwood. Fireworks. Let some off. Quiet evening. Bed. Sunday November 6 Westwood. Most lovely morning. At 7.0am woke up & got to work on Calendar. Put in Aquarius, Libra etc etc. At 12.0 noon knocked off. Just going for ride Evans came up. Delayed. Whiskey & Apolinaris etc. Walk round.

Lunch. Photo. At 3.25 rode round through St Peter's to Joss Gap. (Pretty girl very). Along through Broadstairs, past Granville & on by Burnands. Posted letters. Home. Tea. To work again. Pottered after dinner (M & self). Worked till 11.0pm. Tired. Bed. Monday November 7 Westwood. Hounds met at St Nicholas. Dull morning. Up at 7.30 & at work on finishing Calendar. Worked all day & got it off by 4.15, Margate train. M, Tommy à Beckett & Roy went. Got fireworks ready & wrote letters. After had display of fireworks. Children from village. Tassell. Fire balloon etc. Great success. Dinner. Quiet restful evening.

Tuesday November 8 Westwood. In morning lovely morning. Rode mare. Very fresh. Excited at train. Went thro' Margate & along sands to Broadstairs. After home through Upton. Fire at Vale View. Crum went. Back to Westwood. Worked till lunch, 'Times' after. After began 4 drawings, 3 for Almanack. After that dinner & quiet evening. Tommy went back with M in brougham. Annoying letter forwarded from London from F.C.B. Bothered. Wrote Ramsgate.

Wednesday November 9 Westwood. Up at 7.15am. Put things together. Jolley made 2 journeys to Margate with Folkestone. Very wet. M drove me in to Margate. Tassell went up. Minnie met me at Victoria. Sent things on. Afterwards took cab to 85 Fleet

Afterwards Guthrie & self went to Lawrence Bradbury's rooms in Temple. Cup of tea. Wet coats. Afterwards walked with Guthrie to Brucciani's. Selected Hermes etc etc. Punch Dinner. F.C.B all right. Home with Guthrie.

Thursday November 10 Stafford Terrace. Dull foggy wretched morning. Jack Burnand called with letter from Frank. Subject Chamberlain. Sent for things to Cording. Photod self & Billie for Chamberlain. Afterwards worked. Went up to Mother's to dine at 6 Gloster Walk. Miss Walford & Stokes there. Quiet dinner. Liver wrong.

Friday November 11 Stafford Terrace. Worked all day from early morn till 8.15pm on Chamberlain as Fisherman. Also interrupted by man putting fender down from Maples.

After took cab & went on to Constitutional Club & met Stokes. He had dined so went to Beefsteak. Sat next Ward (Leslie). Room full. Claret corked.

Dined. Tired after very. Went home by cab. Very cold. Spencer was at Garrick with Col Anthony Jones.

Saturday November 12 Stafford Terrace. In morning tidied up etc. Men at work from Maples on polishing etc etc. After photod sleeping figure. Went to Club. Lunched. Called at Hawes & exchanged watch. Went to Charing X. Met Polly & Chicks. 2 omnibuses. Home. Worked on Almanack. Quiet dinner. Bed. Sunday November 13 1st Sunday at Stafford Terrace. At 10.0am went to meet Furniss on his new tit-up. Furniss 10 minutes late. Met all sorts & conditions of men on the road.

Jumped mare. Showed Furniss watch. After rode by Hendon etc. Home past the mothers. Saw Spencer & Mervyn. Home with game. Spencer in to lunch.

Very tired. Arranged to walk up to Club. Called & asked at Bristol Hotel. Mob row with police in Trafalgar Square. Dined with Spencer next General. Saw Pelligrini. 2 Hollands & Soda & home. Sleepy in cab.

Monday November 14 Up in morning & rode Folkestone in Row. Saw Coward etc etc. Home. Did photos of self for Almanack etc. Lovely sunny morning. Worked all day on the 1st Qr of Almanack. Quiet dinner at home. Spencer dined. Sleepy after dinner.

Bottle of Geisler '74. Sherry etc, Hollands.

Tuesday November 15 Stafford Terrace. In morning rode the mare round Park. Boots tight. Mare fresh. Home. Letters. Work at 12.0. Got on with 1 st Quarter of Almanack.

Dined quietly at home. Very tired. Bed early. In afternoon sent Lady Wiseman's book back by carriage.

Thursday November 17 Beastly fog all day. Not well in morning. Worked hard all day on 1 st Qr of Almanack. Finished it at 5.0pm. Began the 2 nd at 6.0pm. Quiet dinner.

Worked after dinner etc. Bed at 11.30. Special Constables called out for riots, 3500 sworn in. (Cutting glued in: Death of Richard Lane.)

Friday November 18 Stafford Terrace. About as beastly a day as they make em. Wet & fog.

Sunday November 20 In morning at 10.0am went for ride on mare. Past Fulham & American Ex'n.

Up Wimbledon, over Common etc. Good enjoyable canter through Lady's Mile. Trotting pony at Sheen. Fast along home road. Over Hammersmith Bridge. Home. Lunch. Baker called with Mona. Worked on 2 nd Qr Almanack.

Guthrie & Spencer dined, 2 bottles of Champagne. Finished 2 nd Qr of Almanack.

Monday November 21 Wrote letters in the morning. Worked hard on Almanack. Quiet dinner. Began 3rd Qr. Tuesday November 22 Worked on 3rd Qr. At 2.0pm rode over Hammersmith Bridge & through Richmond Park. Short way. Home 4.0pm. Worked on 3 rd Qr. Quiet dinner & at work late. Van derWeyde sent photos of Bride.

Wednesday November 23 rd Worked on Almanack 3 Qr all day. Finished it 4.30pm. Walked part of the way to Punch Dinner. Cab from Apsley House. Home with Guthrie by cab.

Prof went to sleep. Bradbury there.

Thursday November 24 Began 4th Qr Almanack. Worked all day & very late after dinner. Did not go out.

Bad bilious headache. At 10.30 drove in carriage to City. Called Pearce's, also Gammage about water. Drove into Cornhill. Back. Called Bouverie St. Club. After lunch - Grossmith, Beerbohm Tree, Comyns Carr - cab to Olympia. Called here. Bought bit, also case of instruments. Called Denudain.

Chicks & servants at Olympia. Home. Dinner. Mrs Marcus Stone came in.

Drove to Haymarket. 'Red Lamp'. Saw Mrs Stone home. Bed. Sunday November 27 Wet morning. Went for delightful ride. Called Barkers at Wimbledon. Glass of beer. Saw Fanny. Good canter across Common etc. Through Richmond & home. 1st view of Jolley's kitten. Lunch. Toys & children. Undid all Cremer's toys. Percy & Spencer called. Percy's new hansom. Met Orton in morning.

Quiet dinner & bed early.

Monday November 28 Pouring wet morning. Afterwards photod Cremers toys etc etc. Crackers etc.

Tuesday November 29 This day Reffell left. Photod children for Bird cut. In evening walked as far as Junior United Service Club. Dined with Spencer & met Hornek & Mackintosh.

Got piece of glass in my mouth. After met Jones & went on to Garrick.

Tousled cheese. Put Spencer's name down for it & drove home in Hansom.

Wednesday November 30 Seedy in morning, headache. Worked on Children & Crackers cut. Walked to Punch Dinner. Took very little wine. Guthrie & self left earlier & home by 11.30. Sat up & read till 12.0. M went to Scotch Festival at Hall.

Thursday December 1 Worked all day on Children's Cracker cut. Finished on paper at 8.0pm. Dined quietly at home. 1st success in getting Swain to photograph on wood on Thursday.

Friday December 2 In morning did small cut Darwinian Ancestor. Afterwards rode mare over Wimbledon Common (Shooting). Mare awfully fresh. Home. Did 2 nd cut of Pig & Shakespeare. Afterwards went to see 'Bells of Haslemere'. Barkers & Miss Jocelyn in dress circle. Fanny came into box. Drove home quietly. Fire in room.

Home by good cab. Good cab going. Bed 12.0am.

Sunday December 4 At 11.0am got on mare & rode through Richmond Park & over Wimbledon Common (stone in foot) to Barkers. Oak House, Wimbledon Park. Mr Coghlan, Miss Jocelyn. After usual lunch Spencer drove down in Badminton turn-out. Red wheels. Rode home. Missed Spencer after. Young Flower at Stafford Terr. Went to sleep for 2 hours. Tired. Quiet simple dinner & bed.

Monday December 5 In morning early rode Folkestone. Fresh. Went along Picadilly & up as far as the Badminton Club. Home through Kensington. In morning photod another man from Nash's & got things ready for Pearce's drawing. Quiet dinner & evening.

Tuesday December 6 In morning rode after breakfast. Met Bartlett & French. Home 110am. Put room in order & pictures up in afternoon etc. After dined at Mrs Watney's.

Claude & Vernon. After went to Logia 25, Albert Hall. Heard Patti, Southey etc. Saw Mrs Livesay. Mr Coghlan & Mrs Barker & Miss Jocelyn just under our nose. Bother to get carriage & home. Hamilton & Ada F arrived at 5.30pm.

Wednesday December 7 Dull morning. Hamilton Fletcher went off at 10.0am on his law business. After put room in order & worked on drawing for Pearce's. After at 4.30pm dressed.

Called at Pearsons Notting Hill about stove. Walked along Oxford St & down Chancery Lane to Punch Dinner. Arrived 7.20. Late. Agnew there. Almanack's health. No Almanack produced at dinner. Guthrie & self left at 9.40. Went to Lyceum in time to see the 'Perdita' scene. Mervyn, Tabs, M & self & Guthrie.

Saw Abbey after. M & Ada drove home in 4 wheeler. Guthrie came in. Smoke & talk till 1.0pm. Roy in our room. Paper & bed.

Thursday December 8 Tabby at Stafford Terrace. Pouring wet day. Began Children & Xmas Tree.

Tabs went off about her dress. M out in carriage. Letter from F.C.B countermanding Xmas Tree. Afterwards worked & did Lord Clanricarde as Shylock. Afterwards walked up to Club & dined with Spencer at Junior United.

Late for dinner. Met Eykyn, Plaskett, Percy, Delmar, Humphrey, self, Jessell, Stone, Spencer. Good dinner. Pool & Billiards. Home with Marcus Stone in cab at 1.30am. M & Tabs went to see 'Arabian Nights'.

Mother had a bad cold. Chicks went to Cremers. Worked hard all day. No ride. Jolley's cold bad. Not well inside.

Friday December 16 Not well inside. Very mild weather, 64º without a fire. Tidied up room. Put photos away etc. Wrote letters etc etc. Doubtful about Asprey. Waited for wire. Sent mare off to Evesham. In afternoon at 4.45 left Paddington for Evesham. Surly Yankee man in train. Talk with fellow passengers. Fly met me at Evesham, 1hr drive. Got to Russell House, Broadway. Met by Millett & Abbey & Harold Roller. Dined at 9.15. Good dinner. Gas electric. Studio after.

Woke up seedy in night & bad.

Saturday December 17 At Broadway. Up at 8.30. Very weak & seedy. Breakfast. Had Yankee cholera mixture. Mare brought round. Mounted. Millett, Roller & self went to meet at Hinchfield. Rushout master North Cotswold. Found fox at once. Stone walls.

Sunday December 18 At Broadway. Up & walked up village before breakfast. Dull wet day. Up in morning. Still seedy inside. Read 'Story of the Secret Chamber'. Baseball game. Lunch. Walked up to see mare. Studio. Naval officer came in. After went drive (I was late) to Rev G.D.Bourne at Weston sub Edge. Harold Roller, Abbey, Millett & self. Tall Cassowary, Miss Penn, daughter & good Winter girl.

Corked port. More after. Good dinner. Sleepy. Friend of Jas Aikers. Home at 11.15pm.

Monday December 19 At Broadway. (illeg) (illeg) wired to come up in morning. Felt better for 1st time.

Hard frost. Rode mare with Harold Roller to Lord Elcho's place through Stanton. Snow. Mare fresh. Roller jumped his horse. Home. Cherry brandy.

Lunch with Abbey. Caught 2.45 train from Evesham. G.W.R. Carriage met me at Paddington. Home. Dear Roy ill. Wrote letters downstairs. Quiet evening & bed.

Tuesday December 20 In morning up & worked rather uphill on Punch, Toby & 4 Seasons. Worked after dinner. Dear Roy ill in bed.

Wednesday December 21 Worked all day on Toby, Punch & 4 Seasons. After put fur coat on & walked to Knightsbridge. Cab on to Punch Dinner. Tenniel complimented me on drawing of Welsh Girl & Gladstone. No cartoon to make up. Good Dinner.

Very cold. Cab home by 12.30. Cold came on. Dear Roy taken ill with croup.

Called Orton in. Left him with him.

Thursday December 22 Roy better. In morning at 10.30am rode mare round Wimbledon. Jumped her over fence. Met French. Home through Richmond Park. Hard gallop. Wrote letters all the afternoon. Dined. In evening went to 1st night of Wilson Barrett's 'Golden Ladder'. Saw Watson etc etc. Long dreary piece. Called Beefsteak.

Sebright. Met Spalding. Home by cab. Cold came on.

Friday December 23 In morning up at 9.15. Put room in order & got drawer ready for photos etc.

Conny called. Roy still seedy in bed. At 2.0pm rode mare (sluggish) over Wimbledon Common. Saw house to let. Called Barkers. Home by house again. Glass of Old & Bitter. Along Hammersmith Road home. Wrote letters, looked over Pearks account. Talked to Roy in bed. Quiet dinner. Rest after.

Bed early. Had hot grog for cold.

Saturday December 24 In morning at 10.45 rode Folkestone through Park & Marble Arch intending to go north. Turned back because of cold. Home. Changed things. Tapped sherry cask. Walked on to Club, caught up dear Maud. Xmas Tree. Lunched.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 Boiled beef & mince pie. Merrivale & Eastbourne. Wrote lots of letters. At 4.45 M fetched me in brougham. After called at Langleys. Brandy, soda. Rain. M had cab for box. Bought grapes & oranges at Butts. Home. Roy better.

Dinner. Bottle of Lanson. Read 'Times'.etc. Bed 10.45. Tapped sherry.

Sunday December 25 Very cold in morning. Got on mare at 9.30am. Nearly turned back. Met young Chesterton. Rode on to Wimbledon. Girl & two galloping cads. Round Richmond & home. Met Dr & Mrs Parr etc. Lunch, goose etc. Roy still upstairs. Found mistake about Pearks acct. Langleys, Guthrie & Hensman called. Chicks & toys etc. Roy's cake cut. Very cold. To dinner at the Boehms.

Drove on after in carriage & dined at Boehms. Con, Eff, selves (& Langley after dinner only.) Game of Billiards. Shell out. Talk of watch & home. Good evening. Felt well.

Monday December 26 Put India Rubber on printing frame etc etc. Also labels for drawers. Photod Xmas tree. Did not ride. In afternoon walked up to Club & dined by self. Went to Pantomome of 'Puss in Boots' after. Looked in at Garrick. Weldon & Gillie & home.

Tuesday December 27 Did not ride. Stace put room in order etc. Mona Kemp & Mother called. Maud ill. Emma went for holiday & caught cold. Walked up to Club & back. Had tea & wrote letters.

Wednesday December 28 Did not ride. Edgar Boehm called with Marion. Punch Dinner. Bradbury back in old form again. Very bad. Had Queen & Pope to do. Drove home by self.

Thursday December 29 Fine morning. Photod my mother for Queen & Pope. Also Jolley for Pope.

Chicks better. Mrs Stone came in to dinner & stayed late keeping M up.

Friday December 30 Worked hard all day on Queen & Pope. Finished at 9.0pm. Quiet dinner.

Emma ill. Roy still upstairs.

Saturday December 31 Very cold. Put things in order. Walked up to & lunched at Garrick. M called in carriage & after called at Covent Garden Theatre for box. On to Old Masters & Grosvenor & home. After quiet dinner drove to Covent Garden Theatre & saw Pantomime, 'Jack & the Beanstalk'. Good business. French change actor. Home by cab. In morning room. Watched watch change.
