Saturday January 1 Very cold in morning. Hard frost. Called in to see horses. M & self walked up to top of Row. Cab to St James's Restaurant. Chop & sausages. After to Royal Academy Old Masters. Saw Lady Wentworth, Taylors, Maxwells, Arthur Burnand, Stranger etc. Took M to her mother's. After to Club. Saw Jones, Merivale etc. Wrote letters. Walk home, sent M & Judy by cab. Row about horse etc etc. Dined at home. Read 'She'. Bed. Sunday January 2 Bitterly cold. Hoar frost. At 12.0 started for Barn Elms to skate. Did skate. 2 girls & 2 men on. Robin fed out of hand in Summer House. Walked home. Mother there. Read Rider Haggard's 'She'. Bed after. Did not work. Monday January 3 This day I worked on drawing for Augustus Harris. Invitation for the Baddeley night. Sent it off at 7.0pm. Quiet dinner & bed early.

Walked after & called on Mother at Bath. Very slippery. Worked on Mr Coren's book after. Bed early. Bottle of Ayala New Wine Impl pint. Wednesday January 5 Bright morning & thaw. Carriage out went to Mother's at Bath with Polly. Worked all day on Coren's drawing, did not quite finish it. Walked as far as Ogden & Cookes. Blew him up. Afterwards cab to Punch Dinner. Anstey Guthries first dinner. Good company. Left. Home with Guthrie in cab. Tattersall's dinner, did not go. Thursday January 6 Hard frost again. Roy not quite the thing. Maud to go to Messels. Roy at home. Finished Coren's drawing. Began Goschen as Hound. F.C.B wrote to ask me to dine at Steak. Walked up to Steak. Looked at shop, Knightsbridge. M's cab passed me. Charles Allen & F.C.B at Club only. Dined quietly. After to see The Churchwarden at Olympia with F.C.B. Good. Back to Garrick. Wire from Arthur. Wrote letters. Read Huguenots. Went to the Baddeley Cake cutting. Broadly offensive. Saw Chaplin, Sir J.Gorst etc etc. Somers Vine, Whiteley, Currie, etc. Friday January 7 Very cold & raw. Worked on Goschen as Hound all day. Finished nine pm. Bed 11.30. Saturday January 8 Cold. Wrote letters. Went for walk at 12.0 noon. Saw Furniss & Finlay. After called Ogden & Cooke & also at Bath Hotel. Waited ¾ hour for Marion & Roy. After cab came up with M & Roy. Went to St James's Restaurant. Roy & sausages. Girls next table. On to Covent Garden Circus. Home in 4 wheeler. Quiet dinner. Read Arabian Nights. Bed 11.30pm. Sunday January 9 Up 10.0am. At 10.30 rode mare to meet Furniss. Wretched cold raw snowy morning. Rode along wood. Met Furniss. Rode past railways. Mare fresh. Turned back on Finchley Road. Home to lunch. Altered trees all afternoon. After read. Wycliffe Taylor called & stayed to dinner. Bed 11.15pm. Monday January 10 Very cold morning. Wrote letters. Printed a lot of back photos. M & Mother went shopping. After worked on Mr Coren's block. After dined at 6.15. Tenniel came & went to Hippodrome. Rather giddy in head. Mare slipped. Frost. Roads bad. Home. Hot grog. Supper. Bed 12.0am. Tuesday January 11 Very wet morning. Man did gas. Wretched morning. Walked to Club to Lunch. Back. Miss Wright called. Quiet dinner at home. Called Cutler & Reed about coat.

Home by cab. Called at Garrick. Had Welsh Rabbit. Home 2.0am. Thursday January 13 Seedy in morning. In morning waited for letter from F.C.B. Came. Copied it out. Prince of Wales & John Bull. Walked on to Club. Saw F.C.B, also Hollingshead. Wrote letters. Walked home. Got to work. Drew picture & worked in cold till 1.0am. Drew John Bull. Alice Liddell at 18 Staff Terr. Friday January 14 In morning up early. Photod self in dull grey day for Prince of Wales & John Bull. Worked hard all day & got done in time to go to dine at Mrs Geigers. Met her mother & stepfather. Also her sister. Bachelors Hickson, Casella etc. Cold. Jolley drove queerly. Home 11.15pm. Read Napoleon. Saturday January 15 Up at 10.0am. After walked M as far as Marion Pollock's. Snow. On to Cutler & Reeds. After to Farmer & Rogers Indian Warehouse. On to White's in Bow Street. After Club lunch. Chicken & ham. After walked home. Chicks. Went to Rider Haggards. Mare fresh. Met Pollocks. Pretty girl. Anstey Guthrie. Home.11.0. Schnaps. Mare very fresh home. Bed. Sunday January 16 Very cold in morning. Snow. Walked out wth Roy & M. Skating on Round Pond & Long Water. Looked in at stables. Foot called. After skemed helmet. After Banks came to dinner & also Tristram Ellis. Good dinner. Nelly was to have dined but could not on acct of cold. Monday January 17 Severe frost. Turner put new sash in window. Mother went to Mrs Carter's after. Casts came of Minerva & Bull. Fine sunny morning. Gas man here. In evening dined at Walter Austin's. Walked. Missed carriage. Met Shakespeare, Mr & Mrs Warre, Burnands etc etc. (Pencil note: Shakespeare & Lord Randolph Churchill anecdote. Who's the Young Politician.) Home 11.15. Snow & thaw set in at 10.0am. Tuesday January 18 Thaw. Walked to British Museum in afternoon. Walked right into dense black fog. Could not see what I wanted. After on to Whites & on to Club & walked home. Worked on Coren's drawing. Children at Donaldsons. Just missed them. Quiet dinner at home. Wednesday January 19 In morning worked on Coren's drawing. Finished it. After walked to Punch Dinner. Put scales on armour. Good dinner. Home with Anstey in cab. No fare to pay. Called for letter. Could not get it.

Things sent from Gurney Wren & Lincoln Bennett. Little à Becketts came in cab & were sent away. Mistake. Photod them. Began drawing. After walked to H. Peto's dinner. Met Abbey, Fildes, Gilbert, etc, 2 Hasses. Lovely home. Very tired. Friday January 21 Nordenfelt dance. Did not go. Worked hard all day on Churchill & School. Tired in evening. M not so well. Saturday January 22 In morning rode for 1st time since (blank). Jolley rode mare. Not much on a horse. Afterwards lunch. Went up to see Roy. Put scales on armour. Dined at 6.15 & went to 1st night of the Gilbert & Sullivan new opera Ruddigore. Brilliant house. Sat next Jew Gouche. Ld Mayor. Supper Garrick. Arthur à Beckett. Home 2.0am. Very tired.

Sunday January 23 Very dull morning. Felt tired. Wired Furniss. At 10.50 rode with Furniss & Spencer round Wimbledon & Richmond. Home to lunch. Roy's foot bad. After developed Arthur's photographs. Read Gibbon's Rise & Fall Roman Empire. Weldon called. Put scales on armour. Dinner. Bed 11.0pm. Marion not well. Roy's foot bad. Monday January 24 Dull cold morning very. Rode in Row, Folkestone. Saw Finlay. After worked on Coren's drawing. Roy's foot bad. Dined quietly at home. Oakes wrote for hunters. Tuesday January 25 In morning played Tennis with Tuer etc. Home. Photod self in Spanish cloak. Maud did it. After worked Coren drawing. Spencer came in to dinner. Roy & M went for drive toWimbledon. Quiet evening. Roy's foot bad with boil. Wednesday January 26 Most lovely morning. Printed photos of self in Canon Harford's Spanish cloak. Worked & wrote letters. After rode Folkestone in the Row. Beautiful order & capital ride. Saw Finlay, Alexander & Mrs De la Rue. Home. Groom's horse reared. Worked on Mr Coren's tailpiece. Greek piece. At 5.30 walked to Punch Dinner. Called Cutler & Reeds & on Whites. Good dinner. No Lucy. Poor little Lucy. Home with Guthrie. Steady cab. Fog. Thursday January 27 Very heavy fog in morning. Could not ride. Very dark & dull. Gas. Finished the Greek tail piece. Quiet evening & bed. M still seedy. Dr Langston called.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 Friday January 28 Waited until 12.30 for subject. Percy Oakes called at breakfast time on his new tit-upping hoss. After worked on John Bull & Smith all day. Finished 9.45. Champagne. Bed after 11.30pm. Saturday January 29 In morning up & tidied things etc. At 12.15 rode Folkestone. Went through Row & on to Victoria afterwards. Rode with Heathorne & Finlay. Home, changed, went with M to Westwood. Carriage full. Stopped at Margate. Bought leather & beeswax. Walked to Westwood. Quiet dinner & bed. Sunday January 30 At Westwood. Went for walk along the sea shore & on to Margate. Had sherry & bitters at White Hart. After cart picked me up with Betsy Thornton. Westwood dinner 2.15pm. Minnie ill. Worked on Aegis after. Bed 11.30pm. Monday January 31 At Westwood. Dull & strong wind. Drove with Mervyn at 10.30 to meet at Sarre, Miss Chard's. Came across hounds. Mervyn & smoke. Drove home. Cold. Did Aegis. Leather lining. Minnie Tilley ill, very. Quiet dinner & evening. News from Compton about Mervyn. Tuesday February 1 At Westwood. Came up with Mervyn by Granville. Very heavy wet in London. After cab to Stafford Terrace. Found dear Maud very ill with her throat. Saw her. Worked on Coren's drawing after. Mervyn called about theatricals etc. Walked to Punch Dinner. Called on Cutler & Reed. Whites shut up again. Punch Dinner. Late. No oysters. Came home with Anstey Guthrie. Found Maud awake. Got grapes. Wednesday February 2 Bright morning. Colder. Dear Maud still very ill. Went up to her room. Worked on Tournament. Orton came about Maudie. After went to see Maud. Called at Herbert & Jones for jelly. On to the Garrick. Paid subscription. Dined with Milliken & after went on to the Avenue Theatre. Home with Guthrie. Thursday February 3 Maud still ill. Orton called. Wired for M to come home. Wire from M saying coming. Worked on Coren's drawing. M home at 3.0pm. Roy went in carriage to meet her. Began drawing for Automatons. Quiet dinner. Very tired. Sleepy. Bed. Orton fetched at 12.0pm. Maud very ill & in pain. Friday February 4 Rode before breakfast. Maud still very ill. Mother at lunch etc. Hard pressed for work & terribly worrying day. Altered subject & after did single figure. Dinner 10.0pm. Orton in. Smoked pipe. Saturday February 5 Maud still ill. Decided to call Dr G.West in. Rode at 10.15 with Bartlett & his son, 1st time since December 11th. Lovely warm morning. Home 1.05pm. Dr

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 West came at 2.30pm consultations about Maudie. Better news. Geraldine sat with her. After quiet dinner bed 12.0. Worked after dinner on Coren's drawing. Orton smoked pipe from 11.0 till 12.30. Sunday February 6 Much colder. Rode the mare for first time since December 12, 1886. (This does not count short ride Jany 9th.) 8 weeks. Uncomfortable ride. Breeches hurt me etc. Mare awkward with trains very. Home 2.0pm. Solitary lunch. Slept. Maud about same though better night. Roy not well. Sat with Maud. Monday February 7 Cold east wind set in. Dear Roy better. Maud still seriously ill. Worked on Tournament drawing, Coren. Tuesday February 8 Cold, very, & frost. Maud still very ill. Finished tournament drawing for Coren, nearly. After drove with M to Harold Powers. Dined. Pleasant evening. Photo machine etc etc. Home 11.45pm. Wednesday February 9 Cold cold east wind. Worked on Mr Coren's book. Finished Tournament drawing. Began Wellington. Walked up to Punch Dinner. Called Ogden & Cooke. Professor late at dinner. Home with Guthrie in cab. Thursday February 10 In morning skemed picture. Afterwards photod self in greatcoat as Prince o' Wales. Also Jolley as Bishop. Consultation at 3.30 about dear Maud. Dr West came. £3.3.0. Maud seriously ill. Did not go out. Quiet evening. Sleepy after dinner. Friday February 11 Worked hard all day on Prince, Bishop etc. Crystal Pallis. Did not go out. Maud very slowly better. M slight sore throat. Saturday February 12 In morning at 10.15 rode Folkestone. Bartlett picked me up. Enjoyed ride. Stopped Butcher's pony. Home. Put photo house in order etc. Photod self in evening dress. In evening went to Sir Coutts Lindsay at home. Dull evening. After at Osgoods. Lost £2.15.0 cards. Home with Parsons very late. Punch not good at Gallery. Vandykes splendid. Sunday February 13 Very seedy in morning. Maud slowly better. At 1.0pm walked to Garrick. Met Mrs McTear. After quiet lunch wrote letters & walked home. Quiet dinner. Read Oceana. Bed 11.20pm. Mother drove to Ealing. Nellie Keith called. Roy oh! so good. Went with Mrs Mackenzie to Olympia.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 Monday February 14 Still bitterly cold. Awful east wind. Spencer called. Maud slowly better. Rode in Park at 12.0. Saw Mrs De la Rue. Talk about Dr Ringer. Went up to look at house on Campden Hill, South Villa. Also looked over stables. Home to lunch. Tuesday February 15 Rode in Park 12.15. Mother left for St Neots at 3.15pm with Emma. Worked on Coren's drawings. In the evening drove to & dined at Lucy's. Met Baroness de Worms, Dicey, Andrew Lang etc etc, Mrs Smalley. After walked to Club & Rules. Oysters. In at Beefsteak. Pelligrini. Home 2.0am. Wednesday February 16 Very cold. Worked on small block & Punch. Dear Maud not so well. Went after to Punch Dinner. Met Millais. He turned back & walked to Albert Gate. Cab at Piccadilly. Drove to Bow St. Saw Helmet. On to Bouverie St. Good Dinner. Home by carriage. Hard frost. Thursday February 17 Very dull day. Could not photo well. Did self as John Bull etc. Pipes. Stace away. Disappointed about French Horn. Dear Maud still very bad. Orton in. Worked after dinner. Friday February 18 Worked all day on Crocodile cut. Photod French horn. Wet. After in evening went to Abbey & Parsons. Good dinner. Canvas back ducks. Abbey, Parsons, Burnand, Lang, Comyns Carr, Black, Bret Harte, Osgood, Trower, Sambourne. Poker. Home 4.0am. Saturday February 19 Norman Lockyer's dinner. Reform Club 7.45pm. In morning rode with Bartlett round Wimbledon & Richmond. Cold & dull. Home. Tired. Put Photo House in order & also rested in Morning Room. Drove in carriage to Norman Lockyer's dinner. Met Sir Trevor Lawrence, Prof Huxley, Tadema, Christie (Astronomer Royal) Leonard Courtney, etc etc. Stayed till 1.0pm. Drove straight home. Sunday February 20 Up at 10.15 rode with Furniss. Met Spencer on Cobweb. Furniss full of Agricultural Hall. Spencer thrown from Cobweb. Long gallop. After rode through Wimbledon & Richmond. Tired very. Home. Rested. Boehm, Angell, Walter Austin & à Becketts called. Sleep after dinner. On to Club. Wrote letters. After to Mrs Ledger's at home. Saw Mrs Turner etc etc. Home 3.0am. Monday February 21 Lovely bright morning. Tickets for Pantomime came. Worked in morning. Went in afternoon to Pantomime. Walked thro' Park to Drury Lane & met carriage. Met Du Maurier & May. Saw Gilbert. Walked home. Quiet dinner & bed early.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 Tuesday February 22 Dull day. Rode at 12.15 in Park. Met Mrs De la Rue, Finlay, Alexander, Miss Trower. Home. After finished Wellington & girl. Afterwards drove to Du Mauriers. Dined. Met Mr & Mrs D.M, Silvia D.M, Mr & Mrs Comyns Carr, Boughtons, Sambournes, Abbey, Collin, Mrs Skerrow. (12) Home 11.30 Wednesday February 23 In morning worked at Coren's last drawing. Maud still ill. Very anxious about her. Nurse & mare. Words at lunch. After walked to British Museum, ¼ hr there. Met Pelligrini. Called 4 Tottenham Court Road & Whites. After on Whistler, & to Archbutts, Strand etc. Rest at Club. Walked to Punch Dinner. Picture sent from Marsh. Home with Guthrie in cab 12.30am. Thursday February 24 Abbey called in morning. Fine. After rode in Park. At 12.30pm went & photod model for Abbey. (Pencil note: Miss Wilkinson, Feby 12, 1895.) Back. Work on Punch. Directors on Ship. Dinner. Very sleepy afterwards. Bed. (Red ink: Took 1st Photographs from nude model ever done. Miss Wilkinson in Abbey's studio.) Friday February 25 Worked hard all day on Directors for Lightships. Worry letter from F.C.B. Finished in haste & drove to dinner at Mrs McTears. Long slow heavy dinner. Bells. Met Miss Heilbuth etc. Home by mare at 11.30. Did little work & bed 12.30pm. Saturday February 26 Up at 6.0am & work on small block. In morning put things in order etc etc. After rode thro' Park etc. In to theatre. Home. Wired for box at play. Went up to Abbey's studio & arranged platform. Home after. Quiet sit with Maud. Dinner. Bed early. Miss Ethel Coxan sent pasteboard things. (Red ink: Also the mantle, never returned. L.S.) Sunday February 27 Cold frosty morning. Rode by self on to Wimbledon. Called on Barker. Home fast. Lots of people about. Changed. Lunch at Boughtons. Maude Allens, Lancaster, Schlessingers, Robb, etc etc came in. After on to Dickens's. Home. Met Farquhars. Read. Changed plates 5.30pm. Quiet dinner, Abbey in by self. Bed 11.30pm. Monday February 28 Photographed Miss Wilkinson 2nd time. Dear Maud not so well. Frost & mist. Saw Orton. At 12.0 went up to Abbey's studio to photo model. Mistake about things. Back to stable after. Tadema, Parsons, Padgett etc came in. After home to lunch at 2.0pm. M went to Mrs Skerrow's. Went back. Fog came on. Home. Developed plates. After worked on Coren's drawing. Dinner. Bed. Tuesday March 1 Dull cold morning very. Harry Furniss announcement in the 'Times'. Went at 1.0 to Prince of Wales Theatre. Saw Alice in Wonderland. Took Roy & Judy.

Wednesday March 2 Dear Maud not so well. Talked of calling in West again. Better at night. Pottered all day. Rode in Park. Saw new girl 1st time on steps. Drove up to Abbey's & got camera. Worked on Cinderella after. Quiet evening. Thursday March 3 Dense fog. 9.0. M caught in it. Did not ride. Finished small cut Cinderella. Worked after on Lord Mayor defending Gog & Magog. 1st photo on new platform. Quiet evening. Worked after dinner. Friday March 4 Did not ride. Dense fog. Worked all day on Fowler defending Gog & Magog. After carriage took me to St Stephens Club. Dined with Hutton, son, Jones & Spencer. Billiards. Called Beefsteak. Spencer's Club & home by Spencer's trap. Saturday March 5 Dull wretched morning & fog. Rode later. Worked & did Herkomer & G.O.M small. After rode to Hampton Court & lunched. Very seedy & ill after dinner. Home by 5.30. Wired from Kingston. Quiet evening. Sketched Aegis. Sunday March 6 Dull miserable morning. Did not ride. Cleared after. Walked with M thro' Gardens. After took cab to Furniss's lunch (heavy). A'Becketts, Silver, Milliken, sister & mother of H.F. Sub Ed 'Times' in after. Looked at pictures. Carriage fetched us. Home. Very cold. Rested. Too much lunch. After dined at Corbutts. Met Miss Thomson for 1st time. Home at 11.15. Pettie there. Monday March 7 In morning put things in order. Rode in Park. Worked on Coren's drawing. After dinner went with M & Judy to Olympia. Annoyed about having to pay for seat. Home by hansom. Tuesday March 8 In morning rode in Park. Mrs De la Rue came up. Had to ride fast. Home. Worked on Coren's drawing. Miss Thomson called. Mr Barlow called at 3.0pm & told us about the proposed Academy resolution for Black & White Associates. Wednesday March 9 Worked on Coren's drawing. Too late to walk in evening. M went to her Mother's at Bath Hotel. Cab up to Weller's rooms & dined as Birch's guest at Royal Academy Club dinner. Cap'n Jones, Seymour Lucas etc etc, Colin Hunter. On to Punch Dinner. Drunken cabman & 6d. Home with Guthrie.

Lord James Douglas, old Hutton, Self, C.O.B, S.J.H, 2 De la Rues & Col (blank) Home with Mr De la Rue in cab. Drove in brougham after lunch to sale rooms & walk to look at photo apparatus. L.Fildes elected as Royal Academician. Friday March 11 Up & worked. Continued Spider. Photod Jolley in cell. Worked till 3.0am. Tired & bed 3.30am. Saturday March 12 Very tired & up late in morning. After walked on to Club. Met Bartlett on horseback. Went to Steven's Sale Rooms. Paid for studio camera stand. On to Whites. Fire had been there. Back to Club for lunch. Grossmith, Kemble, Comyns Carr, Beerbohm Tree. After fetched stand by cab. Home. Mended stand. Quiet dinner & evening. Got on with Aegis. Read 'Devil on 2 sticks'. Sunday March 13 Lovely sunny morning but cold & hard frost. Furniss & Spencer did not turn up. On to Barker's on Folkestone over Wimbledon Common. Saw his Irish horse, Oh! Home through Richmond. After lunch at home drew in bottles for menu of Kinsman dinner. After went to call on Fildes & after took drawing to Parsons. Kept at door ringing bell. Home. Bottle of Lanson for dinner. Sleep after & rest. Arms felt numb for 1st time. Bed 11.20. Read Fouquiers Tales. Monday March 14 Fine sunshiney morning but bitterly cold. Maud not so well. Cooke called with trees. Wrote Millais. After went & called on Mr Viles. Walked. Jolley came on Folkestone after. Rode in Park with Gilbert. Spoilt ride. After Judy went out with carriage & came back because the mare was lame. Mrs Furniss went to Arundel. Rained incessantly all day. Sent Jolley for waterproof overalls etc from Cordings. Did small cut also of Dhuleep Singh. Friday June 3 Photod Jolley in rain as Gladstone Harpoonist. Worked on Gladstone as Harpoonist. Finished at 9.15. Dined & went on to Globe Theatre met Langleys, Mother & Stokes (blow him). Went after to Beefsteak Club. Wrote letters. Met Leslie Ward. Home 1.30. Rained incessantly all day. Saturday June 4 Photographed Miss Wilkinson. In morning wired to Miss Wilkinson. Met me at 12.0 at Abbey's & Parsons. Worked from 12.0 to 4.0. Home in interval to lunch. Marion & Roy returned home from Arundel in afternoon. Quiet evening. Bed. Fetched things in cab from 54 Bedford Gardens. Sunday June 5 Rode to Lady Freaks in morning. Lunched there. Very hot. Met Miss Gilbert & Miss Young. Home by 6.30. Dinner. Quiet. Bed. Sunday June 12 Worked all day hard, 15 hours, on Jubilee block. Hamilton & Midge lunched with us. Went tired to bed. Monday June 13 Worked all day till 7.0pm on Jubilee block. After rode in Park. Awfully hot day. Rode in Park from 7.0 to 8.0. Tuesday June 14 In morning up 8.30. Roy his bath. Paper. Went with Hamilton L & Roy to Olympia to try horses. Mare jumped well. Very hot. In afternoon went via Garrick to Lord Mayor's Dinner to Literature. Sat next to Ouless & Wills. Walked to Garrick after with Furniss & Gregory. Vicat Cole there with Hulswelle, Joe Knight etc. Home 1.30pm. In afternoon rode mare to Wimbledon. Lovely evening. Passed Artists’ Corps. Sunday June 19 Awfully hot. Seedy in morning. Just caught train back with Col Jones & Seton. Home by Metropolitan. Eve of the Jubilee. Bangs, Elliot, Ford, 2 Jones's, Martineau, Sambourne, Seton, Sterry, Walters, Warre, Weldon & Wingfield dined. Tuesday June 21 Her Majesty's Jubilee Day. Left at 8.0am. Arrived 90 Piccadilly 8.30am. Drove with Mare. Jolley drove it too close. Row'd him. 2 other people there. No crowd particularly or crush. Waited till procession passed, 11.45am. Silly red man. Mrs Watney. Spencer on duty just opposite & Percy. Brought them in to lunch. Return procession at 2.30pm. After all broke up cheerily. Thursday June 23 In morning got ready for Police cut. Photod Jolley in cocked hat. In evening dined at Burnands with Polly. Bilious. Hammonds & Miss Hollingshead there. Home 12.0 midnight. Furniss's new book out. Home by Garrick. Thursday July 7 Worked in morning plates & Triangular Duel. After took cab to à Becketts. Maske of Flowers very good indeed. On to pleasant Garden Party at Mrs Lewis's. Met pretty girl with German husband & Miss Cox. Home. Dined at McLarens. John Bright. Very close & hot. After to Alfred Reed & Corney Grain's at home. A1. Mr Knowles, Australian, Knowles' brother, Randolph Churchill, Mrs Kemp, Baker, Mona Kemp, M & self went up river as far as Walton from Surbiton. One in canoe. Lunch opposite Ingram's place. In morning had a hard pull in rough sea up to yacht in Coastguard's boat. After sailed up & down Southampton Water. Home. Molesworth turned up. Dressed for dinner. No vegetables for dinner. Saw Arthur Blunt, Gardner, Montague Williams etc. Home by carriage. Mrs Watney's letter. Thursday July 28 In morning up 9.30. Wrote letters. Developed plates. Photod Billeries. Worked all day & did drawing on paper of Billeries. Left it in carriage at 1 Belgrave Place. Drove on to Beefsteak Club. Dined. Met Taf Reed, Sir Charles Drummond etc. Drove Taf home. Cold came on. Friday December 23 In morning up at 9.15. Put room in order & got drawer ready for photos etc. Conny called. Roy still seedy in bed. At 2.0pm rode mare (sluggish) over Wimbledon Common. Saw house to let. Called Barkers. Home by house again. Glass of Old & Bitter. Along Hammersmith Road home. Wrote letters, looked over Pearks account. Talked to Roy in bed. Quiet dinner. Rest after. Bed early. Had hot grog for cold. Saturday December 24 In morning at 10.45 rode Folkestone through Park & Marble Arch intending to go north. Turned back because of cold. Home. Changed things. Tapped sherry cask. Walked on to Club, caught up dear Maud. Xmas Tree. Lunched.

LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1887 Boiled beef & mince pie. Merrivale & Eastbourne. Wrote lots of letters. At 4.45 M fetched me in brougham. After called at Langleys. Brandy, soda. Rain. M had cab for box. Bought grapes & oranges at Butts. Home. Roy better. Dinner. Bottle of Lanson. Read 'Times'.etc. Bed 10.45. Tapped sherry. Cosens octave. Sunday December 25 Very cold in morning. Got on mare at 9.30am. Nearly turned back. Met young Chesterton. Rode on to Wimbledon. Girl & two galloping cads. Round Richmond & home. Met Dr & Mrs Parr etc. Lunch, goose etc. Roy still upstairs. Found mistake about Pearks acct. Langleys, Guthrie & Hensman called. Chicks & toys etc. Roy's cake cut. Very cold. To dinner at the Boehms. Drove on after in carriage & dined at Boehms. Con, Eff, selves (& Langley after dinner only.) Game of Billiards. Shell out. Talk of watch & home. Good evening. Felt well. Monday December 26 Put India Rubber on printing frame etc etc. Also labels for drawers. Photod Xmas tree. Did not ride. In afternoon walked up to Club & dined by self. Went to Pantomome of 'Puss in Boots' after. Looked in at Garrick. Weldon & Gillie & home. Tuesday December 27 Did not ride. Stace put room in order etc. Mona Kemp & Mother called. Maud ill. Emma went for holiday & caught cold. Walked up to Club & back. Had tea & wrote letters. Wednesday December 28 Did not ride. Edgar Boehm called with Marion. Punch Dinner. Bradbury back in old form again. Very bad. Had Queen & Pope to do. Drove home by self. No Guthrie. Thursday December 29 Fine morning. Photod my mother for Queen & Pope. Also Jolley for Pope. Chicks better. Mrs Stone came in to dinner & stayed late keeping M up. Friday December 30 Worked hard all day on Queen & Pope. Finished at 9.0pm. Quiet dinner. Emma ill. Roy still upstairs. Saturday December 31 Very cold. Put things in order. Walked up to & lunched at Garrick. M called in carriage & after called at Covent Garden Theatre for box. On to Old Masters & Grosvenor & home. After quiet dinner drove to Covent Garden Theatre & saw Pantomime, 'Jack & the Beanstalk'. Good business. French change actor. Home by cab. In morning room. Watched watch change.
