MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1883 Notes in front of diary: Mrs Bosanquet’s Chocolate Cake. Work the whole of 5 eggs with ½ lb of fine sugar till they are nearly white. Grate 6 oz of chocolate & 3 oz of finely chopped almonds, add them to the eggs saving a few of the almonds to sprinkle in a plain pipe mould. Then have 6 oz of clarified butter just warmed to an oil & a ¼ lb of fine flour & add just some butter & then flour till it is all used up to the other ingredients & bake about ¾ of an hour in not too quick an oven. The centre can be filled or not with whipped cream, or bake in a plain mould without the pipe.
Jelly or Great Debility(?) 2 oz of isinglass. 2 oz gum Arabic. 3 oz white sugar. ½ bot. port wine. These ingredients to be boiled over a slow fire till the whole is dissolved. Pour it into a basin or jar. Two teaspoonfuls in a teacup dissolve, take this quickly twice a day.
Lobster à la Murphy. Cut the rind of a lemon into thin strips. The juices, a pat of butter, a gill of cream. Stir over fire till well mixed. Have ready the meat of a lobster add the sauce season to taste & serve hot.
Cold lemon pud. 5 yolks of eggs well beaten with ¼ lb of sifted sugar, the juice of a lemon & ½ the rind of one grated. A little vanilla. Dissolve ½ an oz of isinglass in ½ a teacup of water. Strain it & stir it quickly with the eggs & sugar add the whites beaten to a stiff froth. Put into a shape & turn out.
Raspberry fool, strawberry do.
Crème de volaille with curry in, served on round low mound of rice, jelly gravy in centre.

Tuesday 2 January. Bacon. Leg mutton, rice, milk pud, fruit. Kidneys, meat volaille, mince pies, Tilda pud etc. Lovely day ! Nurse went to see doctor. Miss B came. M not in, angry. Nellie comes to tea & lunch. Mr Woodroffe, Bertie Thornton, Lady Freake & Mrs Spiers called. Nurse & chicks went for walk.
Wednesday 3 January. Bacon. Cold mutton, milk pud, treacle & jelly do. Steak & macaroni cheese. Punch dinner. Mrs S. & self had din. in drawing room. Kate went out to see doctor & Mrs Keith. Mrs B. Keith called. Mrs Boehm called. Saw parlour maid. Mrs S. took chicks for walk.
Thursday 4 January. Bacon. Roast beef, Yorkshire pud, milk do. White soup, cod & oysters, cold beef salad, plum pud etc. Colder. Read Nellie’s story. Mrs S. took chicks out. Dear Lin’s birthday. Drew £2.10.2. Syrett & (illeg). Geraldine came to tea.
Friday 5 January. Bacon. Cold beef, milk pud, plum do. White soup, volaille of beef, Kidneys, wafer puds. Chicks out with Nurse. Papa sent my check. Little Vic came in.

Monday 8 January. Bacon, eggs. Cold beef, Laura pud, milk do. Fish, cold beef, apple tart. Lin dines at Conny’s club. Went to Miss Elmore’s with Roy. V. cold. Sent registered letter about maid, 3/10. Pd 1/- for entering name at office. Ans. 2 advertisements. Mrs S. had fall last night & hurt her back.
Tuesday 9 January. Bacon. Leg mutton, cold beef, Mrs S. pud, milk do, apple tart & custard. Mrs Carter & 2 daughters to lunch. Lovely day, cold. Very pleasant dinner at Miss E’s. Met Mr Tenniel, Miss Leche now Mrs R & husband, Mr Mrs Tattersall, Mr Hedges, Mr Polhill. Bitterly cold. Miss Elmore’s dinner 7.30.

Monday 22 January. Bacon. Cold pork, cold fowl, eels. Boiled mutton, apples & custard. Damp dull day. Mrs A a’Beckett called afternoon. Maud goes to tea at Mrs Coward’s. Mrs Mackenzie called, wanted us to dine there Wed. Saw Cook. Took £50 out of Lang’s(?) Bank Hut on to Bank. Baby had bad night.

Arrived at High Cliff Hotel Bournemouth at 6 o/c with Father & Mother. Saw floods after passing Winchester, barren country for miles near Bournemouth. Long day.
Sunday 25 February. Rather foggy morning. Went for walk along sea shore alone. Broken steps, girl helped me. Went out with Papa later. Lovely afternoon, had sleep in Mother’s room. Mother full of pain. Backache. Letters fr Lin, drawings fr Maud.
Monday 26 February. Petite amie arrivée. Took long drive. Papa took cold. Lovely day.
Tuesday 27 February. Mother & self took little walk along cliff, cold wind. Papa indigestion after lunch, pressed beef. High pheasant for dinner. Mr Chancelor(?) came in after din. Mother lay down.
Wednesday 28 February. Mother seedy ankles bad. Papa awful pain after lunch. Met Tab. Self called at Dr Scott’s. Tabs & self dinner alone. Dr S came in, v. nice man. Punch & World came.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1883 Went to see rooms at Mr Bentinck’s rec’dn, don’t like them. Mother & self took drive. Lovely day. After lunch went in bath chair & donkey for walk with Ada & Brown. Ada had tea, both Mother & Papa better.
Friday 2 March. Cold day. Mother went out in chair, Tafles. Tab tired, lay down. Mother & Papa lunched upstairs alone, Ada & self down. Mother & self did shopping spent 10/- on toys etc, 2/- boy for chair. I walked with Mother after lunch, she went in chair.
Saturday 3 March. Ada goes up to London with Brown. A. took walk with me for 1 ¼ hour, I in chair. Very fine day, piercing cold E. wind. Took A. & B to station, came back & went drive with Mother in little Vic to Branksome Woods, lovely. Mother awfully seedy, had long sleep when she came in. Papa’s cough worse. Lin comes at 9 something.
Sunday 4 March. Bournemouth. Compôte of fruits. Recipe. Pears round, oranges do, chips(?) in centre & prunes on top. Syrup, orange juice & sugar & flavoured with chips(?). Lovely day. Slept badly. Went out for drive in chair with Lin & then walked till lunch. After lunch took drive with Mother for one hour in Hotel landau. Lin & self dined at table d’hôte. Sent to Dr Dobell for Papa. Cd not come till tomorrow at ¼ p 3. Lin went to Bourne Hall. Spent 10/- toys, 6/- chair, 1/- telegram, 1/- stamps, 1/6 cups & saucers, 6 (illeg) nut oil(?), 1/6 telegram & stamps.
Monday 5 March. Lovely day. Went out all morning with Lin to bric a brack shops. Lunched with him early. Went to station with him. He went to London by 1.20. Got eau de vie for Mother fr Heron’s. Papa Mother & self dinner upstairs.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1883 Bitter east wind tho’ bright. Mother & self drove in fly fr Hotel to station for “Times”. I bought paper & fruit etc. Slow fly (Victoria). Hail stones, awfully cold, bright afternoon. Wrote letters. Went for walk alone into town about 4 o/c, bought stamps, & stockings for Mother.
Wednesday 7 March. Gale at night & bitter cold east wind. Fine morg, very stiff wind blowing. Papa bad night. Mother seems little better. Letter fr Jess & business letters. Dr Farr called found Papa not so well. Mother & self went in double bath chair to station for paper, bought 2 bottles Champagne at Heron’s, collars cuffs etc, pd man 3/11. Papa eat no dinner. Poor little Jack died after 3 month’s suffering.
Thursday 8 March. Lovely day, bitter east wind. Letters as usual. Had telegram about little Jack, very sad. Went out with Mother in Hotel brougham to telegraph etc. Dr Farr came at lunch time. Papa little better. I went for walk after lunch along coast, bitter cold, attempt at snow. Fine & sunny notwithstanding.
Friday 9 March. Lovely sunny day, still bitter east wind. Went shopping in shaky double bath chair fly. (illeg) had cold, horse too. Bitterly cold. Mrs Arthur Burnand’s dinner ¼ to 8 o/c. Went to station for papers, bought jug, broth bowl, cups & saucers, (illeg) jug. After lunch I walked into town, bought cream. V. cold, v. tired. Papa v. bad. Mother eat no dinner. Dr Farr came.
Saturday 10 March. Lovely day, still bitter cold wind. I went in double bath chair fr Hotel for hour’s shopping. Papa little better, Mother too. Sat on sands ½ hour, old lady & dau. Mrs Joshua dinner ½ to 8. Dr Orton coming at 9 o/c. Dr Farr came afternoon. Did not go out after lunch. Dr Orton came late.

Went & met Lin at 3.15. He & O went for walk. Lin, O & self went down to table d’hôte, v. amusing. Lin & O out after. I to bed early. Feel seedy.
Monday 12 March. Lovely day. Dr Orton went up to town before breakfast. The two girls with their father & mother left. Mother & self took hours’ drive in Hotel car. Lin & self lunched together in dining room. Went for stroll. Went to station with him, saw him off. Papa not so well quite.
Tuesday 13 March. Lovely day, cold wind. Drove & shopping with Mother. After lunched walked with Mother along cliff. Bought things of man. Papa not so well, had no dinner. Lin dined at Lord Onslow’s, Richmond Terrace. Horrid palpitations again. Poor little Jack’s funeral. Lady Monckton’s at home after H.M’s drawing room. Effie Boehm presented.
Wednesday 14 March. Size of room dining 25, 15 or 16. Cutlets & shreds of celery, bacon & beans carrots etc in center. Lovely morning, wind changed. Papa very seedy, not so well. Went out shopping alone in double bath chair. Mother tried packing. Made blancmange & beef tea. Mother lay down while Papa & self dined. Very tired.
Thursday 15 March. Dullish day. Went out shopping for Mother, bought sweet little teapot 2/3 for Mrs Herne. Papa awfully upset abut Ada & H.F. Dr Fall called says we are to make a move. Wire fr Lin. Wired back. Lady Monckton’s at home after Drawing Room fr 4.30 till 6.30. Lady Freake’s at home. Boat Race (Oxford & Cambridge.)

Monday 19 March. Cold fowl & bacon. Cold beef, broth, bread pud. White soup, dressed crab, stewed pigeons, loin of mutton, cauliflower, potatoes chiffon, merangues, saucer puds, egg anchovy. Went out shopping with Mother. Lunched at Mother’s. Ada Papa & Geraldine there. Ada, Ham F. & Nellie to din.

Thursday 15 November. Shoulder mutton, milk pud, rice. Soup, curried beef, neck mutton, cauliflower, apple russe, toasted cheese. Went out afternoon (illeg) cold. Had tea with Alice St. Saw Babies. Called saw Waddy & Baby.
Friday 16 November. Hashed shoulder minced beef, stewed mutton, cake puds, milk do. Soup, lobster, steak, apple jelly, roe of herring. Went out with Roy, warmer. Called at Gds, Papa gone, Waddy out. Saw Baby. Maud & Nurse bad colds, Lin’s better. Met Mrs Coward, embarras avec sa bonne.
Saturday 17 November. Bloater, bacon. Roast beef, Yorkshire pud, milk do. Soup, sprats, neck mutton roasted, tomatoes, coffee custard, toasted cheese. Took Roy for walk & shopping. Waddie & Baby go to Jessie today. Maud’s cold still 47

Sunday 18 November. Sausages. Roast fowl, cold beef, B. sprouts, apple pud & custard. Soup, fried soles, roast mutton, apple tart, savory. Went to 11 o/c with Roy. Sp & Ada, Mr Hirsch & Olive Tucker.
Monday 19 November. Called on Mrs Watney, A. Burnand, Boehm, Lady Blaikie. Cold.
Tuesday 20 November. Leg mutton, pud etc. Soup, eels stewed, giblet pie, chocolate pud, anchovy paste. Called on Mrs Keith, stayed tea. Walked there drove back. Went to Comedy Theatre enjoyed it immensely. Vernon Watney came in our box. Drove him home.
Wednesday 21 November. Bacon. Giblet pie, cold mutton, bread pud, milk do. Stewed eels, chops, chocolate pud, cheese. Mrs Sambourne coming. Mrs Palmer’s dinner. Mde Perrant 11 o/c. Miss J. 4 o/c.
Thursday 22 November. Forgotten.
Friday 23 November. Mrs S. & self went out walking, fine day.
Saturday 24 November. X. Petit ami arrivé l’après midi. Went out morg shopping.
Sunday 25 November. Seedy, stayed in all day. Chicks went to Church after dinner. Lin rode Messel’s horse to Richmond. 48

Tuesday 27 November. Mrs S. went to Ealing. I called on Mother, saw Carrie & Ted. Edgar came home. Lin went hunting with Queen’s, home early. Little Kemp came with her nurse to tea.
Wednesday 28 November. Went & pd books, v. high again. Mrs Frere called afternoon. Con went to Jacksons.
Thursday 29 November. Edgar came morg. Mud Paxton to tea.

Saturday 1 December. Dined at Mother’s. Lin & self alone there. Papa not v. well. Talked with Mother in drawing room alone after.
Sunday 2 December. Went to Church with Roy, Nurse & Maud. Called & saw Papa, Mother at Church. Humphreys waited alone for first time.
Monday 3 December. Went out, called on Mother. Con returned fr Birkenhead better. Edgar at home. Went & saw Dr Harcourt, talked some time with him.

Wednesday 5 December. Lost silver serviette ring. Cave went out evg on his own ac’t. Called afternoon on Friths, Drabbles, Mrs Banting, & Aunt Netta. Stayed some time with Aunty & Uncle John. Met Aunt Linda & Mrs Holmes. Lin Punch dinner. Maud lunched at Mrs Paxton’s & stayed to tea. Nurse seedy.
Thursday 6 December. Went for walk called at Mother’s saw Edgar & Judy. Mother’s eyes bad. Tickets for “La Vie”, too cold to go. Not found ring yet no men in house yesterday. Pd books.
Friday 7 December. Went out morg shops with Mrs S. Went out afternoon, called on Mrs Hunt & Livesey, Mother & Mrs Joachim. Papa sent Reed with me. Still no ring found, Lin went to Princess theatre after dinner.
Saturday 8 December. Drawing room cleaned. Shop’d. Lin & I dined at Mother’s. Dietz’s, Judy & Tilda there. Went out morg shop’g.
Sunday 9 December. Seedy rather, in all day. Chicks to Church, Mrs S. to Church.
Monday 10 December. Mrs S. & self went to Grove, bought dresses, table etc. Came back v. tired, cd not sleep in consequence. Tilda sent round.
Tuesday 11 December. Lin went to evg reunion(?) at H. Furniss’s. Nelly came to tea & dinner. Mrs Speed & Jessie Harding called. Gregoire cake. Tilda came round.

Friday 21 December. Lovely morg. Lin & self dine at Mother’s.
Saturday 22 December. Jess & Ham came up. I went out morg, & afternoon shopping with Roy. Very tired.
Sunday 23 December. X. petit ami arrive. Mrs S. to church. Mr Peto & brother called. Uncle & Aunt John & Marion & Mr Todd called. Fine clear morg.
Monday 24 December. Xmas Eve. Very seedy. Dressed Xmas tree, chicks delighted. Sp sent us 2 birds & came in & saw us.
Tuesday 25 December. Xmas Day. Chicks lunched at Mother’s. Mrs S. Lin & self dinner at Mother’s, cab to & fro, first (illeg) day. Sp & Ada called. Cave out. Mrs S, Jess, Ham, two selves, Father, Mother, Ed & Con only at Mother’s. Played whist & nap after dinner. Emma out afternoon & evg.

Friday 28 December. Went with Mrs S. in cab to Baker St Bazaar. Pd Hewetts 9/- for tea. Not good. Jess & Ju came , fetched at once. Mr & Mrs Fildes came, asked us to dinner Friday week & chicks to tea next Thursday.
Saturday 29 December. Went with Mrs S. to Whiteleys, bought turkey etc for our Sunday Xmas day. Lin & I dined at Mrs Lewis, v. pleasant evg but I felt seedy rather. Met Hunters, Ionides, Mr Agnew etc. Emma fetched me at 11 o/c. Groves pd books. Misterious disap. 1 sovereign fr house money.
Sunday 30 December. Xmas dinner at 2 o/c. Very jolly with chicks. Tweet & brother called & Spencer. Emma out evg.
