MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1884 Notes at front of diary:

For lace & white ties. Soak ties in cold water for a day to get out starch. 1 tablespoon full of ordinary starch & ½ a pint of cold water & a teaspoon full of borax in hot water to dissolve it. After ties have been well washed rub them well in the starch & iron immediately after having strained them in a towel. Miss Payton. Lace done the same only using a teaspoon full of Gum Arabic to ½ pint of water hot.
Puff paste. 1 lb flour, 1 lb butter, squeeze of lemon or tea spoon of vinegar. Water to nead the flour to a dough. Nead for 10 or 20 minutes. Roll it out. Roll a pound of butter in a wet cloth & then fold the paste neatly over & roll twice. Put away for a quarter of an hour & roll twice again. Put by another ¼ of an hour & roll twice (6 times rolling). Roll then to this thickness // for oyster patties - cut tops separately. Bake 15 minutes. Fill with oysters done as follows: Banada of Oysters: 1 tablespoon of flour to 3 oz of butter melted in saucepan. Then add milk or cream until sufficiently liquid. Pepper, salt & little mace. Then add the oysters for an instant.
Oyster soup. 2 tins of oysters, 1 tin of mock turtle soup. Take away the oysters. Mix the butter & flour with mace lemon peel & cayenne pepper add all together. After boiling add cream at the last minute. Milk would do. Frumerty. Mrs Stone’s pud. Cornflour, sugar, milk & finely chopped almonds cream whipped over flavoured with liqueur. V. good. Fanny pudding. ½ lb suet, sugar, raisins, tablespoon full treacle & water or milk to mix. Small basket full of bread. Boil them all well mixed for 9 hours.

Wednesday 2 January. Cold mutton, bird, fillets whiting, giblet pie, jelly, milk pud, mince pies. Cold game, fillet beef, plum pud. Mrs Bankes Tomlin’s juvenile party fr 611 o/c. Went by omnibus with Mrs S. to Marshalls. Don lost. Very tired, bought blue silk 9 yds 6/11 the yd. Groves out evg. Punch dinner. Hollands dance. Edgar went met Effie Boehm. Mr Millais called.
Thursday 3 January. Chicks go to tea at Mrs Fildes 3 0/c. Mrs Boehm, Mrs Watney, Mr & Mrs Tattersall & Miss Wilson called to see Diploma. Edgar called. Lin to Grosvenor Gallery.
Friday 4 January. Dear Lin’s birthday. Lin worked hard all day. I went & saw Mother, found her alone.
Saturday 5 January. Lin & self went to Private View of Old Masters. Met heaps of friends. Very wet. Santly & fiancée!
Sunday 6 January. Sp & Ada called. Maud lunched at Mother’s. Lin & self dine at Mrs Fildes 7 o/c. Thirty five people called to see Diploma. V. tired. Gordon Thompson at the Fildes. 2

Monday 7 January. Diploma finished went off about 3 0’c. Don found, dog’s home. Appointment with C. Stokes at 2 o/c. Mrs Boehm’s subscripton dance 9.30. Marion & Aunt Linda called. Mr X. Had carriage to go to C. Stokes, took Mrs S. & Maud. Had two teeth done.
Tuesday 8 January. Mrs Ionides children’s party at 4 till 9. Lin & self also going. I came away rather early. Went out morg saw Mother & Papa. Con, Ju, Father & Mother go to Westwood this afternoon.
Wednesday 9 January. I go to Jessie’s, Trysull Wolverhampton. Chicks go to Her Majesty’s theatre with Mr Abbey to see “Little Red Riding Hood”, Lin with them.
Thursday 10 January. Went for drive with Midge, lovely day. Mrs Lewis’ juvenile party. Mrs Twiss’ juvenile party.
Friday 11 January. Letter fr Lin. Invite fr Mr Weldon to dine & meet Sir W. & Lady Wiseman. Drove with Midge. Mrs & Miss Underhill called morg.
Saturday 12 January Mrs Skirrow’s at home. Lin came down. Ham went hunting. Midge & self called walking on Col Dickens. Saw Miss Smythe there.

Thursday 31 January. Dull wet day. Con’s visit to Jess postponed. Take chicks & Maud Paxton to Drury Lane pantomime. Mother sent us fly. Gilberts there. Lin dined with C. Stokes & went to Fabra(?) after. Maud & Maud P had tea dinner with me alone. Nurse to pantomime. Took Vic.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1884 Mrs Riviere’s dinner 7.30. Mrs Ionides dinner, Mrs Marcus Stone’s dinner. Our darling father was taken from us, he fell asleep at 7 o/clock in the morg & was taken without pain at 3.20.
Friday 14 March. Miserable day, fine out. Sp called. Ada S.J. called.
Saturday 15 March. Too ill to go round to see dear Mother. Drove with Mrs S. & chicks to Richmond, felt better for air. Very miserable. Dr O came & said I was to go out.
Sunday 16 March. Went round to see Mother.
Monday 17 March. Spent all day with Mother. Nellie came, went with me in bath chair to choose cross for dear Papa. Stayed with Mother who keeps up wonderfully thank God.
Tuesday 18 March. Our darling father taken to Westwood & St Peter’s. I spent the day with dear Mother, dined there, Conrad, Mervyn, dear Lin & Ham F. Returned at 8 o/c.
Wednesday 19 March. Ada came to see me. Go to Mother D.V. this afternoon. Spent afternoon with Mother & dined alone with her.
Thursday 20 March. Emma leaves to be married next Sunday. Worked morg. Went to Mother all afternoon. Mervyn seedy. Laurence comes. Dear Lin hard at work. Doctor Orton came to see me.

Sunday 23 March. Went to early service St Mary Abbot’s. Called at dear Mother’s & returned here to lunch. Uncle J & Aunt Netta called & Wyckliff Taylor. Canon Harford dined. Very eratic, thought he w’d give me some comfort in religion, v. disappointed. Went to dear Mother afternoon came back to dinner. Felt unhappy leaving Mother as Jess & Ham gone to church.

Sunday 30 March. Went to church 9.30. Mrs S. also went. Lin rode morg. Went for walk with Lin after lunch. Feel dreadfully depressed three weeks today & dear Papa seemed so well.
Monday 31 March. Had wire from dear Mother. D.V. go to Torquay tomorrow. Can’t bear leave dear Lin yet long to see Mother. Mrs Chester’s at home 9 till 1 o/c. Went afternoon to Uncle John’s & Uncle Edwin’s. Do not think Uncle looking well, am sure he feels darling father’s loss v. much. Mrs S. very kindly doing my dress for me.
Tuesday 1 April. Walked with Judy to Harvey & Nicoles, drove back. Wire from Mother to stop my going to Torquay. Met Mrs Morley. Judy lunched here. Maud went out with Con.

Wednesday 21 May. Mrs Tomlin’s dinner party. Cannot go. Called on Mrs Huish, Mrs Nicol at Grand Hotel, Tabby at Alexandra Hotel & had tea with her, Ham & Mervyn. Left cards at C. Went for first ride after 10 years with Lin to Wimbledon. 2 ½ hours out, awfully stiff. Dear Roy’s hair cut.

Friday 20 June. Heavy dull morning. Had the carriage & drove with Roy to Phillips for china, nothing much there! Took Roy to Mde Tussaud’s, much amused. Left feathers at Fleischmans to be cleaned. Went in & had tea with Mother.
Saturday 21 June. Mrs Gordon’s at home 3-7.30. Lovely day. Introduced to Mrs Harrison do not care for her at all. Two Barclay girls heavy & giggly, Mrs H familiar. Mrs Burnand & twins, Mr Allan! The Canon & sons, Goodalls, Vowles! Major Knox. Lin went to “at home” after our return gave up dinner at Savage Club.

Sunday 3 August. Sp came to lunch. He went for long ride with Lin after tea & dined here. Lovely day. Chicks to church morg. & evg.
Monday 4 August. Lovely day. Laura Stone coming to tea.
Tuesday 5 August. Dear Maud’s 9th birthday. Miss Penn’s last day. Been here 9 weeks £6.15.0.
Wednesday 6 August. D.V. We go to Dumpton for 3 months. Emma comes in charge of house. Came to Park House by South Eastern. Very comfortable journey, dearest Mother met us at Station with Tilda 9/- for fares fr Ramsgate here! awful. Found house very dirty. Darling Roy slept in my room.
Thursday 7 August. Spent day arranging house & having it cleaned.
Friday 8 August. Lin came down. Felt lonely went for walk, saw Mother & Tilda, went over to Westwood with them dined there, John brought me back. Felt awfully sad at Westwood feel the dreadful blank there. Chicks went with Nurse & Waddie to sands. Tilda came & spent hour with me. Intensely hot. Lin arrived late.
Saturday 9 August. Lin & self had dinner at 8 o/c. Lin & self walked by Dumpton Gap to Ramsgate did shop’g there, drove back.

Monday 11 August. Tilda fetched me & we did shopping in Ramsgate & went to Westwood, came back with Con in buggy to dinner. Lin out all day fishing, brought home 18 fish.
Tuesday 12 August. Dear Roy sick, bilious. V. hot day. Con came over morg. & stayed some time.
Wednesday 13 August. Judy comes at 6.45. by L.C. & Dover Railway. Lin went to town & rode to Station. Mother called morg. with Wad & Dora. Roy feverish & tiny scarlet rash all over him. Mr Raven came, scare! Had carriage, called on Mrs Hammond & did shopping. Judy slept in my room.
Thursday 14 August. Rained hard all night. Dois prendre médecine. Roy much better, still in bed. Mr Raven called, does not seem to know cause any better than ourselves. Drove to Westwood, left Maud & called on Mrs Orchardson, Mrs Moxon & Mrs Peto. Met Mrs Peto & Lady C. & Mrs Orchardson. Had tea at Mother’s & brought Maud back.
Friday 15 August. Darling Roy not so well again. Mr Raven called, mysterious. Drove to Mother’s & Ramsgate. Mother & Tilda to tea, no butter! Judy walked into Ramsgate morg. Ju, Maud & self walked to pillar box. Lin rode Cobweb & rode horses to sea before breakfast. V. anxious about dear Roy.

Monday 18 August. Mrs Sambourne comes. Mrs S. not coming till Wednesday. Maids v. late. Little bat in bath, 2 others in room. Lin & Mr M. gone fishing for day. Edg. coming to lunch. Tabs’ birthday. Rode Punch with Lin before dinner. Went to Westwood, saw dear Mother Tilda, Dora & met Edgar coming fr. St. Peters. Mr Lehman called early. Saw washer woman, satisfactory. Mr M. & Lin went fishing caught 5 fish.
Tuesday 19 August. Dine at Mrs Orchardson’s 7 o/c. Darling Roy’s 6th birthday. Tilda & Con over. Lin & self rode before breakfast. Lin had spill with Cobweb, horses v. irritable on act. of heat & flies. Sent adv. to Morg Post, wrote to Ashford paper. 3 brace of grouse fr. Tressady. Heard of cook at Mrs O’s. Jess & Ham returned fr. Ireland, v. surprised to see them.
Wednesday 20 August. Flowers. Walked to sands after lunch with Maud & Ju whilst Mr Milliken & Lin worked. Retrurned at 4. Mrs Lehmann, 4 girls, Mrs Peto, Mrs Harding & 2 children came to tea!!!!!! Lin & Mr M. to tennis at Mother’s. 2 grouse fr Spencer at dinner v. good. Played bagatelle after dinner & sat up till 11.30. Heard of cook fr Mrs Lords.

Dreadful fright about carbolic acid in cider cup. Bagatelle after dinner. Drove round to call on Mrs Lehmann & went to see dearest father’s resting place, put roses there. Saturday 23 August. Lunch at Mrs Orchardson’s. Ju & self drove to O’s. Lovely day. Lin rode, had lunch there. Called on Petos, Lady Blanche there & Mrs Harding. Drove to Westwood, left Maud there. She came back on donkey. Lin rode back.
Sunday 24 August. Go to early service. To tea at Mrs Lehmann’s. Went to early service. Mother & Tilda there. Took flowers to dear father, feel v. down. V. tired fr. long walk. Kitten! Chicks delighted. Nurse took Maud to Church evg, home late. Went to sleep afternoon, too tired to go to Lehmann’s.
Monday 25 August. Fine morg. Ju & self went to Ramsgate shop’g. Drove back. Mr & Mrs Orchardson & Langleys to dinner 8 o/c. Pleasant evg. Poured afternoon. Ju & self arranged flowers. Mrs S. cannot come, Mrs Worth v. ill.
Tuesday 26 August. Lovely day. Numbers of letters fr. cooks. Dear Mother & Edg. called after lunch, just getting ready to ride. Went for long ride with Lin on Punch. The chicks spent day on sands. Judy walked to Ramsgate. V. sleepy after dinner.

Thursday 28 August. Spent morg. with Ju in kitchen cooking. Letters fr. Fanny cook & another cook fr. Mrs Slater. Wet & fine alternately. Walked to sands with chicks after lunch. Met Lehmanns there. Came home to tea. Lin v. busy on big block. Waters waited at dinner. Spoke to Carr about cook. Arranged to have Mrs Carr. Have misgivings about her coming.
Friday August 29 Ju & self cooked. Chicks went to sands. Tilda came over. We go for drive at 3 o/c. & then dine at Mother’s. Feel tired. Lovely day. Lin hard at work. We called at Abernethys, left cards for Mrs McClean. Went over house (horrid). Dined at dear Mother’s. Edg, Ham, Con, Jess, Tilda, Mother & selves there & Judy. Mother gave me fruit. Lin v. late in for dinner.
Saturday 30 August. Mrs Orchardson tennis 4-7 o/c. Cobweb tried in cart by Hamilton. Lin lunches at Westwood. Ju, Nurse & self cooked all morg. Contre temps avec cuiller(?) Cake great success!
Sunday 31 August. Petit ami arrive au nuit. Nurse & chicks to Church after lunch. Ju walked to Westwood, Con brought her back. Lin took long ride saw house we admired from outside. Con & Ham rode over, too seedy to see Ham. Lin with J. Abernethy heard about fly gun. Mrs C not inclined to come & help. Picture blew down in nursery & broke glass.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1884 Very wet morg. poured with rain all day. Judy left us by 11.55, L.C. & D. I stayed in bed till 12 o/c. Feel weak & washed out. Nurse kindly cooking luncheon. Girls been v. good doing their best during the inconvenience of being without cook, Mrs C. not come. Mother sent over towel horse 2 pails & can by Jarman & cheese.
Tuesday 2 September. Tilda leaves Westwood. La petite ne peut pas venir com. je l’ai attendu. Wet morg, cooler. Mother & Edg. called morg. Ham called. Jess & Con came over to tea in bath chair. Con & Lin tried Cobweb in cart went beautifully. Waters goose as usual about Cob’s hind leg. Mr & Mrs Abernethy called & Mrs McClean. Jess & Con here. Lin went to look again at Kingsgate house.
Wednesday 3 September. Fine morg. Linley rode before breakfast, Punch. Chicks go to Westwood, Lin & self dine there. Mrs Carr here for 1st day. Mrs Thornton & Rosie called & had tea. Went to sleep after lunch. V. tired. Lin & self drove to Kingsgate House (Slaters) large but dismal rather. Not over impressed. Drove to Westwood, awful pain. Mother tired. Passed chicks in fly on way. Tassel drove us home.
Thursday 4 September. Hopeless wet day. Mrs S. coming 3.15. Poured all day & much colder, had fire in drawing room. Went for ride, rode to Westwood. Mother better. Aunt Barbara there. Mrs S. loaded with toys for children. Played backgammon in the evg. Lin worked.
Friday 5 September. Lovely bracing day. Ham rode over morg. Mrs S. told me of Mrs Hutchinson’s illness. Chicks gone to sands. Mrs S & self walked to pillar box & brought 4 eggs fr. farm. Drove out with Mrs S. & Roy to Ramsgate after lunch 3 o/c. Pd books. Met dear Mother & Abernethys. Called on Mrs Hammond & Mrs Burnand. Went & had tea at Westwood. Aunt 38

Saturday 6 September. Bright cool morg. Chicks gone to sands for day if remains fine. Poured in torrents all day, fire in drawing room. Had ordered carriage but cannot go, so have only had it once this week. Lin went for ride evg. V. cozy in drawing room. Played game with chicks.
Sunday 7 September. Lovely day. Nurse & Maud & Mrs S. to church morg. After lunch Nurse, 2 chicks & self to afternoon service. Walked to S.E.R Sta, after took us 25 mins to walk home v. slowly. 3 children christened, nice old clergyman. Ham & C. Stokes came in after tea. Lin went for long drive in cart with Waters driving Cobweb to Hammonds, Burnands, & Weigalls. Comfortable little dinner. Mrs C. cooks v. well.
Monday 8 September. Lovely day. Chicks to Margate for day if remains fine by rail. Ham & C. Stokes over on horseback, Lin goes with them 2 o/c. Not returned to lunch. Mother, A’t Barbara, Jess called, stayed some time. Mother brought fruit & veg’ts. Letter fr Judy & galoshes. Lin & self dine at Burnands.
Tuesday 9 September. Lovely day. Went with Mrs S. & chicks alone to sands. Stayed until luncheon. Nurse & Maud went to sands after. Roy & self spider hunted & played game, R v. sweet & good. Lin v. hard at work, did 2 Water Baby blocks (little elf blocks). Lady Rose Weigall called, did not come in.

Drive this afternoon & dine at Westwood. Called on Mrs Lehmann. Saw her & Liza. Took Aunty to Margate Regatta! Great crowd. Bought paint box & spade at Thomas(?). Mother returned whilst we were at dinner fr. Bristol with Minnie, Uncle better. Toys for chicks. Tassel brought us back.

Saturday 13 September. Lin & self lunch with Mrs Hammond 2 o/c. Had fly over. Played tennis in their new garden. Went over their stables, quite charmed with the way they were kept. Gen. & Mrs Someone (friend of Sir C. Keyes) & Miss Hollingshead to lunch. Lots of people to tennis, tea on lawn. Dined at Lady Rose Weigall’s. Lord Melville, Sir J. Hammond, two Miss Fanes & Orchardsons there. Pleasant evg. Dined off silver plate again. Chicks & Mrs S. to sands for day at Margate. Midge called.
Sunday 14 September. Midge taken ill last night. Maud & Nurse to Church, on sands & home late. Mr Burnand called morg. Lin & he went for ride together. Con called to say Jess was ill. Cooked morg, blancmange & jelly. Mrs Carr came in & made batter pudding. X. Maudie bitten by kitten, v. much alarmed, fracas with Nurse & finale! Tassel fetched us at 6 o/c. Dear Mother looks seedy & overwrought. Midge still in bed.
Thursday 18 September. Lovely day. Maud apparently all right. Mrs S. & self cooked all morg, enjoyed it. Don barked terribly last night, afraid someone walking about garden. Went in to Mrs S. She came to me & slept as I felt nervous. Mrs Carr just been in to say she can come till Monday 22nd Sept. Little robin redbreast flew into conservatory. 3 telegrams & p. card fr Lin. We did shop’g in Ramsgate, called on Mrs Hammond, saw them playing tennis, & I dined at Westwood. Mother v. poorly, Jess much better.
Saturday 20 September. Lin coming tnight. Had long drive to Mr Peto’s. Took Mrs Hirsch to station with Reddy, called on Mrs Orchardson. Engaged to dine at Petos 8 o/c. Had to put it off, Lin not arrived. Drove to Westwood, Carr waited for us, dined there. Lin & Ham arrived just in time for dinner, bought no horses. Lovely day.
Sunday 21 December. Dined at Mr Burnand’s. 12 to dinner, being Rosie’s birthday. Hares, a’Becketts, W. Austin, Hamonds etc. Drove in cart. Ham & Mr Burnand rode with Lin morg. Maud & I went to Church morg, Roy & Nurse afternoon. Laurence out evg. Lovely day. Roy busy after spiders as usual. Mrs Sambourne went to St. Peter’s to church, took roses.
Monday 22 September. Very wet morning! Fanny new cook coming tonight, Mrs Carr leaves this evg. Lovely afternoon. Mr Austin, Ham, Con, Mother, Aunty B & Baby came over. Lin went to Ramsgate to play tennis. Mr A had tea & went on in cart. Mrs S & self in all day. Walked with Lin to sands just before dinner. Fanny came whilst we were at dinner. All v. sleepy after.

Had fearful neuralgia all day wish I had a girl find poor Mrs S. trying to talk to. Mrs S. & chicks with Nurse to sands after lunch. Lin went to Ramsgate for tennis in cart. Linley brought Mr A & Rosie over with him, Conny took them back in buggy. Like F’s appearance but do not think she will be up to the work. Linley up to bed late.
Wednesday 24 September. Lovely day, colder. Still neuralgia headache & feel unaccountably irritable. Walked to King Street with Mrs S who walked into Ramsgate & did shopping. Lin started off in great flurry for London about horse took Moth. Bought horse! Hope it will be a success. Children went to sands. After luncheon chicks played in garden. Roy knocked nurse’s eye. Ham called. Lin had letter fr. Mother about selling property. Wrote to Judy about spoon.
Thursday 25 September. Linley came back in great heat & angry, Waters not met him at station. Children with Nurse went in cart to Broadstairs, W. could not have started early enough. Saw Carr about enormous price charged by Mrs C. Wish I had cook down fr. London. Did shop’g in Ramsgate, had carriage. Went & had tea at Westwood. Mother seedy & worried, how I wish I could help her. Ham called.
Friday 26 September. Dear Mother called with Aunty looking v. ill & worried. Mrs Tree called so only had a few moments with Mother. Asked the Trees for Sunday to dinner. Mr Tenniel’s horse & Pippin, Lin’s new horse, coming down. Arrived at 5.30. Roy & I went to see them. Walked to Sir M. Montefiore’s. Taken 2 stalls opp. site at farm for Punch & Cobweb. Lin finished work earlier – looks better. Mrs S. & Lin went to sleep till bed time after dinner. Don barked all night – nightmare!

Had asked the Trees to dinner, can’t come. Mr Austin & Rosie came to tea stayed long time. Mrs S. & self walked along fields after. Quiet evg.
Monday 29 September. Petit ami. Could not get up to breakfast. Mr Tenniel & Lin rode with Ham. Mr T asked why I did not ride. Mother called to see me with Midge morg. Baloon going up, did not go on act of rain. Mr Tenniel & Lin went into Ramsgate. Letters, one fr. dear Mother.
Tuesday 30 September. Dine at Mrs Orchardsons. Mother called after lunch with Waddie & Dora who remained to tea. I went home with Mother & had tea at Westwood. Friday 3 October. Lovely autumn morg. & day. Drove with Cobweb & Nelly to Margate in cart in 15 minutes. Walked on extension. Nelly with chicks & Nurse & self walked to sands & sat long time on shore, brought home sea water & weed. Ham & Lin went for ride together. Played bagatelle in evg. Lin did not go to sleep.
Saturday 4 October. Lovely day. Chicks to sands. After lunch chicks to sands again with Nurse & Laurence. Nelly, Mrs S. & self drove to St Peters & on to Abernethys. Did shopping in Broadstairs on way back. Carr looked v. cold. Mrs S. not v. well. Dear Mother & Midge called after luncheon whilst we were out. Quiet evening.
Sunday 5 October. Lovely autumn day. Mother fetched me & we went to Church together with flowers to dear father’s little garden, looking v. sweet & roses coming out. Mrs S. & Nelly drove in cart to church & walked back. Lin rode with Mr Burnand morg. Ham called afternoon. Nell & self walked to post after dinner. Nelly, Lin & self walked to sea by moonlight, lovely. Saw curious little phosphorous insect in water. Letter fr. Mrs Bosanquet. Splendid sermon by Vicar.

Drove in cart with Waters & Nelly to Granville, called on Mrs Tree & Mr Reeves, latter gone. “Dear little” Cobweb knocked scab off foot. Called on Mrs Burnand found her v. seedy & low. Mr Burnand came in, chaffed me about money! Nell called on Scotts. After lunch rode with Lin & Ham fr. Ramsgate to Kingsgate by sands, went too far. Pip trod on stone went dead lame. Poured with rain & came in overtired, such a pity Lin always takes me too far.
Tuesday 7 October. Wet pouring day. V. tired. First day of meet. Lin rode Pippin, Waters went on Punch. Pippin lame had to return. C’d not go to meet on ac’t of wet. Waters in late with fish. Lovely evg. No one called.

Great commotion about new horse Pip, trust all will be well. Nell & self walked into Ramsgate & pd. books. Met Mr Whitehead, asked us to tea Monday. Long walk home. Fanny walked in to Ramsgate hope she won’t be done up. Jess & Ham came whilst we were out.
Thursday 9 October. Wet dull morg. Mrs S, Nell & self going to dine at Westwood. Lin returned fr. London with Waters & followed us. Mrs S. did not go to Westwood. Had morg. room fire lighted, cold. Looked v. bright & nice. Brougham fetched & brought us back. Laurence went in to Ramsgate shop’g.
Friday 10 October. Asked Mr & Mrs Burnand & Mr & Mrs Orchardson to dinner, Mr Lockyer & Hamilton. Miserable wet cold day. Drove in to Ramsgate in fly & back 46

Saturday 11 October. Mrs Boys & 2 little girls coming to tea. Wet dull day. They did not come. Lin went up for Almanack dinner. Nell slept with me. Sore throat v. uncomfortable. Walked on sands morg. with Nell & Mrs S. Most boisterous morg, not much of a sea on. Not had carriage drive this week. Cobweb better but can’t be used yet. Lin had fly. Don’t believe in having horses, more worry than they are worth.
Sunday 12 October. Wet dull morg. Had bad night sore throat. Kittens had fits. Expecting Lin back. Lin came in time for luncheon. Nell & self walked after lunch to farm, v. dirty. Ham, Midge, Mervyn & C. Stokes came to tea. C.S. v. amusing with pennies & handkerchief. Lin’s cold v. bad. Gave him hot foot bath & grog. My throat v. painful.
Monday 13 October. If all’s well Nell & self take tea at Vicarage, 4 o/c. Very v. seedy with sore throat. Lin gone hunting. Most lovely morning. Waters as usual late & forgotten something. Nelly, Mrs S. & chicks to sands. Man came about pipes & water. Had carriage & went to Ramsgate. Called at Westwood, all out there, Nell & self had tea at Vicarage, delicious bread. Cold day. Mrs S. walked to sands with chicks morg. Lin had splendid day hunting. Ham came to dinner (illeg).
Tuesday 14 October. Dine at Mrs Orchardson’s 7 o/c. Very jolly dinner at Mrs O’s. Mr & Mrs Beasley & Mr Lockyer there. Had carriage. Jess & Ham came over in Bath chair to tea, accident met them in Westwood village, breakdown. Taking iron dust & feel better for it.

Most lovely morg, it went off dull after. Nell left at 3 o/c. Nurse, Roy & Waters went in fly with her. Mrs S. not going as a’Becketts cannot come until Monday week. Letter fr. Spencer, Ada (illeg) daily. Fanny cooked dinner v. nicely hope she may be strong enough for London. Nice quiet respectable woman. Adams going to help Emma.
Thursday 16 October. Asked Mr & Mrs a’Beckett to come for a week. A’Becketts can’t come on account of law business. Mrs Sambourne remains on a little. Lovely morg. Still no letter fr. Williams vet about “Pip”. Lin hard at work. Walked into Ramsgate with Mrs S. Pd books – heavy – sat on sands an hour & walked home, do not feel tired, think iron is doing me good, feel ever so much better. Chicks to sands morg. & afternoon. Letter fr. Mother who is at Stafford Ter.
Friday 17 October. Lovely day, dull morg. Drove to the meet in carriage, took Roy, bad cold. Nurse & Maud walked to Ramsgate with Lin’s block. Lin rode Punch to meet, Waters Cobweb. Saw Edgar on white pony. Chicks out for walk. Nurse & Maud home at 3 o/c!!! Met Mother who had called here with Jess, she is giving Maud a paletot hat & muff for the winter.
Saturday 18 October. Asked Violet Hunt to come until Wednesday, Violet arrives here at 5.5. Dine at Mother’s 7.30. Jessie’s birthday. Letter fr. Nelly & Mrs Reed. Glorious morg. Asked Lin about wood, quite ridiculous to buy, heaps in the garden. Violet, Lin & self dined at Westwood. Jess v. seedy. Mother looked v. ill & low spirited at dinner, better after. We laughed tremendously at Ham & C. Stokes cockfighting. Had brougham to return, drove in cart to Westwood.

Lin rode with Burnand & Stokes “Pippin”. Lin had fall. Mr & Mrs Evans, Rosie & Miss Bastard called. Mother sent for me, unfortunately out. C. Stokes dined here & Mr Lockyer. Lin fetched Mr Lockyer in cart. Roy looks sad, poor little tabby kitten drowned, will not let chicks have pets again until they know how to treat them.
Monday 20 October. Our wedding day. C. Stokes & Lin had sea bath before breakfast. C.S. breakfasted here. Lovely day. Mr Burnand & C. Stokes gone for ride together. Edgar called on grey gee. Edgar dines here 7.30. Violet & I walked to Westwood after lunch. C. Stokes gone. Had tea at Westwood in Mother’s room. Jess & Ham there. Edgar, Violet & I drove back in Mother’s brougham. Had good fun with Violet after dinner, awfully vain girl. Walked a little way back with Edgar.
Tuesday 21 October. Went to meet in cart, Carr drove Cobweb. Lovely day. Meet at Saar. Cobweb frightened at hounds, accident. V & self awfully frightened. After I jumped out of cart & sprained left ankle. Drove home in village cart fr. opposite. Mr Raven called & told me to use v. hot water. Chicks out for day at Ramsgate, Pippin pulled (illeg). Edgar had 3 falls. Punch went a bit lame. I went to bed early, felt tired.
Wednesday 22 October. Jessie’s little boy born at 4 o/c this morg. Violet goes up to London with Lin by 1 something. I breakfasted in bed. Mr Raven called, v. unnecessary. Mrs S. & self drove to Westwood, saw dear little baby, v. wee, cannot live. Found Mother busy feeding it in her room, it was in Dora’s doll’s cot. Mother quite in her element, Jess doing well. Friday 24 October. Lovely day. Mother came over lunch nearly broken hearted about the poor little thing. Brought me 2 little flowers, white. Jess not so well. Mr & Mrs Boys & their 2 little girls came over to tea. Lin rode after lunch. Dora & Minnie came with Mother. Poor Mother v. upset & low.
Saturday 25 October. Lunch at Mr Lockyer’s 12.30. Could not go on act. of foot. Drove & shop’d in Ramsgate & then on to Westwood. Saw Mother, Edg. & Ham. Gave me fruit for pudding. Lin rode. Dora & Minnie spent day here.
Sunday 26 October. X. Ami au matin. Lovely day. Stayed in bed breakfast. Lin rode. Mr Burnand called morg for him, cd. not go. Ham called after luncheon, Jess much better. Mervyn to Westgate. Quiet day, no one but Ham called. Lin & Mrs S. slept after dinner. Lin’s cold still tiresome.
Monday 27 October. Mr & Mrs a’Beckett com’g. Cannot come. Lovely day. Lin hunting on “Pippin”. Maud & Nurse to sands morg. Roy with bad cold. Mr & Mrs Evans dinner here, 7.15. Pleasant evg. Wednesday 29 October. Lin returns, I hope, & we dine at Mother’s. Mrs Sambourne left by the 10 o/c train. Tin box left behind. Laurence & Maud drove in with Mrs Sambourne. K. stove being done by Mrs Hutchinson’s men, came first without tools. Lovely day. Letters fr. Judy & Nelly. Went over to Westwood to lunch. Saw Midge & stayed night, slept with Mother, as wire came fr Lin to say he would not be back till tomorrow. Enjoyed it v. much at Westwood.
Thursday 30 October. Lovely morg at Westwood. Lin returned at 11.44. Accident again with cart, someone drove into Waters. Went in to Ramsgate with Mother shopping. Lunched here, boiled beef, treacle & milk puds. Ordered sack of coals fr. Denisons.
Friday 31 October. Roy & Nurse to sands, lovely day. Maud went for day to Westwood. Lin hard at work. After lunch Roy & self went in to Ramsgate, bought flowers at Peg. Bay. Went & had tea at Westwood. Jess better. Nurse out for afternoon. Brought Maud back in carriage.
Saturday 1 November. Dull morg. Chicks to sands. Judy comes by Granville. Edgar dines here. Went over garden with men opposite & Lin – 3 acres. Drove to St. Peters Cottage with Roy, met Lin there. Horrid house, damp dark & dismal. Then to Ramsgate, paid grocer’s book, got cheque changed at Syretts.

Ham’s new Irish mare “Caprice”. Lin drove over in cart. Mother sent fly for us – John! Took flowers to dear father. Jess much better, looks well but pale.
Monday 3 November. Lin & self dine at Mrs Hammond’s. Judy went into Ramsgate in cart & paid books, found I was short a pound. Lin gone to Faversham for day for hunting. Edg. & Ham gone too, started early. Lin riding Pippin, shall be glad to get him back safe & sound. Carr v. busy doing garden.
Tuesday 4 November. Dull morg, fine afternoon. Lin went on Punch to meet, Minster Rough. Lin rode Pippin after lunch. Mother called. I drove in to Ramsgate with her. Nurse out for afternoon & evg to Westwood. Ju & self put drawing room straight. Got wood with Roy.
Wednesday 5 November. Lin, Waters & horses return to London. Geraldine & I dine if all’s well at Mother’s. Paid butcher, fish, butter, flour, Grocer, bought chamber & 2 cups 1/9. Mother pretty well only. Had bad night first for 3 months.
Thursday 6 November. We all return home D.V. Dull morning. Mr Vinten & man called. Had cart, carriage & John. Judy managed everything beautifully for me. Mr Fenton had beautiful first class saloon on for us, had to have 2 mini buses more luggage. Poor Judy had bad news when she arrived – her uncle. She helped me unpack & dined here. Lin went to see Wilson Barret as Hamlet – bosh! Had bad night.
Friday 7 November. Geraldine came round for day, helped unpack & put in order. Pantry in fearful mess. Sp came in, just off to Brighton. Fanny afraid of work! I had 52

Bonvoisin called, he dined with Fildes at Arts. Lin went to “Arts” after dinner but they had gone. Lin & self walked round to see gees at stables. “Pip” has “grease” in feet, hope they will soon be better. Saw 2 maids.
Sunday 9 November. Fine morg. Went to St Georges Church with Roy, saw Violet Hunt, Lehmanns & Flossie. Maud & Nurse to Church. Lin gone for long ride won’t be back until tea time. Sent div. to Mr Rigge £3.0.0 due 1st Oct for last investment. Lin rode to Hampton Court. Mons. Bonvoisin called. Quiet evg.
Monday 10 November. Drew £1.12.0 for Shoolbred’s house bill. Went to Lord Mayor’s (Nottage) Show. Nurse, Maud, Roy & self, Waters on box. Lin rode Punch up. Great many people at Mr Bradbury’s – splendid show, excellent lunch. Came back by Metropolitan. Lin dined at Guildhall. Saw maid 5 yrs character. Miss Penn came to tea. Mrs Stone called. Maud & I dined together.
Tuesday 11 November. Miss Penn term begins, £12 the quarter. Went with Lin to Whitlocks & Offord to see carriages. Saw maid (short duration) feel v. sorry for her. Called on Mrs Sington, feel v.v. grieved for her, poor little woman. Lin & self went to see Rip van Winkle. Miss Hardman & Major Griffiths there.

Wrote for character of girl with 5 years character. Judy came & we went shop’g. Judy stayed for lunch. Little a’Becketts to tea, v. good. Met Mr A. Burnand, Marshall, Sandeman & pretty Mrs Baggaley at Watney’s. Most excellent dinner.
Thursday 13 November. Maud goes to Mrs Coward’s to tea 5 o/c. Fanny seedy, won’t be able to stay, sorry. Called on Mrs C. Hunter, Mrs Stone & Mrs Fildes, last on Mrs Curtis. Had pleasant little tea there. I had horrid neuralgia fr. cold. Dear old Punch tried in buggy. Character of E. Keyzer tolerable. Maud went to tea at Mrs Coward’s. Bob there. Another maid called, did not see her.
Friday 14 November. Fine morg. Roy called Nurse a Devil. Notice about mad dogs. Burnand’s letter to Times about his new play “Just in Time”. Shop’d morg. Took money to Judy, all out. After lunch called on Mrs Huish. Stayed ½ hour & called on Mrs Keith stayed & had tea there. Came back in cab.
Saturday 15 November. Dull day, cold east wind. Judy came helped me with marking linen. Lost keys. C. Kayzer comes tonight. Ju lunched here. Lin rode twice. C. Bergheim, Violet H, Marion Todd & Miss I called, had tea. Went out shopping v. late. Lin & self went to Stables after dinner. Cobweb returned fr Mr Tenniel. Sp. supposed to have bought him but can’t make him out. C.K came.
Sunday 16 November. Roy & I went to 9.30 service St Mary Abbots. Met Mrs Joachim. Lin gone with Waters to Mr Barker’s to lunch. Dull cold day yellowish fog. Walked over after writing letters to Mother & Conrad to Uncle Edwin’s & had tea there, love to see Uncle he is so like dear Papa. Aunty had bad cold.

Tuesday 18 November. Mr & Mrs a’Beckett dine here & go to Lyceum with us. Have fly fr. Long’s to go to above. Went shop’g morg. Marked 4 Lin’s silk handkerchiefs. Put up green curtains. Roy slight cold. Nelly came to tea. Lin awfully X about liqueurs, dinner being late owing to fish. Nurse told me about burglar.
Wednesday 19 November. Conrad & Winnie Jackson to dinner 7 o/c. They go to theatre after. Lin dines at Punch dinner. Met Miss Penn out this morning. She told me about burglar, she found windows unfastened late evg, shall look round house often now. Tabby came, stayed 2 hours. I called after lunch on Mrs Roberts, Frith, Larnack, Elmore, Barlow, Woodville, Huish & Orton. Had tea with Mrs O. & paid a long call at Mrs Barlow’s. All rest out.
Thursday 20 November. We dine at Mrs Boehm’s ¼ to 8 o/c. Went & pd. all books. Butt’s book not in. Heard of 3 cooks. Fanny still seedy, too feeble for London. Met Mrs Spofforth, walked up to Holland Pk & back of Phil Gds. Sent deposit orders for £98 to Mr Rigge for current ac’t. Am going to invest another £100 in West of Buenos Ayres debentures, 105½ this time, paid 107½ where I bought last. Drove dear old Punch in brougham for first time. Pleasant dinner. Edgar called to tea. Saw a cook.

Brougham came for me at 7, felt very unhappy to leave Mother alone. Spencer to dinner & sleep night, cozy evg, Sp in good spirits. Lin v. hard at work. Quite tired out. Laurence paid books & fetched cape fr. Nellie’s. Card case at Clara’s all right.
Saturday 29 November. Lin & Spencer went for ride together. Sp paid Lin for “Cobweb” £40. Hope he will like the dear little horse. Mother & Sp lunched here. Sp left at 2.45 going up to Scotland tonight. I drove Mother to Station & saw her off to Westwood, then went to meet Lin at Private View Piccadilly, found him after 20 mins, bother in finding carriage. Sp came in again (left shirts) before dinner. Lin went to Mr Parson’s after dinner. Mrs Mackenzie called.
Sunday 30 November. Went to early service & then took Roy to prayers at St George’s. Lin went for long ride. “Pip” still seedy with grease & cold, can’t help thinking Waters is not careful enough in stables. Mr H. Allan & W. Taylor called after luncheon. Very wet afternoon. Lin busy putting photos straight.
Monday 1 December. Miserable wet day. Went with Lin at 12 o/c in carriage to different coach builders. Lunched at “Rules”, Maiden Lane, 10/- oysters! Offord’s best carriages of all. Cozy little dinner. Lin busy arranging drawers of photos.

Clara brought back card case. Heard of place for Fanny.
Wednesday 3 December. Conrad comes up & D.V. we go to theatre taking Effie Boehm with us. Wet miserable day. Lin worried about Pip, Williams coming to see him. Edgar called just after luncheon, joined us at theatre. Sterne & Mrs McTear sat opposite to us in box. Very good play, empty house rather & unenthusiastic audience. Rec’d Bond of Western of Buenos Ayres Deb’t. £100 which I paid £106 (illeg).
Thursday 4 December. Conrad goes to ball with Mrs Boehm. Lovely sunny morning. Edgar goes too. Con out to lunch. Took Effie B. to Tattersalls, not much. Con met us there. Raining. Called to enquire after Mrs Fildes’ Baby. Effie B. came to tea. Mrs Woodville called looking lovely. Went & paid books morg, heard of another place for Fanny.
Friday 5 December. V. fine day. Lin rode Punch before breakfast. I went with Con in new brougham with “Punch” to see Mr Williams about “Pip”. Waters drove v. badly. Called on Watneys, A. Lin rode Colin Hunter’s horse.
Wednesday 10 December. New cook going, rude impertinent & lazy woman. Con going to ride with Boehms. I dine with Mother. Dear Lin worried with bills, wish he would be less extravagant with unnecessaries. So difficult to make him understand absolute necessity. Lin & self went to Bath Hotel together, found Mother & Jess v. poorly. Felt depressed & quiet myself, worried with cook. Pippin going to be re-shod at Williams. Con leaves us.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1884 We dine at Mrs Stone’s 7.30. Lovely day. Maids all down late. Met Hares, Abbey & Mr Pulley at Stones. Don’t like Pulley not a man of nice feeling or wd. have said something kind & graceful about dearest father. Mrs H. looking beautiful. Went by omnibus to see Mother, Midge v. seedy. Waters fetched me. Brougham took us to Stones. I walked back with Laurence. Pippin returned.
Friday 12 December. Lovely day. Lin rode “Pippin” goes well but a bit favours the bad foot. Wretchedly wet afternoon. Drove to Dudley Gallery with books. Called on Mrs W. Agnew & then to Bath Hotel, sent carriage back. Waters very uncertain driver undecided like himself. Ham, Jess, Mother & Judy at Bath, returned in omnibus with Judy. Very late dinner, ¼ to 10. Tremendous dreams.
Saturday 13 December. Went shop’g with Roy, bought blk dress for Nurse, whip for Roy for Don. Met Mrs Orton & Gaston. Great commotion about poor Gen. Boche, heaps of men there. Lin rode morg, played tennis all afternoon. Mother came in after lunch for 2 moments, brought pineapple. Mrs Mackenzie came after lunch. Roy lent me 2/- for palm. Fuss about it. Mrs Stone coming to dinner. Dream of dear father this morg. Mrs Stone, Lin & self only to dinner, quiet evg.
Sunday 14 December. Went to early service. Chicks to church with Nurse. Lin riding morning.
Monday 15 December. Nelly comes 11.30 to help me with shopping for Xmas. Wet morning. Went with Nelly to Stores bought fish, fowl etc. Crowded. Cd. get nothing we wanted. Nelly spent day here. Mrs Hunt called.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1884 We dine at Mrs Pigeons, Putney Hill. Punch dinner so cannot go to Pigeons. Went with Judy & Maud morg. to Shoolbreds. V. crowded. Took Maud in carriage bought gloves, pt. dress, 2 little stands, paper cutter, card case. 2 Lehmanns & Effie remained dinner. Punch dinner.
Wednesday 17 December. X. Petit ami 4 jours en avance. Go to see little Tom Worth at Yorkshire Soc. School, Westminster Bridge Rd. Spencer arrived (illeg). Went with Sp to Bath Hotel in cab, bad horse. Stayed with Mother & went with them both to Harvey & Nicolls, shopped in Sloane Street. Came in Mother’s fly to Kensington, felt cold & tired. After lunch to Price’s. One of them went with me to Victoria Station & then to Yorkshire School. Nice little boy Tom Worth. Spencer came to sleep here & dinner.
Thursday 18 December. Mrs George Drabble’s dance 8.30. Mrs Tattersall’s dance. In bed to breakfast. Nurse going shopping. Feel awfully weak. Edgar, F. Toole & McCarthy to tea. Wet evg, Lin tired. Sp in later, sent us ducks for dinner. Quiet evg, did not go to dances. Conrad came in after dinner stayed an hour & went to dances.
Friday 19 December. Mrs Boehm’s second dance. Conrad came in morg. Maud & self drove round park for an hour, Maud not v. well. Miss Penn came morg. Sp sent oysters. Sp & Lin rode before breakfast. Mr Watney & Mrs Huish called. Sp sent fruit.
Saturday 20 December. Little Cowards to tea. Wet miserable day. Letters cheques & cards fr. dear Mother. Judy called morg & evg. Lin & Sp rode before breakfast. Lin & Spencer dined with Mr & Mrs Cohen at “Bristol” & went to see “La Grande Mogale” & supped after together. I dined alone. Spencer sent me a turkey.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1884 Sunday 21 December. Sp & Lin out riding & out to lunch. Nurse to church morg. Chicks with Nurse church after lunch. Laurence out. Mr Watney called. Sp bilious attack. Cold evg.
Monday 22 December. Two Miss Huxleys lunch here. Not coming until tea. Lin played tennis & brought Miss Huxleys back. Lin rode morg. Mr Reed came to tea, brought two tickets for concert. Drove with Roy to see Mother, out, saw Jess, much better. Waters drove badly, told him.
Tuesday 23 December. Chicks went to Hospital with Miss Penn. Roy went out with me walking. Shopped, asked about cook. Spencer returned to Scotland, had dinner at 6.30. Lin worked late. Mrs Speed, Effie B, Miss Penn & Miss Frith to tea with me. Dr Orton came to see me late, feel v. weak & seedy.
Wednesday 24 December. Went with Roy to Shoolbreds at ¼ to 10 o/c. Lin out to lunch & tea. Went out walking to shops after lunch. Mrs Woodville called. Bought turkey (illeg) etc at Shoolbreds. Letter fr. Con, actually proposed to Effie. Hope no harm will come of it.
Thursday 25 December. Tom Worth coming to spend day. We dine at Mrs Boehm’s 7.30. Tom, Roy & self to St. Phillip’s church morg, Nurse & Maud also. Played with chicks after dinner. Tom tea in nursery. Beautiful cake came for Roy fr. T. Chapple. Played cards at Mrs Boehm’s. Feel uncomfortable about Con & Effie. Xmas tree at Mrs Boehm’s.
Friday 26 December. Fine bright cold morg. Walked with chicks to Miss Penn’s & to Gds after, left Sp’s photo at Mackenzies. Lin playing tennis. Maud going to Mrs Goodalls. Roy & self take her & leave birds at (illeg) Gds. Left Maud, sent 62
MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1884 birds to Hall again by Waters. Called on Burnands. All going to Drury Lane so did not see them. Roy & self had game evg. Laurence went for Maud.
Saturday 27 December. Lin rode. I drove after lunch & called on Mrs Kemp, Eykyn, Keith, Montalba, Holland. Little Anthony Woodville to tea, had crackers for the chicks. Walked morg. with Roy, pd. books. Went into Gds. Our dear friend A. Macdonald died.
Sunday 28 December. Miss Penn to tea 3 o/c. Went to early service alone, good sermon. Lin rode morg. Quiet uneventful day.
Monday 29 December. Dull foggy day. Ham & Midge coming to lunch. Cbicks out with Nurse. Ham & Midge came, left at 2 o/c, both well. Mother & Edgar in town, Edgar & Con fully engaged!!! Heard of Marion Fletcher’s baby’s arrival Xmas Eve at Carshalton. Wire fr. Spencer about poor Alex Macdonald. Very grieved, lost true friend in him.
Tuesday 30 December. Saw a cook, not strong enough. Went out shop’g with Maud & chose fancy dresses. Cold & bleak. Bought Xmas tree. Saw wedding. Lin played tennis morg. & rode before breakfast. Mrs Rainbow, Mrs & Miss Deane & Tabs, Nelly & Aunty called. V. surprised to see Tabs. Too foggy & cold to go out. Hear of poor Mr Furniss’ loss. Mother still at Bath Hotel. Punch dinner. Maud & I alone at dinner, went to bed early.
Wednesday 31 December. Mrs Tattersall’s second dance. Mrs Mocatta’s dance, small & early. Private View, Dudley Gallery. Take chicks to Covent Gd. Circus. Gentleman called about stable. Put Miss Penn off one day. Bitterly cold. 63
