Hints to remember fr. Metropole Hotel Folkeston:
Put some cold rice or tapioca which has been well boiled in rice & sugar in centre of china savory shell. Halves of peach or apricot & syrup & can be used with cream or not. V. pretty sweet.
Cut up into dice any preserved fruits, a little spirit with the syrup & put in custard cups or glass & whip white of egg with a little brandy on the top.

Tiny muslin bags with coloured ribbon in night tables with a piece of camphor in each. Footstool in Co’s. Sham lace pillow coverlets. Paper tidies for News.
Sago milk mould. Yellow cornflour, 1 pint milk, yolks of 2 eggs, white of one, sago, sugar, little or no flavouring.
Hot milk morning, Jug & cups. Boiling ones own lobsters Egg cozies to match tea cozy in colour.
Mrs. Fergusons: Macedoine of fruit served in melon with pieces of melon cut up in it.

Saturday 1 January First night of “Peter the Great” at Lyceum. In all morg. Darling little letter fr. Maudie for the New Year. Went with Lin at 3 o’c Private View Academy (of Millais collection) perfectly wonderful. Met usual P.V. friends, Fildes, Stones, Thomsons, Davies, etc etc. Walked home with Linley, bought fruit, dressed, dined & went to Lyceum. V. crowded house tremendous rception but feebly written play tho’ exquisitely staged & mounted. Supper after behind scenes, introduced to Cartright, long talk with him. Met Setons, Terrys, Threlfalls, Lethbridge & wife! Lucys, a’Becketts, etc etc. Home 2 o’c morg.
Sunday 2 January Fanny & Alice Linley to dine 8 o’c & Miss Rose Innes. Walked with Lin to Hyde Pk Corner, home by bus. Alone luncheon. Mr. Bret Harte & Mr. Heming called, most interesting talk with B.H. on recent discoveries in Honduras, he knows all that continent. Lin to lunch Garrick & tea at Athenaeum. Pleasant evg.
Monday 3 January Fog morg. Expected Miss Gill to lunch, never came. Lin & self went over Phil. Gards. house, liked it. At 3 to pay bills at cleaners & Whiteleys. Over flat, Mount St. Stores where bought Lin glasses, saw fight! Lady Margaret & Rosalind called. X. Petit ami.
Tuesday 4 January Dear Lin’s birthday. He went to Calais & we had a happy little dinner alone at 8.15. Mrs. & Miss Beddington, Mrs. Watney, Blanche Cole, Mrs. Croome (née H. Hardman) Mrs. Gordon (née Bullock) Miss Radcliffe, Lady Bergne, Mr & Miss Harvey called, & Midge. 4

Wednesday 5 January Dull rainy day. Edie Sismey to luncheon. Called at 3 on Mrs. Evans (at Cannes) Findlay, Hammond & Roger Wallace & Miss Chapman, all out. Made up my account for the year & find with Trust & Private money received £500.0.3. At last ambition reached, start another.
Thursday 6 January In bed till 2.30. Called at 3, drove with Lin first Hyde Pk Corner then on alone to Mrs. Rooth, v. pretty flat Montagu Mansions in horrid neighbourhood. To Mary Nembhard found her rampant with cold. To Elsie Hansen Walker looking sweet. Mrs. Rooth sang 4 or 5 songs to me most delightful voice.
Friday 7 January In bed until 12.30. Drove at 3 o’c called on Mrs. Sington, Mrs. Fritz, Reeve, Percy Holland, Lady Seton, Mrs. Wallace, saw Mabel & Mr Hood! Third time I have seen him there! & to Sybil Grantham. Charming house beautifully done up. He has just lost his sister so they are not supposd to be receiving. 2 letters fr. Maudie, Lennie ill.
Saturday 8 January Remained in bed until 12.30. Lin & self to Duke of York’s “The Happy Life”. V. amusing. Dorothy Baird looked v. pretty in it as heroine. Midge met us there. Went to Charbonels to tea & drove Midge home, the Mervyns dining with her. Lin & self alone as usual. Feel v. seedy & weak, was up twice during night, fearfully sick. Two letters fr. dear Maud, Lennie better but still v. weak. Hope Maud & Roy will escape influenza.
Sunday 9 January Dreary dark day. Dear Lin to Calais glad he is out of the gloom. Still feel sick & seedy generally. Only Miss Rose Innes called. Alone all day. Quiet evg. alone with Lin. He met Mr Lewis & enjoyed his day.

Monday 10 January Miss Gill comes for day. Dear Roy returned fr. Nymans& went with Gilly & self at 3 o’c to post P.O.O. books to L.C. Bank about my trust securities, & Glas & S.Western splitting of ordinary shares. To see flats & houses, none likely, & bought candelabra fr. Whiteleys. 3/6 mending.
Tuesday 11 January Lin to Calais. Had drawing room. In agony most of day with piles scarcely knew how to bear myself. Went over flats in Porchester Mansions & 14 Craven Hill Gds, both nice, but large & want much repairing. Mrs. Reynard, Mrs. & pretty Miss MacKay, Mrs. & Miss Tattersall & Mrs. Rooth called. Lin enjoyed his day & met Mr. Lewis.
Wednesday 12 January In great pain morning but went to matinée Vaudeville of “Never Again” with Lin & Roy. Saw Dr Orton on return, liver out of order & has given me some medicine. Quiet evening with Roy. Long letter fr. Maud. Lennie still v. bad with influenza.
Thursday 13 January Mrs. Steincopff’s dinner 8 o’c. Fog. Rested all day in great pain on & off. Young Pollock to dine with Roy & they went together to “Circus Girl”. Managed evg. better than I expected. Mr Knight Watson (old gentleman) took me in. V. interesting old man, accomplished french scholar. Ld C. Hamilton, Sir Howard Gordon & Lady Russell, Sir H. & Lady Bergne, Sir W. & Lady Ellis, Lady Lindsey, etc, 20 in all. Lennie little better.
Friday 14 January Lin & self dine with Miss Rose Innes at Berkeley & to see “Liars” Criterion after. Roy also. Dark fog. Rested all day feel easier. Party of 9. Mr & Mrs. Barrow (Biaritz girl, he Lady Fairburn’s nephew) Mr Gilmer, Mr. Orlebar & lovely Chillian woman. Excellent dinner & delightful piece had 2 boxes

Saturday 15 January Dull morg. Went with Roy at 1 o’c to Garrick to see “Cinderella”, pantomime. Wrong day alas. Dora & H. Langley met us there. He went on to club & we waited 2 hrs for Lin who took us on to “La Poupée” where we had lovely box & piece as good as ever. Roy, D. & self to tea with Midge after. Saw Ethel M. there, drove her to Queen’s Rd station. Lin to club. Quiet dinner alone here.
Sunday 16 January Dark fog. Lin to Calais, Roy to Club. Mr Nesbit & Mr Addison called but would not come in. Quiet dinner alone with Lin & Roy.
Monday 17 January Dora to luncheon ¼ p.12. Roy, D. & self to Pantomime “Cinderella” at Garrick Theatre. V. dull & stupid. Mr Stone came to our box,. Drove D. home & saw Geoff, Con’s boy, at Midge’s. Quiet evg.
Tuesday 18 January Lin out for cycle ride. Had drawing room. Maud returned fr. Nymns looks well but is not. Mrs. Mellor, Mr & 2 Miss Enthovens, Miss Connell, Mrs. C. Hunter called. Mr Stone & Miss Rose Innes to dinner 8 o’c, stayed till p. 12 o’c. Cracker dinner. Maud X.
Wednewsday 19 January Blanche Cole’s studio tea 5 o’c. Grace Wheat to tea. Maud in bed to breakfast. Maud, Roy & Miss Innes to “Peter the Great”. Dr Orton came.
Thursday 20 January Roy to Oxford 1st term. Sincerely hope & pray he will keep & do well there. To see houses with Maud, 2 v. nice ones Cleveland Sqre & Westbourne St.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1898 Sat with Roy packing. He dined at 6.30 & went off at 7.30. Saw Masseuse & arranged 3 times a week at 6/- ½ an hour a time for Maud.
Friday 21 January Lin & self dine at Mrs. P. Agnew 8 o’c. Mrs. Croom at home 4 - 7. Masseuse here 10 o’c Miss Mackay. Went alone over Lewis’ house, made me feel sad. Family party at Agnews, the Walters & Lockets & one other lady (single) Miss Layton & a serviceman. Charming house & beautifully ordered cooked & served dinner. Too heavy music after for my taste.
Saturday 22 January Mrs. a’Beckett Tyrrell at home 4 - 7. Went with Maud at 11 to order underlinen at Marshalls & Dickens & Jones. Lin to see furniture at Moray Lodge. Lin for bicycle ride after luncheon. Maud & self sat all afternoon working in Schoolroom. Lin to see “Julius Caesar” at Her Majesty’s, 1st night after early dinner here. Delighted with it & hope Tree will have a big success with it.
Sunday 23 January Maud to Church. Lin to Calais. Maud & self for walk alone as far as Row. Alastair Farquhar, Dora & Geoff to luncheon. Fog morg, cleared later. Evelyn C, Mr Gilmer, Mr Dyce, Rubens, Molly Farquhar, S. Rose Innes called. Lin met Mr. Forbes, Mr. Morley & dau. & many others at Calais. We dined alone.
Monday 24 January Mr. & Mrs. Croome to dinner & Conrad. Out alone morg shops & walked round the pond. Drove with Maud to stores ordered more trousseau things. The Croomes & Con stayed until 12 o’c, awfully tired. Don’t care for either, he reminds me of Mr. Blair & Furrell, v. tall.
Tuesday 25 January Went for walk with Maud to Row. Lennie came up fr. Nymns & lunched here, & went off with Maud at 2.30 to see over houses in coupé. Lin to 8

Wednesday 26 January Walked morg. with Maud after her massage. She seems better for it already. Lennie to luncheon, Maud & he off in coupé after house hunting. Maud dined there. Effie Herapath dined here alone with me, she had an awful cold. Called at 3.30 on (blank).
Thursday 27 January Maud & self took bus to Woollands ordered underlinen & walked home. Lennie to luncheon, had coupé, he & Maud went off to see pictures. I drove at 4 o’c Miss Ratcliffe, found 10/- too much charged on her account. To Mrs. Sanson. Twiss, Lewis, Dickens, both last in. Maudie at home to dinner.
Friday 28 January Walked morg. with Maud round pond. Miss Peachy came, pd. her 8/- for 4 visits. Maud went at 2.30 with Lennie & Hilda who called for her to Academy & on to dine at the Messels. I went at 4 o’c to Stores 19/4 pd. & to call on Eff at Mrs. Holland’s, lovely house & furniture. Sp. called morg.
Saturday 29 January Mrs. Walter Crane 9 o’c. Lin goes to stay at the Bedford Hotel Brighton with Mr. Hartree until Monday. Out morg with Maud in Kensington choosing lace etc for her, & flowers. Wire fr. Tabbie asking if she could come for night Monday, wired back yes! Spencer came as we finished luncheon & had absolutely nothing to offer him. Vy fatiguing about Paris Plage which is only what I expected. Maud off with Lennie & family to Barnard show & all back here to tea. Nanny, Muriel, Hilda, Lennie & Maud & then all off again. Quiet evg alone. Lady M.W’s little girl Sylvia with Nurse came, vy pretty child. 9

Sunday 30 January Maud & Lennie to luncheon with Kate Gielgud, large party. I alone to luncheon. Miss Rose Innes & Madame Trassins, & Midge called. Winnie Lockyer to dinner & Lennie. In all day.
Monday 31 January Mrs. Walkes at home 4- 7. Tabbie comes for night. Maud dines at farewell dinner to Mr & Mrs. Messel & Hilda, they leave Friday for abroad. I went alone to Mrs. W’s, saw Heilbuts, Cassellas, Tait, Young, Twiss etc. Lin, Tabs & self to Gaiety saw Lindos & Roger Walkers. Lost boa.
Tuesday 1 February Tabbie & M out shops morg. Tabs left by 3 train. Mrs. Heilbut, Mrs. Messel, Hilda, Mrs. & Miss Harley, Miss Clifford, Mrs. & Miss Huish called, 8. Lennie dined here. X. Au lit X & feel v. seedy. Lost my boa at theatre last evg. V. annoyed.
Wednesday 2 February Mr. Hemmings dinner, cannot go. Mr & Mrs. Hardy’s dinner cannot go. Lovely spring morg. Au lit. White here rebraiding shirt. Maud’s masseuse.
Thursday 3 February Mervyn & Ethel dine here. She looks too fat. In all day. Maudie to the Messels for dinner, they leave tomorrow for continent. Miss Rose Innes sent Maud lovely silver tea service, called herself evening. Mr. Gilmer sent Maud Meissoniere’s book beautifully illustrated.
Friday 4 February In bed till 12.30. Miss Peachy here. Feel v. seedy. Went with Maud to stores & Barkers, felt dead, & unable to get a boa to match muff under £7.15.0! Maddening to have lost mine. Maud dines at Sybil Grantham’s.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1898 Mr. J. Cowen’s 9.0. Lin & self go to Pyt House, Tisbury, Wilts to stay a week with Tabs & Hamilton. Winnie Lockyer arrived before luncheon to stay with Maud during our absence. Mr Rubens to dine with Maud making her small party 4. Found Mr.Guthrie & Bee Barrs at Pyt. Lovely evg, drove fr. Tisbury in open carriage.
Sunday 6 February Wet. Remained in all day. Rest went for long walk.
Monday 7 February Lovely day. Hamilton to see his new yacht “La Joyeuse”. Retn’d in time for dinner. Walked morg. with Tabs & Bee. Gwen & Evy rode to meet. I drove to (illeg) with Tabs & Gareth at 3, home for tea. Letter fr. Midge. Lin & Mr. Guthrie bicycled.
Tuesday 8 February Lin, Ham & Mr. G. out shooting. Bee & self with Tabs walked morg.
Wednesday 9 February Mr. Guthrie & Tabs to London. Lin went by 3 train. Felt a horrid cold coming on & sore throat.
Thursday 10 February Lady Romer’s at home 9.30. Mrs. G. Pollock’s dinner ¼ to 8. H. off to Cowes directly after breakfast. Wire fr. Tabs, not returning until tomorrow. Letter fr. Maud & Winnie Lockyer. Bee slept in my room, had walk after luncheon & cozy evening to bed 10.30.
Friday 11 February Letters fr. Lin, Maud & Mrs. Fritz. Quiet day, walked with Bee. Tabs & H. returned at 6 o’c, v. well.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1898 Remaining on until Monday on acount of cold & bothering cough. Letters fr. Lin, invites fr. H. Langley, Lady Quilter, Mrs. B. Partridge. Lin says dull dinner at Pollocks, took Mrs. H. Dickens in & went after to Lady Romer’s with Maud.
Sunday 13 February Packed morg. Walked after luncheon with Bee & Tabs. My cold v. heavy at night, makes me feel v. seedy & feverish.
Monday 14 February Returned fr. Tabbie’s by 11.40 train. Pd. £15 for Tab’s cape. Expenses to Pyt, Tisbury, Wells, £1.15.0. Tuesday 15 February Col. Welby’s & Mrs. Copland Griffith’s wedding day, 2 o’c. M. X, seedy. M. & self to Woollands for flowers for bonnet & hat. Lin lunched with Mr. Barr & dines with Mr. Lewis, or rather is giving a dinner to him & others. Charming service. V. crowded. Mr. Stone best man & saw to our carriage. Lovely presents, bride looked v. pretty. M. & self went to see Empress rooms after. Lady Lawrence, Miss Phillips, Burnands, Bastard & Alice Linley called.
Wednesday 16 February Go to see Mrs. Hilton 3.30. Unable to go. Go with Lin to Matinée St James of “Much Ado about Nothing” & to tea after at Mr. Guthrie’s. Tabs & H. Lennie & Maud met us there. Maud & Lennie dine at Mrs. de la Penha’s. Charming play, well done. Bored rather at Mr. G’s. Poor Lennie looking v. ill, feel v. anxious about him. Quiet evg. alone.
Thursday 17 February To Mrs. Hilton 10 o’c. Huge dirty house full of lovely & dainty things, genteel poverty personified. Met Midge & Rosa Davis returning & took them to see Empress rooms. Barkers for flowers. Lennie dining here.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1898 Maud & self dined at Lennie’s. Mr & Miss Clemens, Miss Blackwod, Miss Elton to dinner. Went on after to Matinée Theatre & saw amateur theatricals, had box for Lennie M. & self, the rest sat in stalls. V. good performance & on after to Savoy to supper. Great fun but felt v. seedy although I enjoyed it muchly.
Saturday 19 February Lin & self dine or lunch with H. Langley. Feel v. done up & seedy. Stayed in bed until 12 o’clock. Lunched alone here with Lin & went after to Pantomime. Had Mrs. Wallace, Mabel, Elsie Hansen Walker & little sister & Mary Macqueen. Lin & self dined at Langleys. Mr Bolland, Miss Heineman (who are to be married on Tues) ancient couple rather, Sir Jacob Wilson & Rosa Davis. V. good dinner. Soup, salmon, sweetbreads, roast mutton, pheasant, cabinet pudding, pears, cods roe savory. Maudie lunched & spent day with Lennie & Miss Elkin, saw them just before leaving.
Sunday 20 February Lady Rosalind Christie’s luncheon 1.30. Dr Messel asked cannot come. Wretched day rain & cold. Large party at Lady R’s. Lady Margaret Charteris, Sir F. & Lady Hartland. Mr. Wallop & another gentleman, Miss Hood & several others. V. pleasant party. Mr. Bret Harte, Mr & Mrs. Galbraith, Mr Hood called. Muriel & Lennie here to luncheon with Maud. Mr. Hemming & Lennie to dine. L. Left for Scotland at 10.30 for a week.
Monday 21 February Lin & self dine at the Jacksons 8.15. Put off on ac’t of Dan Meinertzhagen’s death. Miss White here for a week’s work came v. late.
Tuesday 22 February Miss Redcliffe & Mr. Jacomb Hood to dinner. V. cheery evg. Walked morg to Whiteleys, flowers 1/6. Maud lunched with Miss Elkin at Mrs. Messel’s. Lady Weston, Mrs. Gilbert, Mrs. Surman & Linda D, Miss Snagg, Mabel W. & Lady Margaret Watney called.

To Marshalls for lace, Redferns for stockings etc. To Sir Felix Sermons £2.2.0, cab 2/-, medicine 3/-, fare home 4d. X. Started arsenic(?) & iron treatment. Mrs. Dent called.
Thursday 24 February Promised to go to tea at Mrs. Joachim’s. Lady Rosamund Christie coming to tea here & Mrs. Geiger to tea. M & self morg to Flood St. about underlinen, Sloane St. etc. Met Lady & Miss Quilter. Maud dined at Midge’s. Letter fr. Mr. Northmore about Jarrah Wood company.
Friday 25 February Miss Peachy unable to come, bad cold. Emma to a concert evg. Emily cooked dinner, only had lobster & salad, steak, cauliflower & potatoes, caramel pudding, buttered cheese savory. Maud had Mrs. Messel’s carriage & made calls alone! I went at 3.30 to stores. Mrs. Lucy, Lady Blomfield, saw Sir A, rest out. Called for Maud & on Midge, out.
Saturday 26 February Mrs. W. Crane 9 o’c. Lord Rosebery’s at home 10 o’c. Maud lunches with Miss Elkin & goes to see “Much Ado about Nothing” after. Walked part of way morg. with Maud & to Barkers after for flowers & fruit, also Smith & Larkes for plant 2/-. Lin cycled. I walked & made calls at 3.30 on Mrs. Gale, tea there. Miss Goodenough, long talk. She gabbles rather cleverly. Cards to Mrs. Huish & Whitworth & Miss Neaves all last 3 away. Mr Stone dined here & held forth vehemently on the Welby marriage, & Northmore Spec in Jarrah Wood. Lin & M. to Lord R’s, enjoyed it immensely.
Sunday 27 February Mrs. B. Partridge 9 to 1 o’c. Mr. Marshall Hall’s dinner, postponed on account of illness. Lin to Calais. Wet. Maud & self in all day, only Mr Gilmer called. X. Petit ami.

Maud went on to tea at Lady Romer’s & dined at Westbourne Ter. with Miss Elkin. Lennie arrived fr. Scotland at 8 o’c. Had v. quiet day with Lin.
Tuesday 1 March Mrs. Boughton 5 o’c, music. Mr. Northmore & Lennie to dinner 8.30. In all day. Mrs. Roberts, Susie & Arthur a’Beckett, Mrs. Wheen & dau, Mrs. Heyworth Savage called. Maud lunched with Mr. Bainbridge. Talked till 12 o’c PM about Jarrah Wood, v. rough diamond (illeg) & feel v. doubtful of success of our rather big speck!
Wednesday 2 March To matinée “Julius Caesar” Mr. Stone & Dora with us. Mr Tree came to our box & sent us coffee & spirits! To the lovely ante room. D. back here to tea. Bee arrives on visit & Lennie to dinner. Dora came back to tea with us & told naughty little stories.
Thursday 3 March Miss Quilter’s wedding 2.15 St George’s Hanover Sqre. Lovely day. Bee went to church with us. V. crowded but v. pretty church, lovely music & hymns & no address. Saw C.Burnands, Hansen Walkers, Parish (illeg) Macquoids etc. V. pretty old fashioned dreses white satin & pink sashes designed by Macquoid. Maudie dined with Lennie at Midge’s, he saw her home. Snowed. Lin to Calais.

Met Alice Street outside & on to see Ruth Messel who arrived fr. the West Indies yesterday only with Ottie after v. bad passage. Lennie dined here. He had Maudie all day. Called also at Mrs. Lindo’s.
Sunday 6 March Lin to Calais. Maud to early service & then to Mrs. de la Penha’s with Lennie. Bee & self walked to Midge’s & back. Lennie to luncheon, dear Maudie capricious. Ham & Midge to dinner 8 o’c. Mr. Sykes, Ruth, Alice Farquhar called. Soup, salmon, fillet, fowl, salad, coffee savoy, cods roe.

Tuesday 8 March Mary Macqueen to dinner & Lennie. Maud & Bee around shops after lace, National Gall’y, Buzzards & Hamptons. I remained at home. Mrs. du Maurier, Trixey, Alice Linley & Mary Carter, Mrs. Geilgud, Mrs. Macnaught. Very cheery dinner, Mary so amusing & sang well after & Lennie! Mrs. du Maurier gave Maud a lovely drawing.
Wednesday 9 March Maud & Bee to Swears & Wells etc. I alone to Stores ordered cake, Emma & Nana’s dresses, grey alpaca, & bag. Mrs. Seligman sent 2 lovely solid silver entrée dishes. Maud dines with Lennie & large party at Westbourne Ter.
Thursday 10 March Maudie & Lennie dine at Mrs. Macqueen’s, Mary 21 today. Bee & Maud to Church about wedding being 28 April. I went to Church saw Mr. Brewer.

Saturday 12 March Bee & self to Woollands & Sloane St & walked thro’ Park home. To Daly’s matinée “Geisha” with Bee & Maud. Lin joined us later. Left Maudie for tea at Westbourne Ter. & went on with Bee to Midge’s where we had tea & then fetched Maudie who seemed in a happier frame of mind. Lennie dined with Mr. Johnstone & went to “The Bells” & we all 4 dined quietly at home.
Sunday 13 March Muriel to luncheon, never came. Bee to luncheon at Midge’s, Lennie here. Lin to Calais. I walked to Mrs. Sington’s, tragedy queen, but so sorry for her with Apple so ill. After to Rosie Burnand. Called at Mrs. Tattersall’s. Lennie to lunch & dinner. Mr. Johnstone came with him, v. intelligent man & clever.
Monday 14 March Dinner of 8, Rosie & Frank Burnand & Lennie, postp’d. Go to hear band at Palace Hotel, pouring rain. To stores, saw Maud’s bag etc with Bee. Maud interviewing bridesmaids. Called on Lady Lockwood, Mrs. Galbraith, Mrs. Twiss, had tea there, & Mrs. Dent, catastrophe forgot all about band.

Lennie to supper. Dr O. to see Maud about spots on her forehead.
Thursday 17 March Teas at Mrs. Macnaught, Mrs. Parish, Lady Flower. Out all morg. with Maud, Swears & Wells. Ordered 12 hand’s at Dickens & Jones & to see silks. Nearly dead Maud so slow choosing. At 4 o’c to Mrs. Parish, Mrs. Macnaught & Mrs. Snaggs, most charming cultured woman & so picturesque, girls v. pretty. Quiet evg. alone.
Friday 18 March Maud dines at the Messels. Lovely day. In all morg. Bee & self on foot to Lady Weston’s saw her lovely pictures & had tea there. To Palace Hotel, Mrs. Eykyns, Mrs. Woods, to Mrs. Jones stayed some time. Quiet evg.
Saturday 19 March Mrs. F. Cowen’s 9 o’c, (illeg) House, 73 Hamilton Ter. Roy returns home for Vac, comes Tuesday instead on ac’t of Exam. I shop’d alone morg. Bee & Maud (blank). We all went to see “A Brace of Partridges” at Garrick, matinée, v. amusing farce. Maud & Lennie dined at Mr. Fleishman’s Willis Rooms, & on after to Mr. & Mrs. Vertheimer’s at Long’s Hotel. Lin, Bee & self quiet evg. here. Lennie took & fetched Maud.
Sunday 20 March Mr. Macmillan dines here 8 o’c, & Sir Norman Lockyer. Bee, self & Maud for walk round Pond. Lennie lunched here. Lin to Calais. Roy arrived just after luncheon, with dog! Mr. & Mrs. Jertheimer, Mr. Henning, Mr. Ryle & Hilda who returned at 5.30 with Mr. & Mrs. Messel fr. abroad.

Effie gave Maud ivory & silver paper knife. I went alone to Mrs. Messel’s, saw Ruth & Hilda. V. cheery dinner at Midge’s.

Awful day bitterly cold, sleet, snow & piercing wind. Lin v. late with work but went with Roy to see race. Cambridge not in it, Oxford won by 14 lengths. Both boats filled with water fr. the start. Cantabs quite done up, young Goldie rowing in Cantab boat. Lennie to dinner looks fearfuly seedy & quite green. Did our invitations until nearly 12 o’c, felt dead.
Sunday 27 March Maud & Lennie lunch at Mrs. Geilgud’s (Adam). Not quite so cold but wet & damp. Lin & Roy here for luncheon, fuss about wine. Lin to Athenaeum, met Mr Weigal. Mr Rooth called & was most entertaining for 1½ hours. Mr Johnstone also but looked repulsive poor fellow. Lennie dined here, did invites after. M. & Lennie to Studios.

Friday 8 April Maudie slept with me. Had wire fr. Lin last night had arrived Guilford & had most enjoyable time, today to Winchester. Maud & Winnie to Church. M. & self did presents. Most glorious day like summer & brilliant sunshine. Lin arrived at 1 o’c at night, M. in my bed! Felt awfully tired & acute rheumatism thro’ getting hot during day.
Saturday 9 April Roy returned fr. Nymans. Lin v. angry. Harold wired to ask him to return if no urgent ap’t here. Out with Maud at 11 o’c to Peter Robinson’s to buy or order white silk shirt, & do household shopping. Lin to Club wrote letters, & found his silver cigarette case at Bath Club, left it there on Tuesday. Roy to his club to play tennis. Maudie & I sat all afternoon in schoolroom working. Wednesday 20 April In bed till 12.30. Maud out. I went to Young’s at 2.30. Maud to dentist, met her at Marshalls, saw her travelling cloak fitted, silk for hat, & met Mrs. M. Stone there. Saturday 11 June V.busy all morg. preparing Maud & Lennie’s room. Bought 3/- flowers Smith & Larke which died at once. At 4 o’clock broke record of calls in one afternoon, made 17. on Lady Lucas, Fanny Barker, Mrs. du Maurier, May Coles, Mrs. Holmes, Pollock, Tweedie, Wills, Aird, Craigie, Levy, Reynolds, Heyworth Savage, Geiger, Gale, Spofforth, 17, & got some moss roses at Aldous. Lin out all day. He met Dr Robins at Club & Turkish Bath who bothered him. X. Awful bother about 2 boxes carried down which scratched staircase.

Sunday 17 July Heavenly summer day. Lin & Roy to Sir Alfred Hickman’s. Miss Rose Innes called & remained to dinner. Stayed until 12 o’c. V. tired. Maudie at Nymans, returnes tomorrow to lunch here, & then to sleep for 1st time at her own house.
Monday 18 July Ap’t between 12 & 4 o’clock here. Saw v. pretty french girl, lived with Mrs. Critchett. Maudie lunched here, brought roses fr. Nymans. Took her to Glouc. Ter. at 5.30. Saw Lennie & his cousin. House looking v. nice.
Tuesday 19 July Maud & Len at Mrs. Heron Allen’s. Lin & self lunch at Mrs. Lucy’s 1.30 sharp. Maudie happy in her new house. Sat between Lord Wenlock & Mr. Drage. V. pleasant lunch. 16 to lunch. Mr. D, Mr. & Mrs. Woodall, Miss Thomson, Ian Maclaren etc. Mrs. Braunstein, Miss Innes & Maudie & Mrs. Terrell called. Ham & Midge to dinner.
Wednesday 20 July Mr. Bainbridge’s marriage with Miss Merryweather, St Margarets Westminster. X. Unable to go. Darling M. lunched here & went with Lin. Recep. Grafton Gal. Came here after. Lennie & M. dine at Ranelagh with Mr. Hemming. Roy & self alone to dinner.
Thursday 21 July Lord Tweedmouth called to see Lin about Gladstone Memorial & asked Lin to go to stay a few days in Scotland with him, Beauly. I had lunch with Maud 2 o’c.

Saturday 23 July Mrs. Briton Riviere’s 4 o’c. Lady Anne Blunt luncheon at Crabbet Park, 1 o’c. Lady Salisbury’s Garden Party Hatfield 4 - 7. To seedy to go to any. Lin & Roy to breakfast with Maud & Lennie 9 o’c. X. Miss Peachy for massage. Lin & Roy to Lady Salisbury’s Garden Party. Lin dined after with Lord Mayor. I took Lin’s box to Garrick, met Mrs. Finlay. To flower shop & to Ada Sp’s, out, on to see Maudie. Very seedy with chill unable to go to Mr. Hill’s, Lennie v. worried about her. Roy & self drove alone.
Sunday 24 July Miss Peachy here at 10 o’c. Went at 1.15 to dear Maud’s. Lunched & spent v. happy day with her & Lennie, found her much better. Drove to Lady Hickman 7 o’c found Roy & Lin still playing tennis there. Had long talk with Lady H. Home to 8.30 dinner. Roy rude as usual & Linley indifferent to it.
Monday 25 July Hen luncheon party at Mrs. Macnaught’s. 1.30. V. delightful. Met v. interesting women & Mrs. Threlfall & her niece Miss Richards. To Miss Thomson after, sat some time there & to Maud’s, took her to Whiteleys & home again. Roy, Mr. Hemming & Mr. Stewart dine with Maud. Lin & self to Guild Hall recep saw Mr. Yorke & lovely girl. Pictures charming. Corot, Greuze, Watteau, Courtois(?) Bougerau(?), Millet, Bastien Lepage etc.
Tuesday 26 July Roy, Lin & I dine with Maudie. In all day doing wardrobes etc. Very good dinner at Maudie’s wonderfully well waited on & served. Their boiler went wrong just an hour before we arrived but they managed so that no one c’d have told. 9 courses & all served by one maid. 42

Purchased £400 Midland def Rly stock at 92¼ with part money fr. sale of Chatham 2nd pref. Peter Robinsons, Stehrs, Midge’s, in bed with cold. Dear Maudie & Lennie to Nymans. Heavy thunderstorm.
Thursday 28 July. Kilburn Home calling. Mrs. Hooper calling 11 o’c about Roy’s clothes. £1.19.3. Rest to Con & Geof Blair. Roy to Nymans, Lennie & Maud went yesterday.
Friday 29 July V. busy. To order gown at Smythes by cab there & back. Packed.
Saturday 30 July Lin & self to Metropole Hotel Folkestone. V. large v. full. Not anyone we know but Mr. Foster & Mr. Clerihugh, last in company with Lady ? & another. Sat & talked to Mr. Gage & his mother after dinner. V. interesting old lady & knows many of our friends. She has 2 houses in Folkestone, wishes to sell one. Nana arrived to be with Emily during Emma’s absence, fortnight. Books heavy.
Sunday 31 July Lovely day. Walked directly after breakfast to harbour, took boat to Boulogne. Met H.Dickens who sat all time crossing with us, & Leslie Ward. Lunched alone at Buffet & to Cathedral & in electric tram to Casino. Sat 2 hrs on shore. Bonvoisin met us later. Dined with Leslie Ward at Hotel de Paris, v. jolly. Met Roger Wallace returning & sat with him & L.Ward & Lin all way crossing. Cab to Hotel & bed. V. happy day.

Tuesday 2 August Lovely day. Went at 10.11 fr. Central Sta with Lin to Dover took 11 0’c boat to Calais. Met Miss & Lady Jane Taylor, Mr. Gage, Bonvoisin & Dr Anderson who married Lady Agnes S. dau of Duke of B. Lady T. & Miss T. lunched at our table, Calais. Sat on sands & ret’d by 4 o’c boat. Quiet dinner & evg. Letter fr. Maudie.
Wednesday 3 August Lin went up by 4 train. Morg. blew hard Lin & self to see Folkestone boat go out. Horrid wind. Sat on terrace, much blown about.
Thursday 4 August Still v. blowey. Mrs. Hensman called & I walked to tram with her. Lonely lunch. Mrs. Gage called with Miss Peel, v. pretty girl. Mrs. G. most entertaining & theatrical. Letter fr. dear Maud.
Friday 5 August Letters fr. Lin & Maudie & Midge. Darling Maud’s birthday. Lin came down at 11 P.M. Long ac’t fr. Nana to Lin about Emilie having housemaids knees, usual wet blanket Nana, will never have her again. V. foolish to try it. Talked to Manchester lady after dinner.
Saturday 6 August Rain, blowing. Went with Mrs. Gage morg. & was vastly interested in her ac’t of her courtship with Mr. Lysart saw her dau. & heard all the family history in real dramatic style. Nevertheless feel greatly interested in her, distinctly different to any woman I have ever met. Letter fr. darling Maud. Lin wrote all morg. We walked to see Boulogne boat in after luncheon. Met Sir Blundel Maple he says Mr Bainbridge has laid himself out a nice task with Miss Merryweather, a wild headstrong girl. Her mother married 2 44

Sunday 7 August Wet cold blowey morg. Letter fr. Mrs. J. Ferguson giving us choice of 2 house parties to choose from. Too dreadful weather to attampt our proposed luncheon at Mrs. Lucy’s. Read Lin Mrs. Gage’s diary of yachting trip to Norway, & her sons letters fr. Uganda. Lin & self to Hythe in tram & back after 3 minutes stay. Sat out after dinner, cold, windy.
Monday 8 August Very wet & dull, warmer & less wind. Mrs. Berny Yeo lunched at our table, do not care for her at all, lacks tone & manners. Talked with Mr. Foster, fairly amusing. Walked with Lin on Leas saw pony & cart run away down the steep Harbour Hill, fortunately no one hurt, turned over another cart. Read to Lin while he worked.
Tuesday 9 August Lovely day. Went over to Boulogne, Battle of Flowers there & awful crowd on Steamer. Saw Santley & long talk with him & strange gentleman who sat & talked to us confidentially. Changed steamer at B. & ret’nd at once. Lunched below in dark salon & felt stuffy. Saw Mr. Pat Blair! & talked to him!! V. rough returning, most women ill, felt headachey. Om. to Hotel & tea. Sat out evg.
Wednesday 10 August V. rough day. Walked into town, bought some chemisty things.
Thursday 11 August Invite to luncheon party at Mr. Hartree’s! Lovely day, almost first day of summer. Walked with Lin into Folkestone. V. hot. Talked to 2 vy nice ladies on the Harbour Hill. Told me most of the land here belongs to Lord Radnor who was Lord Folkestone. Quiet dinner, no band Parade as Hotel off night. Lin went up by late boat train. Babbling Brooks lady spoke to 45

Friday 12 August Lovely day. Letter fr. Mr. Blair. Walked & bought ink. Sat & listened to Band Parade v. good. Met Mr. Burney Yeo. Pd. for silver box & ivory. Feel perfectly dead tired. Slept after luncheon but felt awfully tired after. Botle of Mierstein evg. at dinner. Saturday 13 August Lin goes to Mr. Wolff, Ballechin, Perthshire by night mail. Had 2 letters from him!!! None from Maud either yesterday or today. My feet awfully tender & painful. Walked into Folkestone with Mrs. Berney Yeo & called on Mrs. Critchett, out. Saw him with the 2 little girls walking. Sat & listened to Band with Mrs. B.Y. Find her vy childish & uninteresting & gauche generally. Sat out in garden after dinner. Wrote to Lin, Maud & Mr. Blair.
Sunday 14 August Lunch at Mrs. Lucy’s 1.30. V. hot day. 2 letters fr. Lin. Went in charabang. Charmingly pretty house the Lucy’s. Lunch & tea there. Mrs. L. v. nice & the sister Miss L. Mr. L. kind but odd as usual, stunted little nature. Home in time to dress for dinner. Sat out, band & piano on Hall steps. Manchester lady came & talked but felt v. lonely.
Monday 15 August V. hot. Invite to dine Wed at Mrs. Critchett’s. Called to leave affirmative answer & saw her, just as pretty & sweet as ever. Bowed to mysterious Babbling Brook lady. Comedy with our waiter. Sup’d to be turned off by head waiter but was again visible at luncheon. 4th day no letter fr. Maud.

Wednesday 17 August In bed to breakfast. Unable to dine at Mrs. Critchett’s, wrote at 8 o’c to tell her, v. sorry. Got up at 5, down at 6 evg. Talked to dull Mrs. Pitt Taylor dogmatic person like Edgar & saw Mr Berny Yeo, his wife seedy too. Sat out after dinner & to bed early. Long letter fr. Lin not sleeping well at Mr. Wolff’s.
Thursday 18 August Bright but v. blowey warm wind. Short letter fr. Maudie, seedy poor child. Sat out entire afternoon. Spoke to old lady & gentleman most uninteresting. Dr & Mrs. Berney Yeo left & host of others, their rooms filled at once. Feel better for rest & air tho’ lonely downstairs except when alone.
Friday 19 August Dear Roy’s 20th birthday. Sent him £3.0.0. Letters fr. Lin & Maud. Lin still unable to sleep after 2 o’c! Returns D.V. Sunday. Sat all afternoon with Mr. & Mrs. Coake, Norfolk people, know Airds, Sir T. Lucas, etc. To bed early. Spoke to lady like Winnie Jackson, going to India in 3 weeks with her husband.
Saturday 20 August Lovely morning, v. hot, no wind. Letters fr Maud, Conrad, Mr. Blair. Down at 12.30. Met Mrs. Burnand, Mr. F.C.B, Wilfred, Winnie & Mr. Lindley in Hall. Lunched with them. Think Mr. Burnand looking much older & v. depressed, his old genial ways gone. They left at 4. for Boulogne returning Monday. Some fête at Boulogne tomorrow. Sat until dinner with Mr. & Mrs. Croakes, or Coakes, interesting old gentleman, explained difference between Def. & pref stocks. Came & sat after dinner on steps , 47

Sunday 21 August Lin returns fr. Mr. Wolff’s. Sat with Mr. & Mrs. Coakes & Mr. & Mrs. Clementson all afternoon & well entertained. Lin arrived 4 o’c looks extremely well & better generally for his holiday. Sat out evg. together & enjoyed it muchly. Saw wonderful Meteor!
Monday 22 August Sat out with Mr. & Mrs. Coates, Mrs. Cristo Johnson all morg. Called afternoon luncheon on Mrs. Waring while Lin went to met boat & Mr. Burnand & party & Mr. Blair who came to see & to dinner at Hotel with us. Asked several times after Maud & we were v. glad to see him. He left at 9.5. Spoke to Mrs. Taylor & her v. pretty dau. Wonderfully handsome family all round.
Tuesday 23 August Cooler & cloudy. Letters fr. Midge, Susie a’B & Maud. Walked to end of Leas with Lin. Called on Mrs. Critchett & had drive with Mrs. Dumphie her mother. Saw young Mrs. D. her dau-in-law. Talked to Mr. Coakes & walked with Lin before dinner. Mr. C. came & talked to us after. V. hot.
Wednesday 24 August Dickie & self left by 4 o’c, boat train.Left my feather Boa !!! too too stupid of me. Mrs. Lucas asked me to tea.
Thursday 25 August Remained on another night with Lin at Sta. Ter. Maudie to luncheon. With her to tea at Glouc. Ter, only Nana & her little cook there. Saw Lennie, looks pale. Many more wires & changes fr. Weld Blundell. Quiet evg. at home. Emily v. poor servant.

Sunday 28 August Sat out morg. Wrote, read, talked. Had lovely walk with Con after tea thro’ park of Coates Common, watched 2 ants! & gathered quantity of nuts. Miss Rose, Miss Millican & Effie went on River. Quiet evg.
Monday 29 August Walked. Fine. Effie for cycle ride with Mrs. Jephson & Miss Rose morg. Did good deal of work & read. Letter fr. Lin. Maudie & Lennie go to Mr. Hills for a week in Kent, left Nymans this morning.
Tuesday 30 August Lovely day. Sat out, wrote etc. Went with Eff & Miss Millican to Mrs. Hayward Johnstone’s garden party. Saw Sir W. Lady & Miss Priestley there. Mrs. Jephson & Miss Rose etc. Went in wagonette & back in brougham, Con on cycle. Band, cocoa shies etc. Garden untidy I think for the number of gardeners kept.

Tuesday 6 September V. hot. Packed. Went up river with Miss M. but it was rather damp & misty. Letters fr. Lin & Maud. Lin goes to Mr. H. Weld Blundell’s today. No, goes to Lord Tweedmouth’s today until Thursday. Large party at H.W.B’s , Mr. & Mrs de Winton, Lord Lovat, 2 other lords & 2 ladies.

Came up with v. interesting girl, married, v. tall & v. lovely but not a lady. Told me much of her jewellery being stolen fr. Grosvenor Hotel & seemed overflowing with money & information.
Thursday 8 September I go to Mrs. Tate’s, Blackmoor, Petersfield, near Liss. V. hot. 2 letters fr. Lin fr. Mr. Weld Blundell’s & fr. Maud. Leave at 3 o’c Waterloo to Liss Sta. Met Mr. Tate at Waterloo & Miss Morgan who went in same carriage with me. Mrs. Tate & Daisy met us at Sta. Delightful country & Blackmoor one of the prettiest houses & grounds I have seen. Mrs. Gill (Mrs. T’s mother) Mrs. Kemp (pretty little married woman separated fr. husband with only child of 3 dying) & Miss Morgan house party.
Friday 9 September Lin wired coming tonight by late train. Fear this greatly inconveniences our host & am v. sorry. Major Trollope came before dinner for tomorrow’s shoot. Had delightful morg. Sat out & walked round grounds with Mrs. Tate & Mrs. Gill. Mr. Tate & the 3 girls for cycle ride. Afternoon drove with Mrs. Tate to call on Lady Selbourne. V. untidy house perched on side of almost perpendicular hill. Met the dau. in drive. Lady S away for day & night. Played croquet & won!!! with strong partner in Mrs. Tate. Played Battle after dinner & ignominiously lost.
Saturday 10 September Lovely day. Tried tricycle & found it much easier than bicycle. Drove with Mrs. Tate to Lady Edward Hamilton’s 12 mile drive, out. Sorry not to see inside of house it had a front door on ground floor & one on first floor most odd house being built on slope of hill. Delightful drive & talk. X. Ami.

Major Trollope told us his experiences in Africa & the West Indies, his assortment in marriage of 500 negroes! Gentlemen for cycle ride to Liphook. Lord Selbourne called. V. good looking & gracious manners. Played Camps evg.
Monday 12 September Lovely day. In bed until 10.30. Gentlemen out all day shooting. Mr. & Mrs. Boughton to tea. Did not sleep well Lin so restless, indigestion. Darling Maud with Lennie returning fr. Nymans to London today.
Tuesday 13 September Down at 12 o’c. Wrote Maud & Con. First cloudy day & cooler. Had long talk with Mr. Bendall & Mrs. Gill & afterwith Mrs. Tate. Gentlemen shooting, girls to lunch with them. Mrs. Tate, Mr. & Mrs. Bendall for drive at 3.15. I had long read & rest. Rest for drive. Played “Geisha” & other music after dinner & they all sang.
Wednesday 14 September Down at 10 o’c. & felt better. All to some smart wedding at Blackmoor Church. Mr. Bevan (nice little fair man) late Vicar came in time for luncheon & officiated. All drove after early tea to Gilbert White’s “Selbourne” & saw old Norman church. Mrs. Gill & I remained at home. 14 to dinner. Mrs. Bradwood, Mr. Bevan, Mr. & Mrs. Bendall, selves, host, hostess, Daisy, Miss Morgan, Mrs. Gill etc.
Thursday 15 September Lin & self return from Mrs. Tate’s by early train 11 o’c. Maudie lunches with us. Major Trollope ret’d with us & bought me lovely basket roses at Woking. Heard bad news of storm in Barbados where his property is, everything swept away! Found darling Maud here on arrival looking little pale. Gave me charming edition of Mort d’Arthur, Sir J. Malory’s, delighted with it. M. Lin & I dine at 7.30 with darling M. & Lennie tonight & go to theatre, Belle of New York. 52

Friday 16 September Lin & self to Mrs. Johnson Ferguson by early train. V. hot day, arrived only at 8.10 evg. Had to wait 1 hour at Carlisle & drove round town saw red sandstone Cathedral few old archways & walls some of which were built in 1100. Also Castle built by Rufus. Saw dungeons & inscriptions saying Elizabeth had repaired building during her reign, this doubtful! Mary Q. of Scots imprisoned here. Springkell v. fine house marble hall & pillars, beautiful prints. Gt. scramble into dress for dinner.
Saturday 17 September Slept well but feel tired after long railway journey. V. hot. Rested all day & feel better for it. X. Still seedy, 8 days! Home party Sir John Heron Maxwell, Lady Roxburgh, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Donner, our host hostess & son. Quiet morning & felt more rested. Worked & talked. Discover Lady R. was Sir Thomas Chamber’s dau. & met her years ago at the Bosanquets & Cottons.
Sunday 18 September Wet on & off, showers. Walked with Mrs. Donner. Find Lady Roxburgh very amusing, tells stories well & not being strong herself is sympathetic to me. Quiet evg. saw photos & talked to our host. Mr. Johnson took me in to dinner, vy nice intelligent young man. All to church except self & Mrs. Donner & Linley.
Monday 19 September Wet. All gentlemen shooting. V. cozy morg. talked & worked. Little walk after luncheon & more talk after tea. Mr. Younger arrived. Sir John Heron Maxwell leaves after dinner, & Mr. & Mrs. Hobhouse arrive.

Thursday 22 September Very busy arranging drawing room all parquéd over. Shop’d morg. flowers & fruits. Lin & self to see “Belle of New York” again, enjoyed it. No news fr. my darling, trust Lennie not ill. Letter fr. Major Trollope sending stamps. Drawing r. chairs v. nice recovered.
Friday 23 September Lovely day bright cool sunny. Put morg. room in order. Letter forwarded fr. Springkell fr. Maudie. Lennie v. ill again, feel most anxious about both. All working well here so far. Midge came to luncheon & Hamilton just as we were having tea. Tabs & H had entertained Royalties on “Joyeuse”.
Saturday 24 September Lin & self came to Dover by after dinner train most comfortable & went straight to bed on our arrival at the “Burlington Hotel”. A little disappointed to find a’Becketts en masse gone half an hour before to Ostende. Man morg. fr. Howards putting up green sun blinds in drawing room. Packed with Emilie. She seems to improve a little. V. bad indigestion hard pain on chest, no doubt hare. Midge said Tabby had entertained Austrian Ambassador & Princess (illeg) of Anhalt on “Joyeuse” at Ostende. Wire fr. Maudie Lennie better.

We both like the place & our room at Hotel is v. bright & cheery overlooking sea & little square with grass & flowers & the Pier. Met Mr. & Mrs. Lewis & Mr. Morgan who lunched with us. V. giddy set I find them. Quiet dinner at Hotel, to bed early.
Monday 26 September Postcard fr. Ruth M. Maud & L. go to London today. Lin & self for walk thro’ town before lunch, after to Castle, & was greatly interested in “Long gun” Queen Elizabeth’s pocket pistol gven her by the Dutch in 1544. Castle v. fine built in 1180. Old Norman doorway, chapel etc, ancient armour etc. Lin wrote & then another walk on return.
Tuesday 27 September Lovely morg. Out with Lin & bought 2 v. pretty Sheffield plate biscuit baskets & an old silver box. Also ordered table to be sent us when done up. Saw divers working under new pier. Lin worked after lunch & I slept! & read Secretan’s “Klondyke” v. amusing. Usual dull evg. Went out on Parade until 10 o’c & bed.
Wednesday 28 September Letter fr. darling Maud. Lennie & she go to Dundee today to stay at the Scotts. Lin & self out morg. in at 12. Lin designed 2 more lovely drawings for Lord Tweedmouth for Mr. Gladstone’s memorial. Letter fr. Lennie. Lin & self returned to London by 4 train. Left him at C.X. to go to dinner. Unpacked with Emilie. To bed early.
Thursday 29 September Letters fr. Tilda & Edgar, & my darling Maud who sent me a lovely little red enamel & pearl bracelet & heart. Long letter from my darling also. Lin & self to see “Runaway Girl”. Same grey horse going! 4 wheeler returning. Amusing piece & some good songs. V. busy all day.

Went out after lunch to Hammersmith to look for curiosity shops, without success. Read & practiced in Lin’s room. Much colder.
Saturday 1 October Lunch with Midge 1.15 & returned only in time to dress for dinner. Sat in Park with her. Felt gout in my left foot! Mrs. Head, H’s cousin called. V. handsome woman, been & still is ill but looks picture of health. Lin to see some lady about work, rather erratic lady. Letters fr. Sp. & Ada asking if they could dine here. Too busy unfortunately & Lin won’t be bothered. Asked them to come to lunch.
Sunday 2 October Lovely day but had fires. Lin off early to Dover with Messrs Guthrie, Lewis & one other. Cycled fr. there to Margate, past Westwood no longer the same. Dora to lunch & tea & lost one of her beautiful gold bangles. Linley enjoyed his day immensely & came home most cheery.
Monday 3 October Lovely day v. warm. Walked to Whiteleys, ordered fowl, failing sweetbread. To Midges & had to cab home so late. Silver & glass afternoon. Letters fr. darling M. Tabs, long one! & Dora about her bracelet!
Tuesday 4 October Busy morg. Letter fr. darling Maud. Harris, to measure curtains & estimate. Nash’s man to put up glass in Roy’s room. Private view New Gallery. Daisy Robertson came at 3.45 took her in cab. Saw Mrs. Priestley, Ratcliffe, P. Spiers, Furniss etc there, 2 de la Penhas. Ada Sp met us there. Daisy to tea here after. Spencer called. Quiet evg, Lin v. busy.

Thursday 6 October Went with Miss Gill to do morning room cabinets, took us all day fr. 9.30 until 5 o’c tea. Mrs. Pritchard (Maud’s caretaker) here for day to help with stair carpets & brass. X. E. Harris, new parlourmaid came. Lin at work all day.
Friday 7 October Go early about rating of stable, Miss Gill with me. Got them lowered. Went before committee at Town Hall. Ordered M. boa £2.50 at Barkers & sent it by P.P. by Otley to Princes Hotel. Wire later fr. M. She & Lennie at Royal instead. To Redmaynes & Libertys. Dined at 9.30. Difficult with new maid.
Saturday 8 October Box for “Greek Slave” matinée. Miss G. & self in to Kensington shops. Put drawing room straight for cleaning. Miss G. mended Venetian glass whilst I wrote to Maudie. To Greek Slave in omnibus, had huge box. V. agreeable afternoon, music & dresses ditto. Marie Tempest gagging a great deal. Lin met us or joined us at theatre, had had interesting talk with Lord Edward Cecil just back fr. the Sudan & one of the Sirdar’s A.D.C’s. Back by bus. Gilly left after tea. Dickie seedy fr. indigestion, odd, cannot imagine what from. To bed early, quiet evg. Midge sent ½ a hare.
Sunday 9 October Lin workong & in all day. Miss Radcliffe, Lady Blomfield’s sister called & stayed a long time. Sorry I did not ask her to dinner.
Monday 10 October Dear Roy returned at 5 o’c from the Messels after a 10 weeks visit. Looking v. well & so good looking. V. cozy little dinner à trois. Darling Maud goes to the Manistys near Selkirk, Sir W. Scott’s country. 57

Wednesday 12 October Tilda arrived for luncheon. In bed to breakfast with sore throat & cold. Feel v. seedy & feverish. To “Belle of New York” matinée with Roy. Vy. good but Edna May not there. Harris in alone for evg. meal.
Thursday 13 October Dull morg. In bed to breakfast with sore throat. Felt v. hot & feverish during night. Roy returned to Oxford after a separate early dinner 6.30. Sorry & glad as it gets on my nerves to have him idling the precious hours away doing nothing. In all day, helped Roy pack. Read & worked v. little today.
Friday 14 October Fine bright morg. Long letter fr. dear Maud v. happy at the Manistys, seem cultivated people of taste. New maid nice little thing but absolutely no idea of keeping silver or brass. Spoke to Emilie about doing Drawing room, considers parlour maid’s work too heavy to do well & properly. Miss White here. Dined at 8.15. 4 courses too short, won’t do it again. Tea at Midge’s, Mrs. Raikes, Mrs. Dewar & another. To 27 saw Nana. Called Mrs. Messel, shop’d Whiteley & pd. few bills. Ordered hat (illeg).
Saturday 15 October Wretched dull day. Tilda taken my cold & sneezing all day, shan’t forgive her if Lin gets it. Morg. T. & self mended china, worked & cleaned brass. Harris gone to see doctor. Emilie doing drawing room. Lin out to lunch & tea. Tilda & self to order fruit & flowers our g. g’s. & to the Tate Gallery. V. fine collection, must go again. Beautiful building. Monday 17 October X. Ami au soir. With Tilda morg. to Mrs. Roberts about housemaid for Maud. Met Mrs. F.C.B. & Mary in Om. Saw Empire sofa for £20. Afternoon to Stores ordered 4 prs stockings, elastic, sewing silk, black nicks, Jap dressing gown, flowers. Letter fr. Roy for towels, dressing gown etc. Lin hard at work.
Tuesday 18 October V. wet morg. Midge’s birthday. In bed to breakfast. Darling letter fr. Maud. They return home fr. Scot. tonight. Tilda at 3 to Whiteley, Midge, Maud’s with flowers to both & send off parcel of towels etc to Roy. Fine afternoon. Otley to Euston to meet 9.30 M. & L. fr. Scotland. Mrs. Geiger & son (in Wesh Fusiliers) called. No work or reading of any kind. Lin hard at work.
Wednesday 19 October Dull wet morg. Harris not up to work, leaving at month. Better than teaching to no purpose. Drove at 3. to Whiteleys, called at Midge’s, out. To darling Maud’s, looking vy pretty & sweet, house also charmingly clean & nice. Delicious cakes for tea & pretty service. Dickie looks tired with work.
Thursday 20 October Fine sunny morg. Can see Mr. Burnand bothering Lin about work. Letter fr. dear Roy. Lennie & Maud dine here at 8. Harris leaving at month. Letter fr. Roy to Lin about his room furniture.
Saturday 22 October Letter fr. Lennie saying Dr Leadham thinks nothing alarming with Maudie, so thankful. Tilda off early to Maudie’s. Tilda received tiresome letter fr. Mrs. Corrie about washing. Rain. Damp warm morg. all complaining of unseasonable warmth but I enjoy it. Went at 3.30 with Tilda who ret’d fr. Maud’s at 3.15 to call on Sophy, out. For flowers 1/6 & to Maudie’s. Found her better, up, & busy. Had tea there. Lennie & man putting up pictures. Dear M. & L. so happy together. It makes me more thankful than words can say to see them, & he so good & unselfish to her.
Sunday 23 October Lovely day. Walked & sat in Gardens with Tilda morg. Sophy to luncheon. Lin at work all day. Tilda walked to Maudie’s with Sophy & back to tea. 13 people to tea with Maudie! Was quite knocked up after. Ruth & Hilda called here.
Monday 24 October To tea with Maud. Saw Mrs. Messel there. Maudie v. seedy & complaining of pain in old place.

Mr. Peter Reid, Mrs. Turquand, Mr. & Mrs. F.C.Burnand & selves. Tilda fr. 10 to 10.30 at Maudie’s & dined with Lennie. Maudie the same. Friday 28 October Tilda to stay with Maud, left early. I had to go & choose bed for Maudie at Whiteleys & pd. 2 bills there. To Maudie for whole afternoon, still in bed & about same. Met Dr O. morg. M. will have to be v. careful. Electric light went out suddenly as Lin was finihing drawing at 9 o’c. 2 men came, fuse too small. Harris broke glass pantry & left door & window open.
Saturday 29 October Box for Drury Lane matinée. Dora to lunch going with us & Tilda meets us there. Out morg. shop’g. Wire fr. Maudie not so well. Dora to luncheon, went to Maudie directly. After D. & Tilda off to Drury Lane where Lin joined them whilst I stayed with Maud. Low poor darling as Lennie left this morg. early for Sussex & returns Tuesday, few days shoot. Seemed better & much more cheerful. Nanny came & had tea with M. & self & Ruth. Tilda & Lin came after matinée. Lin & self drove home together, hope Maudie will be better tomorrow. Wrote & wired to Lennie. Heavy rain after 12 o’c.
Sunday 30 October Lin went to Dover. Too violent a gale to cross & got home late 10 o’c as he waited for boat train. I walked to Maudie’s & lunched & spent afternoon there. Maudie in bed. Con, Midge, Dora, Ruth & Muriel to ball. Cab home. Dined alone as Lin only arrived at 10 o’c. Maudie still v. seedy & in bed. Alice Farquhar called.

Tuesday 1 November Lennie ret’ns fr. Nymans. Lovely bright cold morg. Drove at 10.30 to Whiteleys about book. Left wild duck (one of 2 Lennie sent me) at Midge’s & to Maudie. Much better, may lie on sofa for 2 hrs tonight in her room. Lennie gets back about 8 o’c fr. Nymans. Mrs. Tuer & sis. Mrs. Turquand & Mrs. Russell called. Lin & self to Court Theatre evg. Lin out all day. Men doing creeper.
Wednesday 2 November Morg. shop’g. Afternoon & evg. at darling Maud’s, not so well again, semed feverish again. Tilda came away with me at 10 o’c, felt v. uneasy leaving Maudie. Lennie, Tilda & self dined alone. Thursday 3 November To tea with Fanny Barker at Victoria Hotel. Unable to go too anxious about Maudie. To stores morg. with Tilda home late, bought petticoat & 4 bodices, combs, & silver mustard pot for R. Burnand. Left Lin at Museum & on to darling Maud, found her not so well. Len. came in just before I left. X. Ottie had little girl at 7 o’c this morg, left cards.
Friday 4 November Bought £100 stock at 84½ of Midland pref. Out morg. To Maudie at 3. Seems a wee bit better but v. weak. Hilda sleeping the night there. Gilly at Maud’s, sat until late with her only up for short time. I left before Lennie came.
Saturday 5 Noember Lovely day. Walked to Whiteleys & pd. their bill. Also Barkers, both house ac’ts. Called at Maud’s at 3 o’c. Sat till 6.30 with her, Lin fetched me, & Lennie came in fr. cycle ride, has Roy’s cycle for a few days. Maudie 62

Monday 7 November I spent day at darling M’s. Seemed worse, so much pain fr. little F. She went off in dead faint evg. & Lennie sent for O. & insisted on Dr Fenton seeing her tomorrow, v. glad. Hilda & Ruth with her at night.
Tuesday 8 November Gilly at Maudie’s. Rosie Burnand’s wedding 11.15 St Mary’s Priory. Lovely day. Darling Maud too ill for me to go, Lin went after luncheon & came on to see Maudie after. X. Consultation with Dr Fenton & Orton. Oil ordered, why did O. not insist also on this. I spent day with her until Lennie ret’nd.
Wednesday 9 November In all morg. Answered letters etc. To darling M. at 2.30, found her pale but sems freer fr. pain due no doubt to oil. Found F. Walford there. Mabel W. came to tea & Ruth, Mrs. Messel & Miss Murdock called. Maudie at last consented to have a nurse which Dr O. ought to have insisted on fr. the first, & the oil, all waste of time. Dickie with cold starting.
Thursday 10 November Prof. Nurse Miss Brooke went to Maudie today arrived after luncheon. Mrs. Messel called looking v. nice. Maud’s parlourmaid behaved as this class generally do in time of illness. Went to Maudie at 11.30 remained till 7 o’c. Saw Lennie. V. glad to leave M. with a prof. Nurse. X. Ami 4 days too soon.

Lady Lawrence to stay. To Maudie at 3.30 feel awfully bad only stayed until 5.15. Found Mabel there. Maudie looking better tho’ still in bed.
Saturday 12 November V. dark morg. Books only £4.12.6 for week, drew extra £11 towards Whiteleys book for mattress, Roy’s tea service & cage(?). Also paid self £4.12.6 Nash’s book, fully paid up now. Thank goodness!!! Lin’s cold seems better. Lunched alone & went to Maudie, still in bed. Flowers for table 2/-.
Sunday 13 November Feel v. seedy, in all day. Lin to Calais. Mr. Bret Harte called & stayed some time, v. interesting as usual.
Monday 15 November In bed till 12.30, feeling weak & throaty as usual. New mattress arrived fr. Whiteley for our bed. To darling Maud’s at 3. Found her on sofa but terribly weak, don’t like the look of her. Sat with her till 7.15. Lennie not in. Mabel & Mrs. Bergheim to tea there also. Left flowers for Ottie & called on way home on Midge. Dickie dining with Mr. Aird, self alone. Mrs Pennefather, Ian Robertson, Gale & Gill called.
Wednesday 16 November I dine at darling Maud’s. Called at 3 on Tabs, out, left letter. Also letter to Midge. Found Maudie brighter & better. Dined there with Lennie & Nurse Milly. Maudie walking about her room & v. funny. Emma gone to see Harris’ doctor about tender mouth. In all morg.

Friday 18 November Mrs. Steincopff asked us to go today until Monday. Alas cannot again go. Out morg. shops. Walked to Angrave & tried hat. Pd. Barker pri. ac’t. To call on Effie & Con 3 o’c, away, & on Tabbie, away, & to darling Maud. Had been out!!! in bath chair morg. Stayed until 6.30.
Saturday 19 November Lin & self to Lady Lawrence until tomorrow evg. 4.55 fr. Vic. Sta. to Dorking, if Maudie better. Packed morg. E. helping to put up old curtains again in drawing room. Found large house party at Burford. Sir T. & Lady L, 2 sons & (illeg). Sir John & Lady Donnerley, Mr. & Mrs. Lawdor Brunton, Miss Bradley (Dean B’s dau.) The Japanese Minister & his wife, Mon. & Madame Kato, Mr. ? gentleman solicitor, 2 Miss Laurences, Mr. ? clergyman, our two selves. V. pleasant dinner, sat between son & Japanese Minister. V. intelligent man & handsome for a Jap, speaks English well.
Sunday 20 November Slept well but eyes hurt rather. Some ladies to Church & Lady L. To see Orchids after luncheon. Lovely evg. Sat between Sir Trevor & Mr. Freyer at dinner & enjoyed it. Dear Lady L v. kind & affectionate & stayed in my room.

Thursday 24 November Lin & self dine at Mrs. Turquand’s 8 o’c. In all day most wretchedly cold damp & horrid. Midge called. Gillie & self doing lampshade, incessant prattle. V. pleasant dinner Mrs. T’s. Mrs. H.Peto, Mrs. T, Clara & Mr. Bergheim who took me in. Mr. Clerihugh, Mr. Reed (Peter). Talked all thro’ dinner to Mr. Reed. Johnny dull.
Friday 25 November Wet & fine, generally wet. With Gillie to Stores by tram, did much there. Left Gillie at 4 o’c Knightsbridge to get flowers for Ottie 2/6. To Mrs. Messels saw Ottie & wee Jap (?) baby, Mrs. de la Penha & gauche little dau, Ruth & Hilda. To Aunt Linda’a after, looking v. depressed & low. Uncle ill.
Saturday 26 November Out morg. shop’g. Find Barkers infinitely better & cheaper than Buckle or my old g. grocer, independence. Did flowers. Dora lunched here & we went first to Duke of York’s, full, on to Prince of Wales saw “Royal Star” v. good. V. wet & left Dora at home. Lin & self alone to dinner as usual but quite lively all the same. Wire fr. Col Welby, eldest brother died this morg.

Mr. Bret Harte, Midge & Ham, Mr. Hemming & Mr. Wolff & niece called. V. pleasant dinner of 18 at Mrs. W’s, amongst whom Kendall Grimstones & dau, de la Rues, Anthony Hope etc.
Monday 28 November At 11.40 to Mr. Critchett had cist cut out of eye £2.2.0. Hurt all afternoon but not as much as I expected at the time. Quiet afternoon & evg.
Tuesday 29 November Out at 11 o’c in brougham to pay Whiteley. To Lallys shirt ac. To Mr. Hartrees to enquire, to Barkers, flowers etc. Lady Bergne, Evelyn C. Mrs. Rooth & sister, Mary Macqueen, Grace Fraser & Mabel Wallace came. Lin finishing Lord Tweedmouth’s drawing of Gladstone. Mr. D’Arcy sent 3 more brace pheasant & one hare.
Wednesday 30 November Lovely day, bright & cold. My darling returned fr. Brighton & I fetch her at 3 o’c for her ap’t at Monteith Young’s. Letter fr darling Roy sore throat hope he is better feel anxious. Lin sent off Tweedmouth drawing. V. thankful it’s over.
Thursday 1 December Darling Maud to luncheon. Drove her back & to stores, got fur boa & glasses etc. Mr. & Mrs. Galbraith & Mr. Frazer called during my absence. Lin dining with Sir Henry Thompson (coz to Mr. Medley). Dined alone.
Friday 2 December To Tabbie’s for few days to 6th. Mr. Ian Forbes Robertson’s at home 4 - 7. To Pyt by 3 o’c train. Found Bee Barrs here, Sir Walter & Lady Grove. V. handsome & amusing woman, met them when here before at her father’s Gen. Pitt Rivers. 67

Saturday 3 December Lady de la Rue’s dinner 8 o’c. Cannot go. Sat & talked morg. Lady G off to interview faulty maid & man! Talked after luncheon. Large party shooting & in to luncheon. Mr. & Mrs. Berkeley Portman came to stay. Shooters got nearly 500 rabbits besides other game. Talked after dinner Lady G. most lovely(?). Don’t care for either Mr. or Mrs. Portman both bearish in various ways. Mrs. P. evidently v. jealous & sulked with Lady G.
Sunday 4 December Walked with Bee. Left Lady Grove & Tabs talking. Portmans & Ham to Church. Sat & talked after lunch. Danced after dinner Lady G. most graceful. Sir Walter took me in final time, delightful to talk to. X. Ami, due next Thurs. Disgusting, absorbs so much time & strength.
Monday 5 December Mrs. Heilbert’s dinner 8 o’c. Cannot go. In bed to breakfast. Sir Walter & Lady Grove & Tabbie off to London by early train. Mr. & Mrs. Berkeley Portman went later. Lin out shooting with Ham. V. wet. Quiet afternoon in boudoir. Percy Wyndhams called. Tabs returned 9 o’c with cotillion presents.
Tuesday 6 December Pouring wet day, warm. In bed till 12 o’c. Bee & Gareth sat in my room some time. Undid cotillion things in 2 huge boxes from Paris after luncheon, lovely many of them. Tabs unable to go to Lady Queensberry’s, too wet. Talked & played evg.
Wednesday 7 December Pouring wet morg. Returned from Pyt by 11.45 train fr. Tisbury. Letter fr. darling Maud this morg. at Pyt & another at home evg. Lin off to Punch dinner. Usual amount of begging letters awaiting us.

Went after with Maud to call on Mrs. Geilgud & Mr. Evans & Midge & entirely forgot all about Mrs. Tweedie’s at home. Left Maudie. Lord Tweedmouth called to see Lin about drawing. Maudie & Lennie to theatre tonight.

Saturday 10 December Roy returned fr. Oxford. Did shop’g morg. Fetched Maud 3 o’c. Went to Mrs. Rooth’s, Tweedies, Nembhard & Pollocks, last 2 in. Quiet evg.
Sunday 11 December Busy morg. In. Lin hard at work altering Gladstone’s head in Ld Tweedsmouths drawing for Gladstone testimonial. Was excellent. Roy, Lin & self to luncheon. Mr. Trendell, Mr. Douglas, Will Oakes & Nipper called. Lennie & Maud to dinner, both v. well & Maudie quite in her old form. Lin bilious.
Monday 12 December Walked Barkers, pd. bill, to Whiteleys across gardens, pd. bill. Maudie came for me in open carriage at 3 so sent brougham away & went with her to call on Seligmans, Rhodes, Galbraiths, Stuarts, Turquand, & to Maudies where she expects 6 to dinner, Dora, Miss Evans, Mr. Marriott & Mr. Gilmore. Called on leaving Maud at Midge’s. Roy out dinner, Lin & self alone.
Tuesday 13 December Ou morg. in brougham 10 o’c to stores. Bought Ottie Loring silver & glass powder puff box & Lin’s handkerchiefs, & to Maud to her doctor (Fenton) lovely house & exquisitely kept. Mrs. Roberts & Dolly & Mrs. Spofforth called. Quiet evg. Lin Roy & self.

Called at 3 on Lady Romer, Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Pitt, Miss Millais, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Burnand, enquire Gen. Nembhard, & Mrs. Whean. Alone, Emilie in muddled waiting at dinner altho’ Emma also in. Loses her head.
Thursday 15 December Out 10 o’c shop’g to Sloane St. In all afternoon did evg. mantle. Lin & self to her Majesty’s, saw Musketeers v. good inded. Went & saw Mr. & Mrs. Tree after. Also saw Mrs. Chapman & Mrs. M.Stone with fair man.
Friday 16 December Obliged to clean drawing room fender so abominably dirty & brass also. Mad’lle Jacquenot called. To Stores 2.30. Paid £2.10.1 presents making already £10.11.8 for same. Saw Edgar in hansom near Vic Sta. Maudie & Lennie return fr. Pyt & have dinner party tonight.
Saturday 17 December Out shop’g morg. Flowers 1/- lace for doyleys 2/-. Roy returned in time for luncheon from Tabbie’s. In all afternoon. Roy looking v. seedy from dance etc at Pyt, great success all but Macro’ getting drunk night of ball! Roy & self sat with Lin all afternoon expecting to go to theatre evg. Unable to get places. Quiet evg. at home. Played.
Sunday 18 December V. annoyed Emilie not touched drawing room, wonder if she will ever be any good. Went for walk in Park with Roy to enquire for Mr. Hartree. Cab home. Sp. to luncheon. Lin at work all day. Quiet evg.
Monday 19 December Out all morg.stores. Lunched at Maud’s & drove with her after. Lin, Roy & self to Alhambra. Sp. & Douglas joined us there. Nearly blinded by them all smoking. Feel v. tired. 3 girls good who remained under water 4 minutes in tank. Elephant misbehaved!!! 70

Tuesday 20 December Out morg. Met Midge who walked part of way home with me. V. cold. Miss Chapman, Mrs. Maclean, Clara B & Mrs. Gielgud jnr. & Winnie Lockyer called. Lennie & Maud dined here & we all went to see Bouchier in “Brother Officers”. Saw Lady Grove with Mrs. Pat Campbell.
Wednesday 21 December Roy to dine & go to theatre with Lennie & Maud. I too seedy to go, up all night with billious attack & feel complete wreck. To stores morg. & home 2.30. Think overtired myself, to bed 8.30. Lin dined with Mr. Freyer at Indian club St James’ Square.
Thursday 22 December Fog morg. Fine after. Feel awfully seedy so sick & up 4 times during night. Box for Haymarket, unable to go. Midge, H. Dora, Lennie & Maud met Lin & Roy at our box & all enjoyed the play. Roy v. dear & sweet & seems quite happy at home. Sncerely pray & hope he is not (illeg) this unfortunate chill which makes me feel wretched.
Friday 23 December V. hot & feverish & pain. Orton came temperature over 100. Gastric chill, up 4 times in night. Darling Maud rushed in like a fairy laden with presents for everyone & looking so pretty. Going off at 12.30 to Nymans for Xmas & New Year. In bed all day. Sp. came in.
Saturday 24 December Sp. came morg. looks v. well. Dr. O. at 11. Temperature still ½ degree above normal so can’t get up. Midge sent me 2 v. charming glass vases & some lovely flowers. Edgar sent me A.B.C. card. Tabs wrote Lin & sent card with photo of Pyt. Feel v. seedy indeed & greatly miss Maud. Little brass pen tray fr. Hilda.

MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1898 Gloriously fine day. Dr. O. came early, temperature normal & may get up for dinner. Emilie v. ungrateful about last year’s dress. Feel it is hopeless gratitude fr. the Class & the less one does the better they esteem you. Had v. cheery evg. Ham, Midge & Dora here to dinner, drawing room so pretty with the approbation sofa, my new extravagant white curtains & yellow shades. Feel eyes so tired but v. pleasant day.
Monday 26 December In bed till 12 o’c. Saw Dr. O. Feel much better but weak. Lin v. busy rearranging his room, fresh furniture. Roy to Club for luncheon home to tea. Played, sat with Lin & dined at 6 o’c. Lin & Roy off to Pantomime.
Tuesday 27 December Orton came. Up at 12. Feel unaccountably weak. Midge & Dora, Mrs. H.Levy & Mr. Freyer called.. Feey v. tired & stupid & heavy. Letter fr. dear Maudie. Poured with rain & tremendous wind mid morning. Wednesday 28 December Lovely day. Up at 10.30. Maud’s maid Sykes came with lovely flowers. Lennie in town until Saturday came up at ¼ to 8 yesterday morg. means work. Emma to Pantomime with Alice matinée.
Thursday 29 December Out shops. Called at Midge’s & Aunt Linda’s, saw neither. Left books for Lennie. Quiet evg. Lin Roy & self. Emma looked completely dead after her Pantomime.
Friday 30 December Dr. O. called. Out morg. to Regent St at 1 o’c, on return home found Alice Leigh here, remained until 5. V. mad on subject of men all titled! Same on all other subjects, felt dead when she left. Lennie dined here with Lin, Roy & self. Little tiff with Maudie, left all right. Goes to Nymans tomorrow.
