Monday 20 March Lovely, sat out with Lin, still camera bothering him. Have hateful headache. Dear Lin so flurried over trifles worries me, gets so upset about nothing instead of keeping calm & quiet. Saw Stromboli, Etna & the picturesque group of islands off Sicily. Wrote Maudie bless her. Headache after lunch. Tuesday 21 March Very seedy after bad night choppy sea off the Italian coast & until we got under the lee of the Albanian & Greek coasts. The Albanian coast beautiful with its snow tip’d mountains. Unable to get up until after lunch, head too bad. Sat on deck & watched the lovely scenery. The Island of Corfu a picture of beauty with its old fort, cyprus trees & quaint houses. (more description on opposite page illegible) Wednesday 22 March Very cold on awaking fr. good night’s sleep. Going to Count Melis at 11 & spend day with them. Went ashore on steam launch found carriage waiting at Count’s, left at once for Achillian Palace. Passed Santa Decca (Holy Ten) lovely drive. Picturesque Albanians, Greek priests (Popes) women’s headdresses. Palace views. Prickly pear hedges. Lunched just outside Palace, black olives, thin maccaroni & chicken liver, parmesan (continued on loose sheet) grated over. Chicken cutlets (vy tough) sour cream cheese excellent butter & rather sour bread, oranges & nuts & a queer vy dark sweet claret of the country. Lin vy silent scarcely uttered. After drove back & had tea at Count’s. Met nephew of late Prime Minister of Corfu, also minister’s wife & sister & English Chaplain & his sister. W’d have preferred strolling into the market place. Absence of sun makes the town less picturesque than yesterday. Came on board by ship’s boat at 5 o’c. Lady Dartry, Lady Mary & Mr Villiers had to run to catch it. Lady D. had bought a silver hair pin as worn by peasant women, just what I w’d have liked, resembled a large bodkin. Lin seems livery & absolutely absorbed in his injured camera. Hoped to have got away from this hateful photograpy, it seems so much more trouble & bother to him than to anyone else & is always being lost or broken. Very amusing dinner table. Lord Mount E. did cork trick & Lin made us all laugh saying he was so fond of the Hermes statue that he kept it in his bedroom! More the tone he said it in! The Artist model who said he was sitting for the Duke of D’s legs, but the Duke says when he sees me as he would sit for his legs his self. I made a foolish remark too, that Lin got all his daily papers fr. the barber on board!

Thursday 23 March Leave for Olympia at 8.20. Arrive Katakolo at 8 o’c, uninteresting looking place. Went ahore in 4 boats packed like sardines, shore about 2 miles off. Dull grey & cilly. Took train to Olympia, changed at Purgos much time lost here. Men selling Albanian shoes with the bows perched on the top of toe! Also stamps & innartistic bunches of flowers. Walked fr. Station at Olympia to the Ruins, the wild red & purple amemones growing amongst the broken columns. Gt scramble to get luncheon (continued on loose sheet) but finally succeeded in getting small table laid in hall, at which 2 gentlemen joined us. Strangely mannered man who had travelled all over the world. As Lin was so occupied with his broken camera I walked with Sir W. Forward’s party round the ruins & was greatly interested in the different temples. The Stadium where the races were run, chariot races etc, the level of ground is all altered by the earthquakes, land slips & the inundations fr. lake & river. After luncheon which was fairly good we went over Museum which is built in classical style close to Hotel on ajoining hill. Here is the fine Praxitiles statue of Hermes, the drapery of which no photograph could ever do justice to, & the beautiful female statue of Victory which stands on a tripod column of white marble. Fine bronze foot on a pedestal alone! Then a rest with Lin on the grass outside Museum overlooking (illeg) & a country which resembles a mild Scotland without its exquisite colouring & rushing streams. The we walked back to the Station, the small vine trees looking like mutilated gooseberry bushes where are grown the grapes used for drying. A great trade is done here in currants & raisins. The place has a poor forsaken look. Men were selling little wooden jugs for 2 or 3 francs, some postcards of views & photographs. There are many flowers foreign to me, a small orange flower like a tiny dandelion but bright orange is charming. The deep violet anemones, & brilliant red, the common daisy which is twice as large as ours in England. The men selling oranges with their stem & leaves attached struck me most. Much time & patience was lost on our return journey as we had to change at Purgos. Here the vendors of shoes, stamps, bouquets & oranges filled our carriage with the smell of garlic & one feared that something more clinging might have remained! as other people were very dirty. A very nice man, an Australian clergyman who also owns a ranch he told us came & talked to us thro’ the window whilst we waited at Purgos for our engine, which certainly took its time coming. After a weary wait of an hour at least we steamed off & a wild rush for the boats took place at K(illeg) Lin & I getting into the second lifeboat which had 38 crammed into her. Here again we had to wait some time before the steam launch was ready & at last after jumping about for some time we were towed off about 7PM on a rough choppy sea but our boat rose well & only a few of those in the 17

forepart of the boat got wet. 2 ladies were soaked through & no doubt several others. We being in the stern were more fortunate & were able to sit down & dine as we were immediately after getting on board. The 3 strange men had again taken out places at table so we dined at a table in our corridor where the 2 unfortunate ladies who had been drenched dined with us. I turned in directly after & had a delicious hot sea water bath & slept soundly. Very tired as we all were. Vy glad Lin at last realised his camera hopeless in its present condition. The 2 ladies were sisters, Mrs Compton & Lady Stukeley. Friday 24 March Excellent night’s rest, up at 8.30. Very dull & grey. Very cold. Sat & read on board. Talk with Ld Dartrey on yachts. Our places again taken by the 3 men so sat between Airds & the Bath Dr. Arrived Athens at 6 o’c. Beautiful view of Acropolis as we approached Piraeus. Huge natural harbour full of ships. Hamburg American S.S. Molke by us, full of Germans & Americans. Mr Byron’s yacht ‘Rosabelle’. Also Russian gun boat & Russian yacht near us. Harbour full of ships, I counted 18 (illeg) on one side alone & a Greek gun boat. Saturday 25 March Went ashore 9.20 with Nunnerlys, took cab by hour fr. Thesium Sta. Wonderful carved sargofogi (sic), old Micene gold ornaments, vases, glass, mummies & very tired but after most delightful day returned on launch to Steamer. Tea, rested & dined. V. cold & raining hard, no sun all day. To bed early. Sunday 26 March Dull & raining. Went ashore 9.30 with the Nunnerlys. Walked fr station to Dionysus Theatre where Lin took photos, Odeion of Herod, Temple of Theseus & Acropolis, most beautiful even in the rain & grey sky which made distant hills deep grey blue. Walked to hotel, excellent lunch 22.50 dragmars, 3 for service extra, & to Station. Tried to bargain for Armenian doll. Saw prisoners behind bars pulling up their food & on board at 5. Dartrey party back again. Grotto of Pan. Klepsydra on Castle wall. Pan & Apollo. 2 modern columns. Architrave adorned with doves which (illeg) Temple of Aphrodite Pandemos. Hymettis honey mountain. Walked on deck but miserably cold & finally sat in our cabin, the only restful place as every other is crammed. To arrive Constantinople 6 o’c tonight. Thursday 30 March Poor gentleman dead, much anxiety how to be interred. Ashore at 9.30. Dragoman met us. Vy cold & dull. Went to Saint Sophia much impressed proportions but crowded.
