MARION SAMBOURNE’S DIARY 1911

Wrote Sophy & sorted papers etc. National Anthem played Casino. Clap’d ours. At 3.30 to Source, met E. & read, English clergyman talked to me. Had (blank) at Pavilion 1.25. Smart lady! always in new garments (Page pinned in) Friday 14 July. At Casino band played National Anthem & great astonishment E. & I stood up, E. uncovered whilst ours was played & they clap’d ours after. Noticed in the gardens after many people took off their hats & some women stood up when their National Anthem was played. They had not done this in the morg. “Imitation etc” but I like to see it done. Walked after to golf club. E. played one round. New arm chairs there. Walked back alone & we sat in Hotel after dinner. (page pinned in) Irish man enquiring of a horse he was looking at “Can he lep” (Leap, jump) “Sur yer honor, he’s an infallible & indelible leper” Mr (blank) “The last wolf killed in England was killed here (here being County Cork). This said to Lennie. Ld Cowdray & Lennie “I see you have some of my father-in-law’s drawings”. Ld. C. “Oh! ’ave I”. Saturday 15 July Nicolas Bosanquet engaged! Wonder what on?! Slept fairly well. Feel achey in bath & rather seedy. Le Docteur Bouloumié came early, gave me some drops to take for digestion. Had cafe au lait in my room after getting medicine chemist, 1 frc medicine. Late in to lunch. Belgian family moved to window. Smart lady’s companion still scowls. Coffee at Casino 5 cents & rested. (Page pinned in) Saty 15 July. fr 1.30 until 3 o’c. Vy hot in my room. Letters fr. dear Roy & Maudie, so glad to get them, & one fr. Mr Richardson reassuring me about money, I afraid getting short. Bought 12 post cards 50 cents. Had chocolate instead of tea at Pavilion with Edgar who had tea. Paid E. for 2 days expenses up till tonight. 2 coffees 1 frc, 2 teas 2.50, postcards 50. Very smart new arrivals, 2 pretty girls & young man both girls with exquisite pearls!!! Had cafe au lait at 10 o’c in my room. Medicine 1 fr. Sunday 16 July Chocolate in my room 10 o’c. Dull morg. Much cooler. Feel better & slept late. Walked morg. with E. between taking water, saw 2 riders & stables. Many new people. My room not done until 3.30. Sat with Edgar at 3.30 between drinks! Great crowd in colonnade. Tottie No.2 & her own special op. us! Wrote Lady Alexander, Roy, Toula, Edie & cards to Ld Rowallan (Cameron Corbet) & McLaren now Lady Aberconway on new honour. 2 frcs 30 stamps. Walked with E. after tea & chocolate Pavilion. E. & self walked after dinner & looked at rooms Etablissement. Letter fr. Maudie.
