Monday 1 January “Arabian Nights” fancy dress dance here Balcombe House. Mr Forrester, Mr Marriott, Harold, Nonie & Mrs Gibson, Ellie Ritchie & Gladys Crozier & self house party. Great success, about 80 came, dresses charming. Men looked so tall, women short in Eastern dress. Messels all came except Mrs M. vy dull & speechless as usual. Tuesday 2 January Gladys slept in my room. Harolds, Mrs Gibson & Lennie left early. Lennie slept in London. Long walk before lunch with Maud. Rested after until tea. Played bridge, no poker evening, sans argent. Wednesday 3 January Maud, Gladys, Linley boy & self called walking to enquire after Lady Frederick, better, & on to Major Talbot’s, saw them, always cheery. Roger their boy staying with Linley. Dance at Mrs Finlay Campbell, house party going but self. Maud Hansen Walker coming for night. Gatwick races. Ellie Ritchie left. Thursday 4 January Gatwick races. Maud Hansen Walker left for them with her sister. Long walk with Maud before & after lunch to Mill. Mr Marriott & Mr Forrester left. Mrs Williams called & Mrs Stansfield. Drew cheque for house books, £7.15.8 with wages, £2.15.6 without. Friday 5 January Mr & Mrs Cadogan came to stay, she arrived in time for luncheon. Walked morg. & afternoon. Booth to tea & her children & danced after. Lennie & Mr Cadogan arrived later, both look tired. Mrs C. very nice little Swedish lady. Saturday 6 January Wretched day, rained, cold. Mrs C. in bed v. seedy. Came down to luncheon. Oliver in bed with cold. Anne also slight cold. Mr & Mrs Hayworth Booth to dinner. Little Linley dined at Mrs Talbot’s. Vy seedy on return, feverish. Sunday 7 January To Church alone. Chicks in their rooms. Doctor to see little Linley, temp 102.2, in bed. Walked with Gladys morg. Sat with Anne after lunch in my room. She had tea there. Cap’t & Mrs Reed, Major & Mrs Talbot dined here. Little Linley in bed & chicks in their rooms with colds. L. Linley’s temp 103! Dr came. Monday 8 January Mr & Mrs Cadogan left. Lennie returns tonight. Dr came, little Linley better, read to him. Walked with Gladys before luncheon. Letter fr. Sp in tray asking me to dine with them Carlton Hotel 18th inst. Maud & self for walk alone, loved having her to myself. Dear chicks all better, still in their rooms. Lennie to drill & was so tired, dined 8.30. Nonie goes to Mrs Gibson’s & (illeg) to Gloucester Sqre. Thursday 9 January Fine. Dr came. Linley much better, not allowed down to lunch. Maudie & Gladys to Mrs Rake’s fancy dress children’s party 4 o’c taking the H. Booth children as ours are not well. I had walk & then sat with Linley & played at soldiers with him. Maudie v. tired evg. wish she would go to bed earlier when Lennie is away. She slept with me, loved having her. Wednesday 10 January Trant boys here to tea & games. Work girls. Maud to London for night, & going to “Peter Pan” with Lennie. Letter fr. Roy, business still slack. Chicks all three out, & seem much better. Tea all together morg. room. I took Linley for walk, Gladys with rest, whilst Fraulein rested until tea time. Gladys arranged games for boys v. cleverly & they all seemed happy & Linley showed & worked magic lantern for them. Bed 10 o’c. Thursday 11 January B.A.Pacific ord. Certificate £100. Signed by Gladys Crozier. Sent registered letter to Bank. Darling Maud returns fr. London. Florence Walford comes, no, Maud Walker. Forester & Linley after lunch. Mr F. & Maud Walker & Linley to Mrs Buckley’s dance, not home until 2 o’c! Maud, Gladys & self quiet evg. Oliver sleeps with me & Anne with Maud. Bath mistake Fraulein. Friday 12 January Spencer’s dinner at Carlton 8.15, wedding day. Ryans there. Unable to go. Dance at Mrs Reed’s tonight, all going. Bill Weigall & Mr Marriott arrived, Maud Hansen Walker here & Mr Forester. V. delightful dinner, talk, politics. Saturday 13 January Dear Oliver’s birthday. Hayworth Booths to tea. Long walk with Maud & Gladys, Bill & Mr Marriott morg. to Cottage, & Mrs Booth came with us. Mrs Booth & young Warren to dinner, danced after. To bed 12 o’c! Sunday 14 January To Church. Gladys, Mr Marriott & Mr Forester. Walked after to Mill. Bill Weigal met us & went on to Mill with us. Met Mrs Booth, looks v. seedy. Lennie to Church Parade. Maud & Linley also, 160 there. All for long walk after lunch. Chicks with Fraulein to Nymans. Monday 15 January Return fr. Balcombe. Going tomorrow instead. Gladys Mr Forrester & Bill Weigal all leave, last with Lennie early. Mr Marriott, Maud & self to Mrs Towers “at home”. Lovely old house left Mr Towers by a distant cousin, Mr Kemp of stained glass renown. Lennie came down for his Territorial drill, all v. smooth. Lennie gave me a little brass lantern for the Hall! Mr M. showed us his sketches of Holland. Tuesday 16 January I returned home by 4.21 train. Darling saw me off at Station. Dear Roy dined with me. V. full of his little Gaiety lady. Hope she will not make him unhappy. Business bad as usual. Mr Hoare is joining Roy’s firm on ½ com. Found all looking nice at home so far. Walked with Maudie to Mill morg, & thro’ wood with Mrs H.B. Wish I had known this walk for Darling Lin. Wednesday 17 January Home. Dusted Dearest’s room. Perfect gale during night & v. wet, all day too. Lunch with Tabbie who is laid up at Claridges, 1 o’c. Maudie comes fr. Balcombe today. Chicks follow tomorrow. Tabs looking lovely but v. delicate. Lunched in her salon, seems cheerful & made good lunch. Left 3.30, awful day, v. wet returning but determined to get walk. Om fr. 4

Knightsbridge, & there. Mabelle took Roy’s clothes to club, dined out. I dined alone, bed early. Thursday 18 January Emma coming for the day. Came. Helped me in Dearest’s room, needlework & carpet. I to Bank only £50 to my account, unaccountable odd signs placed fr Ex. ac’t to mine. Cannot understand it nor can they at Bank!!! Paid House duty to Mr Mayne £11.12.6. Emma 2/6, cannot give her £5 just yet, too hard up. Roy dined at home, went out directly after. Friday January 19 Shop’d morg. Foggy. Walked to Maud’s found her just starting with little Linley shop’g. Went with her, & lunched with her & walked to Ada Sp. She & I walked to Hylda’s studio. Vy cozy & nice, & home together. Ada had tea with me & remained until 6 o’c. Roy out to dinner 7 o’c. Maudie to dentist 2.30, taking little Linley. Vy cozy & warm morg room. Sent some flowers 2/3 to Nonie Messel. Saturday 20 January Out morg. shop’g. Called at Archdeacon Brooks, saw him in bed. Worked all afternoon & read morg. room. Maybelle out. Roy home to dress, he dined out, & saw Miss M. May off for New York. (Cutting glued in: Death of Florence Molloy.) Sunday 21 January Dull morg. Tooth ache, hole in back tooth cause. Cannot go to Edgar tomorrow until seen to. Tooth bad, cannot go tomorrow. For walk morg. with Edie to Maud, saw Lennie Maud & chicks at Church, St Matthias. To Sp. who walked part of way home with us. Edie lunched & had tea here. Sylvenia Rose Innes called. Roy & I dined at Maud’s. Harold, Mrs Gibson & Sir Hugh Lane there. Vy delightful evg. Carriage 2/6. Monday 22 January D.V. go to Ravensdale, Edgar, today. Cannot go. Telegraphed 8.30 am. Vy foggy. To Herbert dentist afraid to go Dr Mitchell in fog. To E. Grant after, both vy happy. To Mr Herbert 2.30. Stop’d tooth temporarily. Wrote & worked all afternoon & packed away things. Roy dined with me. Vy depressed about business & departure of Miss M. May. Telephone out of order. Tuesday 23 January Morg. out shop’g. Horrid day. Paid Water Board year’s account £5.13.0 at Campden Hill. Maudie & little Linley came to tea. Maudie looked 5

tired, wish she could have a rest like Nonie Harold. Foggy & dark all day. Roy dined out, did not return to dress. Wednesday 24 January Dull early cleared later. Through bills etc. A brace of pheasants fr. Lady Pirrie. Taking one to Sophy. Roy dines with Maud & goes to theatre with her. Finished my packing & re-arranging with Mabelle. Mrs Spofforth came in at 8.30. Vy full of letting her house. Thursday 25 January I go alone to Edgar’s by 4 o’c train fr. Kings Cross. Colder, dark, & Roy very late morg. Vy tiring journey & 4 in my compartment! 1st class . Fare first class £2.3.8 return, cab 3/- porters 1/6. Roy looking very seedy. Mabelle saw me off Kings X. Found S. & Edgar looking v. well. My room v. cozy & bright. Dear Mother’s coverlet & chair & huge fire. Friday 26 January Slept well (Ravendale). Lovely morg. Walked with Edgar morg. & sat in his room. Sophy & Edgar for ride after luncheon. No hunting for 10 days on account of Ld Yarborough’s stepfather’s death. Worked, read, & wrote afternoon. Vy restful day. Edgar looks thin but seems well, both regret leaving here. It looks lovely in winter. Saturday 27 January Walked morg with Sophy who took photographs of adjoining farm & cattle. Saw the Marshall Baby fine boy Edgar allowed milk, was a twin, the other died. After lunch walked with E & S to long drive first gate where he went off shooting taking Sophy, I to see the Marshall Baby & take it a bell. Played Bridge after dinner. Will not take coffee after dinner! Letter fr. my darling, & bills pouring in for house. Frost. Sunday 28 January Lovely morg. Views of the Alps all over my windows & fire lighted at 8 AM in my room. Vy cold but bright & sunny, hard frost. To Church alone, quite good sermon. Edgar unable to go with Sophy to (blank) Church on cycle as one of his tyres burst. E & self for walk 3 o’c. Tea 5 o’c. Peaceful quiet day. V.v. cold but sunset glorious, red & blue sunset. Monday 29 January Spencer’s birthday. Glorious morg. Slept well. Colder then ever. Ground all white & scenes of Alps all over my window. Fire 8 AM. Letters fr. my darling, & poor little Eve who is still in bed, now with inflamed vein, & cannot go to the South with H. & Tabs on Wed! Sp, Maud, Caroline etc, in Edgar’s room. V. warm & cozy. E. & S. after lunch to skate at Broxley, went on cycles. I walked to Egg cottage & gave away the 3 cracker oranges to different children. Lovely day. V. cold. Bridge & I won evg. Tuesday 30 January Not so cold. Fire 8 o’c. Letters fr. Darling, & Caroline enclosing my wool gloves. S. & E. off 10.30 to skate at Broxley & ret’d 4 o’c. Mothers meeting afternoon. All v. nicely arranged in Hall, seats & extra sofa. Sophy read one of Stocktons stories out loud & we all worked, then tea. Edgar came in at the end. After sat again in Hall, lamps, & worked & read until 6.30. Bridge. Sophy won. Water running out, can’t find where. I walked with dogs after lunch. Wednesday 31January Not so cold. Letters fr. Roy & Maudie. House books wages £5.6.8. Books £2.15.5. Sent Roy £5.0.0. Maud said he looked better, he dined Lancaster Gate. Walked alone afternoon. E. & S. with dogs shooting. Thaw set in. Edgar got a fine partridge. Bridge evg. S. & self won. Bother with water frozen in pipes. Thursday February 1 Fine. Colder. Letters fr. Toula & Maudie. Roy goes abroad today. Bitterly cold. S & E to skate at Broxley Pond after lunch 3 & returned after 5. Walked to Kirk’s farm & to valley beyond & back without dogs, they went with E & S following dog cart. Bridge evg. Wrote 5 letters. Friday 2 February Perfect blizzard at 9 o’c AM. but not much snowfall, about 3 inches. V. cold. In all morg. writing in E’s room. Vy cozy & warm there, no draughts. Hall v. draughty to write in. E. & S. again to Croxley for skating & took their tea. Letters fr. Midge fr. Hyde Pk Hotel, darling M, & Mrs Hands Lexham Gds, 18, can’t imagine who she is! asking me to tea! Walked alone & had tea alone & played bridge evg. Water pipes all right again here. Sunny tho’ v. cold & snow. Saturday 3 February Lovely morg. Letters fr Caroline, Hylda & Mrs Pohl. Snowing, hard frost. Mrs Parkinson (Squire) here to lunch & look over the house. Awful submarine accident off Isle of Wight, 4 officers & 10 men drowned. E. & S. had sleigh up with Margery harnessed to it. She plunged & refused to move forwards at first & was put in her stall trembling all over. Deep

Wrote morg. Emma, Mrs Bosanquet, Mrs Evans & Sir J. Tenniel. Walked with Edgar & Sophy over fields, crisp snow. Put up fox which ran into old garden. Glorious sunset. Hymns evg. Bed early. Monday 5 February 12 degrees frost, snow still lying. V. cold. Letters fr. my two dear children, Roy’s fr. Paris where he is at Ritz Hotel with Mr Stern. Wrote Maud enclosing Roy’s letter, & Harpers about Lennie’s book for his birthday “The Valor of Ignorance” by Homer Lea. Tuesday 6 February Miss Cole’s marriage. E. & Sophy to skate after lunch, taking their tea with them. Walked to Valley road with dogs. Saw Mrs Vessey. Bridge evg. Wednesday 7 February Thaw set in & much warmer. Snow all melting. In all morg. writing. For walk after lunch with Sophy to Mrs Vessey. Took soup, she looked ill. Cottage v. neat & clean. Her mother Mrs Jacklin & little girl there. Bridge evg. Thursday 8 February Dear Anne’s birthday. Much warmer, dull & misty. All frost gone. E. & S. hunting. Poured with rain on & off. Went for walk with dogs & saw Mrs Vessey on way back. Raining hard. E. & S. enjoyed their day’s hunting. Bridge evg. Both tired. Friday 9 February E. & S. off early hunting, an extra day. Packed morg. & mended clothes. Lady & gentleman came to look over house. I walked to end of new drive with children just out fr school. E. & S. home to tea, both enjoyed their day. Edgar had fall! Happily not hurt. Bed early. Letters fr. Midge & Darling. Saturday 10 February I return home from Ravendale by 12.20. E. & S. off early hunting. Expenses fare 1st return 2.3.8 & cabs 6.8 8

Had cup of coffee & cake & left 11.30. Both maids would like to come to me. Sunday 11 February Sta. Ter. Lovely morg, slept well. Dusted dearest’s room with Mabel. Walked to Maudie’s across Gardens. Met her at Lancaster Gate with Florence & Miss Blane (new governess). Walked a little with Maud & to lunch with her. Lennie had taken chicks to Zoo, & took Florence after to South Kensington. Dora, Major Tatton, Mr & Mrs Montmorency & Mr ? called, remained to tea. I walked to Silver St, Motor bus fr. there. (note pinned in) Sunday 11 Feby. Maud has dinner party tonight. Sir G & Lady Alexander, Bill Weigal & Mr Guthrie & Mr ? Would liked to have gone but too tired. Monday 12 February Mr Trant called & most kindly insists on seeing me off at Euston Wed to Midge’s, & fetches me. Had carriage 11o’c to Bank, forgot most important things as usual. To Barkers about blinds, painting stairs, & curtain sliders drawing room. To Dr Mitchell dentist & lunched at Maud’s. On after to see children have their dancing class De Vere Gds, greatly enjoyed it. Home in Motor. Man fr. Barkers about stairs. Alone evg. V. busy with papers. Slept v. badly. Pain. Had to get up to take oil. Tuesday 13 February Out at 11.30 with Maudie to Bank. Changed cheque £2. To Woollands bought gloves 2/11½. Lunched with Maud. Florence to see Doctor, has to go to home again for slight operation. Another worry for my Darling. Motor took me home. Packed & all ready with Mabel by 4.30. Mr Hohler came to tea & went thro’ house with me. Edie dined with me. She looks much better. Wednesday 14 February D.V. Go to Midge by 1.20 fr. Euston. Fare return 3rd class £1.6.8. Cab 4/-, porters 1/-. Mr Trant fetched me & saw me off. Quite comfortable journey. Toula met me Shrewsbury but only for 5 minutes as train ¼ hr late. Found H. & Midge well. Cozy little dinner & bed early. Letter fr. darling Roy yesterday does not seem well & feel vy anxious about him. 9

Send his letter to Maud. X. House staircase repapered. House painting started. X Thursday 15 February Wet & colder. Mr & Mrs Elton & Mrs Wynn to luncheon. Hamilton to London for racing. Midge sent Will for bet on horse. Wrote in Midge’s boudoir to Maudie, & Roy who is at Cannes, fear weather still bad there. Walked with Midge after her guests departure. Chicks down after tea & Tommy to tea. Vy good children. Quiet evening alone. Midge sore throat! Friday 16 February Dull & foggy. Feel air relaxing. Wrote morg & paid cheques. 8 letters. At 3.30 with Midge & Tommy in Motor to Ludlow Castle. Wonderful old place & round tower in centre. Must have been most imposing & only fallen into a ruin since built 1090. Tommy v. good, tea on return & Tommy with us & Baby down after, extraordinarily good children obedient & sensible. Midge & self to bed 10 o’c. Darkie much aged. Saturday 17 February Dull foggy & warm. Letter fr. Sophy. Took Tommy to find water insects & we were late for luncheon. At ¼ to 2 Midge & self to Mrs Davidson’s in Motor 40 miles. Col D. there. Beautiful old place exquisitely situated. Saw Huntsmen on hill. Shop’d Hereford returning home 7.45. Quiet evg. Sat in Midge’s boudoir wrote 4 letters. Sunday 18 February V. foggy early, lovely later & warm. Midge, Tommy, Mad’lle & self to Church. Good sermon fr. Mr Brown. Too good for so small a congregation. Sat with Waddie as bright & happy as possible in her pretty room. Tommy & Midge water sprite hunting. Monday 19 February Morg worked wrote & read. Hope dear Roy will not return fr Cannes tomorrow. House all upset by paperhangers etc at home. Letter fr. Caroline saying vy difficult to make Roy comfortable in consequence. Made calls with Midge, 4. Lady Plowden. Hamilton returned fr. London by 1.20. My train! Tuesday 20 February Went round garden with Midge morg. Walked to Keeper’s cottage after lunch with Midge. Tea billiard room. Played badminton Ham, Tommy Midge & self after tea across billiard table. Quiet evg. Bed early

Wednesday 21 February To Church morg. Took Sacrament with Midge. H’s indigestion better. Midge bad night. Letter fr. Caroline, house in awful state! Painters etc & dear Roy saying he returns next Saty or Sunday. I take tea at Lady Ripley’s, vy pleasant afternoon. Quiet evg after playing with Tommy. Thursday 22 February Rained & warmer. Long letter fr. darling Maud saying Lennie’s birthday dinner went off well. Wrote morg to Caroline sending cheque £2.2.0 week’s books, & to Miss Webster. After lunch with Midge to call on David Liddell in tiny cottage & Mrs Campbell. Home to tea with Ham & Tommy. Ham better. Played Bridge before & after dinner. David L. has lovely Raeburn of his great great aunt a Maxwell of Monreith, lovely woman. Friday 23 February Out morg with Midge & Tommy for walk. Ham left after tea for the Heber Percys for one night. Midge, Tommy & self to Clun Castle most interesting built about 1100. Saw old Norman church like St Peters Thanet but not so fine. Quiet evg. Saturday 24 February Letter fr, Roy fr Cannes, he arrives home Staf. Ter. tomorrow night. Wired Caroline to have all ready for him. Lady Ripley called & went round garden morg. Ham returned 11 0’c. Midge & self in Motor to Knighton. Called on clergyman there, saw housekeeper. Lovely drive. Played Spoof with Tommy & Bridge evg. Sunday 25 February Dear Roy returns tonight fr. Monte Carlo. Raining & dull. Letter fr. darling Maud & Caroline who is seedy. Fear (illeg) fire. Midge & self to Church. V. excellent sermon from a quite young man. Vy cold in Church. I sat with Waddie after lunch & rest. Midge & H. for walk alone. Quiet evg. in Midge’s boudoir. Cold. Monday 26 February The Great Coal Strike begins. Col & Mrs Tillotson & Cap. Fenwick come for races. Cold & dull. Walked with Midge after lunch. Poured all morg. Feel v. seedy pain round waist & back, fear chill. Col & Mrs T. arrived late, dined 8.15. Awful pain all thro’ dinner, scarcely knew how to remain at table. Went to bed 10 o’c. Slight temperature. Midge gave me fenasatine (phenacatin) & sal volatile. Slept after.

Tuesday 27 February In bed all day. Ache all over, temp 101.4. Feel hot & stuffy. Letter fr. Caroline. Roy home, looks well she says. Letter fr. Mr Hohler. House ready Friday. Midge, H, Cap F. & Mr & Mrs Tillotson to races. Midge staed with me after tea on return. Spilt my milk over bed, horrid mess. Lovely day. Midge won 10/- racing. Felt better evg. Friday 1 March Dr Darrell came morg, saw me & is giving me tonic. Saw Midge & H. also. Midge, Mrs T & Col. T. to see Mr Seton’s Nursery Garden beyond Hereford. Came back with 2 rose trees each & a Persian bulb, presents. I down to dinner, to bed after, rest to bridge. Saturday 2 March The Tillotsons left in their car 10 o’c. My pass book came. Paid £20 on B.A. Western Ext. 1915, £10 shrs 2 allotted. Ham thinks wise to take up. Letter fr. Roy, goes for week end to Edna May Lewisohn. Walked with Midge after tea. Played Bridge after dinner which we had in billiard room. Sunday 3 March Bedstone. Walked alone to Heath House to enquire after Mrs Sunderland better , saw her dau-in-law & Mr Seton, most kind. Yesterday Mr Hohler’s man started replacing pictures up stair well at home. Trains altered on ac’t Coal Strike. Shocking behaviour of Suffragettes breaking windows £5000 of damage done!!! Bridge evg. H, M & self. Wednesday 6 March Fine morg, heavy showers after lunch. Mr Ripley came about 3 new deciduous cypress trees. Midge Tommy self to Keepers Lodge morg. M. fished, T. & self boating! Thursday 7 March Midge vy seedy consequence of cold & cough. Walked morg. to meet Tommy & Mad’lle. In all afternoon. Midge’s head ached & she seemed feverish but went down to dinner. To bed early. Letters from my two dear children. Sent cheque for week £2.5.8 Caroline & £1.1.0 to Overton for my Dearest’s Garden. Friday 8 March Midge feverish & bad night. Dr Darrell came to see her, thinks she has taken influenza from me! In bed all day. I wrote & sat with her morg. Walked alone taking Darkie after lunch for an hour. Sat with Midge after. Played soldiers with Tommy ½ an hour. Saw with Waddie & again with Midge. H. & self dined alone, bed early. Midge seems better. Saturday 9 March Midge in bed all day. Dr Darrell came, says sharp attack flu, bronchial tendency. Walked along Bicknell road, took Darkie. Tommy & Mad’lle to leave by 10 to 10AM Hopton Heath for London on Monday. Sat with Midge. H. vy worried about her. Letters fr. Maudie etc. Maudie doing too much as usual, sees nothing of Roy.

Sunday 10 March Fine. Walked to Heath House. Midge bad night. In bed all day slight temp still. Dr Darrell came to see her, to remain in bed tomorrow. To start my 3rd bottle of tonic. Letter fr. darling Maud, fears paint St. Ter. too dark. Monday 11 March V. foggy morg. Little Tommy & Mad’lle left by quarter to 10 AM. Ham saw them off. They did not arrive at Euston until past 6 o’c, over 8 hours. Midge good night, no temp & much better. Dr D. came, not to get up yet. I walked to Burnt Farm, lovely afternoon, felt tired for no reason. H. vy kind & no moods. Enjoyed talk with him at lunch & dinner. Tuesday 12 March Ham goes to Cheltenham for races. His chaser Neptune III was in one of the races. Another foggy morg. Midge another bad night but looks well. Lovely afternoon. Walked to top of hill out by Garden Gate with Darkie. Glorious view of hills & valleys. Midge in bed. I had my meals alone in Billiard Room. Coal stroke going on. Wednesday 13 March Coal Strike still going on. Government appealed to the King!!! Seems unable to cope with difficulties of their own making. Walked morg & afternoon to hill back of Kitchen Garden with Darkie. Letters fr. darling Maud. Dr D. to see Midge, in morg. room but not down yet. H’s horse “Neptune IV” fell 1st jump & 5 others, 2 jockeys vy much hurt. Thursday 14 March Letters fr, Edgar & Maudie. Walked to Heath House with Darkie morg. & afternoon. Midge better but not down yet. Dr D. came morg. Hamilton returned in time for dinner. Seems to have enjoyed his visit to Cheltenham but his horse fell at first jump, was favourite, & 5 others with him. Midge dined in boudoir & to bed after. Friday 15 March Colder, sunny morg. Midge better & down luncheon but seems weak & cough troublesome. Dr D. came. Midge in boudoir for dinner, H. & self alone. Walked post office, sent off cheque £2.6.11 Caroline weekly books & to order eggs to take up Monday, 16 for 1/6. Bridge evg. H. won. Midge seems better. No progress coal strike, dearer food. Sunday 17 March For walk morg. Afraid to go to Church on account of damp. Dr Darrell came says Baby has “flu” & must be kept in bed. Midge goes down to dinner but still seems wheezy. Had talk after dinner & bed early. Monday 18 February D.V. go by train from Hopton Heath to Euston arr. 6.40. Hamilton saw me off. Felt depressed leaving, foolishly weak. Saw dear old Waddie & Baby. Train full travelling 3rd class. 3 changes Craven Arms, Shrewsbury, & Stafford. Everyone vy good tempered & patient, every comp’t crammed. M’s groom Charles met me Euston 6.40 & he took my luggage in taxi & I came in carriage. My darling met me at Hall door. (Page pinned in) Monday 18th March 1912 looking sweet in black velvet. Toula my jewelled chain & some few things set aside for her in affec’ate remembrance of our long friendship. Emma Buckingham £10 in grateful remembrance of her long service. To my dear friend F. Huth Jackson some souvenir which Maud & Roy will select in affec’ate remembrance of his great kindness. I wish the simplest funeral. No mourning carriages & only the one service at St Peter’s Church Thanet & I leave it to my children whether my body is cremated or not, & to rest next my dear Husband. I would like all my clothes linen & furs divided as Maud may think best & (as soon as possible) after my death between Toula, Edie, Nana, Miss Gill & Emma Buckingham & Florrie Blair. Maud to keep anything for herself she may care to have. Things not worth giving to these to be sent to the Church Army. Also my dear Husband’s clothes to be given to Geoff, Claude & Fitzroy & those of no use to them to Emma Buckingham, Mr Ernest Furrell (Edie’s uncle) & Waddie’s son & Beach. My dear Maud to choose some of her dear Father’s drawings for herself. I pray my two dear children’s love for each other may increase as the years go by & that nothing may ever come between them. Tuesday 30 April My darling comes over from Ireland. Rejoiced to see her but so sorry to cause so much trouble. Edie leaves for her aunts. Maudie arrived morg fr. Ireland & remained all day with me, a ministering angel as usual. Lennie & little Linley boy with her. Dr Croft Hill came twice. No reason only once he (illeg) to make arrangements about operation. Wednesday 1 May Mabelle leaves to be married 11 o’c. Mrs Reffell (Buckingham ) comes for a short time to help me. My Darling here all day doing hard work. Dr C. Hill came 10.30. 2 nurses one fr. Chartered nurses & fr. Barts & they thoroughly cleaned my room emptying everything out, scrubbing dado wall & tops. Never saw nurses do this work before! Caroline gone (Page pinned in) 1st May 1912. to wedding & away for day, cannot be helped but most awkward. Such hard work for darling Maud. Dear Roy goes to Lancaster Gate. Colder, fire. Dear Roy came & sat with me. Looks v. ill, feel anxious about him. Friday 24 May Colder. Emma did my room & stairs with little Emma. Eggs from Midge, alas 9 broken. Wrote her. Gladys to tea. Nurse to Exhibition. Emma sat with me fr. 3 to 4.30. Letter fr. my darling telling me of poor Margery Howlden’s death 20th ultimo after op for appendicitis. Tuesday 11 June Out morg 12 o’c Victoria with Nurse to Whiteleys, ordered blouse & jabot. Dr Hill came dressed my wound. Nurse to see Mrs Matthews out all afternoon. Did not sleep. Darling came ¼ to 4 looking sweet. Tabs, Mrs Bowles(?), Edgar & Sophy came, & Roy who left early to dress. Wednesday 12 June Wet. Slept badly, worried about Roy. Nurse helped me try on blouse fr. Whiteleys, none do! ./lked after. Pd 10/6 to Mr J. Herbert (Dentist). Ordered geraniums, 8, Smith & Larker. Nurse out. Darling came. Had happy time with her alone. Edgar & Midge came in D’s Lancaster, all very cheery. Mrs Joachim, Mrs Beale & Mrs Keating called, did not see them. Arm & chest still hurt. Thursday 13 June Darling drove with me ¼ to 12, met Mrs Messel & the dear chicks. Left Maudie. Dear Edgar & Sophy & Maudie came afternoon, stayed long while. Vy interested. Another £100 pd off fr. securities. Must reinvest! Friday 14 June Dullish. Tuesday 18 June Darling to lunch & drove us to Waterloo, brought thermos, fruit & basket of cakes sandwiches etc. Edgar met us Waterloo & we travelled by 3.25 1st class alone. Most comfortable journey, lovely day, so enjoyed view of country. Tabs met us Sherborne, alone there. To bed at once only arm & hand swollen v. tired & otherwise none worse. All most delightful & comfortable to even fire in room. Wednesday 19 June Slept well. Letters fr. Darling & Roy. Finer & a few showers. Out in chair. Vy happy day. Telegram fr. Maudie. First Bath! Thursday 20 June Slept well. Out for walk morg & afternoon. Slept afternoon 2 hours!!! Walked with Tabs after. Tabs to little service at 7.30. We dined at 7 o’c. (this last night, not tonight.) H, Edgar & Sophy to Church. I to little Church for prayers. After round garden gathered flowers (Nurse &Tabs) & I sat in bath chair & tied up bunches for Hospital. Very annoyed with myself. Tabbie left by early train, they go up for Eton & Harrow match. I went to Station to see Maud off by 3.20 train. Saw 3 Miss Digbys there & introduced them to Maud. Nurse & self did flowers church & walked & I sat with Tabs whilst she dressed. Rested afternoon & finished “Life of Florence Nightingale”. Rained unable to go out. Postcard fr. Sophy dear Edgar better night. Letters fr. Darling & Roy who goes to Felixtowe for week end. Sunday 21 July Letter fr. Caroline. E. w’d like to remain on. Wet & dull early. Slept well. Church with Nurse. Tabs to her Church & Bee to Abbey, Sherborne. Wish I could have gone also evg. Tabs again to Sherborne in dear little pony cart. Wish I could give such a pony & cart to my dear grandchildren. Monday 22 July Slept well. Church with Nurse, & walked all 4 of us to Lodge, little rain. After lunch read “The Seventh Son” by Reinhardt not worth reading. Nurse in an odd mood & seems put out, one of Marie’s, first she has had, perhaps her tooth cause. Tabs & Bee to Sherborne. Bee back to tea. Nurse never came in until 7.30. I hurt my arm getting my dress on & off! Wire fr. Darling about Edgar, had seen him today, better, greatly relieved. Tuesday 23 July Letters fr Pat a’Beckett, 6 Buxton Rd Weymouth, fr Sophy better news of dear Edgar & fr Ruby Walker. Sophy says they go today week to Felixtowe, so sorry as day I had fixed to return home hoping to see him before going to Maud Thursday. Quiet day. Mrs E. Gordon & her sister to lunch. Tabs out about Red X meeting. Wednesday 24 July To pay £25 balance on five (5) £10 allotted shrs in Cent Argentine 4½ % pref shrs. Good night. Thursday 25 July Woke 5.30 AM, read papers. Tabbie to Eton for day to see Gareth play & to see his lip hurt fr. a ball. Tabs did not go. Gardened. Tabs & Nurse busy with Red Cross, bandages etc. Delightful day. Friday 26 July Red Cross meeting 6 o’c. Walked morg. & read papers. Letters fr. Darling & Edgar, better but fear he suffers still much pain. X. Contact note from Bank for £100 Bolivar 6% Debs pd £105.6.6 for it bought thro’ L.C & Westminster Bank pd off from re-invested money only. Saturday 27 July Tabbie arranged Church beautifully with green brocade altar cloths & white & yellow flowers. Letters fr. Darling, Nonie M. Mabel leaving Maud. Sir Michael & Lady Westmacot, Mrs Hamilton Russell, Col. & Mrs Ridley & a man friend & a Mrs Wills to lunch. Tabs forgot to send & fetch the Westmacots who have no conveyance! Nurse went to see the woodcutter who goes to London Middlesex Hospital tomorrow. Tabs to give away prizes, Bee with her. Glad did not go, too tiring. Fraulein Rippel arrived (Saty) evg. 10.30. Maud’s & dined with me & wrote to Mr Richardson about the Cuban 5%’s. With Nurse after tea to Dr Croft Hill, away. Paid him £22.16.6! Quiet evg with Roy, must have lights improved morg. room. Thursday August 1 Emma Childs left. Packed with Nurse many extra things & looked thro’ letters, bills etc. Dear Roy dined at home, morg. room not cozy to sit in after dinner. No letter fr. Mrs Evans about wreath for my Dearest’s grave Saturday, feel v. anxious that all sh’d be as I could wish there & worthy of my beloved one. Friday 2 August Came to Balcombe with Nurse by 12 o’c train, changed at Three Bridges arr’d 1.18. My Darling met us looking sweet in grey. Dear chicks well & little Linley much grown. Garden & flowers very pretty & such quantities & immense variety of sweet peas. Letters fr. Sophy fr. Felixstowe, good accounts Edgar, & fr. Bee Barrs. Lennie, Mr & Mrs Cokayne & Mr (blank) came 4.30, only Gladys staying. Saturday 3 August Sept well. Lovely morg. saw dear little Linley return fr. his ride before breakfast fr. my window. Walked round garden with nurse & walked to Lake with Darling & nurse. Sat out. Glorious morg. Men fishing, caught 5 fish, one over 4 lbs. We saw Mr C.S. lose one! Maudie with chicks after lunch to Ottie’s children’s party, brought back lovely presents! Dined alone drawing room. Nurse sat with me. To bed before men out fr. dining room. Sunday 4 August Vy rainy early. Church 2/-. To communion service with my darling. Nurse & I had walk first. My corns v. painful, make me quite lame. After luncheon Lennie, Mr Clifford Smith & Mr Cokayne & Gladys to Lake, too wet for tennis Mrs Oakleys. Mr C. & Maud for walk. Monday 5 August My darling’s birthday. God bless her & keep her. Flower show. Sun early, lovely fresh morg. Mitchel’s flowers & fruit beautifully arranged, campanulas mauve & white perfectly lovely. Saw Maud judge bread. Vy sucessful show, crowded. Maudie gave away prizes looking charming in mauve silk coat & skirt & black hat with white feather. Mrs Maudsley her son & dau-in-law here. Vy glad to see her again. Dined drawing room & bed early. Tuesday 6 August Wet morg, dull. Awake 5.15. c’d not sleep after. Dr Croft Hill’s receipt & short note. Letter fr. Toula, & Mrs Evans who had taken my wreath to my Dearest’s grave. I dined down stairs first time. Mr & Mrs Denny here, v. nice couple. Walked with Nurse after tea towards Cookfield. Storms of rain & colder. Wednesday 7 August Nurse & self walked to Mill Cottage. Mr H. Booth’s sister Mrs Campbell there, seems a charming woman, greatly enjoyed talk with her sitting outside cottage. Nurse delighted with it & the Lake or millpond. The Booth children to tea & luncheon. Unable to go to see Dennys on account of storm. Darling v. tired, Nurse massaged her & eased her head. I dined in dining room, to bed directly after. Heavy rain on & off all day. Thursday 8 August Stamps 2/-. Maud, Nurse & self in Motor to Brighton. Had tooth taken out by Dr Gibbon’s son, scarcely any pain. He had unfortunately sprained or broken bone in left wrist in Norway only a few days ago. Tooth or gum ached after & evg. Home 2.30. Maud & Gladys to Mrs Denny’s at 4.15. I rested & had walk with Nurse after & bath at 8.30 & to bed as cannot eat comfortably. Had bread & milk. Mr & Mrs Messel to dinner & Mrs Alfred Messel & daughter. Friday 9 August Sent off house cheque £3.11.6 & 15/- to Mrs Evans for wreath. Walked morg with Nurse, Maud & Gladys C. Wild flowers. Maud found names of 3. Gladys left by 3 train. L. Dear little Oliver most amusing at luncheon explaining “That man’s father is my father’s son.” Quiet evg. Roy another good day!!! Lennie tells me. Friday 16 August Pd 4/- for boots mending. Finer & warmer but some showers. Walked morg. with Mrs Cadogan to farm & sat some time. Little Linley much better, but remained in bed all day. Billie Hemming did not play cricket, either Beach or Mitchell’s boy played instead. Maud’s cricket tea day! So sorry we could not be with her, afraid of damp sitting out. Ethel Cussens here for day with her niece. Mrs Cadogan went with me. Darling remained with dear little Linley, he is still in bed & feverish. Dr thinks result fr. measles during term. Lovely morg. Maud & Lennie going for one night to Sir Felix Schuster. Walked alone to Miss Ragley about altering my coat & bodice. Stamps 1/6. Maud, Linley & self went in car & saw St Bartholemew’s Church. Very high. Lennie & Mr Cadogan at home. S. Ex. Holiday. Roy at Felixstowe. Had two walks & feel better for them. Miss the dear chicks vy much. Linley amusing himself on bicycle. Bed early. Miss Ripley came to fit me, alterations to coat & bodice. To castle, sup. built by Alfred the Great to guard entrance to (illeg), given by William Conqueror to William de Warrenne. Henry III escaped there after battle of Lewes to Simon de Montford. Tea at Hotel v. good & went straight to bed on return v. tired. Wednesday 4 September Slept v. well. Lennie very seedy. Doctor came early, temp & bad head, unable to go to city. Darling with him all day reading. I wrote & paid bills all morg. Effie Twiss left morning. Took little Anne for walk after tea Farm road for blackberries. Dr came again evg. Lennie’s temp 102 . Thursday 5 September Another lovely morg. cool & fresh. Lennie v. seedy in bed all day. Ottie & Mrs Gibson called at tea time. Walked alone after Handcross Rd. Darling looks tired, feel anxious about her. She came in for part of dinner only. Letter fr. Edgar at Langham alone, Sophy at Lewis. Edgar’s ear not quite satisfactory, seeing surgeon again. Friday 6 September Wrote, posted letters 1/- again self. Sent off pass books. Walked along New Road, feel tired. Lennie better but still in his room. Ottie came to see him, & Mrs Gibson. Fraulein away for a holiday for a few days. Fancy myself Lennie has influenza. Hope darling Maud will escape. Saturday 7 September Ethel Sharp op’on for appendicitis. Fine paid Wallace 4/8. 5d stamps. Edgar at Langham for week, leaves tomorrow for Seaford, his ear not healed yet. Lennie better & in morg room & his study. Enjoyed their day & went over Penshurst Place, de Lisles. Morg Lennie & I walked to Mill Cottage to enquire for Sylvia, leg torn on barbed wire. Lennie & Ann at 3 o’c to Lady F. Fitzroy’s & to tea. Miss Blaine, Oliver, Donald & self had tea together, & for delightful walk to farm. Peter caught in trap, 2 men helped us, seemed no worse after but made an awful noise. Tuesday 10 September Lennie went to the City, really not fit to go. Maud fetched him after tea in open car & he remained in drawing room until I went to bed & after!!! Maud told me of awful accident to the Bergheims motor on way fr. Reading. Mr Bergheim so injured died after. Very shocked & grieved. How I pity her. Friday September 13 Lovely morg. Gymkana. Lorings, Stansfields, H. Booths, & baby came & Mrs Hood & 2 little girls. Great success & fine tho’ no sun. Mes petits enfants les plus beaux de tous! Lennie home earlier. Good accounts of Ethel Smart’s progress but suffering much pain, feel so sorry for her. No walk & late to bed. Pianola & amusing card game. Maud looking much better & v. pretty this afternoon. The dog which bit Sylvia shot last night. Saturday 14 September Lennie holiday. Morg & afternoon walked with Gladys & we all went to Hayworth Booths. Tang’s birthday party. Bed early after cards, pianola. Edgar & Sophy at Seaford. Sunday 15 September To church with Maud & chicks, communion. The rest for walk after lunch to Talbots. Wrote. Maud came home v. tired too far for her. Had walk to farm & wood with little Ann. Monday 16 September V. warm, little sun. Morg gathered & sent off flowers self to Roy. No letter or news of him for ages, or ans. to my letters. Maud v. seedy morg, out to lunch, & Linley to Ottie’s. Startling news there!!!. Upton came to see me. X. Felt v. sad, floods of thoughts to smother down. He is v. comfortable & well in his place. Long letter fr. Spencer. Gladys & self to Lady F’s after tea to take book back. Got so hot returning late had to go to bed after bath & dine in my room. Mrs Hohler came to stay. Tuesday 17 September Fine morg. Warm. Slept well. Long letter from Roy & so delighted to hear he is to have a larger share in business. X. Wrote cheques all morg. to pay bills. Maud, Mrs Hohler & self to lunch at Mrs Macquoid’s. Mrs Derry & her mother there, perfect house, exquisitely kept in fact too well kept, colouring most beautiful & arrangements of flowers. Gardens also v. beautiful. On after for picnic with Gladys & Linley boy & Mr F, delightful in the woods (illeg illeg) overlooking country of heather. Pleasant evg & card games, a delightful day. Wednesday 18 September Dear Mervyn’s birthday. Slept fairly well but late. Lovely sunny morg, up 7 o’c AM. Fraulein leaves for Switzerland. We all went off at 12 o’c in 2 motors to Bignor to lunch & see old Roman mosaics. Took nearly 2 hrs, lovely drive Maud self & Linley in closed motor, Mr F, Gladys & Mrs Hohler in open. The farm & field where Roman remains are preserved in 5 separate stone buildings like college with shutter windows, exquisitely situated in a sloping field overlooking the downs. A ploughman came upon the mosaic 101 years ago & it was discovered 52 rooms in all (Page inserted) Wed 18th Sep 1912. these round a square. 5 or 6 have fine mosaics in the centre, only a small portion of original walls remain. The largest room has head of Juno & a line of gladiators below. The centre is sunk & broken but below are more designs in mosaic. Strange looking fish, helmets etc. This has a room leading off with mosaic, one has a fine man’s head, another Head of Medusa. Columns, bones & many pieces of mosaic & carving all broken are collected one end of room or side of room. The buildings are separate & one some distance removed fr. others, this with a Medusa head. Would have loved to remain for hours but had to have a hurried lunch spread on rugs in field leading up to the remains. Delightful morg. & came back in open car which had to fetch Lennie. Lost my dear little blue silk cushion in battling with wind on return, it was determined to have something. V. sorry & spoilt what w’d have been a perfect day. Reached home 4.30. Had tea in my room & rested on my bed until time to dress for dinner. Little Linley down & 46

played cards with him until 10 o’c with rest, & to bed. Lennie quite himself again. Thursday 19 September Darling Linley returns to school. Dull & cooler. Fine later. Morg. walked with Maud & Mrs Hohler towards Ld Frederick’s, & worked. L.Linley packed & went his round of “adiews” & looked v. white at lunch dear little fellow. He left 6 o’c with Mr Forester. 5/- Linley, 1/- stamps. Maudie took him back & Mrs Stansfield dined here. Letter fr. Edgar. Friday 20 September Fanny & Alice to luncheon 1.30. Lovely sunny morg & day. Took them with Maud round Garden. They remained until after tea. Mrs Hohler & Gladys & Mrs Breitmeyer to tea. Mr & Mrs Towse came to dinner, nice woman & quite good looking. Came to bed before men out fr. dining room. Saturday 21 September Lovely day. Morg. read on Verandah deliciously warm out of wind. Mr & Mrs Hohler left 11.30 in their own car. Mrs H. drove! Lennie home at 2.30. To Nyymans with Gladys, Lennie & Maud 3 o’c. Saw Mr & Mrs Messel, round garden with them, tea there, they walked home. Darling v. tired after but w’d not own it. Mr Marriott arrived during dinner. Bed early. Sunday 22 September To Church with chicks & Miss Blane. Maud, Lennie, Mr Marriott, Gladys & Winnie Lockyer for long day picnic in large motor, to Battle, Winchester, Hastings etc, not home until 7 o.c, all v. rosey. Mr & Mrs Booth dined here. Chicks had tea with me & Anne for walk with me. Bed early. Monday 23 September Slept until my breakfast came in. Mr Marriott left early after breakfast. Ethel (Hare) came over in her motor to luncheon, looks just the same, vy well & strong. So glad to see her again. Decided leave Monday, Caroline going for holiday. Had delightful walk up to farm with darling. Gladys & Winnie returning sooner. Darling looked tired & worried during dinner, wonder why? Pianola & card game. L. tiresome over music. Tuesday 24 September V. kind letter fr. Tabs fr. Paris asking me to return to Leweston Saturday, cannot on account of Caroline’s holiday, and fr. Bank re fire insurance, & 47

Sophy to meet Lennie. M. & self v. pleasant dinner next to Edgar. Bed early. They enjoyed their day. Wednesday 25 September Letter fr. Midge. V. anxious about her, does not seem well again. A delightful day. Edgar to Lake fished, got 7 morg, he went again after lunch & got 5 more. Maud & Sophy to Nymans after lunch, returned 4 o’c & we all went down to Lake, & had tea there under trees, lovely. Edgar came & had it with us, he & Mitchell in boat. Walked back & dressed early & read to chicks. Mad’lle here. Roulette evg, bed late! Lovely day, crisp air & sun. So glad to see Edgar better latter to Brighton. Thursday 26 September Lovely morg. Awake early. Sat out on drive, a perfect sun bath, with Edgar after walk with him. Went in Motor to Haywards Heath with Edgar & Sophy 3 o’c & saw them off. Rested & tea in my room on return & walk after with Gladys. Maud & Winnie to meet Lennie who looks white & tired. Bed early. Spoke to Beatrice telephone, decided return home Wednesday. Friday 27 September Maud & self & Gladys & Winnie for drive in Motor, open, to call on Mrs Cayase (Barsolotte’s sister). Mr Stewart, rector of Staplefield dined here. Astonished how much more my Darling seemed to know of the Scriptures & History of the Church even than he did. To bed directly after dinner. Saturday 28 September Winnie Lockyer left early, do not think her looking any stronger for having lost all her teeth poor little soul. Sat out writing morg. Lennie at home all day, looks v. seedy at times. Mr & Mrs Cecil Brownlow arrived 3 o’c. Dear Roy came at 5.30, looks well. I walked with Oliver to Mill, saw Mrs H.B. Stayed ½ hour, home 5 o’c. Poured after lunch. Mr & Mrs Messel came to tea, Mr & Mrs Booth to dinner & after tea Lennie & Brownlows to fish, killed 3. Monday 30 September Pouring wet morg & rough night. Letters fr. Tabbie & Edgar. Dear Roy left with Lennie morg. in torrents of rain, & Mr Brownlow. Gladys & Mrs Brownlow later. In all day so wet. Read & wrote. Vy happy with my Darling alone & dear chicks for a card game after tea. Wish we saw more of them. Pianola. Vy tired evg. Bed after 10 o’c.
Tuesday 1 October Instalment due & last one on eleven £10 B.A.Gt Southern Ex 1914 shrs 4%. Last payment £2 per shr, viz £22 making now £110 pd. Bank promised to see to this for me. Sent call paper to the Bank to be pd by Bank, & 4/8 dividend Sons of Gualia. Pouring wet day. Headache. (several sentences crossed out, page pinned in). Tuesday 1st Oct 1912. Vey bad night & headache morg. Lovely early. Went for a walk with my darlng, saw poor old Mrs Ireland who was so happy to see Maud. Packed a little, Laster did nearly all whilst we were out. Rained after lunch. Rested. Played card games with dear chicks after tea L. quite cheerful during dinner. I very tired & bed rather late again for me! After 10 o’c. So difficult to get off punctually 9.30. & am done up if I am later. Delightful day with my darling alone. Wednesday 2 October I return home, taking Mabel Jenkinson (Sophy’s between maid) with me. My Darling also sent Laster with me, most kind attentive girl, unpacked & looked after me & pd for daily fares & omnibus etc. Came by 1.16, good train. Laster left by 6 o’c train. Roy dined with me quietly, nice evg. He was very tired, had trying day, made & lost money. Bed 10 o’c. Thursday 3 October Slept fairly well. Great noise in road., motor hoots. Beatrice did my hair, arm ached a good deal. To Bank about fire insurance, saw Mr Richardson who assured me it was quite safe. Fear Emma has lost money sent Barkers! Vy vexed. Left dear Mother’s coffee pot to be mended, Beatrice took it 5/6. Met Lady Wiston & Mr Abbott much aged. To Hayfields 49

Friday 4 October Fair night, awake 3 – 4.30. Letter fr. darling Maud. Lovely morg. Frost last night. Vy cold but dry. X. Hayfields coming to put down carpet in my room. Looks much cosier & clean curtains up & velvet ones. Out after lunch called on Mrs Spofforth. Bought nails 7d, & pins Barkers 7d. Put up pictures my room. Roy dined at home, happy evg. He brought pears 1/2 each !!! & nuts. (Letter from Maud inserted) Balcombe House, Balcombe, Sussex. Oct 4th 1912. My beloved Own, You can’t think how horrible this house is without you. You ought to come & see, the only thing that I can do is to work all the time & turn out drawers & cupboards & write out books & cheques. It’s what I have been doing all day long & my room is an ocean of papers & muddle. Mr Parsons & I have been rearranging all the wardrobes & drawers as we have to leave it all in order for Christmas. The darlings & I have been playing Coon Can & Oliver has won 3 times & he won last night too, so we all think that he is enchanted. This without any help at all. All out of is own little brain. He had nothing against him tonight as there were only 3 games & he won every one & last night he won 2 out of 3 & only had two pips against him in the game that he did not win. Lennie has been fearfully busy in the city & does not get back until the later train. It was bitterly cold last night & is freezing again tonight by the nippiness in the air but we had glorious sunshine all day. Met Mrs Paxton & many other friends. Maud fetched me in open Motor, new chauffeur. I lunched alone with her, she has a new dog, puppy Daxhund, vy handsome one. Had carriage to take me to Princes where I lunched with Miss Innes & Mrs Moore Smith & we went to Kingsway Theatre & saw “Voysey’s Inheritance” excellent but v. unsatisfactory end, tho v. clever thro’ rest. Jean Mackinlay acted well. Roy out Beatrice took his clothes to club. Mabel out afternoon. Thursday 10 October Edgar & Sophy come to Langham fr. Seaford. Walked morg to see Ada Spencer, 11 Pembridge Gds, stayed some time. Lunched alone. Maud to see Nana, Brisling too, & goes evg to Colosseum, enough to kill her. I had carriage 2.30, called on May Fitton & Desirée there. Mrs Watson, saw her, Mrs Welby out, Mrs English in, Fanny Barker out. Spencer & Roy dine here. Friday 11 October Lunch at Maud’s. She has only 2 maids & her drawing room & bedroom extra, her maid away. Darling Maud & Lennie to Balcombe. Edgar came to tea with Fitzroy & remained till 7 o’c. Roy dined with me. Vy glad to have him. Sunday October 13 War in the Balkans!!!. To St Georges Church. Warm & felt vy tired & shakey. Edgar & Sophy to lunch both looking so well. Mervyn & Ethel & Sp. & Ada also came. Vy glad to see them, & Mrs Paxton came & remained until 7 o’c. Roy dined with me, had a good rest fr. 7 – 8. Pleasant evg, dear Roy less tired & the little maids managed quite nicely. She did it beautifully & left after tea when Edgar came & stayed an hour with me, awfully good of him as he has so much to do before they go to Egypt on 28th inst. Roy dined with me & we had v. nice evg. together wish he w’d not take so much brandy. Wednesday16 October Lunch with Edgar 1.15. Had darling’s carriage to Langham. Pd Gas Light & Coke Co 9/6. Took pass books to Bank. Fighting Balkans still going on. Wonder what will be the end of it all! Miss McCoy wth E. & S. for luncheon. Vy nice girl, travelled. Carriage to Maud’s 3.30. Wrote letters, sent £1 to Ethel Smart. Friday 18 October Carriage at 12 o’c to Mr Hohler’s about blinds & to fetch Edgar & Sophy at Langhams. We all 3 lunched at Maudie’s. I had car back. Overton here! Gave him tea. Toula’s book arrived. Sat in Maud’s room whilst she sorted things after Edgars left & had tea there. Roy to Edna Lewisohn’s weekend. Beatrice took up his things Paddington. Saturday 19 October Windows cleaned Corts. My darling Maud & Lennie start for Italy. Motor at 12, got 3 1/- pears at Roy’s place Knightsbridge for Darling & on to lunch with her 12.30 & she left with Latter at ¼ to 2 for Charing X. Dear little Ann cried. Walked with dear chicks to Round Pond where they met the Hohler children & on to tea with them, & Miss Blaine. I called & had tea with Brooks v. well & cheery. Midge sent me a chicken & darling also sent rice cooked & some soup! Sunday 20 October Telegram fr. my Darling fr. Basle early, arrived safely. Weird morg. To Christian Science Meeting by mistake for Unitarian Church. V. large & well dressed congregation. A man & a woman in 2 pulpits separated by a lovely huge bouquet of mauve & white flowers. Sat next to Usher a gentlemanly young man, shared his hymn book and sort of prayer book. He had v. fine voice & asked me on leaving to go to a meeting (page pinned in) Sunday 20th October on 14th Nov on C. Science. It had done so much for him in practical religion. Service most strange. No kneeling. Lovely hymns & portions of Scripture read alternately by the man & woman in pulpit, she in a white silk blouse, he in ordinary morg. dress. I went on to Unitarian Church after. Vy lengthy. Missed Sophy who was there. Edgar & Sophy lunched here & we went at 3 to review of Kensington Reservists, Edgar one. Territorials, House boy brigade & red cross staff of nurses, service at St Mary Abbots first, crammed. After to Town Hall where the Mayor of Kensington & Sir R. Phillimore & Gen. Sartorius & many others gave Colours to the Kens reservists, presented by Mayoress & Lady Phillimore. Speeches by 4 men reservists drawn up centre of Hall. We saw fr. dais & Band opposite. Most impressive ceremony but Mayor & Gen S. spoke v. badly & sermon Canon 53

Met Ada & Sp. on way to Doctor fear operation necessary, appendicitis. Darling Anne & Oliver came 3 o’c. Toula & all of us made sweets & after tea played Coon Can & they both won two games each. Christian Science. Scotsman got up & told audience what it had done for him, boils became mere pimples after wrestling with himself all night. Saturday 26 October Hylda Spencer operated on for appendicitis by surgeon friend of Douglas’ instead of Walter Cheyne who had promised to do operation at £40 reduction!!! Thro’ Dr Playfair who is their Doctor. Off at 10 o’c to see Edgar & Sophy off to Paris & for Alexandria, look v. well. Midge & Mervyn there also. I on with her after, lunched at Langham & to see Triple bill, Shaw’s, Pinero’s & Barrie’s one act plays. Charming, enjoyed it immensely. Sat next to Mrs Newton, V. Watneys friend. Midge returned to tea with me. Dined alone. Sunday 27 October Cold coffee, breakfast late! Walked to enquire after Hilda, saw Sp, Ada, not dressed 12.30. H. had had fair night & later had fish for luncheon! Lunched alone. Saw Caroline after breakfast, she looks v. ill & thinner in the face. Midge, Fanny Barker, Mervyn & Ethel came to tea. Drove at 12 o’c to enquire for Oliver, saw Doctor, says indigestion, it seems the same sort of thing I have had! V. mild flu of sorts. Dear little fellow looks v. white. On after to enquire for Hylda, going on splendidly. Awful morg, poured & returned after 1 ½ hrs drive. Stores 2/Friday 1 November Heard dear little Oliver better. In all morg, feel better & giddyness passed off. Liver! & why? Mrs Bryan came & we arranged alteration of my black velvet dress morg. After rest walked to Miss Innes & Bradburys, out. Missed dear Roy, went by early train to Edna’s. Alone evening. Mended china & put drawing room straight small objects. Saturday 2 November Turks hopelessly beaten. Constantinople in peril.
