Mozart wrote his last three symphonies during a six-week period in the summer of 1788, days after the death of his infant daughter. ‘Jupiter’, his final symphony, is regarded by many as his finest. Herbert von Karajan once said that when you hear Mahler's Fifth, "you forget that time has passed. A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience. The fantastic finale almost forces you to hold your breath". From the magnificent trumpet opening, to the Adagietto for harp and strings, later used to magnificent effect by Visconti in the film 'Death in Venice', the musical canvas and emotional scope of this symphony are huge. The endless sublime melodies of Mozart’s joyful 'Eine kleine Nachtmusik' ensure its enduring popularity, and it is matched in exquisite tunefulness by Borodin’s 'Sinfonia for Strings'. Written as a love letter to his wife, the work’s third movement takes the form of a Nocturne and is one of his bestloved and instantly recognisable tunes. In between come new arrangements of two Chopin Nocturnes by David Matthews, and the red-hot rhythms of Steve Martland’s gripping 'Eternity’s Sunrise'.
