The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum is the only Scottish venue for The British Museum’s ‘Roman Empire: Power & People’ touring exhibition. The exhibition brings together over 160 stunning pieces from the British Museum, to explore the story of one of the most powerful empires the world has ever seen. Alongside the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to see objects from Dundee’s Roman collections, as well as objects from the National Museum of Scotland, and Perth & Kinross Museum Service. The exhibition is supported through the generosity of the Dorset Foundation, and has been developed in partnership between Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives and the British Museum. #RomanEmpire #Dundee

To coincide with ‘Roman Empire: Power & People’, The McManus is staging an exhibition of artworks with a taste of the Antique. ‘Classical Art: The Legacy of Ancients’ illustrates the enduring influence of ancient Greek and Roman culture through paintings, sculpture and ceramics from Dundee’s nationally significant collection of fine art. #ClassicalArt

Using evidence from archaeology and contemporary sculpture, Dr Jon Coulston, School of Classics, University of St Andrews, answers these questions and many more, giving a fascinating insight into life in the Roman Army.

We are delighted that DCA Cinema is running a series of special film screenings which coincide with the ‘Roman Empire: Power & People’ events programme, and is part of their Focus on Film course with Dundee University Film Department. Screenings are open to the public, as well as course participants. Each film will be introduced by a lecturer. For those taking part in the course, the film will be followed by a 30-minute discussion.
